In an important first step toward designation
Dunsink Observatory and Birr Castle Demesne have been added to Ireland’s Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Properties
The announcement that the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) Dunsink Observatory and Birr Castle Demesne have been added to Ireland’s Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Properties came from Minister for Housing
Local Government and Heritage James Browne
today (April 18) to coincide with World Heritage Day
The news will be welcomed by those who have long championed the iconic sites as world heritage material
and was welcomed by Astronomical Observatories of Ireland (AOI)
who said the designation would elevate the observatories to a status comparable to other iconic landmarks already recognised by UNESCO on the island such as Sceilg Mhichíl
and the Giant’s Causeway in Co Antrim
“Securing a place on the Irish Government’s Tentative List for achieving UNESCO World Heritage status is a fantastic recognition of the observatories’ unique
historical heritage and very apt on this World Heritage Day,” said Dr Eucharia Meehan
In September 2023, the AOI partnership had announced aspirations to seek World Heritage status at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding that proposed a cross-border bid between Ireland and the UK to secure international recognition and protection for the sites of the three members of the partnership – Armagh Observatory and Planetarium in Northern Ireland
and Dunsink Observatory and Birr Castle Demesne in the Republic of Ireland
Work will now continue to have the Armagh site added to the UK tentative list
“The scientific heritage of all three sites cannot be overstated,” sad Prof Peter Gallagher
chairperson of Birr Castle Demesne and director of DIAS Dunsink Observatory
“The telescope in Birr Castle was the largest in the world for seven decades and remains today a place of scientific endeavour and significance
We need to protect the heritage of all three sites
preserve as well as educate on the importance of science for society and to inspire the next generation.”
“We look forward to now working with our partners in Birr and Dunsink in seeking designation to the UK’s Tentative List,” said Prof Michael Burton
director of Armagh Observatory and Planetarium
Founded in 1785, DIAS Dunsink Observatory has been home to many of Ireland’s most famous scientists, including Sir William Rowan Hamilton
Birr Castle Demesne began as a private observatory of the 3rd Earl of Rosse
and is famous for the Great Leviathan of Parsonstown
Armagh Observatory and Planetarium is the oldest scientific institution in Northern Ireland and the longest continuously operating astronomical research institute in the UK and Ireland

Melba's Nightclub in Birr is closing its doors for the final time after decades of being a very popular venue for the people of the region
Melba's Nightclub in Birr will soon be closing its doors for the final time as it comes into new ownership
Melba's first opened to the public in the mid 1980s
quickly becoming extremely popular and attracting massive crowds every weekend
Named after a famous Australian opera singer
something to really look forward to after a week of study or work
It was a chance to catch up with friends and relax
it's appropriate that probably the club's penultimate night being an entertainment venue was an '80s “nostalgia” evening on Saturday April 19th
an event which will be in aid of a good cause
the Banagher Shannon Bank Park and the upgrading of the Banagher outdoor pool
The event runs from 8pm to 12am and it's €20 per ticket
“There will be at least two slow sets!” promise the organisers
All the organisers including the DJs are giving their time for free and Dooly's are kindly sponsoring the use of the facilities." Nowadays
the tide of fashion for night clubs has receded
They are nowhere near as popular as they used to be
Clubs in most of the western world have been shutting down due to low demand for well over a decade now; and Ireland has been part of this trend
In Ireland the nightlife infrastructure has been put under massive pressure due to high rents
and licensing laws that are not fit for purpose
According to one survey Ireland now has just 83 regularly active nightclubs
While 2022-2023 offered a glimmer of hope with some reopenings, recent closures have reversed that trend
and even more venues looking like they are on the brink of shutting their doors
The new owners of Dooly's Hotel and Melba's
take over in the first half of May and the Tribune has learned that the plan is to turn the nightclub into hotel rooms
“The current staff in the hotel will be retained,” said the Manager of Canbe
“and we will be using it for spillover wedding business from our other hotel the County Arms.” Before she was world-famous Dame Nellie Melba (1861 to 1931) gave a concert at Dooly’s Hotel
but she also gave an impromptu performance in the square
In her biography she recalled that afterwards
she was out-sung by a red-ribboned local girl in the crowd
this generous gourmande had a number of dishes named after her by the chef Escoffier
Margaret White (Née Brady) Teallach de Faoite, Carrig Village, Birr, Co. Offaly/Tipperary, formerly of Aughafin, Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford.
Sadly missed and forever cherished by her loving husband, Gerry, devoted daughters Geraldine (Nevin) and Jean, her adored grandchildren Gearóid, Croía and Síne, her brothers Philip (Edenderry), Pakie (Edgeworthstown) and sister Mary (Hughes, Killoe), son-in-law Tadhg, sisters-in-law, brother- in-law, nephews, nieces, grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins, neighbours, former colleagues from Ulster Bank and her wide circle of friends.
Reposing at her residence (R42VW96) on Wednesday evening, 9th April from 4pm. to 8pm. Removal to the Church of the Annunciation, Carrig, on Thursday morning at 10.30am. for Funeral Mass at 11am. followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
Green areas on some of Birr's approach roads and cemeteries might look neglected for the next six weeks - but your local representatives want to remind you it is to help mother nature during what botanists and entomologists call 'the hungry season'
The concept of 'No Mow May' is an annual campaign which has boomed in popularity in Ireland in recent years and will see Birr play it's part for the next six weeks to help biodiversity in our area
The 'No Mow May' concept encourages individuals and local authorities to refrain from mowing their lawns during the month of May to support native wildlife
particularly pollinators like bees and butterflies
The goal is to create a more natural environment with wildflowers
offering essential food sources for pollinators at a time when food sources are scarce
Several of Birr's green areas on approach roads
cemeteries and graveyards as well as cemeteries in Shinrone
Kinnitty and Ferbane will participate - but Councillors are concerned about a repeat of previous attempts to take part in 'No Mow May' where local people were not informed about it and began contacting their local representatives to express concerns about why public areas are not being adequately maintained to their usual well manicured condition
"Communication is the key to its success," Cllr
John Leahy told the monthly meeting of Birr's Municipal Council on Monday evening
adding people support the concept when they are aware of it taking place around them
READ NEXT: Bats prevent Midlands housing build until at least September
"Publicity and signage help greatly with this"
Leahy said after the Municipal Council received an update from Brian Keenaghan about what areas will be included in the 'No Mow May' initiative this year
said the lack of communication with the public in previous years was the main issue and saw people contacting their local councillor to ask why some green areas "are being forgotten about"
An artist's impression of the historic courtroom in Birr Courthouse
“Birr Creative Court” is ready to move to its next
a meeting of the community group Birr 20:20 was recently told.Representing the Arts (Creative Court) Pillar of Birr 20:20 Fiona Breen gave everyone an update as to where we currently stand at this stage of this excellent project. For those who didn't know
Fiona reminded the members that the Creative Court will act as an Artists' Hub
“a space for artists to create in.”She added that Offaly County Council carried out repair works a couple of years ago to stop a problem of water ingress in the building (which is the former Courthouse
Last year Birr 20:20 hosted three successful facilitation days for local artists to discuss ideas and get the artists' thoughts on possible ways of using the Courthouse space
These artists may eventually become the people who use the former Courthouse as a place to carry out their creative work
Fiona extended a special thanks to Offaly's Heritage Officer Amanda Pedlow
She added Part 8 Planning Permission has been secured for the physical development of the building
The next step will be the appointment of Consultants by the Council
something which will happen in the near future
“We will be looking at drawing up a robust
sustainable Business Plan with the assistance of the Consultants,” commented Fiona
“and supporting strategies; and we will be examining where we can get funding from
where we will be planning the development and the running of the Creative Court with the advice of the consultants
We will also make the building as green as possible so its running costs are as low as possible.” Fiona thanked Michael Hanna and the other members of the Birr 20:20 Arts Pillar who had invested a lot of time and effort in the project
“I am confident that Birr Creative Court will become a vibrant creative space for artists to work in.” She added that the Council has stipulated that it wants the courtroom to keep its historic appearance
“It is quite a substantial room and it has been suggested that the Courts Service would be welcome to use it again
if they wish.” Gary Hoctor told the 20:20 meeting that he was worried that the rents which will be asked of the participating artists might be too high for them to pay
Gary also pointed out that “funding and grants for the arts are precarious
One year you get them and another year you don't.” He added that art and commerce “aren't always the best bedfellows.” Fiona pointed out that people often underestimate the talent and hard graft which artists invest in their works
She said that the festivals in Birr “are driven by artists to a considerable extent
therefore the artists do bring money into communities
So much of Birr is driven by the arts; but artists will always do way more work than they will ever get paid for.”Gary talked about the three-year Basic Income for the Arts pilot which was launched in September 2022 by Minister Catherine Martin and is set to conclude in August 2025
Nine thousand people applied for the scheme and two thousand artists and arts workers are currently receiving a weekly payment of €325
“A recent RTE programme about the pilot scheme told us that
because of the scheme one artist was able to access important services for the first time in years; that he had been feeling crushed by the cost of living before entering the Pilot Scheme; and because of the Pilot Scheme he was
I would ask local politicians to please keep this vital scheme going and even expand it
open it out to a larger number of artists.”Eimhin Shortt said Cush Wind Farm will provide a community fund of €250,000 per annum to be delivered by a local committee to go towards projects and groups in the area
The Creative Court could be a possible beneficiary
John Carroll congratulated the Birr Creative Court committee “It has been a huge undertaking
The County Council has really stepped up to the mark on this
Wind Farm grants will deliver money to projects such as this.” Gary Hoctor commented that the Trench Trust has committed €150,000 over ten years for the running of an Animation Residency within the Creative Court.Gary added that they have €25,000 to pay a consultant to develop a strategy and approach philanthropic organisations to support festivals
“Mary O'Kennedy Consultants will start later this year.” “I retired from OFFline in October,” continued Gary
Unfortunately Rebecca Kelly is no longer operating the PR for the five festivals in Birr

HISTORIC Dooly's Hotel is in the process of being sold to Birr company Canbe Ltd
the Tribune has learned. The sale marks the end of an era as the Grant family hands over the reins at the hotel after managing it for decades.Eoin Garry
Managing Director of Canbe Ltd confirmed to the Tribune that his company will be the new owners and the sale will be finalised by May 6th.“The current staff in the hotel will be retained,” he commented
“and we will be using it for spillover wedding business from our other hotel the County Arms.”Since early 2024 there had been rumours in the town that Dooly's would be sold and used to accommodate refugees
We are firmly committed to retaining it as a hotel.”Dooly's dates back to 1747
A FANTASTIC new walk is being designed for Birr
which will be a wonderful addition to the town when it opens to the public
told the group's AGM that they made an application recently for a grant for the development of one of the paths following the banks of the River Camcor out into the beautiful countryside surrounding Birr
“There is a rough fisherman's trail there already,” remarked Denis
“but we plan to improve it and signpost it
Our plan is to initially develop three kilometres of the trail following the river
We are thinking of making it part of a much longer walk
whose starting point will be the car park at Marian Hall
walking from Marian Hall to the end of our proposed Camcor Trail will in fact be a total distance of six kilometres
It will be a lovely and interesting trail which will pass by a number of Heritage Sites including Clonoghill Castle in the Syngefield area
“We hope to deliver it by the end of the summer
Eventually we hope to go along the northern bank
“Last year John Feehan also chatted to us about Killaun Bog
a beautiful area of land covering 600 hectares
We hope to create two 5km walks out there in Killaun Bog
We have the bog's landowners' permission in place including Birr Community School
Stage 1 of the Killaun project will be creating the walks; Stage 2 will be planting a significant number of Scots (Irish) Pine
Denis pointed out that the eventual plan is to connect the Camcor River walks to the Killaun Bog walks
“If we could connect the Camcor walks with a trail out to the Killaun Bog Walks you would have a day's outing of about 20 kms and no need for a car to drive out to the bog.” Seán Loughnane pointed out that funding from the Community Benefit Funds being run by Wind Farms such as the Derrinlough Wind Farm could be used to fund projects such as the Camcor / Killaun trails
Denis Shine said creating the Camcor / Killaun trails would give visitors to Birr another activity to do
enticing them to stay perhaps another day in the town
“I actually prefer Killaun Bog to Lough Boora,” he remarked
“because it is wilder.” He added that the material used for the paths would not be hard
the Chairperson told the meeting that the group's finances are in good shape
He thanked the Trench Trust for their invaluable financial assistance
He added that two of the important activities which Birr 20:20 was connected with during the year was the Anaerobic Digester Conference in the County Arms
and cleaning up the old St Brendan's graveyard (which has been closed to the general public for 25 years because it is deemed unsafe
It's planned to reopen the site this year)
He reminded everyone that the group was set up when the Town Councils dissolved about a decade ago and its purpose is to facilitate others
He said the group is divided into Pillars which direct various projects in the community whether it be Sports
“We are well aware that one of our pillars
needs a new site and we have mentioned this to the Council
The Growery is a busy group and is still looking for a new home.” Denis added that 20:20's website has been kept up to date and the group is enjoying a lot more social media traffic
“Our biggest challenge at the moment is we need more people to get involved

“They weren't able to put them up earlier in the night because it had been very busy in the pub.”
Mr Dickson added that three people had been waiting for a taxi to take them home
Judge Andrew Cody said he didn't believe Mr Dickson's version of events

Uisce Éireann has invested €21.5 million in the Tullamore and Birr Water Supply Schemes
which will provide a safe and secure water supply to over 18,000 local residents and businesses
Uisce Éireann has recently completed works to deliver water treatment plants and additional reservoirs for both the Birr and Tullamore Water Supply Schemes
The upgrade will secure the medium term future of the water supplies for 18,000 people in Tullamore & Birr and ensure both towns receive a reliable supply of high quality drinking water
Uisce Éireann is a designated activity company
I farm: “Six acres just outside Birr where I keep sheep
I’m also big into hillwalking and I’m part of Ardara Hillwalking Club based in the Slieve Bloom Mountains
Sheep: “I have 25 ewes and they’re lambing at the minute
It’s so important that they get enough colostrum in the first six hours
people underestimate how much to give a lamb
I also give every lamb a supplement to protect against watery mouth
if it gets in you could lose a lot of lambs.”
Ram: “I bought a Texel ram at a purebred sale in Tullamore last year so he’s still only a youngster
I used to have a Charollais and a Suffolk ram but I found after four years they got narky
The main reason though why I went for the Texel is because they’re more resilient to worms.”
Grass: “I know there’s a lot of farmers short of grass
I watch a lad on YouTube who says he has no grass at all
I have a field below that I have closed to give a rest to and I am hoping to get manure out this week if I can to boost grass growth
I’m giving the ewes a bit of meal to keep the milk in them
Lambs: “I’ll take the lambs to the mart in Roscrea when they’re fit
I find the mart more beneficial when you only have a small few
When you go to the factories they’ll pay you whatever they feel like paying you

Birr k-1 Kickboxing Club recorded super results at the WKO All Ireland light contact Championships held recently at St Brendan's Community School
The Birr club topped the medal table with six national champions
eight silver medals and a fantastic bronze
St Brendan's Community School can lay claim to many past sporting superstars

Ross Buckley and Ordhan Kennedy and Raphael Creamer all claiming Gold medals and becoming national kickboxing champions
With close to 300 fighters in attendance and 40 odd clubs competing
it was a massive day of kickboxing for Offaly and Birr and the rest of Ireland
Birr came out on top and claimed the most golds and silver medals and over all medal count after an action packed day of fights that flowed with a fast and furious pace
Birr now has a few more national Champions in its ranks
Gold medal winners were Ross Buckley (back to back champion)
Bronze medalist: David Delaney (first ever Nationals)
Many of the Birr fighters had to fight three or four times to win a medal
A huge congratulations to all the fighters for putting in the training and a big shout out to Mick Hansbury and Conor O'Brien for all the work in the background
Birr are on top and performed better than last year's All Ireland Championships
In Barber's Jewellers on O'Connell Street were l
TANAISTE Micheál Martin visited Birr on Thursday afternoon to canvass the town
accompanied by election candidate Cllr Tony McCormack
advisers and a small gathering of the local Fianna Fáil faithful. His first port of call was Grant Engineering in Crinkle where he met management and staff and was very impressed by what he saw
The management told him about the benefits to the climate from the technologies being developed and currently on offer from the company. After this the Tánaiste and his entourage drove to Emmet Square where they took to shank's mare and proceeded down Main Street calling into several shops along the way
where he received a mostly warm reaction. In Barber's Jewellers Fermoy connections were alluded to
was a great source of interest and inspired a bit of riffing about Cork and Offaly hurling exploits
Cathal Barber told the Fianna Fáil leader that he is currently engraving the trophy. There was a warm reception for the Tánaiste in Guinan's shoe shop during which he talked about some of the issues which have been raised with him during his canvasses
He said the most common issues include housing and cost of living
“but public transport has also been raised quite a few times with me.”In Haven Pharmacy
owner Liam Butler raised a couple of issues
He said the Irish Pharmacy Association has been looking for talks with the Department of Health for the last decade because the Association is seeking higher fees for Pharmacists across the country
The association is also seeking a free health scheme for Ireland's 170,000 menopausal women. In the Organic Store the Tánaiste bought two bars of organic dark chocolate and in Barber's 21 one of the barbers offered to give him a trim!In SuperValu there was a long chat with a primary school teacher
This young woman pointed out that special needs children are valuable members of our society who are not receiving sufficient supports
She said the parents of special needs children need more respite time
“There is the July provision,” she remarked
This provides respite for hardpressed parents but it's not enough
We need at least four more weeks of respite for parents during each year.”A man and woman spoke to the Tánaiste about the struggles facing SMEs
Costs are going up and small businesses are closing at an alarming rate
Now we are told there's a nationwide plan to increase the minimum wages
and increase the pension rate for employees
This might sound great if you are an employee but it could prove too burdensome for many SMEs.”She also told the Tánaiste that the VAT rate is too high
“It stayed at 13.5% for beauty salons while the rate for hairdressers was reduced to 9%
This is unfair.”Another woman in SuperValu spoke to the Fianna Fáil leader for a relatively long time
She told him she's a member of the Families for Justice group
a group which has “lost loved ones in violent circumstances.” Their assertion is that An Garda Síochána did not investigate the deaths properly and that this meant that the families' “fundamental right to justice has been breached.” The Midland Tribune didn't hear the Tánaiste's replies but he listened respectfully to her for several minutes. After SuperValu the canvass came to an end
Electioneering is a gruelling schedule which requires a good level of physical fitness and mental stamina
The Tánaiste certainly seemed up for the challenge. While the vast majority of people in Birr engaged in an intelligent and decent manner with him
a few were cold and indifferent and one was outright hostile
In one shop an employee wouldn't accept the Fianna Fáil leaflets being handed out and told people that he wouldn't be voting for Fianna Fáil
accused the Tánaiste and his entourage of being “traitors”
The Tánaiste either did not hear the accusation or chose to pay it no heed
The Old Hospital (St Brendan's District Hospital) beside John's Terrace
SIGNIFICANT changes are on the way for the Old Hospital site in Birr (also known as the St Brendan's District Hospital site)
Some exterior improvement work has been carried out to the Old Hospital premises itself (which housed Midoc until 2018
at which stage Midoc was moved to Tullamore)
led some to believe it had been sold by the HSE to new owners
But this is not the case.Cllr Seán Maher told The Midland Tribune that he chatted to Joe Ruane this week about the matter
Joe Ruane is the HSE's Midlands Area Manager and he told the Councillor that the Old (District) Hospital building itself is still in the ownership of the HSE
He said it will probably change ownership in 2027 or 2028
at which stage the County Council will probably take over the building. The Old Hospital building is part of a number of buildings on the general site
located at the end of John's Terrace. The other buildings house a Rehabilitation Counselling service; a Dental Clinic; St Anne's and an Alzheimers service. The ambulance service (NAS) for the town and south Offaly area is located on the site and will be moving to the new Primary Care Centre (PCC) when the currently ongoing building work of the PCC is complete. The expected completion date for the Primary Care Centre is the summer of 2026
It had previously been stated that the PCC would open to the general public in 2024 but
as so often with major infrastructural projects
it's taking considerably longer than expected. When Midoc closed in 2018 there was a very strong reaction against the closure and a huge number of people turned out for a public meeting
expressing their objection at the loss of an essential service
The powers that be paid no heed. There's a possibility that when the ambulance service vacates the site
the Order of Malta might move in in their place. It's been pointed out over the last few years that there are a couple of HSE sites in Birr which have a significant amount of empty
unused space; a far from ideal situation.About half of the Mental Health facility on Wilmer Road (beside the library) is not being used
The Mental Health facility is in fact a very large area which could be used in a purposeful and good way
A couple of years ago former Cllr John Carroll told a meeting that he would “question some of the HSE's use of its property.”The emptiness of the District Hospital is also problematic
and it will become emptier when its ambulance service moves.During a meeting with the Council a member of the HSE gave an update on the Mental Health care system in Birr
She pointed out that there are 16 staff in the Wilmer Road Mental Health facility
The services provided in the Mental Health facility include a Community Mental Health Clinic / Day Hospital / and Day Service
The Day Care at Home Service provides an interim alternative model of care and support to clients and families
It is is a way of delivering a day care experience to clients in their home
while also allowing their family carer to have a break and is based on providing social activity based care with minimum personal care
companionship and recreational activities.Speaking about the future of the National Ambulance Service (NAS) in St Brendan's District Hospital
Joe Ruane pointed out that when the NAS base in Birr is moved to the new PCC in Birr
then it will be moving into “a standalone two story building in the same complex as the PCC.” According to National Ambulance Service Stats
Westmeath and Longford) the average response time for Echo / Delta calls is 25 minutes. There's been a hospital at the John's Terrace site for several decades
Records show that in 1955 tenders were invited by Offaly County Council for an extension of the premises which would be: “An Extension scheme comprising extension of existing hospital
town clinic.” The extension was formally opened in Spring 1959
and the construction cost was £45,000.Part of the Mental Health facility in the old convent site on Wilmer Road has been unused since the late 1970s
The Gaelscoil had hoped to move into the building in 2015 but in January 2024 it moved instead into a modular building constructed on a greenfield site on Tullamore Road.A couple of years ago Cllr John Carroll said the District Hospital and the former Day Care Centre beside John's Terrace “is a significant footprint in the town with a significant amount of physical structures
and everyone should think hard about what to do with the empty sections.” This point by the former Crinkle Councillor remains relevant today
THE DEATH occurred recently of Kevin Purcell of Croghan House
He was the beloved husband of Máire and devoted father of Colm
He was much loved and will be sadly missed by his loving wife and family
Shane and Marty; his adored grandchildren Maura-Anne
Sam and Jess; his great grandchildren Henry and Louise; sisters-in-law Sue
neighbours and friends. His remains reposed at Boyd’s Funeral Home Birr on Wednesday
told the congregation that the Mass was an “appreciation for a life which has made a difference in so many ways
that life is for living and living it as best you can and when you go through the trasna time and beyond you will be rewarded.“It's our faith that those whom we love and lose are not with us but have gone before
“The poet Tagore wrote:'Say not in grief that she is no morebut say in thankfulness that she was.A death is not the extinguishing of a light, but the putting out of the lampbecause the dawn has come.'“Someone talked about the twinkle in Kevin's eye
the youngest child of Florence and Patrick
“Today he will be laid to rest with baby John
the first of his siblings to pass away.“When I think of Kevin I think of the lines in the Seán ÓRíordán poem which begins 'Ag filleadh abhaile' - 'Skipping home from the dance of life.' “Máire told me Kevin was only sick for the last six weeks of his life
not only for livestock but for everything that was beautiful
He loved life and he loved the finer things in life.”Kevin Jnr gave the Eulogy: “Thank you to all who came from far and wide and all the messages; they have been a huge source of comfort
Dad and his three brothers were among the pioneers in livestock exporting
They pioneered the transition from livestock street fairs to the contemporary
Birr Mart opened in June 1965 and on the first day Dad bought his first bullock
It cost £1.”Máire moved to Birr in 1956 to work in the National Bank in Birr
She and Kevin fell in love and they married in 1958 and started a life in Emmet Street
They moved to Croghan House in 1975.Kevin loved travelling and his favourite place was Puerto Pollença in Mallorca
A picture shown to the congregation showed Kevin and Máire in Puerto Pollença
“The picture shows a couple who were delighted in each other's company,” said Fr Tom
continuing - “He adored all his grandchildren and he loved telling them stories.”Kevin Jnr said his father “was a keen horseracing fan and owned a number of racehorses; his favourite was 'Emmet Street'.“Driving around he liked picking up hitchhikers and chatting to them,” continued Kevin Jnr
“One day he picked up an elderly lady laden down with bags
They enjoyed great banter as they drove along
Dad was a bit of a practical joker and he fabricated a bit of a tale for his passenger
When they arrived at her destination she exited the car under the impression that he was the father of 15 plain daughters
“He had a strong sense of propriety and took great pride in his appearance
He was a very sociable man and had friends from all walks of life
there are three ways of doing things - the right way
If you listen you might learn something!“Baby John died in 1932
Dad is the last of his siblings to go to God.”The Presentation of the Gifts included Kevin's hat; his cattle stick; a picture of the racehorse Emmet Street; his prayer book; a picture called “The Man on the Moon”; and a picture of his dog Reilly.Music was provided by soloist John Molloy
organist Enda O'Connor and the Birr church choir
During the Prayers of the Faithful one of the grandchildren prayed “for all doctors
Especially Dr Dara O'Hare and Damian Gormally who showed great kindness and care to Gra Gra.” Another grandchild asked God to look after “Gra Gra's family
and tell him I will mind Reilly his dog for him.” A beautiful poem
written by Kevin and found amongst his effects after his death
was read to the congregation by Bláthnaid Purcell
The mass also included the very beautiful reading from the letter of St Paul to the Philippians: “The Lord is near
Let your tolerance be evident to everyone; the Lord is very near
There is no need to worry; but if there is anything you need
asking God for it with prayer and thanksgiving
which is so much greater than we can understand
Patrick Purcell established Purcell Brothers with his sons Seamus
to export cattle to Britain from Waterford port
Six of the Purcell brothers became cattle exporters
and they cooperated closely even when not formally in partnership
The business flourished until it became an enormous enterprise in the 1980s
It continues to trade strongly to this day

BIRR WOMAN Margaret O'Gorman has been appointed the Chief Executive Officer of an important
environmental company.Margaret has been working for many years as a corporate environmental conservation advisor in the United States
during which time she has garnered an excellent reputation for hard work and the quality of her advice. Before moving to the States she studied Geology and Geophysics for five years in Galway University; and Micropalaeontology for a year in Southampton University
The company she was recently named CEO of is called Tandem Global
non-profit and advisory organisation created through the merger of Wildlife Habitat Council and World Environment Center.Wildlife Habitat Council advised corporations on water stewardship and conservation strategies since 1988
founded in 1974 as part of the United Nations Environment Programme
was more broadly focused on advising companies about sustainable development strategies.Tandem Global advises companies around the world
It focuses on helping businesses integrate their operations with nature and the environment
providing expertise and a network to promote long-term impact
offering strategies and solutions for nature
and certified programs can be found in 47 U.S
The company points out that with over half the world’s total GDP moderately or highly dependent on nature and its services
corporate leaders turn to Tandem Global for “impactful strategies and resilient solutions” that support a better future for nature and business
“Tandem Global offers meaningful private sector value,” said Margaret
including the world’s leading voluntary sustainability standard for corporate conservation actions
we believe there is no greater cause with global consequences than the intersection of business and nature
The formation of Tandem Global through the combination of WHC and WEC and the establishment of our new brand reflect our commitment to working across sectors for the benefit of both business and nature.” She said she has spent nearly two decades working in various disciplines which “activate environmental commitments and practices
it is increasingly clear that together leads to better.”Margaret was previously CEO of Wildlife Habitat Council since 2012
She published a book on corporate approaches to nature and biodiversity in 2020
called “Strategic Corporate Conservation Planning: A Guide to Meaningful Engagement.”Tandem Global has its headquarters in Washington
It also has offices in Europe (as Tandem Global
based in Germany) and Latin America (in El Salvador and Peru)
It operates with a dispersed workforce across all continents
including a half-dozen or so companies that previously worked with both organizations such as pharmaceutical firm Bristol Myers Squibb
chemical company Chemours and building products maker CRH.“During 2025,” said Margaret
“our main priority will be focusing on helping corporations consider how to extend their strategies for water conservation
nature conservation and biodiversity across their supply chains
We will collaborate with other organizations helping companies operationalize conservation strategies such as Business for Nature
Science Based Targets Network and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures
We will position ourselves as the voice of the corporate sector on nature-related issues
We will help companies navigate the narrow route between doing and talking
because that is where they might be punished
we have felt the impact of the Trump administration’s freeze on foreign aid
but I am confident that the Wildlife Habitat Council’s track record of success will help the Tandem Global diversify its funding sources
The first section of the northern Distributor Road which was built some years ago to provide access to Lidl
OFFALY County Council is proposing to create a bypass to ease the terrible traffic congestion which has been afflicting Birr for a long time now and seems to be getting worse
The September meeting of Birr Municipal District was told by the District's Engineer John Mitchell that work on the long-awaited Northern Distributor Road should begin in 2025
The Council had previously been aiming to begin the works in 2023 or 2024
The northern distributor is only 370 metres in length but it will connect the Tullamore Road to the Banagher Road and it should improve the congestion a bit
particularly during the periods when cars are dropping off or collecting pupils from St Brendan's Community School
While some could be forgiven for being sceptical about a 2025 start date for the road
the District Engineer insisted that many hurdles have been cleared and a start date next year is very likely
He also showed the Councillors a map showing the route of the proposed South-Eastern Distributor Road and how this road will connect to the Northern part of the town near the Northern Distributor Road
The South-Eastern will run from the Tesco Roundabout
past the Primary Care Centre until it reaches the Syngefield Road near the Syngefield Industrial Estate
It's then proposed to construct a Bypass running through green fields to the east of the town and swinging around to join the Tullamore Road not far from Lidl
This is the first time such a bypass has been mentioned and if it happens it could be a gamechanger for Birr's significant traffic problem
The Councillors were divided on whether the town should have a bypass or not
One of the councillors pointed out that it could be three or four years before the south-eastern distributor road becomes a reality
Cllr John Leahy was sceptical of the need for a bypass
“There is a bit of traffic congestion on the N52
the main artery through the town,” he said
“but it might be worth just living with it
In Tullamore it's well known that the Bypass there killed a bit of their businesses in the town
We should be conscious of adversely affecting businesses in Birr
I'm a bit concerned about this bypass proposal.”
Cllr John Clendennen said he welcomed the news that the Northern Distributor Road will probably start next year
He said he hopes there's been some contact with the HGV companies assuring them of the positive nature of this new road for them
He also asked the Engineer to provide a realistic timeframe for the bypass
“There is a concern that a bypass can suck the life out of a town,” he remarked
adding that effective communication between the Council and the local community would be essential
Cllr Seán Maher said the flow of traffic is a big problem which many are talking about
I will very much welcome the North Distributor Road when it's built
Can you please give us an exact month at least when the work will start
There's also a safety issue and a difficulty of crossing the N52
I think we need four pedestrian crossings on the N52
“I think the heavy traffic is negatively impacting our image and our tourism industry
I think therefore the South-Eastern Distributor Road and the Bypass are needed
Birr needs to progress tourism and to push for positive growth
it is very difficult to access the town and some people are inclined not to come into the town
We need to strike a balance and we are not achieving it at the moment.”
Cllr Maher added that he also has concerns about a need for new road signage and a need for traffic ramps
He said he is getting calls about both of these issues
Cllr Audrey Hennessy Kennedy said she disagreed with Cllr Leahy about the South Eastern Road and the Bypass
“I understand Cllrs Leahy's point but the situation has become to imbalanced in Birr
If you lived here you would understand that
As it stands it now takes 20 minutes to drive from one end of the town to the other
The congestion used to only happen on Fridays
“I also want the safety improved on the town's roads by constructing traffic ramps
Many people in the town want to see ramps.”
Cllr Clendennen pointed out that the speed problem on the roads throughout Offaly “has gone off the charts
The issue raised at a lot of meetings I go to is speed
Road safety is a big concern for a lot of people
Every county I can think of has partly addressed this by installing speed ramps but in Birr MD and Offaly we have much less speed ramps than any other county in the midlands.”
The Councillor added that a lot of signage in the District needs to be replaced
“For example 12 pieces of signage are missing or damaged from Kinnitty to Birr.”
said the funding isn't in place yet for the construction of the North Distributor Road
“The South-Eastern Distributor Road is only in the very early consultancy stage
It could be three to four years or more before we see that in existence.”
John Mitchell said Birr doesn't have “a huge traffic problem,” but he did concede that there is “a bit of a problem,” adding that 12 to 13,000 vehicles pass through the town each day
He also said he would like to see a “more pedestrian friendly town.”
He said HGV companies such as Banagher Concrete are opposed to road ramps
Pupils in Gaelscoil na Laochra in Birr put on their creative hats once again last week in aid of Dóchas Offaly Cancer Support Service
The fundraiser selected by the school was a Spring/Easter bonnet competition
which resulted in bonnets of all styles and types being paraded around the school hall last week
It was clear from the range of bonnets on display that the artistic talent of students in the Birr school is thriving
The task of choosing winners went to Sandra and Mary from the Dóchas Centre
Pupils and their families donated to Dóchas and the school was delighted to hand over all funds raised on the day
Principal Niamh Uí Chléirigh spoke of how vital it is to build "citizenship skills and social responsibilty in our young people" and added that by hosting charity events in Birr Gaelscoil and inviting organisations such as Dóchas to speak with pupils "they become aware of the vital services places like the Dóchas Centre provide."
The Principal also expressed the hope that the generous contribution from the school will help the Dóchas Centre "in some small way" in the vital services they provide to cancer patients and their families

He added that the magazine is a “precious tradition which will be cherished now and in future generations
both at home and abroad.” The Editor of the Birr Review Team

“All funds raised from the sale of the magazine goes directly back into the local community
have a profound impact on the lives of local people in the year ahead.” Ronan added that this year's publication is marked with a great deal of sadness because Tony Hogan
“Tony's contributions to the magazine were invaluable,” commented Ronan
May he rest in peace.”The Editor thanked the volunteers and contributors for devoting their time and investing their creativity in bringing the magazine to life
He praised their “steadfast commitment” and “extraordinary efforts”
qualities which make the Review “truly special”
The members of the Review team were Paul Barber
Janine Wilson co-ordinated and managed all the content
Michelle in Fox's Life Pharmacy scanned the photographs and Camillus King provided the school photographs. The cover photo is a great shot of the Northern Lights in the nightsky behind John's Hall
which are a grecian temple and a natural phenomenon combining as two impressive expressions of beauty
The picture also reminds us of the unusual frequency of Northern Lights events that occurred during the year; a very rare occurrence becoming considerably more frequent. The magazine opens as usual with a look through many of the news events of the year as reported in The Midland Tribune
This is always a fascinating section as it jogs our memories.Another popular section is the Wedding Anniversary section
including five couples who celebrated their 40th anniversary during the year
and eleven couples who celebrated their 50th.There's a great article by Brian Kennedy about Birr's Marian Hall
which is one of the town's iconic buildings and celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2024.Brian recalls the teenage discos in the Hall and the “fellows playing air guitar at the back of the hall;” and “dancing to the bands of the great showband era”
He speaks about the scouts or guides; Birr Stage Guild performances; the Windsor-Corcoran School of Irish Dancing; Bingo every Friday evening
Tom Hamilton also takes us down memory lane
when he recalls his 45 years working as a postman in Birr
Tom's first postal route started in 1980 and it was in Ferbane
“For my first seven years on the route in Ferbane,” he recalls
“I delivered the post on a bicycle and covered 35 miles every day
I would get a lift over from Birr with Spike Stapleton in his Escort van - which didn't have a passenger seat
so I would resign myself to sitting on the spare wheel in the back
When I finished my rounds in Ferbane and the surrounding areas of Ballylin
I always kept a sandwich in my pocket in case I had trouble getting a lift and had some time - and hunger - to kill

LOETB Birr’s Music Industry and Event Management students are celebrating some major milestones
following the release of their debut single
The single is a lively cover of Olly Murs’ “Dance with Me Tonight"
and has entered the Irish Homegrown Top 20 at an impressive No
The project was inspired by student Dan Daly’s personal connection to the charity
having received a exciting trip to Disneyland
the students released their single on Wish Day
performing under the artist name MTM (Minds That Matter)
suggested "Dance With Me Tonight" due to Olly Murs’ ongoing support of Make-A-Wish internationally
Keeva previously performed with Olly on stage
adding yet another personal touch to the single’s selection
The track was recorded in Studio One at the Button Factory
in collaboration with Sound Training College
and Shane O’Neill joined forces with O’Brien and Murphy to deliver a radio-ready production
The success didn’t stop with the single’s release
The official music video directed by Clare-Ann Nolan is now the most viewed video on the Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board’s official YouTube channel
Capping off the excitement was a celebration concert at Birr Theatre and Arts Centre on Friday
a solo guitar performance by Dan Daly and local artists Lauran Murphy & former LOETB Birr student Finley Wrafter wowed the audience with their talent and teamwork
saying:"Well done to all involved in LOETB Choir Birr
To help track and maximize the single’s reach
Birr Star Records secured a deal with Radio Monitor
This partnership enables the students to analyze airplay data and refine their promotion efforts in real time
Another LOETB Student Aminat Olusesan led the team creating a media database
which when coupled with the Radio Monitor service has resulted in radio play and interviews across a host of stations including Midlands 103FM
“This has been an incredible opportunity for our students to engage directly with industry leaders and gain real-world experience—from working with renowned producers at The Production Suite to partnering with organisations like Radio Monitor,” said John McFadden
Executive Producer for Birr Star Records/LOETB Birr
“Their creativity and commitment truly shone through as they brought everything together from social media to sales drives by Katie Nevin McEvoy
and Andrea Cooke to the celebration concert at Birr Theatre and Arts Centre that was organised by Julija Odina
I mean delivering a live event of that scale was both an exciting challenge and a major achievement
When asked about the future of Birr Star Records
John said: “That will be determined by the motivation and drive of the students
So next year it could be a compilation album of students or local artists that the students are working with across a range of genres
next year will add a different and exciting dimension
who knows maybe another Olly Murs cover or even a collaboration
Centre Manager Enda Kennedy added: “I was blown away by the proposal the students presented last year
They’ve applied every bit of theory they’ve learned to this real-world project and overcame every challenge
Raising funds for Make-A-Wish while launching a professional-level single and hosting a concert is an amazing achievement.”

Birr man John Reddin was the toast of the town this month when he was presented with a special award to mark over 25 years of distinguished service as a driver with local fuel supplier Certa.
Certa, which is part of DCC plc, operates Ireland’s largest network of pay@pump forecourts and home heating depots, including Certa forecourts in Tullamore and Edenderry and a Certa depot in Shinrone.
John is a familiar face to Certa customers having serviced the Birr town area for more than 25 years. He started working with the company in the Birr depot in 1999 when it was known as Three Rivers Oil under the management of Ger Boylan.
Presenting the award, Orla Stevens, Managing Director of Certa, commended Garrett for achieving the milestone of 25 years’ service with Certa and applauded his unstinting commitment to delivering a high standard of customer service during that time.
"John is well known for the excellent service that he provides to Certa customers in Offaly. He is based in the Shinrone depot where he delivers to a loyal customer base. His service over the past 25 years has been exceptional and we are delighted to recognise his great work as a local face of our business," said Ms. Stevens.
"Certa is committed to continually enhancing the service that we offer domestic, commercial and industrial customers and we value the great service that colleagues like John deliver each and every day as we continue to pursue our ambition of becoming Ireland’s most progressive energy company," she said.
I got on well in school, but I never liked it. I was there because I had to be there. When I turned 17, I thought, I want to do something. The head gardener at Birr Castle lived down the road and I said to him: “Is there anything going in the garden? I love gardening.”
He said, we run a student programme, you get a few bob every week. When 12 months were up, they gave me another 12. Tree surgery was what I actually wanted to do, so I did a course in Scotland. I became chargehand at Birr Castle after that. In 2001 they offered me the job as head gardener – I was only in my 20s.
There are more than 4,000 different species of tree here and I got really interested in trying to learn about them all. Back then, Lord Rosse was after going on an expedition to China for wild seed that we were in the middle of growing. I started to get into all of the things his father had collected too.
My interest is in things I can plant that will grow for years. I look back at the things I have planted in the last 34 years and the height of those things now. I get to see what Lord Rosse planted and what his father planted – his father didn’t get to see it grow, but I’m getting to see it. Over the past 10 years, we are seeing more and more of the things planted by Lord Rosse’s father. Lord Rosse is getting to see it and he’s 88.
We started a big Chilean collection 30 years ago, and some of that flowered for the first time last year. One that was planted in 1909 flowered after 90 years. Some of them might never flower. The things I’ve planted, in another 20 years, they’re going to look absolutely stunning. The heartbreak is, I’m probably not going to see it, that’s at the back of my mind the whole time.
When I plant something, I think about who might see it in the future. Someone is going to reap the rewards of it, and I’d say my name will be mentioned. I’ve spent 25 years tackling every tree in every corner of the place. Until then, they wouldn’t have had a lot of maintenance. The older trees date from the 1820s, but there are oak trees here that are 500 years old.
Ninety-nine per cent of gardeners you’ll meet are happy people. I’ve never met a grumpy one
I treat Birr Castle like my own back garden. I spend more time here anyway. I can control the trees, the shrubs and lawns in the 50 hectares (125 acres) of Birr Castle.
When I came here first, we always had what I would consider a summer. Now we have our summer months, but we don’t exactly have our summer weather. Things we planted many moons ago are sitting in wet ground. We are prone to flooding a lot more. We see rivers flooding in the month of June. We would never have seen that before.
The weather has changed big time. The winters are milder. I think that’s why things are staying in leaf for longer. It’s probably the reason why, after all these years, things are starting to flower. We see trees holding their leaves here well into winter. Years ago, there were no leaves to be seen. We see leaves now coming out of things in December; that is totally not normal.
When I took over as head gardener in 2002, I kind of said no the first time I was offered the job. The head gardener used to be dressed in a shirt and tie, that wasn’t going to be me. So we had an agreement that I would remain as a working head gardener. I’m happy when I’m out and I’m going.
I’ll be 34 years here in October and I’ve never missed a day, never been late. I hope to keep that record. I’m still finding plants in the demesne that I never even knew were here. I’ve been walking by them for 30-odd years and yet I have never seen them. You say to yourself: have I not opened my eyes?
I definitely found the right job for me. Ninety-nine per cent of gardeners you’ll meet are happy people. I’ve never met a grumpy one. The outside life is hard, you get cold and wet, but you will be happy. You are in the middle of nature, you are working with people who love the same thing as yourself. If I was to do it all again, would I do it any different? Honestly, no, I wouldn’t. I’m happy in what I do.
