The issue of pesticide residue in Shine Muscat grapes has been widely discussed in recent times. The Food and Drug Administration claims to be investigating the case
In addition to being asked to limit consumption of Shine Muscat grapes
residents must wash other fruit products thoroughly before consuming them
Thai Pesticide Alert Network (Thai-PAN) together with the Consumer Council of Thailand (TCC) and the Food and Drug Administration of Thailand on October 24, 2024 detected high pesticide residues in testing 23 out of 24 samples of Shine Muscat grape products
even the prohibited hazardous chemical compounds were found
there are other hazardous chemical compounds
there has been an issue circulating about pesticide residue levels exceeding safe limits in grapes that have recently become popular and widely consumed by residents
BPOM said the chemical compound content is dangerous for the body
has been designated as a compound with a moderate hazard category for humans
The impact on the body can disrupt the nervous system
Endrin aldehyde is also an organic pollutant that has been banned in many countries
This chemical compound can be stored in body fat which can have a negative impact on the central nervous system which can cause seizures and death
The use of chemical pesticides in agricultural and plantation products is currently increasingly difficult to separate
Claimed to be easier and more profitable to control various types of pests
chemical pesticides are prone to triggering adverse effects when exposed to humans
From mild symptoms such as nausea to damage to the nervous system

Researcher of Surabaya Plantation Seed and Protection Center, Bayu Refindra Fitriadi, in the article "Powerful Tricks to Reduce Pesticide Residue Levels" published by Ministry of Agriculture
said that one easy and simple mitigation is to ensure that vegetables and fruits are washed properly
This can be done with special soap or natural ingredients
"Although special soap for washing vegetables and fruits is considered effective in reducing pesticide residues
some groups advocate for natural washing agents," said Bayu
Cut away any damaged or bruised areas on fruits or vegetables before handling or preparing them
Rinse the produce thoroughly under running water before peeling
Bayu mentioned that the ingredients are not difficult to find
vinegar water and baking soda water can also be used
Bayu reminded not to wash vegetables and fruits before they are ready to be consumed
The reason is that washing vegetables and fruits and then storing them will only trigger bacterial growth

it is important to follow food safety steps
clean and sanitize the sink and other surfaces or utensils that will come into contact with the food

heavy rain for several days resulted in water in the Lusi River exceeding capacity and overflowing
flooding residential areas and the main roads in the city center of Purwodadi District
Floods were also caused by water coming from upstream areas
which initially inundated 40 villages in 12 districts
on Saturday (16/3/2024) expanded to a total of 113 villages in 13 districts affected
68 percent of Grobogan Regency has been affected by floods
rendering the city center in Purwodadi paralyzed
Vehicles belonging to residents can be seen driving through floodwaters on Semarang-Grobogan Road in Gubug District

Flood disasters resulting from the breach of levees have also occurred in the Demak Regency
The neighboring district of Grobogan also experienced flood disasters in mid-March
The high intensity of rainfall and the breakage of the levee at the Dombo River in Menur Village
has exacerbated the second flood to hit this year
65,109 people have been affected and 2,163 individuals displaced
The affected infrastructure includes 73 places of worship
Floods also occurred in the Demak area in early February
the strong current of water caused 10 points of embankments in several rivers to break
The influx of water from several breached embankments caused floods that inundated residential areas up to a height of 2 meters
It is reported that 35 villages in 7 districts

after the levee of a dam in the village collapsed due to the inability to contain the heavy rainfall runoff
water with a height of around 1 meter mixed with mud swept through a residential area
According to the temporary records of BPBD Pekalongan
and 50 houses were lightly damaged (Kompas.id
Another pantura region that was hit by floods twice this year is Brebes Regency
Floods with heights up to 1 meter submerged 23 villages in 7 sub-districts due to high intensity rainfall on Sunday (25/2/2024)
Continuous heavy rain has caused an increase in the water levels of the Cigunung and Pemali Rivers
causing the water to overflow into residential areas and farmland
As many as 30,556 residents from 8,358 households have been affected
Another flood disaster occurred on Wednesday (6/3/2024) in several villages in Losari District
Hundreds of houses were reported to be submerged in flood waters

Based on the results of mapping carried out by the Cimanuk-Cisanggarung River Basin Center (BBWS)
there are 93 river embankments that are vulnerable to breaking in Brebes Regency
while the other 68 embankments have not been handled (Kompas
The information has signaled that the repair of the levee must be immediately addressed in order to prevent wider impacts and trigger floods if it breaks
The breaching of the river dam that caused floods in several areas in Central Java recently serves as a reminder to regularly check vulnerable levees as a precautionary measure
Regular checks and maintenance are needed to prevent embankment landslides at various points that can cause river siltation and reduce embankment capacity
Considering the occurrence of embankment breaches due to weather conditions
an evaluation of embankment capacity that is adjusted in the event of potential extreme floods should also be carried out
Especially with the weather forecast from BMKG mentioning Central Java as one of the areas under the alert category predicted to be overshadowed by extreme weather such as heavy rain accompanied by strong winds that could cause hydro-meteorological disasters
BMKG has detected the emergence of three tropical cyclone seeds in the vicinity of Indonesia
This condition has the potential to cause extreme weather in several regions of Indonesia until early next week (14-18 March 2024)
Residential areas located below the embankment were affected when the Tuntang River overflowed in Gubug District
Heavy rain with high intensity in the upstream area caused flooding in several areas
Some river levees are also vulnerable to collapsing
which could potentially cause flooding in residential areas
Three sikon seeds are the tropical cyclone seeds 91S
and 93P that are monitored around the southern Indian Ocean of Java
All of them have shown the impact on the southern region of Indonesia
the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) activity in quadrant 4 contributes to the growth of strong convective clouds in the Central Java region
This also affects the increase in potential for extreme weather
Based on the record of the Central Java BPBD
extreme weather is the biggest contributor to disasters in the region throughout 2024
In order not to cause a wider disaster and more victims
prevention efforts by maintaining embankments are a good anticipatory step

(ANS – Purwodadi) – The youngest Salesian presence in Indonesia in Purwodadi opened in 2015 and the canonical community with the first rector (Fr
Anto) was established only last summer 2017 in this Central Java town around the 60 year-old Junior High School of Bhaktia Mulia
Three priests and two practical trainees are animating a small town Catholic School of 50 students after the invitation of Bishop of Purwokerto
In the context of the SDB Indonesia delegation this is probably the least visited community - a true periphery
The Valdocco-like Salesian presence among the poor young people in the rural area (500 km from Jakarta and 300 km from our Blitar City school) brings the best of our Charism into life
Our 20 teachers (Christians and Muslims) admire the family spirit and team work of our confreres that does
Five Salesians live and pray together with 6 boarding Catholics (grades 7-9) and their simple and inspiring life becomes also a vocation invitation
the local parish (MSC - Missionary of the Sacred Heart) priest requested our contribution to the youth ministry and Purwodadi Oratory is being born
Since September 2017 four animators have been taking care of about 30 young Catholics in twice-a-month Oratory events with a formative touch
In this way the Salesian spirit is being shared in the local Church
Salesian community of Purwodadi has also great dreams: to attract more students
to improve the infrastructures and education environment of the school
to build a decent (not emergency-like) community house
is also famous for almost annual floods with schools finding themselves often under 50-60 cm of water
The Salesians also pray for the possible purchase of land for a larger sports field or extension of this rather small school campus
Indeed the main dream and action requested is to share our preventive system of education and spirituality with many mission partners and young people

Growing up in a small village in Eastern Lampung in Indonesia was an abundant
On the edge of the Way Kambas National Park conservation area
a young Heri Apriyanto and his friends played in the forests and rice fields within ear shot from the wildlife of the park – Sumatran elephants
As a boy scout he would often camp in the lush forests and developed a special affinity with nature
These trips were also lessons in caring about conservation and how to treat our environment respectfully
It was here where he fell in love with nature and these experiences shaped him into the independent person he is today
With a childhood so intertwined with nature
these early memories would become an important cornerstone to Heri’s professional career
a friend introduced him to the personal computer and told him
“With IT you can do anything that you want
You can explore the world and help more people.” He became enamoured with computer software and the endless possibilities it posed
and ultimately made a decision to combine two great passions
Conservation remains an essential component in his work now at Indonesia’s Purwodadi Botanic Gardens
Heri has delved more into horticulture and plant care with the opportunity to collaborate with researchers at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences and their united passion for plants and conservation
In his role as IT Project Manager and Software Developer
Heri builds the infrastructure and provides support to manage and analyse the plants collections in botanic gardens
implementing his knack and expertise in IT to support development in conservation and plant collection management
The decision to study at the University of South Australia was partly based on a seed of an idea Heri had been developing in an effort to track and computerise an all-encompassing and accessible system to keep track of plants
He refined the plan by enrolling in a Master of Information Technology at UniSA through the Australia Awards Scholarship
The Australia Awards Scholarships are long-term development awards supported by the Australian Government and offer emerging leaders in developing countries the opportunity to undertake full-time study in Australia in priority fields to build networks to drive change and contribute to development
I wrote about a concept for an information system that can be used to manage and record plants collections in Indonesian botanical gardens to develop proper conservation and care,” Heri says
teams who tend to the plants can easily create daily reports of conditions
any signs of diseases or pests harming the plants
and the need for water and fertilisation.”
“These daily reports are invaluable information as they create patterns that can be analysed to develop informed decisions
Evidence-based support systems are vital for a flourishing botanical garden with issues occurring like the best time to water and prune plants
the best soil conditions for particular plants
which doesn’t exist currently in an automated form.”
Makoyana (Manajemen Koleksi Kebun Raya Indonesia) or in English the Management of Plants Collections for Indonesian Botanical Garden)
is even more necessary when considering Indonesia’s environment
The country is an archipelago home to 276 million people containing more than 12 per cent of the world’s flora – however
much of that population is also currently considered endangered species
Appropriate treatment is essential to conserve these valuable collections of plants that litter Indonesia’s beautiful network of Botanic Gardens
The country also has a significant amount of flora in ex-situ (off-site) conservation conditions and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences is often the last hope for these plant species that don’t exist anywhere else in the world
“Catching the disease or identifying certain conditions beginning to emerge among plant populations early is so important to then implement an effective healing process or prevention treatment as quickly as possible to avoid such issues in the future,” Heri says
“Knowing exact details of blossom times
we can predict when to prepare and collect seeds for the seeding process
either in ex-situ conversation sites or herbariums to also secure their future and sustainability.”
Heri and his team have constructed the easy-to-use front-end interface and conducted a soft launched of the Makoyana system
He’s also recently implemented a popular education program to encourage students to learn more about the plant collections in Purwodadi Botanical Garden based on the popular Pokémon Go mobile app game
Heri has play a significant role in improving the accountability and transparency at the organisation too
supporting their corruption prevention campaign
by developing a financial system and one-gate public services system for the Botanic Gardens
All while spearheading the major national plant management project
“As a public servant in this conservation area
I really love my role in the Botanic Gardens.”
“All these IT software systems we have developed have succeeded in serving the great public services our institution provides
The satisfaction and opportunities like this are why I’ve greatly enjoyed this role for almost 10 years.”
He’s not resting on his laurels just yet
Heri is still passionate and committed to innovating with his plant collection management system
helping his community and providing vital information about flora biodiversity and conservation in Indonesia
“The implementation of the system in the four national Botanic Gardens on behalf of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences and the 34 local Botanic Gardens throughout the rest of the country does involve a lot of many effort and energy
but I also hope to further develop an Artificial Intelligence component level to support the decision making process.”
“I believe that IT can be solution to address all issues in the plants conservation sector
IT can help my country to protect our biodiversity
the IT sector not only as a tool in people’s personal life
but also a solution for so many of our problems in this world.”
“Information is more valuable than gold.”
