Covering approximately 15 hectares, the resort is situated in an area of historical significance dating back to the 1960s, marking the beginning of Bali’s tourism development. The walls are clad in rough-surfaced marble
whilst the glossy marble floors in dark tones complement the design
The ceiling boasts a long skylight with a water feature and a reflecting mirror thus
The water serves as both an aesthetic feature and a cooling element
reducing the indoor temperature by 1-2.5 degrees Celsius

this all will make you feel warmly welcomed by the friendly Balinese staff

The guest room buildings feature three levels with limasan-style roofs

In addition to being contextually appropriate for the tropical environment
the wood enhances the warmth and homey feel of the resort
The suites are intentionally spacious, ranging from 83 to 209 square metres. As General Manager Ed Brea explains
“Meru is part of the medical and wellness tourism sector
where guests undergoing treatment at the hospital can recover
It will be ideal as we will have a direct connection to the hospital and will even provide transportation back and forth.”
Each suite features a terrace or balcony that connects guests to the exterior

Commissioned by Indonesia’s founding president

“[Local people] tell a story of how he used to come here

Following a three-year restoration that cost 1 trillion Indonesian rupees (US$61 million)
the property now features an entrance worthy of an Ancient Greek or Roman edifice
a long marble tunnel with a dark mirrored ceiling leads to a grand concrete lobby inlaid with wooden structures
including a 30-metre-long bass relief of Sukarno surrounded the people of Indonesia
“The architect’s brief was to bring back the original grandeur and compliment the original design by folding new structures into existing ones,” Brea says
“We’ve had some guests who came here with their parents when they were kids; they remember playing in the pool
They say the hotel still has the same feeling as it did back then.”

by Indonesia Natour (InJourney Hospitality)
Gregorius Supie Yolodi and Maria Rosantina
were also appointed as design coordinators
managing the engineering and design teams for the project
Below is an excerpt from Indonesia Design’s chat with them about The Meru Sanur
What was the brief from InJourney Hospitality for this project
The grand vision for the project came from the former President Joko Widodo through the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir
Under the supervision and coordination of Minister Eric Thohir
led by the Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Kartika Wirjoatmodjo
Director of InJourney Dony Oskaria and Director of Hospitality of Indonesia Network (HIN)/InJourney Hospitality Christine Hutabarat
the project aimed to transform Sanur into a premier health and wellness tourism destination
The Sanur SEZ covers 41.26 hectares and includes facilities such as five-star hotels
an International Convention Centre with a capacity of 5,000 people
and other amenities supported by cutting-edge technology
A key aspect of the project was to celebrate the historical significance of the Bali Beach Hotel
which was initiated by Indonesia’s first president
in 1963 and renamed Grand Inna Bali Beach Hotel in 1986
We translated this vision into a modern realisation
preserving and restoring the signature elements of the original design while ensuring the new structures harmonise with its architectural heritage
The space between the porte-cochère and the lobby forms an impressive tunnel
Our goal was to create a welcoming area and lobby that reflect the elegance of a five-star hotel
We wanted to provide guests with a spatial experience that evokes emotion and sets the tone for their stay
You used rough-surface marble for the walls and glossy marble slabs for the floor of the tunnel
Could you explain the reasoning behind this choice
The materials for the new structures primarily consist of wood and stone
we used dark stone with a rough texture to enhance its character and create visual depth
we applied marble with a textured finish to the walls and a dark stainless mirror to the ceiling for its reflective quality
which complements the walls and adds a sense of continuity and sophistication
The wooden roof construction detail is striking
To distinguish The Meru from the white heritage tower of the Bali Beach Hotel
we chose wood and stone as the primary materials
Local woods such as ironwood and merbau were used for the exterior
with additional local wood varieties for the interiors
We emphasised the natural beauty of the wood by incorporating detailed joint work
so as to enrich its character and adding an artisanal touch to the overall design
The coastal town of Sanur is home to the tallest building on the island, the iconic Bali Beach Hotel, The Heritage Collection. Commissioned by Indonesia’s first president
it opened in 1966 to put Bali on the world’s tourism map and became the island’s first five-star hotel
The ten-storey property underwent many name changes over the decades
an integrated destination for holistic health in a special economic zone
It also shares an entrance with its brand new sister property
the 273 ocean-facing rooms and suites have been given a new look
There are eight distinct categories of plush accommodation to suit different needs
The 81-square-metre Deluxe Suite features a private balcony and a working space
Aside from its expansive separate living and bedroom areas
the suite’s balcony offers indomitable panoramic views of Sanur and beyond

this historic property offers guests the luxury of space
Families with young children will enjoy its large beach area
A state-of-the-art fitness centre and daily complimentary exercises are available for guests
The hotel is also equipped with the Bali Beach Convention which can accommodate up to 4,000 guests
The laid-back village of Sanur is renowned for its six-kilometre-long beachfront path
it is the perfect spot for an early morning jog while watching the sun slowly rise and Mount Agung on the horizon
Guests can rent a bicycle and explore the neighbourhood’s vibrant dining spots and cultural attractions such as Museum Le Mayeur and the ancient Blanjong stone pillar
With its batik and calming indigo-blue accents
the restaurant is making a name for its take on modern Indonesian cuisine
A lunch at Roso involves a platter of sambals with crispy crackers
and many other delicious regional delights
the open-air restaurant is strong on Asian
guests will find a meal to satisfy their cravings

Ed assumed the position of General Manager for The Meru Sanur and the Bali Beach Hotel & Convention Centre
he kindly took an hour to speak with Indonesia Design about the newly opened resort
What were InJourney’s expectations when they appointed you to lead the resort
As The Meru is essentially the flagship for things to come
it was imperative that the project adhered to its designed specifications
Coordination with all stakeholders was critical
You joined as the general manager of The Meru Sanur after the resort had already begun operations
Did you revise or add to its vision and mission
The mission was clear from day one: integrating international standards into the service culture whilst ensuring we remain distinctly Balinese in essence
This speaks to an international audience yet acting truly Indonesian
Could you share with us your strategy for promoting the resort
We are integrated into the Sanur Health Special Economic Zone (Sanur SEZ)
Promoting medical tourism and wellness is the foundation of our strategy
complemented by The Meru as our luxury wellness offering
we have distinct positioning for the Bali Beach Hotel as part of our heritage collection
which has hosted both domestic and international medical conventions
What are the advantages and challenges of managing the resort so far
The initial challenges involved operating during a phased refurbishment of the Bali Beach Hotel and the final fitting out of The Meru resort
Through careful planning with all stakeholders
the project team and contractors managed to mitigate most disruptions for guests
How has the resort’s architecture and design affected guest enthusiasm
The minute guests arrive and walk down the arrival corridor
It’s a completely unexpected experience that sets the tone as they enter the lobby
complemented by a warm and timeless design
It’s tropical luxury in a haven of tranquillity
How do you incorporate Balinese philosophy into the resort’s programmes
The Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana is our guiding principle
emphasising harmony and balance in life through three interconnected elements
thus fostering devotion and a connection to the divine
encouraging positive interactions and relationships amongst individuals
which highlights environmental sustainability that promotes a respectful and balanced relationship with nature
this philosophy translates into embracing the spirit and uniqueness of Balinese cultural attributes
Our associates are encouraged to show their natural warmth and engaging nature
We teach them the finer points of luxury service and standards
ensuring that everything else is guided gently and consistently
Our associates are incredible and truly inspiring

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno targeted health tourism in the Bali-based Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to start operating in 2025.
Sandiaga already met with 25 potential investors in Bali on Wednesday
and confirmed that the government will open an aesthetic clinic and a large hospital in Sanur next March
"Today (Wednesday) we met with 25 significant investors to follow up on the Sanur SEZ health tourism
and they are very interested in investing here
We are targeting to start operating several clinics and hospitals focusing on health tourism next year,” said Sandiaga
as quoted in a ministry official statement on Thursday
Sandiaga explained that the Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) brought several investors to inspect the health-based tourism in the Bali-based SEZ
He claimed that investors from Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, and Japan expressed interest in developing several plots in Sanur SEZ
"We’re hoping they’ll come here
not only to inspect the 44 hectares stretch of SEZ but also to explore the potential of the ecosystem outside of Sanur in supporting health tourism in Bali," he said
Bali’s championed health services include aesthetic clinics
the target market for health tourism in Bali ranges from Indonesians who often spend tons of money on overseas health services to foreigners from Australia
"Hopefully the Rp161 trillion spent by over 2 million Indonesians to get treatment abroad could be redirected for the health tourism in Bali,” he said.

Arkadiko Bridge, One of World's Oldest Bridges Found in Greece
she has led a diverse portfolio of high-end
ranging from residential spaces to offices
One of her standout projects is The Meru Sanur
where she is the visionary behind the serene and cosy design of the suites
Below is an excerpt from our conversation with her about the project
What was the brief from the client (InJourney)
The brief was to create a new benchmark for Indonesian luxury hospitality design
setting a standard for excellence in both aesthetics and function
especially considering it is targeted towards visitors seeking healing
How did you translate this vision into your design
Healing architecture is about creating spaces that nurture physical
minimising visual clutter and material excess to cultivate a calming environment
It’s essential to differentiate between minimalism and reductionism
Whilst minimalism emphasises elegance through restraint
reductionism is about the careful selection of elements that maintain both function and inspiration
we don’t merely replicate tradition but rather distil its essence
creating a harmonious blend of the past and the future
This process ensures that the design is both timeless and contemporary
and how did you incorporate Balinese traditions into your work
Our mission is to craft the design that serve as a bridge between cultural heritage and contemporary living
so as to harmoniously integrate tradition into everyday routine
We believe that to honour Indonesian heritage in contemporary design is not to merely mimic the past
By exploring the core values of our culture
we can infuse spaces with a subtle elegance that transcends time
This demonstrates the power of conceptual design to elevate the ordinary
thus creating environments that are both aesthetically pleasing and culturally significant
The suite’s design incorporates numerous cultural references
such as the custom minibar cabinet handle inspired by the graceful curve of a pendetdancer
We drew inspiration from Sanur’s rich heritage as a former fisherman’s village
“The Morning of the World.” Elements of this history are subtly incorporated into the design
such as the rattan weaving used for wall treatments and dividers
which evoke the imagery of a fisherman’s net
is reflected in the design of the corridor and vanity wall lamps
The bedside lamps are inspired by the traditional multileveled umbrella
a symbol often used in Balinese ceremonies and as decoration in local neighbourhoods
which lends a more modern touch while maintaining the ornament’s philosophical significance
Can you tell us about the use of local symbols and colours in the design
and how they contribute to the overall atmosphere of the suites
The design of the outdoor armchairs subtly incorporates the iconic lines of perahu bercadik
a defining symbol of Bali’s maritime heritage
The colour palette draws from the spectacular Sanur sunrise
incorporating shades that transition from the calm blue of twilight to the vibrant orange of dawn
These colours are carefully chosen to complement the neutral tones of the suite
A custom-printed painting behind the bed adds a unique modern touch to the design
Featuring depictions of the Bali Starling (Jalak Bali)
the artwork connects the space to the island’s natural beauty and cultural identity.
