UNAIR NEWS – The fifth edition of Learning with Community (BBK-5) by Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) provided an opportunity for students to launch a program titled “Secure Your Documents with Digital Archiving.” Held on Tuesday
the initiative involved door-to-door approach to households in Jejel Village
The program sought to familiarize residents with digital archiving methods
as a secure and efficient solution for document storage
The initiative was met with enthusiastic support from the local community
The program was divided into several stages: pre-tests
In addition to introducing Google Drive as a reliable storage option
guiding residents through the process on their personal mobile devices
stated that the program aimed to bridge the technology gap for the general public
“We want to equip residents with the fundamental skills to use Google Drive for storing important documents
ensuring they have safer and more secure backups,” she said
“Relying on cabinets to store documents increases the risk of damage
especially since most documents are paper-based and prone to water damage or natural disasters.”
most had never used Google Drive for document storage
instead relying on traditional methods such as folders and cabinets
Some even used WhatsApp as a storage alternative
expressed concerns about the security of physical storage
a 2022 Library and Information Science student
pointed out the shortcomings of using WhatsApp for document storage
“WhatsApp is not a durable or reliable solution for storing important files
as the data can be easily lost compared to the stability of Google Drive,” she explained
The residents showed significant progress in understanding digital archiving after the program
Post-test results revealed that 3 of the 24 participants achieved perfect scores
14 residents demonstrated a strong understanding of the material
This program aligns with two key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 4
The initiative aims to provide lasting benefits and serve as a foundation for implementing practical and sustainable document storage solutions

Quality check of the filtered water from coconut shell-based filter
ITS News – The availability of clean water is important for life
but it is not uncommon for people to still have difficulties in their fulfillment due to various things such as pollution
the Community Service Team (Abmas) of the Institute of Technology Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) designed a water filter made from coconut shell
The research takes place in Sumberwudi Village
where the community encountered water pollution problems and difficulties in the filtering water process
well water is the main focus to meet the daily needs of clean water
the healthy water becomes brackish and makes people switch to using the flow of water of Bengawan Solo River
the Abmas program initiator said that the large amount of sludge deposits carried from the river water makes the community have to do the screening process first
factory waste and household waste that is deliberately dumped into the Bengawan Solo River add to the length of the series of problems that must be faced to get clean water
“People still use a simple deposition system
so it can take up to 24 hours to wait for the mud to settle,” Linda said
It is indeed quite difficult for the community because of the large and urgent need for clean water
That’s why there is still a lot of water that contains silt and has a brownish colour that has just been distributed to people’s homes
Linda Silvia (right) with the team explained how the water filter works
The alumnus of ITS Physics Department then took the initiative to make water filters more effective and efficient to overcome this clean water problem
He uses the coconut shell as the base material of activated carbon in the water filter
their availability in nature is also abundant,” She said
Together with four lecturers from the same department
Linda designed a water filter with a backwash system
“That system is chosen so that the filter can wash filter media,” explained the lecturer who active in the Advanced Materials Laboratory of ITS Physics Department
the water filter media used consists of gravel
The filter is equipped with a clean water tank
To maintain the quality of water filtering results
a set of water quality testers are also included in the water filter package resulting from the collaboration of lecturers and nine students of the ITS Physics Department who attended the Community Service Program (KKN)
Desain Rangkaian Filter Tunggal dengan tempurung kelapa sebagai karbon aktif yang diterapkan di Desa Sumberwudi
water quality is assessed based on the amount of dissolved solid substances or total dissolved solids (TDS) in water
“All of them obtained from the results of testing with water quality testers
which will test periodically,” added Linda
A total of two filter units have two different places at once
A single water filter in one of the mosques in Sumberwudi Village
While the double water filter in SMPN 1 Karanggeneng
The filter placed in the school is expected to be a learning medium for its students
Linda and the team hope to be an example for the surrounding community to make a more effective filter independently
“How to make it quite easy; the material is also easy to get
the community can model so that the supply of clean water can be available at any time,” she concluded

Namun pengakuan Zainal Anshori dibantah Munarman

Zainal Anshori kemudian mengungkap bagaimana awalnya FPI Lamongan berbaiat kepada pimpinan Islamic State of Syria and Iraq (ISIS) pimpinan Abu Bakar al-Baghdadi
Munarman pun menampik keberadaan FPI cabang Lamongan
FPI Lamongan telah lama dibekukan sebelum dia tergabung dalam kepengurusan FPI
"FPI Lamongan telah dibekukan sebelum JAD ada," sambung dia

UNAIR NEWS – According to World Health Organization (WHO)
elderly population is expected to increase until 2020
It will not be a problem if the elderly are healthy
it will bring a negative impact if they have health problems causing disability
or lack of social and environmental support to the elderly population
To deal with the problem, three Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) Faculty of Nursing (FKp) students
and Purwestri Dyah Kinanti took the initiative to raise public awareness on the importance of family support to dementia sufferers
The three students took part in Student Creativity Program in Community Service (PKMM) entitled “DESA SEMEN” (Cadre for Health Dementia Awareness) in Yungyang Village
“The series of DESA SEMEN programs started with the composition of Dementia module as a guideline for teams and cadres
the dissemination of dementia and the formation of DESA SEMEN cadres consisted of elderly cadres and elderly families
reminiscence therapy and art therapy and finally the implementation of cadre practices and exercise activities with the elderly
The selection of Yungyang village as a place of implementation was based on its large number of elderly people with dementia
and the absence of a cadre role in dealing with dementia problems in the area
dissemination and provision of daily activity boards (ADL) and family support checklist were also given for evaluation and monitoring of DESA SEMEN program implementation at family level,” said Dinda
there will be better awareness on the importance of family support for the elderly in dementia
The life quality of the elderly with dementia will be improved and the village will be pioneer for village that concerns with health of the elderly

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A junior high school teacher in Lamongan shaved the heads of dozens of hijabi students for not wearing an inner hijab or ciput as it is locally known
This action was met with strong protests from a number of parents
demanding the teacher to be disrespectfully fired.

A lecturer at the Teaching and Education Faculty (FKIP) of the Surabaya Muhammadiyah University
Holy said that education through violence is not a solution to instilling character education
She emphasized that the national educationalist Ki Hajar Dewantara promotes the concept of humanistic learning so that education is provided in a good way as it is aimed at building their skills and character
There are many approaches to be applied to teach the character of students or children
especially in the context of teenagers,” Holy said on Tuesday
as quoted from the university’s page
and friendly approach would produce a more positive response because adolescents need a friendly teacher rather than a dictator one.
“Regarding the perfection in wearing a hijab
teachers should be able to apply other methods than cutting their hair
which will certainly cause them trauma,” Holy said
Holy said teachers could call students into a private room and provide an understanding of which parts must be covered by a hijab
Teachers could also fix their hijabs and then praise and appreciate them for wearing a hijab
“This is in line with our motto: ing garso sung tuladha ing madya mangin karso tut wuri handayani (literally translated: In front
giving support),” Holy concluded with Ki Hajar Dewantara’s educational ideology

the 52-year-old resident of East Java’s Lamongan regency has dreamed of emigrating to the “Islamic State” in Iraq and Syria
drawn as if by a magnet to the conflict zone
violent practices carried out by the Islamic State (IS) group such as beheading non-believers and chopping off the hands of criminals are indeed taught in Islam
“If we want to see how the Islamic Law is actually implemented
“Indonesia does not move forward because it does not implement Islamic law properly.”
At least 16 fellow inhabitants of Lamongan – a relatively prosperous farming and fishing area on the north coast of Java – have departed to join IS in the Middle East in recent years
The Lamongan man said he and some friends had started an underground group to talk about the situation in Syria
They get information about IS over Telegram
and use it to coordinate their almost daily meetings
“Most of the time we’re just napping and grilling fish,” he confessed
Traveling to the Middle East has become difficult
Lots of friends have been arrested,” said the man
It was the home of three brothers who carried out the Bali bombings that killed 202 people in October 2002
and was blamed on the militant group Jemaah Islamiyah
Amrozi and Ali Ghufron were executed in 2008; Ali Imron is serving a life sentence
A network of radicals originating in Lamongan has extremist roots that run deep in the area and have changed over the years into pro-IS sentiment
according to the Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict (IPAC)
“The trajectory of an extremist network in Lamongan
East Java illustrates how support for local jihadi struggles has been transformed into support for ISIS,” IPAC said in a report published in April 2015
“One of the most important lessons of the Lamongan network is that pro-ISIS groups in Indonesia have emerged from existing radical networks that have never gone away
regrouped and regenerated but they are not new,” the think-tank added
it is not unlawful for people to emigrate in a quest to join groups like IS
some 237 adults and 46 children from Indonesia had arrived in Syria or Iraq
according to the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT)
Lamongan police said they do not have exact numbers for how many residents have left for what locals call Daulah Islamiyah
Residents have two ways to leave the country to join the Middle East-based group
according to a village official in Brondong who declined to be identified
The first is by putting in paper work in which they claim to be migrant workers
we cannot reject their request because it is our duty to serve people if they request a supporting letter,” the official told BenarNews
The other way out is by claiming they want to study aboard – the method used by Wildan Mukhollad
His brother acknowledged that his family encouraged and supported Widan’s dream of studying overseas
“We chipped in to collect money because he said he wanted to go to Egypt,” Abdul Latif Al-Haq said of his brother
Wildan attended the al-Islam Boarding School in Tenggulun
founded by the late Ali Ghufron and Amrozi
told BenarNews in an interview at her home in Payman
a village in Solokuro sub-district of Lamongan
When he was at the senior-high school level
he left the al-Islam Boarding School to study at Al-Azhar University in Cairo
where his half-sister was studying at the time
he left his sister without telling her where he was going
The youth made his way to Syria where he communicated with his family via Facebook
“When we heard the news about Wildan’s death
then the name of ISIS emerged in the media,” Abdul Latif told BenarNews
The family believed that the young man was fighting against Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian civil war
Assad has been accused of war crimes in the conflict
which involves many factions of fighters including jihadist groups al-Nusra Front and IS
We have to admit it,” Abdul Latif told his mother
The family has not received any official word of Wildan’s death
But if you get information that he is alive
a resident of Lamongan regency in East Java
Seven members of another family – a husband
and five children – departed Lamongan for the Middle East at different times since 2015
and one of his sons were captured by fighters with the al-Nusra Front
reportedly was killed in battle; the oldest son was injured in action
A fourth son was deported by Turkish authorities when he was caught trying to cross into Syria
The family sold a home to finance the trip
Tholiatun visited her suddenly one day and “asked me to sign a handwritten letter saying I allowed her to sell the family house,” said Maghfiroh
Maghfiroh has communicated with her aunt in Syria
and learned about the death of one of her cousins
I was very sad because she was the only aunt I have
as she took care of me since I was a child,” Maghfiroh told BenarNews
Rizal Amin is another son of Lamongan who died fighting for IS
he was infamous as the leader of one of three gangs in Brondong sub-district
with a reputation for drinking and brawling
But after his father’s furniture business went bankrupt
and began diligently attending an exclusive Quran study group
“He was one of our residents who died in Syria because of joining ISIS,” a village administrator who declined to be identified told BenarNews
A 27-year-old man who lives in the same village has a similar story to Rizal
A construction worker who has worked in Malaysia
he recently stopped drinking and hanging out with his friends
“I am waiting for the readiness of my heart

Inc.’s (ICTSI) operation in Lamongan Regency
has received the inaugural call of Meratus Line’s SBON service
The weekly domestic service is operated by two 629 TEU multipurpose vessels and calls the Indonesian ports of Surabaya
The recent addition of Lamongan to the port rotation provides customers from the Lamongan and Tuban area with access to the Makassar and Ambon markets
“We congratulate Meratus Line on the newly added Lamongan Port call to their SBON service” said Patrick Chan
“With the new service calling at our terminal
it will provide our surrounding customers with closer port access and an empty depot located in the same facility that allows trucks to complete two-way running with containers
we expect a reduction in their transport costs and overall carbon emissions,” added Chan
The collaboration between EJMT and Meratus Line is aligned with the latter’s goal of enhancing connectivity in Indonesia and enabling industry owners to expand their businesses.

The Elnino phenomenon that took place last year has resulted in rice prices continuing to increase
El Niño's dry weather has hit Indonesian rice supplies causing record price rises for consumers and crop failures for farmers
Indonesia - It was still pitch-black outside when Indonesian housewife Sutinah made her way to a local police station early one morning last month
hoping to avoid queues and take advantage of a government scheme offering affordable rice
the 52-year-old from the East Java town of Pasuruan was still shocked to see hundreds of likeminded residents already waiting patiently in line
"By the time we got here it was already busy
We had no other choice because the price of rice in the market is very expensive," said Sutinah
who like many Indonesians goes by just one name
The mother-of-two queued for two hours to buy two 5 kg bags of rice for 102,000 Indonesian rupiah ($6.51) - a saving of about 50,000 rupiah compared to supermarket and market prices
Indonesia was self-sufficient in rice in the 1980s before farmland was used to build housing for the booming population
which now stands at more than 270 million people
more than 90% of Indonesian families still consume rice every day
providing more than half their daily calories
The Southeast Asian nation's per capita annual rice consumption stands at about 95 kg (210 lb) - much higher than the average yearly consumption of other carbohydrates like corn
the Food and Agriculture Organization's representative in Indonesia and Timor-Leste
Such is the importance of the staple to Indonesia's economy
culture and society that high food inflation contributed to the downfall of strongman President Suharto in 1998
Last year was relatively hot due to the El Niño weather pattern
and a prolonged dry season in parts of Indonesia saw rice production fall by around 18%
The sprawling archipelago is due to enter the dry season again next month
Indonesians often say if you have not eaten rice
and the staple grain is not just a relatively low-cost source of sustenance for most households
but part of the country's cultural identity
Rice has been an integral part of Indonesian history and culture since ancient times
and its cultivation can even be seen in the famous 9th century Borobudur temple complex in central Java
international relations officer at farmers' group the Indonesian Peasants' Alliance
"Rice is one of the most important agricultural commodities in Indonesia ..
a symbol of culture and tradition," Krishnayanti told Context
Rice paddies are also a distinctive part of Indonesia's landscape
especially in regions popular with tourists
Asia director at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)
Indonesia inspects rice plants in his rice field
Indonesia walks among the seedling of rice ready to plant
"Rising rice prices and reduced availability can lead to food insecurity
increasing the risk of social unrest and protests," he said
"Farmers experiencing crop failures lose income and may face debt
further contributing to economic hardship and social instability," Shin said
adding that Indonesia is set to import up to 5 million tonnes of rice in 2024
But an increased reliance on rice imports can make Indonesia more vulnerable to price fluctuations and supply chain disruptions in exporting countries
"Importing large quantities of rice can put a strain on the government's budget and weaken the agricultural sector
which is crucial for rural employment and food security," Shin added
Indonesian President Joko Widodo last year drafted in the military to help with planting and subsidised fertilizer distribution
Acknowledging the pressures from rising rice prices to consumers and the more than 15 million households that grow food
the Indonesian government has also begun to sell discounted rice and provide cash handouts to families worst hit
environmental economist for sustainable food systems at think-tank the World Resources Institute Indonesia called for more diversification of sources of carbohydrates to help Indonesians be more resilient to rice price fluctuations
Distributing drought-tolerant rice seed varieties to farmers in affected regions was also important
the government should continue to invest in improving irrigation infrastructure
including rehabilitating existing canals and building new ones
to enhance water management and reduce dependence on rainfall
Early warning systems to monitor weather conditions and provide timely information to farmers about potential droughts
also allow them to take preventative measures
This should go hand-in-hand with providing training to farmers on drought-tolerant agricultural practices
water conservation techniques and post-harvest storage
adding that crop insurance schemes and diversifying crops offered greater security
Technology is very much part of the solution
with drones and sensors able to monitor crops
and digital platforms enabling farmers to share information and best practices
Apps can also help consumers find the best deals for rice.
70-year-old farmer Salimah said extreme weather had made life more difficult
Longer droughts had forced her to grow more crops that are resistant to dry weather
most farmers leave their land empty because the weather is too hot," she said

Indonesian goalkeeper Choirul Huda has died after colliding with his teammate during a match between Lamongan Football Club and Semen Padang, aged 38.
Huda, an Indonesian football legend who had played more than 500 matches for Lamongan – commonly known as Persela – rushed off his goal line in the 43rd minute of Sunday’s game at Surajaya Stadium and collided with defender Ramon Rodrigues.
Video footage showed the sickening incident that left the club captain Huda collapsed on the turf, and he was carried off the pitch on a stretcher after losing consciousness before medical staff at the stadium in East Java attempted to resuscitate him, according to Doctor Yudistiro Andri Nugroho, head of the emergency Care Unit at the Soegiri Hospital, Lamongan.
Huda was transported to the hospital’s intensive care unit where he was given breathing assistance and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, with Dr Nugroho confirming that Huda suffered “impacts on the chest and lower jaw.
The footballer was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the Soegiri Hospital, and Dr Hugroho added that “initial analysis” suggested a “possibility of head trauma and neck trauma”, resulting in him “stopping breathing and a cardiac arrest”.
His fellow players had gone to straight to the hospital after the final whistle following their 2-0 win over Semen Padang and supporters later went to his house with candles, according to local media reports.
On their official Twitter page, Persela carried “farewell cap” above a photo of Huda. According to the team's Instagram page, the club will retire the number one jersey worn by Huda.
The Instagram post read: “Thank you for your constant dedication. Thank you for the inspiration you gave to Persela, Lamongan and Indonesian football.”
Huda was capped three times for the Indoesnia national team from 2014, and leaves behind a wife and two children.
