With a Catholic population of 800,000 out of one million inhabitants
Ruteng stands out as the largest Catholic diocese in Indonesia
a predominantly Muslim nation of 17,000 islands
Known as the “diocese of a thousand congregations,” Ruteng boasts a robust presence of religious institutes
This strong religious foundation has even drawn the attention of Pope Francis
who in 2022 referred to Flores as a potential source of vocations for the global Church
one could go ‘to the island of Indonesia (Flores
In an interview with the Vatican's Fides News Agency
Bishop Ciprianus Hormat of Ruteng highlighted the vibrant seminary life in the region.
while in the nearby diocese of Labuan Bajo
Many boys want to enter every year,” the Bishop said.
He noted that although the seminaries are primarily strong middle schools
they remain “a place where faith is cultivated and vocational discernment is done.”
Bishop Hormat further explained the natural progression of vocations in the diocese
“It is true and physiological that the percentage of those who continue the journey from the minor seminary to the major seminary is 40 or 50 percent
but it is right that it be so,” he said.
The prelate added that the young men “must listen to and explore God’s will in their lives and follow their path
these are important years for human and Christian formation
a heritage that they carry with them for life.”
The diocese’s pastoral landscape is equally impressive
as well as more than 1,000 consecrated women from around 50 congregations of female religious.
we thank the Portuguese and Dutch missionaries who brought and preached the Gospel in all the villages,” said Bishop Hormat
adding that the local Church has been self-sufficient since 1991
the Catholic Church in Ruteng is also a major player in education
“There are 265 elementary schools and 20 high schools in the diocese attended by thousands of students
in addition to many other educational works
the Church has been an institution that promotes quality education here
and the first schools established in the region were Catholic,” the Bishop remarked
The recent completion of the Catholic University of San Paolo is seen as a key milestone
“It has quickly become a crucial point of reference for our young people,” Bishop Hormat noted
Ruteng’s wealth of vocations extends beyond its borders
The diocese actively participates in Indonesia’s “missio domestica” program
sending priests to under-served regions such as Papua
“We put this wealth at the service of the Church in Indonesia and the universal Church,” the Bishop said
There is a special pastoral agreement with Holland
which allows Ruteng priests to work in the Netherlands for a few years before returning home as fidei donum priests
“The gift of vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life is always a mystery; it is God who calls,” Bishop Hormat emphasized
“Accompanying young people to the priesthood is not just for us
but for the benefit of the entire ecclesial community
Ruteng’s ongoing commitment to the global Church is rooted in its historical ties to Dutch missionaries
Bishop Hormat fondly remembered the last Dutch bishop to serve Ruteng
who led the diocese from 1951 to 1972.
“The memory of the good work done by the last Dutch bishop is still alive in our hearts
We express our gratitude today by continuing the work of these missionaries,” he said

Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) ternyata mempunyai warisan situs prasejarah manusia purba
Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) ternyata mempunyai warisan situs prasejarah manusia purba
until now rector of the local Catholic University of St
Paul. The territory is among the few in the archipelago where the Catholic presence is predominant (215 thousand out of a population of 276 thousand). The decision is linked to a "better pastoral service" for the community of the faithful
Jakarta (AsiaNews) - Indonesian Christians are celebrating a new diocese in the country
in the Catholic-majority area of Flores Island
in the province of East NUsa Tenggara (Ntt)
and appointed as its first bishop the Reverend Maksimus Regus
Hundreds of faithful and dozens of priests attended the announcement made by Bishop Siprianus Hormat
in the Church of the Holy Spirit in Labuan Bajo
in an atmosphere of joy that involved the entire community
The new diocese of Labuan Bajo covers an area that is now a popular tourist destination
it was still a remote area in the westernmost sector of the Indonesian archipelago that was predominantly mountainous
it is one of the most popular exotic holiday destinations
so much so that it has received comments and attention from local and international travellers
it is a driving force for the tourism sector throughout the country
The new diocese of Labuan Bajo has a territorial extension of 3141 km2
a population of almost 276,000 people of which more than 215,000 are Catholics
plus 30 seminarians and 19 other non-priest religious
The prelate attended the Pontifical Roman Minor Seminary Pius XII and studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Major Seminary St
He was ordained to the priesthood on 10 August 2001
after which he held various positions and deepened his studies
including: parish vicar of Christ the King (2001-2007); chairman of the diocesan commission for youth pastoral work and member of the diocesan commission for interreligious dialogue (2002-2007); higher studies at the faculty of socio-political sciences at Universitas Indonesia
Depok (2007); studies in social sciences at the Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam and ad Doctoratum studies at the Universiteit van Tilburg (Netherlands
201-2017); since 2018 he has been a lecturer at the Catholic University of Saint Paul
and dean of the Faculty of Education and Formative Sciences (2019-2023); finally
since 2020 he has been coordinator of the diocesan priests in Ruteng
The new diocese - whose formation process started three years ago on the recommendation of the local synod - borrows part of its territory from that of Ruteng
one of the few areas of the country where Catholics are predominant with over 966,000 faithful
A request transmitted by Mgr Hormat during his ad limina visit and welcomed by the pontiff
confirming the importance of the region for the local Church
Labuan Bajo is located within the district of West Manggarai
which means that it will most likely become the pastoral territory of the new diocese
Addressing the faithful at the time of the announcement of the new diocese and its first bishop
Bishop Hormat said that the establishment of Labuan Bajo was done for 'better pastoral service'
with the new territory there will also be some unresolved issues to be settled on the 'management' of some 'properties'
including: the Sukma Foundation with its pastoral school; the Sukmatim Foundation with the Kisol Minor Seminary; the Sukmamabar Foundation with the St John Paul II Seminary; and the Ernesto Foundation with its high schools
I must admit that I am a sinner and for this I need your support and prayers," emphasised the new Bishop Maksimus Regus as he greeted the community

(ANS – Ruteng) – The first goal of the Salesians is to serve the Church and young people
the Salesians are happy to accept whatever work could be given to them
because they are serving the Catholic community with the charism of Don Bosco by evangelizing poor young people and encouraging vocations
after the first exploratory visit last October 2019 to the three dioceses of Flores Island (Ruteng
Louis Versiglia” (INA) Vice-province Superior
emerging as the possible new presence of the Salesians of Indonesia in this mostly Christian island located in the Eastern part of Indonesia (East Nusa Tenggara)
On 14 September both of them traveled from Jakarta to Ruteng - the capital of Manggarai district
In Ruteng they met the recently ordained Bishop
there was an official meeting with the bishop
who opened the meeting by greeting both Salesians and presented his large diocese and its history
which goes back to the early years of the 20th century
The Catholic faith has been planted there since the first baptism on 17 May 1912 in Jengkalang
then with the establishment of mission schools in Labuan Bajo
slowly developed into the Ruteng Apostolic Vicariate
and officially became the Ruteng Diocese on 3 January 1961
with its first bishop Wilhelmus Van Beckkum
is the fifth bishop of Ruteng and the fourth son of Manggarai
Ruteng diocese has 89.7% Catholics - 851,609 of a population of 950,000
with 176 diocesan priests and 116 religious priests (SVD
divided into 86 parishes and 4 deaneries: Ruteng
Most of the religious houses are concentrated in the city of Ruteng – 54 of them
Fr Wong continued the exchange with gratitude for his welcome and hospitality
The INA Provincial said that since he was appointed as the Salesian Superior of Indonesia
he observed that many Salesians came from eastern Indonesia and particularly from Flores
Then he began to consult different diocesan priests
bishops and also the Papal Nuncio in Jakarta
There was a converging suggestion to open ministries in Flores
All of those consulted indicated Ruteng diocese as a place to be and to serve for the Salesians
In the following discussion in which also the Vicar General Fr Alfons Segar and Fr Max Haber were involved
some possible kinds of apostolic work were spoken of that might be fitting for the Salesian charism in Ruteng diocese: parish
TVET (non-formal vocation training centre)
centre of Marian devotion (there is a strong Marian devotion in Flores)
and then they visited the Minor Seminary of Pius XII in Kisol: 400 students of junior and senior high school
The visitors were introduced to classrooms
There were two points that struck them: the young seminarians are well-educated from a spiritual
intellectual and human perspective; also the well-prepared (MA degree in education in many fields of languages
counselling or guidance) formators both priests and practical training brothers or clerics from the diocese
as well as from several religious congregations
the candidates could see a variety of different spiritualities during their stay
the graduates of Kisol minor seminary are much appreciated in the local Church
Fr Wong and Br Mei traveled back to Labuan Bajo and also had time to look at the Minor St
the second exploratory trip to Flores ended and both visitors returned to Jakarta by Batik Air
“We ask your prayers during this delicate period of discernment
where and how to start our first Salesian presence on Flores island,” Br Mei concludes

(ANS – Ruteng) – On Friday morning
finished their five-day exploration in the Diocese of Ruteng
The area of the Diocese occupies the west part of Flores Island
The island itself is part of the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia whose eastern part was hit by a cyclone and flash floods recently
The trip is a follow-up to the invitation of the Bishop
for SDB Indonesia to open a work in the diocese
They visited five potential locations offered for SDB and listened to the presentations and inputs from the Pastoral Center
and the clergy of the Diocese to discern together what kind of work and where is the place for the Salesians to start working in the Diocese
to answer the need of the local Church with the contribution of the Salesian charism and mission for the good of the young people in particular
The process ended with a personal meeting with the Bishop
and the local people are enthusiastic about the plan and they are looking forward for Salesians to come soon to start their service
This will be the first presence of SDB on the Flores Island whose population is predominantly Catholic
The Salesian presence in Indonesia dates back to 1985
when the first missionary pioneers arrived there from the Philippines
Their sowing was fruitful and today there are 64 religious belonging to the "St Luigi Versiglia" Vice Province of Indonesia (INA)
of which 11 temporarily in another Province (and among them several missionaries ad gentes)
in the vast and varied Indonesian archipelago
the Sons of Don Bosco are present with seven houses scattered over only two islands: Blitar
Tigasarka and the two centers in the capital of Jakarta-Sunter and Jakarta Wisma
all on the island of Java; and then the house of Sumba
The INA Vice Province was erected in 2018 by detachment from the "St Callisto Caravario" Vice Province of Indonesia-East Timor (ITM)
within which it was previously constituted as a Provincial Delegation
