Rory McClelland cuts quite a dash as he walks around the Ballyfermot suburb he calls home
Rory can be relied upon to look the absolute last word in sartorial elegance
“The best dressed man in Ballyfermot,” he laughs
but most of the people who admire his dapper threads will be unaware of the story of how Rory decided he was always going to be well turned out
That story is now available on Amazon in a memoir called “The Ragamuffin: The Rory McClelland Story.”
Rory is busy organising the official launch of the book
but he was kind enough to sit down with The Echo and spill some of the beans contained therein
Rory was born in 1941 as war was raging around the world and Ireland had taken a few hits from the Luftwaffe
“I’m the second youngest of 23 children and my dad Patsy was a Sergeant in the British Army who fought in the First World War
He ended the war in a prisoner-of-war camp in India.”
Rory was the second youngest in a family of 23 children
“I was born in Lansdowne Valley and when he got home
my dad became Works Manager at the Nugget Shoe Polish factory
All I can remember of that time was the constant smell of the polish and
“We ended up in a place called Connacht Park in Bluebell which was owned by the British Army and available to ex-servicemen and their families
My dad then died tragically young at the age of 48 and with the breadwinner gone
This is where ‘The Ragamuffin’ and Rory’s current dress policy comes from
“I went to a place called Robinhood School for my education and I remember being the only kid there with no shoes
I barely had a stitch of clothing either and I was jeered and mocked mercilessly.”
“I remember I had a friend I used to play with in Connacht Park and his father came out and told him he couldn’t play with me because I was too dirty
He was a stiff Army type and he just said ‘stay away from that ragamuffin.’ It always stuck with me.”
“Then one day my teacher Miss Cooney called me aside and gave me the gift of a grand pair of shoes and a bag full of clothes
It changed my young life and I was so grateful
I vowed I would never be called a ragamuffin again.”
Rory took jobs at a sweet factory and made office furniture for a while until a mate of his told him he was going to Blackpool and why didn’t he come too
at 16 and with two shirts being the sum total of his luggage
the story is one of hardship reminiscent of Orwell’s classic ‘Down and Out in Paris and London.’
He did everything he could to keep himself fed and clothed
he spent half his time getting chased out of Blackpool by the police and sleeping in tram shelters
“At least I could always get a wash in the public bathroom,” he chuckles
Necessity meant Rory got into a few scrapes in Blackpool
I was just a young fella trying to survive.”
Rory McClelland acquired a reputation of being a bit of a rogue
Rory then got a job in The Dorchester in Blackpool – there’s a few amusing and slightly off-colour stories in the book about the showgirls in the hotel and one hilarious aside about meeting Tommy Cooper
Then he followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the British Army
with a story involving his assigned firearm being particularly noteworthy
he came home and fought to get his house in Claddagh Road before becoming a machine operator at CB Packaging in Clondalkin
stood up for himself during an industrial dispute
He eventually left after seven years to take up a job at the docks
“After years at the docks I bought myself a van and decided to work for myself
I traded up to a lorry and eventually started an engineering company which did well.”
He was married with six children but life at home was combustible
The book contains many of the harrowing details
I ask Rory why he wrote the book and he tells me
“I got a reputation as being a bit of a rogue and I wanted people to know who I really am and why my life took the wandering path it did
It was important to me that I told the story
rather than someone on the outside who didn’t know the truth.”
Rory is an engaging and likeable fellow and his story really is fascinating
space does not allow me to divulge more details
The best-dressed man in Ballyfermot will carry on
If you’re around Ballyer and you see an older gentleman in a razor-sharp three-piece and a cravat

UNDER-fire takeaway boss Ken Lam has issued a grovelling apology after the shock closure of his shop
Veteran curry flogger Ken was recently served a closure order as he slugs it out for business alongside his son Jonathan Lam
A war of the takeaways has been raging on Ballyfermot Road in west Dublin since The Irish Sun revealed how newcomer Jonathan started a rival fast-food shop next door to his father’s long-established Chinese following following a family fallout
The 41-year-old set up New Lam’s at 284 Ballyfermot Road — right next door to the original Lam’s at 286 Ballyfermot Road — after being let go from the family firm when he asked his takeaway boss dad Ken for a pay rise
The feuding father and son have been going head-to-head in a face-off dubbed ‘the Succession of Ballyfermot’, with intrigued clients forming bumper queues at the curry houses — and comedians doing TV skits on the dispute
But long-time Chinese takeaway supremo Ken — who has operated the original Lam’s for more than 30 years — recently suffered a blow after being shut down
who blasted the cleanliness at his curry house as “not acceptable”
A HSE inspection also laid bare concerns over ventilation, hygiene, contamination, waste management and pest control procedures.
The FSAI confirmed Ken had been hit with a closure order on February 14, with the order lifted six days later.
Lam's told customers they were closed for a week “due to a ventilation issue and other things”.
Lam’s has issued a fresh statement saying they now want to make amends
They told customers: “We want to take a moment to address the recent temporary closure of our shop and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this caused
“Our shop has been a part of the community in Ballyfermot for over 30 years
and while we take great pride in serving you
we recognise that some aspects of our premises needed updating to meet modern standards
it was highlighted that the level of cleanliness and certain operational practices were not up to the standard we strive for
“We deeply regret this and want to assure you that we take these matters very seriously
we have carried out a deep cleaning of the entire premises
and made necessary improvements to ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations
“We want to emphasise that this was not due to any bizarre or extreme issues
“The closure was primarily related to operational updates and ensuring our practices align with the stricter standards of today.”
Lam's also told punters that owner Ken was struggling “to keep up with the ever-evolving and stricter regulations”
Their statement added: “Running a business of this age comes with its own set of challenges
and while we are doing our best to modernise
we kindly ask for your understanding and patience as we work through these changes
“We are pleased to let you know that we are now fully open and ready to welcome you back
“Your support over the years means the world to us
and we are dedicated to earning your continued trust
Thank you for your understanding and patience during this time
We look forward to serving you again and providing the quality and service you deserve
“We deeply regret this and want to assure you that we take these matters very seriously."
A HSE report released last week by the FSAI confirmed Lam's had been recently shut down
Taking a stinging swipe at cleaning and sanitation at the Chinese
the report said: “The level of cleanliness observed at the time of inspection was not acceptable
“The inspection was expected and the standard was still well below acceptable levels
“The business has demonstrated a lack of concern regarding hygiene for an extended period of time
“The entire kitchen and storage areas need to be cleaned from top to bottom
equipment needs to be cleaned or removed if beyond repair (step ladders
The business has previously been advised to put a cleaning schedule in place that clearly states the frequency of cleaning
“The manager/owner needs to inspect the premises to ensure the hygiene is acceptable at least monthly
Inspectors said they overheard staff moan of freezing conditions in the kitchen
and they found that the ventilation system was “not working effectively”
Food contamination and waste management lapses were also noted
with the HSE telling Ken: “It is not acceptable to store open food directly into cardboard
This will absorb blood and bacteria from raw chicken and paper and other bacterial contamination onto the food
“Food is only to be stored in washable containers
identifiable as either raw or cooked storage
You’re not permitted to store raw chicken wings in previously used chip boxes.”
the report warned: “The void in the ceiling in the back store room is taped up for the issue with pigeons
“This has not been fully investigated with pest control
How the development, which will deliver 418 social homes in Ballyfermot, will look
Work is now continuing on 418 social homes, which will be delivered in Ballyfermot to those on Dublin City Council’s housing list.
The construction of these homes is part of a large-scale 800-apartment development, which will be contained within eight blocks, reaching 13 storeys, on the grounds of the former De La Salle National School on Ballyfermot Road.
The residential units will include a mix of apartments, duplexes, and triplexes, each provided with private balconies, terraces, or gardens.
The available space within the blocks will also accommodate an additional commercial unit, along with retail space or a café.
Each block will feature a community amenity room, with some offering an outdoor terrace.
The existing De La Salle school building, which is a protected structure, will be renovated and repurposed as a crèche with an outdoor play area.
A community hub, corner shop, café, new central park, and amenity areas will be incorporated into the development.
Central areas in the blocks will offer communal spaces, including roof gardens or podium-level open areas. The plan also includes multi-use sports pitches and a fitness running trail.
Welcoming the news of the social homes, Sinn Féin councillor Daithí Doolan said: “This is a hugely positive development for Ballyfermot.
“Over 418 apartments will be delivered for those on the City Council housing list. There will be 1, 2, and 3-bedroom apartments.
“The Iveagh Trust will manage the homes with a permanent office on site. Phase one, which will total 128 apartments, will be ready in March or April.
“The apartments will be allocated under the Choice-Based Lettings process and will be listed online very shortly.
“If you are interested in being considered for one of these homes, I would strongly encourage people to contact Dublin City Council or their local city councillor,” he added.
During the application process, the developers submitted a statement demonstrating how this project aligns with the objectives of the Dublin City Council Development Plan.
This plan, formerly known as the Development Plan 2016-2022 and now updated as the Development Plan 2022-2028, helps determine the location of new schemes and how they will be constructed to ensure the development process is inclusive and beneficial to the citizens it will impact.
By adhering to these guidelines, the developers successfully obtained planning permission for the scheme in 2022.

“The inspiration for the story came from the extraordinary women I grew up with in Ballyfermot whose resilience
intelligence and sense of hope despite the difficulties of the times that we were experiencing in 1970s Ireland left an indelible mark on my life”
their faith and the community,” states Ballyfermot-born actor and screenwriter Jimmy Smallhorne when asked about what inspired the story for his film ‘The Miracle Club’
which will be screened at the Ballyfermot Civic Centre this evening
Jimmy goes on to state that as a filmmaker
he has felt working-class culture and women in particular were rarely depicted on screen with the complexity that he experienced growing up
“Mothers who raised my generation had to be doctors
enforcers and comforters amongst a myriad of roles required to raise families of 8
He fondly remembers highlights of the production
Cathy Bates and Laura Linney recreate the women from Ballyfermot
They met at a hotel to sit down and discuss the characters one day
and he was “deeply touched” at the reverence
respect and thoroughness of their research
Although because of budgetary reasons they couldn’t recreate Ballyfermot in the film and had to create a fictitious street
“ultimately the essence of the women was embedded in the characters that these Academy Award-winning actresses created.”
The next project that he wants to make is a film called the ‘make up party.’ It’s about a group of working-class swimmers having a make-up party where conflicts arise and secrets are revealed
Jimmy would like to thank the neighbours of his street for the inspiration for the film
but this film took over 20 years to get made
and “there were a lot of people who helped to get it done
the actress who was a very early supporter.”

THE Succession of Ballyfermot has taken another dramatic plot twist - after veteran curry flogger Ken Lam was served a closure order as he slugs it out for business alongside his son Jonathan Lam
The 41-year-old set up New Lam’s at 284 Ballyfermot Road - right next door to the original Lam’s at 286 Ballyfermot Road - after being let go from the family firm when he asked his takeaway boss dad Ken for a pay rise
The feuding father and son have been going head-to-head in a face-off dubbed the Succession of Ballyfermot, with intrigued punters forming bumper queues at the curry houses and comedians doing TV skits on the dispute
But as they battle it out for trade, long-time Chinese takeaway supremo Ken - who has operated the original Lam’s for more than 30 years - recently suffered a blow after being shut down
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland yesterday revealed it issued a closure order to the 68-year-old last month after blasting the cleanliness at his curry house as “not acceptable”
An FSAI inspection also laid bare concerns over ventilation, hygiene, contamination, waste management and pest control procedures.
Taking a swipe at cleaning and sanitation at the original Lam’s, the FSAI said: “The level of cleanliness observed at the time of inspection was not acceptable.
“The inspection was expected and the standard was still well below acceptable levels. The business has demonstrated a lack of concern regarding hygiene for an extended period of time, which cannot be tolerated.
“The business has previously been advised to put a cleaning schedule in place that clearly states the frequency of cleaning
“The Manager/ Owner needs to inspect the premises to ensure the hygiene is acceptable at least monthly going forward.”
Inspectors said they overheard staff complaining of freezing conditions in the kitchen
with the FSAI issuing an alert over the uniform provided to workers
The FSAI also found the ventilation system was “not working effectively”
as well as identifying food contamination and waste management lapses
Calling for urgent action to prevent food contamination
food safety officials told Ken: “Raw and cooked food are noted to be stored in containers with no distinction of its use
“Colour coding of containers is commonly used to distinguish between raw and cooked storage and to prevent cross contamination
It is not acceptable to store open food directly into cardboard
Cardboard will absorb blood and bacteria from raw chicken and transfer paper and other bacterial contamination onto the food
“The level of cleanliness observed at the time of inspection was not acceptable."
easily identifiable as either raw or cooked storage
You are not permitted to store raw chicken wings in previously used chip boxes.”
The FSAI further warned “the waste area to the rear of the premises is not being adequately maintained in a clean manner” and the inspection concluded Lam’s was not pest control proof
It said: “The void in the ceiling in the back store room is still taped up for the issue with pigeons
This has not been fully investigated with pest control as previously requested
A documented report is required by pest control ensuring that the issue has been rectified
Adequate procedures are to be in place to control pests
“There are access points for pests throughout the back store room and beside the coldroom (cracked drain top)
The recommendations given by the pest control company have not been completed
Lam’s confirmed to customers they were closed for a week last month “due to a ventilation issue and other things”
When questioned last night by the Irish Sun
Ken insisted his takeaway was back in business after the recent shutdown
They (the FSAI) closed a lot of people’s businesses
When our reporter quizzed Ken further about the issues identified by the FSAI
Firefighter Paw-amedic Carrick with Biscuit
A dad-of-two left homeless after a fire swept through his Dublin house last week has appealed for funds to house his daughter’s beloved support cat
Stefan Gerard Mulhall “lost everything” in the blaze that broke out at his house in Ballyfermot
a breathing apparatus crew with Dublin Fire Brigade’s Dolphin’s Barn branch successfully revived Biscuit the cat who was found unconscious during the call-out
A member of the team used a pet oxygen mask on the animal to revive it
with Dublin Fire Brigade telling their social media followers that Biscuit was “snuggling into its owner” after ten minutes
A budgie and dog were also rescued as firefighters dealt with the blaze
but they thankfully didn't require oxygen therapy
Stefan said he was thankful for the amazing work the fire brigade do on a day to day basis
“Unfortunately I have been left living in homeless accommodation where the cat isn't able to stay,” he explained in a message
“So I have put the cat into a kennels as my daughter is struggling
“(I) don't want her to have to give the cat up for adoption
I have set up a GoFundMe page to try raise the price (to pay for the kennels)”
The ‘Biscuit the survivor’ GoFundMe page has raised €465 so far of a €1,000 target through 23 donations
Stefan explains how his daughter has medical issues and Biscuit is her comfort cat who she “loves to bits”
“And I really don’t want her to lose (Biscuit) over this really bad situation,” Stefan writes
me and my kids’ home burned down while we (were) in the hospital
“But luckily my neighbour heard the smoke alarm and was able to let me know
I got to my house as fast as I could but it was too late
He adds that Biscuit was resuscitated by the fire fighters which at the time “was all that mattered because everything in my house is replaceable”
as they are currently in emergency accommodation and there are no pets allowed he is trying to get some help with housing Biscuit temporarily and with medical bills
I’m actually a bit embarrassed even asking
so I can’t afford it on my own,” he explained
“So any help would be very much appreciated
thank for even taking the time to give this a read or even a share would be so much appreciated

Ballyfermot locals protest over new BusConnects project
Ballyfermot locals have claimed that they don’t see a future for the community as the new BusConnects project has “created isolation” and is a “shambles.”
Members of the community marched to Liffey Valley Shopping Centre’s bus hub earlier today and created a halt to traffic in a bid to “fight for their area”
Locals are unhappy with the planned changes
which includes the removal of the roundabout outside Our Lady of the Assumption Church
The Dublin Bus 79 route has been removed and plans are in place for a new BusConnects service
Locals say they are already suffering and they are expecting more changes as bus routes and times have been changed
Parking is also set to be removed on the Main Street to make room for the new project
Locals believe the impact of these changes in Ballyfermot are significant
and many residents feel the changes will be to the detriment of the community
said the change is going to devastate the community
“We’re here to protest against the NTA plans for the BusConnects route through Ballyfermot
I've been in business in Ballyfermot for 20 years and I haven’t heard anything from the NTA regarding consultations,” he told the Irish Independent
but the NTA have ploughed through these plans that are going to devastate our community
there’ll be no inward development for Ballyfermot
This is going to set Ballyfermot back into the seventies
“The NTA plans to take all of the parking away from the front of it
The shops on that strip rely on parking so you can run in
if they take that away I don’t see a future for us.”
who owns Jackies Florist with his wife on Ballyfermot Road
highlighted that the community will suffer in many ways if the project goes ahead
“The plan at the moment is of no benefit to Ballyfermot
This could most definitely contribute to getting rid of the community
Five-minute journeys will become 20 minutes long
going to schools because they can’t go through the roundabout
“It’ll take between two and a half to four years to complete; all the disruption will be for everyone in Ballyfermot
There’ll be two to six hours of electricity cuts for us
they plan to take away the gardens from 15 families
when we were on street committees trying to deal with corporations
they were like ‘you’re just from Ballyfermot
what do you know?’ They just ignored us because we were from Ballyfermot
we know about our community and we’re going to fight for it
my wife was born and reared in Ballyfermot
Independent councillor for Ballyfermot-Drimnagh Vincent Jackson siad that it’s not just the people of Ballyfermot who will suffer
as he predicts the project will have a knock-on effect in surrounding areas
“The NTA are putting a bus corridor through Ballyfermot without considering the people
All too often these things happen without real consultation
when they get to Ballyfermot and Cherry Orchard
They’re on their way to town so people in Inchicore
Kilmainham and James’ Street all suffer as well
but it needs to provide increased frequencies and an increased level of service
“We believe buses are needed to bring people in and out of the city
we know they need a higher priority than the motorists but what they’re proposing to do is to cut Ballyfermot in two and stop people being able to get around the community where they were able to get around before
If they’re going to the church or the shops
We’re not happy about the proposal to remove the roundabout in Ballyfermot
“People say ‘you know the big roundabout near the church,’ directions are given from there
People in the city would say ‘you know the Spire at the top of O’Connell Street,’ the roundabout is our version of the Spire
“People are not happy with what's being proposed
the sense of security being able to get up and down to the shops
People Before Profit Councillor Hazel de Nortúin added that the NTA needs to consult with the public before going ahead with the plan
“The NTA came in and said this is exactly what you need rather than listening to what people want and how they use their public transport system
leaving elderly people and school children at home unable to access a reliable system
“There’s a lot of what ifs and what’s going to happen
we’ve got to fight tooth and nail for everything we have in Ballyfermot
She said she used to get the bus down to the church and have a ramble in the shops
and it doesn’t show up sometimes on that hour
can’t make that journey and they’re left in their homes
It’s created isolation and that’s the hardest part coming out of Covid.”
A spokesperson for the National Transport Authority (NTA) said: “The Liffey Valley to City Centre Core Bus Corridor Scheme forms part of the major infrastructure element of the overall BusConnects Programme
“It runs from the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre to Dublin City Centre via Ballyfermot
“It will provide significant transport improvements in the form of upgraded bus priority
which will greatly improve both the reliability and journey times for buses along the route
“There is an opportunity for collaboration between the NTA
businesses and residents to develop the final scheme details in a manner that enhances the public realm areas along Ballyfermot Road
“NTA met with a number of local public representatives two weeks ago and has committed to a follow up meeting with key community members
“It is worth noting there were three rounds of non-statutory public consultation conducted during 2019 and 2020
which included engagement in the form of Community Forums
local public information events and meetings with individual residents' groups
“[Planning] consent was received from An Bord Pleanála for the BusConnects project on December 19
“There was a two-month period during which An Bord Pleanála’s decision could be appealed
No such appeals were submitted during this period
“It is expected that the Scheme will bring significant benefits to businesses and residents along the route in the form of much improved bus
CamogieA short story from Dublin and Kilkenny – ‘We appreciate the tradition of the game but skorts are not fit for purpose’It’s the short story that has everyone talking
A new ‘Walk and Talk’ group was created in Ballyfermot by a local man who wants to help the community face struggles together
recalled struggling with mental health issues and addiction since his late 20s
“About 15 years ago I was going through depression and anxiety
drinking became my main thing,” he told The Echo
“I wasn’t happy with myself not being able to function.”
He eventually managed to come out of it and has been keeping away from alcohol for the last ten years
going through bereavement and other issues within the family led him to feel as down as back then
but he decided to react differently this time
He went for a first mind-clearing walk on his own
then started reaching out to people to have a chat and that’s when it clicked
Inspired by other existing Walk and Talk groups across Dublin
he decided to spread the word and start his own
“But you don’t have to be in your mind all the time
“That’s why I created this group called ‘Getting together.’ I want to have something there for the community
for people of all ages and struggling with whatever issue to come out and get to know other people.”
Daniel welcomes people from Ballyfermot but also from Chapelizod
Kilmainham and all the surrounding areas to come join him
‘Getting together’ walks are on Mondays and Fridays starting at 5:30pm from the main entrance of Ballyfermot Sports Complex (BLCO)
From the close-by GAA clubs’ fields and through the park up to California Hills
participants will easily walk 5 kilometres ending back at the meeting point
“There is no pressure for anyone to open up
it could take a few weeks before you feel comfortable enough,” said Daniel
“It’s just people getting to know each other and we’ll take it from there.”

TIMES have become increasingly tough in an age of inflation and rising costs
so much so that a local woman woke up one morning and decided to do something about it in her community
Just before Christmas Charlene Irvine set up ‘Ballyfermot Buddies’ a group for local people “to get out of their houses and not feel they have nowhere to turn.”
Essentially it is a social group that enjoys chats over a tea or coffee in Yangtze at Grange Cross three times a week – Tuesdays at 11am and on Wednesday and Fridays at 6pm
The group also organises trips out for people who may be struggling and have already had a few fun outings with more in the pipeline
There seems to be someone new every week,” said Charlene
“We invite those on low incomes who feel they can’t get out because they’ve no money
The group raises money for outings via local donations from locals
“Before Christmas we went to the cinema and had a meal
We as a group put money together to be able to do this,” explained Charlene
“We went to a murder mystery in Dublin’s Wax Museum last week
We go on days out keeping the cost as low as possible
We went to the dogs in Shelbourne Park on February 1
I’m trying to get the word out to let the residents of Ballyfermot know we are here
“We have been using Spot-a-Balls and will be doing bag-packing in the hopes of raising money for those who feel they can’t afford to be there
‘No questions are asked as to who paid and who didn’t
If we could get any help or donations from any local businesses that would be brilliant.”
Neville Thompson’s 1997 book “Jackie Loves Johnser OK?” has been remade into the new €35.7 million Gilles Lellouche film “L’Amour Ouf”
When Neville Thompson was growing up in Ballyfermot
sitting outside his new-ish home in southern Spain
“I knew a few guys who played on the football team
via a WhatsApp video call on what was (for him) a sun-drenched Friday afternoon
“I remember one of them was killed in a crime incident
and the papers at the time called him a scumbag and a this and a that
that he came up every week and played football
That insight into the complexity – or at least duality – that people can contain fed into Thompson’s 1997 book Jackie Loves Johnser OK?
“In my recollection, it was very popular in the north inner-city,” says Karl Parkinson, author of The Blocks
“A lot of people who wouldn’t normally read books were reading it.”
Lucille Redmond’s review said the opening chapters “are beautifully written
each one a jewel-like scene of Dublin life and impoverished adolescence”
“Jackie is a heart-rendingly loveable hero
a convincingly decent poor eejit,” Redmond wrote
Films of each one followed a couple years after the book
So maybe publishers were out looking for the next Roddy Doyle
one of the authors they found at that time was Thompson
He was picked up by Poolbeg – he mentions former editor Kate Cruise O’Brien – and they published Jackie Loves Johnser OK
“My mother was telling everyone that they thought I was a layabout but I was now an author,” Thompson says
but after Thompson gave his mother a copy of the book
I am after searching every where and I can’t find all these children I am supposed to have… 2
So I don’t clean dishes do I not you ungrateful ******** and 3
Oh your father went around with his flute hanging out did he?” Thompson says
“So I rang and explained it was fiction … and she says
‘You know that I know that but do the neighbours?’ … and she wouldn’t talk to me for 6 months,” he says
Thompson says he rang up pretending to be from the council
saying they wanted to put up a blue plaque to honour local author Neville Thompson
‘I am not having that **** name on my house.’ I said
‘Oh it’s a corpo house we are just wondering can we use your electricity for the drill,’” he recalls
does not paint a very flattering picture of Ballyfermot
it’s important that they have voices from within
He followed that book up with Two Birds/One Stoned (1998) and Have Ye No Homes To Go To (1999)
Thompson is mentioned several times in Michael Pierse’s 2016 book Writing Ireland’s Working Class: Dublin After O’Casey
But his name and work haven’t had the same staying power as some other authors
he felt his work was ignored by Irish publishers
so maybe I could do it too,” says Parkinson who lived in the Ballymun towers when he was small
Maybe Thompson’s work didn’t get the respect it deserved
Maybe “if he were from a different background
and his books were about middle-class people” they would be better remembered
Or maybe the reason is that people consider it “popular” fiction rather than “literary” fiction
But the film rights to Jackie Loves Johnser OK
without any further involvement from Thompson
the film has suddenly burst into the world
the film has a different name – L’Amour Ouf or Beating Hearts – and the action has been transplanted from Ballyfermot to the north-east of France
Gilles’s reason behind that which I could take on board was the fact that my influence would be from Ireland and he was writing from a French perspective,” Thompson says
but I think the body is totally different,” he says
The critics at Cannes didn’t like it much
he decided to go to a planned premiere in Paris
He says his wife told him he’d have to buy a suit
he had one from when his mother had died 12 years earlier
Then he gets the official invite to the event
He says maybe it’s a good thing it’s taken so many years before this kind of success came his way
because maybe earlier I would have pissed into the wind,” he says

The roundabout at the Church of the Assumption in Ballyfermot will be impacted by the Bus Connects project
Fr Adrian Egan said BusConnects will take away part of the heritage and the history of Ballyfermot
Amy DonohoeWed 2 Oct 2024 at 11:36A local parish priest says “part of the identity of Ballyfermot is being taken away” by the BusConnects project
says the community is unhappy with the planned changes as they’re getting rid of the roundabout outside Our Lady of the Assumption Church
He believes the impact of these changes in Ballyfermot is very significant
“If you ask anyone where in Dublin is Ballyfermot
It’s one of the characteristics that gives Ballyfermot its identity,” Fr Egan said
It’s a major feature of how people describe Ballyfermot and talk about it
It’s just part of the geography and of the heritage of the place
“There’s a huge concern among a lot of people
I’m part of a group that have issues with some aspects of the plan
“The identity of Ballyfermot is being taken away and people feel very strongly about that
My house is outside the church on the roundabout there
Fr Egan submitted formal objections to the removal of the roundabout in front of the church
and to the compulsory purchase order of the area immediately in front of the main gates
He explained that both objections were turned down in the initial process and in the subsequent appeal process
and all the planning permissions required by the NTA have now been granted
But as the impact of the changes became clear
he says more and more residents and businesses began raising their opposition
There’s major traffic going through it every day
yet rarely will you see a tail back there,” Fr Egan said
The wider bus network in Dublin is undergoing major changes as part of the BusConnects scheme
“It actually does the job it’s meant to do and to take that away and put a junction there would create all kinds of traffic issues
There are three major primary schools on the roundabout and a secondary school
“Businesses and residents also have major issues around some of the layout of the new route
“Ballyfermot strip is to become one way and that will mean a lot of parking will be taken away from local shops and businesses along there
“It’s going to create dangers on some of the residential streets off the main strip
the traffic will have to detour and go through
increasing traffic levels for kids living and playing there
“We all agree we want to see better bus services and better routes
“But it has to be balanced with the impact on the community as well
We think this is too much and we don’t feel that we’ve been consulted with properly.”
Fr Egan and other members of the community will be marching from the Ballyfermot roundabout at 1pm on Saturday
and making its way to the new bus hub at Liffey Valley Retail Park
“NTA met with a number of local public representatives two weeks ago and have committed to a follow up meeting with key community members
local public information events and meetings with individual residents groups
“There was a two month period during which An Bord Pleanála’s decision could be appealed
“It is expected that the Scheme will bring significant benefits to businesses and residents along the along the route in the form of much improved bus

was delighted to hear the news about one of his customers
“It’s absolutely fantastic to hear that one of our customers has won the top prize of €200,000 on the All Cash Spectacular scratch card
especially with the surprise of discovering the prize was ten times larger than he initially thought

A teenage rapper from Ballyfermot is releasing a song to help inspire young people from disadvantaged areas
wants people around his age to know they can be whatever they want to be when they grow up
He is hoping to encourage his peers to believe in themselves
I started searching the history of hip hop on YouTube,” Josh said
“I got onto my uncle and said I wanted to start doing this type of music
“I always like to put positivity into my raps
and is in his second year at Crumlin College
His latest video was filmed at a number of local spots
including Mary Queen Of Angels Primary School
Cherry Orchard Running Club and The Colloseum Gym
The song was recorded with children from St Ultan’s and St Seton’s schools and it includes Summer Kershaw singing on the chorus
this is a way for Ballyfermot to send a message to the rest of the country to say it’s a community full of talent and won’t be overlooked or given lesser opportunities to succeed
I plan to pursue rapping full time after school,” he said
We featured a few of the classes out of St Ultan’s and St Seton’s
featuring all the businesses around the area
“We went around the whole area and put in as much as we could
“It’s great because it’s such a happy song

The National Learning Network have confirmed that they will soon be opening a new centre on the site of an old secondary school in Ballyfermot - after false rumours were spread online that the site was to host International Protection applicants
The NLN - the education and training division of Rehab Group - provides training courses and specialist support to people who
including people with learning difficulties
There is already an NLN facility in Ballyfermot
But the body recently purchased the site of the old Caritas College girls' secondary school on Drumfinn Road
with ambitious plans to develop a new flagship national campus there with modern
purpose-built classrooms and facilities that can cater for up to 200 students
The project is on track to welcome students to the new campus in September 2025
and has been tendered to contractors Bracegrade
rumours began to spread online last week that the site was to be used to house International Protection applicants after initial works had begun
The NLN quickly moved to quash these rumours after they gained traction with a statement on social media
saying the story is "entirely false"
a dedicated college for education and training purposes only"
The statement, also provided to Dublin Live
reads: "National Learning Network will soon be announcing details of the creation of a new college on Drumfinn Road
Ballyfermot at the site of the old Caritas School
This college will provide vital educational and training opportunities for students with disabilities
or those needing extra support to enter the workforce in the area
"We would like to address and clarify rumours circulating online suggesting the development will operate as an accommodation centre for migrants which are entirely false
a dedicated college for education and training purposes only
"For accurate updates and information

Thank you for your understanding and support."
Caritas College was one of two main secondary schools for girls in Ballyfermot for decades
alongside St Dominic's on Kylemore Road
The two schools were closed in 2022 and amalgamated with St John's College - the main boys' secondary school in the area - on Le Fanu Road
with the new school now known as St Seton's

A Dublin Garda station has re-opened after being closed to the public today, to allow examination of a number of suspect devices.
The Irish Defence Forces were alerted this morning, when a member of the public entered Ballyfermot Garda station with devices found at a nearby location
An army bomb-disposal team responded to the scene and the station was closed as a precaution.
The devices have now been removed for destruction and technical examination.
The area has been declared safe, and the Garda Station is back in operation on Monday night.
