Jakarta - It was past midnight and several coffee shops along Jalan Kecamatan Manggar
There is nothing special with the building of the coffee shops
local people would say a visit to Belitung will not be complete without having a sip of Belitung coffee
It is often boiled using charcoal instead of gas stove
therefore it tastes better,” said 24-year-old Rizky
The coffee powder is wrapped inside fabric filter and then boiled in large pan
If a customer prefers to have some coffee grounds
The black coffee tastes bitterer and it does not spread out aromatic odor when brewed
Most of the coffee seeds sold in this area are taken from Lampung
“The culture of drinking coffee was originated by Chinese decent who worked at the tin mine
They gathered for coffee before and after working hours,” Rizky explained
having coffee at the coffee stalls have become tradition where mine workers in Manggar share stories and talk about jobs to each other
This coffee culture of Belitung people was exposed by novelist Andrea Hirata
people who do not understand the culture would think Belitung people are lazy people who spend lots of their times in coffee shops
the tin land had been conquered by the Dutch colonial
and then by Indonesian government itself through PT Timah
What’s left for Belitung people is the tin buried 20 meter deep underground
“That’s why melayu people like to hang around the coffee stalls
No friend means no force,” Andrea said
The coffee shops and coffee culture has now become tourist attraction that brings visitors to the tin land
Manggar was declared as the “Town of 1001 Coffee Stalls” after breaking the Indonesian World Museum Record (MURI) for mass coffee drinking
do not forget to have taste the town’s culture through sips of its coffee

Indonesia and Japan Deepen Strategic Alliance in Clean Energy and Infrastructure
2023 – The Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) is organizing the Energy Exploration in East Kalimantan Province in collaboration with the Clean Affordable and Secure Energy in Southeast Asia (CASE) program and the East Kalimantan Province Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Service
The main objective of this initiative is to assess the readiness of institutions and regional actors to support Indonesia’s energy transition
identify the potential and community-based innovations that emerge
and study them for replication in other areas
The East Kalimantan Energy Exploration series started with a workshop on Tuesday
the trip began by visiting the rooftop solar power plant (solar PV) of PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM)
They have been using a 100 kWp on-grid rooftop solar PV (connected to the PLN network) since 2014 to fulfill their office’s operational electricity requirements
“430 solar panels and five inverters are installed in this rooftop solar PV system
energy production from rooftop solar PV can reach 34.4 KWh
whereas the building unit’s electricity needs to reach 21 KWh
Our rooftop solar PV operates from 6.00-18.00 WITA
we have been able to reduce CO2 emissions by 861.1 tons of CO2e since the solar PV was installed,” said Responsible for Safety & Environment on Site Balikpapan Based Office
The team recently visited Balikpapan’s Manggar Final Waste Processing Site (TPAS)
They learned about the process of decomposing organic waste to produce methane gas
which can be used as a source of cooking gas for daily needs
it is stacked and compacted in certain areas and left for a while
the rotting waste will release liquid and methane gas
This methane gas can be used as an alternative energy source
“The community around the Balikpapan’s Manggar Final Waste Processing Site can utilize methane gas from this waste
and there are 300 houses with a reach of 7 km from the Manggar TPAS that have received this environmentally friendly energy source
The distribution of methane gas to residents’ homes relies on several pipes connected to gas flow dividers and separators
which reduce the water content in the methane gas,” explained the Head of the Balikpapan’s Manggar Final Waste Processing Site
The Energy Exploration in East Kalimantan field visit’s first day concluded with a visit to PT PLN Nusantara Power UP Kaltim Teluk to witness the cofiring program at the facility of Balikpapan coal-fired power plants (CFPP)
the Assistant Operations Manager for PT PLN Nusantara Power Generation Unit (Unit Pembangkitan/UP) Kaltim Balikpapan
mentioned that the CFPP facility uses a co-firing mixture of 3% wood chips or chopped wood as part of its total fuel requirement
the implementation of co-firing with chopped wood is still facing hurdles in sourcing raw materials
“To overcome wood chip supply constraints
we have made several efforts to address them
including proposing to procure a new contract with PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia
opening opportunities for testing other types of biomass
and encouraging the fulfillment of biomass supply commitments from partners who have collaborated,” explained Dhidhik

Iklan The Story of ‘Passandeq’ Challenging Stormy Waves The thrilling and ironic story was told by the ‘sandeq’ sailors in the 2022 Sandeq Festival across the Makassar Strait
The ‘passandeqs’ were always proud to set sail
Audio Berita By SUCIPTO · 4 minutes read TEKS KOMPAS/STEFANUS ATOSandeq Pangoli's boat will rest on the coast of Pambusuang Village
Paris had just finished rolling up the sail of the sandeq he was riding on
The 67-year-old man said it was his first experience navigating the Makassar Strait on a sailboat
He and seven team members navigated traditional Mandar vessels that had no engine and only relied on the wind
he and his team sailed the Makassar Strait to Balikpapan
The festival was held by the provincial government of West Sulawesi with the theme "Indonesia Supports the IKN Nusantara"
he and his team faced heavy winds and heavy rain
They wore only raincoats and life jackets for the bad weather
The steering wheel needed to be managed by several people at once so that the sail could be controlled

witnessed one of the 35 sandeq participating in the festival sinking because the mast of the boat was broken
To maintain security and provide food supplies
the sandeq boats were accompanied by 35 bodi or fishing boats with a capacity of 14 GT
the team on the fishing boat rescued the steerers before the sandeq sank
"The title of this festival is: Friends of the Waves
The passandeqs had no contact with their families while at sea
Hizbullah (19) recounted that when he saw signs of land
They were worried about our safety and crying
They were afraid of us experiencing something [dangerous] in the middle of the sea,” he said
He and seven of his friends have sailed the Makassar Strait for 7 days in the boat
which has no engine and only relies on the wind
Hezbollah sailed on a sandeq made in the 1960s which was shorter and slightly wider than the new sandeq
The ancient sandeq used a kind of woven-bamboo mat on either side of the boat to make it easier to catch fish
namely mats and roofs made of knitted coconut leaves
a type of caping (traditional hat) made of leather and bamboo leaves
"We catch fish using ancient sandeq; we can't catch too many fish
but we shouldn't be greedy,” said Abdul Kadir (58)
the passandeqs waited for the acting Governor of West Sulawesi Akmal Malik and a number of regents of West Sulawesi
The officials arrived first and stayed at a number of Balikpapan hotels
they were escorted by a boat to the sea and then boarded the sandeq to pull over to the beach together
they were greeted by the Mayor of Balikpapan
The officials from West Sulawesi were then carried on a stretcher like the Maromba Passandeq ritual
"With the presence of the acting governor of West Sulawesi and regents throughout the province
it is hoped that there will be synergy in building East Kalimantan
especially for the successful development of the Nusantara capital city," said Rahmad
Akmal Malik hopes that the Sandeq Festival
with a budget of around Rp 4 billion (US$267,488) will help preserve the cultural wealth of sandeq
"We want to be proud of Indonesia internationally -- to still have sandeq ships that only rely on wind and human power to sail," he said
We small fishermen actually sleep in the boat and on the roadside
Nasrul's waist needs a stretch due to seven days with sandeq
"The officials enjoy facilities; they sleep at the hotel
The committee did not provide lodging,” said Nasrul
He took a nap at a musholla (prayer room) on Manggar beach
passandeq sailed to several spots in Balikpapan to entertain residents
Hezbollah said goodbye and returned to West Sulawesi onboard the sandeq
He also said that he would continue his work as a fisherman in his village
"We small fishermen actually sleep in the boat and on the roadside
