Images of the projected redevelopment for the Crumlin Shopping Centre Sarah BurkeThu 27 Feb 2025 at 15:49Locals in Crumlin have been saying farewell to the old shopping centre as the building is demolished to make way for a redevelopment of the space by Dunnes Stores Videos and images have circulated online showing the demolition of the site Crumlin Shopping Centre first opened its doors in 1974 with legendary broadcaster Gay Byrne releasing balloons at the launch of the 91-acre site on Crumlin Road the centre was home to around 40 retail units Dunnes Stores was the only retailer remaining and it now plans to redevelop Crumlin Shopping Centre into an anchor store Planning permission for the redevelopment was granted in April last year The demolition of the site has left locals reminiscing about the old shopping centre with one person commenting: “What about Hector Greys Another local described the demolition as “the end of an era” saying it was “great to see the site going to be redeveloped after many years of neglect” Local councillor Daithí Doolan added: “We all want to see this site redeveloped It has been in decline for too long and had become a sorry sight “It is essential the original concerns are honestly addressed and that future plans benefit the wider community “I would strongly encourage the developers to fully engage with local residents and community groups to ensure people’s concerns are listened to and acted upon,” he added Proposals for the redevelopment include space for a shopping centre featuring an off-licence The plans also include 267 bicycle parking spaces The upgraded centre will include a new anchor unit for Dunnes Stores with 150-200 jobs created during the construction phase the new centre will be “capable of meeting the evolving needs of existing tenants and responding to the modern demands of shoppers and retailers” which includes demolishing the current rundown shopping centre is projected to take between 18 to 24 months A planning report by KPMG Future Analytics research consultancy highlighted that the updated proposal "will revitalise the area” According to a retail impact assessment submitted with the proposal the net increase in retail space is expected to generate an annual turnover of €62.9m by 2027 These documents also mention that the smaller retail units have been vacant for over a decade The site has also attracted anti-social behaviour due to its dereliction The shopping centre is served by bus routes 27 with additional bus services planned as part of Bus Connects Planning documents say the proposed development will “revitalise an area that has suffered from constant and sustained dereliction since the post-Celtic Tiger years” Dublin News‘We have issues in Dublin and we need funding to solve them,’ says councillor as he calls for tourism taxA Dublin city councillor has claimed recent remarks by a government minister shows how “out of touch” he is with the reality on the ground in the capital It’s one of three actions on a to-do list that emerged from the People’s Transition Crumlin project about two dozen people gathered in St Agnes’s parish hall in Crumlin They were there for the launch of a report on the results of a project to map the area’s resources and to consult with the people who live there about what the community needs most But “people have more pressing needs on a day-to-day basis” one of three organisations behind the effort – along with environmental group Bloomin’ Crumlin and the Dublin South City Partnership “So when you’re coming at them talking about climate action you have to solve their other problems first,” she told the audience sitting in rows of chairs in the hall The project has identified three problems and three solutions to work on One problem is that a lot of area residents don’t feel heard the mapping and engagement phases of the project found according to a 60-page printed version of the report When asked what they’d like to see more of 85 percent of 193 respondents to an online survey said “decision-making at a community level” So the plan is to start a new Crumlin Community Forum to better represent Crumlin Another problem is the lack of community spaces 76 percent of respondents said they’d like more of those So the plan is for the new community forum to push for the creation of a new multi-purpose community centre for Crumlin The third issue the project identified was improving biodiversity and green spaces across Crumlin “Bloomin’ Crumlin is currently working towards this,” the book says “Engaging with the Community Forum on developing a greening strategy for the area would bring in more diverse groups across the community into the regeneration Bloomin’ Crumlin coordinator Trevor Clowry told the audience at the meeting in the parish hall There was a table with teas and coffees and biscuits and some were cradling paper cups of warm drinks “It’s very hard to communicate with all the people of Crumlin “So the community forum is what we’re thinking is a good way to get opinions from everyone.” Nearby areas have the Kilmainham Inchicore Network (KIN) and Dynamic Drimnagh ideally with some funding to hire a full-time coordinator “The game changer is getting adequate funding,” said O’Donoghue This new forum would be designed to bring together a wide range of institutions and organisations and people from across Crumlin Organise a first meeting of potential members early next year said “I think this is a fantastic starting point The group should include people from all over Crumlin “We’re trying to get as many groups as possible as we can to represent the whole community,” he said Groups interested in joining the forum could contact Clowry or himself It’s also hard to organise events in Crumlin “We’re really struggling to host events with over 100 people,” he said community-controlled centre where young people can hang out said he used to be a youth worker at the F2 Centre “We used to have kids as young as second class coming down from Crumlin on the bus alone,” he said There should be something closer to home for them If it was possible for Rialto to get the F2 it should be possible for Crumlin to get something similar Agnes’ Community Centre for Music and the Arts (CCMA) “Maybe we should link in with Fatima United “there needs to be a designated space for children who aren’t into sport a designated creative space where children can develop – the arts can be transformative” With the community organised via the new forum “I think the unified approach is key,” he said it pushes it much stronger than without it.” You've successfully subscribed to Dublin InQuirer Check your email for magic link to sign-in Gardaí in Crumlin after Friday night’s shooting incident Gardai speak with locals at the scene of a shooting incident in Crumlin Alan Sherry and Robin SchillerSun 23 Feb 2025 at 09:43A 39-year-old man was shot in the leg in a punishment-style attack in Dublin on Friday night was targeted by a gunman at a home on Rutland Avenue in Crumlin shortly after 9.45pm A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí and emergency services responded to a report of a firearm discharge at a residence on Rutland Avenue but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to St James’s Hospital The scene has been preserved for forensic examination and investigations are ongoing.” It is understood the man was shot in the leg in a punishment-style attack and will survive the incident but will remain in hospital over the weekend Gardaí are investigating whether his attackers deliberately shot him in the leg in a punishment-style attack rather than intending to kill him Early indication suggest the attack is not connected to any ongoing gangland feud Gardaí are appealing to any person who may have information in relation to this incident to contact them “Any road users who were in the Rutland Avenue and surrounding areas between 9:15pm and 10:15pm and who may have camera footage (including dash-cam footage) are asked to make this available to gardaí,” a spokesman said “Anyone with any information is asked to contact Sundrive Road Garda Station on 01 666 6600 the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111 The incident comes days after a gunman opened fire on two men in a car in north Dublin The man had been sitting in the vehicle in Ballymun around 10.30pm on Tuesday when they said they were chased by two other men in vehicle They told gardaí one of the men opened fire on them as they reached a slip-road towards the M50 It is understood six shots were fired as the chase continued along the motorway and onto Clonshaugh roundabout before they sped along the N32 towards Malahide The men managed to escape their attackers and ran into Malahide Garda Station At least one bullet hit the vehicle but neither man was injured That incident is not believed to be linked to the Crumlin shooting There have been a number of shooting incidents so far in Ireland in 2025 but no gun murders so far There were just two fatal shootings in Ireland last year Gun dealer and former solider Paddy O’Mahony Sr (84) was shot dead in his home in Castlemaine Former solider Thomas Carroll (67) of Brookway was subsequently charged with murdering the father-of-five Josh Itseli (20) was shot with an AR-15 assault rifle in Drimnagh It is believed he was accidentally shot by an associate as they and others were on their way to target rivals in Drimnagh Gardaí believe that Josh was one of four people in car which was rammed when they were on the way to carry out a pipe bomb attack The three men in the vehicle with him were later arrested but were subsequently released while investigations continued and file was prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions The number of gun killings in way down from the amount between the 2000s and 2010s There were more than 200 people shot dead in the decade between 2005 and 2015 as multiple gangland feuds raged across the country The killings increased during the Kinahan-Hutch feud which began in 2015 but have dipped significantly in recent years as gardaí have successfully thwarted numerous planned attacks and locked up key players Please check your inbox to verify your details Now download the free app for all the latest Sunday World News, Crime, Irish The aftermath of a fire at Ardscoil Éanna on the Crumlin Road in 2006 An illustration of how the proposed new library would look Sarah BurkeWed 11 Dec 2024 at 12:43Plans have been submitted to Dublin City Council to construct a new library building at the site of a former historic house and school on the Crumlin Road Ardscoil Éanna was a co-educational secondary school on the Crumlin Road who had been interned for his role in the Easter Rising in 1916 the school had a primary school in the form of prefabs The secondary school closed its doors in 2016 and has lain idle since The site is a protected structure and some key aspects of the proposal include creating a new library which will combine a new single storey and partial two-storey building On the ground floor it will combine an adult and children’s library space On the first floor it is proposed there will be a reading room meeting room and staff rooms alongside a glazed bridge linking it to the original historic house The historic building will be converted from the original school building to a library There are also proposals for conservation work which will include repairing and altering parts of the house adjusting the windows and restoring the original room layout Other changes proposed for the site involve retaining and repairing the historic gates and the stone wall along the southern boundary of the site with part of the modern wall being removed There will also be new vehicular access to the library from Crumlin Road and a new pedestrian entrance from Rafter’s Lane Landscaping work proposed includes creating accessible public spaces seating areas and bicycle parking with 18 spaces and there is an opportunity for submissions until January 15 Birchall’s on Bangor Drive in Crumlin is a lovely spot Despite the presence of security guards on our city buses now and the reassurance from the Minister for Justice that the city is safe Pub Spy and the team still prefer to use the pub-mobile to get to our destinations As we made the 20 minute journey across the city through Rialto and past the world’s most expensive and unfinished hospital within a few minutes we were parked outside the front door of Birchall’s pub on Bangor Drive Nothing like a few pints of stout to help lighten the mood the Old Commando said as we approached the entrance “There’s just something about driving by that children’s hospital that vexes me,” he muttered “Zero accountability as usual from our politicians and they all act with such impunity It’s fair easy to spend someone else’s money,” the Old Commando ranted isn’t the important thing going forward that lessons were learned,” the Young Commando joked referring to the much rolled-out phrase by the current Government every time they’re caught doing something wrong The Old Commando was immediately impressed with Birchall’s pub but more impressive for him was the sign at the front door saying Over 23s and No Children Please He has long been a critic of children being anywhere near a pub so this publican certainly has his backing We were welcomed by an experienced blonde barmaid as soon as we landed at the counter and she took our order without delay while engaging briefly with our Commandos before returning to her conversation with two locals at the far end of the counter Smithwicks cost €6.20 and the pints of Carlsberg were €6.50 while our designated driver had a soft drink which cost €3.40 There was a good atmosphere in the bar and it was reasonably busy too with an all male clientele who were well capable of knocking back the drinks With four TVs in the bar the punters were kept busy backing horses and watching football but the overall consensus from the locals was they couldn’t wait until the international break was over but wouldn’t international football put you to sleep?” one local complained The timber flooring beside the counter looked as good as new and the carpeted section was clean too The orange velvet swivel barstools were in good condition There’s a golf society at Birchall’s pub with their last outing for 2024 scheduled for next weekend There’ll surely be a few pints consumed that evening The lounge area also has two large screen TVs and the clientele in this section was more mixed with a younger age profile There are signs advertising 10.5” pizzas for just €9 but we didn’t notice any or smell any other food for that matter during our stay Perhaps the kitchen had closed by the time we called there are a few parking spots outside the pub reserved for customers and our designated driver is always appreciative of that We carried out an inspection of the toilets during our visit and were happy to report they were clean with two cubicles a stainless steel urinal and a powerful hand dryer We had an enjoyable first time visit to Birchall’s and marked it down for a return visit Kelly’s pub was enjoying a roaring trade when Pub Spy and the team stopped by recently for a quick pint There was hardly an empty seat in the bar and the atmosphere was very lively They were really enjoying themselves during our stay A barman with grey hair was working in the bar with a younger barmaid covering the lounge and the Old Commando struck up an instant rapport with the experienced pint puller There are eight TVs in the bar with horse racing and football being shown and lads were dipping in and out to the bookmakers next door The green leather bench seating was in decent shape and there are pints of Fosters and Guinness Zero available on draught All eight urinals and both cubicles were clean We enjoyed our first visit to Kelly’s for almost 11 years Betty Jeffers display some of the knitwear that will go to the Crumlin Hospital Baby Unit Carnew’s active community of knitters has come together once again this year to craft an impressive collection of colourful baby clothes and blankets for families attending the Crumlin Hospital's premature baby unit Coordinated by Mary Blake of Carnew Community Care’s ‘Home First’ project a team of local knitters have been working diligently all year round to create hundreds of white from tiny hats and booties to soft cardigans and blankets Produced by avid home knitters and members of the centre’s knitting group some of whom were behind the centre’s spectacular 11ft by 12ft wool map of Ireland the massive haul of knitwear will now find its way into the hands of worried and stressed parents bringing a little relief as they tend the bedside of their little one and we’ve been doing this for several years usually presenting the knitwear about twice a year,” Mary explained “The clothes are produced by the knitters who come into the centre and then there’s a lot of people outside the centre who come in now and again and/or bring in items they have knitted at home “Even though the group has taken on a big project like the wool map they have still found time to create hundreds of pieces for the children and then they also make bigger hats for older children that have cancer “It’s a huge haul of clothing and the knitters take a great deal of pride in creating it knowing that it’s going to a worthy cause and reaching families who are going through a very testing and stressful time.” Several of the knitters gathered at the centre recently to present the clothing to Caroline Bernie who was representing the Crumlin baby unit expressing her delight at the quality and quantity of the donated items “Parents appreciate the practical gift and are also touched by the thoughtfulness behind it which can greatly lift their spirits during what is often a very distressing time,” she said Delighted to facilitate the heartwarming initiative Carnew Community Care manager Anne Kavanagh expressed her heartfelt thanks to the dedicated knitters for their “time and love in handcrafting these garments” “There’s a huge network of knitters in Carnew and the surrounding areas who coordinate to produce this clothing between people who frequent the centre and those knitting at home,” Anne said “They’ve been doing this for years now and Crumlin Hospital loves them Caroline was here to collect the pieces on behalf of her sister who is a nurse at Crumlin Hospital and is always telling us how much the parents appreciate these little gifts for their infants who also make blankets for the elderly in Rathdrum are a great bunch and they have all really bought into this initiative over the years LifestyleAIB Portrait Prize seeks Wicklow applications after success of two Garden County artistsThe AIB Portrait Prize and Those plans have covered the Liberties, the north-east inner city, and Stoneybatter, said the spokesperson. “Greening interventions are now extending to other parts of the city.” Councils do hold basic metrics for trees, says UCD researcher and a physical geographer Gerald Mills. They know locations to some extent, health, size, he said. But that doesn’t fully capture the environmental benefits from the trees, Mills said. The project aims to fill in some of that detail, he says. Data that can be used to calculate how much carbon the trees sequester, the oxygen they release, the stormwater they can soak up – and how they filter pollutants from the air, and moderate hot weather. The detailed data collected through the Crumlin pilot will be searchable for all online in an easy way, says Sannigrahi. Their project receives funding from Science Foundation Ireland, says Jeremy Auerbach, an assistant professor at UCD and the team member of the project. The next step is for Clowry, of Bloomin’ Crumlin, to assign community leaders to different areas, with each team responsible for surveying about 1,000 trees, said Robinson, of UCD. UCD will collect the data, start to identify gaps in “green infrastructure”, and come back and tell the community what they found, says Robinson. “We won’t define the solutions,” he said. They’ll bring in experts to help the community choose solutions that they want to push, he says. Another said: "The best shopping centre growing up in the 80s and 90s This comes after the fashion retailer Quiz announced its closure of Irish stores – after it fell into insolvency Quiz Clothing has shut almost two dozen shops, with closures affecting locations in Ireland Some 191 employees have been made redundant following the immediate store closures Irish closures include shops at The Square Tallaght, Dublin Erneside shopping centre in Enniskillen and Richmond shopping centre in Derry said: "The board took the difficult decision to appoint administrators to Zandra Retail Limited in light of the continuing challenging trading conditions impacting the group's performance "We are deeply sorry to those affected by the store closures this decision will put the business on a more sustainable footing for the future and protect several hundred jobs as a result."
