18 Mar 2025 06:21 WIB · English
KOMPAS – Head of the Simpang Empat Police Criminal Investigation Unit Ipda Ahmad Efendi was presented as a suspect in the reconstruction of the death of high school student Pandu Brata Siregar (18) in Asahan Regency
Pandu died after being arrested and allegedly abused by officers
The North Sumatra Police's Professional and Security Division went to Asahan to question a number of police officers
"We are still waiting for the results of the Polda Propam investigation
All those involved are being investigated to see who is guilty or not," said Head of the North Sumatra Police Public Information Sub-Division
a number of police officers at the Simpang Empat Police were questioned over Pandu's death
Propam Polda Sumut went to Asahan to ensure the investigation into Pandu's death was carried out transparently
Asahan Police have conducted a reconstruction of Pandu's death case on Monday
investigators also conducted an exhumation or disinterment of Pandu's grave to determine the cause of death
Second Inspector Ahmad Efendi was presented as a suspect
namely Dimas Adrianto alias Bagol and Yudi Siswoyo
Bagol played a role in monitoring illegal racing as instructed by Efendi
He then reported illegal racing on a road in Simpang Empat District
Efendi and Yudi then went to the location of the illegal racing to break up and arrest the perpetrators of illegal racing
Siti said that they would immediately explain the chronology and results of the investigation carried out by the North Sumatra Regional Police
The results of the investigation by the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) North Sumatra found that Pandu died due to abuse when arrested by the police
"The arrest began when Pandu and eight other friends were watching a running race on Sunday (9/3/2025) in the early hours of the morning," said KontraS North Sumatra Advocacy Staff Ady Yoga Kemit
running race is a term they use for a running race with a bet of money
Pandu did not participate in the running race
Based on the statements of several witnesses
at that location there was no illegal racing as mentioned by the police
"When the race was about to start at 00.30 WIB
several police officers came to break up the event
Warning shots were fired causing the crowd to scatter," said Ady
Pandu and four other friends were riding a motorbike together
Pandu was in fourth position and his other friend
Pandu was alone because his friend ran away
Several residents heard Pandu's screams for mercy and help during the incident
The police stepped on and kicked Pandu's stomach
Pandu was then taken to Simpang Empat Health Center to stitch the wound on his temple
"He was then taken to Simpang Empat Police Station to undergo a urine test
The first test result was negative and the second test was unclear
the police stated that Pandu had a positive drug result," said Ady
The victim was then picked up by his nephew
The victim said that he was hit and kicked twice by the police
Pandu also complained of pain in his stomach
Pandu was taken by his family and friends to Kisaran Regional Hospital
X-ray results showed blood spots in the victim's epigastrium and stomach
The victim's condition continued to worsen until Pandu was declared dead at 16:30
"KontraS North Sumatra strongly condemns the extrajudicial killings committed by members of the National Police
We ask that this case be thoroughly investigated and monitored by the National Human Rights Commission," said Ady

Iklan Banjarmasin’s ‘Old Town’ is Booming Again From afternoon to late evening
Simpang Hasanuddin HM in Banjarmasin is never empty
Audio Berita By JUMARTO YULIANUS · 5 minutes read TEKS KOMPAS/JUMARTO YULIANUSDozens of young people hang out in the Old Town area of Banjarmasin or Bandarmasih Tempo Doeloe in Banjarmasin City
the old shopping area on Jalan Simpang Hasanuddin HM is crowded with visitors because there are many food and drink shops that are fun for culinary hunting as well as hangouts
New stalls have made the area a culinary and hangout hub
Simpang Hasanuddin HM (bin Haji Madjedi) in Banjarmasin is never empty
four young men entered one of the coffee shops on the street
which is the icon of Banjarmasin’s Old Town
they came out carrying plastic cups filled with iced milk coffee
One of the men carried four plastic chairs and placed them around a wooden table
> Tempting Banjarese Food
> River Tourism Revival during Ramadan
and his friends often hang out in the old shopping area on Jl
now better known as the Kota Lama (Old Town) area of Banjarmasin
or Banjarmasin Tempo Doeloe (Banjarmasin of the past)
we can hang out here three times," said Tole (29)
the area becomes more crowded and it gets difficult to find a seat
the majority of visitors sit outdoors on plastic chairs
Simpang Hasanuddin HM and sitting in small groups
is closed from the afternoon for motorized vehicles
Visitors sitting in groups can order food and drinks at any stall
The shop attendants are always ready to deliver orders to customers
even if they have to walk dozens of meters or enter another stall
said the Kota Lama area had been getting busier lately
The stalls in the Kota Lama area sell a variety of goods
the dominant products are still drinks and food
from the goods it sells to its exterior and interior design
The old shop houses that were previously dull and neglected have changed a lot
Visitors pass through the Old Town of Banjarmasin or Bandarmasih Tempo Doeloe in Banjarmasin City
who has lived in the Kota Lama area for 30 years
said that the area was built in 1976 to 1980 after the Pasar Lima and Pasar Sudimampir commercial areas
The commercial complexes are 500 meters from the Kota Lama area
“The stalls here were busy until the 1990s
Many moved because their sales were not good here,” he said
The shop houses in the Kota Lama area were then often leased as warehouses
"There are five families who still live here
Simpang Hasanuddin HM started becoming an area for young people to gather because of a coffee shop that opened there
which was started by a young man from a reggae group
has become a magnet for a commercial area that had been neglected for more than 20 years
the Roti Terang Stall appeared next to Kotalama Koffie
The manager of the bakery is also a young person in a reggae band
the shopping area became crowded since the two stalls set up shop
Awi is happy to see the commercial area come back to life
even though he was a bit nervous at first about the crowds that stayed until midnight
"I am grateful to see the change today in the area where we live
because it can finally open up business opportunities and revive the community's economy," he said
> Metamorphosis of Poor Urban Slums
The area has revived because of the grassroots creative economy
The Banjarmasin municipal administration then eyed reviving the commercial area on Jl
The area was then named Bandarmasih Tempo Doeloe
Banjarmasin Mayor Ibnu Sina inaugurated Bandarmasih Tempo Doeloe as a culinary tourism destination and hangout place with an authentic atmosphere
such as drainage and pedestrian paths," said Ibnu Sina
a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business of Lambung Mangkurat University
Simpang Hasanuddin HM was just one of business centers in Banjarmasin that had long been abandoned
If there was no innovation or intervention from the municipal administration
The municipal administration actually didn't care about the area before the coffee shop and bakery arrived
or young people started a creative industry
"The area has come back to life because of the creative economy movement from the grassroots
not from the municipal administration," Arief said
the municipal administration has still contributed by providing training or assistance to businesses
providing a larger public space for creative businesses and preparing better facilities and infrastructure
"If there was no innovation or intervention from the municipal administration
the area might have died again," said Arief
The creativity of entrepreneurs and visiting residents can be said to sustain the businesses in Bandarmasih Tempo Doeloe
All parties must strive so that the economic activities do not disappear again

Business owners and residents in Cameron Highlands are questioning the lengthy closure of a vital access road following a landslide

“This is not acceptable. We’re talking about a major highway that connects thousands of people and businesses. Emergency repairs should be completed within days, not weeks,” said Dilip Martin, president of the Regional Environmental Awareness Cameron Highlands (REACH)
He pointed to Japan’s efficient infrastructure management as an example
Look at how Japan handles such emergencies
They work round the clock because they understand the economic impact of road closures
Why can’t we adopt a similar urgency here
Japan fixes vast Fukuoka city sinkhole – in two days https://t.co/sBkJMc2P28 pic.twitter.com/m1Rm63VTDx
the modern dual-carriageway has been closed
forcing all traffic to use the old Tapah road—a narrow
winding route never designed to handle current traffic volumes
Martin added that businesses are suffering
Tourists are cancelling bookings because they don’t want to spend hours stuck in traffic on the Tapah road
with heavy vehicles and tourist buses trying to navigate its sharp bends
They should clear enough space for at least one lane and implement traffic controls
The current situation is choking our highland community
While alternative routes via Gua Musang and Jelai exist
these lengthy detours make them impractical
READ MORE: Cameron Highlands’ Recurring Nightmare: Another Landslide Strikes
The Public Works Department (JKR) extended the closure
citing ongoing soil movement and limited debris dumping space
JRK Perak said only 10% of clearing work had been completed since 1 November
partly because the rain had hampered operations
local stakeholders argue that the road could be partially reopened while remedial works continue on the affected section at KM43.4
The prolonged closure highlights the vulnerability of Cameron Highlands’ infrastructure and the impact on its tourism industry
businesses fear further losses if the road reopening faces additional delays
Tanah Rata assemblyman Ho Chi Yang from DAP has also expressed concern about the extended closure’s impact on local communities and businesses
The government has allocated RM480 million for road repair and infrastructure improvements in Cameron Highlands as part of the Budget 2023 initiative
This investment aims to enhance transport and alleviate congestion in the area
the road’s condition has deteriorated
leading to the current closure – a situation that has left many questioning the project’s planning and execution
Slope repair work at the Simpang Pulai-Cameron Highlands route started in July 2022 and is expected to be completed by December 2025
The work will cost RM122 million, while another RM10 million is needed for repair following the recent landslide

Another lorry crash has occurred this morning
this time on the North-South expressway from Simpang Renggam to Machap
The earliest official report from the PLUS Trafik X/Twitter channel states that the incident occurred at 8:09am
at KM69.5 northbound from Simpang Renggam to Machap
resulting in the obstruction of all lanes at the time
PLUS Trafik stated that all northbound lanes remained obstructed
Contraflow traffic has been activated from KM72 to KM69 on the right-hand-side lane of the southbound side of the highway
According to handheld video on X/Twitter
a passenger car involved was carrying three occupants
while a motorcyclist was also involved and has died at the scene
the alleged cause of the incident was a blowout of the lorry’s tyre
Today’s lorry crash involving other passenger vehicles comes after a prior incident in Bukit Mertajam, Penang
where a container lorry was depicted taking an intersection at speed
and the container on its trailer dislodged and fell on a car stopped in traffic at the intersection
The 21-year-old driver of the passenger vehicle succumbed to her injuries

Container trailers and express buses speeding dangerously and tailgating smaller vehicles even at 120km/h is a daily occurrence on all our highways
but JPJ does nothing because semua dah kenyang
Our “most useless MOT in the country since Merdeka” has absolutely no intention to enforce any rules and is only interested in selling number plates
Road bullies with fully pitch-black window tints are also becoming a common occurrence now
All these criminals are indebted to the useless MOT for enabling their daily shenanigans to continue unfettered
All heavy vehicles should have max speed permanently restricted to 60km/h
Drivers can’t be trusted to drive safely
I guess Minister Loke will again say suspension of permit
However that won’t make anybody learn
You need to put the driver and owner in jail
only then all will learn in placing safety as no.1 priority
Imagine this – what if the deceased is your family member
Don’t just busy sell number plates BUT think of how to reduce accidents especially those involved heavy vehicles and with fatalities
By your logic might as well put the lorry factory boss in jail as well
putting someone in jail involves police and courts
transport minister alone don’t have the power
Your labubu plush toy ordered during 11.11 will never be delivered to you
Take note to cancel order and request refund
Lokechatgor busy selling number plates and not doing anything else
He must be a former pasar malam trader or VCD seller because he has no administrative know-how and only knows how to sell number plates
Here we have seasons that something happens quite offten frequently like sink holes once then every time all around Malaysia then now season is lorry can’t ctrl and we Rakyat become victims
lorries simply can’t overturn there r reasons specially driver not well trained (major reason)r a b c and X y z
How many accident involving heavy vehicle needed before Anthony Loke and JPJ take action against logistic company who allows drivers with outstanding saman and old lorry drive around
My older brother said he got a friend who are bus driver said all lorry and bus in Malaysia is used 15-20 years ago model when those transport company bought them
The use of retread tyre should be banned entirely even if it is for rear lorry used
that’s a testament of how safe Honda cars especially the Civic
when you are within/close to cars involved in crash … do not smoke… your never know when or where the leak will catch the little heat from the cigarette
ordinary lorry owners need to test three times only can pass
Disiplin pemandu lori kontena dgn lori tangki sgt berbeza

SIMPANG PULAI: The Ministry of Works (KKR) will construct a permanent rock shed measuring 100-metre in length to address slope failure issues at Federal Route FT185 Simpang Pulai - Blue Valley (Cameron Highlands)
said Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi
He said the construction is still in the planning stage
requires research on design and safety features and is expected to be completed within two years
“I came to see the current situation following the (landslide) incident on Oct 23
and I am satisfied that the temporary measures taken to secure the area have been well-executed
“I was informed that these temporary measures are expected to be completed by the end of December
after which the permanent rock shed construction will commence with a fairly large allocation,” he told reporters after inspecting the slope repair works on the road today
Nanta said KKR proposed that the route be reopened to the public starting Nov 25
while slope and road repair works continue during the day
we would like to seek the cooperation of all parties
not just the Public Works Department (JKR)
but also local representatives and the public
“I understand that this is a vegetable farming area
so I appeal for everyone’s patience as these works must be properly completed
the road will remain unsafe and pose risks to lives,” he said in response to complaints from vegetable farmers regarding the road closure
the Kinta District JKR received a report of a landslide at the federal route
The estimated height of the landslide was 70 metres
a traffic management plan was implemented immediately at the site
involving the closure of one lane with 24-hour monitoring by the concessionaire on the same day
prompting a full closure of both lanes effective on Oct 25 to prevent potential accidents
“I had a few customers who were really upset about this decision
We missed out on a lot of amazing opportunities for collaborations due to the fact that we were a home-based business,” said Ground Floor Coffee’s owner
Ground Floor Coffee initially operated out of a ground-floor HDB flat in Pasir Ris
Ground Floor Coffee attracted a lot of viral attention
The home-based cafe operated out of a ground-floor HDB flat in Pasir Ris
Hasif picked up coffee brewing out of interest before deciding to open a small business serving cuppas to his neighbourhood folks
His quaint concept soon attracted customers from all over Singapore
To manage the human traffic outside his apartment's window
Hasif implemented a reservations-only ordering system
and customers have to pick up their beverages based on specific time slots
After I set up the online ordering system and collection method
it was smooth as butter,” Hasif told 8days.sg
his capacity was limited by space and regulations
Hasif closed his little window shop for bigger plans: An actual
takeaway-only cafe at East Village mall at Simpang Bedok that opened on Sep 22
“It was a very tough decision for me and my wife to actually step out and set up a cafe
We understood that people loved our window concept because the whole experience was unique
and it was something new that we did back then before there were other Ground Floor Coffee-inspired concepts,” Hasif shared
He did “small collaborations and appearances here and there” with a few local brands
we also missed a lot of other amazing opportunities for collaborations due to the fact that we were a home-based business,” he pointed out
Calling it “surreal” and a “leap of faith”
Hasif revealed that he and his wife “actually cried” after they decided to close their home cafe and open a brick-and-mortar shop
“I had a few customers who were really upset as well about this decision
I agree that the experience now is totally different from when we served coffee from a window
but I hope with the aesthetics we added to the cafe
it brings back memories of our iconic window,” said Hasif
His daughter is enrolled for primary school next year
Hasif added: “My wife and I want to let her have her own space [at home] as well
it was very convenient to work from home with my kids around me
but I feel it’s about time we step out and focus on growing our business and making it sustainable.”
Hasif has expanded his menu offerings to include filter coffee and light desserts like Lemon Thyme and Earl Grey Dark Chocolate tartlets
There are also coffee beverages he used to serve from his window
brewed with a “GFC seasonal” bean blend that he sources exclusively from local cafe Fluid Collective
the blend is a mix of single-origin beans from Mexico and Colombia
though Hasif shared that it will change to beans from other provenances when they are in season
When we ask if prices are higher at his cafe
Hasif confirmed that his menu now costs “a few cents more compared to back at home” to cater for higher overheads
but of course the prices differ according to the food delivery platforms.”
He shared: “I want to focus on growing this brand and catch up with all the missed opportunities
But I did receive interesting offers to open another outlet here and also in Australia!”
Ground Floor Coffee is at #01-53 East Village Mall

Leni Kumala and her husband Welly Effendi didn’t plan on opening an Indonesian restaurant when they first came to Los Angeles from their home country
it was a small grocery store in Palms selling Indonesian products
and they noted that there was nowhere to get these items without going to the San Gabriel Valley
Simpang Asia is a full service restaurant with two locations in LA and is one of the most popular places in the city to get Indonesian food
I sat down over a meal with owner Leni Kumala to hear about how Simpang Asia first started
I ordered the grilled tilapia with soy garlic sauce and Leni suggested we get cah kangkung (stir fried water spinach with garlic belacan sauce)
“It goes very well with the fish,” Leni noted
Leni began to tell the story about how Simpang Asia slowly made the shift into a restaurant
A couple of years after opening Simpang Asia as a grocery store
a few Indonesian home cooks had asked Leni and Welly to sell some of their prepared foods at the store
but the health department soon shut it down since Simpang Asia had no kitchen
The incident prompted them to rent out the kitchen at the bakery next door
The bakery was only using the kitchen in the morning
so Simpang Asia started to cook and sell a simple takeout menu at lunch using Welly’s recipes
Leni and Welly decided to take over the space and opened a small cafe while still operating the grocery store
the now-shuttered Ramayani and Indo Cafe were the only other places to get Indonesian food outside of SGV
“We noticed our customers were mostly students
so we decided to go that route,” said Lenny on their decision to make Simpang Asia more affordable with a casual environment that would attract the younger crowds
Simpang Asia became popular with Indonesian students attending UCLA and Santa Monica College
I remember devouring rice combos in styrofoam takeout containers brought back to my dorms
or getting a whole fried fish with rice when a friend with a car offered to drive to the cafe
Nasi bungkus – a rice dish with beef rendang
and vegetable curry all wrapped up in banana leaf that adds a special aroma – has been one of their signature items since the early days of the cafe
Jakarta-born Jenny Widjaja moved to the Los Angeles area in 2004
and she remembered going to Simpang Asia for the first time in 2005 when she was taking classes at nearby UCLA Extension after fellow students told her about it
Jenny really liked getting the extra spicy fried rice called nasi goreng jagger
every time I ate it I couldn’t even finish it
but I still kept ordering it because it was so good,” she said
most of Simpang Asia’s dishes are not nearly as spicy as this one!)
The current menu showcases the various influences on Indonesian cuisine – a fascinating glimpse into the country’s history
There are Chinese-Indonesian staples such as kwetiaw goreng (stir fried flat rice noodles)
Arabic-influenced street food like martabak
and a comforting oxtail soup brought to Indonesia by Europeans during the colonial era
All of these dishes are commonly eaten in Indonesia to this day
there are also traditional Indonesian plates like nasi kuning
a celebratory yellow turmeric rice dish served with chicken sate
Since the cafe originally catered to Indonesian students
quite a few dishes were inspired by the street food that students in Indonesia eat with friends after school
Snacks like siomay bandung (steamed shrimp and chicken dumplings with tofu and egg served in a peanut sauce) and bakso (a beef meatball soup) are sold on street carts near high schools and colleges throughout Indonesia
and Simpang Asia turned into the go-to for Indonesian college kids in L.A.
a gathering place filled with nostalgic food
Asian groceries have been made more widely available at mainstream grocery stores and online
and more Asian markets opened in the surrounding neighborhoods
can now be found on Amazon and even at Ralph’s
The demand for Simpang Asia’s groceries dwindled
so a few years ago they decided to close down the grocery section
They opened a second location in Venice at the end of 2020
initially choosing the location for its proximity to Palms
They thought they would primarily use the second location to help prep during busy dinner service and run food to the original location
but soon the Venice location became just as busy
Although Indonesian cuisine has gotten more exposure lately in Los Angeles
there are still only a handful of places to get Indonesian food in the city – and a couple of them have closed due to the pandemic
Simpang Asia has come a long way from its early days as a tiny market – according to the owners
their current customers are 60% non-Asians
a big change from the early days when the customer pool was composed of 95% Indonesians
Leni and Welly didn’t change the menu much
still maintaining the flavors of home and introducing the breadth of Indonesian cuisine to more and more Angelenos
