The Naples Zoo has lost the king of its jungle
who was humanely euthanized following several age-related health concerns
with the average life expectancy of a male lion in the wild being 10-12 years
“Animal welfare at all stages of life is our highest priority,” said LeeAnn Rottman
and the many guests who visited him over the years.”
Masamba had been under close veterinary care
receiving dedicated treatment and monitoring from the Zoo’s animal care and veterinary teams
Masamba came to Naples Zoo in 2009 and in 2013 was paired with a female
this pair welcomed three cubs to the family
The zoo said Masamba "was a gentle and patient father
he served as a wonderful ambassador for his species."
"His legacy will live on through his three sons
and through Naples Zoo’s continued commitment to lion conservation and education."
Things to do in February in Naples: Festivals, concerts, plays, more
Masamba's cubs moved to east coast in 2022The three cubs left Naples Zoo for Melbourne in 2022 as part of the Species Survival Plan
a cooperatively managed breeding program that works to create sustainable populations of threatened and endangered species within zoos across the country
and Chobe (Cho-bee) — in 2019 were the first lion cubs to be born at Naples Zoo in more than 30 years
Zoo officials in August 2022 announced the unexpected death of Timber the giraffe
Timber was the oldest giraffe in the zoo’s herd
a subspecies or species of giraffe native to the Horn of Africa and lives in Somalia

a festival took place in Dublin which was to have a profound effect on community music in Ireland
hosted by the City Arts Centre and Wet Paint Arts
brought together percussion cultures from Ireland
a series of workshops and performances took place
culminating in a earth-shattering show at the Ormond Multi Media Centre
and the reverberations from this event are still being felt three decades later
Brazilian samba percussion was a popular element of the festival
with stand-out performances by the Drogheda Samba Band and Mac-Umba (Glasgow) wowing audiences and workshop participants alike
The City Arts Centre decided to harness this positivity and organised a series of team-building workshops facilitated by Colin Blakey of the Drogheda band
Colin had recently left the wildly acclaimed Waterboys at the height of their success
providing percussion workshops with local young people
This process was replicated at the City Arts Centre
and the project was so successful that it soon became an independent project
the group is still performing and teaching – older
I came to the band from a background steeped in music
Terry was a mainstay on the traditional scene in Galway
and was famous for busking outside the Claddagh Palace Cinema and the Galway Races
One of my earlies memories was of the silhouettes of musicians around the open stone fireplace in our house outside Spiddal in Galway
traditional music was very much of the people in the West of Ireland
coupled with my later obsession with punk music and the DIY movement
fixed the notion in my mind that music should be accessible to all
and that every genre of music should be respected
My work in Masamba is an expression of that belief
there has always been a social justice element to our work
One of our earliest influences was the samba-reggae music of Ile Aiye and Olodum
What impressed us was that these groups could make beautiful music
and use their influence to promote equality and tolerance
These groups came from the Liberdade (liberty) neighbourhood of Salvador in North East Brazil
we recently hosted Ile Aiye at our rehearsal space
Masamba has been moving from one rehearsal venue to the next
We have been based in the Liberties for over 20 years
The band incorporated as a company in 2002 and registered as a charity soon afterwards
Core funding for Masamba’s activities is provided by the Community Services Programme (CSP)
an initiative of the Department of Rural and Community Development
and the we are expected to match government funding with traded income
This income comes mainly from the delivery of training projects
performances and grants from other agencies
Masamba Samba School delivers over 400 percussion and dance workshops each year
but the group is always available to work directly with small community groups and other charities
The group has also lent its support to many causes and issues over the years
and ongoing causes such as support for Palestine/Gaza
we have also plenty of experience of performing at the highest level
and participated in most of Ireland’s premier festivals and played at most of Ireland’s most prestigious venues
There have even been a few TV appearances along the way
These experiences are great opportunities for band members
It can be difficult to negotiate the sometimes contradictory needs of the professional or ‘high’ art sector and the amateur or community arts
there is the need to produce a professional level performance
while at the same time creating a welcoming environment for participants from diverse backgrounds and with differing needs
the mainstream arts sector is now catching up with community based arts
as artists and audiences demand a more tolerant and accepting experience from their arts institutions
Masamba Samba School will perform a celebratory concert to mark our 30th birthday
The event will include the many diverse members of the group
including members of the Masamba Youth Project
We will be joined on the night by our long time mentor and collaborator Dudu Tucci
Dudu has worked with the band in many different settings
and looks to a bright future of samba in Dublin
Masamba Samba School receives core funding from the Community Services Programme
The Masamba 30th Anniversary celebrations are funded by Dublin City Council Arts Office
Tickets for the Sugar Club show are free, but must be booked in advance from Eventbrite here: https://tinyurl.com/4jnan4m4

Introduction: Despite recommendation that all women receive an ultrasound in pregnancy prior to 24 weeks'
this remains unavailable to many women in low-income countries where trained practitioners are scarce
Although many programmes have demonstrated efficacy
with a lack of information about how best to implement such programmes
This mixed-methods study aimed to evaluate the implementation of a novel education package to teach ultrasound-naive midwives in Malawi basic obstetric ultrasound
assessing its impact in the context of the Reach
Implementation and Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework
Methods: The study ran across six sites in Malawi between October 2020 and June 2021
encompassing three phases; pre-implementation
Twenty nine midwives underwent a bespoke education package with matched pre and post course surveys assessed their knowledge
attitudes and confidence and “hands on” assessments evaluating practical skills
Training evaluation forms and in-depth interviews explored their satisfaction with the package
with repeat assessment and remote image review evaluating maintenance of skills
Results: 28/29 midwives completed the training
however many changes to the proposed methodology were adaptive and appeared to facilitate the efficacy of the programme
despite reporting approval regarding the training itself
satisfaction regarding supervision and follow up was mixed
reflecting the difficulties encountered with providing ongoing in-person and remote support
Conclusion: This programme was successful in improving trainees' knowledge
confidence and skill in performing basic obstetric ultrasound
largely on account of an adaptive approach to implementation
The maintenance of ongoing support was challenging
By evaluating the success of this education package based on its implementation and not just its efficacy
we have generated new insights into the barriers to sustainable upscale
specifically those surrounding maintenance
or indeed risk being exposed to unnecessary ones
a factor especially pertinent in low- and middle- income countries
Guidelines from the Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Malawi (AOGM) recommend ultrasound in a variety of different antenatal and intrapartum scenarios
despite no published data describing the coverage of antenatal ultrasound in Malawi
anecdotal evidence suggests this is only provided consistently at the central hospitals
reflecting a mis-match between the recommended standards of care and what can actually be provided
the lack of trained practitioners remains a significant problem
This mixed-methods study aimed to evaluate the implementation of a novel education package to teach ultrasound-naive midwives in Malawi basic obstetric ultrasound, assessing its impact in the context of the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework (34)
RE-AIM was chosen specifically for a number of reasons: (i) For its focus on realist evaluations of what works
(ii) its extensive prior use to evaluate the provision of skills training in both high- and low- income settings
and (iii) its familiarity to the study group
This study was undertaken as part of a “parent” study exploring what factors may influence the upscale of basic antenatal ultrasound in LMIC settings (PACTR202010788566263)
It was carried out across 6 sites in Malawi
selected to encompass both urban and rural facilities
The pre-implementation phase began in October 2020 and lasted 14 weeks
Implementation took place for 4 weeks in January-February 2021 and the post-implementation phase extended for 18 weeks until the end of June 2021
In order to facilitate remote image review
we also developed a bespoke app to permit image transfer and messaging between the trainees and faculty
The participating sites were all primary level facilities
serving populations of between 20,300 to 596,230
and two in the northern district of Karonga
The number of staff providing antenatal care at these sites ranged from 6 to 23 and in order to preserve the continuity of subsequent scanning services while accounting for staff absence or relocation
we sought to train a minimum of four midwives per site
Midwives were invited to participate having been identified by their local District Nursing Officer (DNO) as a key provider of antenatal care to women at the participating facilities and engaged in service improvement
Trainers were recruited based on pre-specified criteria
All must have received training in basic obstetric ultrasound
have at least 12 months experience of performing ultrasound independently and be confident to troubleshoot any problems the trainees may encounter
Having been provided with a comprehensive training manual
the faculty were orientated to the programme virtually as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic
This brief was delivered by the team responsible for the course development and included the content and delivery of the curriculum
how to facilitate the “hands on” sessions and how to assess the trainees according to standardized criteria
China) and consumables such as ultrasound gel and tissues
including comprehensive printed handbooks for both trainees and trainers were also distributed to participating sites
along with copies of the context specific guideline
To ensure adequate numbers of client volunteers were available to participate in the ‘hands on' sessions of the training programme
participating sites were encouraged to recruit women in advance and request they attend on specific days
Pregnant women were eligible to participate as client volunteers if they were over 18 years old
thought to be over 14 weeks gestation and able to provide informed written consent
All were provided with a small allowance to cover their travel expenses
The education package was delivered across the six sites in January-February 2021 with the ultrasound training programme consisting of 2 days didactic teaching, followed by 8 days of supervised “hands on” practice, as shown in Figure 1. The different components of the education package are detailed in Figure 2
each trainee undertook a 24-question multiple choice knowledge test to assess their theoretical understanding of ultrasound and completed a questionnaire using a 5 point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree
5 = Strongly Agree) to assess their attitude toward
Both of these assessments were repeated immediately after completion of the training and again 3 months later
Trainees also undertook Observed Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) to assess their practical skills and completed a post course evaluation form at the end of the programme
password protected tablets and transferred to the secure study server daily
A proportion of purposively sampled midwives who had attended the training underwent an in-depth interview (IDI) at the end of the programme (n = 14
20%) of both trained and untrained midwives participating in focus group discussions (FGD)
These took place both before and after the training and were significantly limited in number as a result of ongoing COVID-19 restrictions
In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were undertaken by trained research assistants under the direct supervision of the authors MPM and CB. Sampling was purposive, targeting only the midwives who had undergone the ultrasound training and the interviews took place at the study sites until data was saturated. The board topic guide (Supplementary material) sought to explore the midwives response to training and the subsequent support they received
as well as their overall attitude toward using ultrasound
The objective of the focus group discussions was to better understand the impact of introducing the scan training on group dynamics within the individual sites
Interviews and FGDs were conducted in either Chichewa or English
according to the participants' preference
and were recorded and transcribed verbatim
All transcripts were translated into English by trained transcribers
with verification undertaken by either MPM or CB
participants were dissuaded from using names and all recordings were stored using unique identifiers
approximately 10 weeks after the ultrasound training
Outcomes of this study were evaluated in the context of the RE-AIM framework, with Table 1 providing details of this process
along with outcome indicators and the relevant data sources
Implementation process outcomes and corresponding data sources
Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows
Pre and post course questions evaluating similar concepts were allocated into 4 groups for analysis; perceived risk
confidence and attitudes toward using ultrasound
with reliability of the groupings tested using Cronbach's alpha
they were then analyzed as a group using a Wilcoxon signed rank test
If a group did not demonstrate adequate reliability
the statements were analyzed as single items
Matched pre and post course knowledge tests were analyzed using paired t-tests
A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant
a thematic framework was generated based on the topic guides
with revisions undertaken as new themes emerged
Transcripts were iteratively coded using NVivo software (QSR International Pty Ltd)
with codes grouped into categories and then themes
These were reviewed to identify patterns and make comparisons across the groups
the Ministry of Health in Malawi and the Directors of Health and Social Services (DHSS) of the participating sites were involved in the planning and implementation of this project
All participants (trainees and client volunteers) provided informed written consent
with participant information leaflets and consent forms available in both Chichewa and Tumbuka
This study was approved by the University of Edinburgh and the University of Malawi – College of Medicine Research and Ethics Committee (COMREC) P08/19/2768
Twenty nine midwives participated in the training
all of whom held either a Diploma or Degree in Nursing/Midwifery and none had any previous experience of using ultrasound
They had an average of 11 years of clinical experience
All midwives who were invited to participate did so
with 22 completing matched pre and post course knowledge tests and 23 completing both pre and post course questionnaires
Post course evaluation data was available for 19 participants and 14 underwent an in-depth interview
all of whom held either a Medical Degree or a Diploma in Clinical Medicine or Radiology
Twelve had undergone formal training in ultrasound
with three receiving “on the job” training from experienced practitioners
They had an average of 6 years' experience in performing obstetric ultrasound
Trainers were paid to contribute and all who were invited to participate did so
Three hundred and ninety five pregnant women participated in the “hands on” element of the training
and of these 212 (54%) were unable to recall their LMP
a further 85 were assigned a new gestational age based on the measurements obtained by the trainer
suggesting that their LMP had been inaccurate
ultrasound improved the accuracy of pregnancy dating for 297 (75%) of the women who participated
This quantitative increase in confidence was mirrored in the midwives' reflections on their progress
the more you practice the more you develop some experience and we tend to laugh ‘ah ah the same patients we could spend so much time with but now we just go and follow the steps
nothing complicated.' We have indeed gained some momentum.” FGD
Although 13% (54/405) of the assessments were considered a fail
the incidence of this decreased as the training progressed
In eight cases failure was due to an inability to complete one of the five “critical tasks,” the most common problem being the inability to correctly determine presentation
In 41 cases it was due to insufficient accuracy in the determination of gestational age
The most common reason the midwives chose to participate in the training
was that they believed skills in ultrasound would help them provide better care and also enhance their own skills
They further expressed their frustration at the limitations of trying to determine gestational age clinically
“Most of the women do not know their last date of menstrual period so with the scanning introduced; in most cases we do find the EDD which most of the women did not know.” IDI with Midwife from urban site Z
The post course questionnaire data (Table 2) supported an overall increase in the midwives' beliefs regarding the importance of ultrasound in antenatal care after training
although this result did not reach significance
The midwives were also motivated on a personal level
believing that gaining skills in ultrasound would be important for their professional development
although one expressed disappointment at not being paid extra to perform scans
“This training is useful because it's like we are increasing our knowledge and our CV (Curriculum Vitae) is also updated.
this study is very beneficial in all levels
whether for the facility or individually.” IDI with midwife from rural site K
“The investigators need to motivate healthcare staff by giving them something.
this is the only study that we are involved with without being paid anything.
healthcare staffs are not motivated to help.” IDI with midwife from urban site Z
The midwives welcomed the concept of training in ultrasound
with 95% (n = 18/19) agreeing or strongly agreeing that the course was relevant to them
100% (n = 19) reported that they had enjoyed the course
“To us it is a welcomed idea… because now we have added another knowledge that we were not able to do… like a next step of caring for our patients.” IDI with midwife from urban site Z
Post course questionnaires revealed no difference in the midwives interest in performing scans (Table 2)
A third of respondents to the post course evaluation (n = 6/19) requested the incorporation of additional components
“The gap is there as we cannot scan pregnancy in the first trimester
of course I can just see a gestation sac but I cannot determine gestation age because we were given the limits… We should be taught all areas of scanning.” IDI with midwife from urban site Z
Despite reporting satisfaction with the training course itself
attitudes toward the subsequent supervision was mixed
whereas others felt the supervision had been lacking
“Training was enough because we had supervisors who were helping us do the scanning properly and right now I would say we have support…” IDI with midwife from urban site A
“We feel that the support being provided is very good from the people who taught us this intervention…” IDI with midwife from urban site S
“…But we are somehow lacking supervision.” IDI with midwife from rural site C
Cause I haven't been mentored but during the rotation for the other team
they were mentored once.” IDI with Midwife from urban site Z
Midwives all agreed that the provision of ultrasound scans was beneficial
They stated that they were able to provide better care by being able to accurately detect the EDD
they were also able to spot anomalies such fetal positioning
“What encourages women is that they want to know what is happening with their pregnancy
sometimes the position of the child in the womb is abnormal
so it helps to identify that problem early and find ways to minimize complications during delivery.” IDI with midwife from urban site S
“Scanning itself has improved quality of care
are satisfied with our services because they feel that they have received the right care and this is encouraging to us
since the introduction of scanning our job has been easier unlike in the past
with scanning we have a proper backing and when we are telling the woman her results we are so confident because it is backed up by visible evidence so as health workers scanning has really helped us in our job.” IDI with midwife from urban site A
The total cost of delivering this programme across six sites was £55,182
all training materials and 6 new ultrasound machines
the theoretical component of the course was delivered virtually
with all trainees attending simultaneously
To enable trainers to rotate to the different sites
delivery of the “hands on” sessions were staggered
All trainees attended both the online theoretical and the practical “hands on” sessions
with the exception of the simulation sessions
were delivered according to the training manual
a ratio of 1:4 trainers to trainees was maintained for all “hands on” sessions
“From day one we were learning step by step until practicals
We were taught to follow an order of things.” IDI with midwife from Urban Site A
Although all trainees completed practical assessments
the overall number of clients recruited per site varied greatly
affecting trainees' scanning exposure
The total number of scans performed by individual trainees ranged from 7 to 38
there were some issues with data collection
with not all trainees completing all forms
On one occasion this was due to an uploading error
however at other times it appears to have been oversight
The greatest deviation from proposed methodology occurred in the provision of mentorship and follow up
which was purposed to occur as a hybrid of site visits and remote image review
limited opportunities for the faculty to visit the sites and users with non-android devices were unable to download the bespoke app developed for remote review
trainees were required to print a subset of their anonymised images
which were then collected in person with general and targeted feedback provided a week later
While the didactic and “hands on” elements of the training package were largely delivered as intended
the provision of supervision varied between the sites
with some deviating significantly from the intended processes
Aside from seeking refresher training and more robust mentorship
the midwives expressed strong sentiment that in order for ultrasound services to be sustained
efforts should be made to train more staff
Not only were they concerned about workload
but interruption to services when staff moved posts
They felt that the government should be involved in trying to facilitate this
“For effective implementation of ultrasound scanning intervention
every health worker must be trained…” FGD with midwives from rural site C
“It must involve every midwife because staff who are currently working at antenatal department won't be working there forever.” FGDs with midwives from urban site A
“The main problem is workload because there are a lot of clients here but the nurses who provide scanning are few…” IDI with midwife from urban site A
“The NGO has specific time to support us so after those have left the government should take over so that the project is sustainable” IDI with midwife from urban site S
They reported improved interpersonal relationships within the health facilities as a result of the introduction of ultrasound
feeling this to be a protective factor for longterm sustainability
“The support being provided by our colleagues is good as well…” IDI with midwife from urban site M
“When I fail on something I call a colleague for help.” IDI with midwife from urban site Z
further demonstrated by the need for some to rotate around the sites to provide training
Although all trainers invited to participate did so
they were paid for their involvement which may have influenced their decision to contribute
we do not have any information on the number of pregnant women who declined to participate and are therefore unable to comment on the proportion who were willing to undergo ultrasound
although this is being explored as part of the “parent” study
Some of the health centers suffered power outages during training
with others affected by local transport strikes
preventing the trainers from reaching the sites and therefore forcing sessions to be moved to different days
Despite recommending that pregnant women were approached in advance
recruitment of client volunteers to assist with the “hands on” sessions was very varied between sites
heavily impacting on trainees' individual exposure to practical experience
this is the first study to suggest that the introduction of ultrasound may have a specific role in improving team dynamics
having to move some sessions to alternative days meant that post course tests/questionnaires were overlooked
resulted in a lack of follow up data for all participants
therefore data pertaining to the retention of skills should be interpreted with caution
The strength of the qualitative data could have been improved by including formal structured observation of training sessions and in-depth interviews with the training faculty
however this was not possible within human resource constraints
the implementation of this education package was undertaken within the context of a research study and therefore it should be acknowledged that it will have benefitted from additional funds and support which may not have been available without substantial buy-in from the Malawian Government
the progress of this programme has been endorsed by the Reproductive Health Directorate of the Ministry of Health of Malawi
the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Malawi and the Association of Malawian Midwives
with discussions ongoing about how to incorporate this into the nursing and midwifery curriculum in Malawi
This package was strengthened by being delivered exclusively by local trainers
a contrast to many similar programmes and an important feature for sustainability
Not only were the local team better placed to understand the complexities of the setting
but also better equipped to troubleshoot any unexpected issues
A huge effort was made to adapt the training programme to try to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 and the scope for reactive and iterative changes within the protocol meant the approach to implementing the package was both pragmatic and representative of a “real world” scenario
By evaluating the implementation of this education package using the RE-AIM framework
we have been able to highlight the specific domains which require further input
in this case “maintenance.” In doing so we believe this will help focus efforts to optimize uptake and sustainability
which may provide important considerations for future scale up
While aspects of implementation were challenging
an adaptive approach meant that this education package was successful in improving the knowledge
confidence and practical skills of a representative cohort of ultrasound-naive midwives in Malawi
the subsequent maintenance of support and supervision was problematic
highlighting the need for more work to determine the optimum approach to facilitate this

who is one of South Africa’s top boxing talents
to overcome childhood trauma and manage his anxiety
ahead of his shot at making the Paris 2024 Olympics
The 23-year-old lightweight is one of South Africa’s top talents
bamboozling opponents with his power and agility
But perhaps his real strength lies with his mental fortitude by overcoming depression and anxiety issues
“I've got hidden scars,” Masamba told Olympics.com
“They happened because of childhood trauma
“But I went back to the gym to remove the pain and emotion that I was feeling inside through hitting the bags
Masamba started boxing at the age of 14 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
But an event happened two years later that would change his life forever.
“My friends and I were taking a walk. But then I got caught in [an] incident and a lot of security started touching me and I didn’t know what was happening,” Masamba explained.
“I got tortured and I was rushed to hospital with a kidney problem.
“They let me go the next day and my body was beaten up from my calves which were bleeding to my elbows and shoulders which were fractured a little bit. I walked all the way home, six kilometres, and I cried to my dad.
The episode made the young athlete give up on sport, as he spiralled into a deeply negative mental state, where he says he considered taking his own life.
“I was a top youth boxer, winning a lot of medals nationally and internationally,” he explained.
“I used to see a therapist, but it never helped. I started running away from home and staying somewhere else for a month or two as I needed some space.”

With nowhere else to turn, the boxer decided to return to the gym in a bid to get his life back on track.
“I told myself, ‘I'm not going to let this pain get to me. I'm going to just go back to the gym, Let me stay away from being alone and watching TV.'
“If I needed to talk to someone, I would talk to my coaches and my mum and it helped.
“Slowly I started to feel okay again, and then I started feeling excited and energetic.
“So people are going through depression and anxiety, I'd like to motivate them and say don't give up on anything, even if it's your dreams, even if it’s hard to keep going, just push through as everything is possible."
"I've been through this pain, I've tried to commit suicide, I’ve almost quit so many times, but I just told myself, 'No, I'm not going to do it, I have goals to achieve, I have years inside me'.” - John Paul Masamba to Olympics.com
Picture by Booysens Amateur Boxing ClubJohn Paul Masamba represented South Africa at the AFBC Youth Championships boxing in 2018 in Casablanca, Morocco. After overcoming a traumatic episode, he now wants to motivate others to do the same ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Getting back into mental and physical shape was only one part of the challenge for Masamba.
Where he comes from, temptation and negativity were around every corner, and it was another daily battle to avoid it.
“I had a lot of things going on, even at home, but I had to ignore it,” he said.
“Usually I would just stay away from certain friends and bad company. I would prefer to be alone or hang out with the people who are really close to me at home.
“If not, I was just out riding my bike, getting something to eat, but mostly the gym and with my coaches. They helped me see clearly in my mind.
“Leave the negative people behind and believe in yourself.”

In addition to motivating others to believe in themselves, Masamba wants to restore his nation’s boxing reputation.
Boxing is South Africa’s third most successful Olympic sport, with six gold medals, four silvers, and a bronze.
But with the latest of these being Daniel Bekker’s second-place finish at Rome 1960 in the heavyweight division, it has been a very baron period in the ring.
“I just want to qualify for the Olympics so badly,” Masamba told us. “That's my calling, this is my dream. I want to be the first good boxer in so many years that South Africa has brought through.
“People have wanted to take me away from the amateurs to the pros for a while and other people have doubted me to make the national team, but I told everyone, ‘No, I want to prove myself again and again."
“I lost some matches last year but I'm going to prove to myself and everyone else that I am still the best.” - John Paul Masamba to Olympics.com
“If I get... Once I get it, it'll be a dream come true. I'll prove a lot of people wrong.
“I used to have anxiety and depression but now I'm calm and collected and I’ll change a lot of people's minds about me.
“My success could help a lot of people to see how a boy that struggled is now pushing himself. No matter what your background is, you can achieve your goals. You can let the pain out.
“No matter what happens, you can never give up, keep going.”
FCB Nyasa Big Bullets is delighted to announce that midfielder Matthews Masamba has joined the club on a three-year contract.
The 22-year-old has joined The People’s Team as a free agent after leaving Mighty Mukuru Wanderers at the end of his one-year loan spell at Bangwe All Stars in December.
He impressed head coach Kalisto Pasuwa during his two-week trial with the 2023 quadruple winners.
Masamba told club media: “I am very excited to join Bullets. Every player dreams of playing for such a club with a history of winning trophies. I can’t wait to get started and I believe this is where I will further my career to greater heights.
“The weeks I spent here doing trials gave me the courage to keep pushing and I have a clear picture of what is expected of me. Pasuwa has been teaching me where to improve and how to do it and this is something that will improve my game going forward.
“I have also been welcomed well by my new teammates, who made me feel at home the moment I arrived. We travelled to Mponela where I played two games and the feeling of playing for this team was special. I am looking forward to helping the team continue winning trophies because I also want to be part of the history.”
Masamba is Pasuwa’s fourth signing in the ongoing domestic transfer window as he is preparing his team ahead of the 2024 season, which kicks off next week with the NBS Bank Charity Shield match against Silver Strikers at Bingu National Stadium.
He joins Innocent Nyasulu, Lloyd Aaron and Babatunde Adepoju as new additions to The People’s Team.

This subject appealed to me because I felt that a strong understanding of how the economy works and how that affects the incentives of different agents would allow me to get a greater understanding of the world around me in general
There are particular areas of Economics that interest me
Development Economics and the workings of trade are a favourite of mine
I wrote a dissertation on the “resource curse” of the Democratic Republic of Congo
Despite being one of the most minerally rich countries on the planet
the DRC population find themselves to be some of the poorest people in the world
As I dug into the way in which countries like this have been exploited and the economic impacts
I wondered how such misfortune could be reversed
And this is one thing that I would like to use my degree for in the distant future – policy development in developing countries
But I am one of many that have been enticed by the financial services
this involves investing the money of others into different asset classes to earn them a return
I love the thought of making money work for you via investing
creating another stream of income for yourself
It’s one way I’d like to get myself out of the rat race
There have been a number of things that I have gotten involved with that have been interesting
my role on the UCL Entrepreneurs Venture Capital Fund committee takes the top spot
we provide students running their own startups with some funding to provide an extra boost
I have found this interesting because of the immense quality of student-run businesses that I have come across
I was constantly impressed with the unique ideas and companies being built by our very own
One student that applied this year had a business that was turning air into drinking water
Another was building a forest fire detection system for governments and timber companies
I am seeing some of the most innovative individuals showcase their entrepreneurship
This is second to the study abroad programme that I got involved with last year
I attended a summer school programme which was hosted by one of our partner universities
And I was one of four representatives of UCL
as we developed a business plan to pitch to professors from their school of management
Not only was the content taught to us and the experience useful
but the chance to experience a completely different culture was enriching
we got to visit companies like Alibaba and explore Hangzhou
as well as surrounding cities like Shanghai
One of the best study spaces on campus has to be our UCL Hub in Senate House
very modern with rooms that you can sit in with friends to collaborate
It seems emptier than other spaces so there’s always a seat to be found there
One thing that my friends and I love to do is go on late night/early morning bike rides around central London
In our first year whenever we felt like it
we would stay up to around 4am and then hop on the Boris (Santander) Bikes and roll around central London like a little biker gang
we’d cross the bridge and then ride down the Thames and cross to the other side on Millennium bridge
and I can imagine that every student has done this
but you have to go and see the sunset against the skyline from a high point
I recommend free places like Sky Garden or Primrose Hill
Another thing that’s high up that I recommend is going to the balcony of the Monument to the great fire of London
you’ll be rewarded with a great view of the City
I would be more overt in censuring the legacy of eugenics at UCL and would ensure that there was no link to things like the London Conference on Intelligence (LCI) in the first place. There’s still a lot to do to #DecoloniseUCL (you can find out more about this in this Students’ Union article)
She is the most hard-working person I know
juggling a million things at once all to make sure that my two younger brothers and I are living well

I can never fully repay her for everything she has sacrificed and done for me
and can name every country on the planet in one go

He added that Rwandan cultural troupe represents the country’s culture and it needs to be perfect in all angles which makes it hard for a director to mix it with other personal projects

Sasha Masamba, 21, attacked two women from behind with knives as they walked home at night, leaving them with permanent scars to their face and neck. There was no motive for the attacks, which took place in suburban streets in west London
pleaded guilty to two offences of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm
He was jailed at the Old Bailey for 18 years
said: "This is a most disturbing case
there was no request for money or sexual intent
The deep concern is a lack of any rational explanation for these acts
The victims could easily have died because the knife wounds were near arteries."
The Old Bailey heard that over 10 days in August 2012 Masamba prowled the area around Hounslow station and on two occasions slashed women late at night
He was arrested at Hounslow station by PC Rebecca Skinner
on 21 August after she recognised his CCTV image
Masamba pleaded not guilty to the attempted murders of Kaja Zablocka
but admitted the lesser charges of wounding
told the court: "This defendant is every woman's nightmare – a man who arms himself with a knife and then prowls around late at night waiting for a lone female to attack
followed and then assaulted the innocent women walking home from public transport."
She said in one case Masamba had been prowling around for three hours looking for a victim
who was walking home from the station just before midnight after spending the evening with friends in the West End
Masamba grabbed her throat and then said: "Sorry
She did not immediately realise she had been cut
but after he made off she felt dizzy and fell to her knees
She was taken to hospital and received seven stitches to a 3cm wound
She also had a continuous cut stretching around her neck
as she was heading home from work in central London
He approached her from behind and she saw a breadknife as he slashed her across the chin
Cheema said Aurelio put up a fierce fight during which Masamba tried to stab her twice in the stomach
The knife was later found in a nearby street and had DNA from the attacker and victim
Aurelio was said to be awaiting plastic surgery for a 5cm scar on her face
Both women were said to have been traumatised by the attacks and were now afraid of going out alone at night
Cheema said that a couple of days later Masamba posted threats on his Facebook page
They said: "I want to bite your ears off
cut your limbs with a breadknife and feed your insides to sever rats."
DCI Amanda Hargreaves said outside court: "This lengthy sentence reflects the nature of the offences
Masamba was caught before he potentially killed someone
which I believe was only a matter of time."
Police released a statement from Aurelio in which she said: "The night I was attacked it just felt like a small cut to my chin at first
but the next day I realised how serious it was and became more and more scared
"I have lost my confidence and avoid being outside alone at night
this is a constant reminder of the attack and how close I came to being killed
"I am still waiting for plastic surgery on the scar so I can then hopefully begin to look at myself as normal again
I am still very self-conscious of the scar
People stare at it and often ask what happened
This always upsets me as it reminds me of that horrible night."

As one way of bringing variety and a different touch to his music
Salima-based fast uprising Gospel musician Levison Masamba has featured veteran Musician Evance Meleka in his latest afropop song titled ‘Zipite’
the two musicians are taking an advisory role encouraging listeners that there are some things in life that when you don’t let go can ruin everything
citing toxic relationships and other bad behaviours as classic examples
Masamba said the song depicts a story of Abraham and Loti where God blessed Abraham so much after he made a critical decision to part ways with Loti
“There are moments in life when habits become so sweet that you cannot let go
there are relationships that we get too much hold of yet we are losing a lot of things because of such relationships and it is better to let them go
“Zipite is the song that is giving courage to people to make critical decisions that no one could do for them to make the difference in their lives
“It is high time we continue to tolerate things or people that make us stagnant in life
it is time to drop those things that do not add value to our spiritual and physical life,” he said
Masamba said he featured Meleka to add variety to the song and embracing the teamwork spirit
“I believe that Collaborating with another artist can produce great creative results
working with someone new can take you out of your comfort zone
introduce you to new songwriting practices and ideas
He also believes that making collaboration with a veteran artist can be an awesome boost of exposure and it is a great way to expand a fan base considering that people have different likes
In a separate interview Evance Meleka said as an artist he also believes in team work and he feels good to see upcoming musicians making it big in the industry
working with another artist is an opportunity for me to tap into a new fan base
my music will get exposed to new people; people who have a predisposition to like his or her music and those who like my music will also have the chance to taste something different,” he said

Enterprising boxer Limbani ‘The Lion’ Masamba got a special Christmas present on Boxing Day when he defeated Kudakwache Banda through a technical knock-out in a 12-round Super-welterweight title bout staged before a good crowd at central region boxing mecca M1 Centre Point in the capital city
The victory saw Masamba reclaiming the Super-welterweight belt
which he lost last year after losing to Chikondi Makawa
Makawa eventually surrendered the belt to Masamba’s rival Kudakwache
who was stripped of the title three months ago
having lost by knock-out to Masamba in an eight-round non-title bout at the M1 Centre Point
any belt holder who loses by knock-out is automatically stripped of his title
Unwilling to let his belt go just like that
Kudakwache sought to reclaim the title at the expense of his rival Masamba
the two boxers came face to face in the ring at the central region boxing mecca
Round one saw the boxers sizing each other up but the real business began in the second round
when Kudakwache was forced to kneel down in the ring by a combination of heavy punches from the ‘Lion.’
when he sent his opponent sprawling on the canvas with a lucky punch
who was more aggressive and precise woke up and pressed for a knock-out
which looked inevitable in the seventh round
Kudakwache was forced to his kneels again in the seventh round but as he appeared to beat the count from referee Leonard Metazama
Masamba was declared winner on technical knock-out and got back his belt from Malawi Professional Boxing Board president Lonzo ‘Defector’ Zimba
“I feel very happy to have reclaimed my title and I thank God for giving me strength to win this bout
sparring partner Limbani Lano and all those who helped me prepare for this bout,” said Masamba
who knocked his opponent unconscious at the same venue three months ago
Kudakwache accepted defeat but said he would need the belt at a certain point in time: “I accept the loss but I will need the belt at a certain point
The way I fought today was not what I expected but I have to go back on the drawing board and rectify my weaknesses before my next bout,” said Kudakwache
spokesperson for Ngwenyama Boxing Promotions
which sponsored the bout said the boxing firm was satisfied with the manner things went
“We are satisfied with the way things have gone
The turn-up was also encouraging and we are going to continue sponsoring high profile bouts and improving where we have not done well,” said Chakunkha

“We want to bring the church and local communities together in changing the life-path of young people as well as spread the love of God to them,” he said
Bishop Masamba said they had commenced the process of formulating a strategic plan to anchor the programme in church activities and also develop a plan to achieve the goal

There was drama at Robins Park in Blantyre on Saturday as Osgood Kayuni was controversially declared the winner of the 8-round non-title fight against Wilson Masamba
The two Malawi Defence Force boxers were meeting for a third time with Kayuni winning on previous two attempts
both boxers looked lively despite spending much of the time holding each other
Masamba enjoyed the opening four rounds of the bout but failed to release a punch that could have taken Kayuni down
Kayuni on the other hand kept Masamba in a tight corner for most parts of the last four rounds but this time around failed to release a hook that could nock down his bitter rival
drama started when results were being announced with one judge being reported to have given 88 points to a single boxer while the bout was only for 8 rounds
it is also claimed that the announcer declared Kayuni the winner basing on the attire he was clad in on the day and not the corners as it is usually done in boxing
According to the results which were announced
the first Judge gave Kayuni 88 points against Masamba’s 75 with the second Judge giving each boxer 76 points while the third Judge gave Masamba 78 points against Kayuni’s 75 forcing the announcer to declare Kayuni the winner
according to results which Nyasa Times got from three judges
Masamba was supposed to be the winner of the fight
The first judge scored 79-76 in favor of Masamba
The other judge had scored 79-75 in favor of Masamba while the third judge scored 79-78 in favor of Masamba as well
the referee of the bout Mbachichi Nyirenda said what happened was unfortunate and a shame to the huge crowd that came to watch the bout at Robins Park
“It is very unfortunate because what the judges had scored were not what we heard from the announcer
It’s an embarrassment to the Masamba camp but I thank them for showing maturity afterwards
I have the scorecards and in all three scorecards
Masamba was the winner and the judges too were supprised to see Kayuni being declared the winner,” said Nyirenda
The bout was promoted by Mulanje Last Boxing Promotions with financial support from Chombe Tea Foods Limited
So whats the way forward ?????????????????????
