Sport has always been something that brings people together in the life of Melbourne College of Sports Careers (MCSC) student Peter Pandak
Peter watched as people from all over would gather and embrace each other around competition and sport
“Sport is really big in my culture… the biggest sport is wrestling
people from different areas all just coming for one event once a year
it’s a big thing that everyone loves to watch.”
Peter and his family ensured they remained in touch with their culture through church
everyone is welcome from different backgrounds
We have translators who can translate into different languages
“Each occasion like Christmas and Easter we just throw these parties and everyone’s welcome to come
It’s mainly to bring everyone together.”
Having joined the MCSC program on a Multicultural Scholarship
Peter is excited to see where his experiences will take him moving forward
“I didn’t really know what to do when I finished high school
“It’s given me a great opportunity and has already opened doors for me that I can take when looking into further study or heading into the workplace.”
Regardless of what he chooses to do moving forward
his love for his culture and want to help the younger generation will remain
I just help out the kids and try to make things run as smoothly as possible.”
Heading into The Multicultural Game and Multicultural Festival on Sunday afternoon
Peter says it’s important for sporting clubs to hold events like these to showcase Australia’s diversity
It’s helping bring more diversity into basketball
“It’s not just about basketball
it’s about where you come from and what your background is
Everyone has a story to tell and everyone is coming in as one
so it’s a great thing to see happen.”
Tickets to The Multicultural Game remain on sale here.

Semariang and parts of Santubong in order to facilitate rescue efforts by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba)
SEB’s technical team from operations and retail arm Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO) was deployed to the scene and shut down power to the area for the rescue operation to be carried out safely
The suspect was taken to Sarawak General Hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries
preliminary investigation indicated that the pole’s copper earthing wires were already cut off at the scene at time of discovery
Also found at the scene were tools believed to have been used by the suspect in an attempt to steal cables
SESCO chief executive officer Lau Kim Swee in that statement said the latest incident showed that thieves were getting bolder every day
and reiterated the power utility’s safety reminder on the danger of close contact with electrical facilities and equipment
“Stealing cables is dangerous and can result in electrical flashovers or electrocution
This regretful incident is a tragic example to show potential thieves that it is truly not worth the risk
“I would like to remind everyone not to get too close if you are not authorised to do so
The safety clearance from overhead lines is at least 4.6m (15 feet),” he said
Expressing his concern over the frequency of cable theft cases
Lau said such cases could lead to tragic outcomes such as the recent incident
In addition to causing inconvenience to the community living in the surrounding area due to power interruptions
cable theft was dangerous to the thieves themselves
SEB has recorded more than 500 cases of copper cable thefts since 2015 despite an annual expenditure of over RM1 million in mitigation measures
cable theft alone has resulted in losses of nearly RM7 million to the company

A mother and her boyfriend have been charged with murder after they left 3-year-old twins home alone for eight hours
two counts of aggravated child abuse and two counts of child neglect
the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) said in a statement on Friday
Lee is not the biological father of the twins
Police said the investigation uncovered "a history of prolonged abuse and neglect," which contributed to the toddler's death and caused injuries to the surviving twin
GPD Sergeant John Pandak told Newsweek in an interview that both twins suffered numerous marks
He said the deceased twin's suspected cause of death is blunt force trauma
"The injuries to both children were similar
indicating a pattern of repeated physical beatings
GPD began investigating on September 1 after police and emergency medical services responded to a call regarding an "unresponsive" 3-year-old girl at a residence on Northwest 43rd Street in Gainesville
The victim was transported to the hospital where she was later pronounced deceased, GPD said in the statement, which was posted to the department's Facebook page
McLaughlin told police that she found the toddler "not breathing," after she took a nap and was woken up by Lee several hours later
GPD detectives determined that McLaughlin and Lee left the victim and her twin alone in the home for roughly 8 hours
McLaughlin and Lee both went to work and did not arrange for care for the toddlers
adding that the 3-year-olds weren't checked on at all while the couple was out
After returning back to the home hours later
McLaughlin and Lee found the victim unresponsive
Pandak told Newsweek that investigators uncovered surveillance video from where McLaughlin and Lee both worked in addition to cell phone searches
No food or water was left behind for the 3-year-olds while their mom and her boyfriend were away
adding that it was a "regular occurrence."
"Further investigation revealed a history of prolonged abuse and neglect, which contributed to the death of the one sibling and the injury to the other," GPD said
"The surviving sibling received treatment at a nearby hospital
GPD detectives believe the couple started abusing the twin girls before the family moved to Gainesville in April
knew about the long term neglectful and abusive treatment of these children and they failed to come forward," Pandak told Newsweek
"They were only in Gainesville for 3-4 months
McLaughlin and Lee abandoned their Gainesville apartment and "fled" to Atlanta
and the United States Marshals Service Regional Fugitive Task Force worked together to coordinate the arrest of McLaughlin and Lee in Atlanta
were not shared by GPD at the time of publication
The couple will be extradited from Georgia to the Alachua County Jail to await further judicial proceedings
Pandak told Newsweek that the surviving twin has been released from the hospital and is recovering in foster care

Nepal's top court has ordered a halt to commercial surrogacy services in the Himalayan nation until it rules on the legality of the practice
Nepal has become a destination for foreigners seeking to have children through surrogate mothers
with critics saying it exploits the poverty of women
Although Nepal has no laws on its books covering surrogacy
the government last year allowed foreign women to serve as surrogates in Nepal but barred local women
"There are no laws regarding surrogacy..
it raises many constitutional and legal questions," said Nahakul Subedi
"So the court issued a stay order on surrogacy services yesterday ..
until the case is settled," Subedi told AFP
who filed the original lawsuit against the practice
told AFP the court's order would put a stop to the registration of new cases
"Women should not be a subject of trade
"Nepali women are not allowed to be surrogate mothers but they are misrepresented as Indian and used for surrogacy," she said
Nepal has become an attractive destination for couples who find its services cheaper than those offered by surrogacy agencies in the west
Israel in April airlifted 25 infants born to Indian surrogate mothers in Kathmandu after Nepal was hit by a devastating quake that killed nearly 9,000 people
Gainesville Police are looking for the alleged gunman during a series of Wednesday night crimes that appear to have been drug related
of Gainesville should be considered armed and dangerous
according to Detectives John Pandak and Jon Rappa of the Tactical Impact Unit
Williams is wanted on charges that include carjacking
The detectives said Williams was one of three men who staged a carjacking and then kidnapped two people Wednesday afternoon from the 2000 block of NW 36th Avenue
The victims claimed Williams was carrying a gun as they were driven around town for several hours while their captors demanded they help find drugs and money
At some point one of the victims was forced into the trunk
but one of the victims - possibly acting out of fear - reportedly led the men to a drug dealer
Once the suspects got an unspecified amount of drugs
the victims said the suspects stopped the car on N
The victim in the trunk was released and both victims were left on the side of the road before the suspects drove off in the car that belonged to one of the victims
"(Williams) knows we are looking for him," Pandak said
"We want people to call 911 if they see him instead of trying to approach him because we consider him armed and dangerous."
Anyone with information about Williams is asked to call Pandak at 339-5949 or Rappa at 339-6408.
