Mission Aviation Fellowship is always looking for men and women who want to serve God and the Great Commission While there are several different roles in the ministry pilots are a key component to what MAF does every day He grew up overseas and his parents served with MAF the importance of the airplane to mission work was obvious to Marx and organizations they flew into remote and hard-to-reach areas suddenly had to find less convenient travel options This hampered Great Commission work such as Bible translation and evangelism “I just saw this gap and the struggle and God began working on my heart and I began to pray and say I will step through them and I could maybe fill the shoes of those pilots who are gone now.’” Marx attended Moody Bible Institute for a Bachelor of Science in Mission Aviation Technology He then got the rest of his necessary licenses and joined MAF as a pilot So what does a day in the life of an MAF pilot look like Marx gives us a glimpse into one of his personal reflections after a day of taking missions to the skies: I thought back to what had been accomplished with the plane to Pogapa I had half a dozen schoolkids who had been boarding in Nabire and now get to go back to their village and to their parents for Christmas (Photo courtesy of Mission Aviation Fellowship) a young lady was experiencing a miscarriage She was into her second trimester and the baby had passed Now she seemed to be in quite a lot of pain I would evacuate her to Nabire where doctors can help her There’s a special account where I can charge emergency medical needs one of the local teachers came running up to the plane She just found out her father passed away and she needs to fly home.’ I did my best to comfort these two passengers as we headed back to Nabire a huge privilege to help during their time of deepest need “Third leg was a plane full of pastors headed to Beoga there were many ‘amens!’ and enthusiastic ‘praise the Lord!’ It was pretty funny but terrific at the same time Their culture is different than mine and I appreciate and enjoy it “Fourth leg was full of folks headed over the mountain range to Timika and probably further for the holidays I had to fight some really tall rain clouds maintaining max climb performance all the way to 14,500 feet where I donned an oxygen mask and maneuvered to a safer air route where I could punch through the weather to better skies on the other side I landed in moderate rain and heavy crosswind in Timika “My fifth leg would take me back through that weather.” He pauses for an audible shudder I picked up some-60 pastors from interior villages for a ministry planning conference in Timika Now I would take nine of those home to their village on Dofu I briefed my passengers about the weather we’d face and then decided to swing out west hoping to find a better situation I only had to climb to 13,000 feet to clear the building storm a Bible translator who’s been working here for 20 or more years is making progress building his home with supplies that MAF delivered this fall Pray for John and his team of Edopi tribal pastors who bring salt and light to a very dark corner of the jungle “I found myself on the last leg back home to Nabire with three nurses and the doctor from Dofu all headed home for Christmas it’s unbelievable that today is just another average day at MAF Only God could take a group of simple pilots and little airplanes and do so much with them.’” One of the flights delivering a combined 7,000 pounds of plywood in Papua photo courtesy of Mission Aviation Fellowship) So what about you? Sometimes it’s a missionary or a pastor or an evangelist. Other times, it’s a teacher and schoolbooks. And sometimes it’s a huge pile of cargo…. The zookeepers at Dvůr Králové removed Nabire's healthy ovary as soon as she died, and they're now working on harvesting any remaining eggs. As Rachel Feltman reports for the The Washington Post these eggs will still be immature (the rhinos only release a mature egg every 30 days) but scientists hope they might be able to coax them into maturity in the lab or frozen sperm that's been collected over the years and then implant it into a similar species such as the southern white rhino in an attempt to produce new offspring "A first step involves sequencing the genomes of northern white rhinos to clarify the extent of genetic divergence from their closest relative But there are also researchers out there who think it may be too late to save species such as rhinos and pandas and that the resources could potentially be better spent trying to help out more viable survivors it's a pretty heartbreaking choice to have to make when so many of these creatures have been wiped out by human activity in the first place it would definitely be a big win if our human ingenuity could bring a species back from the brink of extinction for once Australian-supported Indonesian police special forces have shot dead a teenage Papuan high school student in central Nabire city, West Papua, reports West Papua Media The shooting took place on Monday in an “apparently premeditated ambush without provocation according to credible reports and witnesses from the scene” Local independent media in Nabire, UmagiNews are reporting that the extrajudicial killing occurred as the high school students were passing by the heavily armed police patrol near a roundabout in central Nabire West Papua Media stringers have confirmed these reports YPPGI (Senior High School) Karang Mulia Nabire West Papua after being chased by at least three vehicles full of heavily armed whose name has been withheld for protection told UmagiNews that Pekei was seen riding on a motorbike carrying a noken bag bearing of black clad special forces police belonging to the Australian-trained and funded counter-terror unit Special Detachment (Densus) 88 Densus88 has been used extensively for several years to conduct extremely violent repression against Papuan civilians engaged in peaceful acts of free expression and is currently deployed heavily across Papua whilst still receiving funding and training from the Australian Federal Police West Papua Media has published photos of Pekei – provided for publication by his family with permission – showing the entry wound caused by a bullet which is inconsistent with road impact at low-speed Warning: Images on this weblink may be distressing for some human rights observers told UmagiNews that questions arose that if Pekei was considered a road accident victim who was unconscious why he was dumped in the mortuary instead of receiving an attempt to revive him in the emergency room of the hospital Other circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been breeding efforts were more successful two are too old to reproduce and one has health issues preventing her from doing so Nabire’s death may indeed be the last nail in the coffin for her species But the Dvur Kralove zoo is holding out hope for one final chance Nabire’s healthy ovary was removed immediately upon her death and scientists will work to harvest any eggs that they can Those eggs would be immature — the species produces one mature egg only every 30 days — but the hope is that scientists can figure out how to coax them into maturity in the lab These artificially matured eggs could be fertilized using the sperm of the last surviving male of the species who lives in Kenya along with two infertile females or with any of the many sperm samples frozen throughout the years as the population dwindled it could be carried to term by a member of a closely related species but it seems like it’s the species’ only hope A moderate magnitude 4.0 earthquake hit 186 km (115 mi) away from Nabire, Central Papua,  Indonesia 2025 at 5.23 pm local time (Asia/Jayapura GMT +9) The quake had a very shallow depth of 5 km (3.1 mi) and was not felt (or at least not reported so) Nabire has a very high level of seismic activity Based on data from the past 25 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900 there are about 41 quakes on average per year in or near Nabire Nabire has had at least 6 quakes above magnitude 7 since 1900 which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently probably on average approximately every 20 to 25 years The quake had a very shallow depth of 23 km (14 mi) and was not felt (or at least not reported so) Nabire was shaken by 6 quakes of magnitude 4.0 or above 2025 at 2.53 pm local time (Asia/Jayapura GMT +9) The depth of the quake is unknown.The quake was not felt (or at least not reported so) A moderate magnitude 4.4 earthquake hit 5.9 km (3.7 mi) away from Nabire, Central Papua,  Indonesia 2020 at 1.37 am local time (Asia/Jayapura GMT +9) The depth of the quake could not be determined but is assumed to be shallow.The quake was not felt (or at least not reported so).
