Finding the perfect story for an audience is not easy
It’s always going to need a lot of research work
a talented crew working together using their instincts
This was exactly the case when it came to finding and filming the story of the Javan green magpie that we feature in Asia’s conservation episode
We wanted to make this episode feel very much in the moment
capturing real-life situations as they evolved in real time as much as possible – very different from the more flawless
slow-motion images usually seen in traditional natural history films
We wanted to cover the fact that forests across Indonesia are falling silent because of the trend for keeping songbirds as pets in cages
a hobby that has escalated to new heights with bird singing competitions that take place all across the country
In central Java this trade means that many songbirds are now threatened with extinction
taken from their forest homes to be sold as part of the illegal wildlife trade
How could we tell this story in a meaningful way
so that the audience could relate to the characters and issues
Could a scenario that’s so bleak become one that is watchable
began to focus on the work of a superb Javan field biologist
who is endeavouring to save the Javan green magpie
Panji and the conservation team at the Cikananga Wildlife Centre are caring for the last few of the species that remain in Java
trying to breed these extraordinary birds in captivity to ultimately be able to release a viable population back into the wild
there is currently no safe habitat where they won’t be poached again
so Panji’s work requires a deep understanding of the local culture to shift people’s perceptions – to help them value the birds in their natural environment
We thought about filming someone who makes an income from prize-winning songbirds and asked our brilliant fixer
to ask around and see if that might be possible
She soon arranged for us to meet a man who reportedly owned many songbirds
where we hoped to film Panji trying to understand the bird trade from the perspective of somebody who depended on it to make a living
As we entered Mr Neo’s property none of us knew what to expect
but his house was full of award-winning songbirds of many colours
even the kitchen and bathroom contained popular species of prized birds from floor to ceiling
at the back of the property there was a small cage containing a Javan green magpie
and with lumps in our throats just kept filming as Panji chatted with Mr Neo about all the birds
With eye contact alone we signalled to each other and kept rolling as Panji eventually gently asked about the Javan green magpie
and queried how the bird had ended up there
We were quite apprehensive; we weren’t sure quite how the owner would react as Panji told him of the rarity of this particular bird
It’s thought there could be as few as fifty left in the wild
but we instinctively knew what was being captured on camera
It’s a remarkable moment when Mr Neo realises that he has such a critically endangered bird in his custody
we still couldn’t quite believe that there was a Javan green magpie in a house in a suburban street in Yogyakarta
Although it wasn’t in our original plan
we made the decision with Panji that we must invite Mr Neo with us for the next day’s filming
where we were visiting a conservation project that’s been a big inspiration for Panji
and tourists and photographers flock from across Asia for the opportunity to capture photographs of wild birds
Tourism financially supports the whole village
and its residents take pride in the fact they live alongside rare birds
and see the value of keeping songbirds firmly in the wild
We put Mr Neo alongside a group of top bird photographers
We were able to film the sheer joy and delight in Mr Neo’s face as for the first time he saw the birds in their natural environment
And he realised that there are alternative ways of making a living from birds
but just appreciating them in a different way
It is very special capturing a once-in-a-lifetime moment like this on camera
and the dial shifts – it’s like seeing conservation happen in real time
Straight away Mr Neo agreed to give his Javan green magpie to Panji’s breeding centre at Cikananga
two percent of the population of the rarest and most beautiful bird was given a new lease of life; to help save its species in the breeding programme
and in the future to once again have the opportunity of living free in the wild
but cared for and protected by the local population
It was a wonderful coming together of Panji the dedicated conservationist
and an incredible character as a contributor
It’s not often that being there as a film crew really makes a difference for the better
At times during the making of this conservation episode it was quite depressing to realise and experience first-hand the extent of the biodiversity loss across Asia
Fingers crossed the audience loves this real-life tale of transformation as much as we do
A critically endangered bird finds hope as locals shift from poaching to conservation
The National Police on Thursday charged controversial Muslim cleric Panji Gumilang under the anti-money laundering law over allegations of raising funds using many aliases on behalf of his foundations
Panji is currently being detained in the West Java town of Indramayu after he was named a blasphemy suspect
following reports that his Islamic schools taught students against basic Islamic teachings and promoted an alternative interpretation of the Quran

the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS)
The revelation connecting Al Zaytun with the NII was brought to light by Heru Kismanto

Heru said in August that Al Zaytun functions as the headquarters of the NII
with all its employees being inducted as members of the separatist movement

Individuals assigned to work at Al Zaytun were carefully chosen
required to pledge allegiance [to the NII]
making every single employee a member of the NII," Heru said
"The NII required its members to pledge allegiance
and even allowed theft from non-members," he stated
revealing his own involvement in the theft of a donation box and audio system from a mosque in Tebet
which were later handed over to the movement

“It became almost my daily routine up until the day the publication closed in 2009; some called it ‘the beginning of the end of printed media,’ and I was starting to contribute to many fashion magazines and fashion clients,” Panji tells us
His work in fashion took a deviation during the pandemic
and he created the Cyclist Portrait Project
and the rise in cycling culture during the pandemic is exciting for me,” he relates
“I feel the urge to document this event as a lifestyle project
I began shooting the people who work on a bike also
making the project more of a social project to bring awareness of share the road spirit and promote healthy lifestyle and love for the environment.” This project helped Panji win the Hasselblad Masters Award
While that may make you think that he shoots with Hasselblad, he actually doesn’t. He’s used Mamiya, Canon, and Sony cameras for his work
His editorial work is done using the Leica SL2s
Panji goes for smaller cameras because he finds that bigger cameras frighten folks
The work is quite human for sure — and we couldn’t imagine an AI being prompted to make photographs like this
Panji doesn’t have much experience with AI at all
He jokes that he’s too lazy to generate the prompts
“This technology has become a taboo for many of my fellow photographer friends
especially those who grew up learning the hard way (shooting film
“But I think we need to embrace these new things
we need to adapt and learn how to make it work for us not the way around
where we need to solve problems for our client
not creating a personal project where we could maintain the purity of our work.” For the moment at least

HOME ARTICLES Is Indonesia’s Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding School Facing an Existential Threat
Panji Gumilang addresses his students prior to his formal charging and detention by Indonesian police on 1 August 2023
A'an Suryana
An Islamic boarding school and its principal are embroiled once again in controversy
maybe the public’s complaints will bite – but for how long
Will the pesantren survive this latest controversy
whose current enrolment stands at over 5,000 students from elementary through university levels
has had a high profile given its alleged links with NII but also its size and apparent wealth
of which 1,000 hectares are used for agriculture and farming
dorms and sports stadium are well above the standard of a typical pesantren
That the school’s leadership is politically well connected makes it a useful resource for prominent individuals
The school has been unscathed possibly due to political reasons
security officials keen on tackling extremism and terrorism built strategic ties with Al-Zaytun to challenge underground extremist movements
to BIN headquarters to persuade them to help to oppose NII members
between 25 and 50 per cent of the total votes cast are needed to win a seat in the national parliament.)
In return, the powers that be may have provided Al-Zaytun with social and political protection when the school was under public pressure. For example, following rumours that the school still had links with the NII, Hendropriyono, as chief of BIN, publicly stated in 2003 that he “would beat up” anybody who harassed or threatened Al-Zaytun
He argued that Al-Zaytun had discarded NII’s ideas and struggle for an Islamic state and had chosen to conform to the values of the Indonesian state
The delay of several weeks between the public’s initial complaints to the police about Panji Gumilang and his naming as a suspect demonstrates a possible political tug-of-war between the security apparatus and government officials
even if the charges hold and a court sentences Panji to jail
these actions will not end the controversy surrounding Al-Zaytun
Panji is likely to return to the school once he finishes his jail term
In the eyes of mainstream Muslim organisations like Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah
he has a penchant for making incorrect religious innovations (bid’ah)

Indonesian police arrested the leader of an Islamic boarding school on blasphemy and hate-speech charges Wednesday after Muslim groups accused him of un-Islamic practices such as allowing mixed-gender prayer
Police said their investigation had found evidence of alleged blasphemy by Panji Gumilang, the head of the Al Zaytun school in West Java, who faces a maximum 10 years in prison if found guilty.
One human rights group criticized the blasphemy law as violating religious freedom and said its use ahead of the February 2024 election appeared to cater to conservative elements of the electorate in the Muslim-majority country.
The police said they had questioned Panji, 77, and examined videos of his speeches and lectures. Investigators also gathered statements from witnesses and experts.
“We have designated him as a suspect and will detain him for the next 20 days,” national police spokesman Ahmad Ramadhan told reporters.
Authorities did not specify what Panji had said or done that constituted blasphemy. But they said they were acting on a complaint filed by a group called the Forum of Advocates for Pancasila.
Pancasila is Indonesia’s state ideology, which espouses belief in one god, humanity, unity, democracy and justice.
The group’s leader, Ihsan Tanjung, said he had submitted 15 videos as evidence, including clips of Panji allegedly saying that the Quran comprised the words of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam.
“That is very insulting and constitutes deviant teaching,” Ihsan told BenarNews. “It is very disturbing and can cause hostility.”
According to Islamic belief, the Quran is God’s speech revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
Ihsan said other offending videos included one that allegedly showed Panji teaching his students to sing a Jewish song “Hevenu Shalom Aleichem,” and another showing him leading a prayer with men and women in the same row, which is against Islamic norms.
“All the videos we handed over to the police can create unrest and hatred,” Ihsan said.
He had earlier told the Liputan6 news website that the mixed-gender prayer was a way to give women equal rights.
“Women deserve equal rights. So, we make them equal, because it’s the right thing to do,” he was quoted as saying.
Defense lawyer Hendra Effendi said he would seek a stay of his client’s detention and file a pretrial motion to challenge his arrest. He said Panji should be released on humanitarian grounds.
“He is too old at 77,” Hendra said, adding his client also has health issues.
Hendra denied that Panji had committed blasphemy or taught anything that deviated from Islam.
“His teachings are only based on the Quran and the Sunnah,” which are the practices of Muhammad, he said.
The human rights group Setara Institute said the blasphemy law was often used to prosecute religious minorities and dissenters.
“The government is pandering to the whims and sentiment of conservative groups, especially in an election year,” said Halili Hasan, the group’s executive director.
Indonesia is scheduled to hold presidential and legislative elections on Feb. 14, 2024.
Halili also said that Panji’s case would set a bad precedent for religious freedom in the country.
“The blasphemy law will keep leading to the persecution of people under blasphemy charges as long as it is in use,” he said.
A case that attracted global attention was the 2017 sentencing of Jakarta’s former Christian Gov. Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama for blaspheming Islam.
A now-banned group called the Islamic Defenders’ Front (FPI) led a campaign against Ahok over allegations that he had insulted the Quran after an edited video made it appear that he had said Islam’s holy book deceived people.
This spurred thousands of Muslims to hold protests against him in the run-up to a gubernatorial election in Jakarta, in which he was a front-runner. Ahok lost that election and later served his two-year prison sentence.
According to the Setara Institute, blasphemy cases have surged since Joko “Jokowi” Widodo became president in 2014, reaching 122 cases by 2022.
By contrast, Setara said there were only 57 cases recorded from 1998, when Indonesia began its democratic transition after 32 years of iron-fisted rule, until 2013.
Panji’s arrest was welcomed by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), a semi-official body of clerics, which had recently issued a fatwa, or religious edict, stating that his teachings were blasphemous.
“The fatwa that we delivered to the police also verified that he [Panji] had committed blasphemy,” said Amirsyah Tambunan, the MUI secretary.
Still, Panji’s school, Al Zaytun, should not be shut down because of its leader’s arrest, said Zainut Tauhid, an MUI deputy chairman.
“The next step is for the government to take charge of [Al Zaytun] and offer guidance,” he said.
Panji has been a controversial figure in Indonesia for decades.
He has been accused of having ties to the Islamic State of Indonesia (NII), a rebel group that sought to establish an Islamic state in Indonesia shortly after its independence in 1945.
He founded Al Zaytun in 1996 as an alternative educational institution that aimed to produce Muslim leaders who could compete globally. Over the years, high-ranking officials and politicians have visited the school.
Al Zaytun has faced scrutiny from religious authorities and former members of NII, which analysts have said has spawned militant offshoots such as Jemaah Islamiyah, the group blamed for a series of deadly bombings in Indonesia in the 2000s.

Bhubaneswar: Controversy over the date of Saraswati Puja celebration has put people in doubt. Yet again, there are allegations of errors in the Panji (Hindu calendar or almanac).
There is a controversy over whether the holy occasion of Saraswati Puja will be observed on the auspicious date of February 2 or February 3. Different calendars have different dates, this is where the controversy arises.
The Radharaman Panjika, approved by the Muktimandap Pandit Sabha of Shrimandir, mentions Basant Utsav and Ratha wood (chariot log) anukula in the Shrimandir on both February 2 and February 3.
However according to the reason given by the scriptures, the Saraswati Puja date and Ratha katha anukula should be held on the February 3.
According to the scriptures, Saraswati Puja and Ratha Katha anukula should be held on fifth (panchami) and sixth (sashti) joint Tithi. On the other hand, as per the approval and advice of the Shankaracharyas of the four pithas, the Kumbh Mela Sahisnan is being held on February 3.
However a Panjika commentator said that such a conflict is caused by the mistakes of the temple administration and the Muktimandap Pandit Sabha of the temple.
However according to latest update of the ‘Niti Prasasaka’ of the Jagannath temple a clarification has been issued that the holy occasion of Saraswati Puja shall be held on February 2 (Sunday)

Jakarta. Two years after starring in the Citra-winning drama "Siti," artist Sekar Sari is currently making her own documentary film on ancient literature and dance drama, after finishing a master's thesis on the same subject.
The documentary, currently untitled and still on the editing table, is a follow up to her master's thesis "Stage Life and Daily Life," a comparative study of gender representation and characterization in Javanese Panji stories.
Panji is a collection of classic stories from the kingdom of Kediri in East Java, which by the time the kingdom was gone had also spread to Bali, Kalimantan, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar and the Philippines.
Panji stories were preserved in the Majapahit era, hundreds of years after Kediri was destroyed.
Speaking to the Jakarta Globe before the closing ceremony of the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival on Dec. 3, Sekar said her research into the Panji stories was deeply rewarding and flamed even more her passion in the arts, particularly dance and film.
Sekar has a master's degree on dance knowledge, practice and heritage from the Erasmus Mundus program, which she finished earlier this year.
"I didn't plan to make a documentary from my own thesis, but I took so many interesting clips, so I decided to turn them into a film," she said.
Sekar said that other than acting, dance always holds a special place in her heart. Dance also involves an element of role playing, and she believes acting and dancing can be two sides of the same coin.
"I can never choose between acting and dancing. I think they have to go hand in hand, at least for me. Both require me to work on my body and my mental state, " she said.
Sekar plans to release her documentary in 2017, while also keeping herself busy with other projects.
The winner of the best actor prize at the 2014 Singapore International Film Festival for her leading role in Siti said she keeps looking for opportunities to expand the boundaries of film by venturing into other forms of art, especially traditional and contemporary dance.
She recently performed in the dance drama "Pada Suatu Rumah" (Coming Back Home) at the Galeri Indonesia Kaya in South Jakarta.
The drama incorporated contemporary dance numbers written by Sekar and Iwan Dadijono, live music by Gardika Gigih and art videos by Faozan Rizal to portray a complex relationship between a father and his daughter.
"It was my attempt to offer something beyond the fixed boundaries of acting and dancing," she said.
