GARUT - In the early hours of Friday morning (1/12/2023)
it was reported that landslides had occurred at a number of points in Banjarwangi District
conveyed this information to the Garut Regency Communication and Information Service (Diskominfo) Team
Tanjung Jaya Village and Ciawitali Village
A 15 meter long road was affected in Lawang Angin
the access road was buried by the remains of landslides
"(Later) three telephone poles were found in Cikondang Village
which had collapsed and their cables hit the road
then there was ground movement in the yards of residents' houses in Ciawitali Village
1 half of the village road in Singkur Village
as well as houses belonging to residents of Cilogawa Village
Mulyajaya Village," explained Bambang
He revealed that specifically for main road traffic
because it was feared that further landslides would occur
due to the weight of vehicles passing through that lane
were that the landslides occurred due to the fairly high intensity of rain in several areas
"Based on our monitoring and information obtained from witnesses
it is estimated that a landslide occurred on the road at 01.30 WIB (early morning)
the cause and effect of the landslide occurred due to the intensity of the rain which was quite heavy and occurred overnight without stopping," he added
The Garut Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) team has carried out field checks
Bambang also mentioned coordination with the Garut Regency Public Works Spatial Planning Service (PUPR)
because one of the affected roads had just been completed
and is coordinating PUPR for construction that has just been completed and will follow up because it is still maintaining information from the PPK," he added
Bambang appealed to road users who will cross Banjarwangi-Singajaya to always be careful
because there are several points affected by landslides
"And stay alert if there are further landslides on roads or residential areas," he concluded
“We have ube running through our veins,” Albin Lawang tells Broadsheet, referencing the vibrant purple yam
a key ingredient in many Filipino desserts
The co-owner of Pecks Road is a personal trainer who has worked in the kitchens of The Kettle Black and Higher Ground
He founded the venue with his brothers AJ and Arbi Lawang
travel spots and more – curated by those who know
ube is always on the menu – whether as a doughnut or a drink
“It’s our way of showcasing our being Filipino and all the days we spent with our lola before and after school,” says Albin
including the “Filipino banh mi” with chicharron (fried pork rinds) and pork marinated in Peck’s Pinoy barbeque sauce
and the longanisa Peck-muffin – a take on a McMuffin where baked egg
house-made Southwest and barbeque sauces are served on an English muffin
But the main attractions are the crullers and yeasted doughnuts
The doughnuts are made in a production kitchen in the CBD before being delivered to the CBD and Caroline Springs stores each morning
The three-day process begins with kneading and resting the dough overnight
cut and proofed again for flavour and aeration
they’re ready to fry – but timing depends on factors like weather and hydration
“I watch it like a hawk to know exactly when to fry,” says Albin
“Because of the lengthy process there’s a high risk of over-fermentation and three days of work could go to waste.”
There are glazed doughnuts, Caramilk crullers and turon bombolones
The purple-on-purple creation sees a bombolone filled with whipped ube cream
coated in ube sugar and crowned with meringue shards and ube polvoron
With Mabuti – who is behind Kariton’s expansion to Sydney and
the team is more ambitious about Pecks Road
“It is all about building brands,” says Mabuti
“We have plans to bring Pecks Road to the Philippines by establishing provenance in Melbourne
But the Lawangs say expanding is about more than just building a business
with a working-class background with parents who migrated from the Philippines in search of a better life,” says Arbi
Their parents risked it all to provide a better future for them
now the brothers are building Pecks for their family
the same way we are proud of our parents for leaving all they know to secure our future,” AJ says

Indonesia — About a dozen foreign tourists clamored around an orangutan and her young child
“Can I take a photo with her?” a tanktop-clad backpacker asked
In the orangutan’s hands was a plastic wrapper: snacks traded for the selfies
I was on the second day of a three-day trek in Bukit Lawang
a village on the fringe of Mount Leuser National Park in Indonesia
Sprawling some 2.6 million hectares across Aceh and North Sumatra provinces
the broader Leuser Ecosystem is home to the Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) and the Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) as well as the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii) — all critically endangered species
Research published this year estimates there are around 14,600 of the orangutans left
Tourism sites like Rough Guides advertise Bukit Lawang as “some of the best opportunities to see wild orangutan in the world.”
Visitors are allowed to enter the national park with a guide
And a rise in tourism in recent decades has been a boon for Bukit Lawang villagers
Most locals work as guides or in the hotels and restaurants lining the banks of the Bohorok River bordering the jungle
The village is the highest contributor to the district’s revenue
according to the local tourism association
it soon became clear that all that has come at a cost
Bukit Lawang’s tourism history began with the Bohorok Orangutan Center
two Swiss founded the rehabilitation facility for orangutans illegally kept as pets
It has since released over 200 orangutans into the wild
Tourists came to watch the orangutans at feeding platforms where the number of people was officially restricted
Bukit Lawang built 29 guesthouses — and mass tourism has only continued to rise
“Alcohol and drugs were abundant and even a ‘red light’ industry developed in what was locally known as Kampong Thailand,” he added
The Bohorok center was deemed no longer fit to rehabilitate orangutans
the forestry ministry released a directive prohibiting further releases there
the center continued releasing orangutans until 2001
and the feeding platforms only closed earlier this year
I arrived in Bukit Lawang with a friend after a four-hour van ride from Medan
With 20 years experience plying through the jungle
Firman’s knowledge of the forest is unrivalled
And he is openly critical about the state of tourism in Bukit Lawang today
he pointed us to a large board which all hikers are urged to read
That hasn’t stopped many from doing just that
black siamang (Symphalangus syndactylus) swing high up in the trees when we heard the commotion
guides were handing two orangutans fruits and packaged snacks
So now they are trained to expect it,” Firman said
adding that some orangutans have become hostile unless placated with something to eat
Wildlife conservationists have raised alarm over the situation in Bukit Lawang
Sumatran Orangutan Society director Helen Buckland lamented the feeding
close contact between humans and orangutans
“have led to situations that threaten the very wildlife that visitors travel so far to see in their natural habitat.”
Yet hundreds of tourists relish such interactions: Bukit Lawang consistently gets a 5-star rating on sites like TripAdvisor
“The outing went far beyond our expectations,” one reviewer wrote on TripAdvisor
Another reviewer wrote
The head of the local tour guides association
admits that the blatant contact with orangutans is troubling
but says his organization can only do so much
“There’s no specific regulation so we can’t say they violated the law
Bahagia said the guides feel their hands are tied
“Not all the tourists who come care about biology or the environment
Some of them only want to see orangutans — that’s it,” Bahagia said
Currently there are around 500 guides registered in Bukit Lawang
was part of the older generation trained through a program under the government and the guides association
You simply become a guide by “experience,” Bahagia explained
He says this came out of necessity as the number of tourists kept increasing
“The older generation has less stamina now so we’re building the new generation,” he said
the forest is effectively left in the hands of those young men
Orangutans continue to face the threat of extinction
experts emphasize that drastic changes need to take place to safeguard the fragile population
“All orangutans that potentially have direct contact with wild orangutans should be completely, physically isolated from visitors to minimize the risks of disease transmission to the wild population,” the SOCP’s Singleton wrote.
“It is strongly recommended to begin concentrating tourism on Bukit Lawang’s other, non-orangutan assets, such as the forests themselves and other species, and begin to rely less on the ex-captive orangutans.”
The SOS’s Buckland added that, done properly, ecotourism has the potential to protect orangutans and their habitat.
“More training and awareness for guides and tourism professionals depending on biodiversity and nature, a better control of tourism practices and actors by relevant authorities, and a true and shared involvement of tourists and travel operators are still necessary,” she said.
After returning to the village at the end of our trek, Firman agreed that while tourism has helped the community, the forest and its orangutans have suffered.
“Bukit Lawang these days isn’t suitable for visiting anymore from a conservation perspective,” he said.
He wants to start a new ecotourism initiative away from orangutans, with treks focused on learning about the forest’s biodiversity. But as long as the orangutans keep bringing in cash, he’s not sure things will change.
“The local community worships money now, so whatever tourists want, they will do it,” Firman said. “Even if it violates conservation guidelines.”
The “fortress conservation” model is under pressure in East Africa, as protected areas become battlegrounds over history, human rights, and global efforts to halt biodiversity loss. Mongabay’s Special Issue goes beyond the region’s world-renowned safaris to examine how rural communities and governments are reckoning with conservation’s colonial origins, and trying to forge a path forward […]

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): The 215th Maiwand Military Corps alleged on Friday fighting in southern Helmand province was dragging on due to brazen interference from a neighbouring country and joblessness
Dadan Lawang claimed: “There is a visible presence of the neighbouring country’s intelligence agents here
We have tasked some departments to share input to counter their nefarious designs.”
In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News
he said militants were unable to enter face-to-face combat with security forces
the insurgents have resorted to planting roadside bombs
He said a comprehensive strategy had been chalked out to beat militant tactics in northern districts of the province but he stopped short of disclosing details of the plan
The fighting had intensified because of interference from a foreign intelligence network — a not-so-veiled reference to Pakistan
The spy service was exploiting jobless youth to take up arms against their own country
Referring to poppy cultivation in the province
the outspoken general said growing the illicit crop was a huge challenge for them
Another security problem was illegal mines business
which continued unabated in southern districts
The general is meeting different departmental heads to build close coordination
I have asked my staff to tell me without hesitation if they need extra facilities to improve security,” the commander continued
He ruled out the presence of ISIS, Haqqani network or al-Qaeda in Helmand
but said that interference by the neighbouring country was a matter of concern to him

It seems England’s recent decisions have set an interspecies precedent. This morning, at Cheshire, England’s Chester Zoo, four Sumatran orangutans—Subis, Tuti, Siska, and Indah—made their own exit attempt. After escaping their enclosure, they wandered into the surrounding building, known as the Monsoon Forest, according to the Chester Chronicle
Meanwhile, the Duke of Westminster, a Cheshire local, was visiting the zoo. The Duke was “obviously not involved in the incident,” a zoo spokesperson told the Chronicle
But a closer look at their natural histories suggests a suspicious amount of overlap

The Duke of Westminster, common name Gerald Grosvenor, is known for owning a lot of land and being extremely wealthy. In the wild, he is threatened by England’s recent secession from the European Union
which also shrunk his home range significantly
Perhaps the orangutan coalition had hoped to diplomatically commiserate with the Duke
they were returned to their enclosure before they got the chance to do much of anything
“Orangutans are extremely curious animals and were being rascals about returning,” he said
“but they’re all now back safe and sound.”

The sheer weight of numbers loads pressure on jungle guides to deliver sightings of the animals to the hordes of tourists who travel to the remote destination
There are two ways to catch a glimpse of the endangered tree-dwellers
Bukit Lawang guides will escort groups on a 15-minute walk to a platform at the jungle edge
loaded with clumps of bananas and a bucket of milk
clamber onto the wooden platform and knock it to alert the animals that afternoon tea has arrived
one or more is more than likely to swing down from the forest canopy for a meal
a delivery of favourite food is difficult to resist
They know that around mid-afternoon every day a feed awaits them on the wooden platform
Visitors kept back a safe 10 metres can click away with their cameras and record the encounter
On the day we visited a solitary animal swooped down from the towering forest trees and spent perhaps 10 minutes slurping from a coconut bowl and devouring bananas
it grabbed a bunch and clasped the fruit under an arm as it skilfully climbed back to the tree tops
The other way to see the animals is by joining a two or three-day jungle trek
is where trouble can arise because tourists who have paid upwards of $200 expect something back on their investment

The New Zealand tourist attacked by an orangutan has described the moment he felt the ape's teeth tightening around his knee as he desperately kicked at it with his free leg
who has returned home after cutting his three-week Indonesian trip short
told the Herald last night that the "frightening" incident had left him with three big puncture marks in his leg
as well as superficial scratches and deep bruising
The 27-year-old junior doctor - who moved to Melbourne two years ago after finishing medical school in Auckland - he was bitten by the ape during a two-day jungle trek through Gunung Leuser National Park
Home to the Sumatra Orangutan Observation Centre
the park supports rehabilitated orangutans
many of which are victims of the illegal pet trade or orphaned due to logging
READ MORE: Orang-utan attack: Animal's mood hard to predict
Mr Wickramarachchi's group of hikers saw a female orangutan and her baby come down from trees about 20 m in front of them
The group slowly moved away from the animal to get out of its way
All the other ones that had approached us previously
when we moved away they would just keep going on their way," he said
But the ape continued to move towards the group
"They're quite big animals and they have long arms and legs
I think it was about a metre away when it just reached over and grabbed my leg." Mr Wickramarachchi said the female orangutan was fully grown
"So I couldn't really get away and then it just bit me..
kind of clamped on and then I felt it tightening and tightening and that was when I started struggling - when it started hurting."
Mr Wickramarachchi fell to the ground and attempted to kick it with his other leg
but it was not until a guide hit the orangutan from behind
"We all started running and it followed us for a little while
The group had to hike for three and a half hours in rain over steep hills to the nearest campsite for medical attention
He then had to wade chest deep across a river to a raft
which carried the group downstream to the village of Bukit Lawang
From there he had a three hour drive to the city of Medan
where he received a rabies vaccination at Columbia Asia Hospital
He got his wounds cleaned and left the hospital a few hours later
Wanting to be in a reliable place in case the bite got infected
After having additional vaccines and a check up with doctors here
Mr Wickramarachchi said his wounds were healing well
"In more ways than one I put myself there and I was very unlucky
I really hope nothing happens to it because of this."

Conservationists identify 11 hotspots that could sustain 80% of protected global forest losses over the next two decades
Hundreds of millions of acres of forest could be lost in the next two decades in less than a dozen global hotspots for deforestation
Research by wildlife charity WWF has identified 11 “deforestation fronts” where 80% of projected global forest losses by 2030 could occur
Up to 170m hectares (420m acres) could be lost between 2010 and 2030 in these areas if current trends continued – equivalent to the disappearance of a forest stretching across Germany
which are at sustained and increased risk of deforestation
are home to indigenous communities that depend on them for their livelihoods and endangered species
But they are being lost to expanding agriculture, including livestock farming, palm oil plantations and soy production, as well as small-scale farmers, WWF’s latest Living Forests report warned
Unsustainable logging and wood fuel collection is also causing forest degradation – while mining
construction of hydroelectric dams and other projects cause roads to be built that open new areas of forest to settlers and agriculture
The conservation group is calling for action including expanding and strengthening protected areas
recognising the benefits forests provide and boosting schemes which provide incentives to countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation
WWF-UK is campaigning to close European Union loopholes which mean that products such as furniture
which have been made from illegally or unsustainably sourced wood
said: “Imagine a forest stretching across Germany
Spain and Portugal wiped out in just 20 years
“We must tackle that risk to save the communities and cultures that depend on forests
and ensure forests continue to store carbon
supply wood and provide habitat for millions of species.”
View image in fullscreenDeforestation hotspots around the world
2010-2030 Photograph: WWFWWF analysis shows that more than 230m hectares (570m acres) of forest could vanish by 2050 if no action is taken
with the organisation warning that forest loss must be reduced to near zero by 2020 to avoid dangerous climate change and economic losses
said: “Deforestation needs to stop if we are to reverse biodiversity loss and combat climate change - which
“Managing forests sustainably could underpin sustainable development
poverty alleviation and a stable climate around the world.”
He added: “Here in the UK you can still buy furniture
cards and other products made from illegally or unsustainably sourced wood
EU rules to prevent the exploitation of forests only cover half of traded products
“The next UK government should lobby hard to end this nonsense.”

Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans are comfortably placed
With only 15 matches to go in the league stage of this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL 2025)
seven teams are still in contention to make it to the playoffs
but no team has secured a place in the top four yet
here’s what each of these seven teams needs to do to qualify
have 16 points and has three matches still to play
The washout between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Delhi Capitals (DC) means that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are now only one win away from securing their place in the playoffs
That’s because five teams can make it to 18 points only if at least a couple of teams get there due to two washouts
Since the number of wins is the first tie-breaker for teams on equal points
RCB will go through on the basis of nine wins
They can also make the top four with 16 points if other results go their way
two wins will not guarantee a top-two finish yet
as three teams can still finish with 20 or more points
The still have three matches to play – against Delhi Capitals
Punjab Kings (PBKS) need to win a couple of games and move up to 19 points
If they win each of their three remaining games
they’ll be assured of a top-two finish
Two of their three remaining games are against teams in the top five
which makes those results extremely vital for PBKS
MI have so far also played 11 matches and are sitting with 14 points
They also still have three matches to play – against Gujarat Titans
Mumbai Indians (MI) are undoubtedly the form team of the tournament at the moment
Not only have they won six consecutive matches
they have done so by convincing margins – four of those victories have been by either 50-plus runs or by more than 25 balls to spare
That has helped lift their NRR to an enviable 1.274
A couple of wins will guarantee a place in the playoffs
while 20 will likely ensure a top-two finish given their excellent NRR
several other results will need to go in their favour
since their three remaining games are against sides that are all in contention
Three defeats will take all those teams above MI
The Titans have played only 10 matches so far and are sitting with 14 points
They have four matches still to play – against MI
They have an excellent NRR of 0.867 – which is second only to MI’s
Gujarat Titans also need at least a win to stay in contention
while two wins will guarantee qualification
they will be eliminated if they lose each of their four remaining games and stay on 14
with their last two games scheduled at home
where they have a formidable 4-1 record so far this season
Delhi Capitals have played 11 matches so far and have 13 points
They have three matches still to play – against PBKS
A lucky point against SRH halted a two-match losing sequence for DC and gave them a bit of a breather
Fifteen points will push them into the top four only if several other results go in their favour
while 17 could also place them at the mercy of other results – it’s still possible for six teams to finish on 17 or more points
Wins in all three remaining matches will ensure qualification
but that will require a huge reversal of form
given that they have only won one of their last five matches
KKR has also played 11 matches and have three to go
Their three remaining matches are against CSK
Fifteen points could give Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) an outside chance based on other results
they’ll need 17 to stay in contention
it could come down to other results and net run rates
LSG have 11 matches ticked off and have 10 points in total
They still need to play three matches – against RCB
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are also struggling for momentum
The best they can do now is win their three remaining matches
and hope that a couple of in-form teams suffer a sudden reversal of fortunes
will see Match 56 play out at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai when Mumbai Indians will take on Gujarat Titans
The match starts at 5:30 pm Kabul time and will be broadcast live and exclusively on Ariana Television across Afghanistan
This comes after Khalis’ meeting last week with Kazakhstan’s Chargé d’Affaires
where he also called for Afghanistan to be included in the year’s summit
In a bid to garner support for Afghanistan’s inclusion in this year’s climate change summit
the head of the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA)
this week met with Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Kabul Ilham Mammadov
Khalis noted Azerbaijan had successfully hosted COP29 last year and urged Azerbaijan to support Afghanistan’s wish to actively participate in COP30
The two officials discussed the impact of climate change on their shared geographic area and Khalis emphasised the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation in the field of environmental protection
highlighted the importance of including Afghanistan in global climate processes and underscored the country’s vulnerability to climate change
He noted the devastating impact of recent floods in Afghanistan and added that Azerbaijan is ready to share its expertise in renewable energy as it gradually phases out the use of fossil fuels
Highlighting shared challenges and commonalities between Afghanistan and Kazakhstan
Khalis called for enhanced bilateral cooperation in areas such as climate adaptation
the resumption of stalled environmental projects in Afghanistan
“Kazakhstan has valuable experience in these fields,” Khalis said
“We can greatly benefit from their expertise in responding to climate change.”
despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions
is among the countries most severely affected by climate change
Khalis stressed that Afghan voices must be included in global climate discussions
Chargé d’Affaires Akbasov reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s support for Afghanistan
saying: “Our mission is to assist Afghanistan in humanitarian and infrastructure development
We will strive to ensure Afghan voices are heard at international forums because climate change and environmental challenges are shared across the region and require collective action.”
Afghanistan was invited as an observer to COP29
marking the first time the Islamic Emirate attended a climate summit since they regained power in 2021
The IEA government has been actively seeking to participate in COP summits
arguing that their political isolation shouldn’t prevent them from engaging in international climate discussions
Many refugees who have returned from Pakistan have had to leave mostly everything behind
More than 250,000 Afghan refugees returned home from neighboring Pakistan and Iran in April
the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported late Sunday
who face an uncertain future with restrictions on education
safe and dignified,” the UNHCR said in a post on X
Nearly seven million Afghan refugees are living outside the country – a large percentage of whom live in Pakistan and Iran
the Pakistani government said it would expel as many as three million Afghans this year
Iran have also called on undocumented Afghans living in the country to return home
with the high levels of poverty and unemployment in Afghanistan
the returning refugees are in urgent need of assistance
Transit camps have been set up at the border crossings to accommodate the return refugees
have been striving to ease the return of the refugees as much as possible
funding cuts in humanitarian assistance has had a huge impact on the level of assistance that organizations can provide
the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) warned that an even deeper humanitarian crisis is looming in Afghanistan as tens of thousands of Afghan refugees return from neighbouring countries
UNHCR spokesperson Babar Baloch said that the agency urgently needs $71 million to assist those arriving home
Baloch said these refugees face desperate conditions once in the country
more than 251,000 Afghans returned in adverse circumstances from Iran and Pakistan
He said the UNHCR continues to advocate with the governments of Iran and Pakistan that returns to Afghanistan must be voluntary
“Forcing or putting pressure on Afghans to return is unsustainable and could destabilize the region,” he said
“While UNHCR recognizes the many challenges – including economic pressures – facing these countries that have hosted millions of Afghans for decades
we have also consistently shared our concerns that regardless of their legal status
people forced to return to Afghanistan may encounter serious protection risks,” Baloch said
more than 3.4 million Afghans have returned or been deported from Iran and Pakistan
The UNHCR said such mass returns have strained the capacity of many provinces in Afghanistan and exacerbated the risk of further internal displacement
The organization also warned that there has been new displacement into Iran and Pakistan
and heightened risks of onward movements towards Europe
Afghans became the largest group (41 percent) of irregular arrivals from the Asia-Pacific region into Europe

The character reveals that he would have opted to complete the delivery by himself but Fatimah argues with him on every visit
he requires players' help to complete the arrangement

when Lawang asks you to drink one of the potions to prove that they work
press and hold L1 and highlight the Invisibility Potion
but you don’t have to hold it this time
All that’s left to do is to wait for the effects to wear off
