A 94-year-old woman who requires an electric hoist to be moved has been stuck in her bed in north Dublin since power to her home failed on Friday morning
Several nuns aged in their 80s and 90s living in a nearby convent have also been badly affected
About 90 houses in Artane, north Dublin, have been without power since Storm Éowyn took down a nearby tree and power cable
“I’ve been staying with her since Thursday
I’m getting concerned about her now given we don’t really know when power will be restored
The repair date keeps getting moved out,” said the son of the woman
“It’s cold at night and she’s beginning to complain about being in pain
There’s the danger of bed sores developing at this stage,” the man
The pair have been getting some power from a neighbour’s generator which gives some light and heat during the day
there seems to be no support apart from myself
her carers and the neighbours in this time of crisis
the power will be restored soon but we just don’t know,” he said
Nuns living at the Convent of Mercy in Coolock House have also experienced hardship in the storm’s aftermath
We have an elderly community of 11 sisters and we have no power
no heat and no light,” said one 70-year-old nun who wished to remain anonymous
[ ‘It is not acceptable’: Woman confronts Taoiseach over storm repairs after losing freezer of food for third time in 12 monthsOpens in new window ]
Those living at the convent have been collecting hot water in flasks and filling hot water bottles elsewhere to bring it back in the mornings and evenings since they lost power at about 11am on Friday.
“We’re looking at moving one or two people, most are between 80 and 90,” the nun said, adding: “The longest here is here 40 years and she doesn’t remember anything like this. It’s been difficult for us. At the same time we appreciate that it’s been extraordinarily difficult for others as well. In fairness to the ESB they can only do so much.”
The residents of St Brendan’s Avenue and St Brendan’s Drive were initially told by the ESB that power would be restored by Monday night, though this was pushed out to Wednesday night and again to Thursday night.
“By Saturday morning my mother and I were freezing and it got so bad she cried,” said Norma Coughlan, who cares for her 91-year-old mother, Sheila.
Ms Coughlan said she had “no choice” but to book a hotel for two nights and returned home on Monday evening believing the fault would be restored soon after, adding: “At this rate I may have to look for a hotel again.”
A lack of street lighting, meanwhile, also brings safety concerns with nearby resident Ken O’Donnell saying several thefts were attempted in the area around Christmas. “Now you’ve got pitch darkness, no security cameras, no security doorbells and it’s basically open season.”
John Crowley (60), who has lived in his house since he was a child, has never experienced a power outage which has lasted this long. Both he and Mr O’Donnell have been unable to have hot showers since Friday while living off takeaways and charging their phones in their car or at friends’ houses.
Alan Menton, who lives a short distance from the convent, described the past four days as “a nightmare”.
“They only have people coming from other countries now to help out but why weren’t they here last Thursday in preparation for it?”

A new artist venue has opened on the former Stardust site today
Artane Artist Studios are part of the €9 million Space To Create programme funded by Dublin City Council and the Department of Tourism
The 10 new studios were opened by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin
which will allow artists to cover various ranges of art forms
Artane place is the site of the Stardust tragedy where 48 young people lost their lives on Valentines day 1981
Stardust survivor Jim Fitzpatrick said; "It's hard to put into words how one will feel about the old Stardust building
the site on which 48 young people were unlawfully killed on the 14 February 1981
It's a bittersweet moment for most of the families of victims’ and the survivors who will be attending the unveiling and new opening yet it is so lovely to see that there is a new feel and a fresh beginning on the site in Artane Place.”
Space to Create will develop 60 artist workspaces in the capital with funding support of €3M coming from the Dept
€3M from Dublin City Council and €3M from a philanthropic donation (who wishes to remain anonymous at this time)
The other sites earmarked include the Council owned 8 and 9 Merchants Quay which will also undergo a refurb to provide 21 artists workspaces and the former Eden restaurant in Temple Bar which will accommodate 6 artists
while a vacant site on Bridgefoot Street will house 20 new temporary units
DCC leases and manages the buildings helping the artists involved to be able to live
and create their art in their local area at significantly reduced rent

DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL today opened Artane Artist Studios
ten new studios that are at the site of the former Stardust nightclub
On 13 February 1981, 48 young people died when the nightclub caught fire. Many of the exits were chained closed and windows were blocked by iron bars. In April, the jury in the Stardust inquests returned a verdict of unlawful killing for how all 48 victims died in the fire.
the art studios were developed at the site and officially opened today by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin
The programme sees Dublin City Council and the Department of Tourism
Sport and Media identify buildings for refurbishment that will provide artists with turnkey workspaces in the capital
having been appointed to manage the site of the tragedy and the adjoining buildings since 2020
Stardust survivor Jim Fitzpatrick said that “it’s hard to put into words” the feeling of the space being transformed into the refurbished studios
“It’s a bittersweet moment for most of the families of victims and the survivors who will be attending the unveiling and new opening yet it is so lovely to see that there is a new feel and a fresh beginning on the site in Artane Place,” he said
The council said in the development of the studios
ten artists were awarded spaces in the studio in 2022
Cooney said that the recent loss of artists workspaces in Dublin was recognised and a long-term plan is in place to address the shortage
A total of 5% of all new developments in the capital will be allocated to creative
The new artists in the new Artane Artists Studios are; Chris Judge
Theatre artist and Artane Artist Studio resident Caitríona Ní Mhurchú said that on hearing of her being awarded a space in the studios
“my first reaction was what a profound act of generosity it is from the families and survivors of Stardust to allow an artist to create in this space.”
Announced last year by Minister for Culture and Arts Catherine Martin
the programme will develop 60 artist workspaces in the capital with funding support of €9 million: €3 million coming from the Department of Culture and Arts
€3 million from Dublin City Council and €3 million from a philanthropic donation who wishes to remain anonymous
The other sites earmarked include the council owned 8 and 9 Merchants Quay which will also undergo a refurb to provide 21 artists workspaces and the former Eden restaurant in Temple Bar which will accommodate 6 artists
A vacant site on Bridgefoot Street will house 20 new temporary units

Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers
Traffic management may be in place during this time
There may be local diversions in place during the works
Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times
The works may involve some short-term water shut offs and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours notice prior to any planned water shut offs

The weekend of celebration to honour one of Roscommon’s most famous sons will take place on Saturday and Sunday, November 30th and December 1st, in his native Knockcroghery.
Last night, Friday, the Jimmy Murray Statue Memorial Committee formally launched its programme of events in Murray’s Bar, Knockcroghery for the special weekend of celebration.
The weekend will be full of song, reflection and celebration to honour one of Roscommon’s most famous sons.
It will be a special occasion for all Roscommon GAA supporters, the families of the 1943 and 1944 players as well as Knockcroghery parish residents who remember ‘Jamesie’ so fondly.
The centrepiece of the weekend will be the statue unveiling on the afternoon of Sunday, December 1st by GAA President Jarlath Burns.
Representatives from the 32 clubs in Roscommon will be led by members of the famous Artane Band who will parade to the Village Green in advance of the unveiling ceremony.
Guest speakers at the launch event last night included local historian Tony Conboy, memorial committee chairman Thomas Murray, sculptor Mark Feeley and Jimmy’s son, John. Songwriter Johnny Johnson gave a rendition of his song ‘An Ode to Jimmy Murray’. MC for the evening was Matt Rogers.
The statue of Jimmy Murray was carved by local sculptor Mark Feeley from a three and a half tonne block of limestone, which was obtained from Lecarrow.
The committee is very proud of the fact that the limestone that it is carved from has not left the parish on its journey to completion.
The memorial statue will stand proudly on the Village Green in Knockcroghery.
