Picture: David Creedon A 200th anniversary commemoration event will focus on 11 ships which set sail from Cobh with more than 2,000 ‘peasants’ mainly from North Cork but some from South Limerick who were chosen to settle in the Ontario wilderness Known as the 'Peter Robinson Settler Emigration Scheme' named after the British colonial administrator in Canada it is estimated there are now more than 100,000 descendants of these first settlers living in Ontario The aim of the scheme was to help alleviate the severe poverty of the Irish families who travelled while also promoting settlements in Canada.  Most of those who made the journey were part of family groups and nobody over the age of 45 was eligible.  If you are interested in this article then no doubt you will enjoy exploring the various history collections and content in our history hub. It eventually found Leo Gaxha, who looked poised to score his fourth goal in three matches, only to be denied by a goal-line clearance from John O’Donovan. Shortly after, Eoin Kenny, operating from the right flank with Gaxha shifted centrally, snapped a quick effort inside the area, though Cobh goalkeeper Timothy Martin remained untroubled. At the opposite end, Cobh winger Luka Le Bervet tried his luck twice, but both attempts were comfortably claimed by Dundalk goalkeeper Peter Cherrie. In between that, Keogh bent a free-kick narrowly wide after Aodh Dervin had been brought down on the edge of the area by O’Donovan. The half drew to a close without a breakthrough, though Keogh’s ball across the face of goal briefly had Cobh scrambling. Still, the sides went in at the interval with the scoreline untouched. The second half sparked into life when Keogh’s corner from the right was punched clear by Martin, falling kindly to Vinnie Leonard inside the area. The midfielder took aim, only to see his effort blocked out by a Cobh defender. Moments later, Harry Groome threaded a clever pass through to Dean Ebbe, who escaped the clutches of Cian Coleman and unleashed a low, angled strike—Martin once again equal to the task with a save. The breakthrough finally arrived on 56 minutes, and though it came with a stroke of misfortune for the visitors, the home faithful erupted with joy. Keogh sent in a threatening delivery, and in his attempt to clear, Hakkinen inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, igniting wild celebrations at Oriel. Eager to double their advantage, Gaxha blasted high and wide from distance just after the hour mark, before Keogh again turned provider—his pinpoint cross met by the head of Ebbe, whose effort was expertly tipped around the post by Martin. Substitute Keith Ward then spurned a promising chance, firing over after being teed up by fellow sub Andy Paraschiv. The crowd nearly celebrated a second when Eoin Kenny side-footed wide from Gaxha’s dazzling setup, with much of home crowd believing that he had made it 2-0. Keogh tested Martin once more with a stinging low drive, but it was straight at the keeper. At the other end, Cherrie had to remain alert, diving to his right to keep out Barry Coffey’s header—a warning that Cobh were still a threat. In the end, the equaliser never came. Dundalk held firm to extend their unbeaten run to nine matches, claiming an eighth victory in the process and cementing their place at the top of the First Division table at the close of the opening round of fixtures. Cobh Ramblers' Niall O'Keeffe wins the ball from Finn Harps' Patrick Ferry at St Colman's Park. Picture: Eddie O'Hare The Rams are also out to extend their winning streak to four games following recent victories over UCD This will be the biggest test of the season for Cobh especially with just four points separating the two teams going into Friday’s meeting The Ramblers got themselves in this position by defeating Finn Harps 3-1 last week at St Colman’s Park McDermott’s side hit the ground running and they led 2-0 at the breakthrough goals from David Bosnjak and Barry Coffey Cian Bargary extended their advantage within minutes of the restart and the visitors pulled one back in the 66th minute through Conor Tourish Harps threw caution to the wind late on in a bid to get a second goal and force a frantic finish Cobh buckled down in response and a defence marshalled by Brendeán Frahill dug-in to secure the three points Bosnjak stole the headlines after getting a goal and an assist on the night and McDermott made sure to single the forward out for praise while speaking to the media “Bossy [Bosnjak] is a really talented boy – a really talented boy when he is on his game,” he said and he could be a top performer in this league for a long time “But he is working hard in training every day and I thought he was excellent for that first 60 minutes.”  Cobh Ramblers' Cian Bargary celebrates his goal against Finn Harps Picture: Eddie O'HareThe forward has hit the back of the net four times this season between two different competitions including a late brace that knocked Cork City out of the Munster Senior Cup at St Colman’s Park The striker is one of those that the coach is looking at as a source of goals and that variety could be vital in season-defining games and the Seagulls took the three points on offer last March at the Carlisle Grounds Ramblers went to Wicklow that night aiming to preserve their unbeaten start to the season and it looked like their record was saved when Cian Coleman scored from a corner after Billy O’Neill turned in a free-kick with the underside of the crossbar Cobh pushed for a late winner and that gave room for a Bray counter-attack and at the end of that came a penalty in the dying seconds Max Murphy stepped up and made it 2-1 in the fifth minute of time added in and the whistle went just seconds after the restart and things got worse when McDermott’s side stumbled to defeats to Wexford and Dundalk in the following weeks The Seagulls gave gone unbeaten since that night with seven successive victories recorded in the league and 16 goals tallied during that period and the coach is determined to make up for the defeat in the reverse fixture “It is probably the only game where we haven’t shown up ourselves – the Bray game,” he said The next game was Wexford and we had a man sent off inside 15 minutes and that put us behind and then we go to Dundalk which is a tough place to go it was the one game that we just did not show up So I am looking forward to the game next week  Cobh have it in their locker to get results when it matters the most They made that known by defeating a free-scoring Athlone Town outfit at St Colman’s Park in March Now it is all about beating a genuine title challenger at a key point in the season surrounded by his loving family and in the loving care of all the Bon Secours Hospital Predeceased by his parents Michael and Lil and his sister Rose (McMahon) Beloved husband of Eithne (née Wright) and much loved father of Sonya Michael will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Michael will repose at Cahill’s Funeral Home Newtown Rd. Picture: David Creedon the club – not yet knowing fully the extent of their fate under FC32 That positivity took a hefty hit last Friday with a disappointing defeat at home to Wexford FC but Wexford found a leveller before the break and were able to turn the tide early in the second half when captain Shane Griffin was sent off and Wexford awarded a penalty “I thought once we scored the goal we had four or five chances in the first half If you don’t take your chances you’re allowing them to get back into it When you’ve got a bit of momentum and you’re creating chances you’ve got to take them but I thought the penalty definitely has an influence on the game.” Was the red card that followed Alan Patchell’s decision to award a penalty justified “At the time I thought no,” McDermott said “I thought he just got inside him and he was leaning on him I haven’t seen the video so I can’t say.”  John O’Donovan was brought on with Jason Abbott the unlucky withdrawal as Cobh looked to find a solution after falling to 10 men “I think you saw when we went to three at the back and four across the middle and two up top “We were trying to get players through the middle that could still defend so we had to go four across and sacrifice,” he added I think it gave us a platform where we actually created chances in the second half as well “I thought we played some of the better football in the second half when we were down to 10 men Ramblers next game is against league leaders Dundalk – and it’s one McDermott is looking forward to in particular then to go to the team at the top of the table Wexford's Dean Larkin heads the ball clear from Cobh's Cian Murphy Picture: David CreedonWith so much uncertainty surrounding the club the media present were instructed to keep post-match reaction on the game itself rather than any off-field activity McDermott was also unwilling to comment on the performance of Mikie Rowe with the former Cobh Ramblers winger winning and converting the penalty that allowed Wexford to move in front I’ll let their manager talk about their players.” David Crotty, Douglas Hall, George Nunn, Cobh Ramblers Cobh Ramblers are through to the Munster Senior Cup final following 3-1 come from behind victory over Douglas Hall at Moneygourney Mick McDermott and his players will now wait for the winner of the bout between Rockmount and defending champions Waterford FC with their match-up set to be played next month in Whitechurch The Ramblers went into the game looking to extend an eight game unbeaten run in all competitions and they had the worst possible start as Brian Holland gave Douglas Hall an early lead Nolan Evers equalised before the break and goals from birthday boy Jason Abbott and Oscar Ahern made sure of the win The Ramblers are now one game away from winning the trophy for the third time in four seasons following victories over Cork City in 2022 and 2023 this brings an end to a memorable campaign that saw the club get the better of Temple United The Munster Senior League side were determined to give nothing away on home soil and record another knock-out victory after reaching the semi-finals of the FAI Intermediate Cup and the Donie Forde Trophy decider Cobh were steady from kick-off with a team that retained just three players from last Friday’s victory over Athlone Town at St Colman’s Park and Dale Holland kept their places and the group was led by Abbott What came through early on was the tried and tested Douglas Hall formula involving long-balls and making set-pieces count with Ben Holland turning in a corner at the near post in the 12th minute The Ramblers actually struggled to assert themselves in their bid to get back into the game It took a corner at the end of the first half to get them back into the game and Evers was on target with a bullet header in the 42nd minute It was 1-1 at the break and as the first half wore on so McDermott changed his team by bringing on Niall O’Keeffe and Waterford native Shane Griffin during a five window after the hour mark and it started with Cormac Kelly bursting through and having a low shot stopped by Cathal O’Hanlon and a curling effort by the midfielder went straight into the hands of Daniel Moynihan celebrates his 12th minute goal against Cobh Ramblers. It was end-to-end with both teams getting forward and creating chances Barry Coffey thought he created the winner in the 80th minute but the resulting shot was scrambled off the goal-line This was followed by Abbott firing in on the edge of the area in the 86th minute with a strike that went well beyond the reach of the Douglas Hall goalkeeper Subs: Michael Hammett for Nolan (75); The return of 25 points from a possible 27 is the most any side in the Lilywhites' history have ever managed – surpassing the 23 from 27 that the teams of 1969/70 and 2015 accumulated. That leaves Ciarán Kilduff’s side well placed for a potential instant return to the Premier Division next season. Dundalk had to do things the hard way, however, after struggling to break down Mick McDermott’s visitors before Hakkinen turned the ball into his own net 10 minutes into the second half. The home side bossed the early proceedings with Harry Groome and Leo Gaxha having early efforts blocked before John O’Donovan kept the game scoreless when he cleared off the line from Gaxha on 17 minutes after a well worked move orchestrated by Sean Keogh. After Eoin Kenny forced a simple save from Timo Martin, Cobh threatened for the first time on 24 minutes when Luke Le Bervet fired straight at Peter Cherrie. Keogh then went close twice before the break as the sides went off scoreless at the break. O’Donovan then made another big block to deny Dundalk the breakthrough within a minute of the restart when he got his body in the way of Vinnie Leonard’s shot from Keogh’s corner. Keogh then had a big role to play in the breakthrough goal on 55 minutes when he drove past Nolan Evers on the right before drilling a low cross across the six yard box which crept into the net off Hakkinen. The Republic of Ireland U19 international was again providing the threat 11 minutes later when his cross picked out Dean Ebbe, whose downward header had to be turned behind by Martin. Keith Ward and Kenny then had good attempts off target before Keogh stung the palms of Martin with a right foot shot on 78 minutes as Dundalk looked to seal the points. The visitors did have a couple of late attempts to level through Barry Coffey and substitute David Bosnjak but both were dealt with easily by Cherrie. Dundalk: Peter Cherrie; Conor O’Keeffe, Mayowa Animasahun (Sean McHale HT), Vinnie Leonard, Sean Keogh; Aodh Dervin, Harry Groome (Andy Paraschiv 71); Eoin Kenny (Gbemi Arubi 85), Leo Gaxha, Daryl Horgan; Dean Ebbe (Keith Ward 71). Elsewhere, Bray Wanderers had a record-breaking 2-1 win at home to Treaty United. Richard Ferizaj became the Wicklow side's youngest ever goal scorer, then captain Kilian Cantwell produced a wonder goal, only his second ever for the club, to secure the win. Kerry FC got three over Athlone Town in an emphatic home win. Luke Palmer opened scoring for Kerry with a header in Mounthawk Park. A second for Palmer and Ryan Kelliher adding to the scoring for the Tralee based side put them firmly out of reach for Athlone. It was all level at Ferrycarrig Park between Wexford Town and Finn Harps with two-a-piece. Wexford led at the break with a Mikie Rowe touch in the 11th minute. Dara McGuinness levelled things up straight after the break before Tony McNamee put the visitors ahead. Calum Flynn levelled scoring again with six minutes left to play. © RTÉ 2025. unbeaten start to the season came to an end with a 2-1 defeat to Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds It came down to a Max Murphy penalty in the fifth minute of injury time after a foul by Timoty Martin That decided a game that saw Billy O’Neill give the home side the lead from a free-kick at the start of the second half and David Bosnjak equalising in the 62nd minute It was a frustrating defeat for Mick McDermott and his players a group that tallied 13- goals in their last five outings the coach tinkered with George Nunn replacing Bosnjak from the group that defeated Athlone Town last week at St Colman’s Park Cobh started by pressing high and trying to pass their way into space Bray tried to break when they got the ball back in the 7th minute and John O’Donovan calmly broke this up Cian Bargary then got around Conor Knight and the winger saw a cross to the back post headed wide by Barry Coffey The Seagulls put together a similar move seconds later and Killian Cantell knocked this into the hands of Timothy Martin The Cobh goalkeeper followed that up by standing his ground and dealing with an O’Neill shot after Cian Doyle broke the ball down to the forward in the 21st minute these moments became rarer and rarer as both defences held firm and stopped any clear route into the area The Ramblers tried their luck from distance on one occasion and Waterford’s Shane Griffin hit the ball high and out of play It was 0-0 at the break and Bray took the lead in the 52nd minute when an O’Neill free-kick came off the crossbar and snuck over the goalline McDermott immediately reacted by replacing Nunn and Niall O’Keeffe with Jason Abbott and David Bosnjak Bray Wanderers' James Corcoran makes a save against Cobh Ramblers Picture: Moya NolanThe rejigged team managed to win a corner within seconds of the double substitution and the referee blew for a free-out as Cian Murphy tried to get to the ball Cian Coleman broke the ball down to Bosnjak for a simple finish in the 61st minute The Seagulls retaliated with a close-range strike by Conor Knight and Martin easily stopped this Waterford’s Shane Griffin went for goal with a free-kick and Jimmy Corcoran punched the ball out for a corner that came to nothing Bray thought they scored with their next opportunity but this was taken off the goal-line by O’Donovan in the 73rd minute The Seagulls won it in Photo: Getty The ill-starred liner Titanic sank exactly 113 years ago today, and now the British Titanic Society has voted to hold its convention next year in Ireland. Cobh, then known as Queenstown, was the last port of call for the White Star Line’s new steamship in 1912, where the maiden voyager took on 113 third-class passengers and a smattering of first class. More than two-thirds of the Irish aboard, including many crew, died in the disaster. Meeting in Liverpool last weekend, members of the British Titanic Society voted heavily in favour of visiting Cobh, Co Cork, next year, where the overall spend will be worth hundreds of thousands of euro to the local economy. The port, just east of Cork city, fought off other candidate venues, including Alnwick, Northumberland, the Potteries home of Captain EJ Smith, of the lost vessel, and a proposal to hold the convention on the SS Rotterdam, on a sailing from Southampton. The society has previously stayed at the Commodore Hotel, in Cobh, with a side-trip to the Old Head of Kinsale to visit the museum dedicated to those lost with the Cunard liner Lusitania, which was torpedoed off the Irish coast by a German submarine during World War I. The 110th anniversary of the Lusitania sinking will be marked by ceremonies in Cobh and Kinsale early next month. The 2026 convention could make a trip to Youghal, home of heroic Titanic able seaman Jack Foley, who captained a lifeboat with 50 souls in the wake of the sinking. The East Cork town has a public memorial to its famous son. Foley’s broad Irish vowels were misunderstood when his details were being written into Titanic’s crew manifest, and he was mistakenly entered as being from York. After surviving the sinking in No 4 lifeboat, Foley found he had the ship’s keys from the Titanic in his pocket, and brought them home – only for them to be disposed of by his wife Mary, who liked to keep a tidy house. His chagrin is likely to be shared by his many descendants in England, including the Inns, Askew and Hammond families, since a single Titanic locker key sold for £85,000 (€98,500). An auction of Titanic items takes place later this month in Devizes, Wiltshire, where the lots include a letter written on ship’s stationery and taken off the ship at Cobh at an estimate of £40,000-£60,000. First-class American passenger Archibald Gracie, who later wrote a book – The Truth About Titanic – writes to a friend: “It is a fine ship, but I shall await my journey’s end before I pass judgment on her.” Gracie survived on an upturned collapsible boat and gave evidence to the US inquiry, which passed judgment that Titanic was going too fast. Also up for auction are original photographs of Titanic officers Charles Lightoller, the most senior survivor, and JG Boxhall. Barry brings an impressive pedigree, having spent his youth career at Celtic FC, where he developed through their ranks and gained valuable experience. Barry has also represented the Republic of Ireland at various underage levels, showcasing his talent on the international stage. During a loan spell with Cliftonville FC in the Irish League, Barry displayed his versatility and attacking prowess, making an instant impact by scoring three goals in his first three appearances. His performances earned rave reviews, with Cliftonville supporters praising his energy, creativity, and eye for goal. Barry’s move to Cork City FC in 2021 saw him further develop into a key player. In 2022, he was City’s top scorer with 14 league goals, playing a vital role in their successful First Division title campaign and promotion to the Premier Division. In the 2024 season in which City again earned promotion from the First Division, Barry recorded 6 goals and 4 assists across 30 appearances, further highlighting his ability to make a difference in crucial moments. Cobh Ramblers’ manager Mick McDermott shared his enthusiasm about the signing: “Barry is a talented player that I know from my time in the Irish League; when the option to bring him to Cobh became a possibility, we acted immediately to bring him in. There was a lot of interest from other clubs, so we are happy that Barry chose Cobh for this next step in his career.” Barry Coffey expressed his excitement about the move: “I’m delighted to be here. It’s a big season ahead for the club, and I want to be part of that and help the team do well with goals and assists. We have a great, strong squad and an experienced manager and backroom team to drive us forward. I’m really looking forward to the season starting and hopefully making it one to remember.” With Barry’s talent and experience, coupled with a determined squad, Cobh Ramblers are ready to make 2025 a season to remember. Picture: Eddie O'Hare Mick McDermott and his players have started the year with a victory and two draws which leaves them fourth in the table going into tonight's game The Ramblers began with a measure of the east Cork side's ambitions Things started well with Cian Murphy getting his second league goal of the season on the half hour mark The Students never gave up in their search of an equaliser and Eanna Clancy took the chance when it came at the 89th minute The full-time meant put Cobh at fourth in the table Dundalk are leading the pack with nine points from three games after meeting Athlone Town Longford will go into the game looking to establish some semblance of stability in a season that has yet to take off from a basement finish in their group in the Leinster Senior Cup to a rough start to the league season Bray Wanderers compounded their frustrations on opening weekend by defeating their provincial rivals 1-0 at Bishopsgate Cobh Ramblers' Samuel Bellis in action against UCD Picture: Moya NolanAn own goal was ultimately the difference and Longford did not have a chance to make up for the defeat with their next game as a trip to Wexford had to be postponed over the state of the pitch at Ferrycarrig Park This all forms part of narrative centred on decline following the club's last stint in the League of Ireland Premier Division The club went up through the play-offs and straight back down where they slowly fell down the pecking order in the second tier of the Irish football pyramid with Longford going 12 league games without a win at the start of the year They broke the streak by defeating Kerry FC but there was no immediate rush of blood to make up for lost time The realities of the league make this an even harder task and this is something Cobh know far too tell after years of boom-to-bust cycles after challenging and falling short There’s now money during a time of increased interest in the League of Ireland something that threatens to create a divide Cobh will want to stay on the right side of the schism and that means getting results and staying in contention for promotion We would like to clarify recent developments regarding called on Cork County Council to outline an emergency access plan for the Great Island of Cobh in the event of its one and only connecting bridge at Belvelly being damaged Speaking at Monday’s full meeting of Cork County Council Cllr Rasmussen said the reality of the 200 year old bridge becoming impassible has never properly been discussed He said: “Thousands of motorists and tourists use this bridge daily What would happen if the bridge was taken out of action “We all know that a new road and bridge need to be built we all sit and wait for the road to be open and there’s huge delays there’s no plan to deal with this,” added the Cobh councillor Mr Rasmussen suggested that the army should be involved in any emergency plan put in place as the use of military pontoon bridges may be necessary if the bridge is ever taken out of commission “With their expertise with pontoon bridges I’m sure something could be done,” said Cllr Rasmussen “My concern is that if we don’t begin discussion thousands of people will be marooned and discommoded,” he added Cllr Rasmussen also asked the council executive to provide details on how often the bridge is checked by engineers and when the last check was completed said the Belvelly Bridge is “definitely showing signs of fatigue” He said: “I know it might be inspected every now and again said that even the slightest accident on the Fota Road (R624) can cause the entire island of Cobh to be backed up for two or three hours She said: “The reality is a plan is going to take at least ten or 15 years to put in place “It’s a multi-million euro project and at present we’re getting grant aid of about €150k at a time to carry out surveys that are taking a very long time to do,” added Cllr Sheppard In a written response to Cllr Rasmussen’s motion Niall Healy said: “In the event of unforeseen circumstances arising which could give rise to an extended R624 road closure thereby impeding access/egress to/from Great Island “Responses would likely be required from Port of Cork as well as other associated groups and agencies “The council will request it to be referred to the Regional Steering Group for Major Emergencies take many positives from the game Daniel Okwute put in a great shift to silence his critics scoring a great goal to put the side 2-1 up More minutes for Ryan Kelliher meant it was evident that his start was coming soon Cobh sat in third place in the league table ahead of the game as they chased Bray Wanderers Friday’s defeat meant they were back down to tenth but a win over the Rams could jump them to eighth depending on results around the other grounds on the evening The last game between the two sides ended in a draw in St with Kerry FC feeling begrudged after Carl Mujaguzi seemed to be taken down inside the area It was a high-paced game with both sides happy with the shared points in the end it was hoped that the teams could be separated at the end of this one FIRST HALFIt was a cagey opening to the game the Ramblers would take the lead through Barry Coffey A cross from the right wing found Coffey free inside the area to head home and put the Rams in the driver’s seat early on Kerry FC had the perfect opportunity to go back level when a free kick delivered into the near post was headed just wide by Niall Brookwell It felt as if Kerry could conjure up a few more chances just like this they would be level again in no time whatsoever Cobh were well in control and had a couple more chances to double their lead Jason Abbott’s snapshots went wide of the target then Tim-Oliver Hiemer cleared a goal-line scramble for a corner Luka Le Bervet was on defensive duties in the twenty-third minute when Daniel Okwute looked to be through on goal but a fantastic last-stitch tackle from Le Bervet was enough to steer away the danger Daniel Okwute was in on the action once again as he made space to shoot on his left foot outside the area but dragged slightly and was held with ease by Cobh shot-stopper Timothy Martin and a towering Cian Coleman header was saved brilliantly by Tim-Oliver Hiemer Coffey was there to make sure of the chance and headed in from close range to give Kerry FC an uphill battle going into the second half Luke Palmer had a shot blocked that went out for a corner which on another day would have halved the deficit Ryan Kelliher got his first taste of the action just after the hour mark when a low first-timed shot forced a save out of Martin that went out for a corner which on that occasion unfortunately led to nothing a double chance came for Kerry FC as Luke Palmer and Alex Dunne were denied in quick succession Jason Abbott had Cobh’s first real chance of the second half when his shot inside the eighteen-yard box dragged just wide of the post giving Kerry FC a chance to breathe a sigh of relief there were massive question marks for Kerry FC as they thought the ball had crossed the line directly from a Joe Adams corner but when we were able to get a closer look it was evident the ball had indeed crossed the line Everyone in Mounthawk Park was shocked the referee had not blown his whistle—maybe besides anyone with a Cobh Ramblers crest on their chest—and play continued Daniel Okwute hit the crossbar from a tough angle The game went on with a couple more half-chances for both sides but Cobh were able to see out the win and take all three points back to Cork who can put the long week behind them as they go back on the road this coming Friday when they take on Bray Wanderers in the Carlisle Grounds Cobh Ramblers' Dale Holland races past Longford Town's Osaze Irhue, during their SSE Airtricity League First Division clash, at St Colman's Park. Picture: David Keane Mick McDermott and his players will travel to Donegal with two wins and two draws recorded this season and that leaves the team second in the table Last week was transformative for the group as they needed to win against a struggling Longford Town side at St Colman’s Park while sitting in fourth place Cobh were also out to bounce back from frustrating draws with Kerry FC and UCD and everything came together in the form of a 5-0 victory The Ramblers sprinted into a 2-0 lead with Samuel Bellis scoring from close range and Waterford native Shane Griffin curling in a free-kick inside five minutes A Barry Coffey brace either side of half-time extended their advantage before David Bosnjak rounded out the win Dundalk conceding twice to Treaty United at Oriel Park made it a perfect evening as Cobh jumped up to second place McDermott knows that there’s still a bit to go before his team is a finished product “I thought we could have got a few more but it takes time to gel as I say,” the coach said Cobh Ramblers' Shane Griffin is congratulated by his team-mates after scoring with a well-struck free kick against Longford Town during their SSE Airtricity League First Division clash at St Colman's Park.“We signed 16 or 17 new players and even for us We changed our system tonight and it didn’t affect us in any way very coachable players that work hard every week That’s all it is at the minute and we’re working through these weeks to get our best formation and system Eventually we will gel together and hopefully we’ll get more performances like that.”  Cobh will try and keep the good times going against a Finn Harps side that is second from bottom with just one point collected this season That came from last Friday’s scored draw with UCD at Belfield with Gavin Hodkins netting the equaliser at the start of the second half That helped break a streak of results that saw defeats to Kerry FC and Treaty United on the road This is a reality check for a group that pushed for the play-offs last term only to fall short in the final few weeks of the year after failing to record a league win during their last five games The Ramblers were one team that did lose to Darren Murphy’s side during the run-in and that effectively killed their chances of a top-five finish Cobh Ramblers FC are delighted to announce the signing of former Shelbourne defender Shane Griffin for the 2025 League of Ireland season The 30 year old joins Ramblers after three years with Shelbourne where he helped the Dublin side win the League of Ireland Premier Division title last season He spent time at St Pat’s and Cork City prior to this The Carrigaline native also spent time with Reading FC in England and has been capped by the Republic of Ireland up to U21 level Shane had this to say following the announcement “I’m delighted to be signing for the club When I spoke with the manager he told me of the plans to progress the club and that’s something that I’m looking forward to being a part of My aim is to contribute on the pitch and be successful and also to help the young talented players within the group.” Manager Michael McDermott also gave his eager to help us build something special Cobh Ramblers' Cian Murphy celebrates his goal with David Bosnjak and John O'Donovan against Athlone Town during the SSE Airtricity First Division game at St Colman's Park Cobh Ramblers made it three consecutive wins in the League of Ireland First Division by defeating promotion rivals Athlone Town 2-0 at St Colman’s Park It took a 58th-minute goal from Cian Murphy to break the deadlock as Mick McDermott’s players were repeatedly undone by the performance of former Cork City goalkeeper Matthew Connor Waterford native Shane Griffin wrapped things up in injury time and the result keeps the gap between Cobh and league leaders Dundalk at two points Cobh Ramblers' Cian Coleman outjumps the Athlone Town defence Picture: Eddie O'HareThe Ramblers went into the game looking to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to eight games and their night started with a hasty attempt by Waterford’s Shane Griffin Athlone then broke and a Kyle O’Connor cross was headed out to Murphy by John O’Donovan The striker broke with pace and set up Barry Coffey for a neat strike that Matthew Connor pushed out for a corner that came to nothing with all the action compressed inside the first 10 minutes and the tempo continued with David McDaid trying his luck and seeing the ball roll narrowly wide The Ramblers immediately wrestled control back from their midlands rivals and they should have taken the lead when Coffey twisted into space at the near post with 29 minutes on the clock The midfielder crossed but there was no one there and Athlone cleared their lines before Bosnjak could run in The chance to go ahead before the break fell to Coffey after the midfielder collected a pass on the penalty spot from Cian Bargary Matthew Connor dealt with this by standing firm and the resulting corner was knocked away by the Athlone defence The game restarted with McDaid going for goal and hitting the crossbar at the Liam McMahon Stand Another period of Cobh pressure followed and out of that Coffey played the striker through and the shot from the tightest of angles went in via the far post despite Matthew Connor getting a hand to it Athlone brought on Gideon Tetteh in an attempt to get back in the game and the winger marked his arrival by firing wide at the 70th minute The space vacated by the advance made room for Waterford’s Shane Griffin to get in and get what turned out to be the winner Athlone had nothing left in the tank after struggling to break down a Cobh defence marshalled by Cian Coleman There’s no time for Cobh to dwell on the victory as McDermott’s side will be in action on Monday against Douglas Hall in the semi-finals of the Munster Senior Cup Barbara O'Connell with one of the many cups she won as a coach this year. who combines her coaching with working as a soccer columnist with The Echo She has played and coached in the game for over 30 years make her a fantastic addition and asset to the club For the Wilton and former Cork City women’s player this is a wonderful opportunity to further her coaching experience She is also currently coaching with the Cork schoolboys and schoolgirls underage programs and has been with these sides for the last number of years This is a real coup for Ramblers as O’Connell is one of the most respected coaches in the Country and she will attract some of the best young girls to play for her “I am delighted to take on this new role as it gives me a chance to coach in the League of Ireland,” Barbara said “Although I’ve been involved in the game for over 30 years managing in the League of Ireland is a new challenge for me "The club look to be doing things the correct way looking after their players and with a huge emphasis on player development and I hope to play a key role in this “ This opportunity will also give me a chance to expand my coaching experience in the League I can’t wait to get stuck into my new role as it’s exciting time for both the club and myself,” O’Connell added is delighted to have O'Connell involved with the club He has known her for a number of years and is well aware of her coaching philosophy Holland also stated that with Cobh putting a senior women’s team in the League of Ireland in the near future this appointment will be a stepping stone for O’Connell and her players “I am delighted that Barbara has agreed to become Head of our U19 Women’s team,” Richie said “Her knowledge of the female game in the area made her a stand-out candidate With the senior women’s team on the horizon I feel it’s an exciting time for everyone involved.”  O'Connell took charge of her first game last Sunday when the U19 girls welcomed Cork City at St Colman’s Park “I urge all the people for Cobh to down and support the girls when they play this team is another important milestone for the club." Cobh Ramblers' Barry Coffey keeps possession under pressure from Cork City's Darragh Crowley and Rio Shipston during their Munster Senior Cup clash at St Colman's Park A  brace late on from David Bosnjak saw Cobh Ramblers defeat Cork City the Munster Senior Cup quarter-final at St Coman’s Park The Rebel Army were leading at half-time through a close-range Ruairi Keating strike but and Tim Clancy’s side were stunned by their near rivals with the winner going in at the 89th minute The Ramblers will now face Passage AFC or Douglas Hall in the next round with their game scheduled for next Wednesday night The longer journey was only part of the night at St Colman’s Park with Cobh fielding ten former Cork City players in their starting XI Richie Holland was also on the sidelines with the home side who are listed as one of the favourites for the First Division title this year The general feeling was that Mick McDermott’s players had a point to prove and they started by closing down and stopping Bernardo Piexoto Couto and Cathal O’Sullivan from finding space The first opening actually fell to Cobh and Barry Coffey fired wide in the 10th minute City responded by putting together a neat passing move that went to O’Sullivan and the midfielder smacked the ball off the crossbar The would-be scorer went on to create the opening goal with his perfectly placed cross bundled in by Keating with 32 minutes on the clock City stole possession at the restart and set up Sean Maguire for a long-distance shot that was spilled and quickly gathered by Timothy Martin Cork City players celebrating after scoring against Cobh Ramblers Picture: David Keane. The Rebel Army took their slender 1-0 lead into the break and the second half began with Cobh replacing Waterford native Shane Griffin and John O’Donovan with Samuel Bellis and Luka Le Bervet There was an immediate injection of pace into the team but clear-cut chances proved rare Dale Holland did have a header clawed out for a corner by Tein Troost and the resulting set-piece came to nothing at the 65th minute The former Netherlands underage goalkeeper was also on hand to deal with a tame Bellis shot during this rally by the home side City soaked up the pressure and won a corner that was hit just over the bar by O’Sullivan at the Liam McMahon Stand The Ramblers came through this spell unscathed and equalised with a side-footed Bosnjak finish inside the area with just over five minutes left to play another one wearing claret and blue after a stint at Turner’s Cross Le Bervet was the creator and Bosnjak kept his composure to send his club through to the semi-finals for the first time since 2023 Tense moments during the Cobh Ramblers and UCD clash recently An 80th-minute Cian Murphy penalty was the difference as Cobh Ramblers came from behind at Ballybofey The striker’s third goal of the league settled a tense tie that opened up with Patrick Ferry scoring for the home side and Barry Coffey equalising from right in front of the posts Mick McDermott remain in second place after making the long trip to Donegal and their unbeaten run in all competitions has stretched to seven games especially after Cian Coleman kicked a Gavin Hodgins cross to an unmarked Ferry and the forward fired in with six minutes on the clock but nothing materialised against a defence that smothered space and did not allow a clear sight at goal Dale Holland did try his luck from distance and this chance went just over the bar during a promising spell for the visitors to Finn Park The Ramblers dug in and got the equaliser from a corner in the 27th minute with Coffey scrambling the ball over something helped by Jonas Häkkinen coming forward and adding numbers in midfield Harps responded by breaking up the flow of the game with niggling fouls that frustrated McDermott’s players Very little separated the two teams at the break and the second half began with a Tony McNamee free-kick getting knocked into the hands of Timothy Martin Harps suddenly started winning the ball in midfield and putting Cobh under real pressure in the final third Ramblers went long when they got the ball back and Coffey was fouled on the edge of the area while trying to collect a pass from Cork native Shane Griffin who scored from a similar position against Longford Town last week stepped up and hit the wall on the hour mark with the resulting free McDermott reacted to the end-to-end flow by making an attacking change with Cian Bargary and David Bosnjak replacing O’Keeffe and Samuel Bellis The fresh energy was rewarded with the penalty which Murphy sent straight down the middle Max Johnston came on shortly after for Harps and the substitute almost equalised with his first touch A goal-kick was given and Cobh relaxed having secured their third league win of the league season Peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Cork University Hospital much loved daughter of Harry and the late Elma (nee Keating) and dearly loved Cian Coleman of Cobh Ramblers celebrates after scoring his side's first goal against Treaty United at Markets Field Two injury-time goals from David Bosnjak and Cian Murphy saw Cobh Ramblers complete the most dramatic of comebacks and defeat Treaty United at the Markets Field in the League of Ireland First Division Mick McDermott’s side were trailing 2-0 going into the 87th minute in Limerick and Cian Coleman pulled one back which ignited a rescue mission that looked well beyond their reach after Richkov Boevi and Lee Devitt gave the home side a deserved cushion Treaty looked to be in control and on their way to their second win of the year after defeating Temple United last January in the Munster Senior Cup Shane Griffin of Cobh Ramblers in action against Evan O'Connor of Treaty United Picture: Michael P Ryan/SportsfileCobh did start fast with an early chance falling to Cian Bargary and he was denied by Corey Chambers in just the second minute Murphy also tried to create something during this rush-of-blood start and Mark Walsh got in the way of the resulting shot with their first opening coming from a Devitt pass to Youssef Mahdy The former UCD and Shelbourne attacker managed to win his team a corner and the set-piece was easily dealt with by the Cobh defence These chances were endemic of a lively game that truly opened up when an unmarked Boevi managed to pick up the ball in an acre of space and fire in with 32 minutes on the clock Richkov Boevi of Treaty United celebrates after scoring his side's first goal against Cobh Ramblers Picture: Michael P Ryan/SportsfileThe Shannonsiders could have doubled their lead at the end of the half instead the ball bobbed wide after a chaotic scramble in front of the posts Cobh had to wait for their first proper sight of goal after the restart and when Dale Holland tried his luck at the 58th minute he saw his effort blocked down on the edge of the area who scored a brace against Cobh during their last league meeting The Ramblers shrugged this off and managed to win a corner which just missed Coleman at the 67th minute Bosnjak was brought on in a bid to turn things around and the forward’s arrival was marked by Devitt scoring from a corner The Ramblers suddenly had nothing to lose and caution was thrown to the wind with time running out Cobh pushed further up the field and Bosnjak was able to get in and get the equaliser and the new signing from Cork City completed the turnaround with a stunning strike Cobh Ramblers' Samuel Bellis is congratulated by Barry Coffey after scoring against Longford Town Two goals inside five minutes from Samuel Bellis and Waterford native Shane Griffin helped Cobh Ramblers blitz Longford Town at St Colman’s Park Barry Coffey got in on the action with a brace and David Bosnjak scored off the bench and the result gives Mick McDermott his first league win on home soil The Ramblers went into the game looking to up the ante after frustrating draws against Kerry FC and UCD and they had a dream start when a Cian Murphy shot was palmed out to Coffey The midfielder’s attempt was cleared to Bellis for a simple tap and Cobh led 1-0 in just the 3rd minute That was followed by a free-kick which Shane Griffin curled into the top right corner at the Liam McMahon stand And it would have been 3-0 at the 11th minute if Harry Halwax did not get to a low attempt from Bellis at the near post Dean George went close to pulling one back for Longford and his header was pushed away by Timothy Martin at the 22nd minute Aaron Doran followed that up by getting a shot away and Jonas Häkkinen got in the way of this on the half-hour mark Waterford’s Shane Griffin crossed to Coffey for a simple header which made it 3-0 with 37 minutes on the clock Dale Holland tried to get in on the action and his rising shot went high and wide before the break The game restarted with Osaze Irhue setting up Doran for a close-range strike inside the area that went harmlessly out of play Cobh Ramblers' Shane Griffin is fouled as he tries to get away from Longford Town's Pharrell Manuel Picture: David Keane.Cobh paid no heed to these advances instead they stuck to a game plan that involved possession and looking for space outside with Coffey getting his second of the night from a low Niall O’Keeffe cross Longford tried to get themselves back in the game with a quadruple substitution designed to inject a fresh sense of energy into a group that was getting out-run and out-played since kick-off McDermott refreshed his team by bringing on Bosnjak This new group slotted in and continued to pin Longford deep into their own half A fifth goal was coming and it arrived when Bosnjak latched onto a pass and fired in with 82 minutes on the clock and this is his second of the league season who will travel to Donegal to play Finn Harps next week Cobh will hold a special public ceremony to mark the 113th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic on Sunday Cobh will hold a George began his career with the Crewe Alexandra academy before joining Chelsea in 2018 signing a professional contract at Stamford Bridge in 2020 George moved to Derby County in 2022 and after a number of loan spells he then spent the 2024 season at HK Kópavogs in the Icelandic top tier George has also been capped for the Republic of Ireland at U19 level Cobh Ramblers' Cian Coleman and UCD's Jake Doyle in action at the UCD Bowl Eanna Clancy struck an 89th-minute goal at Belfield on Friday night to deny Cobh Ramblers what would have been a hard-earned victory over UCD in the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division After following up an opening day triumph away to Treaty United with a scoreless draw against Kerry FC at St Colman’s Park seven days later Cobh were aiming to extend their unbeaten start to this season’s second tier Before inclement weather caused the postponement of their clash with Bray Wanderers at the same venue a week earlier UCD suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Wexford in Belfield on February 14 This meant the Students were expected to fight tooth and nail to pick up their first points of the new campaign but Ramblers more than held their own in the early stages of the contest Samuel Bellis was showing some nice touches in attack while the influence of UCD skipper Ronan Finn – a seven-time Premier Division winner - was largely being curbed Finn did become more prominent as the action progressed but scoring chances at either end of the pitch initially proved to be few and far between Cobh Ramblers' John O'Donovan clears the ball Picture: Moya NolanYet that all changed on the half-hour mark when a free-kick from the right-hand side broke into the path of former Cork City star Cian Murphy who proceeded to drill a low shot to the back of the UCD net A two-time First Division champion with City in 2022 and 2024 prior to joining forces with Cobh in the off-season Murphy’s goal had his current club in the frame for a second consecutive win on the road It was a set-piece from Shane Griffin (whose older namesake was captaining Cobh) that paved the way for the deadlock-breaker from Murphy and he also picked out the Ramblers striker in the box with just six minutes gone after the resumption His eventual shot was blocked by an opposition defender UCD were struggling to pose serious questions for their Leeside counterparts That was until substitute Adam Brennan found himself inside the penalty area on 63 minutes and Ramblers netminder Timothy Martin had to be at his best to turn his subsequent shot at a tight angle behind for a corner Although a long-range effort from UCD midfielder Killian Cailloce drifted narrowly wide of the target Cobh substitute James O’Leary was thwarted by the outstretched hands of Students custodian Kian Moore inside the final-quarter Yet the hosts persevered with their challenge as the final whistle approached and just one minute from the end of normal time Clancy tried his luck from distance and found the bottom right-hand corner of the net to ensure Cobh had to settle for a share of the spoils in the end We’re thrilled to announce the signing of 21-year-old centre-forward Sam Bellis, who
