The Head of Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Maumere Class II Airport Operator Unit
stated that the reopening of the airport took place after the issuance of the Notice to Airman (NOTAM) for normal operation of the aerodrome under NOTAM Office Number: C1979/24 NOTAMC C1978/24 on December 1
and volcanic ash dispersion forecast maps shows that the airspace of the airport has not been affected by volcanic ash since December 1
2024," Partahian said in an official statement from the Ministry of Transportation on Tuesday
ASHTAM is a type of special NOTAM with a specific format that provides information on changes in volcanic activity
and ash clouds that may affect aircraft operations
SIGMET News is a message that contains information related to meteorological phenomena and hazards that may affect aviation safety
Partahian also mentioned that this assessment was supported by information from the Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Meteorological Station regarding the wind forecast for the Sikka district for December 2-6
which shows the dominant wind direction moving from west to north
Partahian mentioned that Wings Air and Nam Air have resumed ticket sales for flights beginning December 16
these two airlines had suspended operations since July 17
due to the presence of hazardous volcanic ash in the airspace
Wings Air operates the Maumere-Kupang round-trip route and the Labuan Bajo-Maumere round-trip route
Nam Air will operate the Kupang-Maumere round-trip route
Partahian also referred to the reopening of Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Maumere Airport as a pre-Christmas gift
"This will allow our brothers and sisters from and to Maumere and surrounding areas to travel home to gather with their families," he said
he assured that they will continue to coordinate with the Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Meteorological Station
and airlines to monitor developments regarding the impact of the eruption of Mount Lewotobi
"We will continue to coordinate with relevant parties to ensure safe and comfortable flights," said Partahian

TEKS KOMPAS/FRANS PATI HERINDengue fever patients are being treated at the TC Hillers Maumere Regional General Hospital on Friday (28/2/2020) morning
seven residents of Sikka have died due to dengue fever
JAKARTA, KOMPAS — The public is advised to remain vigilant about the transmission of the disease dengue hemorrhagic fever
Cases of diseases transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito are still high
At least 475 deaths were reported due to dengue fever in 2024
The Ministry of Health's report up to the 15th week of 2024 stated that the total number of deaths due to DHF was 475 cases
The highest deaths were reported in West Java (158 cases)
Banten (24 cases) and Central Kalimantan (17 cases)
there have been reported cases of 62,001 dengue fever illnesses
The highest cases were in West Java (17,331 cases)

The Head of the Communication and Public Service Bureau of the Ministry of Health
stated in Jakarta on Thursday (18/4/2024) that cases of dengue fever transmission have been reported in almost all regions of Indonesia
At least dengue fever cases have been reported in 454 districts or cities and deaths have occurred in 151 districts or cities
the community is reminded to be vigilant of the risk of dengue fever transmission
Dengue control and prevention must continue to be carried out
including after the 2024 Eid al-Fitr homecoming season
carry out movements to eradicate mosquito nests
This must be done starting from our homes because there is a risk of mosquito nests appearing during the homecoming period," he said
Efforts to eradicate mosquito nests can be carried out through the 3M movement
which is draining water storage containers
and burying or recycling used items that can hold water
the public is asked to be more active in eradicating mosquito nests in their environment
If symptoms of dengue fever such as high fever
it is important to immediately seek medical attention
Prompt and accurate treatment can reduce the risk of worsening due to dengue hemorrhagic fever
it is necessary to immediately seek medical attention
Nadia stated that although reports of dengue fever cases are still increasing
the availability of hospital beds is still in a safe condition
the bed occupancy rate in hospitals is still at 40 percent in general
There has also been no significant increase in bed occupancy after the homecoming exodus," she said
One of the dengue fever patients underwent treatment at the Cengkareng Regional General Hospital (RSUD)
Pediatrician specialist at Dr Sardjito Central General Hospital (RSUP)
as well as lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine
explained the population of the vector of dengue infection
namely mosquitoes Aedes aegyptiwill increase during the rainy season
As rainwater collects in various containers such as plastic glasses
the reported cases of dengue fever at the moment could potentially be higher than the reported numbers
This is because many people are infected without showing any symptoms
Also read: Death cases due to dengue hemorrhagic fever are dominated by children
must remain vigilant against the transmission of dengue fever
Preventive efforts are highly necessary so that infected children can be promptly treated and avoid more serious conditions
"In children who are symptomatic or show symptoms
especially when there is a sudden high fever that is continuous or persistent
"When they are given fever-reducing medication
usually the fever will not fall below 38 degrees Celsius," he said
The erratic rain this rainy season has caused dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) cases to rise sharply
other symptoms that usually appear in children
the appearance of bleeding spots on the skin
Children may also show different bodily responses compared to adults
the body's response when infected with dengue fever can be accompanied by joint and muscle pain
This is because children do not yet have the ability to communicate the pain they feel
"On the spectrum of severe dengue infections
when the number of platelets is already low
children may experience nosebleeds or bleeding gums when brushing their teeth," said Eggi
Eggi conveyed that dengue patients with a still good bodily condition are usually advised not to be hospitalized
this is done on the condition that the child still needs to be taken to the hospital or health center every day during the critical phase
Monitoring of hematocrit and platelet levels will be carried out until the critical phase is passed
children with dengue fever can be given fever-reducing medication in the form of paracetamol
Avoid other classes of drugs such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
This class of drugs can affect platelet function which can actually increase the tendency for heavy bleeding
Fumigation was conducted in a housing complex in the Cinangka district of Sawangan
Depok City on Sunday (17/2/2019) to prevent the spread of dengue fever-carrying mosquitoes
Another thing to take note of is ensuring that children receive sufficient water intake
and always being alert if emergency conditions such as stomach pain
Take them to a healthcare facility immediately when these emergency conditions arise
Also read: Prevent Dengue Fever during the Transition Period
Eggi added that parents must protect their children from dengue virus infection
Apart from eradicating mosquito nests inside and outside the house
parents can also make other efforts to prevent Aedes aegypti mosquito bites
"Parents can also make efforts to prevent mosquito bites
such as by wearing bright-colored covered clothing or using repellents
immediately recognize the symptoms and seek treatment at the nearest health facility," he said
Jakarta. A magnitude 7.5 earthquake was reported 95 kilometers north of Maumere
BMKG initially said the quake might potentially trigger a tsunami but revised it a few minutes later
saying the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami
the agency called for the locals to remain cautious about any aftershocks in the region
BMKG reported it monitored the earthquake epicentrum at the coordinates of 7.59 south latitude
and Larantuka all felt very strong shaking
Videos shared on social media showed people in Maumere running out to the streets.
Flores last suffered a devastating earthquake and tsunami on Dec 12
1992. With a magnitude of 7.8 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe)
the disaster claimed at least 2,500 people near the island
including 1,490 at Maumere and 700 at Babi Island
Indonesia (AP) — Arnoldus Yansen thought for certain he was going to become a Catholic priest
a bastion of priestly vocations located in the middle of a jungle on Flores
a predominantly Catholic island in Muslim-majority Indonesia
more than 580 diocesan priests and 23 deacons in nearly 70 years of existence
He tried to shake off what he thought were last-minute jitters before entering the priesthood
Yansen took off his clerical robes for good and joined the hundreds of prospective priests who resign or fail to take up Catholic vocations every year in Indonesia
“I felt like I didn’t fit in anymore and that I would be able to do more if I left,” said Yansen
who is now an administrator at a Catholic school
Ledalero Institute of Philosophy and Creative Technology
Pope Francis’ upcoming trip to Indonesia is putting a spotlight on the 8.6 million Catholics who make up 3% of the population
It’s a country where religious minorities remain on edge due to militant attacks that have targeted faith groups
but Yansen and others like him show that Indonesia is not immune from trends contributing to the Catholic Church’s global priest shortage
including fallout from the clergy sex abuse crisis and the pull of the fast-paced modern world
“The number of priests is never enough,” said the Rev
which is considered the largest Catholic seminary in the world by enrollment
there 2,466 diocesan priests in Indonesia in 2022
That number is supplemented by even more religious order priests
But Tanga noted that Indonesia’s population growth is outpacing priesthood vocations
“We will continue to face a shortage of priests in the future if nothing is done now.”
has long been seen as the future of the Catholic Church
both in terms of the number of baptized faithful and the number of men and women who decide to become priests or nuns
The Philippines and India outpace Indonesia
the number of seminarians in Indonesia is growing while it levels off or declines across the continent
While the Catholic Church is faced with priest-less parishes in many parts of the world
Ritapiret Seminary is overwhelmed with applicants
Men training to be diocesan priests typically spend six to eight years in the seminary
Less than 20 seminarians can be ordained each year
“To answer God’s calling and to choose a life as (a) priest remain something fascinating for people in this region,” Tanga said
“And yet we still appeal (to) youths to have courage to make a decision to take up church vocation
and the support from their families and society.”
Some consider taking up a vocation to be too dull when compared to more modern ways of life
Tanga said seminaries are now being challenged to brand and promote themselves to encourage young people to become priests
The school with 62 lecturers — more than half of whom are priests — is now a college where the public can study digital technology
and how to become Catholic religion teachers
During Pope John Paul II’s visit to Indonesia in 1989
he hailed the faithfulness of people in Flores and the flourishing number of priests and nuns
saying: “You must also understand that faithful service to Christ and his Church will not always earn you the world’s praise
you will sometimes receive the same treatment as the Lord: rejection
the room he spent the night in at the seminary has become a spiritual tourism destination
said their data shows that the Catholic priest shortage is not caused by a loss of resources
Sex abuse scandals and other unflattering news reports emerging from the Vatican and elsewhere contributed to Yansen’s decision to leave the path to priesthood
violent attacks are also a concern of the church in Indonesia
Although the country promotes itself as a bastion of tolerance in the Muslim world
a small extremist fringe has become more vocal in recent years
a militant couple blew themselves up outside a packed Catholic cathedral on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island during a Palm Sunday Mass
Bishop Siprianus Hormat of Ruteng said he still believes that most Indonesians are tolerant unless something triggers a conflict
and that the country has a pluralist society that respects freedom of religion
acts or behaviors of intolerance are still there
“This is actually not a problem that is purely related to religious issue
but it was used to fuel people’s anger to oppress their political rivals or those who don’t agree with them.”
Though religious freedom is protected by Indonesia’s constitution
members of religious minorities and atheists have been increasingly subjected to discrimination
“Diversity of Indonesia is a reality that we cannot deny,” Hormat said
“We cannot tolerate any actions that aim to eliminate certain religion or race from this country.”
The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom said in its annual report in January that blasphemy allegations and convictions remain persistent religious freedom violations throughout Indonesia
The report said a new criminal code that will be implemented in 2026 will further criminalize blasphemy and expand on other violations
There also are concerns about local government initiatives to codify discrimination against minority communities gaining traction
my kingdom there will be no end,” said Tanga
“It means the vocations to become a priest and dedication to the service of Christ and his church will never wane,” he said

MAUMERE, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency said Monday that at least 10 people have died as a series of volcanic eruptions widens on the remote island of Flores
The eruption at Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki around midnight spewed thick brownish ash as high as 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) into the air and hot ashes hit several villages
burning down houses including a convent of Catholic nuns
an official at the Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki monitoring post
He said volcanic material was thrown up to 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from its crater
blanketing nearby villages and towns with tons of volcanic debris and forcing residents to flee
Rescuers were still searching for more bodies buried under collapsed houses

were found with a 4-kilometer (2.4 mile) radius of the crater
He said at least 10,000 people have been affected by the eruption in six villages of Wulanggitang District
Some have fled to relatives’ houses while the local government is readying schools to use as temporary shelters
The country’s volcano monitoring agency increased the volcano’s alert status to the highest level and more than doubled the exclusion zone to a 7-kilometer (4.3-mile) radius after midnight on Monday as eruptions became more frequent

Photos and videos circulated on social media showed tons of volcanic debris covering houses up to their rooftops in villages like Hokeng

About 6,500 people were evacuated in January after Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki began erupting
spewing thick clouds and forcing the government to close the island's Frans Seda Airport
No casualties or major damage were reported
but the airport has remained closed since then due to seismic activity
the head of Geology Agency at the Energy and Mineral Resources ministry said there was a different character between January’s eruption and Monday’s eruption due to a blockage of magma in the crater
which reduced detectible seismic activity while building up pressure
“The eruptions that occurred since Friday were due to the accumulation of hidden energy,” Wafid said
It’s Indonesia’s second volcanic eruption in as many weeks. West Sumatra province’s Mount Marapi

the annual cycling race in East Nusa Tenggara's main island
takes place in several stages over a total distance of 760.8 kilometers between Larantuka in the east and Labuan Bajo in the west of Flores Island
More than 832,000 Indonesians visited the province last year
Foreign tourist arrivals also doubled to 140,000 from a year earlier
Flores will be a coveted destination for global tourists," Frans said
The riders on the tour had just finished its stage five, a climb to Ruteng at 1,200 meters above sea level.
Around midnight, large boulders ejected from Lewotobi Laki-laki, hitting buildings up to 6 kilometres away. The victims - among them Sr Nikolin Padjo, Missionary Servant of the Holy Spirit - were caught in their sleep by the fiery lapilli. In the Minor Seminary in Hokeng, roofs were destroyed and structures burned, injuring 14 people. Caritas Indonesia is coordinating aid with the dioceses of Larantuka and Maumere.
Maumere (AsiaNews) - Last night, around midnight, the clear sky above the Lewotobi Laki-laki volcano turned red. At 1,703 metres high, located on the island of Flores in eastern Indonesia, it erupted at 11.59pm local time.
The phenomenon was not anticipated by any alarm and claimed at least 10 victims, who were hit by large, fiery lapilli in their homes as they slept. Among them was Sr. Nikolin Padjo, Missionary Servant of the Holy Spirit (SSpS), who was also caught in her sleep.
A huge flaming boulder fell into her room, and the entire house and adjacent structures immediately caught fire. This is not the first time the Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted. But last night, before the eruption, due to the absence of danger warnings, people were not prepared for possible disasters.
Sr. Herdiana - a sister of the deceased nun - spoke to AsiaNews confirming the tragedy and pointing out that all the other nuns are seeking refuge elsewhere in the regency of Eastern Flores. The National Disaster Management Agency (NDAB) has ordered the evacuation of the entire area within a 7 km radius of the volcano; residents are moving to villages 20 km away.
The local government has declared a state of emergency for 58 days to allow the central government to provide aid to the approximately 10,000 affected residents. The authorities are still collecting data on the number of displaced people. A new report on the situation today, the day after the eruption, confirms that an entire family also died as a result of last night's eruption.
Caritas in the dioceses of Larantuka and Caritas Indonesia are finalising their humanitarian response to the emergency. The executive director, Fr Freddy Rante Taruk, has arranged to coordinate the response with the two local dioceses, Larantuka and Maumere.
‘All the inhabitants of our complex have fled to safer places with only the clothes they are wearing and without anything to take with them,’ said a nun, urging emergency humanitarian aid to help the victims. In addition to the local complex of the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit, the San Domingo Minor Seminary in Hokeng, 6 km from the crater, was also severely affected by last night's eruption.
