Friday May 2 A nephew of notorious gangster John Gilligan Dylan Gilligan survived an alleged murder attempt last year when he was struck by a car in Clondalkin That attack was also suspected to be connected to the ongoing feud in the area Serial criminal Scott Purdue (27) has twice survived being shot at as part of different feuds in the Clondalkin area Detective Garda Neil McGrath previously gave evidence that a garda saw Gilligan cycling near Greenfort Terrace He was wearing dark clothes and a white plastic bag was hanging heavily from the handlebars Gilligan sped up when he noticed the garda car The garda considered this suspicious and turned his vehicle around Gilligan had reached his home at this point and the garda didn't pursue it any further The prosecution's case was that the plastic bag on the handlebars could be linked to one seen later in the possession of the suspected shooter and the heavy object in the bag was the firearm used to shoot Mr Purdue who was wearing a hooded jacket and trousers with a stripe who was walking in the area around 8.20pm with a child gave evidence during the trial that they were overtaken by a man walking quickly in dark clothes and carrying a light coloured plastic bag saw a flash and ducked to the ground with the child in fear then saw a man dressed in black running in the direction of Liffey Valley Another witness saw a male fall onto the road near the Fonthill Roadabout and a stocky man try to flag down cars in the aftermath of the bangs This witness recalled hearing the bangs in close proximity to seeing a man running who looked scared Mr Smith told the court the prosecution's case was that Mr Purdue was this man seen running Evidence was also heard from people who assisted Mr Purdue or saw his leg bleeding Mr Purdue was brought to a nearby house and when paramedics arrived they recalled seeing an entry and exit wound on his lower left leg and an injury to his right foot No medical report was provided to the court Gardai encountered Gilligan again at 8.55pm on Shancastle Avenue He was wearing a Tommy Hilfiger top and trousers which were different to his earlier clothing He was arrested and swabs taken from his hands and face during his detention tested positive for gunshot residue A forensic examiner told the trial that these forensic results strongly supported the proposition that Gilligan had recently discharged a firearm Defence counsel said his client maintains that he had no involvement in this incident Mr Byrne asked the court to take into account his client's age at the time personal circumstances and the conduct of the trial The judge directed that Gilligan should receive any medical or rehabilitative treatment he requires while in custody Hurley Ger (1st May 2025) (Clondalkin and late of Clonakilty, Co Cork) peacefully, in the kind care of all the staff of the Lynn Ward, Tallaght Hospital; Beloved husband and best friend of Mary, loving son of the late Tim and Rita, loving brother of Lucy, Jess, Fran, Dec and the late Neil and Terrance. Yesterday, South Dublin County Council announced that the Brú Chrónáin Round Tower Visitor Centre will be closed until further notice due to “unforeseen circumstances”. “We regret to inform you that Brú Chrónáin - Round Tower Visitor Centre is closed until further notice,” a statement said. “This is due to unforeseen circumstances and any further updates will be provided when available. Thank you for your understanding and apologies for any inconvenience.” According to Sinn Féin councillor William Carey, the statement was received with “huge shock” and “the future of 15 members of staff who work there remains uncertain at this time”. “My first concern is for the 15 members of staff and their jobs. This is particularly worrying as this happens two weeks before Christmas,” Mr Carey said. “There is the wider effect this will have on the tourism around the centre. Brú Chrónáin has established a regular tourist trade and a break in continuity will jeopardise that business. “I am calling on SDCC to put in place a temporary management team to run the centre until a permanent solution can be resolved. “The Brú Chrónáin Round Tower Visitor Centre is probably the single most important piece of Heritage we have in South Dublin. “To have it closed like this is totally unacceptable. Whilst it is important the restaurant and visitor centre is run on a proper basis, the facility cannot be subject to closure for commercial reasons. “South Dublin County Council has a greater responsibility to the whole community to ensure that a facility such as the Heritage centre must remain open at all times.” Cllr Carey explained there was no prior notice of any concerns around the future of the visitor centre. “We have a local area committee meeting on December 18 and I will be seeking to have this matter discussed as an emergency item,” he said. “This is extremely disappointing to see this happening as Christmas approaches. I will also be writing to the CEO of SDCC to ask what the immediate response will be to resolve this situation.” The Irish Independent has contacted South Dublin County Council for further comment. Dublin News‘We would love to recruit younger donors and start them on a lifetime of blood donation’A new campaign has been launched encouraging people to consider becoming regular blood donors. The BusConnects corridor linking Tallaght and Clondalkin to Dublin city centre almost a year after the decision was initially due The National Transport Authority (NTA) has sought permission for 12 dedicated bus lanes as part of its programme to overhaul the capital’s bus system The Tallaght/Clondalkin core bus corridor is the ninth scheme approved to date The NTA submitted the Tallaght/Clondalkin application in April 2023 The board had been due to issue its decision in November 2023 but despite determining there was no requirement for an oral hearing permission was not granted until this month The 15.5km corridor will run from The Square Shopping Centre to Nicholas Street near St Patrick’s Cathedral in the city centre and is expected to remove more than 100,000 daily car trips from the roads The BusConnects programme has two strands: a network redesign and the 12 bus corridors which involves the reorganisation of services on existing road infrastructure the corridors require construction to achieve segregation of bus and cycle lanes from traffic In some instances this necessitates road widening An Bord Pleanála received 55 submissions on the Tallaght/Clondalkin project mostly from local residents along the route as well as 19 objections to compulsory purchase orders (CPOs) for land acquisition the majority of which came from commercial property owners The 55 submissions varied from residents concerned about the loss of privacy green space and safety concerns in relation to road widening; to the reduction in space for cars and the requirement for private motorists to take more circuitous routes Other submissions said insufficient provision had been made for cyclists with bicycles required to share space with buses and cars over parts of the route Most CPO objections related to loss of parking for customers and deliveries One homeowner objected to the acquisition of 3m of his driveway as “parking is required for at least six cars and space to turn in the driveway” In recommending permission be granted the board’s inspector Donal Donnelly said the scheme would “make a significant contribution to carbon reduction the easing of congestion and the creation of more sustainable travel patterns for the growing population” It was also “essential to bring about improved connections the disadvantaged and vulnerable road users” [ Blanchardstown route is latest BusConnects corridor to be challenged in High CourtOpens in new window ] The impact on private car users had “been kept to a minimum” “The fact that two-way general traffic has been retained throughout most of this core bus corridor indicates to me that the proposed scheme may have gone further to accentuate modal shift from the private car to bus transport/active travel “Had the proposed scheme been designed at the present time, when climate change is becoming increasingly apparent, rather than a number of years ago, it may have been more radical in tackling car dominance.” However, he said, “on balance, I have concluded that the overall benefits of the proposed scheme considerably outweigh the negatives”. The eight other schemes approved by the board run to the city from Liffey Valley, Clongriffin, Belfield/Blackrock, Ballymun/Finglas, Swords, Ringsend, Blanchardstown and Lucan. Routes from Templeogue/Rathfarnham, Kimmage and Bray await the decision of the board. Three of the approved schemes, Clongriffin, Belfield/Blackrock and Blanchardstown, are the subject of ongoing judicial review proceedings. Construction of the first schemes is due to start next year. Rip.ie, The Irish Times Building, 24-28 Tara Street, Dublin 2, Ireland Fáilte chuig gaa.ie - suíomh oifigiúil CLG Round Towers are holding a fundraising marathon in Clondalkin on Saturday morning 10 people from the Round Towers club will run - either a marathon or half marathon - around the perimeter of the Monastery Road pitch Money raised from the initiative will go towards an all-weather multi-purpose warm up/training area at the venue One of the chosen 10 is senior footballer Mick Hallows who has given distinguished service as a senior footballer for much of the past couple of decades Hallows’ laughs when it is suggested that he is a glutton for punishment it was probably borne out of the fact that a few of us had been training in the club for the marathon - can we leverage that rather than having to start again,” he replies but I don't think anything will be quite like this I thought it might capture the imagination in terms of fundraising rather than your traditional marathon.” Naturally fit with an interest in endurance running Hallows’ hasn’t tailored his training for Saturday’s venue I'm odd enough in that when I start something the unknown is a good thing for me,” he responds some of them have done a half marathon around the pitch the most I've ran around the pitch is probably 5K “I just think I'd rather not know what is coming on the day but I'd rather scenic runs around parks or canals but I don't want to be practising the toughness.” having recently completed his second Dublin marathon it probably lends itself to be able to do something,” he explains “We used to be playing competitive games in November and December whereas now we are finishing maybe in September but only the marathon distance in the last two years or so.” Altering his approach compared to Gaelic Football is a challenge Hallows has most certainly embraced “It is definitely counter intuitive to Gaelic Football as in if I was 24 I wouldn't be advising or doing this if I had a good few years of club football ahead of me,” he remarks but you can nearly train yourself to be one geared whereas Gaelic Football now is all about explosiveness I'd always be near the top of the group I probably put off any sort of distance running because it would have been earlier in the club career I need some sort of succession plan in my head Mick Hallows remains a key figure for Round Towers' senior footballers Planning and plotting for the future is beneficial but the fact that various sections of the club are heavily involved is a source of optimism initially I looked at who in the club had trained for the marathon,” Hallows says It is only in the last two months or so that we decided this We've a very strong ladies section in Round Towers I wanted to ensure we had at least one from the section so Natalie is our representative from the ladies side “We've someone from the senior hurlers What we looked at next was parents of juvenile players eight are doing the full marathon distance and two are doing a half marathon distance each it is actually because we've our AGM on that day too The venture is attracting plenty of talk in the area and Hallows is hoping that a supportive crowd will gather in Clondalkin to lend moral and financial support “It has garnered lots of what are you doing or are you mad?,” he says so they are all good things that people are inquisitive and we've built a spreadsheet and PowerPoint so that if you come up at any point in the day they'll be counting the laps for each person how many laps have they done or what they have left It will be interactive a bit because you wouldn't have the traditional tracking you'd have in a Dublin marathon “We didn't want to cancel the Towers Óg we wanted to get ahead of it so they can see what is going on The parents will be having a coffee and hopefully we will rattle a few money drums while we are there.” Hallows appreciates what the club provides he is fully aware of the relevance of ensuring the next generation is adequately catered for the eldest lad started in the Towers Óg nursery,” he says Tallaght is a similar size and it has five or six clubs but you can't use that all year round “We have an Astro that is about half the size of a normal pitch This area that the Astro is going in at is a warm up area that is sandy and pot holed It isn't really great with no THE uniqueness of the busk is in its simplicity; it’s a completely cost-effective idea; it just requires people showing up and giving up their time,” explains Clondalkin-born singer-songwriter and RTE folk award nominee Colm Gavin when asked about the 11th annual Ciaran Carr Christmas Busk in Clondalkin Village This year’s line-up is “far and away the most illustrious we’ve ever had,” featuring Shosby RTÉ 2FM rising stars Brad Heidi & Kylabelle The busk initially began in 2014 and has raised thousands for the Ciarán Carr Foundation since its inception Ciarán was a popular local figure who played for Round Tower GAA club and died of sudden adult death syndrome in 2012 established the Ciarán Carr Foundation to raise money to put defibrillators in local amenities Gavin recently performed two sold-out benefit concerts in New York City at the prestigious Joanne’s on West 68th Street Gavin curated and performed at both concerts which were in aid of the Lupus Research Alliance the illness that Lady Gaga’s aunt Joanne passed away from in December 1974 Colm Gavin’s brand new album ‘Diggin’ the Idleflower’ his fourth official release with Beo Records was launched in Whelan’s in May this year has spent the better part of a month on the RTE Radio 1 Recommends list Colm is fresh off the heels of a UK/US/IRL tour becoming one of the most celebrated artists on the Irish music circuit today This tour saw him return home to bring his own unique blend of witty onstage banter and sensitive compositions to venues in Galway He also recently performed as part of an evening of contemporary Irish music that was being presented by Aras Chronain along with Madelyn Monaghan and Caitriona Sherlock This year’s busk is set to be the “biggest yet,” according to Colm so don’t miss out when it is performed outside the Clondalkin Credit Union on December 21 at 7:30 pm; get your tickets now we sat down with Colm to discuss the event: Have you performed for the foundation before what have your previous experiences been like I’ve performed at the Christmas Eve busk on Grafton Street in aid of the Simon Community I remember seeing an interview with Glen Hansard; he was sitting in Tompkin Square Park and said that his hope for the busk was that perhaps in every town in Ireland the local musicians would get together at Christmas time and give the money over to a local charity we had the first ever Ciarán Carr Christmas Busk Have there been any challenges or highlights of working on it so far How has it differed from other gigs you have done The uniqueness of the busk is in its simplicity; it’s a completely cost-effective idea; it just requires people showing up and giving up their time whom your readers will know from the classic Irish 80s group In Tua Nua will be performing at this year’s busk 2FM rising stars Brad Heidi and Kylabelle are set to be with us George Murphy and Daoirí Farrell; CLONDALKIN Rugby Club continued their impressive league form with a dominant 41-10 victory over North Kildare securing their fifth consecutive league win and closing the gap on leaders Coolmine to just two points North Kildare started the match brightly in Clondalkin taking an early lead with a well-struck penalty Clondalkin responded in style with some excellent attacking rugby North Kildare refused to back down and applied sustained pressure on Clondalkin’s defensive line before eventually scoring a try of their own the halftime score stood at a narrow 12-10 in favor of Clondalkin Clondalkin regained control through a moment of opportunism A loose ball popped out of a ruck and landed in the hands of captain Mikey Russell who sprinted from the halfway line to score under the posts This pivotal moment gave Clondalkin a surge of confidence Karl Jebb showed his finishing ability on the wing while substitute Neil Finlay capped off a well-worked team move with another try Michael Russell then provided a moment of brilliance with an audacious offload to set up Niall Nolan for yet another score Clondalkin rounded off their emphatic performance with a seventh try as Simon King powered over from a 5m pushover scrum This result marks Clondalkin’s fifth consecutive league win and with Coolmine suffering a defeat to Longford leaves them just two points behind the league leaders With both teams set to face off in the final game of the season Clondalkin now has a golden opportunity to claim the league title Johnson Laurence (Larry) (15th February 2025) (Clondalkin and late of Bluebell) suddenly at home surrounded by his loving family: Devoted husband of Elizabeth (Betty) and loving father of Audrey Larry will be very sadly missed by his loving wife Monastery Road Funeral Mass on Friday, please click on the following link: https://churchmedia.tv/church-of-the-immaculate-heart-of-mary-rowlagh AFTER losing two of their first three league games before Christmas winning their last five matches and just pipping Clontarf RFC to get into the final two While finals day across all divisions is traditionally held at the one location Greystones RFC and Clon came out 10-5 winners in the Leinster Schools Youth League Division Four Final Greystones had got the better of Clondalkin in Baldonnel Farm early in the season but suffered a reverse in early February when Clondalkin visited Dr Hickey Park Both teams knew that they’d have to be at their best to lift the cup A great turnout of Clondalkin supporters and families While Greystones had the better of the early exchanges Clondalkin soon found their feet and took the lead through a searing break from winger Cillian Malone although the difficult conversion was missed but luckily the conversion was also missed to leave the game evenly poised at 5-5 Clondalkin had to absorb a lot of pressure but dominant tackles from the likes of Cormac Fogarty Conor McLindon and Malone and multiple jackal penalties won by Tom Flynn kept the hosts at bay Greystones thought they had scored just before half time but heroic last ditch covering from McLindon and Flynn saw the ball held up over the line and possession returned to Clondalkin helping to see them safely to half time still level The second half started much as the first had ended with Greystones having the majority of possession but being thwarted by Clondalkin’s aggressive defence When the Greystones out half intercepted a loose Clondalkin pass 40 metres out but speed and determination from the Clondalkin defence and big hits again from Ryan Kelly McLindon and Fogarty kept Greystones at bay Clondalkin managed to move the ball down the pitch with a series of penalties Malone must have thought he was in again when he had the ball a few metres out but was stopped by a fantastic tackle by the Greystones fullback leaving Malone with a dead leg that would result in his substitution a few minutes later As the second half went on and the pressure increased Clondalkin kept their heads while searching for the decisive score A penalty on the ’22 was tapped quickly by out half and captain Tadhg O’Loughlin who sent centre McLindon away down the narrow side to get over to make the score 10-5 The game was still on the line with a few minutes to go Greystones with possession but a long way from the try line Replacement prop Casey Quinn strengthened the scrum with Clondalkin winning possession against the head but a fumble led to another Greystones scrum and the referee calling ‘last play’ another massive Clondalkin scrum gave them possession back and the team and squad erupted when scrum half Archie McGann gleefully kicked the ball off the park to end the match All that was left was for O’Loughlin to lead his men up to collect their winners’ medals and the trophy It has been a remarkable season for the squad who grew from 15 to 35 in number since September and they’re not finished yet – a cup quarter final against Seapoint
