Buncrana Tidy Towns Initiative has warned that the mess being left on the streets overnight will damage the town’s reputation
Buncrana has been named as Donegal’s tidiest town for each of the last three years
but without a road sweeper from Donegal County Council due to cost restraints
a contractor had to be hired in from Letterkenny this morning
who only clean roads and not footpaths.
our main street has suffered a relapse in cleanliness of late,” Buncrana Tidy Towns Initiative posted
Donegal County Council cannot justify the cost
is extremely unfair to all our business owners who pay ever-increasing rates and all our citizens who pay the property tax

“The council managed to get a contractor from Letterkenny to clean the street this morning
it puts our entry to the competition at risk of not achieving the gold medal this year.”
Cllr Joy Beard said that discussions were underway with fellow Inishowen MD councillors Jack Murray and Fionán Bradley to find a solution
saying that the situation in regards the litter is “simply not good enough.”
Buncrana was left in an unacceptable state
and I have been in discussions just a few days ago with Donegal County Council road staff and the incredible Buncrana Tidy Towns team to find a solution and we will continue to do so until we ensure this never happens again
“The Tidy Towns volunteers work tirelessly to keep our town clean
and looking its best and are amazing at what they do
Keeping Buncrana litter-free is not just about pride
it's about respect for our community and for the visitors we are proud to welcome here
I've been contacted by a lot of people due to the mess of the town street this morning
I can't comment on the discussions that have been happening with regard to the street sweeper
have been meeting with the Tidy Towns and our roads staff to try and come up with a resolution
We will continue to work on this.“The Tidy Towns volunteers are fantastic
They take serious pride in their town and have Buncrana looking immaculate
They repeatedly deliver gold medals and are on the verge of winning a national title
They deserve every support that they can get
and with other councillors are committed to doing that
We will find a solution so that this doesn't happen again
our community and our Tidy Towns volunteers deserve that.”

A Buncrana man who “took solace” in cannabis after a difficult time in his life has been banned from driving for one year
entered a guilty plea to a charge of drink-driving when he appeared before Buncrana District Court
A separate Section 4 (1A) charge of drug-driving against the 36-year-old was dropped by the State
Sergeant Emmet Brady explained how the defendant came to Garda attention at Lisfannon

The subsequent MBRS certificate indicated a reading of 97 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood
Mr McManus’ sample also tested positive for cannabis
The court heard how he has four previous convictions
“They’re all very old,” Sgt Brady conceded
solicitor Frank-Aran Murphy said he has known Mr McManus a long time and he explained how he’s come through a difficult period in his life
“Mr McManus is a gentleman I know very well
We went to school together all through primary school and secondary school.”
He was in a relationship with his partner for 18 years and they have three children – but that relationship recently broke down
he made immediate amends and engaged with alcohol and drug services
He attended the local services for addiction and he’s no longer under the influence of any intoxicants
Mr Murphy said his client has rebuilt his life and is back at work
re-engaging in the work that he has done for many years
He’s now a single parent of three and he’s struggling financially with the increased rate of rent in Buncrana; he’s paying €1,000 per month on rent.”
and is having to avail of taxis to go to and from work
He’s not looking for any postponement; he would like to get the ban over and done with.”
The Buncrana solicitor said Mr McManus is remorseful over what happened and keen to move on

Judge Patricia Cronin enquired as to Mr McManus’ earnings
and she was informed that he takes in around €400 per week
“He would like to work full-time but he can’t with the childcare commitments
given the hours that chefs work,” Mr Murphy explained
Judge Cronin said she noted the early guilty plea
the mitigation offered and a letter from community healthcare that was handed in to the court to show the efforts Mr McManus has made to deal with his issues
Judge Cronin then imposed a drink-driving conviction
the mandatory minimum disqualification of one year and a fine of €250
The period of disqualification comes into effect from April 24
The judge also granted legal aid to Mr Murphy

was part of the Buncrana side who enjoyed a big win over Kilcar
Buncrana secured back-to-back wins in Division 1 with a runaway 14-point win over Kilcar at the Scarvey.Having overcome Gaoth Dobhair eight days earlier
Buncrana were determined to build on that result and were more than good value for this win in their first season in the top tier of league football since 1997.With a strong wind blowing in off Lough Swilly on their backs
landing a goal and three two-pointers to build up a 1-9 to 0-1 lead at the break.Conor Doherty got a goal for Kilcar straight from the throw-in at the start of the second half
but a meaningful comeback didn’t materialise
Kilcar struggled to get their kickout past the tall Buncrana centre fielders Peter McLaughlin
and their cause was further hampered when Jack Hegarty was sent to the line after picking up a second yellow card midway through the half

but the side managed by Gary Duffy took a 1-9 to 0-1 lead into half time with Sean Doherty and John Campbell on target late in the half
Conor Doherty’s goal right from the throw-in gave Kilcar a glimmer of hope of making a fist of it in the second period
they held possession for long periods and switched the ball from side to side to open up gaps in the Kilcar rearguard. With their half backs driving forward
Billy Duffy and Aaron Cleary all got on the end of scoring moves and when Jack Hegarty was sent after receiving a second yellow card from referee James Connors
the game was up for Kilcar.Oisin Crawford pointed within a minute of the dismissal and with Kilcar required to keep three forwards in the opposition half their defenders were outnumbered 11 to 10 by Buncrana attackers.John Campbell hit a rare point off his right foot
with Elliot Friel driving forward to get on the scoresheet and substitute Darach O’Connor pointed with his second involvement to stretch Buncrana’s lead to 1-17 to 1-1.Kilcar rallied late on

A proposal to construct a new development on a car park adjacent to an existing building in Buncrana has been denied planning permission
Clare O'Donnell had sought to construct a retail premises and a two-story apartment but the application has been refused after the owner of the neighbouring property did not consent to their gable window being covered up
The proposed development would have been located just off Buncrana Main Street on the Westend beside Westend Dental Surgery
Read next: Plague of flies closes Donegal church ahead of weekend confirmations
An objection was submitted from resident Ann Rebecca (Ruby) McDowell
who felt the application would increase vehicle parking in the vicinity
which is “already overcrowded and under-facilitated”
She further added that it could cause severe access and privacy issues as the development would be built on a car park and it could “simultaneously reduce the area for parking while also increasing the need for car parking”
Another objection was submitted from Maeve Mulholland
who owns the dentist adjacent to the proposed building
which has been in place for over 30 years and the orthodontist was concerned with how “blocking up of this window will interfere with the dental practice's day-to-day operations
as well as interfere with the long-established rights to light of the property”
Another concern for Ms Mulholland was the restriction on deliveries
deliveries and removal of medical waste are done through the rear of the property
She noted that this would be unlikely to continue as it would “make it physically impossible for vans and small lorries to navigate the turn to the rear of the property”
we will be unable to accept oil or deliveries of supplies
More significant would be the inability to dispose of medical waste via a discrete rear access point
forcing us to move the collection of medical waste through the dental surgery and out through the front door
This would be problematic to us in terms of hygiene and acceptable medical best practices.”
Read next: An Post to open new delivery office in BurnfootAs part of the chief fire officer’s report by Joseph McTaggart
it was stated that there was an inadequate means of escape from the top floor of the proposed apartment
The planning authority outlined how planning has been refused as the gable window on the existing end terrace would be blocked should the development be constructed
Consent would therefore be required from the adjoining landowner and assurance that the removal of this window would not impact the dental surgery
it was noted that an objection has been received from the owner of the dental surgery
which mentions the potential loss of the window and impact on the workings of the practice
consent has been denied and permission refused
“Having regard to the fact that consent has been explicitly denied to allow the existing third party gable window to be blocked up
the Planning Authority is not satisfied on the basis of the information submitted that the applicant has sufficient legal interest to carry out works which are essential for the development to proceed,” added the council’s planning section

Buncrana senior hurlers drew with Aodh Ruadh on Friday night
A pointed free into the darkness from Buncrana marksman Caelan O’Neill tied this thrilling SHL encounter in Fr Tierney Park
it was very hard to see the sliotar and both sides are to be commended for seeing matters out.
A draw was probably a fair result but Aodh Ruadh will certainly rue those eight first-half wides when they were in the ascendancy
They also led by 2-9 to 0-11 midway through the second half
and they can mainly thank O’Neill’s accuracy for coming away with a point
Aodh Ruadh played with a slight breeze in the opening half
but it was Buncrana’s tall midfielder Kevin O’Rourke who hit the first point
who was sent off for a second yellow card in the 58th minute
replied with a pointed free to which O’Rourke responded in kind
Cullen then levelled matters after taking a good pass from the outstanding Senan Rooney
That set the pattern for a ding-dong opening half
Aodh Ruadh had chalked up five wides in the opening twelve minutes
Ex-county player Dylan Duffy landed two points on the trot to put his side ahead 0-5 to 0-3
before Aodh Ruadh struck for a well-executed goal
Rooney ran for about 60 metres before finding Cullen
who blasted the sliotar to the roof of the net in the 16th minute
But Aodh Ruadh continued to hit wides as O’Neill levelled matters from a free
That was Buncrana’s last score of the half
as Aodh Ruadh finished strongly with points from Kyle McNulty
leaving them 1-8 to 0-6 ahead at the break
They could have had a second goal in the 24th minute
but Buncrana keeper Tom Clare pulled off a brilliant save from a point-blank effort by Cullen
Buncrana came out like a freight train on the resumption
landing four points in as many minutes - 0-2 from frees by O’Neill
and points from play by O’Rourke and Duffy
Cullen pointed a free to leave Aodh Ruadh ahead 1-9 to 0-10
but the inevitable O’Neill reduced the gap to a single point with another free
Aodh Ruadh veteran Ciaran Kilgannon flicked the ball to the net in a crowded Buncrana goalmouth
and suddenly Ballyshannon were ahead by 2-9 to 0-11 in the 45th minute

Gaoth Dobhair 1-9 Buncrana 0-19
John Campbell was in form for Buncrana at the weekend
Buncrana turned on the style with a power-packed performance to put Gaoth Dobhair to the sword in Magheragallon on Saturday evening.
John Campbell hit eight points in this Division 1 encounter
and three of them two-pointers in the seven-point win in what Buncrana’s first game at the famous west Donegal ground since 1997.
posted 0-6 for the Gary Duffy-managed Inishowen side.
Sean Doherty and Sean Parker were the other Buncrana men to hit the target
Eoin De Burca top-scored for a youthful Gaoth Dobhair who only had a sprinkling of experienced players on board.
De Burca scored a goal and also posted one point
Aodhan Bhreathnach and Johnny Mac Giolla Bhride were the other Gaoth Dobhair scorers.
Playing with a stiff breeze in the first thanks to brilliant individual performances from Campbell and Mulholland
Buncrana led by five points 0-15 to 1-7 at half-time.
Except for a brief period in closing minutes of the first quarter when they briefly led after De Burca raced through to score a well taken individual goal and points from Eamon Collum and Harkin.
But Buncrana’s ability to hit two-pointers saw them move six points clear
And thanks to a fourth Buhcrana two-pointer led 0-15 to 1-7 at half-time.
Gaoth Dobhair opened the second half on the front foot and Eamon Collum and Niall Friel landed two points in the opening eight minutes of the new half to cut the Buncrana lead to three points.
But despite playing with a stiff breeze the locals failed to score again as their shooting deserted them as their nine second half wides are testimony to
They he also had four strikes that dropped short
Buncrana closed out the game with points in the last quarter from the outstanding Sean Doherty
Sean Parker 0-2; Sean Doherty 0-1.

April 4 at 2.30pm.The unveiling of the statue is part of the Shore Walk Public Artwork and Refurbishment Project

says it’s nice to think that the Pope will likely know about the Buncrana event in due course too.He explains how it all came about following a meeting last month to discuss potential future plans for the Derry and Raphoe dioceses.“I met with the Papal Nuncio and afterwards I told him that we were having a small event along the shores of Lough Swilly in the Derry Diocese looking out across to the Raphoe Diocese,” Fr Bradley said
“I told him that we would be delighted if he could attend
but never in a thousand years did I think he would actually be able to come.”Archbishop Montemayor is just the second Argentinian to be named an Apostolic Nuncio
and he’s the fifteenth Apostolic Nuncio appointed to Ireland since diplomatic relationships were established with the Holy See in 1929.Fr Bradley is understandably thrilled by the prospect of such a high-profile visit and he’s asking the community to turn-out in big numbers to welcome the Archbishop and to further celebrate Fr Hegarty’s lasting legacy.“It is a huge honour for us to host someone who holds the highest ecclesiastical office in this country
It really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”Buncrana’s most celebrated priest Fr Hegarty was murdered by the British for saying Mass during the Penal Times in the early 18th century - and Fr Bradley says it’s a fitting tribute to him
to have someone of the Papal Nuncio’s standing unveil his statue

Foyle MLA Pádraig Delargy has described the A2 Buncrana Road scheme is a significant infrastructure project which has the potential to help unlock the north-west
He was speaking after asking Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins for an update on the project in the Assembly
She confirmed a public consultation will begin towards the end of the year on the draft North West Transport plan
Minister Kimmins believes the A2 will be an important part of that process………
The case was heard at Buncrana District Court
who was arrested twice for public drunkenness in the space of two weeks
is eager to come out of prison with a “clean slate”
entered a guilty plea to two charges of being intoxicated in public last year when he appeared before Buncrana District Court.Solicitor Frank-Aran Murphy told Judge Eiteain Cunningham that his client was currently in custody. “We’re anxious to deal with the matters because he wants to leave prison with a clean slate,” he said.Sergeant Emmet Brady outlined the facts of the cases against the 41-year-old defendant
He explained how Garda Hamilton had been called to the Ard Crana housing estate in Cockhill on July 23
The female occupant of a house had called the guards to report that she wanted the accused
removed from the house as he was intoxicated and causing a disturbance. On arrival at the scene
Garda Hamilton observed that Gary King had left the house but he was “stumbling around” outside. He was highly intoxicated
and unable to say where he was going.Sgt Brady told the court that Mr King was arrested because he was a danger to himself and others in the vicinity.A fixed charge penalty notice was subsequently issued in respect of the offence but it was unpaid
The court then heard brief details of a second offence
which had occurred at the same location just over two weeks earlier. On this occasion
Garda McMahon arrived at Ard Crana on July 6
Mr King was present and was intoxicated to such an extent that he was a danger to himself and others.Once again
a fixed charge penalty notice was sent out in the post but the defendant failed to pay and a summons was issued instead
Defence solicitor Murphy told the judge that Mr King could not have paid the postal fines because he was serving a custodial sentence when the letters would have arrived at his address: “He went into custody on the 23rd and the fixed charges obviously couldn't have gone to the prison
He would have been eligible for a fixed charge notice.”
Mr Murphy said Mr King is turning his life around for the better: “He wants to leave prison with a clean slate; once he’s done
Judge Cunningham said she would mark a conviction on one of the Section 4 summonses and take the other matter into account
She imposed a fine of €100 for the July 6 offence
with five days [in prison] in lieu of the fine. The judge also granted Mr Murphy’s request for Legal Aid
which wouldn’t normally be permitted for relatively minor Public Order offences.“I will grant it due to the complexities with this matter and because there are so many sheets before this court,” Judge Cunningham explained

St Eunan's were too good for Buncrana at the weekend
St Eunan’s had too much for an outgunned Buncrana side in a contest played in miserable conditions at O’Donnell Park on Friday
The Inishowen side had a gale force wind with driving rain behind them early on at the weekend and actually led by 1-1 to 0-3 at the break
But the stronger Letterkenny lads asserted themselves in the second-half and ran out easy winners as darkness fell heavily
Wind-assisted Buncrana had a great start when Caolan O’ Neill goaled and he added a point as they led by 1-1 to 0-0 after ten minutes
Eunan’s replied with points from John Kealy (2) and Matt Ahern to leave the visitors leading by one at the midpoint
But it also took two great saves from Eunan’s keeper Cian Hennessy to prevent certain goals for Buncrana and a greater upper hand.
But Eunan’s steamed clear in the first ten minutes of the second half
John Kealy netted and four unanswered points from Cathal O’Brien (2)
Brendan Gaffey and Gavin Forde put them firmly in command
Buncrana’s sole reply was a pointed free from Caelan O’Neill
Eunan’s sub Cian Randles also hit the net late on as did Gavin Forde with O’Brien
Forde and Kealy getting the final points for an easy win
3f; Gavin Forde 1-3; John Kealy 1-2; Cian Randles 1-0; Matt Ahern 0-1; Brendan Gaffey 0-1

“Your words capture the unimaginable suffering endured by Palestinians
especially the children,” said Dr Abdalmajid
and a keen understanding of the ongoing reality in Palestine.”
She presented Rachael with a beautiful handmade box made by deaf children in Palestine
Rachael’s work will now be included in a new book of poetry and writing being compiled by the Palestinian Embassy that Irish people have written in response to the crisis in Palestine.
Rachael said she felt it was important that Irish people take a stand in support of the people of Gaza
and hopes to make a visit to Crana College as part of her visit
She told Rachael that it was very important that young people learn to have empathy
and was concerned that they might be afraid to speak out because they oppose the actions of Israel in Gaza
She expressed her gratitude to the people of Ireland
and said that the support of the Irish people was “so important” to the people of Palestine.

Elm Park residents are seeking the opportunity to rebuild their mica-affected homes elsewhere

with planned flood defences still years away
Deputy Ward explains: “A proposed relocation strategy
offers a practical and cost-effective alternative to the estimated €4.3 million needed for demolishing and rebuilding homes in this flood-prone area
This plan not only provides residents with a fresh start but also saves State finances by eliminating the need for flood defenses at Elm Park.”
He said: “The Minister of State for the OPW and Flood Relief

It is now imperative that the Department of Housing
and Donegal County Council collaborate to reach a fair resolution
we are committed to advocating for immediate action to shield these families from further devastation.”

Ryan was found dead in his cell at Wheatfield Prison on Christmas Day
Ryan was said to have been in poor health lately and sources suggest that his death was of natural causes
A death notice for Ryan described his passing as occurring ‘unexpectedly’
Ryan was jailed for threatening to burn his neighbours’ children and ‘nail them to the floorboards’
Ryan had 44 previous convictions when he was sentenced to 14 months in prison by Judge Éiteáin Cunningham at Letterkenny District Court
Ryan was charged with a series of vicious threats in Buncrana over a 13-month period in 2019 and 2020.
John McLaughlin and his son Pauric observed Ryan in the Burwood estate and he began verbally abusing them
Ryan told Mr McLaughlin that he would kill him and slash his tyres
After telling Mr McLaughlin that he would ‘never sleep comfortably in your bed again’
knee cap them and nail them to the floorboards.
Ryan also threatened to burn Mr McLaughlin’s house down
This was one of several incidents outlined to the court
including that he shouted abuse at Gardai on one occasion and attempting to gain entry to a property
John McLaughlin observed Ryan videoing a house at Burwood
Mr McLaughlin became concerned and began to record Ryan

Ryan told Mr McLaughlin: “You’ll be gone out of here before I will

He then admitted demanding money with menaces from the landlord of the house he was renting telling him he wanted €1,000 to move out or he would burn down the house
The court was played a twelve minute audio message of a telephone conversation between Ryan and the landlord
Ryan was heard saying that he would leave if he was given €1,000 but if he didn’t receive the funds he would burn the house down and also threatened to torch the home of the landlord
I'm going to burn this house and your house
A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service confirmed “that there was a death of a person in custody on Christmas Day
