an opportunity that allowed me to dive into field reporting and gain hands-on journalism experience
my phone became my most valuable tool for capturing the electric atmosphere
Singkawang was alive with thousands of people
immortalising every moment through their cameras
preserving their memories of this extraordinary celebration
none was more captivating than the dragon parade
Nine brilliantly colored dragons danced their way through the streets
their bodies rippling in perfect harmony like waves of a river
Yet, the true heart of Cap Go Meh lies in the Tatung parade
a soul-stirring display of spiritual devotion and cultural fusion
believed to be possessed by deities or ancestral spirits
donned elaborate costumes that symbolised the divine forces they embodied
What followed was nothing short of mind-boggling
The Tatung parade is not merely a spectacle but an embodiment of identity

Determined to capture every moment, I teamed up with Mesya Marasabessy, a journalist from Tribun Ambon

The tatung are a product of Chinese-Dayak acculturation that has been around for centuries
Cultural observer and former Singkawang mayor Hasan Karman said the city had seen intensive Chinese-Dayak acculturation since between the mid-1700s and the 1800s
there were many mining ventures in Monterado (currently part of Bengkayang regency)
Common Chinese-Dayak marriages support this acculturation
The acculturation that manifests itself in the tatung tradition is possible because both the Dayak and Chinese ethnic groups have traditions that involve supernatural powers and ancestral spirits
there was once an outbreak of disease in Monterado
the outbreak was caused by an evil spirit and a cleansing of the city was necessary
a ritual of parading Chinese and Dayak tatung was held
The ritual ended up becoming a tradition inherited through generations to be held during the Cap Go Meh celebration
The tradition was preserved for centuries as all ethnic groups hold firmly to their cultural heritage
The tatung parade as a product of acculturation has become a well-preserved shared property
West Kalimantan-based Chinese cultural observer XF Asali said tatung
is derived from a religious tradition of Taoists in mainland China
in which a person is possessed by the spirits of ancestral warriors or heroes
tatung are also believed to be able to treat people suffering from mysterious diseases that are hard to explain with modern medicinal science
people from the village would ask tatung for help if they had any illness
This was due to financial reasons and the absence of modern medical professionals in the village,” Asali said
Tatung in Singkawang have gone through acculturation
so that local spirits may also possess them
some tatung are possessed by the spirits of Dayak war commanders

Singkawang Mayor Tjhai Chui Mie said that Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh celebrations in Singkawang are hoped to serve as social capital in a diverse society
The social capital is necessary as a resource for regional development
People have an active role in achieving this as a way of contributing to regional development,” he said
Maintaining a spirit of togetherness and harmony is a collective effort

s Indonesia gradually opens its borders to foreign travelers
here are some of the hidden gems of the archipelago to explore on your next visit
Indonesia is perhaps the world’s worst kept secret
tens of millions of foreign visitors arrived each year to travel the country
though many ended up touring the usual destinations: the historic quarters of Yogyakarta
It’s always a good idea to take the road less traveled while also avoiding the tourist crush
The sprawling archipelago is home to a complex history
fascinating cultures and some of the most unspoiled natural wonders anywhere on earth
While some of the places below might not be the easiest to reach
you’ll realize the trip was absolutely worth it
The sea has fundamentally changed the country’s eastern regions through its ties to Indonesia’s colonial past
inexorably linked to the “Spice Islands” of Maluku
But Sumba has remained relatively isolated
As it has precious few resources and marketable commodities
it has existed on the margins of consciousness for many visitors
So when you arrive on the island via the readily available flights to Waingapu
unspoiled landscapes and some of the best beaches the country has to offer
The eastern part of Sumba is probably the most economically advanced region
with an abundance of affordable cottages and homestays
It is also a great place to hunt for the distinctive Sumbanese ikat textile
Head to the central highlands and you’ll find spectacular hills for long road trips and adventures into the wild
If beaches and resorts are more your style
head to the southwestern part of the island
If distant sunsets over dramatic landscapes
melancholy traditional songs from village bards and spectacular drives are what you are looking for
the island’s nutmegs turned Banda Neira into a bloody battleground between several European colonial powers centuries ago
Neira’s native spice was worth its weight in gold and the Spice Wars turned the beautiful island into an economic prize and a cage for its many inhabitants
who were forced to work on nutmeg plantations
There’s no way of tiptoeing around Banda Neira’s dark and tragic history
the scars of which are still visible across its rugged landscape
as do stark reminders of colonial plantations
But beyond these are a cornucopia of lush mountains
pristine beaches and spectacular dive sites
An island paradise that has been restored from its past as hell on earth
anyone interested in history and the human condition would do well to pay a visit to Banda Neira
which also offers regular ferry trips to other islands in eastern Indonesia
The Mentawai island chain broke off from mainland Sumatra 500,000 years ago
the Mentawai people developed a culture that is distinct from anywhere else in Indonesia
Even though outside influences and migrants started creeping in during the 20th century
keeping to the local traditions that maintain the community’s deep connection with their land
One of its most notable traditions is their tattoo culture
which uses a unique poking technique that you can only get by traveling deep into the heartland of Mentawai Island
and you’ll understand why Mentawai is enjoying a burgeoning reputation among surfers
most consistent and challenging waves in the country
and its sandy shores attract the world’s top surfers and yacht sailors alike
There’s a case to be made that anywhere in Java
by far the country’s most economically advanced island
the perspective on Java is often obscured by the bright lights of its metropolises and its quaint palaces in Central Java
and you’ll find wonders that are easily accessible by rail and plane
The Ijen Crater would be a monumental feat for any enthusiastic trekkers who will delight in its electric blue fire
a natural phenomenon that occurs at only one other location
Baluran National Park is a picturesque savanna where the wildlife roams free
The more enterprising travelers will seek immersion in Banyuwangi’s unique cultural legacy
Once isolated from the rest of Java and unfairly maligned as a haven of bandits
the city has developed a unique cultural identity as clearly expressed in its signature shaman dance, jaranan buto
Located along the coast of West Kalimantan
One of the few cities in the country with a majority Chinese-Indonesian population
visiting Singkawang will feel like stepping into a parallel universe where things are not quite Indonesian and not quite Chinese
it has sandy beaches and spectacular landscapes to soothe nature lovers
but it also has beautifully designed temples throughout the city
Each Chinese New Year and Capgomeh (the 15th day after Chinese New Year)
Singkawang comes alive with parades and ceremonies
a festival of light and color that will bewilder and bedazzle any visitor
it is almost a cardinal sin not to spend time delving into Singkawang’s rich
unique culinary legacy at the famous Pasar Hongkong

Chinese men who are looking abroad for wives are turning increasingly to poor regions of Indonesia
where young women have become prey for scheming matchmakers promising a good life abroad
is one of the few who have managed to return safely to Indonesia after escaping a bad marriage that she said included domestic violence and unpaid labour for her Chinese husband
Her story began in September last year when she met two Chinese men looking for prospective brides in Indonesia through matchmakers in Pontianak and Singkawang
She said was promised a good life if she married one of the men: a monthly allowance from her future husband
as well as some money for her to send to her parents who live in Singkawang
She chose the younger of the two men she was introduced to in Singkawang
after a two-hour encounter assisted by an interpreter and a matchmaker
"I agreed to marry him as I was single and was looking for a husband," Monika told a news conference in Jakarta just a day after she returned from China in late June
said she was then given 18 million rupiah (US$1,300) as a dowry
The next step in the whirlwind courtship came when she was taken to a beauty salon for a makeover
after which the couple exchanged rings and posed for a wedding photo
They also signed a civil marriage registration document at the office of a foundation that religiously endorsed the union
A woman -- believed to be one of the accomplices in the whole process and described by Monika as her "fake mom" -- was present and posed as her mother and guardian
The marriage certificate was necessary to prove her status as the man's wife in order to obtain essential documents to arrange for her travel to China with her new husband
She was also promised that they would have a wedding party in her husband's hometown
she and her husband flew to China to start a new life in Hebei province
but she soon found out that the sweet promises were just a pack of lies
Monika said the matchmakers had said that one of them would fly with her to China to help her settle into her new home
"But on the day of my departure from Pontianak airport
I already sensed something was wrong," Monika said
Monika couldn't communicate properly with her husband as she doesn't speak English or Chinese
Conversations with her construction worker husband were limited to a translation app on the mobile phone he gave her
and even those were infrequent as internet access was poor
They lived in an apartment with her mother in law
who made her work long hours making decorative paper flowers but didn't pay her
in addition to all the household chores that Monika had to do
Monika said her mother in law also did nothing to help when her husband abused her
for reasons such as refusing to have sex with him because she said she was exhausted from working long hours
"When my mother in law woke up early in the morning and I didn't because I had barely slept
she would make noises in the apartment so I couldn't sleep and I would wake up," Monika said
With limited access to the internet from her phone and the Chinese Sim card her husband gave her
Monika eventually was able to communicate with her mother in Indonesia
who sought help from a local chapter of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (SBMI) to release her daughter from the unhappy marriage
the coordinator of the Mempawah chapter of SBMI in West Kalimantan
told Asia Focus that Monika's mother approached the group in April to speak about her daughter's ordeal
With the help of fellow Indonesians in China and the SBMI network
Monika managed to escape and finally returned to Indonesia at the end of June
Mahadir claims that rogue officials from government agencies may have been involved by providing blank official marriage certificates to the matchmakers
Mahadir said the union had been able to identify a ring of matchmakers who are related to one another and treat this as their family business
it is very difficult to track down the syndicate and prove criminal intent in the case
as matchmakers are often referred to by their single nicknames and introduced as a friend or a relative
Advocates from SBMI and the Jakarta-based Legal Aid Institute said that although Monika consented to be married to her Chinese husband
the conditions set to coax her into the marriage were enough to constitute as a human trafficking case
13 from West Kalimantan and 16 from West Java
who were lured by a syndicate of criminal matchmakers to marry Chinese men they barely knew over the past three years
"I had a chance to meet a fellow Indonesian woman who also married a Chinese man
but she told me still wanted to stay," Monika said
SBMI secretary-general Bobi Anwar Ma'arif told Asia Focus that it was difficult to make a case of human trafficking based on Monika's plight in China
as it was considered domestic violence that would have to be handled under local law
the women's vulnerability coming from underprivileged backgrounds and forgery of their documents
makes this a human trafficking case," Bobi said
adding that similar cases have been reported in Cambodia and Vietnam
High demand for "mail-order brides" among Chinese men is a consequence of their country's decades-long one-child policy
under which the result of China's one-child policy in which parents preferred to have a son instead of a daughter
there are approximately 30 million more men than women of marriageable age in China
urged police and prosecutors to apply severe punishment in cases such as Monika's to create a deterrent to criminal matchmakers
"The light prison sentences handed down to similar human trafficking cases didn't do enough justice for the victims
We called on the attorney-general and the judges to review the existing judiciary system related to this case," Oky said
Following a tip from the migrant workers' union
the national police said they arrested eight people of Chinese nationality
and an Indonesian couple for their alleged involvement in the trafficking ring that tricked Indonesian women into marrying Chinese men
National police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo said the Indonesian suspects were paid 70 million rupiah as their fee for each woman they recruited
"The couple promised the women that they would live a good life in China
The suspects are now in custody of the immigration office while their case is being investigated," he said
Monika said she was just glad to be able to flee her abusive husband and mother in law
and for her marriage certificate to be annulled
"I was so stressed that I felt like I was going crazy there
I am glad I don't have a child with him," she said

Dec 19: Buses between Kuching and Singkawang are now operating with a ‘transfer’ at the Biawak-Aruk border here
pending approval for direct trips between the two cities
Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the Kuching-Singkawang bus service
is the second route after the success of the Kuching-Pontianak direct route
this new route requires passengers to transfer buses at the border
our bus from Kuching (Bus Asia) will stop at the border where passengers have to hop onto another designated bus from Singkawang (Damri) to continue their journey
“This is temporary because we are still waiting for Putrajaya’s approval to allow our buses to have a direct cross-border route between Kuching and Singkawang,” he said during the launching ceremony of Bus Asia-Damri’s Kuching-Singkawang new route at Biawak Customs
passengers can opt to use vans provided to ferry them from Biawak CIQS (Sarawak) to Aruk Border Post (Indonesia) at RM5 fee
The distance between both posts is less than 1,000 metres
Lee further said the two bus companies are currently operating the Kuching-Singkawang bus service for one trip daily
He also said his Ministry and the Indonesian counterpart will look into the possibility of opening other cross-border routes
The newly-opened route has recorded a total of 500 bus passengers to date
Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching
hoped that the direct route between Kuching and Singkawang could be implemented as soon as possible
“With this additional route after Kuching-Pontianak
we will have more bilateral interaction between Sarawak and West Kalimantan which would stimulate socioeconomic and trade activities in the future,” he said

Indonesia taps into Chinese culture to spur tourism growth at a challenging time
The Indonesian government has added another cultural event of its ethnic Chinese community to its official list of top attractions in a bid to lure more domestic and international tourists
Chap Goh Mei marks the end of the Chinese New Year period
and the most lavish celebrations take place in Singkawang
a coastal town of roughly 240,000 people in West Kalimantan on Borneo
About 40% of the town's residents are of Chinese descent
but the celebration itself is a fusion of Chinese
laden with mysticism and supernatural power
The highlight of the annual festival is the parade featuring Tatung
or people who are believed to have supernatural powers because they are possessed by the spirits of their ancestors or deities
Dressed in the colourful garb of traditional Chinese and Dayak warriors
more than 800 Tatung from Singkawang and neighbouring towns
thronged the town's main streets on the last day of the celebration on Feb 8
Spectators lining the parade route watched in awe as marchers demonstrated their supernatural abilities by having their faces and bodies pierced with sharp metal objects
backrest and armrest contain rows of sharp blades and arrows
"We are proud that Chap Goh Mei in Singkawang is included again in the tourism ministry's annual top 100 calendar of events
and has become one of the top festival destinations for tourists," Singkawang Mayor Tjhai Chui Mie said prior to the parade
The annual parade was the culmination of two weeks of festivities that started on Jan 23
It has become a main attraction to spur economic growth in Singkawang through the development of the real sector
Last year's festivities attracted 76,964 foreign and domestic tourists
acknowledged the festivities were the biggest tourism event in the province
I did not allow the Tatung parade to be held during the city's Chap Goh Mei celebration
so that it would remain the main attraction for Singkawang," he said
people believed to have supernatural powers
is the highlight of the Chap Goh Mei celebrations in Singkawang
"Pontianak can have the longest dragon dance but the Tatung parade should be the focus of Singkawang's Chap Goh Mei."
the main city on Sumba Island in central Indonesia
said he had come to the festivities because he was curious to see the Tatung parade in person
"I came here by myself and this is my first time in Singkawang," he told Asia Focus
"It turned out that Chap Goh Mei here is really amazing and just as spectacular as I have been seeing on television."
Hotels and homestays in the city were fully booked ahead of the parade
with room rates as much as four times higher than they normally are
Some tour operators even had to book rooms for their clients a year in advance
concern about the coronavirus in recent weeks led to some people having second thoughts about travelling
though Indonesia officially has reported no cases of infection yet
Hotel occupancy and visitor numbers slipped as a result
the manager of a homestay in Central Singkawang
said the rooms in his establishment were fully booked for the festivities
"But reservations and confirmations were slow and occurred at the last minute," he said
who comes from a family of Tatung and whose siblings from the Tho Fab Kiung temple took part in the parade
told Asia Focus that the crowds of spectators were smaller compared to last year
said her company took just one group of 31 tourists to Singkawang this year
"I think it was mainly due to the rising prices of plane tickets
instead of the coronavirus," she told Asia Focus
But another tour operator based in Pontianak
said the company had about 200 guests this year
"We see the number of clients increase every year," he told Asia Focus
"Ninety percent of our clients are domestic
and we also had a few foreign visitors from Japan and Australia who booked our private tours."
A Tatung is carried through the streets in a chair that most people would avoid at all costs
In a bid to attract more tourists to the city
which is about a four-hour drive from Pontianak
Mayor Thjai said the city has allocated and cleared an area of 15,145 hectares to build an airport and is seeking to develop it under a public-private partnership
the first phase of the airport will have a 1,400-metre runway that could accommodate ATR aircraft
A 2,600-metre runway that would allow a Boeing 737 to land could be developed in the future
the Tatung also toured the city performing a road cleansing ritual to ward off bad spirits
They also paid respect to their ancestors and deities by visiting various temples and houses of worship
which is known as the city of a thousand temples
An entourage from the Hok Lo Nam temple also took part in the ritual
Carrying five dolls made of rattan and dressed in colourful Chinese costumes
the entourage visited a cetiya at a century-old mansion belonging to the Thjia clan in the city centre
to pay their respect to the sea goddess to which the cetiya is dedicated
The dolls were believed to have been possessed by the spirits of their ancestors and deities
as well as a local Malay elder identified as Datuk Suleiman
More cities in the country with large populations of Chinese descent have been making Chap Goh Mei
with organisers buoyed by the tourism ministry's decision to place the festival on its official calendar of events
The West Java provincial administration has even disbursed 30 billion rupiah to revamp Suryakencana Street
the main street where the annual Chap Goh Mei parade is held in Bogor
"This is a show of support from the provincial administration," West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil said
"I hope when I come to next year's celebration
there will be an improvement in terms of the content of the festival
A classic strip mall find next to a badminton club
While the San Gabriel Valley is known for the depth of its regional Chinese cuisines
along with the large population that drives it
it’s also home to the largest Indonesian population in the United States
The result is several Indonesian restaurants scattered around the Valley
presenting various regional sub-styles of the cuisine
It speaks volumes that there are now two restaurants specializing in food from the island of Borneo
Singkawang Café joins Alhambra’s Borneo Kalimantan Cuisine in serving dishes from the island
Located in a three unit strip mall in El Monte
This might be the ideal location for an Indonesian restaurant considering the fast-paced racquet game is Indonesia’s national sport
which is badminton’s equivalent of the tennis Davis Cup
Indonesian cuisine is made up of diverse influences
from local indigenous peoples and Asian immigrants to Indian and European traders
which covers a large swath of ocean as the world’s largest archipelago
also lends itself to many regional variations and cuisines
The café is named for the city of Singkawang
which is located on the island’s west coast
with the historic immigrants bringing an even stronger influence to the regional cuisine
and nine Indonesian entrees — listed as Singkawang entrees
there’s surprisingly little overlap with the menu at Borneo Kalimantan
The most unique item among those specialties is choi pan
a dish not previously seen at local Indonesian restaurants
Choi pan are steamed dumplings that originated with Teochow Chinese immigrants to the island
and particularly to the west coast of the island
Rice and sago flour provide almost translucent wrappers around a filling consisting of chives and chopped jicama cooked with dried shrimp
with a potently spicy dipping sauce served alongside
Nearly every cuisine has some form of meatball soup
That’s the case in Indonesia with baso (also known as bakso)
a popular street food sold from stalls or push carts
Two types of meatballs — beef and pork/mixed meat are joined in a mild
yet well-seasoned broth by two types of rice noodles — thin vermicelli and flat noodles
a spicy and sweet mixed fruit and vegetable salad
The dish is popular across Indonesia as well as in Malaysia
There are many different variations of the dish across the many islands
The version at Singkawang is comprised of thinly sliced carrots
and ground peanuts with ground shrimp powder spread atop
Diners can pick their own level of spiciness
Yet another unique item is hakong singkawang
shrimp paste wrapped in deep fried tofu skin
served with a sweet and sour sauce on the side
Shrimp loaf would be a more apt description of the dish
Another worthwhile dish is Singkawang chicken curry
The dish features bone-in pieces of ultra tender chicken
along with large chunks of potatoes in a savory yellow curry broth
shrimp is an extremely common ingredient in many Indonesian dishes
so anyone with shellfish allergies should read the menu extra closely
be extremely careful about their choices and be sure ask their server as well
The remaining entrees should be familiar to those who have visited other Indonesian or Malaysian restaurants
the owner tells Eater that nasi campur and jump mien are the most representative dishes
The former is a meat and rice plate which again shows the Chinese char siu influence
while the latter is a bowl of egg noodles topped with shrimp
pork (both crispy and seasoned) and fish balls
There’s also laksa (noodles in a coconut curry broth with shrimp
cah kangkong belacan (stir-fried water spinach/morning glory with fermented shrimp paste and fermented soy beans) and another Hokkien dish
cap cay rice (stir-fried vegetables with shrimp
The owner hopes to add other Kalimantan/Indonesian dishes to the menu in the future
