This research reveals the serious sanitation problems faced by Indonesia's coastal communities
better sanitation can improve the quality of life of coastal communities
adorned with orange rays reflecting on the surface of the sea
their joyous laughter mingling with the sound of the waves
there lies a harsh reality often hidden from those who only see the coast as a tourist destination
Upon closer examination of several coastal areas in Indonesia
it becomes evident that the daily lives of these communities are fraught with serious challenges—none more pressing than poor sanitation management
is home to thousands of coastal communities
many of these coastal populations continue to struggle with urgent environmental hygiene issues
from unsafe drinking water to the prevalent practice of open defecation
This issue is not merely about sanitation; it concerns basic human rights and the right to a dignified life
Percut Sei Tuan District in North Sumatra Province is one such example
where the sanitation problems of coastal communities are glaring
and Lita Sri Andayani to carry out their community service obligation as part of the Tri Dharma of higher education
They highlighted the dire state of sanitation management in this coastal area
only 7.42% of households in Indonesia have access to safe and equitable sanitation
approximately 25.42% still lack adequate sanitation
and 9.36% continue to practice open defecation without proper facilities
painting a stark picture of the urgent situation
Many families live in conditions far below acceptable sanitation standards
a situation that directly contradicts the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The coastal communities of Percut Sei Tuan not only face economic challenges but also severe health risks
The poor sanitation system directly impacts their health
Researchers found that due to inadequate hygiene conditions
many residents suffer from various health issues
including waterborne diseases such as diarrhea and gastrointestinal infections
“These conditions not only threaten health but also lives
especially for children who are more vulnerable to infections due to unhygienic environments,” explained Susilawati in her research
as caretakers of households and family health
play a crucial role in sanitation management
The challenges they face include limited access to adequate sanitation facilities
often forcing them to make extra efforts to maintain family hygiene
especially when the surrounding environment does not support them
The role of the government and community leaders in addressing this issue has been deemed insufficient
Although numerous initiatives have been undertaken
who ideally should act as drivers of behavioral change at the grassroots level
often play only marginal roles in improving environmental sanitation
The research data not only depict the alarming state of sanitation but also attempt to understand the factors that influence community behavior in managing their sanitation
the study involved more than 500,000 households
with 414 randomly selected as samples to obtain representative data
This research revealed that factors such as residential status
and socio-cultural and economic factors all contribute to community sanitation behavior
One key finding was that social and cultural practices strongly influence sanitation behavior
Cultural values and norms within a community can affect how they view cleanliness and health
in communities with strong traditional values
open defecation may be considered normal and not something that needs to be addressed
This is where community and religious leaders should step in to educate the public that poor sanitation can affect the health of the entire community,” explained Hamdani
this issue cannot be resolved without adequate infrastructure
While the community may wish to change their behavior
access to clean water and proper toilets remains a significant problem
Many households still rely on unsafe water sources or even directly from the sea
Hamdani and his team proposed one key solution emphasized in this study: the importance of a holistic approach to addressing sanitation issues in coastal areas
Providing facilities alone is not enough; interventions must involve all elements of society
from the government and community leaders to individuals within households
plays a crucial role in providing adequate infrastructure
this effort will not succeed without active participation from the community itself
Behavioral change cannot be forced but must be approached through persuasive and educational methods
can serve as effective bridges between government programs and the community
the involvement of women in sanitation management must also receive more attention
As those often responsible for household cleanliness
women should be involved in the planning and implementation of sanitation programs
This does not mean that men’s roles can be ignored
is crucial in creating sustainable change,” said Hamdani
Coastal communities may appear peaceful and serene from the outside
Sanitation is just one of the many problems they face daily
it can bring about significant changes in their quality of life
This study shows that with the right approach
It requires strong cooperation from various parties
from the government providing the facilities to the community willing to change their behavior
community leaders must take a more active role in driving change at the grassroots level
“The hope for the future is that coastal life will not only be known for its natural beauty but also for its cleanliness and healthy environment
sanitation in coastal areas can be improved
enabling communities to live healthier and more dignified lives
a better future for coastal communities is not impossible,” concluded Hamdani

TEMPO.CO, Medan - The North Sumatra Regional Police's Narcotics Crime Directorate arrested a drug mule
Andi was captured at a fisherman's hut on Silobaru Street
The police confiscated 2 kilograms of methamphetamine packaged in Chinese Guanyiwang brand tea plastic
The arrest followed a tip from the public about someone bringing narcotics to Silobaru Village
The police went to the location and arrested Andi
Andi claimed to be a mule acting on instructions from Mail
the drugs were obtained from a Malaysian named Ling-ling Tan and were intended to be transported to Percutseituan by land
Director of the Narcotics Crime Directorate of the North Sumatra Regional Police
stated that they are still pursuing Mail and delving into the involvement of a Malaysian citizen Ling-ling Tan in this network
"We will further investigate this case to uncover the network involved
Cross-country drug trafficking like this is very dangerous and damages the younger generation," said Yemi on Tuesday
The North Sumatra Regional Police is committed to eradicating drug trafficking to its roots
the police also take repressive actions by closing down locations known as drug trafficking hubs
"The North Sumatra Regional Police is committed to eradicating drugs in this area
from large-scale drug dealers to the smallest levels
If there is any resistance that poses a danger
including measured shootings," said the Head of Public Relations of the North Sumatra Regional Police
Police Grand Commissioner Yudhi Surya Markus
Night patrols continue to be intensified in vulnerable areas to prevent drug trafficking and other criminal acts
These efforts are coupled with massive public awareness campaigns targeting the public
and religious figures to highlight the dangers of drugs
community involvement and collaboration with other stakeholders are crucial for suppressing drug trafficking in North Sumatra
This commitment is evidenced by the revelation of 398 drug cases throughout January 2025
consisting of 111 users and 408 traffickers
"Evidence seized includes 5.17 kilograms of methamphetamine
The North Sumatra Regional Police call on all elements of the community to actively provide information regarding suspected drug trafficking in their environment," he added

The Indonesian government has identified and secured funds to restore 600,000 hectares of damaged mangrove areas in 2021–2024 in 9 provinces
This gave birth to the idea and was the background for the Professor Mengabdi activity carried out by USU lecturers
namely by empowering the abundant former ponds in Tanjung Rejo Village
The USU Professor Mengabdi Community Service Team
Ph.D (USU Faculty of Forestry) with members Prof
Dwi Suryanto (USU Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) and Ipanna Enggar Susetya
assisted by three USU Forestry Masters Program students (Yuntha Bimantara
and five USU Forestry and Aquatic Resources Management Undergraduate Program students
carried out ecology and hydrology-based planting activities
a local resident who is the head of a fishermen's group
planted 2,000 Avicennia spp (api-api) seedlings
consisting of Avicennia alba and Avicennia marina
This community service activity also synergizes with the research of 3 undergraduate students who studied the effect of restoration activities on changes in biota
which was carried out before and after (3 months) after the restoration activity
Although it is recognized that restoration failures may have occurred in the past
no specific study evaluates past restorations to guide future targets effectively
when visited by the USU Professor Mengabdi Community Service Team
agreed when their abandoned ponds were used for restoration activities and
could be used for silvofishery ponds or used as a model for the success of mangrove restoration in former ponds
This study includes measuring vegetation analysis
and measuring pond water's physical and chemical properties
The natural mangrove forest adjacent to the pond location and ponds with natural regeneration of Avicenni seedlings next to them are used as a reference or standard
The Professor Mengabdi community service activity is expected to solve partner problems and be an initial step in utilizing ponds for conservation activities by restoring the ecological and hydrological approach
It will be monitored periodically using water loggers and mini buoys
The Professor Mengabdi community service scheme is expected to contribute to restoration activities and also become a model for restoring former ponds that are not functioning properly by improving water management (pond gates) and fortifications
and measuring the success of restoration (before and after the ecological and hydrological approach is applied)
One of the main motivations for mangrove restoration is to restore the high value of the mangrove ecosystem for biodiversity and various ecosystem services such as coastal protection
and other products that directly and indirectly benefit local and global residents
Deforestation has negatively impacted 16% of global mangrove forests and endangered species (Richards & Friess
2016) and reduced mangrove biodiversity and carbon storage in forest biomass (Polidoro et al.
Mangrove conservation and sustainable mangrove management are needed to maintain the existence of mangrove forests and improve rehabilitation and restoration programs

Singapore is the only place that comes to mind – there’s no way these uniquely Singaporean things exist in other parts of the world
Well if you ever find yourself in the city of Medan
you may come across these very icons at what they’ve dubbed as “Singapore of Medan”
the estate has various replicas of signature Singaporean attractions and places that’ll have you going
Who knew our beloved half-lion-half-fish icon had a long-lost twin in Indonesia
Meet the equally handsome Merlion of The Merlion Park in the Singapore of Medan
It is quite astonishing to see carbon copy outside of Singapore
but it really does look like the one we have back home down to the little details
people will always strike the same poses for photos
The sight of these will have the blood of any Singaporean driver boiling – thankfully this ERP gantry labelled CLGC in Medan is a non-functional replica
As much as the majority of us try to avoid it
we’ve got to admit that the ERP system is definitely something that’s unique to us
If they’ve got the ERP gantry, then they have to have the roads to go with it too. And what more of an iconic road to choose if not Orchard Road
It’s quite bizarre not seeing rows of malls and shops in the background of the street sign though
or Clarke Quay will definitely raise some eyebrows
or they own a property in one of these residential clusters in Little Singapore
80sqm house in Medan’s Fullerton will cost you about Rp1,585,000,000 (~S$143,837)
A landed property of the equivalent size in Singapore would cost you upwards of a million SGD – and that’s not even in the same area as Singapore’s Fullerton
they thankfully left out Singapore’s residential property prices
We’ve got to applaud the Singapore of Medan for the effort in replicating the icons of our country
the estate comes complete with duplicates of Suntec City’s Fountain of Wealth
We’d even go as far as to say visitors might fool their friends into thinking their photos weren’t actually taken at this Little Singapore in Indonesia
It makes us wonder if the residents of CitraLand Gama City will also be able to replicate our Singaporean spirit of kanciongness and kiasuness in their everyday lives
For other stories on things uniquely Singapore

singaporeImitation the highest form of flattery? This Indonesia housing estate has ERP gantry, Merlion and moreAn 'ERP gantry' in Medan, Indonesia.PHOTO: Screengrab from Reddit/TheArstotzkanPUBLISHED ONJune 24, 2022 3:36 AMByAmierul RashidSingaporeans
if you're in Indonesia and find yourself missing home
head on over to 'The Singapore of Medan'
This housing estate located in the Percut Sei Tuan district of Medan City has Singapore landmarks galore
While a number of Indonesian YouTubers have been raving about it since 2020
photos of the housing estate resurfaced on Reddit on Thursday (June 23) and amused netizens
To say that this neighbourhood is inspired by Singapore might be an understatement
Visitors will be greeted by landmarks such as the iconic arches of the Fullerton Hotel and the Merlion in estate clusters named after locations such as Fullerton
Orchard Boulevard street signs to an ERP gantry
one might actually feel they've been transported to Singapore if they squint hard enough
Photos of 'Singapore of Medan' piqued the curiosity of netizens from both Indonesia and Singapore
Redditors on the SingaporeRaw section generally found the images rather amusing and flattering even
with one writing "imitation is the highest form of flattery"
a number of Indonesian netizens cringed at the thought of a housing estate fully inspired by Singapore
one netizen said that "people like this place and it's always crowded almost every week"
The popularity of the housing estate led to the developer releasing the fourth cluster named Clarke Quay last June. According to Indonesian news publication Kompas, this cluster covers an area of 8.6 hectares and has a resort-style lake view

TYSON FURY has taken a cheeky dig at Andy Ruiz Jr ahead of his showdown with Anthony Joshua - by claiming he looks like a grown-up version of the kid from Disney film Up.
The 29-year-old was confirmed as AJ's opponent on June 1 at Madison Square Garden after Jarrell Miller failed three separate drug tests.
Ruiz Jr has come under fire over his weight before, with the Mexican-American heavyweight branded as a "fat slob" by Bob Arum in the past.
And Fury has chipped in with his critique of the former world title challenger - who lost against Joseph Parker with the WBO title on the line in December 2016.
Uploading a picture of Russell the boy scout from Up on his Instagram story, Fury said: "Remember the kid from Up.
"He’s now all grown up and is fighting Anthony Joshua for the world heavyweight title."
Ruiz Jr is confident at upsetting the odds next month and branded Joshua a "robot" as he looks to become the unified champion.
He said: "I think being so tall he fights like a big robot. I think with my style, my speed, my movement, I don’t think he’s fought anybody like me.
Remember the kid from Up. He’s now all grown up and is fighting Anthony Joshua for the world heavyweight title."
“It’s going to be a whole different ball game. All the guys that he’s fought, they usually run around from him.
"I don’t think he’s good going back. I’m going to bring the pressure, the speed, and the combinations to him.
“When I do pull out this win, everything is going to change. I’m going to bring the titles back to Mexico, it’s going to mean everything.
“I’m going to be able to change my whole family’s lives - my life and all my kids. It’s a win-win situation right now, but the main thing is to win the fight and make history.”
While Joshua assured fans that he is fully confident of racking up his 23rd victory in style when he fights in America for the first time.
“We have worked in the boxing gym week on week and whomever is put in front of me at Madison Square Garden on June 1 will be dispatched in style
