caused by the formation of the 91S tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean
have led to a series of boat accidents across the country
including in the popular tourist destinations of Bali and Labuan Bajo
severe weather caused a boat carrying seven foreign tourists to capsize off the coast of Kelor Island in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT)
Head of the Maumere Search and Rescue Agency in NTT
departed from Labuan Bajo in West Manggarai Regency at around 1:00 a.m
for a trip to several small islands near the popular fishing town
strong winds and high waves caused the anchor to drag
which ultimately led to the boat capsizing," he said on Saturday
Fathur added that a phinisi ship that happened to pass through the area was able to rescue all ten people on board
"After receiving the report of the accident
and safely transported all the passengers back to Labuan Bajo."

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The high number of tourists in Labuan Bajo
does not match increasing hotel occupancy in the area
The tourists prefer to stay on boats and engage in various activities there
the Acting Director of the Labuan Bajo Flores Authority (BPOLBF)
He stated that more than 80 percent of tourists live on board
whether it is a traditional pinisi ship or a modern safari ship
there are packages offered by operators in Labuan Bajo
where they spend more time living on board," said Frans on Tuesday
Tourist boats in Labuan Bajo generally offer trips to several points in the Komodo National Park area and its surroundings
Various tourist activities are usually included in this trip
Frans encouraged travel agents in Labuan Bajo to sell tour packages in Labuan Bajo and several areas of Flores Island
touring is not only done by sea but also by land
and we also encourage new destinations in Flores
so it is more comfortable for tourists to visit," he said
Frans noted that Labuan Bajo's tourism sector is growing positively due to the high interest of tourists in visiting several tourist destinations
This is supported by direct international flights
making it easier for foreign tourists to visit
he admitted that during the last Eid holiday
there was a decrease in tourist visits compared to the previous year
the number of tourists recorded was around 49,634 until April 2025
there is a shift or it can be said that there is a one percent gap
but the point we want to convey is that the trend is still relatively good," he said
Frans is optimistic that the number of tourist visits can be increased by 2025
especially with direct international flights from Malaysia and Singapore to Labuan Bajo
bringing many tourists from different countries
"This market composition is usually divided based on the country of origin
there are still five top rmakets which are China
and there are still conventional markets like Europe and America declining
but they are quite stable in visiting destinations in Labuan Bajo Flores," said Frans Teguh

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The West Manggarai Regency government in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province will ban the use of plastic bottled water in Labuan Bajo
This was revealed by the Regent of West Manggarai
when attending the launch of the Clean Tourism Movement program in Labuan Bajo on Saturday
The launch was attended by Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Enik Ermawati
According to Endi, the ban aims to reduce waste volume in Labuan Bajo, one of Indonesia's leading tourist destinations. He hopes that the Port Authority and Harbor Master's Office (KSOP) will assist in checking tourist boats operating in the area to ensure that they do not carry plastic or glass bottled water.
Endi hopes the boats will be barred from departing if found carrying bottled water
“The goal is to maintain our environment well and ensure the sustainability of our tourism,” he said
Ni Luh Enik Ermawati said that the Clean Tourism Movement in Labuan Bajo was launched to create a globally competitive tourist destination
“Not only can it increase the awareness of local communities
but it may allow for the destination to become competitive at a global scale,” she said
The Clean Tourism Movement is one of the main programs of the Ministry of Tourism
that has since been launched in 16 locations spread across various priority destinations such as Labuan Bajo
The Tourism Ministry will provide assistance
and monitoring for the Clean Tourism Movement
with each destination expected to implement integrated waste management
which is deemed crucial as tourism activities have so far generated waste in the sea
The Clean Tourism Movement in Labuan Bajo took place in two separate locations
namely the Marina Waterfront area and Pede Beach
The event included a massive garbage cleaning activity involving 2,000 participants
with the collected trash weighing more than one ton

“We inform you that Komodo International Airport has reopened today to serve you,” the airport announced on its official Instagram account
A total of 12 flights were initially scheduled to depart from Komodo Airport on the reopening day
According to the Flight Information Display System (FIDS)
six of these flights were subsequently canceled
including those to Denpasar at 8:55 AM and 5:35 PM
The airport advises travelers to verify flight schedules with their respective airlines
The closure of Komodo Airport was implemented following a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the government due to the volcanic ash from Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki affecting flight operations
Flight operations were initially expected to resume on Monday afternoon
This extended closure was attributed to the renewed eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki on Tuesday
Head of the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM)
the eruption produced loud noises heard up to Maumere City
The twin-peaked volcano also generated two lava flows
each reaching distances of 3.8 and 3.9 kilometers
“Continuous eruptions are caused by the current open system of Mount Lewotobi
which allows for direct magma supply leading to eruptions
This is indicated by the absence of shallow or deep volcanic earthquakes,” Wafid explained on Wednesday

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Labuan Bajo Flores Tourism Authority (BPOLBF) is set to develop Parapuar Park as a new tourist destination in Labuan Bajo
A groundbreaking ceremony for the park is scheduled for August 8
Frans Teguh, Acting Director of BPOLBF, envisions Parapuar Park as a fresh option for visitors to Labuan Bajo, especially considering the planned periodic closures and an open-close system for Komodo National Park in 2025
Parapuar Park has a strategic location in Labuan Bajo’s city center
just five minutes from Komodo International Airport and seven minutes from the Marina Waterfront area
“I think this is a strategic and easily accessible location at an altitude of approximately 238 meters above sea level
It offers panoramic views where we can enjoy both sunrise and sunset,” Teguh said as reported by Antara on Wednesday
providing a viable alternative to Komodo National Park during its planned closures
“We are committed to preserving the park's ecosystem and of course
this is one of the contributions to promote local wisdom,” he emphasized
Nia Niscaya, the Tourism and Creative Economy Main Expert of the Tourism Ministry, believed Parapuar Park would contribute to Labuan Bajo's growing popularity as a tourist destination, rivaling Bali.
with Labuan Bajo's search volume approaching 2023 levels in the first seven months of 2024
Based on Global Distribution System (GDS) data
Labuan Bajo recorded 4,137,720 searches in 2024
compared to 4,899,240 in the entire previous year
“Labuan Bajo is indeed a complementary destination to Bali,” Nia concluded

UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is working to develop Gili Iyang Island into a pristine
eco-friendly tourist destination similar to Labuan Bajo
aiming to attract both domestic and international visitors
This transformation will involve a multidisciplinary approach
drawing on expertise in areas like environmental science
This vision was outlined by UNAIR’s Vice-Rector for Research
during the unveiling of several of UNAIR’s innovative products and initiatives on Gili Iyang Island
The six products introduced include the Taman Toga herbal garden from the Faculty of Pharmacy
a water refill station from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST)
and a tourism museum developed by the Faculty of Vocational Studies
with contributions from the Faculty of Pharmacy
the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences
This event was part of the 2024 Airlangga Community Development Hub (ACDH)
which began in 2022 as part of UNAIR’s community service program
and digital economies that are rooted in local wisdom in two villages on Gili Iyang Island: Banraas and Bancarama
“Both local and international tourists will be drawn to a destination that is clean
This is what we aim to create on Gili Iyang
and UNAIR is ready to support the project through a multidisciplinary approach,” said Prof
places like Finland have established model green islands
and Gili Iyang has the potential to follow suit
“I’m optimistic that Gili Iyang can progress further
Puspaningsih also shared that UNAIR conducted research to understand the island’s unusually high oxygen levels
Satellite studies revealed that the highest oxygen concentrations were found not on land
These organisms produce oxygen through photosynthesis by absorbing CO2
To maintain and boost oxygen levels on Gili Iyang
UNAIR plans to cultivate microalgae on land starting next year
UNAIR will plant microalgae on a one-hectare plot
allowing oxygen to be produced from both the sea and the land
This is one of UNAIR’s concrete steps to enhance oxygen levels on Gili Iyang,” Prof
Puspaningsih proposed planting trees and crops around the area that would provide economic benefits to the local community
such as medicinal plants or other crops that could be used in health supplements
This initiative would help turn Gili Iyang into a lush
Puspaningsih observed plastic waste along the coastline
UNAIR intends to help the community recycle plastic waste into useful materials and convert straw into livestock feed
“Our goal is to make Gili Iyang a fully integrated environment where sustainable farming
and circular economy can all coexist,” she said
Head of UNAIR’s Institute of Life Sciences
elaborated on UNAIR’s plans to enhance oxygen levels on Gili Iyang through microalgae cultivation on the one-hectare site
The microalgae industry has a wide range of applications
“We’ve designed a machine that can convert microalgae into biodiesel
Zaidan envisions a future where visitors to Gili Iyang take home microalgae-based products
such as health supplements or facial masks
the microalgae cultivation will have a capacity of 10 tons
Gili Iyang will not be expected to maintain its status as having the second-highest oxygen levels in the world but rise to first
bringing significant benefits to the local population
UNAIR also unveiled a blueprint for developing Gili Iyang as a Green Island and as a partner region for the university
The event’s highlight included a social outreach program offering mass medical services
along with assistance from the Gili Iyang Health Center and the Sumenep Health Department
in addition to the mass medical treatments
the Faculty of Medicine and the Midwifery Program conducted VIA (Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid) screenings for cervical cancer
doctors can detect potential cervical cancer through color changes in the tissue
Santoso emphasized that cervical cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Indonesia
indicating that the prevalence remains high
The VIA method provides an effective early detection tool
and given the high prevalence of cervical cancer
we’re offering more than just medical treatments—we’re also providing cancer screenings,” he said
The mass medical services included basic health checks
supported by the Faculty of Vocational Studies for early screenings and the Faculty of Pharmacy for medication distribution
These services included blood sugar and blood pressure tests

and Labuan Bajo remain the most popular choices for foreign tourists visiting Indonesia
according to data from the Golden Rama travel agency
The stunning natural beauty of these three locations is the primary draw for visitors
said foreign tourists continue to favor destinations in eastern Indonesia
“The majority of tourists head to eastern Indonesia
and Labuan Bajo,” he stated in Jakarta on Monday
Eastern Indonesia has some of the world's most breathtaking dive sites, particularly Raja Ampat
Tourists flock to the region to explore its vibrant underwater ecosystems and diverse marine life.
“Eastern Indonesia's tourism potential is extraordinary
It's home to the world's most beautiful dive spots,” Madu said
echoing a common sentiment among foreign visitors
Although he did not specify the exact number of tourist visits through Golden Rama
he noted that most clients originated from Asian countries
the premium segment is dominated by European nations
as well as Middle Eastern countries like the United Arab Emirates
“We offer luxurious Raja Ampat packages priced at over US$16,000 per person for seven to ten days,” Madu added
He revealed that tourist preferences vary based on their geographic origin
Northern Europeans tend to visit Indonesia during their winter months
“While Middle Eastern tourists prefer to visit during the summer season in their region.”
Madu pinned hopes for more widespread tourism development beyond Bali, Labuan Bajo
“Many people in Europe and America equate Indonesia with Bali
and it takes consistent government efforts to showcase Indonesia's diverse offerings,” he remarked

Despite Labuan Bajo appearing to be safe and the airport operating as usual
the disaster agency has indicated that the situation could remain uncertain until December 1
leaving the travel industry in a state of limbo
as they face the upcoming peak season in December
chairman of the East Nusa Tenggara Association of Indonesian Travel Agencies (ASITA)
said: “Since the first eruption on November 3
the temporary closure of Komodo Airport has (raised) concerns among travellers – ASITA members have reported receiving many cancellations.”
According to data from the Labuan Bajo Flores Authority Implementing Agency
around 6,000 visitors were unable to enter Labuan Bajo due to the closure of Komodo International Airport from November 10 to 13
The closures led to cancellations at 32 hotels
with occupancy rates dropping by nearly 87 per cent
further declining to just 10 per cent from November 3 to 16
ASITA West Manggarai reported its members received massive cancellations and delays
leading to losses exceeding US$64,000 for travel packages between November 8 and 14
expressed concern that cancellations may continue as the government has not yet downgraded the alert level to “safe,” given that volcanic activity remains at a high level
“This is force majeure; no one can predict the natural disaster
the authorities need to push out the message that Labuan Bajo remains unaffected and is safe for travel
the government must release a statement (clarifying) that the distance between Lewotobi and Labuan Bajo is very far,” added Leonardus
said the travel industry is in limbo due to the lack of certainty
with partners and clients continuing to inquire about the next group departure in December or seeking to reschedule those affected by the recent closure
Abed still holds high hopes that the situation will improve before December

data from the Ministry of Transportation reported that nine out of 10 airports in East Nusa Tenggara have resumed normal operations
The only exception is Frans Seda Airport in Maumere
which remains closed due to the impact of volcanic ash
I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali and Lombok International Airport have also returned to normal after cancellations from November 12 to 14

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The West Manggarai Police, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), has successfully identified the body of a woman found on the shore of Pink Beach
Komodo National Park on Thursday afternoon
it has been identified," said the West Manggarai Police Chief Adj
The victim has been identified as Juliani (32 years old)
Chief of the West Manggarai Police Criminal Investigation Unit
explained that the identification was made by the Indonesian Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (Inafis) team of the West Manggarai Police
we managed to uncover the identity of the corpse," he said
involved taking photographs of the body from four different angles and recording the fingerprints
This led to the discovery of the floating body's identity
"The process of identification was quite difficult because the body had started to decompose
but after matching the fingerprint search results using the vinegar method
the identity of the body was eventually revealed," he said
He explained that the vinegar method was used to reveal the papillary lines on the fingers
as the outer skin had peeled off and begun to decompose
"Of the 10 fingers on both left and right hands
while the other fingers did not have those lines," said Lufthi
The identification also involved comparing all identity data

"We also matched the fingerprint data at the police and the e-ID card to ensure the identity of the body," he said
He explained that Juliani's family was contacted to confirm her identity and conduct a physical examination
Information from the family suggests that Juliani was likely swept away by the flash flood that struck the Wera and Ambalawi Districts

Labuan Bajo. The Komodo National Park Authority (BTNK) in Labuan Bajo
plans to implement regular closures on certain days starting in mid-2025 as part of its conservation efforts
BTNK Head Hendrikus Rani Siga announced that the closure plan is still in the preliminary stages
The process will involve initial assessments
The primary goal is to reduce the pressure on the park and mitigate the negative impacts of tourism activities
"We hope to implement this by mid-2025 because the current intensity of use in Komodo National Park is very high
it is necessary for the park to recover or take a break from usage pressures
Nature also needs to be taken care of and given a chance to rest
We must have a collective awareness that conservation is the most important thing," Hendrikus stated on Thursday
Another objective of these regular closures is to boost tourist attractions outside the park
it is expected to enhance tourist attractions outside the national park
thereby increasing the local economy," Hendrikus added
Acting President Director of the Labuan Bajo Flores Authority (BPOLBF) Frans Teguh noted that regular closures in conservation areas like Komodo National Park are common practices necessary for recovery and regeneration processes
BTNK recorded a total of 300,488 international and domestic tourists visiting Komodo National Park throughout 2023
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Komodo National Park Office (BTNK) in West Manggarai Regency
This initiative aims to reduce the pressure in the park
minimize the negative impact of tourist activities
and revive alternative tourist destinations surrounding the park area
emphasized that the closure plan is currently under informal discussion
“The concept is that if we close the park for a day
tourists will hopefully explore attractions outside the KNP
This could potentially encourage them to extend their stay in Labuan Bajo,” he explained in Labuan Bajo on July 15
Hendrikus stressed that scientific studies will precede any implementation of temporary closures
These studies will focus on the park's carrying capacity
determining the optimal number of visitors that can balance environmental conservation with the needs of the tourism industry
tourist packages would be designed to focus on attractions outside the park
He expected improved management and organization of these alternative destinations to enhance the tourist experience
The Center for Tourism Studies at Gadjah Mada University (UGM)
is already conducting a study to determine the KNP's carrying capacity
This research is critical for ensuring the park's long-term sustainability
especially considering the significant rise in tourist arrivals.
the Komodo National Park welcomed 300,488 visitors
a substantial increase compared to 170,354 in the previous year
The Komodo National Park Office (BTNK) is also developing an application called SiOra to monitor visitor numbers within the park
such as ticket booking for various KNP destinations
“This app allows us to track visitation numbers across various destinations
and the app will be further developed to control access
If the maximum number of visitors is reached on a particular day
the park will be temporarily closed,” Hendrikus remarked
and Culture Agency (Disparekrafbud) wholeheartedly supported the discourse on temporary closures for the sake of conservation and long-term sustainability
“The temporary closures can also have a positive impact by encouraging tourists to explore destinations beyond the KNP
fostering a more balanced distribution of visitors and benefiting local villages,” stated Stefan Jemsifori
