May 05, 2025 at 5:00 pm CDTIt’s Monday evening, and a lovely one at that. The mercury on our thermometer has crept up to 80 degrees. The laundry dried really fast, so it didn’t matter that I did other jobs around the house before I started with laundry.
Now I want to share what our weeks ahead will be like. Yesterday, daughter Verena and Daniel Ray were “published” to be married June 20. For the readers who wonder what published means, I will explain. When a couple plans to get married, it is kept a secret from everyone except family and close friends. About six to eight weeks before their wedding date, the bishop announces the wedding date to the whole church. This is said right before church services are over.
Usually, families from both the bride and groom attend the service to be there to share the joy of the couple’s announcement. This is always an exciting day for the couple, and also a relief that they can freely talk about their wedding day to anyone.
Often, the “secret” slips out somehow, and some people find out about the upcoming wedding. Most often, if it does, they will be kind enough not to spread it further. My daughters never really cared if it wasn’t a “surprise” to everyone.
One of our local community stores has a calendar hung in the back of the store so couples planning to get married in our community can put a sticker on the day they choose. This helps from not having two weddings on the same day.
When daughter Loretta and Dustin were married, daughter Elizabeth and Tim had a nephew who married the day before their wedding. This made a very busy week for them with a wedding on each side of their family. They made it work, though.
Verena and Daniel will be married in Dustin and Loretta’s pole barn, and the reception will be held here. This is our fifth and last daughter getting married. It will be so different for me not to have a daughter in the house anymore. Verena isn’t going far, though. We will put a wall through the pole barn and make living quarters in there for the newlyweds.
Verena will still go over and help Loretta every day with the children while Dustin’s at work. I am glad she will be just a hop and skip out of our door for now. Daniel Ray is a great addition to our family. He’s always helpful around here and a great friend to Verena. I wish this couple many happy years together.
Daniel Ray is the first of his siblings to leave home and get married, so this will be a great adjustment for their family. I remember when our first one left the house and how different it was for us. The house seemed so empty with one less person.
The garage sale for sister Verena was a success last week, and we also barbecued 400 pounds of chicken for donation toward son Kevin’s handicapped buggy. We sold out on the chicken, which we were very happy with. We appreciate everyone who helped support this. Kevin will be so happy once he can leave without having to be lifted all the time.
Tomorrow afternoon is the public auction at my sister-in-law Sarah Irene’s place. She is selling a lot of my brother Albert’s farm equipment and downsizing in her house. We never thought Albert’s life would be over so soon. May 22 will be a year since he lost his eight-week battle with colon cancer. Having lost three siblings all at young ages really makes you appreciate every day God gives you. Rest in peace, dear brothers and sisters. May we all meet again someday.
We are enjoying our first meals of asparagus. Rhubarb also is out there, ready and waiting for me to make a rhubarb custard pie. I want to can rhubarb juice in the next few weeks.
Homemade asparagus soup (Lovina's Amish Kitchen)
Combine the broth, potatoes, onions and salt in a large saucepan. Cook over medium heat until the vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. Add the asparagus and cook for 10 more minutes. Whisk the milk and flour together well in a small bowl, then whisk into soup. Stir in the cheese until melted. Can be served immediately or cooled and refrigerated to eat later. If desired, garnish with crumbled bacon.
It's a cool April evening with a temperature of 53 degrees. The wind makes it feel colder than that though. I washed clothes and they dried on the lines. It was a challenge trying to keep the clothes on the lines with the wind. Daughter Verena had a doctor appointment this afternoon. She needed someone to go with her to load and unload her mobility scooter, so I went with her.
This will be a busy week with the garage sale for sister Verena being held here this Saturday, April 26th. The pole barn is packed with many useful items. Plans are to have a barbeque chicken benefit drive the same day. Proceeds will go towards a handicap accessible buggy for son Kevin, 19.
We only have son Benjamin here to lift Kevin into the buggy when we want to leave. Sometimes Benjamin has other plans and then Kevin doesn’t have a way to leave. The handicap accessible buggy will have a lift like daughter Loretta and Dustin’s buggy has. This will make it possible for anyone to take him to church or wherever we need to go. Kevin is over 6 feet tall so it’s not an easy task to lift him into a buggy. It will make it easier on him too.
The grass is lush green now and rhubarb, asparagus, tulips, and other spring dandies are popping up everywhere. I love this time of the year.
On Good Friday we had a very nice day. Our whole family of twenty-nine came for the day. It was precious and we made more memories. I love cooking for the whole family. Joe and the men grilled twenty-five pounds of chicken. Besides that, the menu consisted of mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, lettuce salad, deviled eggs, colored hard-boiled eggs, cheese, hot peppers, celery, carrot sticks, onions, and dessert was ice cream, brownies, cookies, zucchini bread, and jello.
The eggs were colored by Denzel and Byron. This was their first attempt at coloring eggs. I’m sure their parents have more than one story they could tell from that experience. Haha! After lunch the candy filled eggs were hidden around the yard. The children closed all the curtains so they wouldn’t be tempted to peek where the eggs were being hidden. We gave them Easter baskets I made for them, so they were entertained while the eggs were being hidden.
Then the fun began, turning thirteen children loose to go look for eggs. Well three-month-old Kylie needed help yet. Smile. They were all happy for what they got. How precious when you hear the little children tell each other what Easter stands for in their sweet innocence.
I hope your Easter was blessed! May God bless you every day!

Lovina will have a book signing at Kankakee Public Library, 201 E Merchant St, Kankakee, IL on May 2 from 3 to 5 p.m. CDT and at Shipshewana on the Road, Lake County Fairgrounds 4H Building, 889 S. Court St., Crown Point, IN on May 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. CDT.
Jakarta. Lovina Beach Brewery, a Bali-based craft beer producer, has announced plans to go public through an initial public offering (IPO). The company, which touts itself as Indonesia's sole craft beer producer, intends to issue 1.18 billion shares to the public at an initial price of Rp 100 per share.
The primary goal of this IPO is to secure fresh capital amounting to Rp 140 billion ($9.1 million), which Lovina Beach Brewery aims to utilize for expanding its operations.
As of now, the company's ownership is divided among several shareholders, including Barito Mas Sukses (85.74 percent), Christopher Sumasto Tjia (0.63 percent), Felicia Mega SD (3.14 percent), Suhendra Widjaja (3.67 percent), Fanny Setiadi Faizal (3.41 percent), and Constantius Kadarisman (3.41 percent).
Jakarta-born Christopher, 49, has been identified as the ultimate beneficial owner of Lovina Beach Brewery.
The IPO is scheduled to take place from October 3 to October 6, with Artha Sekuritas serving as the underwriter.
In the first quarter of this year, Lovina Beach Brewery reported a net revenue of Rp 10.8 billion, marking a remarkable year-on-year increase of 183.45 percent. This surge in revenue coincided with the return of tourists to Bali and a swift recovery in business following the pandemic.
Additionally, the company recorded a net profit of Rp 19.49 billion during the same period, a significant turnaround from the Rp 638.22 million loss reported in the first quarter of the previous year.
Lovina is the producer of the local beer brand Stark.
It's Monday morning, and my week looks extra busy.
I will try not to let it bring me any stress, though, and take one day at a time. Life is precious, and we need to treasure every day. It can change so quickly, and we never know who will not be here to see when tomorrow comes. We do not know what the future holds, but we do know "who" holds it.
Easter is always a reminder that hope should never be lost, for as dark as the road may seem, there is always light at the end of it. May all your prayers be answered and my wish to you and your loved ones is that God will shower you with his many blessings. Have a blessed Easter!
Lovina will have a book signing from 3-5 p.m. on May 2, at Kankakee Public Library, 201 E Merchant St, Kankakee, Illinois, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 3, at Shipshewana on the Road, Lake County Fairgrounds 4H Building, 889 S Court St, Crown Point, Indiana.
Cook chicken in a skillet until done. In a large casserole dish, place frozen tater tots on the bottom. Place chicken on top. In a small pan to make gravy, melt butter and then gradually add flour and milk until it slightly thickens. Stir in the ranch seasoning and pour over the chicken. Crumble bacon and sprinkle over gravy. Top with shredded cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

a thank you to all of you readers that attended my book signing at the Plain and Simple Craft in Shipshewana
It's always an encouragement to meet and talk to readers and hear all the kind words
Sometimes I feel like time is so limited with being a mother and also grandmother to 13 precious grandchildren
It makes my time worth it all when I hear the encouragement
It saddens me to hear of others that have never experienced the family life I do
I was very surprised to have Uncle Melvin (my dad's brother) and Aunt Kathryn come to visit awhile at the signing
It is always a good feeling to visit with your deceased parent's siblings
the memories are all you have and you treasure them even more
Wednesday I had a short but sweet visit from my oldest sibling
With everyone's Christmas card to family and neighbors
I sent along a slip of paper with a week out of the year to have them do something special for sister Verena
a visit or whatever they wanted to do in the week they were sent
Verena has many lonely days living alone and her health not permitting her to work
I thought this would be a way of cheering her up
so she hired a driver and drove the 2 hours to Michigan
she picked up sister Emma and took her and Verena out to eat in town
Verena then stayed at Emma's house for a few days
She sometimes spends a few days at Emma's or here to help pass time
Plans are to move sister Susan's belongings over here to our pole barn on Friday evening
Sister Emma's family and our family plan to all help
Susan had accumulated lots of things in her 44 years
Susan has been gone over four years now and Verena wanted this done sooner but is just not able to
It's never easy parting with a dear one's personal property
our church is having a farewell supper in honor of our deacon Sylvan and Martha and family
They are packing up and moving to Montana to make it their new home
We moved two hours from our home to our home in Michigan in 2004
but I did find out home is where the heart is
Daughter Elizabeth and Tim have finally been able to move out of their house and into their garage
This will be their temporary home while they tear down their toxic mold-infested home and build a new one
but experts say it was already started with mold between the walls when Tim bought it before their marriage
This was a great disappointment to them and also expensive as they were advised to dispose of a lot of their belongings that can't be treated for mold
They have had a lot of sickness due to living in the house with mold
We hope life will start looking brighter for them and good health returns
Elizabeth said it's not easy going from a three-story house to a small garage and finding room for everything with a family
The dandelion greens are up everywhere and my husband
keeps reminding me that we haven't had dandelion salad yet and before we know it
the yellow flowers will be popping up making the greens too bitter to use
We love the dandelion salad on top of steamed potatoes along with fresh bacon or ham
½ cup whipped salad dressing or mayonnaise
Place the eggs and dandelion greens in a large bowl and pour the dressing over them
Dressing: Combine whipped salad dressing or mayonnaise with vinegar and mix well then add milk and salt
I use a shaker bottle to make dressing or a quart jar
Any unused dressing can be stored in the refrigerator for a week or more
Variation: Substitute in season fresh from the garden lettuce or endive or spinach for the dandelion greens
and the temperature is in the upper twenties
we moved from our Indiana home to our home here in Michigan
It was cold with snow on the ground that year (2004)
It doesn't seem possible that it has been that many years ago
Daughter Lovina was born three and a half weeks early and arrived before we were all unpacked
Son Kevin was born the next year completing our family of eight children
Life has brought many changes during those years
We are touching up on our cleaning in preparation to host church services here Sunday which will be for daughter Loretta and Dustin's turn
so we don't have to host it again later this year
With baby Kylie only being eleven weeks old we offered Dustin and Loretta to take their turn here this time
On March 16 we invited family and neighbors back for the evening meal
and a variety of desserts and pies plus ice cream
nephew Ben and Crystal hosted church in their district
Our church divided with theirs last fall due to the size
This was the first time we visited their district since
Son Joseph and Grace are in another church district but also attended as did Loretta and Dustin
It was so nice to have the whole family there
this grandma was very happy to have all her grandchildren there and some of them sat with her during the services
Ben and Crystal have living quarters in the pole barn at sister Emma's place
Brother-in-law Jacob is still missed on a day like that
He always loved passing out candy to the children
We spent the afternoon at Lovina and Daniel's house and enjoyed popcorn and other snacks
Joseph and Grace assisted Elizabeth and Tim on Saturday with their work and spent the night there so they could attend church on Sunday
Last week Susan left her three youngest sons here while she went to a doctor appointment
Ryan was telling me his name is Ryan Isaiah Bontrager then Curtis said his name is Curtis Dale Yoder
and Ryan asked her if she is a Bontrager too
"A call blast?" We had a good laugh over that
You could never tell that those two little boys were not biological brothers
They were both the youngest when they lost a parent
God has a plan for our life although we don't always understand it
May he always keep his protecting hand over these sweet little ones
The two little boys kept entertained playing Uno and Cover Your Assets
I'm not so sure they knew how to play the last game
but I think they might have been making up the rules as they went
walked around finding his own entertainment
I plan to be at the Plain and Simple Craft Show
I hope to see you all there if you can come
Shipshewana (in the Shipshewana auction building)
We received a wedding invitation to Devon and Karen's wedding on May 8

My husband Joe and son Benjamin have both left for work
I have lots and lots of laundry to wash today so I thought I had better get this column done first thing this morning
Yesterday Joe and I attended the funeral of his uncle Dave
Dave was never married but left behind four sisters
Two of his sisters are close to and over 90 years old
Everyone seemed to have a story to say about Uncle Davy
The funeral was held at Joe's aunt Mattie's and cousin Martin's place
Mattie is my brother-in-law Jacob's mother and Martin is his brother
Joe and I traveled the 2 hours with sister Emma
He is so adorable and has the sweetest smile
Sister Emma greatly misses her husband when she visits his home place and family
We visited with some of Joe's family and cousins he doesn't often see after the funeral
We also visited with my sister Liz and Levi
They seem to be adjusting well in the new community they moved to
sister-in-law Sarah Irene and I attended the funeral of dear cousin Sovilla
three daughters and their husbands and eight grandchildren
We heard later that her ninth grandchild was born the afternoon of Sovilla's funeral
Also surviving is Sovilla's mother (Aunt Emma)
Sovilla will be greatly missed by all who knew her
She was a close cousin to me and was a very kind-hearted person
Our sympathy goes out to the family as they mourn the loss of a very dear loved one
May God keep his loving arms around them and help them through this trial
Sarah Irene and Emma are both widows and know the pain of losing a dear partner
We don't always understand why things happen but let us trust in him
March 30 Council services were held here with daughter Loretta and Dustin hosting it
Council services are longer than a regular church service so around lunch time we serve lunch to everyone
Lunch was served here in the house and church services were in the pole barn
I must say I was quite relieved that it was over
I am glad to take our turn but after having it held here three times in March
Council meeting is preparatory services for communion which will be held at our neighbors in two weeks
March was a full month for us with hosting church here three times
Next on our agenda is to bring sister Susan's belongings over here to the pole barn and have a garage sale
It will be sad to see all her earthly belongings being sold but we can't change God's plan
Susan has so many nice things she collected over her short stay of 44 years on this earth
Dustin and Loretta have their own chickens
so it wasn't as bad to use seven dozen eggs to make it
I'm so glad our daughters share their eggs with us
peeled and chopped2 cups whipped salad dressing2 cups mayonnaiseSeason to taste with your choice of seasoningIn a large bowl mix hot dogs and eggs
Then stir in salad dressing and mayonnaise
Note: Ham can be substituted in place of hot dogs
and I am an Old Order Amish writer and cookbook author (yes
we really do get around by horse and buggy and aren’t connected to electricity!) I was born on May 22
to very dear parents Ben and Elizabeth Coblentz
along with my five sisters and two brothers
They have left me a legacy of great memories I will always treasure
I was a young girl at home when my mother started penning the “Amish Cook” newspaper column in 1991
She wrote that column until her sudden death in 2002
The column is now called “Lovina’s Amish Kitchen.” The past columns written by my mother
Sometimes I read through them and see things I wrote about the children that I would have otherwise forgotten
Our children like to read through them sometimes
I have been married for almost 32 years to my husband
We feel blessed to be parents to eight sweet
Mose died from injuries in an automobile accident on his way to work with his driver
This was a very tragic time for our family
and we will always have fond memories of dear Mose
who had three children with his first wife
She died from breast cancer three months before Mose died
Ervin was left to mourn with three children
but the couple found comfort in each other
and they have become a very well-blended family
Joe and I moved to southeastern Michigan from our Indiana home
We are now members of the Old Order Amish church here in Michigan
We want to live our lives honoring God for sending Jesus Christ as our savior
We hosted church services at our home three times in March
Each family takes a turn hosting church services and will furnish the lunch
I ended up with three turns because I switched with someone
and Loretta and Dustin used our pole barn to host their turn
with each district having 20 to 25 families
A new bench wagon is made for the new church
The wagon has all the dishes in it to serve the church luncheon
I hope you will continue to enjoy my weekly column in your newspaper
I will share a recipe each week with my column
and my husband Joe keeps reminding me that we haven’t had dandelion salad yet
We love the dandelion salad on top of steamed potatoes
Spring Dandelion Salad (Lovina's Amish Kitchen)
Dressing: Combine whipped salad dressing or mayonnaise with vinegar and mix well
I use a shaker bottle or a quart jar to make the dressing
Variation: Substitute in-season fresh-from-the-garden lettuce or endive or spinach for the dandelion greens

It is warm weather for February with the temperature at 38 degrees
now our yard is exposed and needs to be cleaned up a little before Sunday
we couldn't see the leaves that were never raked up
all the bones and treasures our dog drags up and stores all over our yard
Hopefully we can get the outside cleanup done while it's warm
I'm sure we have only a few days before the cold is back
but we need to stay patient a little while longer
We have only five days left to get done what needs to be done before we host church services here
I am checking prices on ham to serve with lunch Sunday
I shouldn't be surprised with everything else going up in price
I am going to use niece Verena's peanut butter spread recipe this time
I am not usually one to eat peanut butter spread but I loved the one she served when they hosted church
I will share the recipe with you this week
It is a big amount so you might need to cut it down
She said she would use only half of this amount for a regular size church
She also said this spread freezes well for up to a year
Sunday our whole family attended church in Daniel Ray's (Daughter Verena's special friend) church district
Daniel Ray was baptized and accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour
May God bless him as we travel into the unknown future
We appreciate all the help we get from Daniel Ray
He's always willing to help out around here
I sure appreciate that Daniel Ray's mother sewed Verena a new black dress suit for Sunday
She needed one for baptismal services and I was so busy that I didn't have time to sew it
My husband Joe has a very painful back for quite a while and the doctor ordered an MRI
The results are back now and they want him to see a spine neurologist
I am really hopeful they can help him be pain free once again
He has pain walking but gets relief when he sits
He can't do much after a day's work at the truss shop
We appreciate the help from our sons and son-in-laws to help with the outdoor work
but since battling with this pain for so long he can't
We sure are glad to still have son Benjamin
here at home to help with chores and he is also a great caregiver for son Kevin
It was so nice to have all the grandchildren in church Sunday
Baby Kylie Clare made her first appearance in church
She was passed around quite often and enjoyed by many
Loretta is still under doctor's care for her smaller blood clot
She was in church but unable to wear her shoes due to her leg and foot still being swollen
Tonight two bench wagons will be brought here
We need the second one since we will be hosting baptismal services which is usually a lot bigger with friends and family attending
I need to almost double all the food as well so we have plenty for all the extras
I will go help daughter Loretta for a while this morning
She can't open her eye and it is very painful
She needs someone to go with her to load and unload her mobility scooter
Tim and Elizabeth will go get their sink and toilet this afternoon
they should be ready to start moving into their living quarters in the garage
kitchen and living room area and a small laundry/mud room
It's too bad that they have to tear down the house due to mold
The advice received from several professionals was that this will be better for their family’s health so they knew they had to do it
Mix peanut butter and butter until well combined
then gradually add maple syrup and keep mixing in until well combined
Then fold in whipped topping slowly until all is combined

Snow and ice have accumulated which made road conditions not good
This morning the mercury on our thermometer has dipped down to 2 degrees
We have been busy preparing for church services that will be held here March 2
Saturday those assisting us were son Joseph and Grace
and daughter Verena's special friend Daniel Ray
A lot was accomplished and greatly appreciated
Loretta needs to elevate her leg as often as she can
She went to her doctor for a checkup and her blood clot
She has another blood clot in a smaller vein that isn't the deep vein
The doctor put her on a third blood thinner to dissolve this one without surgery
She appreciates all the prayers and well wishes from you readers
Baby Kylie is 6 weeks old and is very good to care for
Two-year-old Denzel is doing great at potty training
He empties his potty into the "big" potty after he's done then flushes the toilet
Hopefully soon he will get the idea that he could just use the "big" potty and save himself a step
Saturday we also had a surprise visit from Joe's sisters
Susan from Indiana and Esther and David and their son Tyrel from Sugarcreek
Susan is still recovering from breast cancer surgery
We pray her cancer will stay away and she can be pain free once again
She looked so much better than last time we saw her
After leaving here they visited with my sister Verena
This was greatly appreciated as she has many lonely days
Our thoughts and prayers are also with my cousin Sovilla and her family
Sisters Verena and Emma visited her recently while in Berne
in March was when brother Albert found out he had stage 4 colon cancer
Eight weeks later he passed away from that dreadful disease
and mattress pads that aren't in the usual laundry
Daughter Susan and Ervin brought their six children here while they went to an appointment
School was canceled due to road conditions
so she wasn't prepared to have all of them along
Susan felt bad to bring them here since three of the children were sick
I told her it's okay and daughter Verena was a great nurse to them while they were here
I made an early supper of spaghetti and meatballs so they could eat before Ervin and Susan were back
I sent supper home for Ervin and Susan as well
They were surely happy that all six children had eaten already
I well remember how much that meant to me when I had young children
My to-do list is gradually getting smaller
My daughters and daughter-in-law Grace plan to come for a day later this week if health permits
Today I want to go organize the clutter so it will be easier to clean
being stored down there to make room for church services
I know we could still have church without all the cleaning done but I like the idea that you have a goal to get it all done
I know I would put it off quite often any other way
Cherry Cheese Pie9-inch graham crackers crumb crust or baked pastry shell
In a medium sized bowl mix cream cheese until fluffy and gradually mix in condensed milk until smooth
pour into the prepared crust and chill it for 3 hours or until set
Pour pie filling on top after it is chilled
May it bring much joy and happiness to you with God’s many blessings
We are excited to welcome the new year with an addition to our family
Grandchild number 13 has arrived and has won our hearts already
How much we are thankful for a safe delivery and healthy baby
Congratulations to daughter Loretta and Dustin as they welcome their first daughter to their family
Kylie Clare was born on January 4th at 8:25 p.m
She has a head full of black hair and is so adorable
I am sure she will keep up with her busy little brothers soon
Dustin and Loretta have a busy life with these three precious children
I spent three days at the hospital with Dustin and Loretta
We went up early on the morning of January 3rd (Friday)
Daughter Verena took care of Denzel and Byron while Dustin and Loretta were gone
Now I will let sister Emma write the rest of the column
May God bless her as we start another year
This letter is being written by Lovina’s sister Emma
a first for me to be writing since this column began
I decided to take the pen in my hand and try my best
since Lovina’s quality time is to be spent adoring her new granddaughter
Today we honor the epiphany (the visit of the wise men to worship the infant Jesus)
so it is like two days in a row to be resting
It has been a big blessing to have all you readers taking your time to read these columns
Even more to those who have been sending get-well wishes to son Steven
The rod and screws begin at the top of his spine and end at his buttocks
he went back to the hospital to have his tape removed
We had a handicapped van for our transportation
On the way home he was getting dizzy from sitting in his powerchair
I carried Steven from the powerchair to the front seat
This has been the only time he has left home since his surgery
daughter Elizabeth and Manuel brought sons Jacob and Steven and me sub sandwiches from a nearby restaurant
We were just done playing a game of Life on the Farm when daughter Emma
They came to feed the horses and chickens and pick up our eggs
and boys are in Pennsylvania attending a funeral for a family member
I wish that this joy of being a grandparent could be shared with dear husband Jacob
This year in August it will be four years that Jacob died
He was planning to have a liver transplant
His immune system wasn’t strong enough to fight off the infection
God didn’t promise us a life filled with roses

We are having beautiful spring weather lately
although it's really not too long before the calendar says
“spring begins.” Yesterday I took advantage of the lovely weather and washed a lot of the bedding along with the usual laundry
It dried so nice and the wind made the bath towels so fluffy for being line dried
The temperature reached sixty-five degrees
The time change made all the clocks jump an hour ahead on Sunday
so the nice weather at least helped make the change a little easier
This morning daughter Loretta and Dustin brought two-year-old Denzel
one-year-old Byron and nine and half week-old baby Kylie here around 6:30 a.m
Loretta had several appointments at doctors an hour away
so daughter Verena and I took care of the children while Dustin went with Loretta
They had to grow up fast with another child in the family
I think it's so cute how Denzel takes charge of being Byron’s babysitter while they are here
he tells him “To not do that.” He also goes up to Byron while he is taking a nap and smooths out his hair and kisses his forehead
I am so amazed that those boys do not try to pester Kylie
She’s cooing and smiling and just overall a good baby to care for
but it is all easier with daughter Verena here to help
She is a great babysitter and does so well with the children
She handles the three children better than I could
She finds ways to do things she normally couldn’t
She gets a lot of encouragement from her special friend Daniel Ray
Friday night three hogs were dressed and hung to chill for the following day
On Saturday our family all came to help with the pork butchering
Some came the night before to butcher the hogs and stay for the night
Joe and I each had a hog that Dustin raised
So began the day of the cutting up of the three pigs
Then the bones were trimmed and cooked in the big cast iron kettle over an open fire
The meat was cooked until tender enough to pull from the bones
It was then ground and put back into the kettle
and the meat was stirred until it thickened
The mixture was placed in pans and will be sliced and fried
but I know many areas call it something different
The fat was cut into small pieces and rendered in a large kettle to make lard
Once it was liquid it was strained and poured into jars to seal
We used to not put our lard into sealed jars
we just kept it in the cool basement in buckets
I found out fast that lard lasts so much longer in the jars
It can get a bad taste stored in a bucket in your basement
but I do remember the stinky smell years ago when those were cleaned

Ex-Amish influencer Lovina Hershberger detailed how she escaped from her Amish family and her 11 younger siblings with just $24
One influencer risked everything to create a new life
fled in the night in 2021 from her family’s home in Iowa
She had $24 to her name and left behind her parents and eleven younger siblings
penning a goodbye note to her family before fleeing to a nearby farm
“Something about, ‘Sorry. And I'm OK,’” Hershberger told People in an interview published Nov
"I did not tell them where I was or anything
They had no way of getting a hold of me."
she had never used a phone or the Internet before and first got the notion to leave behind her Amish lifestyle after her father forced her to quit her teaching job in favor of working on his sawmill
“The parents always decide what you do with your life until you're 21,” she explained
“and my dad told me that they're not going to allow me to be a school teacher again because it doesn't pay enough.”
"I was tired of having everybody tell me how to dress
who had previously left the Amish community
"I had $24 when I left," she said
"If it wouldn't have been for my brother
I wouldn't have made it because he bought me my phone and everything and never asked for repayment."
The learning curve entering into a non-Amish society was steep for Hershberger
mostly because she didn’t have the basic documentation necessary for employment
"Before I could get my [learner's] permit
I had to get my social security card and my birth certificate,” she said
noting her parents kept all their kids’ documentation “locked up” until they marry or turn 21
You need proof that you're a real person.”
Joseph’s future wife helped Hershberger get a job cleaning homes before she began to learn how to make and edit videos on social media

"People started asking me questions ..
and people love it," Hershberger said
I love answering questions and people love hearing my answers
So this is the way I'm going to go.'"
a man she met in a common living arrangement for those fresh out of their Amish communities
The couple tied the knot in August and though both of their families were invited to the nuptials
"It's definitely not just smooth sailing," Hershberger said of her ongoing attempts to reconnect with her family
"There's definitely something between us because of what I did
Because they think I'm dishonoring them
and they don't like the way I live my life."

I wish each of you a blessed holiday and much love and prayers to all for a wonderful 2025
May God bless you richly and may those with health problems be healed if it’s God’s will
May you put your trust in God to help you through your trials
Let us remember those less fortunate and all who have lost their dear loved ones and must go on without them
It has been four years now since we lost our dear son-in-law Mose
I am inviting our family to come for supper
I haven’t told him as I want to surprise him if I can
We will attend church services during the day at our neighbors’
That will be followed by our annual holiday potluck dinner with the church
We also have two grandchildren with birthdays close to Christmas: Timothy (T.J.) turns 6 on Dec
They are daughter Elizabeth and Tim’s sweet children
It seems so hard to believe that they are those ages already
Since I am writing this column to be published at a later date so my editors can have a break over the holidays
17) our neighbors David and Barbara are hosting a Christmas dinner for some of us couples our ages and older
Also invited are some older singles and widows and widowers
My sisters Verena and Emma will also be there
Verena has been staying at Emma’s house the past few days
Nephew Steven is still recovering from his recent surgery
Barbara said there will be Christmas carols sung for us and snacks later on
They were divided between daughter Loretta and Dustin and daughter Lovina and Daniel and us
Our freezer looks fuller now with pork and chicken done
Next will be beef but not before the holiday season
Son Joseph and Grace showed up to come help us with the chickens
I know daughter Elizabeth and Tim and daughter Susan and Ervin would have gladly helped us too if we had asked them to
They are both so busy at this time of the year though and have plenty to catch up with at home
I remember when our children were at those ages and how busy life was
It was always one or the other of the children having an eye
Not that we still aren’t busy but it’s different somehow
While the rest of us worked on the chickens
Joe butchered a deer that Daniel Ray gave to us
Joe mixed up 50 pounds of summer sausage and 25 pounds of deer jerky
We also have some steaks and venison burger in our freezer now
Do we thank our good Lord for his many blessings enough
We were tired from a long day after butchering Saturday
we played a game of “Life on the Farm,” which is always interesting to play
I was trying to teach Denzel how to play “Memory” with the Memory cards
He would say “Oh” every time I told him where the matching card was
We would lay all the cards face down on the table then Byron
thought he wanted to play and push all the cards on the floor
Those boys are so precious and are at the age where they keep Dustin and Loretta busy

Saturday our family came home for the day to assist us with our work except for daughter Loretta and Dustin
Daughter Verena and I made 50 breakfast burritos to serve for breakfast
Daughter Elizabeth brought frosted sugar cookies and doughnuts and daughter Susan brought frosted pumpkin bars
Loretta had surgery on Friday to remove a big blood clot in her left leg
She was pretty sore on Saturday so they stayed home so she could recuperate
Dustin is good at helping her and taking care of their three precious children
Baby Kylie is almost six weeks old and is very alert
She smiles a lot and has already won her grandma's heart
We sent burritos over for their breakfast since they couldn’t be here
The men worked in the new barn putting in the three remaining horse stalls
Some also worked in our old barn tearing out the old horse stalls
Eventually we plan to tear the old barn down
It is getting to be in bad shape and not worth fixing
My daughters and daughter-in-law Grace helped me in the house
They washed off the walls and ceilings in the kitchen
For lunch we made a simple meal of tacos for everyone
Son Joseph and Grace brought supper to make here for everyone in honor of her birthday which was Feb
They made a delicious meal consisting of hot wings
shrimp and mushrooms cooked in butter on the grill along with chocolate cake and ice cream
Everyone ate supper before leaving for home
and daughter Lovina and Daniel stayed for the night
I thought we accomplished a lot on Saturday
We will host church services in two and a half weeks
It will be an extra big church attendance since two young souls will be baptized
We need to clean both sides of our pole barn to make room for the extra people attending
Sunday we had a brunch consisting of fried eggs
and their children came over to eat with us
It was good for them to get out of the house for a while
Loretta kept her leg elevated a lot which was still quite sore from the surgery
The doctor told her to move it often so the blood keeps flowing
With her handicap it is harder to do when you have to sit in a mobility scooter all the time
A power chair would be much more comfortable for her which they hope to get in the future
Yesterday a lady from our church district offered to bake the cookies that I was supposed to take to church this coming Sunday
That will really help out and give me more time to clean
The women in our church take turns baking bread and cookies for each other when they host church
Recently Joe and I assisted daughter Elizbeth and Tim with their garage they are making into living quarters
It is getting closer to being finished and ready to move in
A few cute stories my daughter Elizabeth told me… Allison
“Andrea is not very strong and not fast and she can’t reach high
but that's okay cause God made her that way.” Haha
Eight-year-old Abigail wanted one kettle soup for supper one night
She couldn’t remember what the soup was called so she said
and meat in it.” After a few guesses from her Mom
“It’s that soup you never put enough salt in.” Haha
stirring constantly and pour over flour and sugar mixture
Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean
In a medium-sized bowl add 3 cups powdered sugar and set aside
Pour over the cake while the frosting is still warm
Sprinkle with your choice of nuts if desired
My alarm rings and I get up to start another day
Daughter Verena gets ready to go across the road to stay with daughter Loretta and her boys until Dustin comes home from work
I always watch at the door to make sure she gets across the road and to their house okay
Daughter Lovina gets a ride here with her husband Daniel on his way to work
She goes up to her former bedroom to get some more sleep since it’s still so early
I’m helping get some food packed for son Benjamin’s lunch
I start packing my husband Joe’s lunch and make him a sausage
I use tortilla soft shells instead of bread for the sandwich
I had plenty of leftovers from last night when the family was all here for supper for their lunches
I can tell it’s Monday and it’s hard to get started
I had a great nap and feel much more rested
I do some work at my desk − including paying bills and getting it ready for the mail
Then I gather laundry and throw it down to the basement through our “laundry shoot” (which is only a vent I take out of the floor)
Lovina is washing dishes and sweeping floors while I help son Kevin get in his mobility scooter
I wash the laundry and hang it out on the lines after eating breakfast first
Loretta brings her two little boys over here while she and Dustin leave for town
He knows where Grandpa and Grandma keep their candy
and he also knows where the Nesquik powder is
He gets the can out and stands by the refrigerator wanting milk
and he goes to the drawer and gets a small container out to put the Smarties in
Sometimes I give him some chewable vitamins instead of Smarties and he thinks it’s candy
The girls start making a potato and meat casserole
but Daniel comes to pick Lovina up before it’s done
Verena takes it over to a family from our church for their supper
Verena said the young mother was so encouraged from this
Do we realize how small acts of kindness can make someone’s day so much brighter
While Verena is gone I make another meat and potato casserole for us and one for Dustin and Loretta’s supper
I sent the rest of the soup from last night home with Lovina and Daniel
Daniel and Lovina made the campfire soup over the open fire last night while Joe and son-in-law Tim grilled 20 pounds of chicken
Our whole family came here after church services
and Joseph and Grace came for awhile after arriving home from their honeymoon
He takes Grandpa’s hand and leads him to where the Smarties are
Byron wakes up and wants Grandpa’s attention
He carries Benjamin’s lunch bucket in and opens it to see if he can find any goodies left
and Denzel collects the clothespins from me and puts them in the bag for me
She is very glad that we have supper ready for her to take home
We have leftover chicken with the casserole
Benjamin left with a friend and isn’t home yet
and I of course had fallen asleep in the recliner
I will go to bed and set the alarm again for 4 a.m
Congratulations to nephew Benjamin and Crystal
Isaiah is proud of his little baby brother
Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes
Then reduce heat to 325 degrees Fahrenheit for another 30 minutes
or until a knife comes out clean when inserted in the center

I want to write this column before I leave this morning
Daughter Loretta and I are attending the coffee break our church ladies are having for neighbor Susan
She had hip replacement surgery so this should cheer her up
Everyone always brings a lot of good food and it's nice to visit before we all go home and start our day's work
Dustin isn’t working today due to the rainy weather so he will keep a few of their children home with him
I need to wash laundry when I get back home
I have lots of clothes to wash plus lots of dish towels from Sunday
I went with my husband Joe to his appointment yesterday
I also have extra blankets to wash that we had in the nursery area for small children that take naps during the service
We had over double the amount of people we usually have at a regular service
Both sides of the pole barn had benches set up and they were filled
My guess is we had well over 300 people here
Not all of the youth stayed to eat but we still served over thirteen tables with some of us eating before so we could serve
Our menu was homemade wheat and white bread (almost 60 loaves)
cheese spread (3 batches of the recipe I’ll share
The recipe is also in “The Essential Amish Cookbook”)
peanut butter spread (it took all but a gallon of the recipe I shared last week)
so the women didn’t have to wash as many dishes
but I was glad to host it for such an important reason
Daughter Elizabeth and Tim couldn’t be here for church services on Sunday
They attended the funeral of his Aunt Mattie and Uncle Lavern ages fifty-seven and fifty-eight
They were biking home from their church ice cream supper and were almost to their driveway when they were struck by a vehicle that didn’t see them
May God help them through this difficult trial in life
here for church as they didn’t have enough room to take them along
After church services Daughter Susan and Ervin and several of their children left to go to Fort Wayne
IN to visit with Ervin’s Dad who is admitted to the hospital
Tim and Elizabeth came here after the funeral and took four of Ervin and Susan’s children home after supper
Son Joseph and Grace also joined us for supper
Joseph’s friend and coworker Thomas was baptized that day
I made spaghetti and meatballs for our family that stayed or came for supper
It was a simple and easy meal to make after a long day
This next weekend plans are to butcher pigs here
HOMEMADE CHURCH CHEESE SPREAD6 pounds process cheese spread (Velveeta or other brands of your choice)1 ½ cup butter8 cups creamPut all three ingredients in a big roasting pan and bake at 150° to 200°
stirring every 15 minutes until all is melted
Cover with plastic wrap to prevent it from getting a crusty top while cooling
The spread is served on a sandwich with or without meat
It is also good just spread on bread with some pickles
Today daughter Loretta and sons Denzel and Byron came here after my husband
Daughter Verena left last night; she went to daughter Susan and Ervin’s house
She will stay with their five oldest children today while Susan will go help prepare for Ervin’s brother Steven’s wedding
I’m still trying to get used to not having daughter Lovina home in the mornings
It seems different seeing her sit with the women in church instead of with the young girls.Denzel is snuggled up with Loretta on the loveseat
He looks tired but is looking over here watching me pen this column
He’s a sweetie though and can act so innocent when he does something wrong
Yesterday son Benjamin came home from work and buttered some bread to make himself a grilled cheese sandwich
Denzel had spotted the buttered bread and figured it would be a good snack
He loves bread with butter (and sometimes jelly)
We had to laugh about Benjamin’s disappearing bread
zucchini and a grave markerSunday church services were held at our neighbors’ house
and along with that we had mashed potatoes
It was an enjoyable afternoon and evening spent together
Everyone ate outside on our big L-shaped porch
Our zucchini is really doing well out in the garden
and we had our first meal of them stuffed with cream cheese and shredded cheese
Our sweet corn should be ready to eat soon
peas and all those garden goodies make meal planning much easier
Ervin and Susan invited our family and Mose’s family to gather at the graveyard when they put a gravestone on Mose’s grave
Mose’s parents and three of his brothers and families attended
It brought back many memories of that sad day in December 2020 when Mose lost his life due to injuries from a traffic accident on his way to work
You will always have great memories in our hearts
I invited everyone here for hot dog sandwiches and snacks afterward
and once again that big porch was used to eat on
I have been leaving the extra tables and chairs on there so when they all come home everyone has enough room to sit and eat
On warm summer days it’s also nice to feel the breeze on the porch
Joe and I went out on the lake with Dustin
Joe had off three days last week for the holiday
I have not been doing much extra work beside gardening and the daily chores since the wedding
It felt good to get extra rest after a busy few months
Here is a recipe for the pudding we served at Lovina’s wedding
6 ounces Nestlé La Lechera milk-based caramel
Whip together the milk-based caramel and whipped topping
Garnish with caramel baking chips and caramel sundae syrup
The amount of milk-based caramel can be adjusted to your preference
It is already mid-forenoon and I feel like I’m running behind
I have so much to do before Joe and I leave tomorrow
Joe’s workplace is taking their employees and their spouses and children under age 16 to Gatlinburg
It is an eight-and-a-half-hour drive from the start-out point to Gatlinburg
Joe and I have never been to the Smoky Mountains
It was our turn to host Thanksgiving dinner this year for our Michigan family
It wouldn’t have worked out for sister Emma’s family either
with Steven still pretty weak from his surgery
spent last week in the hospital after having spinal fusion surgery for scoliosis
and with Steven also having muscular dystrophy
and so does sister Emma with being his caregiver
He needs to be turned over every hour or so
Then Dustin and daughter Loretta and sons and daughter Verena and her special friend Daniel Ray also came to visit Steven
and son Benjamin spent the evening there as well
Nephew Benjamin was excited to shoot his first deer—an 8-point buck
So of course the men all stood around telling “deer” stories
Our Friday night and Saturday were busy butchering two pigs
One was for Daniel and Lovina and the other one for us
Son-in-laws Dustin and Daniel dressed the two pigs on Thursday evening since they had to work on Friday
Saturday morning they started a fire under the big kettle to cook meat from the bones so we could make pon hoss
We pick the cooked meat off the bones and put it through the grinder
The water the bones were cooked in is then measured and poured back into the kettle along with the ground meat
The mixture is then thickened with flour and seasoned with black pepper and salt
Daniel and Lovina used flour and cornmeal and different seasonings for their pon hoss
It turned out a little too spicy for my taste
Everyone has their different tastes and opinions on how to make pon hoss
but I prefer seasoning with good old salt and pepper
and it was all bagged and put in the freezer
Daniel has their bacon and ours soaking in a brine he mixed up for a few days before we slice it up
The lard was also rendered and turned out really nice and white
I am so thankful to have sausage in the freezer again
We are enjoying pon hoss and fresh sausage again
and Daniel Ray also helped with the butchering of the pigs
We were glad once the last piece was washed up and we could call it a day
let us thank God for the many blessings we have
Wishing all of you God’s blessings as well
see the story “Busy Butchering Days” in my most recent cookbook
Place pork bones in a large kettle and add enough water to cover
(We grind the meat before returning it to the broth.)
Then add 4 cups of flour for every gallon of broth
as well as 2 tablespoons salt and 1 tablespoon black pepper per gallon of broth
Fry slices on each side until golden brown

We have just enough snow on the ground to be able to say “We have snow!” The roads are probably icy though
I think we can say winter weather is here to stay
Daughter Susan is bringing her three boys here while she takes Jennifer
so Susan wanted to get an exam at an eye doctor
I remember when we had six children wearing glasses while going to school
It was a job just making sure they didn’t forget them or lose them
The others are fine without glasses for now
We had a great trip to the Smoky Mountains
Joe and I took the tram up to Ober Mountain one day
While up there we took a ride on the chairlift
but we were cold by the time we were back in our motel in Gatlinburg
But we discovered what “cold” was when we came back to Michigan
but I think the highlight of our trip was seeing a bear close to our motel when we came back one night
but to be only 20 to 30 feet away from one on the loose was exciting
Ryan and Curtis are watching me write and are asking me questions
Sweet little boys are just being typical 5-year-olds
They see that I have some gifts wrapped already and are telling me what they would like
Curtis wants a cup and a book and little toy people
The two little boys are walking around wearing Benjamin’s and Kevin’s hats
I made the boys grilled cheese for their lunch
and Jennifer is okay for now to go without glasses
I’m sure that made Susan happy to not have an added expense with the factories having a few weeks off over the holidays
I will go with Kevin to his appointment in Ann Arbor
I really hope the roads will be okay weather-wise for the two-hour drive
Joe and I plan to attend the Christmas dinner at his employer’s house
All the Metal & Truss workers will be there
We will miss not having brother Albert and Sarah Irene among the guests
They were missed on our trip to the Smokies with the other employees and their families
It will be a hard Christmas on his family without him there
Nephew Steven is slowly gaining strength and has an appointment in Ann Arbor on Thursday
Daughter Lovina and Daniel are making a “sunshine box” of items for him to enjoy
God is above all and may he give her strength to go on
Our community is saddened as a 10-year-old boy will be laid to rest on Friday
He was killed yesterday morning while biking to school with his sister and two neighbors
May God help them through this trial in life
it will be four years since our son-in-law Mose was in an accident
and Mose lived for five days although he never was conscious after the accident
We have become great friends with Dan’s wife Jodi
2 (12-ounce) packages milk chocolate chips
Cook and stir over medium-high heat until boiling
until mixture reaches 244 degrees Fahrenheit (firm ball stage)
