T HM Sampoerna (Sampoerna/IDX: HMSP) has inaugurated two new hand-rolled kretek cigarette (SKT) manufacturing facilities in Blitar
The inauguration of the two factories is part of Sampoerna's investment in 2024
which previously also included expanding partnerships with five third-party operators (TPOs) owned by local entrpreneurs and/or cooperatives in East Java and Central Java
partners with 43 MPS in various cities/regencies across Java
and overall employs more than 90,000 workers
Investment and Downstream Industry Minister/chairman of the Investment Coordinating Board Rosan Perkasa Roeslani simultaneously inaugurated Sampoerna’s SKT factories located in Blitar and Tegal online from the Sampoerna SKT factory in Surabaya
He expressed his appreciation for Sampoerna's investment
which has also succeeded in employing thousands of additional workers
"Creating quality jobs is the government's top priority
Sampoerna's role has been extraordinary and in line with our program
One thing I see and feel today is the enthusiasm
This means that Sampoerna has done something right in improving the welfare of its employees," he said at the inauguration ceremony held in Surabaya on Dec
"In accordance with President Prabowo Subianto's message
our most important task is to maintain existing investments that employ a large number of workers
we will continue to provide support and facilities so that long-term investors such as Sampoerna can continue to invest and develop their businesses sustainably in Indonesia
especially since Sampoerna exports its products to 30 export destinations in Asia Pacific," added Rosan
"Sampoerna's presence has produced an extraordinary multiplier effect
small and medium enterprises [MSMEs] to local suppliers
I am sure that there are hundreds of thousands of people involved in Sampoerna's business chain
acting governor of East Java Adhy Karyono also expressed his appreciation for Sampoerna's series of investments in 2024
"Congratulations and success to Sampoerna on the opening of two new SKT manufacturing facilities in Blitar and Tegal
This investment will increase employment while improving other economic sectors around the factories
East Java's unemployment rate is at a lower level than nationally
A major contribution is thanks to Sampoerna’s SKT sector
I would like to express my gratitude because Sampoerna has contributed to the East Java provincial administration and is always ready if we need support so that they can also help reduce poverty," he said in his speech
He specifically appreciated the role of thousands of female workers in the SKT sector
"East Java contributes 60 perecent of the country's total tobacco excise revenue
This is all thanks to the hard work of all the female workers here," said Adhy Karyono
"As a company that has been operating for more than 111 years in Indonesia
we are committed to growing together with Indonesia and contributing to the achievement of the 8 percent economic growth target through sustainable investment
Our investment in the labor-intensive SKT sector is one of our efforts to realize this vision," said president director of Sampoerna Ivan Cahyadi
The opening of the two SKT factories and the expansion of partnerships with five new TPOs in 2024 are the realization of Sampoerna's investment plan to increase employment
"Our new SKT factories in Blitar and Tegal will employ more than 3,500 new workers
the majority are SKT employees and are dominated by great women," said Ivan
As a company that started from the SKT sector in 1913
Sampoerna hopes that this investment can strengthen the company's portfolio in this sector
Sampoerna always prioritizes innovation in all lines to maintain business continuity and competitiveness
including in the SKT sector," said Ivan
The SKT production facilities in Blitar and Tegal complement Sampoerna's four existing SKT factories in Surabaya
Ivan said the existence of the Blitar and Tegal SKT factories will create a multiplier effect that can be felt by the surrounding community
This is evidenced by the many businesses that have emerged around the factory
food and beverages stalls and transportation services
we believe this investment will also continue to maintain the production of tobacco and cloves by Indonesian farmers
Hand-rolled cigarettes require twice as much tobacco and cloves as machine-made cigarettes
The factory inaugurated today is expected to have a positive impact on the progress of national downstreaming through the absorption of local raw materials to produce value-added products," said Ivan
Ivan appreciated the government's efforts to maintain a conducive and predictable business and investment climate in Indonesia
including policies that encourage the performance of the labor-intensive SKT sector
these efforts have a direct positive impact on job creation in the formal sector and local economic turnover
which in turn helps improve the national economy
"We are committed to actively playing a role in strengthening the pillars of the national economy
we hope to continue to grow together with Indonesia and contribute to economic development through sustainable investment
employment and added value creation for the society at large," Ivan concluded

Tegel Foods wants to set up a broiler chicken farm
A former Dargaville deputy mayor says a poultry giant should be given the chance to build a massive chicken farm if it consults with the community and mitigates environmental effects.
Tegel Foods wants to set up a broiler chicken farm capable of stocking up to 1.3 million chickens, and locals are keen to know what smell and noise it might generate.
The poultry company wants to buy more than 250 hectares of land at Arapohue, just outside Dargaville, and erect 32 sheds housing the chickens which will be transported to Tegel's processing plant in West Auckland.
The venture is expected to create 28 jobs.
It will certainly be of interest to immediate neighbours, given an operation of that size. I think public consultation is important.
Former Kaipara deputy mayor Richard Alspach had not heard of Tegel's plans but said the proposed chicken farm was a "massive enterprise" and the public needed to be consulted.
Kaipara District Council spokesman Ben Hope said Tegel would like to publicly notify its application for a resource consent and that would happen once Tegel supplied further information to KDC.
Mr Hope said KDC yesterday requested more information on the resource consent application.
He did not specify what more KDC wanted from Tegel.
He said the chicken farm operation was a "discretionary activity".
Mr Alspach said he was not against Tegel's plan but would like the KDC to impose conditions that took issues such as effluent discharges into account.
"Things like impact on roads, discharge to waterways and uptake of water from catchments need to be looked into. When there's a major industry in their area, the community should have a say from an environment point of view.
"If Tegel can do it in a way that mitigates environment effects, they should be given a chance. There will be local benefits in employing 28 people," said Mr Alspach, who has lived on Pukehuia Rd in Arapohue for 45 years.
Another Arapohue resident, Bill Simpkin, was not aware of the proposed chicken farm either.
"It will certainly be of interest to immediate neighbours given an operation of that size."People need to be assured there won't be nuisance in terms of noise and smell so I think public consultation is important."
In its resource consent application, Tegel said each shed would be 20m wide by 130m long and 4.5m high.
Visitors are encouraged to help identify people in the photographs.
Tegal (Petaluma, CA) said it will accept bids for the NLD portfolio—which includes more than 35 U.S. and international patents in the areas of pulsed-chemical vapor deposition (CVD), plasma-enhanced atomic-layer deposition (ALD) and NLD—until 5 pm Pacific Daylight Time on September 30th.
According to Tegal, NLD is a process technology that bridges the gap between high throughput, non-conformal CVD and highly conformal, low throughput atomic layer deposition ALD. Although ALD has proven an effective process technology for applications requiring highly conformal film deposition, the conformality has come at the expense of throughput, according to Tegal.
"Advanced chip designs often require increased process flexibility over the current deposition technologies to achieve performance goals and to maintain broad process windows," said Robert Ditizio, Tegal’s chief technologist, in a statement. "Tegal’s NLD portfolio provides a number of options for extending the life of conventional CVD process hardware without the need to move completely to lower-throughput ALD processes."
In 2009, following a string of losses, Tegal hired Cowen and Co. LLC to explore strategic alternatives for the firm, including its potential sale.
Says Angela Irwin, general manager marketing and communications at Tegel Foods: “We’ve been transitioning our retail products to free range since 2022, with the goal that by 2025 Kiwis can pick up any Tegel product in the supermarket knowing they’re making a choice they can feel good about.”
Says Nick Gallagher, group account director at dentsu: “The free-range category skews towards rolling hills and animal welfare, but we wanted to focus on how freedom makes us feel. Living with freedom isn’t just something we want for ourselves, we want it for animals too.”
During the creative process it was discovered chickens can only bob their heads when they’re free to walk around – and humans also bob their heads when they’re feeling freedom vibes.
dentsu creative directors Brad Stratton and Hayley Marks used this simple insight to form the basis of the campaign: “We loved the fact humans and chickens both bob their heads when they’re feeling free. Dramatising that mutual movement seemed a good way to remind people how good freedom feels.”
The campaign launched 21 April and celebrates the little moments in our day when it feels head-bobbingly good to be free – heading home from work at the end of a long day, heading out to the playground for lunch and leaving home to go to flatting.
More product focused 15”s will rollout throughout the year.
Every time I bob my head along to music, I’m going to think about chicken.
Not sure if that necessarily makes it effective advertising or not, but it’s definitely earwormy and cuts through in a real world household.
It’s like they’re mocking the dead chickens they’re about to eat
Interestingly, any association with animals in a food ad is usually a no go…
Feels really disrespectful to cut that specific line. I understand why it was cut, but it just strikes me as insensitive.
Horrible ad! Enough to drive our family to never eat chicken again!
Cannot stand this ad. The chanting is awful. The head bobbing is almost mocking chickens
I hate this ad and have to turn off the soundtrackinute it starts. The choir of shouting, rather than singing children is unbearable to me.

hurt by a slump in the global market for computer chips
will close its Petaluma manufacturing facility at the end of September
which makes equipment for semiconductor manufacturing
closed most of its global offices and is outsourcing the rest of its production to subcontractors in France and Japan
It has about 20 employees at its Petaluma headquarters
Tegal CEO Tom Mika wouldn't say Monday how many manufacturing jobs will be affected by the restructuring
Tegal will move to smaller quarters in Petaluma
Research and development is being done at its Tegal France subsidiary
"It's been a challenging time for everyone in this industry," he said
Tegal lost $2.5 million on $300,000 in sales during the quarter ended June 30
The company reported revenue of $1.1 million for the same period last year
the company sold part of its product line for $3 million and said it would focus on the manufacturing market for MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) technology
a faster-growing segment of the computer chip market
Tegal could lose its listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange after its share price fell below $1 in June
The company's shares traded for $5 two years ago
but the price dipped below $1 two months ago and hasn't recovered
Tegal shares rose 1 cent Monday to close at 49 cents on the Nasdaq market
Tegal said it was notified by Nasdaq in July that it is not in compliance with the exchange's minimum share price rule
it could get a 180-day grace period after that
The Tegal division was sold to private investors in 1989 and went public in 1995
Tegal sets bid deadline for Nanolayer Deposition patent portfolio
USA says that bids for its intellectual property portfolio for nanolayer deposition (NLD) technology will be accepted until 5pm PDT (pacific daylight time) on 30 September
The firm established the bid deadline after several major IC and semiconductor equipment manufacturers expressed interest in the IP portfolio
The deadline is subject to being extended or withdrawn
Tegal sold its legacy thin-film etch and physical vapor deposition (PVD) product lines to OEM Group Inc of Gilbert
it sold its deep reactive ion etch (DRIE) assets to plasma etch
deposition and thermal processing equipment maker SPP Process Technology Systems Ltd (SPTS) of Newport
Tegal is engaged in the promotion of solar power plant development projects worldwide and other renewable energy projects
Graphic: Tegal’s NLD bridges performance gap in deposition technologies for semiconductor production
Tegal says that NLD process technology bridges the gap between high-throughput
non-conformal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and highly conformal
low-throughput atomic layer deposition (ALD)
The portfolio includes more than 35 US and international patents in the areas of pulsed-CVD
“Advanced chip designs often require increased process flexibility over the current deposition technologies to achieve performance goals and to maintain broad process windows,” says chief technologist Robert Ditizio
“Tegal’s NLD portfolio provides a number of options for extending the life of conventional CVD process hardware without the need to move completely to lower-throughput ALD processes,” he adds
NLD and pulsed-CVD processes have been developed to fill the gap that was created as IC manufacturers moved from conventional CVD to ALD
Although ALD has proven an effective process technology for applications requiring highly conformal film deposition
the conformality has come at the expense of throughput
Conformal film deposition technology is a key component of advanced metallization schemes
through silicon vias (TSVs) and LED manufacturing
but NLD technology also provides unique process capabilities for depositing nanolaminate and composite films without the precursor supply limitations imposed with ALD
The deposition of high-k dielectrics and other complex oxides
and of films of tertiary alloys such as GeSbTe used in phase-change memories for example
can benefit from the process latitude available with NLD
While ALD process developers are sometimes hampered by the need to find reactive saturating precursor combinations for ALD process windows that are closely matched in temperature for each element in a film stack
NLD technology uses plasma treatment steps (in place of paired chemical reactants) to overcome this limitation
allowing for increased process latitude in the fabrication of complex dielectric films and metal alloys
