Malindi Member of Parliament Amina Laura Mnyazi has urged youths in Kilifi County to pursue technical courses to empower themselves economically
Speaking at Weru Technical and Vocational College (TVC) in Jilore Ward within her constituency
after receiving an assortment of welding and fabrication machines worth about Sh13 million from Canada
Ms Mnyazi said technical skills would help solve the problem of unemployment in the area
which she is pushing to be elevated to a national polytechnic
She is also seeking partners to equip the institution and enable it to impart unmatched technical skills to local youth
had embarked on an awareness campaign in Malindi
and Kilifi North constituencies to encourage the youth to join the institution
“These efforts have borne fruit because the institution has been able to increase its student recruitment from 350 in February to more than 1,650,” Ms Mnyazi said
“Our aim is to have this TVC elevated to national polytechnic status.”
She added that the local National Government Constituency Development Fund board would sponsor 150 students to pursue courses of their choice at the institution next year
Weru TVC Principal Julius Kasuva urged school leavers to apply for technical training courses through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to benefit from government scholarships through the new education funding model
He said that apart from offering technical skills to school leavers
the institution had also embarked on a programme of recognition of prior learning (RPL) with a view to issuing certificates to untrained artisans in the area
Langobaya location chief Hesbon Kajimbi said the presence of the TVC in his location had led to a significant reduction in criminal activities as many youths were busy pursuing technical skills

The international real estate advisor says that
while the 2024 regional figure is slightly down year-on-year with 2023 seeing £85.6m transacted

more than double the volume recorded in 2023 and the highest level of activity in the sector since 2018

As part of our ongoing blog series about the One Small Step (OSS) Radio Station Hubs Program, we talked to WERU-FM in Maine—the most rural station in in the 2023 Hubs cohort
Last year WERU was selected as one of five Hubs stations
who helped raise awareness of the initiative and facilitate OSS conversations in their local community
OSS brings two strangers with opposing political beliefs together for a conversation—not to debate politics—but to get to know each other as people.
WERU is a community radio station that broadcasts from the town of Blue Hill
located in the state’s second Congressional district
which is also the country’s second-most rural district
“We were founded in 1988 in a chicken barn called ‘The Hen House,’ where we stayed for nine years before moving to our current location
Paul and Mary was one of our founders.” Today
While Maine’s second district was the only one in New England that voted for Donald Trump in 2020
Murphy says that the district’s political makeup is diverse
He cites Congressman and Democrat Jared Golden who represents the district and notes that while there are significant conservative pockets
portions of the state’s coastal population are more liberal
This mix made Murphy think the program could be successful locally
while fitting the station’s mission of bringing community together and driving impact.
One of the challenges running OSS posed for freelance writer Michele Christle and her fellow facilitator and producer Chris Battaglia
“It was time intensive but it got me out in the community and made me realize how important it is here to build support by word of mouth.” She continues
“[Working on this project] also challenged my own assumptions
I’d find myself talking to a farmer who received a letter signed by a number of community members saying that they were boycotting him because of the political sign in his yard
He wished they would talk to him rather than assuming his beliefs aligned perfectly with the politician in question
Listening to people talk about how incendiary national rhetoric plays out locally
and how we can counter this through connection
“Michele and I thought OSS will only succeed if we can get the whole state involved and as daunting as it sounds
Maine is small enough where it could be a reality.” As a filmmaker and producer
Battaglia also experimented with content to help raise awareness of the initiative
with one of his OSS social media reels garnering 2,000 views.
Asked what they’ve learned from working on OSS
“This project gives me scaffolding to engage with my community in a very different way
It’s so important to look beyond labels and just see each other as people.”

Kanematsu Corporation (hereinafter “Kanematsu”)
(hereinafter “GSX”) have decided to establish the “Nippon Cyber Security Fund 1 Investment Limited Partnership”
the first fund in Japan to specially invest in security companies
(hereinafter “WERU Investment”) as its general partner
Against the backdrop of the spread of DX and the increasing sophistication of cyber attacks
all companies and organizations in Japan are urged to respond to and take countermeasures against such attacks
As the number of companies and organizations targeted by attacks increases each year
and the scope and content of countermeasures continue to change
it is essential for security companies to join forces to face the challenges in order to protect Japanese companies from these threats
a number of security companies have emerged that will continue to grow by offering unique services that utilize AI and other cutting-edge technologies
This fund is "the first fund specializing in the cyber security industry in Japan
in which companies specializing in security invest in security companies," making growth opportunities for the security industry as a whole a reality
and institutional investors in the security industry to participate in the fund
with the goal of establishing a fund with a maximum amount of 10 billion yen
◆Two factors that increase the success rate of portfolio companies
Establishment of an "Advisory Board" consisting of security-specialized LP companies (expert evaluation)
This fund is a specialized cyber security fund in which GSX and other companies specializing in security are investing
an "Advisory Board" consisting of LP companies will be established
which will have the function of research and examination (expert evaluation) of potential portfolio companies based on their industry experience and knowledge of trends
to increase the probability of success in selecting companies in which to invest
Support portfolio companies through mutual cooperation among LP companies (professional support)
Each of the LP companies will share their services
and provide support to the fund's portfolio companies
The growth of the portfolio companies will be accelerated to better ensure their success
◆GP (general partner): WERU Investment's investment track record
Born from a university research group established in 1993
the firm is the first university-fueled independent venture capital firm in Japan
focused on seed and early stage investment in technology startups in Japan and abroad
the firm served as the lead investor and supported the growth of LeoLabs
a leading provider of orbital data of satellites and space debris
which was spun-out from SRI International (formerly the Stanford Research Institute)
one of the world's leading research institutions founded by Stanford University
the firm is currently supporting Confidencial as its lead investor
which is conducting pilot projects with US government agencies
and has experience in supporting cyber security startups
The Nippon Cyber Security Fund will be managed by drawing on the experience of nearly 30 years of domestic and international investment and more than 20 IPOs since the firm’s establishment
■Comments by representatives of the four initiating companies
Amid the constantly increasing importance of security for companies and government agencies
this fund will be established with the objective of contributing to the development of the cyber security industry in our country and inducing innovation in the industry
as international geopolitical risk in Europe and the Pacific Rim has increased significantly in recent years
it is essential to support and adopt high-caliber domestic cyber security technologies
and I hope that the fund’s activities will lead to great dynamism and societal contribution in Japan
Responding to cyber attacks has become an important issue for Japanese companies in recent years
We participated in the formation of this fund as a foothold to develop cyber security solutions for the Group's customer base of approximately 20,000 companies and to evolve the supply chain to a sustainable one
We intend to function as a "solution provider" that transcends the boundaries of a trading company by promoting the formation and development of inter-company alliances among companies in the domestic security industry
The acceleration of DX for the evolution of Japanese companies and the increasing number of cyber attacks and security measures continue to grow in importance
We believe that our participation in Japan's first fund specializing in security will contribute to raising the level of knowledge and human resources in the security industry as a whole
We have high expectations for expanding our community with endorsing companies through the fund and providing comprehensive security managed services
from consulting to security implementation and operation
we have seen many customers who unfortunately suffered damages and were left in trouble with no one (security vendor) to consult with while their business activities were suspended
We security vendors need to stand up for them with "ALL JAPAN"
We have decided to establish this fund with a sense of mission that now is the time to increase the number of our partners and protect domestic companies through mutual cooperation
We are confident that this initiative will contribute to the revitalization and value enhancement of the cyber security industry as a whole

Weru believes the side still made mistakes they must avoid when they face Mwamba in their second match of the season
KCB beat Nondies 45-8 to get off to a perfect start to the season
our defence did well towards the end and there was good game management," Weru said as quoted on the club’s social media handles
"There are still areas that need addressing
We conceded so many attacking penalties which should not happen at this level
"We also conceded a few penalties on defence which were not forced so those are some of the areas we need to work on this week before we take on Mwamba."

The Tobacco Control Act of 2007 promotes research and dissemination of information on the hazardous effects of tobacco production and use
May 8 – The Kenyan tobacco industry has urged the government to review the Tobacco Control Act 2007 to accommodate new tobacco-free alternative products
BAT Kenya’s Scientific Engagement Manager
pointed out that the current law is inadequate to support the application of graphic health warnings on tobacco-free nicotine products
“The current tobacco control act was formulated and enacted and enacted in 2007
because there have been a lot of changes since 2007 to today,” he said
“There are newer reduced-risk products that have come up so the law should be amended to accommodate these new product categories.”
This comes after the Ministry of Health proposed the use of graphic warnings indiscriminately across tobacco products such as cigarettes and tobacco-free oral nicotine products such as vapes and nicotine pouches
the proposed graphic warning signs will potentially mislead the user since they are not factual and do not correlate at all with tobacco-free products
“We are looking at information that does not mislead the user
Some of the images we have seen do not correlate at all with the products…The message coming through from stakeholders in this public participation session
is that the images should correlate to the risk associated with the product,” he added
BAT managing director Crispin Achola said that putting these health warning signs on tobacco-free nicotine products puts them at the same risk as traditional cigarettes and tobacco products
“As an organization we believe that given the nature of the category we are in
regulations have to be put into place to govern how the product is produced
and distributed; so we are on pro regulations,” he stated
