Photo: stationroaddunboynelrd.ie One of the single largest planned residential developments the State has seen this year has been given the green light in county Meath. Dublin based firm John Connaughton Ltd applied last September to build over 850 new homes on the outskirts of Dunboyne. The plans, had at the time, been widely viewed as being one of the most substantial residential planning applications in recent memory, designs that subject to approval, incorporated the building of 853 new homes. The development had been earmarked on lands spanning over 50 acres at Station Road (L2228) and Old Navan Road (R147), Dunboyne, Co Meath in the townlands of Dunboyne, Clonee, Castle Farm and Loughsallagh. In a further move and to cater for the anticipated population influx into the area, a café, medical unit, two retail units, a community room and two creches have similarly been incorporated. The mooted development site stretches to in excess of 54 acres with over two-thirds of that total boasting a “net developable area”, according to its planning file. Almost 400 of the proposed homes have been earmarked as one, two and three bedroom apartments in three separate apartment blocks. A further 112 duplex homes in six additional apartment blocks, ranging from two to four storeys in height also form part of the application. The plans also provide for 343 houses, spanning one to three storeys with approximately 308 of those comprising of three bedroom homes. The remaining 35 homes comprise 31 four bedroom houses and four two bedroom homes. Meath County Council’s planning department has now granted planning permission to the ambitious plans, subject to 49 conditions. Fire Engines had to travel to hydrants over a 1.5 km away from the fire last night to replenish supplies ”Irish Water has previously described the supply in Dunboyne as being “on a knife edge” – and this fire has exposed the real risks of that fragility or a trickle from taps during peak hours.’ This is not sustainable I asked that the hydrants at Kilbreena be inspected due to my concerns over water pressure The fire service confirmed they were not fit for purpose I went out with the fire service that night and it was clear that the pressure is not there I was told contingency planning was in place – yet last night we saw how limited and vulnerable that response truly is.” pointed out the councillor Meath County Councillors continually raise the issue of water outages and various issues at council meetings but it is outside the remit of all councils Irish Water holds responsibility and accountability but it is the councillors who face the backlash of the communities ”I have asked Meath County Council and Irish Water repeatedly to work together on this The constant back and forth between agencies must end The people of Dunboyne want solutions.” Joe and Mary O’Connor (nee Byrne) of Castleview Dunboyne will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on 4th May The Golden Couple are 62 years together and still going strong Joe and Mary will celebrate with their four daughters Caroline O’Connor of Florida and Cilla O’Connor of Walkinstown Dublin where Best man Gabriel Cribbin will join them too nieces and neighbours send congratulations and best wishes on this wonderful milestone Formerly of Summerhill, Co. A massive residential development of 850 homes on lands adjacent to Dunboyne Railway Station have been given the green light by Meath Co Council of which 15.9 hectares is net developable lands and the proposal includes a mix of apartments Fire crews tending Thornton's Recycling fire had to trek 1.5km to draw water such was the pressure in hydrants at the scene That's according to a local councillor who claimed a major blaze at the recycling centre underlined just how poor the supply is in the local area The fire broke out last night at the Thornton Recycling facility shortly after 10pm in Dunboyne and brought under control this morning There were no injuries as the centre was closed at the time with no personnel on site Local Councillor Caroline O’Reilly said she was thankful no injuries have been reported “but the wider implications of this incident cannot be ignored.” It was reported that residents in Kilbreena and other nearby areas lost their water due to fire crews being forced to draw water from hydrants 1.5km away in the village as there was insufficient water pressure at nearby hydrants adjacent to the facility Uisce Eireann previously said Dunboyne’s water supply was “on a knife edge” according to O’Reilly “I have received countless messages from residents facing repeated disruptions – no water or a trickle from taps during peak hours,” O’Reilly said She said there is an issue with aging and poorly maintained infrastructure including “A leak of 43 cubic metres per day was left unresolved for three weeks after I raised it in February.” Insufficient supply to meet demand or respond to emergencies and network design flaws that worsen pressure issues at peak times are also issues she said are contributing to the issue O’Reilly said she asked in early March that the hydrants at Kilbreena be inspected and the fire service said they were not fit for purpose “I went out with the fire service that night and it was clear that the pressure is not there we saw how limited and vulnerable that response truly is.” “This incident reinforces what I’ve been saying for some time – we need a dedicated reservoir to support Dunboyne and its surrounding areas small one-year level 5 foundation course to help students get into university over the past couple years the college has been pushing to make it grow into something that's more industry relevant Head of Music and Sound at DCFE said “Rather than just like a taste of course or a stepping stone to go into classical or traditional music courses The course has developed into a two-year Level 6 Higher National Diploma which incorporates songwriting performance and artist development to get people to go straight into industry Graduates of the HND in Artist Development for Musicians can go straight into performing and working in the industry as session musicians while also having the option to do a degree and step into universities and advanced entry First year music students showcased their talents at The Grand Social in Dublin on Monday 24th first year HND Sound Engineering students helped with recording audio for footage of the night as well as setting up the stage and helping the have been performing in The Grand Social for 5 years now creating a great opportunity to play in Dublin city centre creating a real feel for performing in Dublin “I think one of the best quotes that stuck with me was from a student a few years ago who said they saw their favourite band play the stage at The Grand Social a week before they were on stage to performing their own music that's the experience that the students are getting is real industry focus,” said Robert Kelly the night had an amazing atmosphere with hard work shown and appreciated by all attending all songs performed on the from members of the same family a white Peugeot van and a white Nissan van were all taken in the early hours of last Thursday morning Two more vehicles were stolen from Lutterell Hall belonging to a husband and wife the same night It is understood that one of the vehicles has been recovered but the other is still missing A resident of Dunboyne Castle told the Meath Chronicle how her husband's Nissan van was stolen along with her father's Peugeot van and her sister's Ford Focus all from the estate It appears the culprits took the keys of the Ford Focus and the Peugeot van from her father's house across the road Her father also had a spare key to her husband's van and they took this as well and made off with the van She told the Chronicle that her father's van was recovered after a garda pursuit and the suspects were caught but said the van was totally destroyed with the wheels busted and it had been crashed Her husband's van is still missing and he has had to rent a car to get to and from work and her sister's car has not been found either The woman put out an appeal on the local Dunboyne Noticeboard Facebook page the day after the thefts for anyone had with CCTV footage of the culprits to get in touch She said a lot of people did get in touch which helped them track the movements of the suspects who were in the estate from midnight until about 6am and that she was so grateful to everyone who got in touch She has also thanked Gardai for their work in apprehending the suspects who it is understood appeared in court but were subsequently released on bail a blue from Pilltown with two hard earned Feis Cup points on Thursday night The visitors got away to a fine start here with two-point scores from Dan Hickey and Jason Gleeson before a goal from the former of the aforementioned pair gave those who last lifted the said trophy in 2004 a four point buffer at the change of ends Despite playing into the elements in the second half coupled with a Cathal Melia goal and what ended up being a hat-trick of two point scores from Liam Byrne left things nicely poised with one round of group games to go in which Dunboyne will face Seneschalstown.  INTO Dunshaughlin are back in the Meath SFC final for the first time since 2011 after shading this afternoon’s semi-final against St Peter’s Dunboyne by a point - 0-11 to 0-10 leading by 0-5 to 0-3 after twenty minutes - with two points apiece from Donal Lenihan and Cathal Lacey two points each from Mathew Costello and Ruairí Kinsella kept Dunshaughlin in touch The scoreboard read 0-6 apiece at the interval but Dunshaughlin continued where they left off at the start of the second half with Kinsella and Ben Duggan finding the first two points to edge their team in front by 0-8 to 0-6 Then the momentum then swung back in Dunboyne’s favour Lenihan registered three frees in succession to give the 2018 champions a 0-9 to 0-8 as the match moved into the final quarter It was to be Dunshaughlin’s day however as the men playing in red and black outscored their opponents by 0-3 to 0-1 inside the final fourteen minutes to snatch victory Kinsella's fifth of the day and one Aaron Murphy put Richie Kealy’s side 0-10 to 0-9 in front before Donal Lenihan levelled the game up again at 0-10 apiece Luke Mitchell the kicked what was to be the winning free in added time but that wasn’t the end of the drama as Lenihan’s late effort at an equaliser was just off target for Dunboyne Ger Robinson's men were ultimately left to rue 12 wides over the hour which cost them dearly Dunshaughlin are now just one win away from claiming their first Keegan Cup since 2002 but either Skryne or Wolfe Tones will be hoping to deny them the silverware Those two teams meet in the second semi-final tomorrow afternoon in Páirc Tailteann Dunshaughlin manager Richie Kealy spoke about the buzz in the village at the moment Robbie McCarthy marked his return to the Dunboyne colours after several years away by posting a magnificent seven points as the black and ambers came away from Grangegodden with their second win from as many outings in the PR Coyne FL Div 1 after a typically entertaining tangle between the familiar foes McCarthy’s haul included three two-point efforts one an audacious outside-of-the-boot curler identical to what Jack McCarron did twice in Pairc Tailteann on Sunday last Or for those of us who can remember back a bit further akin to the mesmeric score conjured by Ciaran McDonald for Mayo to beat Dublin in 2006 Welcoming back Donal Lenihan for his first start of the season and with former Waterford player Jason Gleeson leading the attack those who claimed the Mooney Cup on their sole occasion back in 2014 led by 1-10 to 0-09 at the break with Cathal Melia tucking away his now customary goal.  the hosts did come roaring back with experienced heads Oisin Reilly Brian Hanlon and the burgeoning Andrew Gormley got them back to parity at 1-13 apiece McCarthy and Lenihan clipped over scores to put the points on the road A Dunboyne holistic therapist has been honoured with several awards for her skincare range at the recent Beauty Shortlist Awards 2025 Josie's Botanicals has been named Best Aromatherapy Skincare Brand at the prestigious awards Creator of Josie's Botanicals; "We are absolutely thrilled and deeply honoured to receive these awards It's a testament to the love and care we put into every product ensuring our customers experience the best safest and most beneficial ingredients that nature has to offer." It was a repeat of the 2023 minor championship final, where extra time was required before St Peters Dunboyne edged past St Colmcille's by the minimum. In perfect conditions for football, another close game was expected by the large crowd that had gathered. PHOTOS Colmcille's registered their first point right from the throw in with a tidy effort from their midfielder which was to prove to be the only time they would lead in the game The Dunboyne men responded well with Sean McNulty levelling matters in the 2nd minute with a well taken point after some excellent work by Jack Doyle For the next 10 minutes the teams were working each other out and while there was a lot of movement and possession on both sides the next score proved elusive It came in the 11th minute when Eoin McCrudden found Conor Murphy for a neat strike off the right One minute later Domo Eaton found Jack Doyle in space and the 2024 County Minor didn't miss The next 5 minutes were to prove crucial to the end result and gave the Dunboyne lads a cushion that they would never relinquish In the 17th minute Murphy laid off a pinpoint pass to Harry Healy who was on the overlap with Healy registering the games first two-pointer in the 22nd minute with Murphy getting another two-pointer after a Healy assist Cilles' got their second point in between but Murphy popped up again when he split the posts from 35 yards leaving the score on 23 minutes at Dunboyne 0:08 Colmcille's 0:2.  The new rules were to work in Dunboyne's advantage again in the 17th minute when Cilles were blown up for not having 3 in their own half Harry Healy backed himself and moved back out to the edge of the Arc nailed the kick and another two points for his team This was to be the last score of the first half with Dunboyne leading at the break on a scoreline of 0:10 (incl 3 X 2-pointers) to 0:2 The second half started as the first half did with the Cilles midfielder opening the scoring on 2 minutes The Bettystown team started the half quite well and it was nip and tuck for the first 15 minutes Harry Healy registered another free after Cian Tobin was fouled in the 6th minute Colmcille's got the next score before the team captain got his second of the game after a swift move up the field This was countered again by the team in blue four minutes later before Healy popped over another free on 14 minutes Jack Mulvey was introduced halfway through the second half and caused problems for the Cilles defence from the off with his tireless running Mulvey was rewarded with a point after he finished off a searing run and off-load by the excellent Healy Colmcille's were working the Dunboyne defense extremely hard but the Black and Amber back line stood resolute after a rare mistake in the small square resulted in the ball falling perfectly for a Colmcille's attacker who gave Jamie McCormack no chance in the Dunboyne goal St Peters held a healthy lead 0:14 to 1:05 18 minutes into the second half On 20 minutes Eoin McCrudden registered another point after great work again by Mulvey Conor Murphy then had a goal disallowed for square ball before the adventurous Andrew Howlin rattled the upright with another effort Colmcille's were to register one more point in the 26th minute before Healy got the last score of the game one minute into injury time from another free 60 seconds later the final whistle sounded and the game finished with a 7-point win for St Peters Dunboyne team captain, Sean McNulty accepted the trophy on behalf of his team Dunboyne: Jamie McCormack; Briain Comiskey; Daragh Vaughan; Paul Dempsey; Andrew Howlin; Ciaran McCormack; Eoghan Pearl; Sean McNulty (0:02) (C); Eoin McCrudden (0:01); Jack Doyle (0:01); Cian Tobin; Harry Healy (0:07 4f); Dom Eaton; Conor Murphy (0:4); James Lonergan;  Subs: Jack Mulvey (0:01) for Eoghan Pearl; Calum Brown for Jack Doyle; Liam Davis; Sean Cregan; Tadgh Brennan; Shea Mooney; Paul Magee; Josh Mahon; Stephen Kiely; Ronan Kelly;  Residents of the Dunboyne Castle estate have called on Meath Co Council to provide a pedestrian crossing and traffic calming measures following the opening of the new primary school and GAA facilities in the area a member of the Dunboyne Castle Residents Traffic Sub Committee said residents are concerned about road safety "in particular now that both the new school and the new GAA academy pitches will generate a lot of underage and unsupervised pedestrian traffic." "We have a wonderful new school with a great principal and new GAA facilities We have been campaigning for traffic calming measures for a long time but our appeals appear to have fallen on deaf ears We have asked for more signs but again it appear to have fallen on deaf ears "We were delighted to see the lovely wide footpath outside the school - they did a great job - and we thought the council would provide a pedestrian crossing We really need traffic calming and a pedestrian crossing," he said Meath County council has been approached for comment 2024 (peacefully) surrounded by his family and in the loving care of the staff at St James (Jim); sadly missed by his loving sister Kitty Dunboyne on Monday evening (November 11th) between 5 pm and 7 pm Removal on Tuesday morning (November 12th) to the Church of S.S Dunboyne arriving for Funeral Mass at 11am followed by burial in Rooske Cemetery James’ funeral service may be viewed (live only) by following this LINK Messages of sympathy and condolences for the family may be left by selecting “Condolences” below or alternatively at www.cunninghamsfunerals.com Gardaí have made significant inroads in their attempts to solve an armed robbery at a business premises in Dunboyne Co Meath in December that saw staff being threatened with a wheel brace A man in his 40s is to appear in court over the coming days charged in connection to an armed robbery in one of county Meath’s busiest towns which was executed by specialist detectives from a locally based serious crime unit comes on the back of more than two months of painstaking inquiries following a break-in at a business outlet in Dunboyne on December 10 investigating officers have been trying to piece together the circumstances that led up to an incident which saw a two-man gang storm into a commercial premises along the town’s main street Both suspects sported balaclavas and wielded a wheel brace during the terrifying incident where a number of staff were also threatened A small quantity of cash was stolen in the brazen raid with both suspects fleeing the scene on foot moments later “Detectives attached to the Meath South Serious Crime Unit investigating a robbery incident have arrested a male (yesterday) morning,” said a garda spokesperson Two males wearing balaclavas entered a business premises armed with a wheel brace They threatened staff and fled from the premises with a small amount of cash He will now be brought before the courts.” in the excellent care of the staff of Silverstream Nursing Home Olive will be sadly missed by her children William Reposing at Mc Entaggart’s Funeral Home, Ratoath (A85 DW27) from 5pm until 7pm on Wednesday. New Meath manager follows in footsteps of Sean Boylan and Andy McEntee From as far back as when I was in Primary school my powers of recall were often a topic of discussion Especially if the subject matter was either sport or farming related Even though to some of the assembled audience mention of either would constitute fountains of useless information I think it was in second class that at least one footballer and hurler from every county in Ireland Fast forward a couple of years and we arrive at that oft recalled winter of 1994 following the exploits of Seneschalstown in the Leinster Club Championship after he was 'done' against Sarsfields of Kildare in an earlier round it meant the Yellow Furze outfit were without Graham Geraghty for a two game epic semi final against St Joseph's of Laois and the Leinster Club SFC Final against Kilmacud Crokes even then it was a stacked Crokes side which contained the Mick Pender John Costello and several others with fairly glossy CVs Brennan was among the subs that day or not I can't recall But he was definitely at full forward four years later when my own St Peter's Dunboyne took on another star studded Crokes crew just as was the case with Seneschalstown a few years beforehand our lads performed utterly heroically only to be beaten a short head at the line that day remains one of the toughest days endured near a football field Especially in the context of how our two meetings with the Stillorgan club which followed Robbie Brennan was just another name on an opposition team list that changed one night in Brady's of Dunboyne It was the early summer of 2001 and I was just slowly edging out of a particularly horrendous chapter of my life story it will be openly admitted that if there was ever a stage when one leaned on porter a little too much as a painkiller light heartedly among the wonderful and wide circle of friends I was blessed with I happened to bump into Andy McEntee who introduced the chap in his company by saying "This is Robbie Brennan he's coming over to Dunboyne to play for us At which point both their jaws dropped when the response was "Indeed I do he played full forward on Moe Finn and kicked two points If anyone ever wondered why I hold Andy in the highest regard and will forever do so On the night after we won our first Keegan Cup in 1998 during a quiet moment in the midst of all the chaos in Mulvany's he simply said to me "I know how much it means to you" it's Dunboyne and/or Meath teams doing well that keep these wheels turning I would have no problem pinpointing the 11 years spent as PRO/Asst PRO of St Peter's GAA Club as the most important of my life mention has been made voraciously of the years of how farming always has been remains and eternally will be one of the central tenets which make life livable due to circumstances more than anything else agricultural adventures have come and gone off the agenda over the years Maybe not in the capacity it is wished or desired Which might explain why Andy introduced me to Robbie as "The heart and soul of the club" it most certainly wouldn't carry much credence today Sure didn't we scandalously discover that just a few weeks ago With the defenestration of Colm O'Rourke - make no mistake no matter how some might try and dress it up - which promulgated cause to keyboard what you are reading Robbie may have got the standard Dunboyne initiation it was I who informed his late father-in-law Paddy that the new full forward and his daughter Which was all grand until it came to the happy couple's wedding day when my dear departed and desperately missed old friend from Ardara told all assembled that it was (his) "dear friend the Drainpipe Reporter who solved the mystery of the extra pair of boots in the house" Whether the following was down to the fact that Liz's brother David (Gallagher) and I are so close we may as well be brothers I'm not sure but Robbie and I just clicked immediately and even though due to my personal circumstances changing nearly a decade ago we haven't been able to meet up half as much as it is wished was the case I think what brought us closer was when Robbie's dad Pat fell ill the night before one of our championship matches but I had no idea until Robbie came out of the dressing room after the match in tears his career with us was an emotional rollercoaster to losing a championship semi final against Trim winning the Feis Cup before one of the most (in) famous days in our club's history That being the occasion during which our big full forward was sent for an early shower yet despite that we looked to have Navan O'Mahonys beaten only a point from the great Niall McKeigue deep into stoppage time the hoops to extra time What there is absolute clarity about is that when he eventually succumbed to a cacophony of injuries he got straight into being a team mentor with Dunboyne When somebody does so as quickly as was the case here not only do they have the best of intentions for those with whom they are involved they are also driven towards going places in their new capacity Whether that be with entities close to home or further afield from the perspective of furthering his managerial career returning to Kilmacud Crokes - via a short stint with St Sylvester's in Malahide - proved a masterstroke having built up such an impressive managerial resume - pretty quickly too - opportunities to graduate to inter county management became an inevitability At least two 'outside' counties were mentioned of those that were touted he was the standout candidate we must remember the famous utterance that the only three certainties in the world - Life saw Robbie Brennan become the eighth different Meath senior football manager since Sean Boylan abdicated his throne 19 years ago I must admit to knowing absolutely nothing about Martin Corey who has come aboard as a coach/selector but the acquisition of the services of somebody of the calibre and nous of Joe McMahon must be regarded as something of a coup No doubt there will be some regard Robbie as an 'outside' appointment but nothing could be further from the truth he was also part of Bernard Flynn's Meath U-20 management team before the feisty former forward jumped ship the now Meath manager stood out for wearing the Royal County jersey at Kilmacud training there should be no doubt about where his loyalties ever lay after his sister Jean - based in Australia for many years - posted a photo of her younger brother - in what I'm guessing was circa 1986 in Colm O'Rourke Sports with the owner thereof Jean captioned the shot thus: “Congratulations to my little brother on becoming Meath senior football manager It’s not often in life you get to succeed your heroes” but a thoroughly deserved honour and opportunity The death has occurred of Philomena (Philo) Boylan-Stewart a member of the Boylan family of Dunboyne and the last surviving daughter of Seán and Gertie Boylan of Edenmore she was wife of the late John Stewart (Brig Gen) Co Mayo and previously in Longwood and Dunboyne She died on Tuesday at Mayo University Hospital Ms Boylan-Stewart was a prominent member of the Meath Peace Group over the years 26th September to Ss Peter and Paul’s Church followed by burial in Loughsallagh Cemetery Plans for a massive residential development of 850 homes on lands adjacent to Dunboyne Railway Station have been lodged with Meath Co Council John Connaughton Limited is proposing to build 853 resident units The main application site is generally bounded by Station Road (L2228) to the south The application includes also modifications to two roundabouts on the Old Navan Road and each with balconies or terraces; 112 duplex units in six blocks of two to four storeys consisting of 60 two-bed and 52 three-bedroom units Meath) August 3rd 2024 (suddenly but peacefully) at home Beloved husband of Marion and dear father of Paul Brigid and Michael and a cherished grandfather of James Kate and Iarla; Sadly missed by his loving wife extended family especially Michael (Micksey)
