but changing his mind is not as simple as that
and how to convince voters not to vote for him
had initially intended to defend his seat as an independent candidate following his party’s decision to sit out the polls on Dec 18 out of respect for the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition
But this caused unhappiness in GPS which accused Bersatu of going back on its agreement not to field candidates in the state election
Ali subsequently announced that he would withdraw from the race
and pledged his full support for the GPS candidate in Krian
But having submitted his nomination on Dec 6
“His name remains on the paper because candidates are not allowed to withdraw,” Election Commission (EC) chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh told MalaysiaNow
citing Rule 9 of the Elections (Conduct of Elections) Regulations 1981
“The deadline for withdrawal ended at 10am on nomination day.”
Ali won the Krian seat on a PKR ticket in 2011 and 2016, and had aimed to defend it against Friday Belik of GPS
Musa Dinggat of Parti Sarawak Bersatu and Danny Kuan from Parti Bumi Kenyalang
He retracted his decision following advice from Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin
who had said on Nov 27 that his party would sit out the election out of respect for the wishes of the GPS leadership
Muhyiddin also said that Bersatu had chosen to stay out of the contest because it believed GPS had the ability to win and that GPS had supported the Perikatan Nasional-led federal government when he was the prime minister
Ali himself, at a press conference on his decision to withdraw, said it had been a strategic move, and voiced hope that the gesture would be reciprocated by GPS at the next general election.
“A victory for GPS is also a victory for me. If GPS wins, I win,” he said.
But not everyone in his constituency appears to agree.
Speaking to MalaysiaNow, community leader or penghulu Anyum Anak Kinyeh said Ali was a responsible person.
“When you request anything from Ali – whether it is to repair the roads or to repair the streetlights – he will try to get it done.”
In Anyum’s opinion, Ali should continue to campaign despite no longer wishing to contest – perhaps together with the GPS candidate as a gesture of solidarity.
Batang Kabo community leader Latan Ambau agreed.
“Apart from a joint campaign, I think it would be appropriate for Ali to send an official letter to the EC,” he said.
“Whether the EC will accept the letter or not is not the issue. The most important thing is the gesture, to show his sincerity.”
He also agreed that GPS should return the gesture by helping Ali campaign at the next general election.
“We should stay together and work together for the best interest of Sarawakians.”
Other candidates from Bersatu who will be running in the Sarawak polls are Siki Balarik (Belaha), Ricky Enteri (Bawang Assan) and Ismawi Muhammad (Muara Tuang).
Siki is Hulu Rajang Bersatu chief while Ricky is a youth activist from Bawang Assan.
Ismawi meanwhile is Kota Samarahan Bersatu division chief.

Ali Biju refuted the comment made by Friday Belik reported by a local daily today that the former had agreed to give up the seat
which I won in 2011 and have till now served two terms in this constituency
I have never agreed to surrender my seat to PDP
Friday should not have uttered those words nor commented on whether I will defend my incumbency or relinquish it as he is neither a leader in Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) nor does he have any legitimate locus standii to speak on behalf of GPS or Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” said Ali
He claimed that his supporters and the vast majority of the constituents of Krian have insisted that he should continue to serve them and the entire constituency of N39 Krian
“Any decision as to my defending my incumbency of Krian will be discussed between my President
and the Chief Minister of Sarawak,” said Ali who is also the federal deputy minister of Energy and Natural Resources

April 3: A 36-year-old male foreigner was caught by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) enforcement team for encroachment and illegal mining activity in Dered Krian National Park (DKNP) in Bau today
According to SFC Controller of national parks and nature reserves Zolkipli Mohamad Aton
a SFC enforcement team was on their daily patrolling to enhance the protection of DKNP when they came across three suspects who were encroaching inside DKNP
“Two of the suspects managed to flee the scene while one was arrested with the possession of three bags of soil
The 36-year-old foreigner and the two other suspects were confirmed to be involved in illegal gold mining activities at Gunung Tabai Cave which is inside the DKNP
“A police report was lodged at Bau Police Station
The suspect was remanded pending further investigation by the authorities concerned and their tools were confiscated,” he said in a press statement today
Zolkipli warned the local community not to encroach on Gunung Tabai and urged the public to play their part in protecting the state’s natural heritage by sharing any information pertaining similar illegal activities in their area through SFC’s hotline
“We will not tolerate any illegal activities
illegal logging and wildlife trade and will ensure that the offenders will be brought to justice,” he added
April 18: According to Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak
the Sungai Krian Bridge in Betong is currently at 46.25 per cent progress and is due to complete in September 2025
The connection between Pusa and Sesang will have a two-lane single carriageway consisting of 290m-length approach roads on Pusa and 976m-long on Sesang
with the road constructed according to JKR R3 standard
The bridge is 8m wide with a total length of 690m consisting of 3-span balance cantilever box girders and 8-span t-beam girders
May 6: The State Legislative Assembly (DUN) today heard that the Sarawak government should amend Section 6 or carry out survey of native customary rights (NCR) land under Section 18 with immediate effect
Ali Biju (PKR-Krian) questioned the state government’s next course of action in order to mitigate the natives’ concerns over the legal implications of Section 6 as exposed by the Court of Appeal judgment
was a result of the judgment made on March 18
in the Court of Appeal over the case of ‘Zaharah Mustapha Raja Sewa and Another vs Sagau Batu Bala and 5 Others
he said there were several legitimate points of concerns that had created anxieties among the natives
“The court interprets that individual ownership of land is invalid once the land is converted into Section 6
quoting Para 9 of the judgment of the case
he concluded that the natives hold the reserve land as licensees only
which he said the implication of the two paragraphs was that the gazetted land under Section 6 could also be withdrawn at any time after being converted into native communal reserve land
and the persons holding the land were merely licensees
“There is no guarantee that those lands surveyed under Section 6 will be given individual titles and the landowners are at the mercy of the State,” said Ali when debating the TYT’s speech today
which stated that ‘the claims should have been heard in the first instance by the native court’
Ali said the statement actually meant that any disputes within the communal reserve land must be dealt with by the Native Courts
what is the capacity of our Native Courts System to adjudicate all those land matters among the natives
bearing in mind there are a lot of native court cases pending in the Native Courts,” he said
He also pointed out the standard of the Native Courts must be raised to be on par with the Syariah Courts and civil courts
where it is high time to amend the Native Courts Ordinance to allow that to happen
it can be concluded that once the area is gazetted under section 6
then any individual Native Customary Rights Land will be extinguished and if anyone having any Native Customary Rights Land within the gazetted area must challenge the gazette or otherwise as
they are deemed to accept the extinguishment of their individual Native Customary Right land,” said Ali
Dec 9: Krian incumbent Datuk Ali Biju has decided to pull out from contesting and defending his seat as an independent candidate in the 12th Sarawak Election
In announcing his withdrawal three days after his candidacy had been accepted through a statement today
the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) man has in turn pledged his full support to Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate Friday Belik
“I have received advice from the party’s top leadership as well as assurance from Bersatu chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin
regarding the national cooperation political framework between Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg as the GPS chairman
“I am confident that this cooperation will continue and enhance the relationship between PN and GPS
“I regret that this decision (to contest as independent) has affected the good relationship between Bersatu and GPS,” he said
Ali was accepted as an independent candidate for this forthcoming election following nomination day on Dec 6
where he have contested using a logo depicting a chair
His decision to contest has since drawn backlash from GPS leaders, with Abang Johari even expressing disappointment towards him for violating the agreement between PN-Bersatu and GPS just last night after the launching of the GPS Manifesto
Some leaders even demanded disciplinary action against Ali
including sacking him as federal deputy minister
had on Nov 27 announced that the party will stay out of the Sarawak Election out of respect for the wishes of the GPS leadership and to ensure existing Sarawak-based parties can score an excellent win
However, when Friday made a comment on Dec 3 that Ali had agreed to give up the seat, the incumbent’s immediate response saying he had not given way raised eyebrows of many quarters until nomination day
when he appeared at the nomination centre in Krian
The two-term assemblyman explained that he had offered himself as the candidate for N39 Krian in the 12th Sarawak Election after taking into account the “views and desperation” of community leaders and Krian voters
he said it was the strong support and backing from the people that strengthened his resolve in wanting to continue to serve in Krian and Saratok
N38 Kalaka and N40 Kabong to give their fullest support and backing to GPS candidates in the forthcoming election on Dec 18
the Krian seat will now be reduced to a two-corner fight between GPS Friday and Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK)’s Danny Kuan
although it is uncertain if Ali’s chair logo will continue to be printed on the ballot paper
Feb 7: A 51-year-old woman was fined RM12,000 in default 14 months jail by the Sessions Court for trespassing

All three offenses were committed at approximately 9.30am on August 24

Deputy Public Prosecutor Aiman Nabila Alwi led the prosecution
while the accused was represented by lawyer Tiong Ing Neng
June 11: The Sarawak economy is on the path to recovery following the resumption of several construction projects after the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) was implemented
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is optimistic that Sarawak’s economy will gradually recover following the almost total halt in economic activities over the past three months due to the Covid-19 pandemic
“The resuming of construction projects will spur the recovery of Sarawak’s economy going forward
“With the gradually opening up of more economic sectors
for instance for contractors (in the construction industry)
“I am positive about the recovery of Sarawak’s economy going forward,” he said during a press conference after performing the ground-breaking ceremony on the Sungai Krian bridge project in Kaba
Abang Johari visited the site to check on the standard operating procedures (SOP) adopted by contractors for the construction of the Sungai Krian and Batang Saribas bridges during the new normal post-Covid-19
When asked by reporters on the impact of the forced pause due to Covid-19
Abang Johari asserted that Covid-19 has no impact on construction cost but several projects had to be rescheduled following the pandemic
Abang Johari expressed belief the Sungai Krian bridge project in Kaba
will provide greater connectivity to the rakyat especially those living along the coastal area
He also believed the coastal road project will boost the agriculture sector and open up new areas of economic development
which spans 690 metres with an estimated contract sum of RM75 million is expected to be completed by March 2022
He highlighted that in the next three years
bridges will replace ferry services for road transportation along the coastal road
He reiterated the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government intends build seven bridges along the Coastal Road project across Batang Rambungan
After the earth-breaking ceremony for the Sungai Krian bridge
Abang Johari inspected the work progress of the Batang Saribas bridge project at Pusa
He emphasised that the Batang Saribas bridge project is scheduled to be completed in June 2023
Concerning the long-term economic development of Sarawak
Abang Johari revealed that he established the Sarawak Economic Action Council (SEAC) to shape the direction of Sarawak’s economy going forward
Schools and parents are working themselves into a lather over students' hairstyles
but the barbers are the ones who could be facing a close shave
NEWSPAPER SECTION: Life
Everything about a barbershop is nostalgic: the buzzing-bee sound of a clipper
they evoke memories of their formative years
a place where as students they were given a proper (military-style
in certain cases) short haircut as required by their schools
‘‘I think students will continue to come here
even if they don’t need to have a very close-cropped style any more,’’ says Mohammad Sangsri
Failure to do so meant some form of punishment awaited them
When the Ministry of Education announced last week that close-cropped hair is no longer compulsory _ ending more than 30 years of what many see as a violation of human rights and others see as a necessary means of control _ the student reaction was mixed
started to wonder if they would continue to play the same role
is expecting the new rule to only slightly affect his career
He says barbershops are considered affordable and students will still need a haircut at least once a month
even though demand for ultra-short hairstyles will drop
His non-air-conditioned premises is a sanctuary of old-school charm frequented by students from many nearby institutions
"Young boys don't pay much attention to themselves
and having a short haircut makes it easier for them to take care of their hair
I think students will continue to come here
even if they don't need to have a very close-cropped style any more."
Sumit Kaewkoi from Chic Studio on Lat Phrao
believes that shops like his may benefit from the repeal of the old rule
but he hopes more students will consider using his services now that they have more freedom to wear their hair longer
"Especially female secondary school students
they should come to a salon like mine more than they do now
"It used to be only dek panich _ vocational school students _ who were my customers
They're of the same age as secondary school students
but regular schools used to be more strict
maybe this will make hair salons become livelier with new sets of clients."
The issue of students' hairstyles has been in the news since late last year
is a form of institutionalised dictatorship
and children should be able to choose their own hairstyle
voices a common sentiment: "I disagree with this rule and don't understand why it must be only short hair for high school students
I think my hair is too short and I really don't like it."
boys are required to wear crew cuts no longer than 5cm and female students can have hair no longer than their earlobes (see box)
This controversial regulation was implemented in 1972
Education Minister Phongthep Thepkanchana ordered that all schools should allow male students to have long hair that looks neat and clean-cut
Female students can also choose to have short or long hair
The minister revealed that many schools were still complying with the 1972 regulations
But in fact the regulations were modified in 1975 to allow male students to have slightly longer hair
schools should follow the latest version that gives students the option of longer
is the student uniform: Thailand remains one of the few countries in the world with compulsory school uniforms and _ until last week _ a rigid hair code
If some people believe that a haircut has nothing to do with the student's academic performance
then the same logic can be applied to the uniform
believe short hair has long been a part of Thai identity
"I am content with the old and new rules," says 16-year-old Wachirawit Songput
I believe that the rule about hair and uniforms should remain as it's always been
It makes the students look clean and neat and creates unity within schools
Two young pupils at Don Thong School in Chachoengsao
The krian and ting hairstyles pictured here are no longer mandatory
Apart from influencing the stress levels in children on inspection day
the student hairdo has also influenced the Thai lexicon
Two of the most popularly used slang words in the past few years were inspired by the features of the (now no longer) mandatory hairstyle: krian and ting
Krian is a descriptive term for a very short crew cut on male students
referring to the regulation that female students could wear their hair to that length and not a millimetre longer
provocative or pain-in-the-neck behaviour _ and certainly it was derived from the belief that young people have a tendency to ask for trouble
those tough guys will beat you up." A recent Thai film is titled Song Krian Pai Rian Phut _ literally
"send a krian boy to study Buddhism" _ is about a teenager's soul-searching trip to India
has increasingly acquired a slightly contemptuous air
It's often used to refer to young schoolgirl groupies of South Korean boy bands who show up en masse to scream at them whenever they come to Thailand
For instance: "Let's not go to the mall today
the place will be crawling with ting." In general
it can be used to describe someone who behaves frivolously
But now that krian and ting haircuts are no longer mandatory
will the words maintain their linguistic edge
Will their social relevance become a thing of the past now that kids can wear Bon Jovi hair to school
The history of krian and ting didn't start in school
According to an article by historian and scholar Nithi Eawsriwong
the very short haircut of students today dates back to World War II
there was a serious outbreak of lice among Thais
and the short haircut was used as a way to stop the epidemic
While schoolchildren are now free from the long-standing regulation
high school boys who join the territorial defence training will have to keep their hair closely cropped as required by the military
Usually each school has its own punishments when students fail to keep their hair up to standard
while in others teachers snip part of their hair as a punishment
so that they will need to have a haircut later
teenage boys and girls have been acting their age: trying to break the rules
many stylise their haircut in such a way that they can wear it freely after school
but keep it tidy enough to pass the checking
For boys it was rather harder to make a difference
the Hollywood action-thriller Speed starred Keanu Reeves sporting a razor-sharp short haircut
a style which immediately became fashionable among teenage boys during the late 90s
boys didn't seem to see the krian hairstyle as embarrassing or uncool
the trend for male students has been to have the sides of the head cropped short but leaving the top in a funnel shape
Teenagers skirting a rule like that perfectly exemplifies the meaning of the now-endangered word krian

Bullying is still prevalent in schools across Malaysia
with many of the bullies recording their heinous activities for their own pleasure
One such video has since been circulating social media
The MALAYSIA MOST VIRAL Twitter page recently share a video of school girls at SMJK Krian in Parit Buntar
slapping their fellow student in the ladies room and telling her not to cry
“What are school students these days being exposed to for them to behave this way?”
the bullies (dressed in green and purple T-shirts) could be seen cornering the victim (in the yellow T-shirt) in the school washroom
The bully in the green T-shirt then tells the victim not to cry and threatened to slap the victim 3 times
The bully in purple chimed in and said that she will slap the victim twice
The bully in green then encouraged others to enter the bathroom to watch
and told them not to hit the victim as she will be the one hitting the victim
one of the girls told the first bully not to slap the victim too hard
The bully in green then slapped the victim 2 more times
fixing the victim’s hair after each slap
A girl in purple then slapped the victim once
to which the others told her that the victim has had enough
nodded at the bullies’ instructions and endured the slaps
We genuinely hope that the school authorities look into this matter and take the appropriate action against the bullies
We also hope that the bullies’ parents will intervene in their children’s horrible behaviour towards their fellow student
What would you do if you were the victim’s parents
Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section
