State-owned construction firm PTPP said Monday that its Serang drainage basin project in Yogyakarta's Kulon Progo did not only protect local area from flood
but could also boost agricultural productivity
the drainage basin protects key areas spanning 1,428 hectares from flood
The covered areas include Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA)
The project took up an investment worth Rp 295 billion -- all coming from the 2020-2023 state budget
PTPP reported that it took about 1,202 days (September 16
flood had disrupted locals from carrying out their daily activities and going to the YIA airport
Thanks to the basin's effective control system
thus improving the area's connectivity
The basin is also a boon to local agricultural productivity
Farmers used to only be able to harvest 1-2 times a year due to the flood
The improved irrigation system has enabled farmers to harvest up to three times each year
this basin project aligns with PTPP's efforts in helping Indonesia become self-sufficient in food
The basin also unlocks water tourism potential -- another key driver to local economic growth. The retention ponds that were built not only function as water reservoirs but are also projected to become a new tourist destination.
"This flood control infrastructure has been helpful
particularly the people living the YIA Airport who always struggle with flood every rainy season
we can take advantage of the water flow to irrigate the rice fields," a local resident said
Hal tersebut dikatakan juru bicara TPNPB-OPM
manajemen markas pusat Komnas TPNPB telah menerima laporan resmi dari panglima TPNPB Kodap VIII Intan Jaya

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Environment has found 26 companies suspected of polluting the Ciujung River in Serang Regency, Banten. The pollution of the 142-kilometer-long Ciujung River has affected hundreds of thousands of residents in four areas
"At least this initial data reveals 26 companies that we suspect are contributing to the quality of the Ciujung River," said Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq during his visit to Serang Regency on Friday
He explained that the data on companies suspected of polluting the Ciujung River was obtained through drone mapping and satellite imagery
Hanif and the Ministry of Villages and Disadvantaged Regions conducted an impromptu inspection of two of the 26 companies
Both companies are located in the Kragilan area and are pulp and paper factories
The Ministry of Environment has also sealed the illegal waste disposal sites of both industries
One of the company's waste disposal sites covers an area of 42 hectares
The waste projections at the site reach two million tons per year
Another company's waste processing site covers half a hectare and is located near the Ciujung River
Hanif has also ordered his subordinates to conduct environmental audits of both companies
The Ministry of Environment has sealed off unauthorized landfills near the factories as a law enforcement measure
He mentioned that these companies could be prosecuted under Articles 98 and 103 of the Environmental Protection and Management Law
"I believe that corrective measures must be taken together to ensure the safety of the environment for all people in Indonesia," Hanif said
The Ciujung River stretches from Lebak Regency
Thousands of residents in the three regencies depend on the river for their livelihoods
Pollution of the Ciujung River has been a recurring problem since 2017
Hanif urged the provincial and regency governments to take decisive action against the pollution
"Our presence on the ground will raise awareness that the government is really committed to direct observation on the ground
the minister and I must personally map the sites," he said
He explained the implementation of policies enacted in the environmental sector
"So that when we make policies at a higher level
we can understand whether these policies can be implemented and what the risks are

Ketan bintul is a typical Bantenese food that is only available during the month of Ramadan
There is something the residents of Serang, Banten, are looking forward to during Ramadan. Bintul sticky rice
This typical Serang culinary specialty only "appears" when the fasting month arrives
The longing of Serang residents to savor glutinous bintul rice is evident from the long queue of buyers at the bintul rice seller's stall in Pasar Lama
its unique taste is also the reason why residents love it
Sticky rice cake made from cooked and finely pounded glutinous rice
the rice cake is served with a sprinkling of coconut floss on top
A spoonful of rice cake must be enjoyed with a serving of slightly spicy and savory braised beef
The combination indulges the taste buds and satisfies hunger after a long day
Ketan traders in Bintul are currently serving customers at Pasar Lama
Ketan bintul (a glutinous rice dish) has become a sought-after menu item for breaking the fast among the citizens of Serang
It's not complete without it," says Dadang on Tuesday (12/3/2024)
while waiting in line to get a portion of ketan bintul
Traders at Pasar Lama Serang are selling one portion of Ketan Bintul for IDR 18,000 to IDR 20,000
while beef empal is sold separately for IDR 20,000 to IDR 25,000
there are currently only a few Ketan Bintul makers left in the Serang region

One of the individuals who still regularly produces ketan bintul is Mamad Suryadi (75)
has been making ketan bintul since the 1960s
just like my in-law's before," said Mamad when met at his home
which is also used as a kitchen for making ketan bintul
Mamad Suryadi (75) showcased his glutinous rice cake produced in his kitchen in Kampung Baru
5 out of 11 of Mamad's children also help in making and selling ketan bintul every Ramadan month
The family processes around 150 kilograms of glutinous rice and 50 kilograms of beef into ketan bintul and beef empal every day
The production process starts early in the morning until 11 AM
the goods are ready to be sold at Pasar Lama market
Although the production and sales processes have been assisted by his children
especially for purchasing raw materials such as glutinous rice

As for beef empal, it uses a combination of beef and cow muscle that is boiled with coconut milk, red chili, green chili, galangal, ginger, bay leaves, and other seasonings. The long boiling time makes the meat tender and the seasonings tasty.
A worker is cooking beef empal, which is a companion food for ketan bintul, a typical menu for the month of Ramadan in Serang city, Banten, Wednesday (13/3/2024).
Although producing in large quantities, Mamad's merchandise sold out around 3pm. The high demand for consuming Ketan Bintul sparked Haji Mamad's family's desire to sell this delicacy outside of Ramadan. This was revealed by Muhammad Denni, the fifth child of Mamad and Sopianah.
"I said, 'Mum, try making this for customers on weekdays.' Yes, make it. But, only one nyiru (tray) is still left. I asked the customer, does it taste good or not? They said not enough. I asked why, because the ingredients are the same, the ingredients are the same. They said it wasn't good, there was something missing, the atmosphere was different.”
Since then, the Mamad family has stopped producing glutinous rice cakes, known as ketan bintul, outside of the month of Ramadan.
Ketan Bintul is believed to have been around since the reign of the Banten Sultanate, which included Serang in the 16th century. Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin, while leading the Banten Sultanate, was drawn to the pleasure of Ketan Bintul that he enjoyed during Ramadan. Since then, Ketan Bintul has never been absent as a dish for breaking the fast.
Sticky rice cakes are often served to welcome the Sultan's guests. The Sultan also often brings sticky rice cakes as a snack for his travels. One time during a journey, the Sultan gave the sticky rice cakes to soldiers and locals he met for breaking their fast. This made his followers amazed by the Sultan's humility. As a sign of respect for the Sultan, the people of Banten made sticky rice cakes as a menu for breaking the fast.
NHI Bandung Tourism Polytechnic Lecturer, Riadi Darwis.
Gastronomy expert and lecturer at the NHI Bandung Tourism Polytechnic, Riadi Darwis, stated that the origin of ketan bintul in Banten started from the Cirebon Sultanate. "The difference is that in Banten, the ketan is white, while in Cirebon, the ketan is slightly yellow. In the Cirebon Palace, ketan only appears during events, especially when a woman reaches adulthood. The ketan is round in shape and topped with serundeng," explained Darwis in Bandung, West Java, on Friday (15/3/2024).
For centuries, ketan bintul has remained present among the community in Serang, while also enriching the culinary heritage of Ramadan in Indonesia.
Serang, Banten. Controversial actress Nikita Mirzani praised judges at the Serang District Court as “honest” after she was acquitted of defamation during a hearing in the Banten capital on Thursday.
The panel of judges refused to proceed with the trial and ordered prosecutors to drop all charges after the plaintiff, businessman Dito Mahendra, was again a no-show in the hearing.
Dito reported Nikita to police in May for defamation after she called him a “fraudster” following lengthy personal feuds which became a social media sensation.
The panel presided over by Judge Dedy Adi Saputra has summoned him four times to testify in the hearing since the trial began but Dito failed to honor any of them. Media reports said he was being treated at a hospital in Johor, Malaysia.
“We consider that the case put forward by prosecutors cannot be accepted and accordingly we decide to acquit the defendant, Nikita Mirzani, of all charges," the judge said after Dito failed to show up for the fourth time.
Nikita rejoiced the court decision with great joy after spending two months in prosecutors’ detention during the trial.
“I was locked up at the detention facility not knowing the crime I have committed. It’s so confusing so I just followed the proceedings and today I‘m allowed to go home,” she told reporters.
“I really thank the judges, it turns out we still have honest judges here.”
It emerged during her trial that Dito also ignored a summons from the Corruption Eradication Commission to testify in the ongoing investigation into alleged corruption at the Supreme Court.
Nikita, 36, made sure that her trial didn’t go quietly with her post-hearing remarks critical of prosecutors. During a hearing ten days ago, she dropped the microphone and threw documents after prosecutors rejected her plea for release on medical reasons.
The actress, who has featured in several comedy movies, has gained national media attention more because of her marital problems and physical altercations at bars which landed her prison terms of a few months.
She is also known as a strong critic of firebrand cleric Rizieq Shihab, the leader of the now-defunct Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) which had thousands of followers.
In various social media posts, Nikita called Rizieq a charlatan and challenged him to take a DNA test to prove the claim that he is a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad.
Angry FPI supporters threatened to attack her if she didn’t make a public apology in November 2020, prompting police to deploy personnel to secure her house.

Jakarta. Listed state-controlled constructor Wijaya Karya, known as Wika, has established a joint venture that will develop and operate a $385 million worth of toll road section connecting Serang to Panimbang in Banten, the company said in a filing to the Indonesia Stock Exchange on Wednesday (22/02).
Wika Serang-Panimbang joint venture, owned by Wika, state builder PP, and a subsidiary of listed industrial estate developer Jababeka, Jababeka Infrastruktur, has secured the necessary concessions to develop and operate the Serang-Panimbang Toll Road.
Wika has 80 percent stake in the venture, while PP holds 15 percent and Jababeka Infrastruktur the rest. Wika Serang-Panimbang is armed with Rp 1.21 trillion ($90.6 million) in paid-up capital, or the total amount of capital put up by its shareholders.
The joint venture won a tender for the toll road in January.
The 83.6-kilometer section, which will connect 14 districts and 48 subdistricts of Banten, is to be completed by 2018 and will also connect travelers to Ujung Kulon National Park, a tourism destination at the westernmost end of Java.
In the first nine months of 2016, Wika's net income was Rp 401.51 billion, up 2.8 percent from the same period a year earlier.

The mathematics department grew exponentially this semester
bringing on two new professors: Assistant Professor of Mathematics Daniel Slonim ’16 and Assistant Professor of Computer Science Oliver Serang
“I’m excited about the opportunity to not just be part of the department
but of the college and the Hillsdale life,” said Slonim
who studied probability at Purdue University and went on to do a postdoctoral research program at the University of Virginia
Slonim graduated from Hillsdale with a double major in mathematics and philosophy
although he said mathematics was not initially part of his career path
“I actually wanted to go into filmmaking and was thinking about screenwriting,” Slonim said
Slonim said he initially didn’t realize the extent to which math could go
“I was aware that it was possible to major in math
I also had the feeling that once you hit calculus 1
it’s about over and there’s no more math after that,” he said
“Little did I know that there’s still an overwhelming amount of math that nobody knows
and people are still trying to figure it out all the time.”
Slonim wrote for The Collegian and took several journalism classes
“Daniel was a delight to have in class and as a Collegian writer,” Assistant Director of the Dow Journalism Program Maria Servold said
This shows that journalism students can do anything — even become math professors.”
Slonim is teaching Calculus 1 and Multivariable Calculus this semester
and although he taught several courses during his time at the University of Virginia
he said his classes at Hillsdale offer him a newfound flexibility
“I’ve never really had a chance to be totally in charge of my own Calculus 1 course
Assistant Professor of Computer Science Oliver Serang is the second faculty member to join the computer science department — a department that is growing quickly after it began three years ago
according to Chairman and Professor of Mathematics Thomas Treloar
“Some of those computer science classes were getting up to 20 to 25 students regularly,” Treloar said
“It starts getting difficult to teach that large of a class.”
Serang will not only help decrease class sizes
but he will bring new classes to Hillsdale
potentially including a cybersecurity course in the spring semester
Serang graduated from North Carolina State University in 2006 with a degree in computer engineering and studied genetics at the University of Washington in his doctorate program
“I got a grant from Howard Hughes Institution,” he said
including Universität Bremen and Freie Universität Berlin in Germany
he worked as a software engineer in Chicago
but he’d had his eye on teaching at Hillsdale for the last five years
It’s like seeing the aurora borealis,” Serang said
“I thought it just seemed like a really nice place with good values
And I thought I would like to work there before I get older.”
Serang is teaching Algorithms and Introduction to Computer Science
and he said he is most excited to work with Hillsdale students because of the energy they bring to the classroom
He compared teaching Hillsdale students to explaining a magic trick to a rapt audience
“It’s like hanging out with curious kids,” he said
“I think that spirit is like a big lab meeting rather than a class
the two new hires will help the department offer new classes they were previously unable to
and part of it is just to see what those new hires are attracted to and sort of where we can plug them in,” Treloar said.“Whatever either of them does
just to build the programs and make them stronger is always good.”
Treloar said he is optimistic about the future of the math department with the additions of Serang and Slonim
“I’m just excited to have them come in,” Treloar said
We have a department that really gets along
and they seem like great guys that are gonna just fold into that pretty seamlessly.”

“She is happy because she has the change to speak out the truth,” Tubagus said on Thursday
Tubagus added his client had been ignorant of any possible cut of the funds reportedly used to finance her gubernatorial campaign—as was revealed in prior hearings
“The cuts were made by Zainal Muttaqin
and she was not aware that the funds were spent on her roadshows or campaign
She did not know that kind of technical issues,” he said
The Banten Police deployed some 1,000 personnel to secure the court in light of the arrival of the province’s ex-ruler
“There are a thousand policemen deployed to safeguard the court

the general secretary of the National Union of Seafarers of India
gave Insider an update on their wellbeing on Friday
Serang told Insider that the crew of the Ever Given is safe and awaiting the results of the investigation
and added that reports about the status of the crew have been blown out of proportion
"We want the inquiry done so corrective measures can be taken in the future," Serang told Insider
"but we don't want to take a guess about house arrest
Let's not jump the gun and just wait for the results of the inquiry."
Serang told Insider he's optimistic that the crewmembers won't face consequences
"We are hopeful that the inquiry will come out that the seafarers end up clean," Serang said
the reports are that it was purely a weather-related incident."
Initial investigations suggested the ship became beached due to high winds and ruled out any mechanical or engine failures
"Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement is a company of repute," Serang said
"and the company and union have an agreement in place
All the things will be taken care of and there is no cause to worry whatsoever."
According to a spokesperson for Evergreen Marine Corporation
the filing is in relation to the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 and relates to liability and compensation claims related to the beached ship
The preemptive lawsuit was filed to limit the potential damages faced by the owners of the Ever Given and was not filed in retaliation against the ship's crew, The Maritime Executive reported.
Rising heat and humidity could drive temperatures beyond human tolerance

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has published the second chapter of its most sweeping assessment in seven years on the effects of global warming on Monday
The 36-page summary report covers the impact of warming on biodiversity, economy, food security, health and mental health with a dire warning for rising extreme weather events
This report is believed to be the most worrying account yet on rising temperatures across the world
Some of these damages are irreversible even at 1.5C of global warming
The report urges “concerted anticipatory global action” to avoid missing “a brief and rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all”
Here are some of the key takeaways for Asian countries from the report
Rising threat of heatwaves across Asia
Rising heat and humidity could drive the temperatures beyond the tolerance levels of humans if emissions are not cut down
adding that the likelihood of the threat of heatwaves across Asia is set to increase
Southeast and South Asian countries have already been witnessing extreme temperatures
the report warns that rising instances of heatwaves coupled with drought and fast urbanisation without climate sensitive planning will most severely impact the marginalised population
The report refers to wet-bulb temperatures
A wet-bulb temperature of 31C is dangerous for humans while 35C and above is unsurvivable for an average human being for more than six hours
While the current wet bulb temperatures in Asian countries remain well below 30C
the report warns many coastal areas would reach extremely dangerous wet-bulb temperatures if emissions are not cut
Increased floods and droughts, together with heat stress, will have an adverse impact on food availability and prices of food resulting in increased undernourishment in South and Southeast Asia, the IPCC report says with high confidence.
Global warming led extreme weather events will increasingly limit crop production if temperatures continue to rise, the report warns, adding that water scarcity could impact 40 per cent of people in India by 2050.
By the mid-21st Century, the international transboundary river basins of Amu Darya, Indus, Ganges could face severe water scarcity challenges due to climatic variability and changes acting as stress multipliers, the report adds.
Countries like India that are heavily reliant on agricultural production will see their rice and maize production fall while there will also be a decline in fisheries.
Glacier outbursts to threaten mountainous regions
Glacier lake outburst flood (GLOF) will threaten the securities of the local and downstream communities in high mountain Asia, the IPCC report assesses.
It says with medium confidence that glacier melting in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region will intensify. Both the Ganges and Brahmaputra river basins will also see increased flooding as a result of climate change, particularly if warming passes 1.5 degrees Celsius.
By 2050, it is likely that 69 per cent of fundamental human infrastructure in the Pan Arctic will be at risk, the report states.
Sea-level rise will threaten people, land use patterns and infrastructure
Meanwhile, global sea levels will likely rise 44-76cm this century if governments meet their current emission-cutting pledges as per the report. With faster emissions cuts, the increase could be limited to 28-55cm.
As sea levels rise, more land will be submerged, flooded regularly, eroded, or become unsuitable for agriculture due to saltwater intrusion.
Specifically, coastal cities and settlements will face increasing risk.
Climate change is increasing vector-borne and water-borne diseases, undernutrition, mental disorders and allergic diseases in Asia by increasing the hazards such as heatwaves, flooding and drought, air pollutants, in combination with more exposure and vulnerability, the IPCC report says.
In addition to all-cause mortality, deaths related to circulatory, respiratory, diabetic and infectious disease, as well as infant mortality are increased with high temperature, it adds.
Increases in heavy rain and temperature will increase the risk of diarrheal diseases, dengue fever and malaria in tropical and subtropical Asia. More frequent hot days and intense heat-waves will increase heat-related deaths in Asia.
Asian countries are experiencing a hotter summer climate, resulting in increase of energy demand for cooling at a rapid rate, together with the population growth, the report says.
Decrease in precipitation influences energy demand as well, as desalination, underground water pumping and other energyintensive methods are increasingly used for water supply.
Among thirteen developing countries with large energy consumption in Asia, eleven are exposed to high energy insecurity and industrial systems risk.
Observed biodiversity or habitat loss of animals or plants was linked to climate change in some parts of Asia, the report says.
Future climate change will reduce suitable habitat of protected plants while the risk of irreversible loss of coral reefs, tidal marshes, seagrass meadows, plankton community and other marine and coastal ecosystems increases with global warming, it says.

a University of Montana assistant professor of computer science
recently was awarded the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious award for junior faculty
The Faculty Early Career Development Program
annually awards faculty members across the nation who exemplify the role of teacher-scholar through outstanding research
excellent education and the integration of both education and research
Serang’s CAREER grant will total $1.05 million
He will use the funding to address unmet computer science needs in analyzing mass spectrometry data
his research team will work to statistically identify proteins in a biological sample
as well as reveal which biological species or bacterial and viral strains are in a sample
The team also will try to identify the makeup of basic molecular ingredients in a sample
“We often think of DNA and genomics as the be-all and end-all for advancing biology and medicine,” Serang said
“But since you started from a single cell
essentially every cell in your body is genetically identical
The mathematical algorithms we develop are key to uncovering what differentiates a bone cell from a liver cell and to the future of diagnostic medicine
where we develop the ability to diagnose infectious diseases using only a drop of blood.”
He said this approach can be used to learn about chemical structure without any prior knowledge of what’s in the sample
CAREER grants are highly prestigious awards that provide foundational support to early career faculty who have the potential to serve as role models in research and education
Such awards enable a lifetime of leadership in integrating education with research
between 350 and 400 assistant professors nationally earn CAREER grants
Serang is an impressive new faculty member in computer science whose approach to research is highly interdisciplinary – a trait that is essential in solving the problems of the future,” said Jenny McNulty
dean of UM’s College of Humanities and Sciences
"His work uses tools from mathematics to develop fast algorithms that often have applications in biology
he joins the ranks of the top scientists at UM who have gone on to have very successful careers
and I look forward to seeing how he advances the field of combinatorial algorithms.”
The approaches used by Serang’s lab will be used for a new season of the “Exploring Scientific Wilderness” podcast
as well as an intuitive curriculum for teaching combinatorics in K-12 schools
These fun exercises will be taught in Montana schools
and instruction plans will be posted online for free use by teachers and parents around the world
