Samarinda. Heavy flooding has inundated multiple areas in Samarinda, East Kutai Regency, and Kutai Kartanegara Regency over the past week, forcing thousands to evacuate and cutting off major roads.
In Samarinda, floods have affected five subdistricts: Samarinda Utara, Sungai Pinang, Samarinda Ulu, Sungai Kunjang, and Loa Janan Ilir. Water has submerged 22 locations, including Lempake, Sungai Siring, Bukuan, Air Putih, Air Hitam, Lembuswana, Pramuka, Gerilya, Lempake Jaya, Brigjen Katamso, Loa Janan Ilir, Damai, Loa Bakung, Bukit Pinang, Karang Asam Ulu, and Sungai Keledang.
The floods also reached Pampang Cultural Village, a well-known Dayak cultural tourism destination in Samarinda.
According to the Samarinda City Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the floods have affected 4,414 people, with floodwaters reaching up to 1 meter in some areas. The Samarinda-Bontang main road has been cut off due to rising water levels, while continuous heavy rainfall has triggered landslides in Sidodamai Village.
BPBD Head Suwarso stated that 16 inflatable boats have been deployed to evacuate residents in affected areas. These boats are provided by the Fire Department, the Indonesian National Army (TNI), the National Police, and various volunteer groups.
“We have deployed 16 units in collaboration with volunteers, the Fire Department, and BPBD teams from both the city and provincial levels, with additional boats arriving as well,” Suwarso said.
Failu, Head of the Fire and Rescue Department of East Kutai, urged residents to remain vigilant, as crocodiles and snakes often emerge during floods.
“We are on high alert because all river streams in this region have the potential to be crocodile habitats. If there are reports from the community, we respond immediately,” he said in Sangatta on Thursday.
East Kutai is home to large rivers that serve as natural crocodile habitats. Even before the floods, authorities frequently removed crocodiles from residential areas. The rising water levels in the Sangatta River have led to more frequent crocodile sightings in populated areas.
"So far, there have been no reports of attacks, and the situation remains safe. However, we must remain cautious because crocodiles can appear at any time. We are actively monitoring the situation and setting up traps if necessary,” Failu added.
In Kutai Kartanegara Regency, flooding has impacted two subdistricts: Loa Duri in Loa Janan Subdistrict and Central Tengah in Marang Kayu Subdistrict.
Abdal, Head of the Logistics and Disaster Management Division of the Kutai Kartanegara Disaster Mitigation Agency, reported that authorities are closely monitoring the flood situation. In Loa Duri Ilir village, floodwaters have reached 25 centimeters, while in Central Santan, hundreds of homes across 11 neighborhood units have been submerged.
Saiful, Secretary of Central Santan Village, stated that flooding has persisted for over a week, increasing concerns among residents over crocodile sightings in residential areas.
“We have advised residents to stay indoors, especially at night, as crocodiles have been appearing in the settlements,” Saiful said.
East Kutai and parts of Kutai Kartanegara are known crocodile habitats, home to both estuarine and protected species. Some crocodiles in the region grow up to 3 meters long, and conflicts between humans and crocodiles frequently occur due to shrinking natural habitats.
During the current floods, crocodile sightings have become increasingly frequent, with several encounters going viral on social media.

Samarinda. The East Kalimantan government has turned a former mining area in the provincial capital Samarinda into agricultural land for rice cultivation. Acting Governor Akmal Malik said this initiative supports food self-sufficiency and the free nutritious meals program introduced by President Prabowo Subianto.
“Rice planting on former mining land is more productive compared to conventional paddy fields,” Akmal said on Thursday.
Akmal explained that the rice harvested on former mining land will increase the amount of paddy output. From this planting, the provincial government is optimistic that they will achieve rice harvests of up to four tons per hectare.
“The harvest from rice planting on former mining land can produce much more paddy compared to yields from typical rice fields,” he said.
Akmal further elaborated that the total area of former mining land in East Kalimantan is estimated to exceed 200,000 hectares. If half of this land is converted and cultivated for agriculture, East Kalimantan is expected to achieve food self-sufficiency by 2026.
“Imagine there are 200,000 hectares [of ex-mining lands] and if we use half of them for rice planting, we will be able to achieve self-sufficiency in food,” he said.
Samarinda. Researchers from Mulawarman University in Samarinda and the Indonesian Nature Conservation Foundation (YKAN) announced on Sunday that they have discovered a native plant with significant potential to treat cancer and diabetes.
The plant, known scientifically as Macaranga conifera and locally referred to as Sange-sange or Sepu, grows abundantly in tropical forests. In addition to its high antioxidant content, it is believed to help fight cancer cells and could potentially serve as a cure for diabetes.
Macaranga conifera is one of several plant species consumed by orangutans. The research team identified its medical potential during a broader study into the various types of plants that orangutans eat.
“We were initially interested in hundreds of orangutan food sources, looking at whether they offer extra nutrition or have medicinal value. Orangutans and humans share many similarities, so we analyzed the compounds in the plants they consume,” said Irawan Wijaya Kusuma, Dean of the Faculty of Forestry at Mulawarman University and a member of the research team.
“From the 60 plant samples, we looked for compounds resembling those found in medicines already on the market. We found that Macaranga conifera has very high antioxidant properties,” Irawan noted.
The study, conducted in partnership with a laboratory at Kyushu University in Japan, involved testing extracts of Macaranga conifera on five types of cancer cells: liver (HepG2), colon (HCT-116), neuroblastoma (SY-Sy5y), breast (MCF-7), and cervical (HeLa).
Irawan highlighted that these findings represent an exciting development in medical science, potentially paving the way for new drug discoveries. However, additional studies and regulatory oversight by the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) are required before Macaranga conifera can be developed into safe and effective medicines or herbal products.
Arif Rifki, an endangered species conservation specialist at YKAN, noted that Macaranga conifera is a pioneer plant typically found along riverbanks or in recently deforested regions.
“Because it grows in abundance, humans don’t need to compete with orangutans for Macaranga conifera,” he said. “It is produced naturally in open or stressed environments, so it’s both easy to find and does not interfere with orangutan feeding needs.”

Indonesia — Major flooding from just a few hours of heavy rain in Samarinda
has underscored the severity of the environmental degradation being carried out by the industry
both times a result of heavy rainfall washing into the Mahakam River unchecked from deforested mining concessions upstream
“The main cause of flood is coal mines,” said Muriono
an official from the disaster mitigation agency
“There are many mining pits that are left unmonitored and even abandoned
The result is the destruction of the environment because the ecology is disturbed and not rehabilitated.”
says there are more than 10 mining companies operating just upstream of Samarinda
which sits at the mouth of the Mahakam River
Their activities have turned the once forested landscape of the upstream area into a barren wasteland dotted with abandoned mining pits
and as a result the upstream area can no longer absorb large volumes of rainfall
“Samarinda is an area that receives rainwater runoff from other areas
such as Kutai Kartanegara district” further inland
said Pradarma Rupang from the East Kalimantan chapter of Jatam
“Water from both illegal and legal mining concessions around Samarinda’s borders will end up in Samarinda.”
The mining companies have been getting away with razing the forests for years because the local government turned a blind eye to their activities
“It’s an old song that keeps repeating,” he said
“Flooding is an old problem and the cause has been mentioned
but there’s no effort to improve [the situation] by the Samarinda municipal government.”
The mines have also undermined the capacity of another river in the area
Wahyu Widhi Heranata, the head of the East Kalimantan mining agency, said these companies had left behind at least four mining pits
the runoff carries mud from these sites and into the river
exacerbated by the deforestation that means there’s no vegetation to stop the topsoil from also washing away
rendering them shallower and reducing their capacity to absorb large volumes of water
The dam’s reservoir today has a capacity of just 500,000 cubic meters (132 million gallons)
or just over a third of its designed capacity of 1.4 million m3 (370 million gal.)
“Samarinda no longer has a water catchment area,” Pradarma said
“The capacity of the Benanga dam and the Karang Mumus River that’s meant to [contain runoff] doesn’t function well.”
said the problem was exacerbated by the proliferation of settlements along the banks of the Karang Mumus
as well as the indiscriminate dumping of trash into the river
Nearly 45% of the streams and other waterways passing through Samarinda have disappeared
according to the city’s public works agency
“We can see now that the Karang Mumus River has already narrowed,” Hendra said
“There’s a lot of trash and the catchment soil doesn’t function because it has turned into settlements.”
He said both the Karang Mumus River and the Benanga dam had to be dredged
to boost their capacity to collect and store runoff water
“Samarinda citizens [also] have to be aware to not throw their trash [in the river],” he said
then Samarinda will slowly be free from floods.”

Samarinda, East Kalimantan. A fire in the densely-populated Jalan Slamet Riyadi area of Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on Thursday (10/03) night has left over 2,000 residents homeless.
The fire began at 7 p.m. and quickly destroyed many of the wooden houses in the area, Samarinda Disaster Mitigation Agency official Nanang Arifin said.
Between 300 and 400 houses have been affected, with the 712 families displaced, Nanang said at the scene, as reported by local news agency Koran Kaltim. A small mosque and a local kindergarten were also destroyed, he added.
Residents have been temporarily evacuated to the nearby Darrul Nikmah mosque and Muhammadiyah 2 Junior High School, he said.
The fire was extinguished by 11:30 p.m. after 29 fire trucks attended. Exact losses remain unclear.
According to the country’s disaster management agency BNPB (Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana) flooding began around several days ago and has affected a total of 11,652 families or 35,684 people
Samarinda City is situated on the Mahakam river in the east of the island of Borneo
The river overflowed after heavy rain on 09 June
BNPB said that flood water was 1.25 metres deep in some areas
Across the Makassar Strait lies the island of Sulawesi where flooding recently affected 3 provinces

On 23 March 2016 two high school students – Noval Slamat Riyadi
aged 15 – were found drowned in an abandoned mining pit in Kutai Kartanegara
The teenagers’ deaths bring to 22 the number of children that have drowned in unused
water-filled mining holes in East Kalimantan since 2011
was found drowned in a soccer field-sized mine pit on the outskirts of Samarinda
Aprilia was reportedly playing with friends on her way home from school when she fell into the unmarked pit
One hundred-and-fifty such pits scar Samarinda’s landscape
with an estimated 500 in total across East Kalimantan
according to the regional branch of the Network for Mining Advocacy (JATAM)
JATAM recently released a confronting YouTube film with interviews of the families who have lost children to mining pits
particularly the 2009 Minerals and Coal Mining Law
gave district and municipal administrations the authority to issue mining permits
nearly 50 per cent of the province is now covered in coal mining permits
threatening agricultural land and conservation areas
New powers for allowing district governments to issue permits did not
correspond with an increase in budget or capacity for local management and monitoring of mining operations or clean-up activities
Decentralisation and the global mining boom brought chaos to the industry
In many places multiple permits have been issued for the same land area
permits have been allocated illegally in conservation and protected forests and along water catchment areas
and there has been a huge loss of state revenue – official estimates suggest that up to half of Indonesia’s mining companies pay no royalties and are not registered to pay tax
A recent investigation by Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission identified losses of almost US$1.24 billion in public revenue across Indonesia’s mining sector
Of a total of 10,827 mining permits issued across the country
4563 were found to not meet ‘clean and clear’ standards
which include having a detailed environmental impact assessment and a post-mining reclamation and rehabilitation plan. The proliferation of mining permits has had a damaging impact on people and the environment
where mining consumes 70 per cent of the municipality’s land area
Some mines are located within metres of homes and schools
While the industry brought employment and investment
it has also been the source of much angst –landslides and flooding worsened as a result of mining expansion in Samarinda according to JATAM’s research
with the World Wildlife Fund estimating the cost of the resulting damage at around $9 million
Acids and sulphates from mining have leeched into rivers
fish ponds and wet rice fields according to local farmers in and around Samarinda who have experienced dramatic reductions in yields as a result
many small and medium-sized mines have closed or remain inactive
But they continue to pose a serious threat to residents
The blue-green colour of the water-filled mine pits lures young people to them
who then misjudge the depth of the pits and the steep sides that make them difficult to escape
Greenpeace researcher Cut Hilda Meutia found that the pits contained high levels of chemicals
As the impact of ingesting or absorbing these chemicals is not immediate
Civil society organisations (CSOs) have worked hard to push local administrations to clean up abandoned sites
CSOs have advocated for improved management of mining in East Kalimantan
home to 28 per cent of Indonesia’s coal reserves
after 11 people had drowned in disused mining pits in East Kalimantan
A case was submitted to the Samarinda High Court on 25 June 2013
beginning a year-long trial known as the Gerakan Samarinda Menggugat (Samarinda Citizen Lawsuit
Nineteen plaintiffs impacted by coal mining presented at the trial
including rice farmers and fishermen who claimed that their diminishing water supplies were increasingly acidic due to dust particles released by mining operations
finding that the government had been negligent in fulfilling their obligations under the 2009 Environmental Law
‘Everyone shall be entitled to a proper and healthy environment as part of their human rights’
the local government had denied the people of Samarinda their right to enjoy a clean and safe environment
The court also ordered the government to evaluate all coal mining permits in Samarinda
monitor reclamation and other post-mining efforts
and take action to protect community farming and fishing areas from contamination by coal mining activities
and children continue to drown in exposed coal mining pits in Samarinda and in the neighbouring district of Kutai Kartenegara
NGOs believe one of the reasons for the sluggish response could be the recent reforms that have shifted authority over mining permits
23/2014) introduced in October 2014 moves authority for coal and mineral mining (as well as forestry and fisheries) from district governments to provincial governments and the central government
which should be completed by 2 October 2016
provincial governments will be responsible for issuing permits
and also for evaluating the status of problematic mining permits in their jurisdictions
Governors must report the results to the central government
which will decide whether to maintain or cancel the permits
lawyer and researcher at Samarinda-based NGO Prakarsa Borneo
explains that post-mining clean-up and pit closure is the responsibility of companies
District governments – until the introduction of the new law – were tasked with enforcing and overseeing this process
Yet despite the real dangers of leaving mine sites exposed
companies often evade their reclamation responsibilities
Laws require that companies set aside funds for reclamation activities before conducting extraction work
but in practice these obligations are often not met
‘There are many companies that do not put aside reclamation funds
so the government doesn’t have the resources it needs to close mine sites,’ says Muhdar
Frustrated with government inaction and excuses
CSOs have tried to find creative responses to the problem
‘The government always gives the excuse that there is not enough funding for closing mines’
says Merah Johansyah of East Kalimantan JATAM
NGO activists have held actions following children’s deaths in local mining pits
asking fellow Indonesians to donate Rp.1000 to crowd-fund mine closures
So they won’t have any further excuses for inaction.’
East Kalimantan governor Awang Faroek Ishak has indicated his willingness to reform mining governance
Awang has a chequered past when it comes to the mining industry
During his time as district head of East Kutai
Awang was named by the Attorney General’s Office for embezzling state funds resulting from the sale of a portion of coal company PT Kaltim Prima Coal
But his recent attention to the industry’s problems is welcome
In 2013 Awang issued a provincial moratorium on new concessions for mining
Awang has issued a statement saying that those companies on whose concessions mining-pit deaths have occurred must submit a mine closure plan and report on reparations paid to victims
Perhaps the most important reform has been the passing of a provincial regulation in 2015 enacting a supervisory commission
The commission will consist of government and civil society representatives tasked with overseeing mining reclamation and clean-up efforts
an important development that will introduce transparency and participation in the mining clean-up process
ensuring that pits are closed safely and in accordance with environmental standards
An important step for improving mining governance in Indonesia will be ensuring that the shift in authority for mining permits from district to provincial governments does not slow down reforms
In the end it is the central government that should ensure there is no confusion over the division of responsibilities between the districts and the provinces
when the bodies of teenagers Noval and Diki were found in mining pits
In response Jokowi has issued an audit of all mining permits issued in East Kalimantan
‘I order the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to control and check mining [operations]
especially small mining sites that don’t prioritise work safety,’ Jokowi told media in Balikpapan
and there is now an opportunity to tighten controls and mitigate further losses to human life
and to the ecosystems on which life is sustained
Jokowi needs to ensure that his demand for an audit of the mining sector results in real improvements in mining governance in East Kalimantan

Jakarta. Four people were injured when a Molotov cocktail exploded in front of a church in Samarinda district, East Kalimantan, on Sunday morning (13/11).
"It is true. Four people were injured, including a toddler," East Kalimantan Police chief Insp. Gen. Safaruddin told news portal Detik.com.
The incident occurred at around 10.30 a.m. local time during Sunday Mass at the Ecumenical Christian Church located in Jalan Cipto Mangunkkusumo in Loa Janan Ilir village, Samarinda Seberang subdistrict.
Four motorcycles were also damaged in the attack.
The four victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
"The alleged suspect has been arrested," Safaruddin said.
The alleged attacker, who was only identified by the initial J., is a 33-year-old resident of Bogor, West Java. He reportedly wore a black shirt featuring the word "Jihad" when police arrested him.
Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo gave his permission to continue the Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road project to Bontang, another city in East Kalimantan, as part of the efforts to improve connectivity in the country which in turn will reduce logistics costs and food prices.
"I've talked about this matter with the Public Works and Housing Minister last night," the president said in Balikpapan on Monday (05/12). "That's not a problem. So, Balikpapan to Bontang it is."
The president's permission came after East Kalimantan Governor Awang Farouk asked to extend the project to Bontang, about 116 kilometers northeast from Samarinda.
The toll road connecting Balikpapan and Samarinda, the capital city of East Kalimantan province, is initially designed to span across 99-kilometer near the coastal line of Kalimantan island, cutting travel time to an hour from up to three hours previously.
The project, which begun in 2010 but was postponed until 2015 due to land acquisition issues, has five parts; one will be fully funded by the state and district coffers, another will be funded through a loan program from China and three other parts are tendered to the private sector.
Jokowi still expects the Balikpapan-Samarinda original project to be completed at the end of 2018, ahead of the initial target of May 2019.
The president has allowed three existing consortium — which includes the consortium of state-control toll road operator Jasa Marga, state construction Wijaya Karya, Pembangunan Perumahan and Bangun Tjipta Sarana; consortium Citra Marga Nusaphala Persada, Kaltim Bina Sarana Konstruksi, Brantas Abipraya, Istaka Karya; and consortium Naza Engineering & Construction, Daya Mulia Turangga — to chip into the extension project.

Samarinda. Police have designated the owner of a pet tiger as a suspect after the carnivore fatally attacked his assistant in the East Kalimantan capital, Samarinda.
The suspect faces charges of illegal possession of an endangered animal and negligence that resulted in the death of his domestic assistant, said Comr. Rengga Puspo Saputro, head of the Samarinda Metropolitan Police's criminal investigation unit.
"The legal proceedings are underway and the tiger owner has been named a suspect in the investigation," Rengga told reporters in Samarinda on Sunday.
The decision to pursue a criminal investigation emerged after police questioned five witnesses at the scene located on Jalan Wahid Hasyim 2, North Samarinda District, he said.
Allegedly caring for the tiger since its cub days approximately three years ago, the suspect reportedly lacked the necessary permit for owning the animal, the officer added.
The offense carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison.
Suprianda, 27, the domestic worker, suffered fatal injuries from the tiger attack on Saturday, although the exact sequence of events remains unclear.
The worker was found deceased with severe injuries near the tiger's enclosure.
Promptly responding to the scene, the police initiated an investigation and arrested the employer.
Hanifah, a relative of the deceased, revealed that Suprianda had previously expressed dissatisfaction with his work conditions. Suprianda had informed family members of his intention to resign, especially after being tasked with the responsibility of feeding the tiger.
"Suprianda had mentioned the tiger's aggressive behavior and disclosed injuries from scratches and bites," Hanifah said.

SAMARINDA (9 February 2024) – Borneo FC Samarinda have extended the contract of current head coach Pieter Huistra until 2025
This follows the inspiring performance of the team under his charge where the team has won 16 matches
drawn six times and lost only twice in 24 matches played
Borneo FC are currently at the top of the 2023/24 BRI Liga 1 standings with 54 points – 12 points ahead of second-placed PSIS Semarang and 13 points from third-placed Persib Bandung
“Pieter will still be with us until 2025
this extension will make Pieter even more motivated to bring a championship title to Samarinda City,” said Borneo FC President Nabil Husien Said Amin
Sailing upstream from the provincial capital of Samarinda to Kutai Kartanegara
rivers are just like busy highways in the more developed Java
staggering coal-laden bulk carriers looked like clusters of floating hills from afar
vessels carrying mostly timber are headed for sawmills dotting the 980-km long river
Locals and researchers fondly remember sighting groups of dolphins along the Mahakam River from the upstream Kutai region down to the estuary in Samarinda
it is teeming with vessels of all sizes that environmentalists partly blame for the dwindling population of the treasured river dolphins
a senior researcher and scientific advisor with RASI
said the heavy presence of vessels and the noise they make has greatly contributed to the endangerment of the rare species
“They don’t rise up as often as they used to; they have experienced a change in diving pattern.”
Research shows that the animals have gone through behavioral changes because of the noise pollution and deteriorating water quality due to the dust and debris from the passing vessels
Untreated waste from industrial activities along the Mahakam and its numerous water sources has exacerbated the predicament
The busy traffic not only causes stress to aquatic life but also damages the river’s ecosystem
especially in narrow creeks where fish spawn
The prolonged stress reduces the animals’ immunity and contributes to ailments and premature deliveries
changes in migration patterns and avoidance of excessively busy spots like tributaries
The latter results in fiercer competition for space and food
the dolphins are at risk of being struck by speedboats
as excessive noise confuses their sonar system
The underwater noise pollution from the busy river traffic is worst at confluences
One of the most affected is the Kedang Kepala tributary in Kutai Kartanegara
which is known as one of the few remaining Mahakam dolphin habitats
the researchers focused on several important spots
dolphins were sighted in various spots along the way
Kreb noted that the number of Mahakam dolphins in the Kedang Kepala River had dropped by 50 percent since pontoons began “invading” the area two years ago
The river has sustained damage to its banks
because it is too narrow for large vessels to make L- or U-turns
She expressed her wish that vessels be banned in the area
because it has been earmarked as a priority conservation area for not only water but also wasteland ecosystems
“Residents have told me that the Mahakam’s current used to be stronger
This means the water quality has deteriorated
The loss of vegetation at the riverside has deprived small fish of spawning grounds
All this has happened over the past two years
since the strong presence of vessels began in the area,” Kreb said
A study the RASI conducted at the Siran estuary and Kedang Kepala River from November 2015 to December 2017 shows that the level of underwater noise from passing vessels ranges from 87 to 93 decibels
any underwater noise above 80 decibels can disable dolphins’ sonar system
such that the mammals will lose their sense of orientation
They may lose the ability to measure their distance from objects like passing vessels
Various studies show that water traffic greatly interferes with dolphins’ daily activity
and with their ability to depend on an eco-location signal to determine the bearing and location of other group members
Sustained excessive noise pollution is also bad for the mammals’ digestive and reproductive systems
The Mahakam dolphin is widely thought to be of the same species as the Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) found in coastal areas in South and Southeast Asia
and in three rivers: the Ayeyarwady in Myanmar
Kreb — who has researched the Kalimantan dolphins locally known as pesut Mahakam for about 20 years — begs to differ
DNA analysis showed that the pesut was a totally different species
proposing that it be scientifically identified as Orcaella mahakamensis instead
the pesut DNA is currently being analysed in collaboration with the International Biodiversity Research Center in Bali and the University of Atmajaya in Yogyakarta
It lives in freshwater and has completely adapted to and evolved in freshwater
bone structure and DNA […] all of which make the Mahakam dolphin more valuable [than the Irrawaddy]; and it really is on the brink of extinction,” said Kreb
East Kalimantan is an industrial and resource-rich region
where 147 major companies operate mostly in the Kutai Kartanegara regency that accounts for much of the Mahakam dolphin territory
PT Bara Tambang and Fajar Sakti Prima of the Bayan Group
operate vessels on the Kedang Kepala River since 2015
which also runs a jetty in the Belayan River
It looks as though the disruption will only worsen
a senior official with the East Kalimantan Energy and Mineral Resources Agency
told The Jakarta Post that Fajar Sakti Prima
is presently building a 90-km coal-hauling path traversing the regencies of Kutai Kartanegara and West Kutai
Fajar Sakti Prima had its license revoked for flouting environmental laws in 2015
but it has been reinstated by the provincial administration
That was after the company had convinced the local government it would comply with regulations and help protect the Kedang Kepala River
The minimum interval between coal pontoons traveling on the river is set at 30 minutes and a maximum speed of 8 knots
there is no guarantee they are enforceable
the local administration is short of funding and human resources to oversee 10 townships and regencies
Locals say the sighting of pesut near residential areas anywhere along the Mahakam is increasingly rare in recent years
oil palm plantations and logging are blamed for the environmental degradation in general and the disappearance of the dolphins in particular
the Mahakam has been used for years to store logs before they are transported to saw mills
the RASI has recorded 32 dolphin deaths; three of those happened last year
The most common causes of death are unintended entrapment in gill nets and poisoning
knowing the animals are rare and legally protected
Besides health problems presumably caused by excessive noise pollution
other major causes of Mahakam dolphin fatalities that researchers have identified include gill nets
poisoning from domestic waste and coal mining
The Mahakam dolphin’s lifespan is estimated at 30 to 40 years
The age of sexual maturity varies depending on gender
Males become sexually mature at 10-15 years of age and females at 5-13 years
a female dolphin can give birth approximately 10 times
It will take a concerted effort between the government
businesses and local residents to save the Mahakam dolphin

Peristiwa haru meninggalnya Ibu Padmi, pejuang Kendeng asal Pati, Jawa Tengah Tengah

The Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road on the eastern coast line on the island of Kalimantan (in the province of East Kalimantan) will be extended to include the city of Bontang
During a visit to Balikpapan at the start of the week
Indonesian President Joko Widodo confirmed the extension plan
It implies that the project will more than double in length
The distance between Balikpapan and Samarinda is around 99 kilometers
from Samarinda further northeastwards to Bontang stretches across 116 kilometers
The Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road is one of Indonesia's toll road projects
designed to boost intra-island connectivity
hence curtailing the country's high logistics costs
improve the competitiveness of domestic businesses
and make the investment climate more attractive
In the period 2015-2019 the Indonesian government targets to build 1,000 kilometers of road
approximately doubling the length of the nation's existing toll roads
This is a very ambitious target that may not be achieved due to Indonesia's notorious land acquisition problems
The Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road is one of the many infrastructure projects in Indonesia that had to be delayed due to these land acquisition problems
construction of this toll road commenced in 2010
construction was halted for a period of five years as developers failed to purchase all required land
After being inaugurated as Indonesia's seventh president in 2014
Widodo's push for infrastructure development is what gave new life to this project in 2015 although not all required land has been acquired yet
the government is optimistic that the nearly USD $1 billion project (the route Balikpapan-Samarinda) can be completed by 2018 and will cut travel time between both cities to about one hour (from nearly three hours currently)
The request to add Bontang to the Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road stemmed from East Kalimantan Governor Awang Farouk
Although we did not obtain information about the amount of additional costs that are required to establish the Samarinda-Bontang road
the whole project is estimated to cost USD $2 billion considering the length of the toll road will more than double compared to the initial plan
The Balikpapan-Samarinda part is divided in five sections
Construction of one of these sections will be fully funded by the central government's state budget (APBN) and the regional state budget (APBN-D)
Another section will be financed through a loan from China
The remaining three sections are tendered to the private sector
and (3) the consortium of Naza Engineering & Construction

The perpetrators armed with knives were believed to climb on board the ship via the anchor chain and stole the ropes by lowering to a small boat from the forward store door at the forecastle deck
ReCAAP ISC earlier noted another similar incident against the Cyprus-flagged bulk carrier ‘Katerina’
approximately 4.7 nm northeast of Nongsa Point
the duty officer sighted four perpetrators in the engine room
The master raised the alarm and mustered the crew
A search was conducted and there was no further sighting of the perpetrators and no item was reported lost
The crew was not injured and no item was stolen
In its piracy report for the first quarter of 2018, IMB highlighted that Indonesia recorded nine low level attacks against anchored vessels. Despite this, in its recent quarterly report
ReCAAP ISC noted a significant drop in piracy and armed robbery incidents against ships in Asia
with a total 14 incidents in January-March period
compared to 27 incidents that were reported during the same period in 2017
