JAKARTA — German chemical giant BASF and French miner Eramet have pulled out of a multibillion-dollar “green energy” project in Indonesia because of its impact on one of the last Indigenous tribes on Earth living in voluntary isolation
BASF said it would “stop all ongoing evaluation and negotiation activities for the project in Weda Bay.”
The decision came after a sustained campaign by activists voicing concerns that the Sonic Bay refinery
which is essentially an extension of the Weda Bay Nickel project
would increase the risk of Indigenous peoples in the area losing their lands
Weda Bay Nickel’s concession overlaps with rainforest that’s home to hundreds of members of the Forest Tobelo people
according to U.K.-based Indigenous rights NGO Survival International
which has lobbied both BASF and the German authorities to drop out of the project
The Forest Tobelo tribe are among the last Indigenous groups still living in voluntary isolation from the rest of world
They are believed to number between 300 and 500 hunter-gatherer nomadic peoples whose way of life is so intricately tied to the environment that they call themselves O’Hongana Manyawa — the people who live in the forest
any investment in the Sonic Bay project would likely contribute to the ongoing destruction of the Forest Tobelo people’s forests
This could be a reason why BASF and Eramet pulled out of the project, said Pius Ginting, coordinator of the Indonesian NGO Action for Ecology and Emancipation of the People (AEER). BASF’s stated reason is that the supply of battery-grade nickel in the market has eased
and that it therefore doesn’t need to invest so heavily to secure supplies
That would therefore make any German company’s involvement in a project like Sonic Bay that threatens Indigenous peoples a violation of the convention
He also pointed out that WBN had scored poorly in a routine annual assessment of environmental parameters by Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry
it assigns a color code to rate companies’ performance
ranging from gold to green to blue to red to black; a gold or green grade means a company exceeds legal requirements
In 2022, Weda Bay Nickel received a red grade
meaning it failed to operate in accordance with existing environmental and social regulations
“Even if [BASF and Eramet] said the main reason [for their withdrawal] is because of the market and the economy
we see that environmental risks are of course being considered as well due to WBN’s bad PROPER score,” Pius said
He added their abandonment of the project should be a wake-up call for the rest of the battery metals industry and the Indonesian government to improve the environmental
social and governance (ESG) performance of the industry
WBN’s mining operation looks set to continue as the government pushes for Indonesia to become a powerhouse in the production of battery metals
This means the Forest Tobelo people will continue to be at risk of losing their forests
The campaign group recently posted a video showing an uncontacted Forest Tobelo family approaching workers at a mining camp
the family was asking for food after their rainforest was destroyed
It said similar scenes can be prevented by establishing a no-go zone
where no mining or other activities can take place
In a meeting with Survival International representatives
senior Indonesian politician Tamsil Linrung also voiced his support for the protection of the Forest Tobelo people through the establishment of a no-go zone
“We will try to make that region a no-go zone. If not in the near future, perhaps after the next president is sworn into office [in October 2024],” he said
the news that BASF and Eramet are dropping out of the refinery project provides some respite for the Forest Tobelo people
said Survival International director Caroline Pearce
will not be complicit in the Hongana Manyawa’s destruction
are still ripping up the rainforest and the uncontacted Hongana Manyawa simply won’t survive without it
He attributed their withdrawal to a decline in EV sales in Europe as a result of weakening purchasing power
“[The project] is still pending,” he said as quoted by Indonesian news website Tempo.co

prompted Fahmi Lolahi and Fahri Lolahi to return to their hometown
the two of them turned a haunted island into an ecological tourist spot to raise awareness

TEKS The following article was translated using both Microsoft Azure Open AI and Google Translation AI. The original article can be found in Fahmi Lolahi dan Fahri Lolahi, Memupuk Kesadaran dari Pulau Tulang
A large sign that reads “Tobelo City” is planted on the edge of a small island in the middle of the sea
The orange sign contrasts with the blue sea
white sand and trees that cover most of the island's land
The colorful atmosphere welcomes anyone who visits Tulang Island
The vibrant colors became more pronounced upon entering the main gate of the island
A two-story house with walls made of multi-colored bottle constructions stands upright in the middle of it
there was a message written on a black board
nyong deng lady here su has tampa sampa so throw it in her pe tampa.” Attention
that's roughly what it means in Indonesian
In the house where all its walls are made of a stack of used bottles
There's only a large living room with a long table and several wooden chairs
There's also a kitchen equipped with simple coffee-making appliances
there's a small library adjacent to a bedroom
sometimes we do activities together," said Fahri Lolahi when met on Tulang Island
Apart from those who want to have serious discussions
the bottle house on Tulang Island has also become a popular destination for many tourists
ranging from enjoying the sunrise to witnessing the sunset

There are also many who simply want to take a selfie with the background of the house and the island that can be reached by ketinting from the Dufa-Dufa fast boat port in Tobelo
as a protective barrier against destruction
since coastal communities are the most vulnerable party affected by the development in the city," said Fahri
The house made from recycled bottles on Tulang Island was built by Fahri (28) and Fahmi Lolahi (30) in stages since 2020
who have just graduated from Muhammadiyah University of North Maluku in Ternate
were restless seeing the problems that occur in their hometown
The development of the reclamation project at Tobelo Beach by the government in recent years is intensifying
After the completion of the first stage resulting in the inauguration of Tobelo Port by President Joko Widodo in 2016
planning for the second stage of reclamation has begun
Also read: Torianus Kalami, Dedication to Moi Culture
the first stage of the reclamation project not only yields a cargo port claimed to aid economic activities in Eastern Indonesia
Local residents living in the reclamation area also experience unexpected consequences
Starting from the increasingly high tidal floods
fishermen's income has decreased due to the rising operational costs of traveling to the port
and there are many children who drop out of school because their parents who work as fishermen are unable to go to sea anymore
(Note: No forbidden words found in this article.)
The interior of the "bottle house" on Tulang Island in Tobelo
The residents were never asked about the reclamation and its impact
they only received news that the second stage of reclamation will start soon in 2020
but it was hindered by the Covid-19 pandemic
Tulang Island is also included in the plan
Pulau Tulang is now owned by Fahmi and Fahri's father after it was inherited from their grandfather
Pulau Tulang is a historical place for the residents of Tobelo
Also read: Halmahera Waters Polluted by Heavy Metals
When people see Pulau Tulang as a spooky and eerie place
Grandfather Fahri and Fahmi instead diligently collect the bones found there to be buried according to tradition
Warning signs in front of the "bottle house" on Tulang Island in Tobelo
he seeks the blessing of the universe so that those who died there may rest in peace in the afterlife
His hope is that Pulau Tulang will no longer be feared by the local residents
the small island on the edge of the Pacific Ocean is one of the best places to enjoy sunrise and sunset
This spirit was carried forward by Fahri and Fahmi when the development plan almost destroyed Tulang Island
the water area around Tulang Island is also a place where walking sharks live
Also read: The Future of Fish Barns is Threatened
siblings who were once active in a non-governmental environmental organization during their college years have made Pulau Tulang a symbol of resistance
Fahri and Fahmi want to share their concerns about environmental damage with their playmates who still live in Tobelo
they believe that creative methods and persuasive approaches should be used to package the movement
"We package it with creative issues so that children can also join in
do you still want to see sunset or sunrise on Tulang Island
let's reject reclamation together," said Fahri
The invitation conveyed in several meetings
The idea is easier to accept because Fahri and Fahmi have built a reading house community in Tobelo over the past few years
they finally decided to build a structure out of plastic waste
another threat to the sea and residents that has been forgotten amidst the rampant development
"We collected plastic bottles from village to village
then gradually transported them to Tulang Island," said Fahmi
the spirit of collecting used plastic bottles has also spread to various groups of people
There are middle-aged residents who suddenly come to Pulau Tulang to deliver a number of plastic bottles they gather independently
Even elementary and junior high school students have brought bags full of bottles while swimming
12,000 plastic bottles were collected to be used in building a two-story structure
"The 'bottle house' built by siblings Fahmi and Fahri Lolahi on Tulang Island in Tobelo
When the buildings made from plastic bottles began to rise in 2021
Fahri and Fahmi slowly turned them into an ecological tourist destination
but to start sharing awareness of environmental threats to residents on a larger scale
"We do not charge any fees for those who want to come here
but we also allowed payment using used bottles," said Fahmi
Also read: Syamsul Sia, Guardian of the Kawa Sea
the existence of the new version of Tulang Island actually provides income for the locals
there are more than 10 small boats serving crossings from Dufa-Dufa to Tulang Island
these boats only transported people to Komu Island
Several traders also usually entrust their products to Fahri and Fahmi to be sold on Pulau Tulang
"We give all the results directly to the traders
and the earnings can reach Rp 1 million-Rp 2 million per week," said Fahmi
and creativity built on Tulang Island become a distinct attraction for the locals
not only in Tobelo but also in North Maluku
People from various backgrounds start to arrive
especially those who come from North Maluku
The story of the development of a plastic bottle house represents the unity of residents from various backgrounds
they worked together to combat environmental damage in one of the furthest regions of Halmahera Island
"We want to re-establish friendship from there
because among the people there is already a frame in their heads that if Ambon (Maluku) is shaking
The issue at hand pertains to the conflict between citizens in Maluku and North Maluku
which occurred after the fall of the New Order regime
these remnants tend to be exploited by certain parties for their own interests
It is not impossible for the conflict to escalate if there is no continuous push for peace
The fishing boat that can be used to go to Tulang Island in Tobelo
Fahri and Fahmi often invite local children to take part in activities
They come from various backgrounds and are asked to share their interests
which are then carried out together on Tulang Island
we invite our elementary and middle school children to play soccer
and only when the tide recedes do we invite them to pick up trash together
the activities are then continued with discussions on friendship
Also read: Appetizing the East of the Archipelago
the efforts of Fahri and Fahmi to preserve the environment of Tulang Island were not always smooth
they had to face a number of questions from their parents about the future
who had just graduated from college majoring in political science
would not be able to get a job to sustain themselves because of their focus on activism
that's us negotiating at the dining table every day
It took a month to convince my parents," said Fahmi
Heading towards the island of Tulang via a fisherman's boat in Tobelo
Long discussions at the dining table and proof of the movement they built made their parents' hearts melt
who initially insisted on pushing her children to leave the island and find formal employment
instead became one of the biggest contributors to the development of Tulang Island
The support did not end until his death in 2021
the spirit of preserving Pulau Tulang is even stronger in the hearts of Fahri and Fahmi
"The last message from my mother was only one
and that is to not come home with any problems

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The eruption of Mount Dukono on Thursday
2024 was recorded as many as 406 eruptions from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT (Eastern Indonesia Time)
with the height of the ash column reaching 100 to 700 meters
The Dukono Volcano Observation Post (PGA) located in North Halmahera Regency
North Maluku recorded the eruption of the mountain
According to a written statement received in Ternate on Friday
stated that the eruption also emitted white and gray smoke
Mount Dukono is clearly visible even though there is fog with a clarity level of 0-II
The observed crater smoke has weak pressure
and thick intensity reaching a height of between 100 and 700 meters above the crater peak
the surface crater activity of Mount Dukono is covered with 0II fog - clear
thick grayish white smoke with a height of 100 meters - 700 meters of weak smoke pressure leaning to the East," said Sarjan
is one of the active volcanoes in Indonesia with a long history of eruptions that began in 1550
This mountain is known for its volcanic activity that continues to this day
which includes explosive and effusive eruptions
Dukono's volcanic activity also has a significant negative impact on the surrounding area
Reported from the journal Characteristics of Eruptions and Potential Hazards of Mount Dukono
one of the main impacts of the eruption of Mount Dukono is environmental damage
Large eruptions such as those that occurred in 1550 and 1933 produced lava flows and pyroclastic flows that damaged vegetation and wildlife habitats around the mountain
Forest areas that previously served as buffers for local ecosystems often experience deforestation due to high-temperature lava flows
volcanic ash rain can cover large areas up to tens of kilometers from the center of the eruption
polluting the air and covering the surface of the land
This volcanic ash reduces the quality of soil for agriculture because it contains chemical compounds that can poison plants
volcanic ash often disrupts the activities of residents who depend on agricultural land for their livelihoods
Volcanic ash particles inhaled by humans can cause serious health problems
Residents living in the Tobelo and Galela areas
are often exposed to these impacts during an eruption
Other health problems include skin and eye irritation due to direct contact with volcanic ash containing dangerous chemical compounds
This gas can cause damage to the respiratory systems of humans and animals and contribute to the formation of acid rain that damages the environment
the eruption of Mount Dukono is often accompanied by lava flows that flow through the surrounding rivers
This lava is formed from a mixture of volcanic material with rainwater or groundwater
lava flowing northward caused significant damage to agricultural land and local infrastructure
continuous ashfall can accumulate on roofs and cause collapse if the building structure is not strong enough to withstand the load
Disruptions to communication and transportation networks also often occur
isolating some villages from access to emergency assistance
Based on the analysis of the potential hazards of the eruption of Mount Dukono
there are three areas identified as areas prone to volcanic disasters
Several rivers included in KRB I and have the potential to be a route for lava transportation around the slopes and foot of Mount Dukono include the A
To reduce the impact of disasters due to lava
mitigation efforts can be made by building lava flow control infrastructure

Indonesia and Japan Deepen Strategic Alliance in Clean Energy and Infrastructure
Technology group Wärtsilä will supply the generating sets for two Indonesian power plants
The order has been placed by KEPCO E&C
a member of the consortium of KEPCO E&C-Adhi Karya
the consortium to build the plants for the Indonesian state-owned utility PLN
The order has been booked by Wärtsilä in November 2023
The Sumbawa-2 plant located on Sumbawa island and the Tobelo plant on North Maluku will each operate with three Wärtsilä 31DF dual-fuel engines delivering an output of 30 MW
Initially they will be fuelled by mix of 35% biofuel and 65% diesel
in line with Indonesia’s biodiesel programme
They will switch to operate on natural gas when it becomes locally available
The plants will therefore be reducing carbon emissions while providing reliable electricity
and by doing so contribute to the decarbonisation journey of Indonesia
“Having won the public tender for these projects
we needed a partner with the capability to deliver high efficiency and reliable power generation
Wärtsilä’s track record in Indonesia is well established
and the fuel flexibility of the Wärtsilä engines was an important consideration in their selection,” said Il Bae Kim
Executive Senior Vice President at KEPCO E&C
“We are honoured to have been awarded the contract to supply the equipment for these two new power plants
The Wärtsilä 31DF engine has world-class efficiency
and is the perfect choice for these projects where flexibility and reliability are basic essentials,” commented Kari Punnonen
Energy Business Director Australasia at Wärtsilä
The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled to be delivered during 2024 and the two plants are expected to become fully operational in spring 2025
The Wärtsilä 31 engine platform has established a benchmark in operating efficiency. The diesel version was recognised by Guinness World Records as being the world’s most efficient 4-stroke diesel engine
The dual-fuel version ensures operational energy security through fuel flexibility and seamless switching between fuels
reaching full output load in just two minutes
makes the Wärtsilä 31DF ideal for grid balancing in systems integrating energy from renewable sources

The deafening roar of bulldozers ripped through the tranquil forest
scattering birds and shattering the harmony that had defined the O Hongana Manyawa’s home for generations
a viral video captured two men from this nomadic tribe standing defiantly in front of the machines tearing through their land
Their gestures to halt the destruction were ignored
and the roaring engines forced them to retreat
“The mine is getting closer to our village every day
the areas for hunting are becoming further and further away,” laments Mardon ‘Don’ Saolat
his voice tinged with frustration and sorrow
This act of resistance is emblematic of a much larger struggle
a resilient hunter-gatherer community on Halmahera Island in North Maluku
is fighting not just to protect their ancestral land but to preserve their very way of life.
Their story highlights a larger global tension between progress and preservation
challenging the ethics of so-called “sustainable” technology
Halmahera is an island located in the North Maluku province of Indonesia
part of the sprawling archipelago that stretches across Southeast Asia.
Known for its rich biodiversity and lush forests
Halmahera is home to the O Hongana Manyawa
a nomadic hunter-gatherer tribe whose name translates to “people who live in/from the forest,” reflecting their deep connection to the land.
These people live in harmony with their environment
relying on the forest’s resources for sustenance and shelter
Indonesia is one of the largest producers of nickel
a metal essential to the production of electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
Nickel’s importance has surged alongside the global shift toward greener energy sources
as it plays a crucial role in powering electric vehicles and storing renewable energy.
regions like Halmahera have become hotspots for mining and smelting activities
sparking a clash between economic development and the preservation of indigenous cultures
The Indonesian government has heavily promoted mining projects
seeing them as a path to economic growth.
Nickel exploration began after Strand Minerals
a subsidiary of Canada’s Weda Bay Minerals
identified an estimated 90 million dry tons of nickel in several areas of Halmahera
a company established in 1998 through partnerships with the French company Eramet and China’s Tsingshan
now holds a 30-year license covering 120,500 hectares of land
much of it overlapping with the O Hongana Manyawa’s traditional territories
This project is part of Indonesia’s push for downstream processing in mineral industries
leading to the creation of the Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP)
in collaboration with Huayou Cobalt and other local companies
Survival International has consistently warned about the harmful impact of nickel mining on the O Hongana Manyawa
They’ve urged the Indonesian government to protect the tribe’s rights and lands before further damage occurs
but the government has shown little specific concern for their plight
The O Hongana Manyawa’s way of life is deeply traditional
rooted in customs and practices handed down through generations. They balance using forest resources with conservation
constructing houses from wood and dried palm leaves in areas where they can hunt
and gather essentials like firewood and medicinal plants.
“They call them ‘Togutil,’ which means ‘primitive’ or ‘stupid.’ That kind of language erases the dignity and depth of their culture,” explained Roem Topatimasang
an environmental researcher and advocate for indigenous rights
They also possess local wisdom in managing natural resources and maintaining the environmental balance
which means “people who live in/from the forest.” Like the local knowledge of indigenous peoples all around the Earth
they use forest resources while also conserving them
they build bivouac houses with wooden walls and roofs made of dried palm leaves (Borassus flabellifer)
These bivouac houses are constructed in comfortable locations
They still send messages using symbols made from woven materials and use woka leaves (Livistona) to make plates and cups
Economic development has already forced some O Hongana Manyawa to move to villages like Dusun Titipa
one such individual who still relies heavily on the forest for gardening and hunting
said that mining operations and restrictive regulations have made these activities increasingly difficult
Don is a direct descendant of the O Hongana Manyawa and has lived among the Tobelo Luar community in Dusun Titipa
he remains familiar with the customs of the Tobelo Dalam and depends on forest resources for his livelihood
He admits that since the introduction of mining and hauling roads
“Our hunting areas keep moving further away,” he says
frustrated by shrinking spaces allocated for indigenous use
have found themselves navigating hybrid identities
Born in the forest but now living in Dusun Titipa
a group adapting to life outside and beyond the forest
I rely on forest resources for gardening and hunting,” he says
there are the Forest Management Units,” Don continues
Tesla’s 2023 Impact Report brought global attention to Halmahera
advocating for the creation of “no-go zones” to protect indigenous territories from mining activities
the recommendations have received mixed reactions
with the Indonesian government remaining largely noncommittal and mining companies voicing concerns over potential operational constraints
The proposal directly impacts projects like the Weda Bay Nickel mine
which operates on land overlapping the traditional territory of indigenous tribes
raising fears of irreversible environmental damage and displacement
While Tesla does not source nickel directly from Weda Bay
critics argue that its supply chain remains indirectly linked to companies like Tsingshan
and Informed Consent (FPIC) highlights a broader dilemma: how can such consent be obtained from uncontacted tribes like the O Hongana Manyawa
The tension between progress and preservation stands at the heart of this unfolding narrative
challenging the future of “sustainable” technology
no concrete steps have been taken by the mining company towards the indigenous community
The Tobelo Luar indigenous community is also struggling to protect their rights to their customary forest from the pressures of government regulations through Forest Management Units and National Parks.
which often contradict customary practices
Don recounts being detained for farming and collecting wood in restricted areas
a reality many Indigenous people face as they navigate shrinking territories and mounting criminalization
I cut wood into pieces and sell them to cover the costs
but I have already said I am farming here,” said Don
the authorities were still “kind enough” to provide room for negotiation
The criminalization and human rights violations faced by Don are seen as ‘light’ compared to the cases of Bokum and Nuhu
two members of the O Hongana Manyawa who were accused of murder in Waci
These accusations arose amidst a complex regional conflict
Both men were sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2014
He was escorted back to the Ake Jira Forest to reunite with his family by Syaiful Majid
a sociologist from Universitas Muhammadiyah Maluku Utara
direct evidence of their involvement in the murder remains unproven
Samuel Gebe and Alen Baikole were sentenced to 20 years in prison on September 15
by the Soasio District Court in Tidore Kepulauan
The charges stemmed from an attack on mining workers accused of violating sacred forest areas and customary laws
The O Hongana Manyawa have been stigmatized as a dangerous group
which many believe is part of a deliberate effort by authorities or interested parties to justify expanding mining operations into their ancestral lands
This struggle reflects a broader issue faced by Indigenous communities worldwide: navigating the rapid changes and impacts of modern industry
“There’s an old man who doesn’t want to be evicted,” Don recalled
the government now… Back in Soeharto’s era
the [indigenous] community was allowed to farm
but the current leaders don’t want farming and want to evict us again
They say they’ll provide for the community

If you look up the island of Halmahera, you will find that Indonesia boasts of its stunning scenery: unspoiled forests and rugged mountains
Indonesia’s nickel reserves now account for 42.3% of the world’s total reserves
Nickel has become a valuable commodity as it is essential to the production of electric cars
But nickel ore in Indonesia is often found in shallow deposits
which can only be extracted when the existing forests have been cut down
And in these dense forests live the O’Hongana Manyawa indigenous people, or the “People of the forest.” Often referred to as the Tobelo Dalam, they are one of the remaining hunter-gatherer and nomadic tribes in Indonesia today
The tribe has always depended on the dense forests of Halmahera for their livelihood
and even protected them from various activities that threaten ecology because their customs highly respect the forest and its contents
Their existence has been connected to each other for hundreds of years
some four hours from the provincial capital
Sumean Gebe hunts animals in the forest to feed his family
deer and other edible animals,” said Sumean
He also looks for damar resin that he sells to the people in Dodaga Village
“The people who live where nickel is mined” by Garry Lotulung
in the forest near the Kali Meja River with bamboo sticks and machetes
They will process the sago they collect into daily food ingredients
According to data from Survival International, 300 to 500 O’Hongana Manyawa people still reside in the forested interior of the island of Halmahera
The tribes have never had direct contact with people outside the forest
But mining companies have already taken over increasing parts of their forest. The latest research data from the Association of Indigenous Peoples Defenders of Nusantara reports 21 matarumah (lineages) of this tribe inhabit the entire Halmahera mainland
One matarumah usually consists of 4–5 heads of families
Nickel dredging projects in the corners of Halmahera have disrupted their lives
there are at least four mining companies operating within a 50–100 kilometers radius of the forests inhabited by indigenous peoples
This number is likely to increase in the next few years as global demand for nickel continues to increase
the forests in Halmahera will be destroyed,” Sumean said
“The trees will be cut down and the animals will be driven out and die because their homes have been completely cleared
The Indonesian government has tried to resettle people in other hamlets and villages
economy and education built there are often inadequate
it is difficult to adapt to land and houses in a village
“The house is very hot during the day and very cold at night because it uses a zinc roof
It is different from a leaf roof that can adjust to the season,” Sumean said
but maybe they forgot that we also must find our own food every day.”
the indigenous community largely abandoned Dodaga Village
It is now inhabited by immigrants from outside the area
The UK-based nonprofit organization Survival International has said that this concept could provide fixed boundaries for the industrial sector and any mining company so that they do not pass through the living space of indigenous peoples
But until now, the company has not provided any follow-up regarding the development of the concept in the report. Tesla says it uses around 13% of nickel ore from Indonesia and that energy transition is almost impossible without these nickel supplies
they predict that nickel production in Indonesia will continue to increase along with the increasing demand for electric vehicles in the global market
Travel six hours by road from Dodaga Village and the beautiful
green and dense Halmahera plains begin to change shape as the highway reaches the Indonesia Weda Industrial Park (IWIP) located along Weda Bay
coal-fired power plants and nickel smelters stand where the forest once stood
Thick smoke from chimneys billow without pause
This industrial area began operating in 2020 through development carried out by PT Weda Bay Nickel
a joint venture between state-owned company PT Aneka Tambang and Strand Minerals which was initially formed in 1998
is predicted to attract investment worth U.S
The mountainous area on the north side of IWIP has long been known to be rich in nickel reserves. The world’s nickel needs are predicted to increase drastically by 60% by 2040 to meet carbon reduction requirements of the Paris Agreement
While sales of electric vehicles have slowed in the United States and Europe
it is projected that half of all new cars sold in China will be electric
Europe and the United States represent the largest markets for electric vehicles
collectively accounting for approximately 95% of all sales in 2023
The carbon footprint of the nickel smelting in Indonesia could negate much of the carbon reductions the e-cars promise
In addition to the smoke coming out of a total of 12 new coal-fired power plants there
deforestation activities are also clearly visible
queues of trucks carrying materials snake along the road
Dozens of heavy equipment are also digging the hills next to it
This view will be visible up to 10 kilometers away
Geospatial analysis research conducted by Climate Rights International and the AI Climate Initiative at the University of California
Berkeley revealed that nickel mining activities throughout the island of Halmahera have destroyed 5,331 hectares of tropical forest that act as absorbers of greenhouse gases
The industrial area currently employs around 43,000 employees
They are housed in huts built not far from the smelter and power plant chimneys
The huts are built close together with very limited ventilation in each room
garbage is left to pile up in the open space
The grass and plants growing around it are also covered in road dust
The massive deforestation that has taken place
mostly in the upstream areas of large rivers
has increased the risk and frequency of flooding
sending some 1,670 residents into temporary tents
Flood waters completely covered the home of Ahmad Kruwet
a transmigrant from Tegal who now lives in Woe Jarana Village
“I think this is the effect because the forest upstream has been cut down until it is completely gone,” he said
Ahmad added that changes in the quality of the groundwater around his house made it unsafe to use
Since the industrial park started operating
he has had to buy gallons of water to meet his daily drinking water need
also saw a change in the quality of his water
the water in our house was still clean and fresh,” he said “We drank this water
Now he and his family make sure they are prepared for the next flood
They will run to the tent on the hill behind his village where there is a new post set as an initial mitigation site for flood victims
Mining activities and the disasters that occurred also have physical and health consequences
was scratching her feet which looked blistered as result of being submerged in the floodwater for too long
In addition the local health center has been seeing an increase in upper respiratory infections in areas near the industrial areas
because every day almost 40% of patients who come to the health center are workers
Data from Eramet shows that the company plans to mine around 6,000 hectares of the total area of Weda Bay Nickel’s 45,065-hectare concession over a 25-year period
as many as 2,000 hectares of land and forest have been exploited
both for the construction of new smelters and for mining activities
Mining activities in the industrial area and massive deforestation around it have also damaged the ecosystem of agricultural land and plantations owned by residents who live not far from there
Many farmers have experienced crop failures because the plants they planted died or sickened due to declining water and soil quality
Adrian saw coconut and chocolate trees that he had cared for destroyed by the flood
For many years he has maintained a 5.5-hectare plantation planting cocoa
I could even plant bananas and sweet potatoes
Adrian said floods occurred even before the logging and nickel extraction but the puddles of water and sand that rose to the surface of would recede quickly
The mud that now inundates his garden takes longer to recede
“When it is already flooded and muddy like this
the children are also lazy to clean the garden because not much is growing anymore.”
the same situation is also seen on the coast
The expansion carried out by mining companies coupled with the contamination of liquid waste and heavy metals from the ferronickel processing smelter also polluted the estuary
beach and Weda Bay areas where fishermen would catch fish every day
Hernemus Takuling left his fishing boat abandoned on the beach
the waves were too high and fierce and he was reluctant to fish on the beach
a pipe from the smelter was discharging waste into the sea
turning the water around the beach brownish yellow
Hernemus and most fishermen on the coastal villages directly adjacent to the industrial park must travel farther to get better quality fish without exposure to hot water radiation from the waste disposal
I take the closest boat up to four kilometers from the end of the beach because there the condition of the fish caught is much better.”
He leaves every day at 4 AM and returns around 3 PM
he might only get a few fish with an average weight of just one kilogram
“Now I need more time and energy just to catch fish,” he said
I just eat it alone with my family at home.”

The human rights organization Survival International
who shared a video (below) which has since gone viral
declared it was ‘unequivocal proof’ of dangerous and invasive mining activity on Halmahera island
The footage shows two men from the Hongana Manyawa tribe
one of the last nomadic hunter-gatherer tribes of the region
They are filmed from the height of a bulldozer as they make gestures encouraging a presumed logging crew to leave the area
Survival International’s Director Caroline Pearce said: ‘This video documents a human rights catastrophe unfolding
It shows that the logging and mining operations on Halmahera are invading deep into the rainforests of the Hongana Manyawa.’
The charity is concerned that the removal of the forest for the mining of nickel could lead to the ‘potential genocide’ of the tribe.
Vast areas of Indonesian rainforest are set to be deforested under the directives of French
The logging is a part of a billion-dollar project
to transform Indonesia into a powerful nickel exporter for the electric vehicle market
where the material is used to make batteries
a company primarily owned by the French mining company Eramet
has an agreement with the Indonesian government to mine parts of the Halmahera forest
Survival claims this includes a site close to where the footage was shot
Sparsely populated Halmahera is the largest of the Maluku Islands – an isolated archipelago east of Sulawesi
Mining companies have started to exploit its rich deposits of nickel and cobalt in recent years
BASF and the electric car companies which need nickel for their batteries that continued mining in this area will destroy the uncontacted Hongana Manyawa
just as similar projects have destroyed other uncontacted peoples in other parts of the world
it would be an act of stunning and brutal disregard both for international law and for human life.’
But the Hongana Manyawa tribe on Halmahera have made it clear that logging activity is an existential threat to their way of life.
then there will be no more Hongana Manyawa,’ a member of the tribe told the charity.
The approximately 300-500 members of the tribe
whose name translates as ‘people of the forest’
are reliant on the rainforest both culturally and for food and shelter
They set up temporary homes in one area of the forest where they hunt wild boar and deer and harvest sago trees
they have been subject to increasingly aggressive racial abuse and attempts to resettle tribes under the ideology of ‘civilising’ the tribes
Yet in cases where families have been re-homed by the Indonesian government
with contacted Hongana Manyawa people describing it as a ‘plague’ and a ‘prison’
The members are extremely vulnerable to diseases from wider society
making it all the more important that industrial activity stops venturing into their territory
Pearce said: ‘These mining companies should stay out of the Hongana Manyawa’s land
We call upon the Indonesian government to urgently recognise and protect the Hongana Manyawa’s territory.’
Eramet said this: ‘The potential impacts of the mining activity on the Tobelo community have been a constant concern for Weda Bay Nickel
That is why we have been conducting our independent due diligence and have been supported by ethnological specialists to build culturally appropriate relationships with the O’ Hongana Manyawa people within our mining concession
‘We are stunned by what the video is showing
This is not related to WBN mining or exploration activities
We are open to discuss with Survival International to clarify the facts
and make sure that WBN plays an active role to engage in culturally appropriate way with the O’ Hongana Manyawa people.’
the Asia research and advocacy Officer at Survival responded to their comments
saying: ‘The video was taken only around a day’s walk from the WBN concession and it features people directly affected by WBN.’
Eramet claimed ‘there is no evidence suggesting that there would be uncontacted Forest Tobelo living in or around WBN’s concession.’ Yet documents obtained by Geographical indicate that the company has known of the presence of uncontacted tribes in the area since 2012
Russel noted the irony of the danger to the indigenous people
who are famed for their reverence and guardianship of the Indonesian rainforests and are now threatened by an industry-related in most people’s minds to the ‘green transition’
‘We should be supporting the indigenous people who are the guardians of the lungs of the planet such as the Hongana Manyawa
That’s how we need to be protecting biodiversity and protecting the earth from the catastrophic effects of climate change,’ he said
‘We would urge everyone to stand in solidarity with the Hongana Manyawa people.’
Survival International say the public can support the campaign to stop these companies from razing the Halmahera forest by sending letters to the companies involved
Tesla did not respond to a request for comment

Indonesia — Deep in the lush rainforests of Halmahera Island
in the far-flung eastern reaches of Indonesia
lives an indigenous tribe whose way of life is so intricately tied to the environment that it calls itself simply O’Hangana Manyawa — the people who live in the forest
Known to outsiders as the Forest Tobelo people
the tribe believes the forests are home to its ancestors
This is reflected in their semi-nomadic lifestyle
in which they follow the seasons and the animals
hunting and gathering in one area before moving on
They live in an area that measures just 265 square kilometers (102 square miles), according to the Indigenous Peoples Alliance of the Archipelago (AMAN), the main advocacy group for Indonesia’s indigenous tribes, but that area is fast dwindling. In the 1980s, parts of their forest were earmarked for the government’s transmigration program
under which people from densely populated islands
were moved to less populous areas of the country
“Our community forests are being cut down for the transmigration program,” says Madiki
“When the government wanted to launch the transmigration program here
The Forest Tobelo were displaced from their areas
and with no legal recognition of their claims to the land
those who remained have had to face various threats
including illegal logging in their ancestral forest areas
outsiders enter the forest and cut down the trees there
selling them for at least 1 million rupiah per cubic meter
“If we estimate that there are 10 cubic meters
in three to four days around 10 million to 15 million rupiah [$727 to $1,090] is taken from the indigenous land,” Albert Ngingi
“This has been going on for nearly one year
The timber trees that the community plants in their fields are logged.”
A bigger threat comes from industrial expansion
operate in the Forest Tobelo’s ancestral land
according to Munadi Kilkoda from the North Maluku chapter of AMAN
PT Roda Nusantara occupies 695 hectares (1,717 acres) of the Forest Tobelo’s area
while PT Indo Bumi Nikel’s concession overlaps with 11 hectares (27 acres) of the ancestral forest
“Maybe right now the destruction of forests and environmental degradation can’t be seen yet,” Munadi says
it’s a guarantee that the rivers that are still clean now and used by the Forest Tobelo people will be contaminated by mining activity.”
The threat of industrial expansion extends beyond the Forest Tobelo’s territory
More than a third of North Maluku’s total area of nearly 32,000 square kilometers (12,350 square miles) has been allocated for mining leases
as well as four oil palm leases and hundreds of timber concessions
“Many areas are degraded from the extractive activities of mining companies through government-issued licenses.”
And deforestation is picking up in North Maluku
A recent report by environmental watchdog Forest Watch Indonesia (FWI) shows that the province lost 520 square kilometers (200 square miles) of forests per year between 2013 and 2016
Previously neglected regions of eastern Indonesia
such as North Maluku with its relatively large tracts of intact rainforest
are increasingly prone to deforestation as developers look beyond the fast-depleting landscapes of Sumatra and Indonesian Borneo
according to FWI campaigner Agung Ady Setyawan
“This is a warning for us because intact rainforests in east Indonesia are under threat, seeing how there’s a significant increase in the deforestation rate and investment permits that are being issued in areas with large rainforests,” he said in a press statement
the community is fighting back through participatory mapping
a process that acknowledges most indigenous groups’ lack of formal title to the land
When developers submit proposals for a piece of land
something that local communities typically don’t have even if their presence there pre-dates the establishment of the Indonesian republic
groups like the Forest Tobelo are meticulously researching their history
what they believe to be the boundaries of their land
These maps are then submitted for collective approval by the community
AMAN has also developed a monitoring system through which the Forest Tobelo can send text messages to report any illegal activities that threaten them
“We hope that this reporting system will allow the community to directly pass on information about those involved in and supporting these activities
and the type of illegal activities occurring,” Albert said
Armed with the participatory maps and the monitoring system
the Forest Tobelo hope they can defend their right to live in the forests they have called their own for generations
because these are our parents’ heritage,” says a member of the Forest Tobelo

JAKARTA: The Dukono volcano in the eastern part of Indonesia erupted on Wednesday morning
prompting authorities to issue advisories for residents and tourists to avoid activities within a two-kilometre radius of the volcano
residents near the Malupang-Warirang crater in North Halmahera
were cautioned to have masks readily available to mitigate potential respiratory threats
This information was provided by Indonesia’s volcanology agency (PVMBG)
“Periodic eruptions with volcanic ash occur
and the ash’s spread follows the direction and speed of the wind,” the agency said in a statement
Despite a decrease in the frequency of eruptions
PVMBG’s tremor recording data shows signs of magma supply rising to the surface
the volcanic activity level remains at level II or ‘Alert’
According to North Halmahera Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) head Hence Heteria
the eruption of Dukono started on Oct 8 at 8 pm local time
“The eruption has caused volcanic ash rain and has covered four sub-district areas so far,” he said
Four sub-districts exposed to volcanic ash include Tobelo Utara
involving 49 villages and impacting 86,197 residents
He pointed out that the eruption has not significantly impacted the community
distributing masks between 8,000 and 10,000 sheets per day
making it one of the active and frequently erupting volcanoes to date
and has been erupting continuously since 1933
