Firefighters successfully captured a large monitor lizard that had wandered into a neighborhood in the South Sulawesi town of Parepare on Saturday
measuring approximately 2 meters in length and weighing around 15 kilograms
created panic in a housing complex in Lapadde
Residents claimed the reptile had been preying on pets and chickens
prompting them to call the fire department
The capture operation drew a large crowd as residents watched the drama unfold
the monitor lizard evaded capture by retreating into an underground water tunnel
“We used a pipe to force it out and managed to capture it in an open area,” said Muhtar
This may be the largest and oldest monitor lizard we’ve ever caught.”
The fire department plans to release the reptile in a forested area far from human settlements to ensure it does not return to residential areas
monitor lizards can range from less than 20 centimeters to over 3 meters in length
These reptiles are carnivorous and opportunistic feeders
are semi-aquatic and can thrive in urban areas
where they may scavenge for food in trash or hunt smaller animals
monitor lizards are generally shy and prefer to avoid human contact
their presence in populated areas can lead to conflicts
especially when they target livestock or pets
itb.ac.id — Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) through the Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (FMAE) was entrusted to lead the development research team of Merah Putih Highspeed Railway (MRHR)
The train will operate on Makassar to Parepare route during its initial stage
which later will be integrated with the Trans-Sulawesi railway
ITB was officially appointed to lead the research team
The appointment was officiated through an agreement note signing on the 17th of July 2022 by PT INKA
including Institut Teknologi Bandung represented by the Dean of FMAE ITB
The researcher consortium had successfully obtained research funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture through the Matching Fund scheme
The construction of the Merah Putih Highspeed Railway (MRHR) will mark Indonesia's concrete step toward achieving the Indonesian Economy Acceleration and Development Expansion Masterplan (EADEM) to overcome its problems and become a developed country and being in the ten largest economies in the world by 2025
the Makassar-Parepare Highspeed Railway project is a part of the government plan to increase the number of train tracks in Indonesia
which currently stands at 6000 km and is targeted to reach 10,000 km by 2030
MRHR will operate on the Makassar-Parepare route
extending 140 km and going through 7 stations
Different from previous operating trains in Indonesia
The Makassar-Parepare train integrated the light
The smart concept represented the communication and information system
utilizing the latest technology that allows the train to self-drive through the tracks and stops at destination stations
The light concept indicates the train's lightweight construction
It will be made of aluminum and fiber composite materials
differing from steel-based conventional trains
The basis of 'hybrid' is its electricity-powered nature
which is produced by the diesel machine and stored in the battery
This design consideration was caused by the condition of electricity supplies in Sulawesi
which could not provide the electric network needed for the train's full-electric operation
MRHR will be designed to operate with a maximum speed of 220 km/hour and thus can be classified as a high-speed railway
Even if at first the train can only operate at 200 km/hour
MRHR will be easily upgraded to operate at higher speeds (350 km/hour)
ITB sent five research teams from the FMAE setting consisting of:-MRHR Static fatigue Carbody team (Prof
Ichsan Setya Putra),-MRHR Static fatigue and dynamics Bogie team (Dr
Yunendar Aryo Handoko),-MRHR Crashworthiness team (Prof
Tatacipta Dirgantara),-MRHR aerodynamics team (Dr
Pramudita Satria Palar) and-MRHR floor material and insulation team (Dr
The five teams work together to design and analyze the train body
the research teams finished the planning and calculation
although they still needed optimization on some parts of the train
The planning and calculation result is ready to be used for the prototyping stage by PT INKA
the prototype will operate on the Makassar-Parepare route by late 2023
Looking at Indonesia's geographic condition
trains represent a profitable mode of transportation in Indonesia
The construction of new train tracks will continue in regions such as Sumatera and Sulawesi
alongside the development of other train types in Indonesia
Train projects have been considered contributive and supportive towards accelerating and expanding Indonesia's economic development in various regions
Metrics details
Micronutrient deficiencies among pregnant women remain highly prevalent in low and middle-income countries
Multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) has been proven more beneficial than standard iron-folic acid supplementation in reducing adverse pregnancy outcomes
Limited data on adherence to MMS in pregnant women in programmatic settings is available
our study aims to assess adherence to the recommended intake of a multiple micronutrient supplement (UNIMMAP-MMS) in relation to demographic characteristics alongside a community-based MMS program
A prospective longitudinal study was performed in the Parepare district
MMS was provided at the first antenatal care visit and women were followed up until delivery
the start of MMS intake and information regarding possible intake determinants were recorded
Binary logistic regression was used to assess associations between characteristics of women and adherence
Among the 655 women (53.9%) who started MMS intake in the first trimester
approximately 90% continued using MMS in the following trimesters and 75.3% consumed MMS ≥ 90 tablets
Among the 41.2% of women who started in the second trimester
90% continued intake in the third trimester and 32.3% consumed ≥ 90 tablets
Only 4.9% started MMS in the third trimester
Factors that impacted MMS intake were pregnancy interval ≤ 2y (AOR = 0.65
start of MMS use in the second trimester and third trimester (AOR = 0.15
2.00) and experiencing no side effects (AOR = 3.46
Implementation of MMS via community health centers resulted in high adherence once supplementation started
attention to antenatal visit planning earlier in pregnancy can be further improved
We therefore investigated the adherence to MMS alongside the community-based MMS initiative by recruiting and follow up women in the Parepare district in Indonesia after MMS introduction via the community health care system
The data allow exploration of factors that potentially affect adherence and would provide early insights into possible barriers
this information can be useful for stakeholders to optimize the utilization of the MMS program as a part of routine ANC in further large-scale nationwide implementation programs
This prospective longitudinal study was conducted in Parepare
Indonesia from August 2021 to November 2022
This medium urban area is approximately 99.3 km2 in size with a population density of 1.530 per km2; most of the population (78.9%) works in the services sector
and only 4.3% works in the agriculture sector
has four hospitals and eight community health centers (puskesmas)
A puskesmas is a major source of primary health care
Antenatal care services (ANC) are provided by midwives and regular visits are scheduled every month
Information related to the pregnancy is recorded in the Maternal and Child Health Book (MCHB)
The start of our study coincided with the start of the local MMS implementation program to replace IFA supplementation in Parepare
The MMS program has been integrated into ANC services at the puskesmas level
Participants were identified from antenatal records which were available in community health center facilities
The inclusion criteria were women who were willing to consume MMS
Women who had started MMS before inclusion were also allowed to participate if the start of MMS use was documented in the MCHB
The former was determined by asking these women during the first ANC whether they wanted to consume the MMS and participate in this study
whereas the latter was determined by checking the remaining tablets in their current prescription bottle to check intake up to the recruitment visit
Participating women were required to be planning to stay in the town during pregnancy
As not all pregnant women had the same gestational age at the time of their first ANC visit
the recruitment was done at any gestational age
The late MMS introduction for part of the included population was partly explained by the prevailing covid 19 pandemic
during which the government imposed restrictions for health care visits and only allowed pregnant women who were experiencing complication or serious symptoms to seek face to face medical attention
All women were then followed up from enrolment until delivery
Written informed consent was obtained from all participants
Data were collected through a paper-based structured questionnaire (Supplementary file 1) after which the data were entered into a corresponding electronic version of the questionnaire on mobile devices
These devices were regularly synchronized with the secure database constructed using REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture
Data collection was performed by midwives who underwent a comprehensive training program
the topics addressed thorough understanding and familiarity with the questionnaire content
and ensuring data accuracy and completeness
a practical exercise was provided to ensure that the midwives were well prepared for data collection process
Two midwives were assigned to each community health center facility
They started data collection by identifying potential participants from the registered cohort record
which contained brief information about pregnant women attending ANC in the community
Midwives were chosen to perform data collection because they were frontline in delivering services to pregnant women and also were in close contact with them
To ensure data was collected correctly and timely
the researcher performed weekly supervision and regularly visited the midwives
This involved randomly re-interviewing a few pregnant women who had already been interviewed by midwives as well as cross-checking their data as recorded in the MCHB
The MMS, provided by the Vitamin Angels organization (https://vitaminangels.org) to Hasanuddin University
The distribution of the MMS tablets was incorporated into the existing antenatal care program
Women were recruited into the study between August 2021 and November 2022
During the ANC visit at which participants were enrolled
midwives provided 30 tablets of MMS in a bottle and the women were instructed to take one tablet each day
The gestational age at start of MMS consumption was recorded in the MCHB
The pregnant women were asked to record the date when they took the first MMS on their MCHB and to bring back the bottle during the next ANC visit to be replenished with another 30 tablets
the number of tablets consumed was verified before replenishment by the midwives by comparing the number of tablets indicated in the MCHB with the number of remaining tablets in the bottle
If there was a discrepancy between the number of missing tablets from the bottle and what was recorded in the MCHB
the calculation would be based on missing tablets
The duration of MMS exposure was determined by the gestational age of pregnant women at first time of consuming MMS until the gestational age at third trimester when the interview was done
The total number of MMS consumed were counted by the number of missing tablets from the bottle and categorized into adherence if at least 90 tablets were consumed and as non-adherence if less than 90 tablets
Data used in this study was obtained from direct interviews with the participants in the third trimester and from the maternal and child health handbook (MCHB) which contains health records of pregnant women and their babies
The former data include water and sanitation
The latter covered the mother’s characteristics such as occupation
and anthropometrics of mother and newborns
A structured questionnaire was used to obtain these data
head circumference of newborn were obtained by asking the women to take a photograph of the relevant page in the MCHB and sending it to midwives via WhatsApp
variables that could be associated with MMS intake adherence including maternal age
side effects and health insurance ownership were assessed
The sample size calculation for the cohort was not based on adherence
but on the estimated difference in MMS consumption between low birthweight and normal birthweight children
we used the following assumptions: estimated proportion of low birthweight was 5% and an effect size for MMS consumption of 0.4 to 0.5
With a 5% two-sided alpha level we would have 80% power to detect this effect size
indicating lower MMS exposure in low birthweight children
with a minimum of 1260 mother-infant pairs
60 low birthweight children and 1200 normal weight children
Data were analyzed using SPPS Statistics for windows version 28.0
and standard deviation was calculated to describe participants’ characteristics
We performed bivariate analysis to assess the association between adherence and each independent variable
multivariable logistic regression was performed to examine the factors that independently associated with adherence
Variables with p values < 0.05 were included in the multivariable model
Among 1216 pregnant women who consumed MMS, 53.9% started MMS in the first trimester, 41.2% started in the second trimester and only 4.9% delayed start taking MMS into the third trimester (Table 1)
The mean age of the participants was 27.9 years
Most participants were between 20 and 30 years old
there were no clear differences among the first
second and third MMS started groups for any of the characteristics
Percentage of women based on trimester of start of MMS intake (x-axis) and percentage of women continuing MMS intake during subsequent trimesters (y-axis)
The percentage of women per trimester according to the total number of MMS consumed
Associations between participant characteristics and adherence are summarized in (Table 2)
In the multivariable logistic regression analysis
variables significantly associated with adherence (p < 0.05) on univariable analysis were included
a shorter inter-pregnancy duration and late MMS introduction were negatively associated with adherence
whereas being overweight and experiencing no side effects had a positive association with adherence
Women with previous pregnancy duration ≤ 2y were 35% (AOR = 0.65
0.92) less likely to be adherent than those with longer pregnancy interval
Participants who started taking MMS in the second and third trimester were 85% (AOR = 0.15
0.04) less likely to be adherent than those in the first trimester
being overweight was 44% more likely to be adherent (AOR = 1.44
participants experiencing no side effects were 3.46 times more likely to be adherent than another (AOR = 3.46
late MMS introduction was the highest risk factor for non-adherence
As the effect of the MMS introduction was strong
we performed a separate analysis for each trimester
and the findings showed a slightly different result between two groups concerning the variables associated with adherence
shorter inter-pregnancy duration and experiencing side effects were associated with non-adherence
only the mother’s occupation was related to non-adherence with MMS use (Supplementary file 1)
monitoring MMS implementation in the community health care system
women’s adherence with the 90-day MMS intake recommendation was 53.9%
Women who initiated MMS consumption earlier during their pregnancy were more likely to take it consistently and demonstrated higher adherence
being overweight and not experiencing any side effects were associated with a higher adherence rate
delayed initiation of MMS and shorter pregnancy intervals were associated with a decreased adherence
One possible explanation could be the RCT setting
involving community facilitators and local health workers to do home visits to distribute
the present study investigated MMS intake in a real-world observational setting
where delivery of MMS relied more on the frequency of ANC service contacts as MMS was only available in community health centers
This approach likely reflects the actual setting outside a clinical research study setting more accurately
the first ANC planned within the first trimester of pregnancy should be used to initiate MMS intake as this may drive higher total intakes
The absence of an association in the latter study was attributed to inadequate supplement availability which was not the case in the current study
health workers play an important role in effectively communicating the benefits during counseling of pregnant women early in pregnancy to ensure the information is understood
This can be achieved through in-person meetings during ANC visit or by sending regular reminders via mobile phone
given the widespread cellphones usage among pregnant women
The strengths of the study include the prospective design coupled with the measurement of adherence based on the number of MMS missing from the bottle provided during ANC visits and the note taken from the recorded maternal health book
This approach provided a relatively reliable method compared to adherence measurements which rely on the women’s recall/memory
These current findings may also be of interest to stakeholders who plan to implement an MMS supplementation program in their region
Our study also had some limitations including monitoring focus on implementation in an urban setting
that may not represent or predict any outcomes at a national level
these findings cannot be generalized to all pregnant women in Indonesia
Further study on MMS should encompass broader geographical regions with a more representative population
This will help to provide insights and generalize results that may contribute to a better understanding of the potential barriers of the MMS program before large-scale implementation
qualitative studies may be necessary to gain a more holistic understanding of underlying causes of non adherence
The potential learnings from this observational study are that it might be quite relevant to encourage women to do antenatal care visits as early as possible
This will allow women to get access to the MMS supplement
education and support as early as possible and for the health care worker to be able to explain that nausea and vomiting are normal effects that commonly exist during early pregnancy and should not delay supplementation
the present study findings may serve as a starting point for the development of large-scale intervention trials in urban areas to increase adherence
Implementing MMS program to pregnant women via health centers during standard ANC visits resulted in high adherence once supplementation was started
A high percentage of women (75.3%) successfully achieved an intake of ≥ 90 tablets during pregnancy
especially those who started intake during the first trimester

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A large crowd gathered at the True love Monument of Habibie Ainun in Parepare, South Sulawesi on Wednesday night of September 11 after news of former president BJ Habibie’s passing was announced nationwide
Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie passed away at the army hospital (RSPAD) Gatot Subroto in Jakarta
According to one local resident of Parepare who gathered at the monument Sekar Ayu Eka
the third Indonesian president will truly remain as a role model and figure of inspiration for fellow countrymen
we all share the loss of a figure we often call eyang Habibie,” said Eka to Tempo on Wednesday
She recalled locals immediately packed the “true love monument Habibie Ainun” following the news of his death
This location is a known monument to remember the tight-knit relationship between Habibie and wife Ainun
“The Parepare administration promises to realize the dreams of Pak Habibie upon establishing a museum at his city of birth,” she said
recalled Habibie as one of Indonesia’s best that will always be missed
He asserts that the news of his passing is deeply mourned by locals
as he inspired the establishment of this true love monument,” said Ahmad about the love story between the two that has inspired many since Ainun’s passing
As previously reported, at around 18:05 Indonesia Western Time (WIB) BJ Habibie succumbed to heart failure at the age of 83 while under the medical supervision of medical experts at the army hospital (RSPAD) Gatot Subroto

recounts her harrowing experience during this year's Hajj pilgrimage
she found herself evading the police in Saudi Arabia
Syamsinar is among hundreds of Hajj pilgrims from Sidrap Regency
who were denied entry upon arrival at King Abdul Aziz Airport on June 14 for using visit visas instead of the required Hajj visas
eager to fulfill their religious duties in Mecca
were thus unable to proceed with their journey
Syamsinar and her fellow pilgrims were not provided with the promised facilities by their travel agency
they faced the bitter reality of being scammed
claimed they were abandoned upon arrival in Saudi Arabia
The travel agency had promised them hajj visas
but what they received were multiple-entry or visit visas
Syamsinar had to constantly avoid the police in Saudi Arabia
they always covered the biometric information
so we didn’t know what type of visa it was," Syamsinar told Beritasatu.com on Thursday
Syamsinar only discovered that the visa provided by the travel agency was a multiple-entry visa upon arriving at the airport or shortly before the flight to Jakarta
Even the name tags they received were incorrect
It was still safe in Medina," she said
Syamsinar protested to the travel agency because the promised eight days of preparation in Medina turned out to be only five days
stating she was forbidden to enjoy the facilities provided by the travel agency
"I am a victim because I feel cheated and wronged
forbidding me from eating the travel food and enjoying the travel facilities
Yet I paid in full one month before departure," Syamsinar lamented
Syamsinar and several other pilgrims reported the Al Hijrah travel agency in Barru
some of us who passed through Barru stopped at the Barru Police Station
My hope is that there are no more victims," she said
The Indonesian Religious Affairs Ministry has strictly prohibited its citizens from embarking on the Hajj pilgrimage without the proper Hajj visas. Violations could lead to severe penalties including fines
and bans from returning to Saudi Arabia for up to 10 years

Jakarta - Indonesia's third president Bacharuddin Jusuf (BJ) Habibie passed away on Wednesday at 6:05 p.m
after being in intensive care at Gatot Subroto Army Hospital in Jakarta since Sunday
His second-born son Thareq Kemal Habibie said Tuesday that his father was starting to get stable after intensive treatment for exhaustion from his packed activities
But fate had other plans for BJ Habibie
The genius who created Indonesia's first self-made aircraft died at the age 83 Wednesday afternoon
BJ Habibie's health had increasingly deteriorated since he underwent surgery in Munich Germany
to treat a leakage in the heart valve prosthesis early March 2018
he never fully recovered mentally or physically from his grief at losing his beloved wife Ainun Habibie in 2010
He will be buried next to his soulmate Ainun's grave at the Heroes Cemetery
BJ Habibie was the fourth son of eight children of Alwi Abdul Jalil Habibie and Tuti Marini Puspowadjojo
following his religious family background in Parepare
where his grandfather was an Islamic cleric
Habibie was one of the founders of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI) and became its patron
Habibie went to Christian Dago High School in Bandung
and then completed his higher education at the Technology Faculty of the University of Indonesia in Bandung (now Bandung Institute of Technology) in 1954
Habibie went abroad to study aviation technology majoring in aircraft construction at RWTH Aachen
He graduated and received his Ingenieur diploma in 1960 and became an Ingenieur doctor in 1965 with the highest honors
Habibie stayed in Germany after his graduation and worked at Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm
While he spent most of his adult life overseas
Habibie's love for his motherland never faded
Even after he received honorary German citizenship for his achievements in aviation technology
he returned home in 1973 when second President Soeharto asked him to work and develop Indonesia with his expertise
Then, he was appointed a director at PT Dirgantara Indonesia -- Indonesia's state-owned aviation industry
Soeharto then appointed Habibie as Minister of Research and Technology in 1978
He occupied that position consecutively until 1997
Habibie created the first Indonesian aircraft CN 25 Gatot Kaca that had been manufactured by PT Dirgantara Indonesia
Habibie was a pioneer in the Indonesian aviation industry as his aircraft had shown the world that Indonesia could move towards an industrial era from being mainly labelled as an agrarian country
his career skyrocketed when the people's assembly (MPR) chose him to be Soeharto's vice president
people's power forced Soeharto to step down after nearly 33 years in administration
Soeharto announced his resignation as president
where Indonesia had a severe economic crisis with huge inflation coupled with unstable domestic politics and security
But BJ Habibie succeeded in elevating Indonesia from virtual bankruptcy to a relatively safer fundamental economy within only a year and five months of his administration
Indonesia had also started regulating the regional autonomy that changed a centralized system into a decentralized one
a multi-party election was allowed after more than 30 years of Soeharto's regime controlled it to only three parties
He wrote a long love letter to his late wife as a catharsis for his loss after she died in 2010
and it was published and became one of Indonesia’s best-selling books
Their love story was also made into at least three movies that still inspire many Indonesians
but his legacies will remain forever in the hearts of the children of the nation

HOME ARTICLES State Complicity in Religious Intolerance under the Widodo Administration

Religious intolerance against minority faiths is a thorn in the body politic of Indonesia that each president has not been able to fully extract
It does not help when local officials confuse or overstep the bounds of their authority
instead of protecting their religious rights
(Shi’a is a branch of Islam and its adherents are a minority in predominantly Sunni Indonesia.)
The school chain’s attorney, Rachmat S. Lulung, argued that the construction process had followed all the requirements
including obtaining a Building Permit Approval (Persetujuan Bangunan Gedung
or PBG) and recommendations from the local departments of Education
Despite the legality of the project, Parepare councillors ordered the Public Order Agency (Satuan Polisi Pamong Praja, Satpol PP) to halt the construction project. Ibrahim Suanda, Chairperson of Working Group III in the Parepare DPRD
claimed that this decision was based on the result of a hearing on 20 September with various community elements
including the Parepare Muslim Community Forum (Forum Masyarakat Muslim Parepare
and advocates the protection of minority groups’ rights within society
supporting the stance that these rights carry equal legal weight as those of the majority
The state’s complicity in religious intolerance lie in political and security motivations
while it can provide a recommendation to the local government (Pemerintah Daerah
Pemda) which respects the latter’s executive capacity
The revocation of the school’s permit should be the local government’s task
Similar incidents have affected Muslims in areas where they are a minority. For example, in 2018, the local government and legislative council in Manokwari
approved a bylaw banning all religious adherents other than Christians “from doing activities every Sunday”
This regulation negatively impacted Muslims
Hindus and other non-Christians who wished to practice their religion or organise public religious events on Sunday
The state’s complicity in religious intolerance lies in political and security motivations
often succumbed to political pressures from local residents
a local councillor decided to fight against the construction of the Christian school after protests by local residents
state security apparatuses prioritised public security over human rights
State complicity in religious intolerance remained a persistent issue under the Widodo administration
can perhaps improve the situation by establishing a new and independent state institution that could investigate
and prevent future intolerant practices against any minority faith across the archipelago

Protests mounted by a local politician in Pare-Pare against the opening of a new school. The Gamaliel School's Foundation: We have all the permits and our classes are open to students of all denominations. Muslim influencer in defence of the school appeals to President Joko Widodo: ‘Show that unity in diversity paraded in front of Pope Francis are not just words’
Jakarta (AsiaNews) - Some local radical Muslims are promoting a new wave of protests against the establishment of a Christian school in the town of Pare-Pare
The group calls itself the Forum of the Muslim Society of Parepare (FM2P) and accuses the Gamaliel School's Foundation of not having the legal basis to build an educational service in the sub-district of Watang Soreang
The protest was taken to the local government headquarters (DPRD) last Friday
with the aim of having the permits granted by the Pare-Pare authority revoked
Citing a 2021 regulation of the Indonesian Ministry of Education
they claim that ‘any Christian educational institution is only allowed to be built where there is no public rejection’
’there are still many schools whose student numbers are still below expectations
The Gamaliel School's Foundation replies by pointing out that all requirements have been fully met and completed by October 2023
also recalled how this Christian school is an inclusive educational institution
‘open to all Indonesian students’
is also publicly supporting the protesters' disagreement
citing the fact that the school is located in a Muslim-majority area
appealing to President Joko Widodo by recalling Pope Francis' visit a few weeks ago
‘President Jokowi,’ he wrote on social media
’please show your power to protect our Bhinneka Tunggal Ika
the spirit of the nation in ensuring unity in diversity
which you publicly upheld in front of the pontiff
it will mean that they were just empty words'

George Washington University blocked off most outdoor campus spaces on May 9
2024 after clearing out an anti-Israel encampment from the Washington
Photos taken by The Algemeiner show tall fencing surrounding University Yard (U-Yard)
where the almost two-week-long encampment protest took place
The company that installed the fencing has been used by the US Capitol to erect fencing in recent years
It is the primary grassy area on campus and is surrounded by multiple academic buildings — which were largely closed by GW amid the encampment
causing some classes and even finals to be canceled
Kogan Plaza has been fenced off since the beginning of the encampment on April 25
All three entrances remain barricaded and security ensures nobody breaches the barricades
Kogan Plaza is where many significant university events take place
It is also surrounded by the Gelman Library and includes a popular study space
The fence surrounding Anniversary Park has also been closed and pad-locked
The only major outdoor space not completely closed to students is Square 80
U-Yard and Kogan Plaza will remain closed through commencement
but it is likely to prevent a re-occupation of any major university space
Such fears may have arisen due to the persistence of the protesters as they were being cleared out and even afterward
Within 48 hours of clearing the encampment
its organizers have already planned or carried out three new protests
At approximately 3:00 am on Wednesday, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) raided the anti-Israel encampment
did not allow the encampment to be cleared — despite a request to do so from GW — citing bad optics
the encampment broke school rules and was unlawful from the beginning
It also became increasingly hostile and volatile
Videos showed protesters calling for the execution of Granberg
They also raised the Palestinian flag over U-Yard and desecrated a statue of George Washington
“Harassing and degrading people based on their beliefs or background, assaulting police officers, illegally occupying and destroying university property, and displaying violent imagery and language are simply unacceptable,” Granberg said in a statement on Wednesday
the MPD moved in to arrest those who did not leave
at least two officers used pepper spray while confronting those breaking school rules and the law
“We are also grateful for MPD’s continued assistance and the tireless efforts of our GWPD
