flower shop in Clane said local businesses are struggling enough without having items stolen from their stores said a handmade door wreath was stolen outside the store She said it took six hours to make and cost €150 which went unnoticed until the following day but the shop has since posted images on social media in hopes of identifying the culprits Amanda said she originally posted the images with the culprits' faces blurred out She said she wanted to give them time to be honest but they never came forward She then published unblurred images on social media She said the issue is bigger than just taking a wreath with local businesses already under massive financial strain and it’s disheartening to see this happen She added: “Times are hard enough for small businesses and we can’t afford these losses.” The incident has been reported to Gardaí and Amanda has urged the community to remain vigilant “We’ve all got to support each other," she said The shop has been running a charitable initiative called the “Tag Tree,” where customers could take a tag Amanda has urged those taking part to leave their gifts at the local Londis by December 22nd to be delivered to nursing home residents in Clane The shop is moving to a new location at Unit 16 Clane Captain Sam McCormack and Orla Aldridge It was looking an extra time decider as Clane and Sarsfields were deadlocked as we entered the 63 minute of the 2025 decider of the Aldridge Cup at Manguard Park Clane had held the upper hand for most of the game despite Sarsfields opening an early lead in the premier Kildare pre-season competition After Sam McCormack had leveled it up at 0-13 apiece as we reached the final minute of time added close to the stand side and into Milltown end referee Ray Cahill was alerted by a line umpire that Sarsfields had broken the 3x3 at the back and the match official had no hesitation in bringing the ball up to the Sarsfields 20m line where Sam McCormack had no difficulty in tapping over for the winning score as the final whistle arrived So the new rules certainly had a big impact on this game fine score-taking but in the end extremely harsh to lose a game in such a manner but it makes no difference whether this type of indiscretion is in the first minute of the late in time added on any sort of indiscipline and while many will feel the punishment doesn't match the crime in this situation it is a matter of sucking it up and learning from the experience It was Clane's Tadhg Montgomery who open the scoring for the boys in white after 28 seconds but Sarsfields hit back with four points in a row from Karl and Conor Hartley and two frees from the accurate boot of Shane Doyle to lead 0-4 to 0-1 after just seven minutes Clane got a grip of affairs soon after that and with two excellent points from senior panelist Alan Fanning along with white flags from the influential Sean Dunne and a Sam McCormack free Clane regained the lead by a single point with 13 minutes on the clock Sarsfields leveled up with Karl Hartley cutting in along the end line before being fouled and Shane Doyle tied it up at 0-5 apiece The first of the game's two-pointers arrived with Killian O'Sullivan finding the range and when Cian Costigan replied two converted frees from Sam McCormack had the Clane boys three clear as we reached the half-way mark Points from Daragh Ryan and Shane Doyle instantly reduced the gap on the resumption but an alert referee spotted a foul 'inside' on Alan Fanning saw Killian O'Sullivan convert a two-pointer free to restore the three point gap.Sarsfields who played a lot better in the second half then took control land points from Conor Hartley Conor Hartley and an excellent effort from Gavin Anderson had the sides level at 0-12 apiece with 53 minutes on the clock.Sam McCormack found Adam Fanning but a brilliant block by Kieran Dwyer denied him Clane hit two wides before substitute Jake Loakman made no mistake from a free and Sarsfields were in front for the first time since the seventh minute of the opening half A high ball into the Sarsfields danger area caused a bit of havoc but was cleared however a free ensued brought into the centre and Sam McCormack tied it up with 62 minutes on the clock The rest as they say is history; from the kick-out The Sash awarded a free but referee informed that the Newbridge had breached the 3x3 rule brought the ball up to the 20m line and Same McCormack hit over the winner A fine game and early silverware for Clane's new manager Paul Kelly (former Naas headman) but it was a game that could have gone either way and Sarsfields boss will not lose too much sleep over this result Next up the senior league gets under way this weekend Subs: Adam Fitzpatrick for Cillian A Maynooth Labour councillor has said she is “disappointed” at Kildare County Council's refusal to implement a HGV ban on Main Street, Clane. Cllr Angela Feeney put forward her motion to ban HGVs from Main Street at a meeting of Clane-Maynooth Municipal District on Friday December 6 2024. Cllr Feeney told Kildare Now this week she was requesting a HGV ban in Clane due to rising congestion in the town, and for safety reasons. She said: “I was looking for a ban because anyone who's trying to drive through Clane recently, it's absolutely totally congested, at any time of the day there's queues of traffic going into Clane. “I think that's because, since the Sallins bypass, which is a great addition to roads, but now it's moved the problem up the road and all the traffic is coming down from that bypass into Clane, including the HGVs.” “A lot of people complain about the 139 bus being regularly delayed because that's coming from Naas to go through Clane, and it's just stuck in traffic as well. So the HGVs coming through the town I said would be one of the solutions to alleviate traffic a little bit.” According to Cllr Feeney, the traffic problem in Clane has been slowly building up over the last two years or so, but for the last 12 months has been particularly bad. The general election candidate said the issue came up on the doors while canvassing in recent weeks. She added: “It came up on the doors for me when I was out canvassing, Clane as you know is in the constituency, and the one thing that kept coming up on the doors was people asking can you do anything about the congestion and the traffic in Clane. “The main street is getting so congested, but it's a narrow enough main street and there's been a few near-misses where HGVs have had to negotiate their way up a very narrow street, while pedestrians try to make their way through it. “There's been a few near-misses and people are worried about their safety as well.” A report issued by the council stated that Cllr Feeney's motion was 'premature'. The report stated: 'This request is premature pending the opening of the Capdoo Relief Road and detailed consideration of the impact of such a restriction and the associated road upgrades that would be required to implement a HGV restriction. 'At present there is neither the funding nor the resources in place to progress a project of this nature.' Cllr Feeney said: “I was disappointed with the council's response, because they're saying that it's premature until the Capdoo road is finished. But I said to them at the meeting, well, can you tell me any timeline on that? And they said they didn't know if they'd have funding for that. “They're more or less saying that the answer to the problem is down the road, but they couldn't even give me a definite timeline on it.” The Maynooth Labour councillor concluded: “That's disappointing, because at least if you could go back to people and say, look, we can't ban HGVs at the moment until that relief road is in place, but yet they're not giving us any timeline and they're not even guaranteeing that there'll be funding for that. “You're talking a lot of years down the road, so people in Clane, and people going through Clane are going to have to put up with this issue and it's only going to get worse in my view.” Patrick O'Connor, Derbhla and Granla Martin and Ros Borton  Orlaith Edwards, Caitriona O'Dare and Karen Mooney Niamh Wkiteley, Aoife Mullahy and Ciara Doran Glenda Farrell, Ger Mullahy and Deirdre Maddock Tony O'Grady, Kevin Mullahy and David Farrell Lisa Manning, Erin Corrigan and Orla Conway Natalie Kenna, Deidre Reid and Yuka Conway Kildare Nationalist Newsletter delivered directly to your inbox deeply regretted and sadly missed by his loving wife Mary extended family and a large circle of friends Clane (W91YPX4) on Sunday from 2pm - 5pm with evening prayers at 4:30pm Removal from his residence on Monday at approx please use the "Condolences" section below The Funeral Mass can be viewed live in the webstream section below Donations, if desired, in memory of Michael to Parkinson's Ireland which can be made by clicking on the following link : Parkinson's Ireland For all enquiries, please contact Oliver Reilly Funeral Directors on (045) 868230 CondolencesDonate to CharityWould you like to mark a birthday Devoted husband of his beloved wife Kathleen Dearly loved father of sons Brian and Aidan Deeply missed by his loving sisters Margaret and Marie; his brother Liam; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; his daughter-in-law Mary; his nieces and nephews Michael joins his departed parents William and Mary Ann Michael will repose at Oliver Reilly's Funeral Home with removal afterwards to Firmount West (house private) Funeral Mass will take place on Monday (December 30th) at 11am in St with burial afterwards in Mainham Cemetery Messages of comfort and support may be forwarded through the “Condolences” section below Michael’s family would like to thank you for your support at this sad time Family flowers only. Brother Bosco Cup – Leinster Colleges Senior “A” Football Preliminary Quarter-Final THE Football Review Committee (FRC) recruited some of the most intelligent and successful figures from the sport of gaelic football and engaged in a nationwide research and study programme to come up with new enhancements to the rules of gaelic football, changes which were emphatically voted through at the recent Special Congress. These changes were made in order to re-introduce much more kicking to the sport, to increase the amount of contests for possession, and to bring more drama and excitement to the sport that we all love. Hindsight is always 20:20 in these situations and the Moate CS management and players will take immense satisfaction from outscoring their opponents by 0-4 to no score in the least 20 minutes, from their incredible composure on the ball when the pressure was greatest, and indeed from the fact that Scoil Mhuire arguably had the brightest individual stars in midfielder Daniel Colbert and wing back Mick O’Toole, the Moate team was much more balanced, with no obvious weak links. Niall Hagan and Darragh Madden kicked all ten scores between them but alongside them, Darragh Deegan won a couple of tough possessions in between two defenders and earned two frees that were converted, while Conor Daly and Eoin McCormack were hugely industrious, making ground in tough conditions. If there was a Moate CS-centred highlight reel, then many of the biggest moments would be some of James Mitchell’s incredible catches at midfield, on a day when high fielding should have been all but impossible. Further back down the field, Jack Ryan played a superb game in nightmare conditions for a goalkeeper, and while Cormac Murphy lived on the edge in terms of his marking style, he was the source of a lot of good turnover wins, with the Offaly duo of Adam Fox and Séan Óg Foley also very solid on the ball, initiating attacks and still doing their defensive work. Still Moate stayed in the game however, with Hagan kicking frees and Darragh Madden a constant threat from open play. The pitch deteriorated from soft to soaked over the course of the first half, leading to referee Enda Kenny saying to both managers at the break that he was going to start the second half, but that there was no guarantee he would finish it, and with Scoil Mhuire very narrowly in front, 0-6 to 0-5, it was hard to say which side would have been more hopeful of an abandonment from the Ballinagore official. Ten minutes into the second half, Josh Gannon had just struck two points that would illuminate Croke Park in July, never mind Moate in a December squall, and if James Moore’s shot for goal hadn’t been blocked, Scoil Mhuire would have been in a commanding position, even more than they were at 0-9 to 0-6 ahead on a day when scores weren’t coming easy. Pressure began to mount however, as Moate sensed that long ball football was their best option. Fox, Foley, Cian Whitney and Mitchell all handled a lot of ball in the middle and they sent any number of testers into the Scoil Mhuire square, most of which were brilliantly handled by Paddy Connolly, who had now dropped back to cover off that threat. Still Hagan and Madden kicked the points that eliminated the gap, with Hagan unlucky not to score a fisted goal on a high ball, only for Clane goalkeeper Evan Dunne to recover and clear the ball off the line. The lead point didn’t come easily however and there were palpitations among Moate supporters when in the last minute of normal time, Josh Gannon sent a '45' crashing off the upright above Jack Ryan’s goal. The break was kind however in that Clane won it but couldn’t get back into a scoring position, and a minute later, Adam Fox showed impeccable composure at the back, Eoin McCormack made great ground with his run forward, and Madden duly delivered the finish that the move deserved, clinching the school’s place in the last eight of the championship as a result. In footballing terms, tougher tests probably lie ahead. In terms of character, spirit and battling qualities however, it’s unlikely that any team will need to dig any deeper than the side coached by Niall Daly and Peter Tormey did last Thursday. Moate CS: N Hagan 0-6 (0-4f, 0-1m), D Madden 0-4 (0-1f). Scoil Mhuire, Clane: M O’Toole 0-2 (0-1f), A Fitzpatrick 0-2, J Gannon 0-2, B Kehoe 0-1, E Lyons 0-1m, D Colbert 0-1. The quarter-finals are an open draw, with Naas CBS, Coláiste Eoin (Dublin), Coláiste Choilm (Tullamore), Árdscoil na Tríonaide (Athy) and championship favourites Coláiste Mhuire of Mullingar also through to the last eight alongside Moate CS. They will be joined by the winner of the grouped teams section (either Laois Schools or Maynooth Educational Campus) and the winner of Marist College’s fixture in Navan against St Pat’s. Moate had the more balanced team, but it would be churlish to look beyond Clane midfielder Daniel Colbert, who was strong, athletic, and is a seriously talented footballer to boot. In the end, Clane United ended their sorrow years of hurt in the competition with a victory after extra-time and penalties over rivals Naas United on a drizzly, mild and cloudy early Sunday afternoon clash in Rathangan last week. You could tell that this was a rivalry. The match official ended up showing ten yellow cards throughout the 120 minutes, two of which resulting in a red card to Naas’s Victor Olapado in the 76th minute. There were plenty of hard tackles going in from both teams, which had the two side-lines fairly animated. Naas United had less chances, but found the net in the 35th minute. From the counter-attack, Darragh Faherty charged through the middle of the Clane defence like a Spanish bull to assist Victor Olapado to his right, who slid the ball into the left-hand-corner of John Ball’s net in what was an excellent finish. This put Naas 1-0 up at the interval. The tackles kept flying in, but there was more drama to come. Five minutes into added-time, Sheldon NBala’s cross found the head of Daniel Phillips, who had the ball hanging in the air before it dipped into the corner of the net. Extra-time was to come. There were no clear-cut chances in extra-time, but Aidan Ralph of Clane and Manny Phillips and Ritchie French of Naas were unlucky to miss the target during this period. There was drama even in the penalty shootout, as Mark Kelly of Clane had three attempts after Naas goalkeeper Joey Higgins came off his line twice to deny him, but the third found the target. Adam Mazur’s save and Stephen Leavey’s finish won the game and silverware for Clane at long-last. The offences are alleged to have occurred in a Qashqai SUV in the car park of Mainham Cemetry, Clane on the evening of 9 April 2023. “And he’s not in custody?” said a somewhat incredulous Judge Desmond Zaidan. “And there was consent to bail?” he also asked. Barrister Mark Gibbons began his defence by telling the court that although his client was originally from Somalia, he did not require a translator. “The defendant met with the injured party on the evening of 9 April 2023 by consent,” said Sergeant Dave Hanrahan, for the state. “It is alleged he drove her to Mainham Cemetery outside Clane and raped her twice,” said Sgt Hanrahan. “There had been some consent earlier, some kissing and touching,” acknowledged the sergeant. “But she didn’t consent to more than that?” asked the judge. Once the book of evidence was formally handed over to Mr Gibbons, the judge gave the defendant the alibi warning. This means that if the defendant intends to use an alibi in his defence, he just has a fortnight in which he must notify the state. The judge also consented to legal aid for a solicitor, as well as a senior and junior barrister for his circuit court trial. The judge allowed for reporting the defendant’s details, but not to mention the injured party. A Sam McCormack goal eight minutes into proceedings went a long way to seeing Tom Cribbin’s side open up a four-point advantage (1-6 to 0-5) by the half-time break. Eadestown had remained neck and neck with their opponents up until the midway point of the opening half, but eight wides in that period alone would prove costly. Having suffered a six-point reversal against the same opposition in the championship preliminary round last month, Clane were determined not to afford Eadestown a way back into contention this time around. Early second-half points from McCormack and Brian McLaughlin pushed their lead out to six points before Eadestown got motoring again through Pauric Touhy. Sean Hynes then capped a fine counter-attack when he split the posts before Cian Bolton converted a free to reduce the gap to three with ten minutes remaining. But a combination of poor finishing and resolute defending by Clane, ensured that that would be as close as Eadestown would go to a comeback. Instead, Clane remained out in front as McLaughlin and Shane O’Sullivan both struck over, before substitute Cathal O’Brien put a gloss on the final scoreline when he found the back of the net in injury time following great perseverance by fellow reserve, Stephen Brereton to keep that attack alive. Clane's Cian Shanahan gets a tackle in on Naas' Tom Kelly Photo: Sean Brilly Highly-impressive Naas put the departure of three-in-a-row winning manager Joe Murphy behind them with an emphatic first win of the Hanlon Concrete Ltd Senior Football League over a disappointing Clane outfit in Conneff Park on Saturday evening. With Murphy taking the reins of his native Carlow, Pádraig Cribben took charge temporarily for Naas pending a permanent appointment and he would have been delighted with a fluent attacking display from a team who had only picked up one point from their opening two games. Previously unbeaten Clane meanwhile, with former Naas manager Paul Kelly in charge, struggled with their kick-out, particularly into a strong breeze in the first half, with Naas dominant around the middle and the home side couldn’t cope with the fast, direct running of the likes of Elliot Beirne and Dermot Hanafin. Kevin Cummins was another to cause Clane problems, with a ten-point haul including a superb two-point free from well outside the arc, and he opened the scoring with a close-range free. Adam Fitzpatrick was a lively performer in attack for Clane and he responded with two points. Two fine scores from Hanafin sandwiched one from Clane midfielder James Dolan and at three-points apiece after nine minutes it looked as though we were in for a competitive game. Sean Hanafin on the ball for Naas Photo: Sean BrillyBut a minute later Naas got in for the only goal of the game, from which they never looked back. The two Hanafin brothers set up Paul McDermott to finish to the bottom corner of Hugh Muldoon’s net. Shane McCormack hit back with a free for Clane but that big two-point free from Cummins kicked off a scoring spree of five points in eight minutes with the speedy Beirne registering two to add to another from Cummins and a lovely left-footer from Dermot Hanafin. That made it 1-9 to 0-4 after twenty minutes and although Shane O’Sullivan responded with two frees and Caolan Smith added another, Naas finished the half on top with Dermot Hanafin and Cummins adding their fourth and fifth points respectively to send them in 1-11 to 0-7 ahead. The second half was something of a procession with early Clane wides ruining their hopes of a comeback. Naas tacked on six more points (Cummins with four of those and Beirne and Sean Hanafin with the others) before centre-back Hugh Prendergast ended twenty minutes without a score for the home side. Experienced Naas star Eoin Doyle Photo: Sean BrillyNaas didn’t let up, adding six points to Clane’s three by the finish with that man Cummins bringing his tally to ten, Beirne adding his fourth, Sean Hanafin his second and Tom Kelly and Leo Kennedy getting themselves on the scoresheet. O’Sullivan provided the only resistance for Clane with three points including a two-point free.
