Pati Jinich teaches the ins and outs of documenting recipes
If you’re a fervent home cook with a stellar repertoire
friends have probably begged for that famous mac and cheese recipe or your extra-special secret to the best chicken soup
But have you ever considered actually gathering your collection of worn recipe cards and assembling them into a real cookbook
There are plenty of reasons to try it: You can preserve family favorites as an heirloom for your loved ones
you can hard-launch a self-publishing journey
You can draw on your own experience in the kitchen or go out into the world to learn about new-to-you cuisines
But you may be wondering how to actually do the thing: formulating and testing recipes
developing your own culinary point of view
and even telling stories about the dishes you love
so she was brimming with practical advice for beginners
We went over her top tips for getting started
Pati Jinich: I really wish that somebody had given me a manual before I did the pitches for all my cookbooks. The pitch for my first cookbook was rejected 39 times — and I consider my first cookbook to have been very successful
and I feel like if I had known everything that I know now
it would’ve made the process so much easier.
How did you get it in the stores?” And what about people that want to preserve their family recipes
What about people that want to preserve their recipes from their communities
I really put down everything I learned in regards to putting together a cookbook and getting it out in the world.
I remember when I was pitching my first cookbook about Mexican food
“There’s already too many Mexican cookbooks out there
You have to know what sets yours apart.”
What I was really passionate about was Mexican home cooking
I saw many of the Mexican cookbooks that existed out there
and it didn’t feel like the food that I knew to be true Mexican
There were quite a few cookbooks out there for Mexican cooking that were punishing in tone: “If you can’t get these chiles from the mountain
then you’re not going to be making true Mexican food.” I’d rather you make enchiladas at home
farmer’s cheese or a mild feta will do
I’d rather you make new things in your kitchen and get acquainted with Mexican cooking
I think that’s really instilled in How To Write a Cookbook — you have to be true to yourself and what you’re passionate about
It needs to be something that you’re almost obsessed with that you want to share with the world
It can be as defined and specialized as you want
It’s not about what people expect you to do or want you to do
You want to have a clear vision because if not
Then I walk people through what they want to do with their book
Is it something that you want to do because you want to sell it
And then it goes from the big idea to step by step
You need an idea of how big it’s going to be
It’s important these days to tell stories with the recipes
You don’t want to get a cookbook that gives you no background
I recommend that you make a recipe list before you get started
Say you want to do a book on Greek cooking and you really want it to be balanced
But once you start writing all the recipes
you realize you have too many chicken recipes in there
“Do I want to write a cookbook about Greek chicken recipes?” And if not
then you need to take out some of the chicken and do more vegetables
you’ll look at the balance of what you have
I tell people some tips and tricks on how to test
Many times when I’m testing a recipe
I will already visualize three ways of making it
You’re also testing multiple methods so that you don’t have to start from scratch every single time
I test my recipes two to three times — though sometimes it takes me more like eight to 10 tries until I know I’ve nailed it
But even if I’m very happy with the results from the first or second try
I will do it again to make sure that it works
Then I’ll ask friends or family to test the recipe
You always need other people’s eyes and kitchens because your kitchen is not universal
You may be in Colorado where there’s a different altitude
“Do people need specific tools to make whatever it is that you’re going to recommend
Do they need basic staples or ingredients?” And increasingly
If you’re writing these for your family
I’m inviting people to go deeper so that whatever it is they make will be an heirloom for their community
I have a whole section devoted to publishing
I help you decide if you want to self-publish or if you want to find a publisher
you need to have critical eyes and a group of people that will give you honest feedback
When you want to publish through a publisher and have it be sold out in the world
you have a partner that’s going to be very tough because they’re not going to waste their time or money
So they’re going to really push you to do your best
which ultimately is the best thing for the cookbook.
But when you’re self-publishing and you’re sharing with your friends or family
People are not going to want to hurt your feelings
you’re going to have a cookbook that’s not as good [as it could have been].
the most important thing to know is that you have one shot
People in the publishing world all know each other
I give you specific details on what the pitch should have
You have to say how your product is different from what exists in the market

Verdi’s Rigoletto returned to the Metropolitan Opera on Monday with a fresh cast under the baton of Daniele Callegari
The performance featured the house debut of tenor Pene Pati as the Duke of Mantua
The role has been his calling card in opera houses worldwide
and it is easy to see why from this performance
Bartlett Sher’s Weimar-inspired production is compact and efficient
especially the switch from the Duke’s palace to the streets of Mantua
Men in dashing military uniforms and women in glittering gowns bring glamour to the Duke’s court
The premature appearance of Gilda in the tavern in Act III is still puzzling
but that’s the only time in the entire production where Sher has the audience guessing
Pati was born in Samoa and raised in New Zealand
and his exuberant stage presence suits the high-spirited
First impressions matter and Pati got off to a sterling start with “Questa o quella,” which he sang with style
His “È il sol dell’anima,” where he convinced Erin Morley’s Gilda of his love
was equally winning with playfulness and joy radiating from his entire countenance
He would later smack his lips when he learned that Gilda was being held captive in his palace.
fueled no doubt by a combination of adrenaline and the audience’s embrace
The result was climatic phrases that didn’t always take flight and the occasional strangulated high note
first heard in “Parmi veder le lagrime.” Pati’s otherwise impressive “La donna è mobile” also fell victim to his over-eagerness in the final measures
Pati has a voice of gold and undeniable charisma
a combination tailor-made for success once he gets his exuberance under control.
her pristine soprano conveying innocence and love in equal measure
Her Gilda staggered as if hit by a lightning bolt when she heard the Duke’s voice singing outside the house where she lives with her father Rigoletto
The warmth and passion of Morley’s soprano in the duet with the Duke that followed was eclipsed by the innocence and wonder of her love for him expressed in an exquisite “Caro nome” with her bell-like tones carrying through the house effortlessly
The emotional high points of the performance were her duets with Luca Salsi’s towering Rigoletto
Salsi’s jester was a malevolent figure whose voice alternately thundered and cajoled the courtiers with insults and slurs
Salsi revealed Rigoletto’s humanity in the tenderly sung passages with his daughter and the jester’s fears and insecurities through his haunting reflections on the implications of Monterone’s curse
Salsi’s voice erupted in rage in “Cortigiani
vil razza dannata,” as he demanded the release of his daughter and then dripped with tears as he was reduced to pleading that she be returned to him
The rare mezzo-soprano who manages to appear as sexy as she sounds
Soloman Howard reprised his menacing Sparafucile
with the bass’s cavernous low notes sending shivers down one’s spine
Eve Gigliotti also had her star turn as a duplicitous Giovanna
who slammed the door as she fled the scene of Gilda’s abduction under her less-than-watchful eye.
Blake Denson’s forceful Monterone again stalked the stage
with venom and vengeance present in his voice and visage
Soprano Tessa McQueen and baritone Yeongtaek Yang
both participants in the Met’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program
made their house debuts with confidence and style
and the Met Orchestra instilled passion and drama into the music
The energy that they generated was palatable and certainly a factor in Pati’s performance taking flight
Callegari is a master of supporting the voice
transparent sound from the orchestra to cushion Morley’s light
as he was in creating a column of sound that supported
yet never overwhelmed Salsi’s baritone as he exploded in fury or despair
Rigoletto runs through January 24 with the current cast; Michael Chioldi sings the title role in the final performance. metopera.org

“Strangulated high note” is just a generous euphemism to describe what was really a disaster
Erin Morley couldn’t be heard most of the time
her “pristine soprano” was simply inaudible
This is what you get these days at the Met under Peter Gelb’s reign
Posted Jan 12, 2025 at 11:57 am by Mark
Pati cracked twice in the performance I attended and his high notes were thin and tentative
I’m tired of praise heaped on serviceable singers

Pati Jinich’s list of accomplishments as a chef
Daytime Emmy nomination or invitation to cook at the White House
Jinich has made a name for herself both locally
and internationally with the world’s premier chefs and critics
With a resume that impressive, one might mistake Jinich for a food snob; however, her newest series, “Pati Jinich Explores PanAmericana” dispels any of those ideas nearly immediately
they were putting a reindeer sausage inside of a flour tortilla with ketchup and calling it a burrito,” Jinich said of one scene from an episode in the new season
“If you had told me that I would [be served that]
This gets to the heart of what Jinich’s show is about
and why it is a slight departure from her more cooking-focused programs
In “Pati Jinich Explores PanAmericana,” Jinich looks to tell the stories of those who came here from elsewhere
As the granddaughter of Polish refugees who escaped pogroms and the Holocaust
Americans and others who had a tough road to freedom matters a lot to her
“My hope [with this show] was to take my personal connection [of] being a Mexican immigrant in the U.S
and coming from a long line of refugees to connecting with peoples in the Americas that have these [same] stories,” she said
a fact abundantly clear to this day thanks to her thick accent
Her father’s parents were Polish farmers who fled pogroms and ended up in Mexico
while her mother’s parents came later in an attempt to escape the Holocaust
Both sets of Eastern Europeans ended up in Mexico
Jinich was raised with an appreciation for Jewish and Ashkenazi culture
She said that a beautiful struggle comes from people being displaced from their homeland
and it often yields little moments that the show aims to highlight
Jinich met with other Eastern European refugees who came to North America much later than her family but for similar reasons
“We were meeting with some Ukrainian families in Edmonton
and the newcomers who have come fleeing the war realized that there were Ukrainian families from three generations ago that were making dumplings and singing songs that had been banned in Ukraine under the Communist rule,” she said
Jinich lives in Chevy Chase now and is based professionally in the D.C
the job demands that she is always on and always moving
Jinich said that some might not realize how much work it is to create a program like this
“I come back home after these filming trips and I am completely exhausted,” she said
“I am drained from really opening up and connecting so much
but mostly I feel a deep responsibility to do right by their trust.”
Jinich shared a number of touching examples from her time in Alaska
which was highlighted in the first episode of the show
woman who had worked in law enforcement for two decades told Jinich about her change to charity work
“She said she realized that [she] was just putting her own people in jail
“She got out of the system and now she has a nonprofit where she’s helping people start businesses that have to do with their culture.”
These connections are often forged via food
but that eating together serves as a jumping off point
Jinich loves nothing more than a good bagel — except a good bialy
bialys formed an exemplary anecdote for Jinich
“I used to eat bialys with my Polish grandfather in Mexico City when I was really young
we would eat them with cheese and sometimes some mashed avocado
I was sitting there [in Alaska] eating the most perfect bialys … overlooking the mountains,” she said
“I was just thinking about if my grandfather were alive and I were to tell him that I am taking a bite of a bialy in Alaska with a man whose [grandfather] comes from the town next to my grandfather’s town … we could have been neighbors in Poland.”
and moments like this remind her of the power of storytelling and the importance of preserving Jewish history

Several villages in Pati Regency, Central Java, have many attractive tourist destinations, including Bakaran Wetan Village, Dukutalit Village, and Kedung Pancing Village.
Bakaran Wetan Village boasts cultural tourist attractions such as the Nyai Ageng Sabirah shrine, the Ki Dalang Soponyono site, and the Sudewi batik museum.
In Dukutalit Village, the strengths and potential of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) range from smoked milkfish to being a center for brass crafts. Meanwhile, in Kedung Pancing, there is Silugonggo River trekking, which tourists can enjoy.
This was stated by Najla Aliyah, one of the UGM students taking the Community Service Program (KKN-PPM) in Pati, when receiving a visit from the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Community Service, and Alumni, Dr. Arie Sujito, and a team of UGM Senate members in the regency, Tuesday (8/8).
Aliyah explained that the tourism potential in these three villages could be a significant opportunity for each community to improve their economy.
According to her, one of the programs carried out by KKN students is to create a tourism map and optimize the community’s awareness of tourism while also developing culinary products from smoked milkfish and batik handicrafts.
“We aim to create main job opportunities in the informal sector for local people, especially women,” she said.
In Kedung Pancing Village, Ahmad Taqiyudin, another member of the Pati unit, mentioned that students created a map of flood-prone areas in the hopes that necessary information related to flood disasters would be accessible to the community.
“Kedung Pancing Village is affected by flooding yearly,” he said.
In support of disaster mitigation, students also procured and installed evacuation route signs and assembly points to facilitate the community in finding the fastest route to evacuation houses during floods.
The Head of Bakaran Wetan Village, Wahyu Supriyo, expressed his appreciation for the students’ activities promoting the community’s economy through developing tourist villages, empowering MSMEs, and disaster mitigation.
“On behalf of the village administration, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to UGM students for greatly assisting our village activities,” he stated.
On a separate occasion, the Head of the Pati Regency Development Planning Agency, Dr. Muhtar, stated that the Pati Regency government also appreciates the attention given by UGM and their choice of Pati as the location for the Community Service Program, particularly in Juwana and Tambakromo Districts.
“These two districts have different characteristics, with Juwana being a center for fisheries and brass development, while Tambakromo focuses on agriculture with various challenges,” he explained.
Dr. Muhtar noted that Tambakromo District often experiences flooding due to river overflow and flash floods. Therefore, he hopes that UGM can provide solutions to address these issues.
“The presence of UGM students can help solve problems and optimize the existing resources and potential in Pati,” he emphasized.

A decision by the Bermuda Police Service not to release records of telephone calls sought under Pati was backed by the Deputy Information Commissioner
The BPS had found earlier that the requested documents did not exist
The Information Commissioner’s Office said that “under delegated authority”, the Deputy Information Commissioner had issued a decision after reviewing the BPS’s denial of a public access to information request seeking records of the calls
It added: “The decision affirmed the BPS’s refusal of the Pati request on the basis that no such records existed and further action was not required by the decision.”
An applicant made a Pati request on March 7
2024 asking for all records relating to recordings of three telephone conversations between the applicant and officers
The phone calls related to the applicant’s separate request for a record of their personal information
the applicant copied in the Commissioner of Police stating that they were concerned about a potential conflict of interest because the recordings they sought related to the BPS’s information officer — responsible for handling Pati requests
The BPS issued an initial response five days after the request was submitted
explaining that the records did not exist because only calls made in and out of the BPS’s control room were recorded
It acknowledged that owing to the applicant’s concerns
the police commissioner had been involved in reaching the service’s decision on the request
The BPS also informed the applicant that any review of the decision would lie with the Information Commissioner and on May 1
the applicant asked for an Information Commissioner’s review
“Public authorities are entitled … to administratively deny a request if a requested record does not exist or cannot be found after all reasonable steps have been taken to find it,” the decision from LaKai Dill
It added: “The BPS submitted that its understanding of the Pati request was a literal interpretation of the written request
the BPS understood that the applicant was seeking audio recordings of three separate telephone conversations the applicant had with different BPS officers on a specified date
the BPS submitted an e-mail thread between the applicant and the officers named in the Pati request
prior request seeking access to a record of their personal information
no records existed because the BPS only recorded ‘911’ calls through its control room
“The BPS’s 911 call recordings were stored for playback if needed and sometimes were used as evidence in court.”
Ms Dill’s decision said: “The Deputy Information Commissioner is satisfied that
its analysis of the Pati request was accurate and complete.”
It added that the Deputy Information Commissioner concluded that the BPS was justified in administratively denying the request
If not satisfied with the outcome of the Pati request
the applicant retains the right to seek and apply for judicial review to the Supreme Court

He's proud to represent Samoa and Aotearoa New Zealand
has just achieved one of the biggest milestones in the opera world
he made his debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera playing the lead role of the lecherous Duke in Verdi's libretto Rigoletto
Pati says it was such a far-fetched dream to be able to debut at what he calls the "Olympics" of opera singing
that I was like this ain't gonna happen," Pati tells Summer Times host Anna Thomas
"Even if you told me this 10 years ago
this is the type of thing that when we're studying
one day' … and to finally walk on stage and tick it off the list was a surreal feeling."

But Pati is no stranger to performing on the world stage, making numerous debuts in recent years in San Francisco
It's also his fifth time performing Rigoletto - the last was five months ago at Berlin State Opera
the amount of times something always leads you astray
you're kind of wondering how do you even get to that level and then when you finally hit it
it's a kind of satisfaction but at the same time you're proud you stuck to your guns."
He says he's got an "overwhelming sense of pride" to represent Samoa
the Pacific and Aotearoa New Zealand on the stage
"When you do your final bell, when you go out for your curtain call, they want you to stay in your costume, but they allowed me to go out with an ula and I wore my pounamu on stage for that bell at the Met
because I was just like I feel like I'm bringing everyone along with me
"And how hard it is just to break this scene out of New Zealand
immerse yourself in languages that we don't even have in New Zealand like French and German and then Italian
and then to finally reach that level really I was overwhelmed with emotions
"I tried to close my eyes during the curtain call and just think
I'm sure Aotearoa New Zealand and Samoa
they're back at home doing a standing ovation right now and that's all that matters'."
Pati says he keeps his voice in shape by going to a recording studio frequently
"I think the hardest part is just trying to stay well the entire time
You feel really bad because you're tyring to avoid everybody on the Metro
you're trying to avoid everybody on the street who's coughing your way but unfortunately that's the life isn't it
which I was … I had to cancel one of the shows because it's just the way it is
You end up having those days where you're like
I'm going to have to give it to someone else."
Pene Pati as Duke of Mantua at the New York Metropolitan Opera rehearsal for Rigoletto on 3 January
He says he misses home so much that if NZ was closer
"There's nothing like being home
When you've seen and travelled the world singing
there's something different about being home in New Zealand
that's what being home is about."
with upcoming opera performances in London
"I feel like we started [the year] too high

A government agency hired lawyers to handle a single public access to information request that involved its communications with the Premier about a private investment firm — at a cost to taxpayers of more than $165,000
The outlay on legal fees was disclosed by Major Marc Telemaque
It came more than two years after The Royal Gazette asked for records underpinning a claim by David Burt that the Government needed to introduce fees for Pati requests because of the “extraordinary amount” incurred by public authorities in dealing with them
Mr Burt, who is also the Minister of Finance, declared in his 2023-24 Budget statement that a “government authority spent in excess of $300,000 to respond to a single Pati request” but gave no further details
He insisted: “These are funds that could have been used to advance the wellbeing of Bermuda but were instead spent researching information.”
It took another Pati request to the Cabinet Office
a two-year wait for a response from Major Telemaque and an inquiry by the Information Commissioner’s Office for a fuller picture to emerge of how the publicly funded Bermuda Business Development Agency hired counsel to handle the records request involving its communications with Mr Burt
The Premier’s remarks in the 2023-24 Budget statement — including that the Pati regime could be “cumbersome and expensive” — were included to justify a plan to charge fees to members of the public for submitting requests for information
Mr Burt claimed: “High levels of expenditure on requests are not uncommon
as many government departments have had to halt vital work or hire short-term consultants to assist in responding to Pati requests.”
The statement did not include any statistics on the actual total cost annually to the public purse of processing Pati requests and it has not been possible to obtain those figures
A government spokeswoman said last week: “This would be difficult to collate based on the sheer volume of requests and varying nature of those requests.”
The ICO’s most recent annual report showed there were 177 Pati requests made in 2024
Only 43 public authorities received records requests last year
including 22 that received only a single request
There were 134 public authorities which received no requests at all
Parliamentarians passed the Public Access to Information Amendment Act last year and it came into force in January
The legislation allowed the Government to charge $60 per hour for any requests that exceed 16 hours to research and compile
and to reject requests requiring more than 100 hours to process
The Gazette made a Pati request to the Cabinet Office soon after Mr Burt delivered the 2023-24 Budget to find out more about the Pati request that he claimed cost $300,000 and for details about the short-term consultants hired to help with records requests
Major Telemaque responded in June 2023 to say that records about the $300,000 request were “now being collated” and would soon be supplied
He rejected the part of the request that sought records about the consultants because it was “too broad” and processing it would disrupt the work of the public authority
The Gazette narrowed the request but no records were shared and no explanation was given
A similar Pati request was submitted in June 2024
The Gazette asked the Information Commissioner to investigate and last November Ms Gutierrez ordered the Cabinet Secretary to issue a decision on the June 2024 request by January 3 this year
eventually sending his decision to the newspaper on March 27
He wrote that the Pati request referenced by the Premier in his February 2023 Budget statement was made to the BDA in May 2019 and was for records about GTL Atlantic Ltd
the name Game Theory incorporated under in Bermuda
“The $300K spent in responding to this request appears to comprise $165,932.50 in legal fees
combined with almost 100 hours of staff time [at various levels in the organisation] devoted to the matter,” he wrote
The government spokeswoman said Mr Burt did not give any details about the Pati request to the BDA in his Budget statement because the content of records requests and the management of them were “not matters for ministers and are not disclosed to them by law”
The company had posted a job advert for six “sports trading operators” in Bermuda, but David Burt said it opted not to open an office here after an article about its recruitment drive appeared in the Gazette’s Business section
who was then the BDA’s business development manager
had worked hard for six months to bring the Guernsey-based company
to Bermuda and the “disappointment felt in” his voice was “palpable” when he heard of its change of heart
The newspaper submitted a Pati request in May 2019 to the BDA for all the records it held about the firm
including communications between Mr Richards and any public servant
The agency disclosed 600 hard-copy documents in response to the request, although it redacted the names of public officials and was later told by the Information Commissioner that it needed to make further disclosures
Gitanjali Gutierrez wrote that it was “in the public interest to understand why the Premier criticised The Royal Gazette during the parliamentary session on February 15
2019” and that “disclosure of the information in the records about two elected officials … is in the public interest”
Mr Burt said the company fell within the fintech industry
The initial disclosure revealed that Game Theory told a BDA official it was happy to be categorised as a fintech firm “if it helps from a political point of view” although it did not view itself as a financial technology company
The later disclosure showed that Wayne Caines
when he was the Minister of National Security and responsible for fintech
was involved in discussions with the company about setting up an office on the island
The company described itself as a “private investment office for a family” in its correspondence with the BDA
again refused to share details about the short-term consultants hired to handle Pati requests and the work they did
“There are 12 ministries and over 700 government departments
and my view … is that this request is manifestly too broad and creates an administrative burden to fulfil …” he wrote
was “aware of two ministries [health and finance] having engaged consultants in the relevant period to manage the volume of Pati requests”
The Gazette asked the BDA for comment for this article
said in his 2023-24 Budget statement: “The public access to information regime is a proud achievement of the PLP government and serves as a way to ensure that the public have access to the information that the Government keeps on them and are better able to understand the reasoning for government actions
“Pati increases the Government’s transparency and accountability
the regime can be cumbersome and expensive
a government authority spent in excess of $300,000 to respond to a single Pati request
“These are funds that could have been used to advance the wellbeing of Bermuda
but were instead spent researching information
“High levels of expenditure on requests are not uncommon
as many government departments have had to halt vital work or hire short-term consultants to assist in responding to Pati requests
the Government will implement a nominal fee for Pati requests that are not from private individuals requesting information about the data that the Government holds about them
“This nominal fee will not nearly cover the extraordinary amount that researching Pati requests costs the Government
but the Cabinet has deemed it necessary to implement a fee to ensure that at least some of the costs of requests are recouped.”

developed her love for drawing since she was a child
Now she has turned her passion into a tool for evangelization
winning over thousands of followers around the world
From an early age, drawing has been a passion for Patricia Trigo (also known as Pati.te). Although she began her professional path studying Advertising and Public Relations in Pamplona, a decisive year in the United States brought her closer to the world of animation, taking her love for drawing to a new dimension. In 2016, she opened an account on Instagrambut soon became a platform to connect the hearts of thousands of people
but also inspires many people to renew their faith.
- I am the seventh in a family of ten siblings
We received the faith at home and I attended a great school that fostered my spiritual growth
my relationship with my faith began to change profoundly
especially during a year I spent in the United States
I questioned everything: how could God allow suffering
but I knew that my problem had a spiritual background
I began to rediscover a Jesus who is a friend
who suffers with us and loves us in a way that I had not fully understood
I also discovered the "spiritual childhood" of St
something that resonated very much with me
I realized that I could not do it all alone
that I had to trust God as a child trusts her father
reflecting that renewed faith and sharing it with others
- The Virgin Mary has always played a very important role in my life
my parents told me about her love and care
But it was during this process of conversion and spiritual search that I really felt her presence in a very special way
I went with a group of young people from the parish to Fatima
and there I rediscovered the Virgin Mary as a mother who tucks you in
who tells you not to worry and that she is there for you
I saw her as the shortest and most tender way to reach God.
Hearing again the story of the little shepherds and how
they faced so many difficulties for telling the truth (that they had seen Our Lady and had a message to give) reminded me of the importance of spiritual childhood: to trust fully in God and in his love
It was like an encounter with Our Lady that gave me a new peace and strength to move forward
- In Fatima I had the idea of making an illustration of the Virgin with me before we hugged
but I was hesitant because I was worried about how it might affect my professional career (at the time I was working in the world of animation in a completely secular production company)
I told Our Lady: "If I share it and something goes wrong
and even media outlets became interested in my work
I realized that being authentic and sharing my faith could inspire others
COVID arrived and the parable of the talents challenged me a lot
I felt that the Lord was telling me: "Work with what I have given you"
together with the message that our life on Earth is to prepare us for Heaven
helped me to stop being ashamed to share my faith openly.
In confinement I began to share more drawings related to faith
Therese: "The elevator that will lift me to heaven is your arms
He alternated such drawings with more mundane ones
but the response to religious illustrations grew
I got really overwhelmed because I thought
He reassured me a lot and encouraged me to go ahead
I pass on to him the illustrations I have doubts about
At first I was afraid to be open with my faith
but with time I understood that it was a talent I had to share
Through my illustrations I try to transmit that love of God
that humanity of the saints and that closeness of the Virgin Mary that have transformed me so much.
At first I had the saints as something almost impossible to reach
as if they were perfect and out of our level
Teresa of the Child Jesus had normal difficulties
or how Mother Teresa of Calcutta faced spiritual darkness
made me understand that they too had challenges similar to ours
What set them apart was that they never gave up because they had God's grace
That inspired me to see that holiness is not an exclusive path for some
but something possible if you let God act in your life to sanctify it
Because in the end God is the one who makes you holy
I think AI challenges us to be more human and to go deeper into what we do
but it will never replace the emotional and spiritual connection that handmade art has
I think it will make human art more valuable and appreciated
And with respect to my website Don't worry
There is nothing better than giving something that

There were no associated systemic symptoms
She presented with a best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 6/18 and 6/30 on the right and left eyes
anterior subcapsular cataract and +2 anterior chamber (AC) cells and flare were noted on both eyes
Intraocular pressures (IOP) were within normal limits
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed bilateral cystoid macular oedema (CMO)
Serum herpes simplex virus (HSV) IgM was detected
whereas autoimmune and other infectious aetiologies were excluded
Aqueous humour samples from both eyes tested negative for HSV
Bilateral 16 mg subtenon triamcinolone injection were done
Dexamethasone 0.1% eye drops and atropine 1.0% eye drops were started
Topical anti-glaucomatous medication was started due to IOP > 30 mmHg on both eyes and Valacyclovir 1g three times a day was initiated
Final visit showed an improvement of BCVA to 6/9 on both eyes
There was complete resolution of AC cells and flare
and CMO on OCT.Conclusion: The diagnosis of bilateral herpetic anterior uveitis was based on the criteria set by The Herpetic Eye Disease Study (HEDS)
she was in a state of transient immunodeficiency that is pregnancy
which could have led to bilateral ocular involvement. Keywords: anterior
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a prevalent infectious agent that can cause various clinical manifestations including uveitis.1 Uveitis associated with HSV is one of the principal causes of blindness in developing countries,2 and it accounts for 5% to 10% of all uveitis cases.3
there have been only few reported cases of bilateral anterior uveitis associated with HSV
we describe a case of bilateral chronic anterior uveitis in a serum HSV IgM positive immunocompetent patient
This study is a case report that used the Sunrise Electronic Medical Records at the Royal Adelaide Hospital
This study was performed according to the principles of Good Clinical Practice [Chapter 2 of the ICH Harmonized Tripartite Guideline for Good Clinical Practice (GCP)]
and national laws and regulations about clinical studies
Approval for research and publication was granted by the Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN) Human Research Ethics Committee
This is a case of a 42-year-old female from Kenya who immigrated to Australia in 2011
She presented with a 2-year history of intermittent painful eye redness associated with blurring of vision of both eyes
Ocular symptoms began soon after childbirth
Hypertension and hypothyroidism were the only known comorbidities and were well-controlled
Figure 1 (A and B) Macular OCT showing uveitic macular oedema in both eyes; (C and D) Macular OCT 2 weeks post-subtenon triamcinolone injections; (E and F) Macular OCT 4 weeks post-subtenon triamcinolone injections; (G and H) Macular OCT 2 months post-subtenon triamcinolone injections
Dexamethasone 0.1% eye drop 6 times a day and atropine 1.0% eye drop 3 times a day to both eyes were initiated at initial visit
which led to a decision to perform bilateral subtenon injections of 16 mg triamcinolone
Two weeks post-subtenon injections, the BCVA improved to 6/12 on the right eye and 6/9 on the left eye. In the anterior chamber of both eyes, only 0.5 cells with resolution of flare and KPs were noted. On macular OCT, the CMO in the right eye partially resolved while it completely resolved in the left eye (Figure 1C and D)
IOP measured at 32 mmHg and 34 mmHg on the right and left eye
which were treated with topical anti-glaucomatous medication
The patient was monitored every 2 weeks
Figure 2 Anterior segment photos of both eyes 2 months into treatment
presence of posterior synechiae and anterior subcapsular cataract in both eyes were observed
The patient tested positive for serum HSV IgM
which resulted in initiation of Valacyclovir 1 g three times a day
Autoimmune and other infectious aetiologies were excluded
HSV DNA were not detected on aqueous humour PCR analyses of both eyes
pain and signs of active intraocular inflammation
Although the patient reported cloudy blurring of vision
this was attributable to the cataract formation in both eyes
Dexamethasone 0.1% eye drop was reduced to 4 times a day and atropine 1.0% eye drop to once at night
and oral valacyclovir 1 g three times a day was continued
Herpes simplex virus associated anterior uveitis typically presents unilaterally accompanied by ocular hypertension, keratic precipitates (KPs) and sectoral iris atrophy with or without transillumination defects.1 Concomitant keratitis can occur in 30%–40%,5 but its absence does not exclude herpetic uveitis origin.4
It mainly occurs in middle-aged inidividuals,4,7 and also has a female preponderance.4,8 A case series in Italy reported that 59.8% of their patients diagnosed with HSV uveitis were female.8 These are consistent with our patient’s demographics
the case presented has several deviations from the typical presentation of HSV anterior uveitis
To date, only few studies have described bilateral HSV anterior uveitis. The incidence of bilateral ocular involvement varies among literatures. One study stated that the frequency of bilateral involvement ranges from 3% to 11.9% and is more common in younger individuals,8 while another study reported bilateral occurrence in 18% of their patients.9
In 1969, a clinical report described a 34-year-old Caucasian woman who developed bilateral herpes simplex panuveitis 10 days postpartum. Her past ocular history revealed a previous bout of anterior uveitis in the right eye in 1963 that also started in the second week postpartum.11
KPs in HSV anterior uveitis can appear as fine stellate or granulomatous KPs,1 but the typical herpetic KPs are large.13 These usually disappear with treatment13 as in our patient whose KPs in both eyes resolved within two weeks of treatment
Subtenon triamcinolone injection is said to be comparable to intravitreal injection as both are able to reach similar vitreous concentrations.18 It still has the ability to cause secondary ocular hypertension, but anti-glaucomatous medications are highly effective in controlling IOP17 as in our patient
The patient was diagnosed to have bilateral HSV anterior uveitis based on the HEDS criteria supported by the presence of serum antibodies to HSV.6 In most centres, the diagnosis of herpetic anterior uveitis remains to be clinical and intraocular fluid analysis is only done to confirm diagnosis in some cases.9
The diagnosis of herpetic anterior uveitis is still a clinical diagnosis in most centres and intraocular fluid analysis is only done in a few cases where confirmatory diagnosis is needed.9 In cases of bilateral presentations
it is important to rule out other possible autoimmune and infectious aetiologies and have a high index of suspicion
A proper thorough history taking is also imperative as it could uncover clinical scenarios that could potentially be associated with the clinical presentation as in our patient
the bilateral presentation could be due to the transient state of immunodeficiency that is pregnancy
Prompt treatment should be given to limit secondary complications
and continuous monitoring is important as recurrences are common
The patient was consented to the publication of this study

and my first thought was: I won't make it to 30," says Anna Bacardit
who was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer two years ago.
The shock of receiving the diagnosis was very tough
and despite the changes that come with this kind of treatment
she continued living my normal life.
you learn that 'metastasis' is a word that’s terrifying at first—you think you’re going to die
But then you realize that science has made great advances and there are treatments that can maintain your quality of life
but I don't feel sick," she explains.
Anna received the good news that the treatment had worked: the cancer had receded
and she could now have the primary tumor removed.
this meant she would have to stay home all summer
it was the first time that cancer forced her to slow down.
who was staying at her house because they were supposed to go to a music concert
why don't we organize some concerts in your living room?' At first
so we put the idea aside," she remembers.
After the successful operation, Anna revisited the idea. Since she would spend her rehab and treatment at her parents' home
they thought of organizing a series of concerts there during the three weeks her radiotherapy lasted.

"We wanted the tickets to be a donation to cancer research
and people could donate whatever they wanted," she explains.
They chose to donate all the money they raised to the Metastasis Challenge, an initiative from Barcelona's Institute for Research in Biomedicine to raise €5 million for metastasis research.
We estimated we could have about 30 or 40 people on the patio and that people would donate around €15
We reached that goal before the first concert," she recalls.
and including speeches from activists and experts to raise awareness on metastatic cancer
Ràdio Pati concluded with a total of €13,270 raised.
"Ràdio Pati helped me stay active during these months
It gave me a lot of positive energy and distractions

Pati Rolf is a former volleyball referee who spent 18 years at international level before retiring after the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020
She was part of the historic all-female gold medal officiating crew at the Rio 2016 volleyball women’s final
and brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the FIVB Rules of the Game & Refereeing Commission
who is also the Director of Officials at USA Volleyball
to discuss her journey and illustrious career in volleyball
What was your career path to become the FIVB Rules of the Game & Refereeing Commission member?
I have always appreciated the support and coaching I have received as a FIVB International Referee. Many individuals on the commission have helped me personally to grow as an official
communicator and facilitator of the game. I have always appreciated the importance of management
having spent 25 years as a head coach at the college level in the USA and as a board member of volleyball and other professional organisations. However
I have always enjoyed the idea of serving others. I grew up in that environment due to my mother and service was always a big part of my life.
My path to the Commission really was out of process. I served as President of our North Country Region of USA Volleyball in the 90s and was a member of the USA Badger Region Board when I move to Wisconsin to coach at Marquette
I was elected the USA At-Large National Indoor Referees Representative to our Officials Assembly
then became Chair of the USA Rules of the Game Commission
I decided to apply to be Director of Officials for USA Volleyball to help grow the love of officiating in the USA
It was an honour to be asked by Mr Paredes to serve on the FIVB Rules of the Game & Refereeing Commission
particularly the duty of serving fellow referees as a Referee Coach
I am looking forward to this experience working with my colleagues
Pati Rolf officiating at a match of the Olympic Games Rio 2016
How do you overcome challenges in your professional career?
I believe the most important core value is listening and respecting people’s views and ideas
and from this I have learnt a lot about how things work and how they/we look at the game and its future
I value other people’s input and opinions; I also love to read and reflect on the thoughts and ideas of others. Education and learning are critical to growth
This has allowed me to continue to love the process of learning
Life will always throw challenges at us.
Do you have any special moments in your career that you remember and would like to share with the readers
I think the memory that really continues to carry me are the insane number of friends I have across the world due to my travels
I have done World Military Games in Canada
I can really tell you every event has its beauty. From the players and coaches
and to my fellow referees that are like family to me. I referee for reasons that are different than the act of officiating
I was a player and coach first. Refereeing was to fill a gap
I knew as a child if could see the best teams in the world play
What advice would you give your 25-year-old self
I was very brave which is hilarious to put on paper
as a coach I wish I would have taken more interesting jobs and I wish I had gone overseas to play and coach.
Moving around the country and world to gain experiences was not something that women did in the 80s
I would have told my younger self to go for it and bring my family with me
I will say I have a very full and healthy life so far and plenty of time for more adventures

La Bohème returned to the Lyric Opera stage for a four-week run
Puccini’s tune-packed tale of young Parisian artists
and tuberculosis is about as titanium a piece of musical theater as exists
two talented principals lifted a routine Puccini night into a successful evening—no mean feat with pedestrian conducting and stage direction that hovered between amateurish and appalling
Born in Chicago, Ailyn Pérez returned for her third appearance at Lyric Opera following Elixir of Love and Faust (where her company debut as Marguerite was hobbled
Mimi has become a signature role for Pérez and she brought the requisite star power both vocally and dramatically
At times the soprano overdid the girlishness in the first two acts with Mimi seeming more hyperactive than endearing
What happened to the shy and lonely seamstress
Yet she sang a glowing “Mi chiamano Mimi” and her portrayal rose in depth and dramatic strength as the opera unfolded
Her rich-toned and expressive “Donde liete usci” was the vocal highlight of the evening
and Pérez sang and acted with subtle and touching sensitivity in the tragic final act
Pene Pati is making debuts at major houses this season including Lyric and the Met (as the Duke in Rigoletto)
The Samoan tenor possesses a pleasing voice
vibrant and flexible yet he got off to a mixed start as Rodolfo
While he nailed a secure top C in “Che gelida manina” his hectoring phrasing lacked a smooth legato line with an oddly squawked note on the way up to the aria’s previous A flat
in Act III and blended beautifully with Pérez in the closing music of reconciliation
Pati moved gracefully on stage; he acted credibly and seemed to have a simpatico rapport with Pérez—as much as one could tell from Row Q
where the singers’ facial expressions were indiscernible
Gabriella Reyes’ Musetta was in the modern mode of over-the-top excess
though she sang a resplendent “Quando men’ vo” and brought a compensating sympathy for Mimi in the final act
Best known for contemporary works like Fire Shut Up in My Bones
the baritone proved vocally underpowered in the role’s big moments
which proved less than rousing opening night
It’s not often one walks out of a Bohème performance dazzled by the Schaunard
a third-year Ryan Center member from Oshkosh
One couldn’t help feeling that this was a voice and singer better suited to Marcello
Peixen Chen completed the Bohemian quartet as Colline
Chen brought little feeling to his uniformly loud “Vecchia zimarra.” Levi Hernandez
was wonderfully characterful in his contrasted comprimario turns as Benoit and Alcindoro
Most of the show’s problems came from the pit and the production side
Mediocre conductors can always count on a return ticket to Lyric Opera. Jordan de Souza made an unimpressive company debut in Florencia en el Amazonas four years ago and his direction of Bohème was on the same bland level: crucial dynamic and scoring details sloughed over
The Lyric Opera Orchestra soldiered on professionally but the musicians sounded dispirited as well as strangely light in sonority
Worse still was the stage direction by Melanie Bacaling in her company debut
In addition to falling into the usual traps when directing this opera—extras and chorus members merely standing around in Act II
and the Bohemians’ hi-jinx being silly without actually being funny—Bacaling contributed several lapses of her own
The first act was so darkly lit one could barely make out the principals’ faces from more than ten rows back
A bright spotlight was suddenly turned on halfway through Act II
wavered hesitantly on the singers before vanishing again
Parpignol’s wagon and the kids and choral women were plopped center stage blocking the principal singers
after Colline sings his coat song on the stairs outside the garret
he turns to address Schaunard who is nowhere in sight
(Ian Rucker had to quickly race down the stairs.) This level of staging ineptitude would not pass muster at a high school Battle of the Bands
Herbert Ross’s antediluvian production from LA Opera looks its 32 years but has some clever moments and eye-catching visuals
The problem was not the sets’ age but the bizarre scenic layout
More than half of the set for the outer acts is devoted to the exterior outside of the artists’ building
The Bohemians’ tiny garret is high on a second level like a Joseph Cornell box
moving the opera’s intimate action far away from the audience
The Lyric Opera Chorus looked light in numbers for the Cafe Momus ensembles but sang with worthy polish and energy

Miss Perez and Mr Pati were convincing as Mimi and Rodolfo
it was hard to believe that these were two young ardent lovers
Too bad the Lyric did not make history by casting him as Marcello
Posted Mar 21, 2025 at 8:55 am by John
I fully agree about the dreadful conducting.Boheme must move forward at all points
but the conducting for the critical Act I solos and duet was unbearably slow
The tenor had some warmth and power in the mid and upper-mid range; very little ability to project when singing softly and very little warmth
and the Marcello was totally out of his depth

New legislation has changed part of the Public Access to Information Act
A statement from the Information Commissioner’s Office explained that all requests for personal information — including disciplinary records, human resource documents and recruitment records — must now be made using the Personal Information Protection Act
Pipa, which came into effect on January 1
gives individuals the right to access what personal and medical information organisations have about them
how it was received and used and with whom it was shared
requests for other information held by public authorities must still be made using Pati
Information Commissioner Gitanjali Gutierrez explained: “The public can still make Pati requests for records held by a public authority containing a third party’s personal information
“Pipa will not be a barrier to fulfilling the Pati Act’s purposes of promoting accountability and transparency around decisions made by public authorities
it means that records containing the work-related decisions and actions by elected officials
board chairs and other leaders within the public sector may still be subject to disclosure in response to a Pati request
“This will only occur when the public has a strong interest in the accountability and transparency of these individuals’ work information and their expectation of privacy for this information is low.”

The Samoan actor makes his Metropolitan Opera debut this month as the libertine Duke
Samoan tenor Pene Pati makes an important Met debut in one of his signature roles
the libertine Duke of Mantua in Verdi’s Rigoletto (playing January 6–24). As he prepared to join forces with a pair of company veterans—baritone Luca Salsi in the title role and soprano Erin Morley as Gilda—Pati spoke to the Met’s Christopher Browner about exploring the many aspects of the Duke’s character and representing his homeland on opera’s greatest stage
What makes the Duke a good role to introduce you to Met audiences?Pene Pati: At first
I actually wished it were something like La Bohème
something that would make the audience love me a little bit more
I’m glad because the Duke offers so much in terms of character and vocal exploration
It’s a good way to show all the colors of my voice
The Duke behaves pretty badly—do you see him as a villain?I don’t intentionally try to play him as a bad person
He’s enjoyed this high status his entire life and doesn’t understand why everyone around him doesn’t act the same way he does
in the aria “Parmi veder le lagrime,” that he’s suddenly surprised by the experience of new
more tender emotions. It’s a glimpse into his actual soul
and it’s a beautiful moment for the audience to see that
beneath the privilege, he’s just a person
Is that the highlight of the score for you? It’s not an easy aria
I thought of it as a hurdle: “As long as I get through this
I actually look forward to singing it because it’s the only moment where I can really be myself. And I sing it completely differently than the other two Duke arias
a lot of textures, instead of just going out there and singing it full on
Having grown up on the other side of the world
what does this Met debut mean to you?Growing up as a Samoan
historically everything was passed on to the next generation through song
Everyone sings, and music has always been part of me
But even after I decided to pursue a career in singing
I didn’t see many Pacific Islanders in opera
I took it as a challenge and decided that maybe I could be the one to pave a path. And now that I’m going to be singing at the Met

Members of the public seeking information from the Government through public access to information will have to pay $60 if their requests will take more than 16 hours to process
Pati requests will be dropped if they require more than 100 hours for civil servants to research and craft a response
Presenting the Public Access to Information Amendment Bill before the House of Assembly on Friday
claimed that government ministries had been swamped by Pati applications
She said it placed “an unreasonable burden on resources” and took up “considerable time and effort” by government officials
The minister said the fee would deter organisations from filing “vexatious” claims that prevented civil servants from carrying out their day-to-day duties
The tariff has been condemned by Gitanjali Gutierrez
the Information Commissioner whose office oversees Pati requests
telling MPs the Government had “established a framework that creates transparency and accountability
and provides rights of access for government records”
she added that the Government had received more than 1,200 Pati applications since its inception in 2015
with administrators struggling with the workload
Ms Caesar said some “ill-defined” requests resulted in “thousands of pages” of paperwork
She added: “Over the past nine years that Pati has been in force
public authorities have raised a number of issues
“Many of these challenges relate to the management of the voluminous and sometimes complex requests
“The most frequently expressed concern by public officers involved in responding to Pati requests is the unreasonable burden on the stretched resources and the ability to balance regular business duties with Pati requests.”
which come into effect on January 1 next year
would help applicants to “narrow or focus” their applications
While many PLP MPs took a free swing at unnamed organisations for “abusing” the Pati system
backbencher Jamahl Simmons took aim at The Royal Gazette and its foreign journalists in particular
In a four-minute speech during the Pati debate
where was this concern for fairness when you all [the One Bermuda Alliance] slashed scholarships
Where was this concern for fairness when you tried to slash access to mammograms?”
He added: “I get it that the Pati legislation turns on your supporters
They really like it because it’s all about getting the PLP
“So The Royal Gazette knows very well the number of times I’ve called them up and chastised them because of lazy journalism
you can call me xenophobic but I don’t care
They then tend to be able to ask the right questions
They then tend to be able to expose the facts
sending in Pati requests and writing stories for The Royal Gazette
“And so that’s been a bone of contention of mine
and the editors of the Gazette will know that I have chastised them for it because it’s lazy journalism and you find that once you get the answer they are very rarely able to take it past a daylong story.”
Mr Simmons said Pati seldom yielded “a Jetgate” or stories that could be stretched into “something substantive”
because they’re not real journalists doing this.”
The minister was backed by a raft of government MPs maintaining that organisations were abusing the system
He said: “I think that some organisations and people think that Pati is their own research department
put a spin on it to make those who they don’t like so much damage their character
“The organisations that constantly use this facility ..
they can well afford it or they can get their own department.”
PLP backbencher Wayne Caines added: “The Pati legislation serves a significant purpose
“We have to now make sure that it’s not being abused
“There are [government] organisations that cannot function because of the plethora of requests that are going in from specific organisations for their own design.”
Mr Caines added that government institutions could be hamstrung by Pati applications that were “duplicitous and used for mal-intent”
and put forward by organisations intent on “misusing it for their own narrative” and intent on going on “fishing expeditions”
One voice of dissent from the Government's back benches came from Renée Ming
who expressed concern that the fee would freeze out those on low budgets seeking information from the Government
questioned how the Bill created “a fairer” Bermuda
He said: “Many of the clauses in this Pati amendment act are minor and procedural
the One Bermuda Alliance has no question with these clauses
the OBA does have concerns when it comes to the charging of a fee
How does this make Bermuda fairer and better
How does it make the Government more transparent
“How does it increase the transparency of public authorities
How does this improve the process of informing the public about the activities of public authorities
“The amendment proposing the charging of a fee could exclude those who cannot afford to pay the fee.”
The Bill was passed and will go to the Senate this week

Plastic straws were seen when the tide receded on the coast of Surabaya
Trash that is carried to the sea then pollutes the ocean and has the potential to affect existing ecosystems
Indonesia is the second largest producer of plastic waste in the world after China
as shown by data from the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP)
Poorly managed plastic waste can pollute the environment and threaten the lives of living organisms
It is recorded that every year there are 3.2 million tons of unmanaged plastic waste in Indonesia
The situation is even worse evidenced by the amount of waste that ends up in the sea
One of the most commonly found types of plastic waste is plastic straws
According to data from Divers Clean Action
the usage of straws in Indonesia reaches 93,244,847 pieces every day
they could reach a length of 16,784 kilometers
can endanger the lives of living creatures
Plastic is easily ingested by marine animals
It is not uncommon to find animals such as birds or turtles dead due to being trapped in plastic waste
There have also been cases of turtles with their noses clogged by plastic straws
Very small plastics or microplastics are found in fish consumed by humans
Research by Elisabeth S Gruber from the Medical University of Vienna
published in the journal Exposure and Health in March 2022 shows that nanoplastics and microplastics have the ability to change the composition of the gut microbiome
Disruption of the digestive tract microbiome by exposure to plastic is linked to metabolic diseases
High exposure to microplastics and nanoplastics can also trigger inflammation and disrupt the immune system (Kompas

The magnitude of the negative impact of plastic use has prompted many researchers to develop and produce innovative products that can replace plastic-based products with more environmentally friendly materials
The development is done while still considering the sustainability of the materials used
A recent study was conducted by researchers from the Agroindustrial Research Center of the Agricultural and Food Research Organiation of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN)
The researchers have developed a drinking straw made from sago starch
In addition to being environmentally friendly
Children learn to make toys and decorations from used straws at a campaign against plastic waste held by SDN Pondok Labu 11
This campaign aims to encourage children to reduce the use of environmentally unfriendly materials
the engineer from the Agroindustry Research Center of BRIN who is also a researcher developing straws made from sago starch
stated that sago is a wealth of local resources in Indonesia that is abundant
the raw material tends to be forgotten and has not been maximally utilized
According to data from the Ministry of Industry
around 50 percent of the world's potential sago is located in Indonesia
The area of sago plants in Indonesia reaches 5.5 million hectares
the potential production of sago starch reaches 41.25 million tons per year
Harianto and the research team utilized sago as a raw material for producing environmentally friendly straws
In addition to increasing the utilization of sago
this research can also help to address the issue of plastic straw waste in the environment
When contacted in Jakarta on Sunday (18/2/2024)
an environmentally friendly straw that would be developed using raw materials from seaweed flour or carrageenan
the price of carrageenan is quite expensive
environmentally friendly straws can actually be developed using large flour as raw material
it will compete with the fulfillment of basic necessities of the society
Its price is also more expensive compared to the sago starch
The demand for direct consumption or for industry is quite high
sago becomes the main raw material for the production of environmentally friendly straws," he said
Harianto explained that the innovation of using sago starch for straws has several advantages
One of them is that the residue of sago straw can easily decompose in the soil
which means that it will not cause environmental pollution
These straws also have a water soak resistance of up to one hour
there are ongoing efforts to develop sago straws with a water soak resistance of up to four hours
The innovation of using sago starch as a straw has several advantages
including the fact that the remains of the sago straw easily decompose in the soil
thus preventing environmental pollution caused by waste
This straw is also safe for consumption even after being soaked or softened
Unused straw products have a fairly long shelf life of over a year
The straw is also quite strong and not easily brittle
the development of straws from sago starch begins with a modification process of the raw material sago starch
This process needs to be done to prevent the dark or dull color of the sago starch
The process continues with the formulation of additional ingredients to improve the performance of the product
Only then is the cooking process carried out for pregelatinization which is also related to the formulation

"We are very open if any industry is interested in collaborating on commercialization," he said
Harianto stated that it is undeniable that there are several challenges in the development process
These challenges include producing a product with a clear and white appearance
Another challenge is sustainability of raw materials
The sustainability of demand and industry needs for sagu starch has not yet occurred
causing the price of sagu starch to sometimes become expensive
Harianto stated that the development of environmentally-friendly straws will continue
Improvements with various alternative technology processes will be undertaken
development will be done for the use of other raw materials
He also hopes that various studies can continue to be developed to better utilize the potential of sago in Indonesia
"The most important support needed is the creation or creativity of various products that are in demand by consumers
the industry will then produce to meet that interest
Sago starch can be used for food raw materials or other industrial raw materials
such as environmentally friendly straws," he said
The process of sago processing begins by marking the sago stem with a half-circle line
residents remove the bark of the tree following the line made
The removed bark is not discarded but instead used as a container to hold grated sago
Senior Researcher at the Horticulture and Plantation Research Center of the Agricultural Research and Food Agency BRIN
assessed during Horties Talk #11 on August 23
that harvesting sago stems is still difficult to do in Indonesia due to limited infrastructure
the availability of sago land and potential in Indonesia is very large

Legislation to apply fees and time limits to public access to information requests was passed in the Upper House yesterday
but only after opposition senators forced a vote on the controversial amendment
The Public Access to Information Amendment Bill will enable the Government to charge $60 per hour for any requests that exceed 16 hours to research and compile
Requests that take more than 100 hours to complete can be rejected
said: “The Government has established a framework that creates transparency and accountability with respect to information held by public authorities.”
He added that there had been more than 1,200 Pati requests in the past nine years
Mr Fubler said that some Pati requests had resulted in civil servants having to trawl through thousands of pages of records
which was “exhausting public authority resources”
He said: “Many of these challenges relate to the management of voluminous and sometimes complex requests
“Responding to Pati requests requires significant time and effort to first conduct an appropriate search and then produce those records
“Some requesters sometimes make broad and ill-defined requests for any and all correspondence relating to an issue over extended time periods
without a willingness to refine the search criteria.”
Mr Fubler said that the fee would encourage applicants to submit more focused questions rather than broad requests
The move was condemned by One Bermuda Alliance senators
said that the problem could be resolved if more resources and training were allocated to Pati requests
Dr De Couto also pointed out that despite claims by the Government that it had carried out a consultation process before drafting the Bill, it had been condemned by Gitanjali Gutierrez
Dwayne Robinson said it would send a message that the Government was not interested in promoting transparency
He added that while a fee would boost the Government’s coffers
it failed to address the underlying lack of resources
He said: “It doesn’t address staffing issues
We don’t want to pass legislation that is going to disincentivise people from using it
suggested that the Government should share information by default
thus making many Pati requests unnecessary
Independent senator John Wight was also critical
He said: “Too often the public get deprived of information they should be able to get
I found myself disagreeing with the reasons why this legislation is better and more efficient
She said that she had also questioned the need for fees
but felt confident that the Government was not attempting to deter Pati applications
She echoed earlier concerns by MPs about “vexatious applications”
suggesting that some Pati requests were made to embarrass the Government and were not submitted “with good purpose”
all three independent senators ultimately chose to back it
and voted with the five on the government side
while the opposition senators went against
The Bill was passed by eight votes to three
One other piece of legislation was rubber-stamped by senators during the session
The Employment Amendment Act 2024 will increase severance allowance payments from 26 weeks to 32 for staff who have been in continuous work with an employer for 13 years or more
the Government’s finance spokeswoman in the Senate
said the increase would give those who have been made redundant more time to look for work
She said the Government recognised the rising cost of doing business in Bermuda
but emphasised that employers had to provide a minimum standard
the One Bermuda Alliance issued a statement questioning the new Pati rules
said that the system was “an important tool to increase the Government’s accountability and transparency”
He added that changes would hamper its ability to keep the public informed
it was Pati that enabled Bermuda to find out that $16.5 million of taxpayers’ money has been wasted on the failed Gaming Commission
“It was Pati that enabled Bermuda to learn how the Government had to step in and pay $11 million of severance payments that Gencom could not
“It was Pati that enabled to Bermuda to learn the details of how Belco pollution was affecting Pembroke residents
and the problems with the Historical Land Loss Commission of Inquiry
“These are just some of the many topics of important public interest that we learnt from Pati
and which the Government would have preferred you not to know
fought tooth and nail to hide any and all information from the public
Pati is not just for the newspapers and politicians
It’s also for Mr and Mrs Smith who need to get information about how government has treated them
or a civil servant or member of the uniformed services who may not have been treated fairly
“Government says that the proposed changes are ‘the same’ as those in other jurisdictions
The Information Commissioner says they ‘fall short of the comprehensive and well-established legislative frameworks found in other jurisdictions’
and ‘lack important and well-established safeguards’
“Other jurisdictions have better support and funding for their Pati equivalents
and better rules that make government information public by default
“This alone would reduce the so-called administrative burden from Pati
the One Bermuda Alliance pledges to be a government that is accountable to the people
including open data portals for financial records
“So ask yourself: why is the Government trying to make it easier to hide from you?”
