Pat and Mike Glennon were pleased to welcome Minister Michael Healy-Rae to their flagship sawmill in Fermoy
and saw the results of the latest €23 million investment in the state-of-the-art operations
Glennon Brothers and Minister Healy-Rae discussed the key issues in the forestry sector
including the significant decline in afforestation rates
Just 1,573 hectares were planted in Ireland in 2024 - the lowest level in 70 years -compared to a Government target of 8,000 hectares annually and a Climate Action Plan goal of 18,000 hectares per year

The meeting also aired concerns about the financial risks of continued under-planting
could ultimately bear the burden of potential fines amounting to billions of euros from the EU if Ireland failsto meet its climate change targets

Further discussions focused on the impact of the policy shift away from commercial forestry towards hardwood planting
and its potential consequences for carbon sequestration
and the long-term sustainability of rural employment
“I was delighted to visit Glennon Brothers’ impressive facility in Fermoy and to see the results of their latest €23 million investment in state-of-the-art operations
This brings the company’s total investment in the plant to €80 million since 1998 - supporting not only the 135 direct employees in Fermoy
but also providing opportunities for the 65 people engaged in harvesting and haulage
This investment is a major support for rural employment and a vital boost to the local economy
I look forward to working together on common issues in the future.”
thanked Minister Healy-Rae for taking the time to visit our flagship facility
and for his continued support of rural development and the timber industry

“We’ve always believed in the strength of Irish timber and the skilled people behind it
we’re investing not just in cutting-edge technology
but in the long-term sustainability of Ireland’s rural economy
With 905 people now employed across our operations in Ireland and Scotland
we’re honoured to share this positive story with Minister Healy-Rae - one that highlights the economic and environmental value forestry and timber can deliver for communities across the country.”

Tuesday’s general cattle sale in Cork Marts Corrin sales yard met a sharper trade
with much more bite in the buying for any slaughter-fit stock
with prices increasing by 16c/kg to 20c/kg on last week’s level
The average price paid for cows was in the region of €2.70/kg
with the best-quality heavier Friesian cows weighing over 600kg exceeding €3/kg
Lighter cows and those with a lower covering of flesh sold from €2.40/kg to €2.70/kg
while cows with a poor flesh cover or weighing less than 500kg liveweight sold back to €2.10/kg to €2.30/kg
Numbers in marts have reduced sharply in the last fortnight and it was no different in Fermoy
The entry of almost 150 head was similar to last week
but 70 to 80 head lower than the previous few weeks
cattle numbers – and in particular slaughter-fit cattle – were in tighter supply

Mart manager Sean Leahy said the tightness in supply is inserting more competition into the trade
Average prices for bullocks weighing 600kg-plus were steady
but the top third increased by 19c/kg to average €4.32/kg
while the bottom third was influenced by plainer-quality types and reduced by 20c/kg to average €3.51/kg
Bullocks weighing 500kg to 600kg averaged €3.89/kg
with Angus lots selling from €3.70/kg to €4.25/kg and Friesians back to €3.50/kg
It was a similar trend for bullocks weighing 400kg to 500kg
but with a tighter range for lots weighing 500kg to 600kg
Those weighing 400kg to 500kg ranged from €3.29/kg for the bottom third to €4.07/kg for the top third
with prices for a steady entry of over 1,000 head rising by as much as €50 to €80 in last Wednesday’s sale
The top third of bull calves averaged over €500/head
with strong Belgian Blue and Simmental calves driving the trade
Angus calves sold anywhere from €200 to upwards of €400 depending on quality
The mart will hold a couple more seasonal dairy sales with demand high and prices for quality cows ranging from €2,000 to €3,000 per head

The 2GoCup system has been rolling out across the town over the past two weeks
giving local businesses and customers a head start in shifting away from single-use coffee cups and embracing a more environmentally conscious option
offers a practical and eco-friendly alternative to disposable cups by providing a reusable cup that can be returned to any participating outlet
Customers pay a small deposit of €2 for their cup
Eight independent cafes and food outlets in Fermoy
are already signed up and fully equipped to offer the 2GoCup system
and local Gardaí have all pledged their support
“We’re thrilled to see customers in Fermoy embracing this #ReuseOrReturn initiative,” said Gráinne O’Connor
“This is about creating long-term change by making it easy and convenient for people to do the right thing.”
The initiative will officially launch on Saturday
giving customers another opportunity to learn more about how the system works before a 20c surcharge will be implemented on all single use cups

Reassurances were provided to councillors at a recent Fermoy Municipal District meeting that the opening of the new Tesco Superstore in Fermoy will have no major impact on traffic congestion in the town
Taoiseach Micheál Martin performed the sod turning for the new Tesco Superstore which is located at Mill Road
Fermoy (directly across from the Mart Car Park) last September
The British multinational retailer is expected to be operational in summertime 2025
The store will include car parking and cycle parking facilities
a dedicated Tesco Mobile phone shop as well as the provision of Click+Collect services for customers and a grocery home shopping hub to serve the wider catchment area of north Cork
Fine Gael councillor Kay Dawson’s motion requested an update on any traffic management plans for Fermoy to alleviate any traffic congestion when the new Tesco store opens
“This is to do with the proposed new development to seek the advice and expertise of the staff as to how we gauge this going forward.”
Fianna Fáil councillor Frank O’Flynn who seconded the motion agreed that there are pinch points in the town
“Traffic is very much increasing in the town
The town of Fermoy is doing exceptionally well
“Traffic is a major issue in the town of Fermoy,” said Independent councillor Peter O’Donoghue
“There will be an awful lot of traffic going in and out and shopping in Tesco
It is going to be a negative impact on top of the traffic issues that we have already.”
Cllr O’Donoghue said a plan is required now to ease the traffic congestion in the town
“We need to act now before the traffic is absolute bedlam altogether
We create a plan now and we access how we can alleviate the traffic issues in Fermoy now.”
Independent councillor William O’Leary highlighted other areas that are causing congestion in Fermoy: “People are telling me on the ground that the sequence of the lights in the Square is causing some congestion in the town
One big issue that has arisen lately is that you have buses coming up the left hand lane in Pearse Square and they are swinging across
“The second thing causing issues is the traffic lights at Bishop Murphy’s
At peak hours we have a school warden there but after 4pm the lights are constantly changing colours and it adds to the congestion in the town,” he added
Senior Executive Engineer with Cork County Council Brendan O’Gorman reiterated that An Bord Pleanála went through the body of the planning file and they recommended permission for Tesco
“Traffic studies undertaken as part of the planning process under the governing permission and ratified by An Bord Pleanála indicate that the opening of Tesco here will have no major impacts on traffic congestion in the town.”
Mr O’Gorman said the local authority is ‘committed’ to the traffic management study for Fermoy
“The traffic management study that we are looking at for Fermoy is not just for Tesco
Where is all the housing going to be built in Fermoy and what are the demands
No developments in Christchurch or any public realm can happen until the traffic management plan is in place
In reply Cllr Dawson said the main aim is to enhance people’s experience when visiting Fermoy
spend more and they will be directed up the town and go into other shops
I think there has been an improvement in the traffic flow in Fermoy in the last while
This motion is that we will be prepared and that we know what we are dealing with.”

Fermoy’s traffic issues again got an airing at a meeting of the Northern Committee on Tuesday
as although it was not included within the roads report issued by the executive

Fermoy public toilets are due to be ‘deep cleaned’
with the facility coming in for criticism from some quarters
as the toilets appeared were a vandalised and unhygenic condition
One individual said that in the past few weeks
were ‘filthy’ and ‘the dirtiest I’ve ever seen’
The gent’s toilets had staining on the walls and around the urinals
while the urinals seemed to not be draining and were caked in filth and grime
Several areas on the walls appeared splattered an unknown substance
The hand soap dispenser was also reportedly empty for some time too
The Avondhu checked the condition of the women’s public toilets on Monday
did have some staining on the stainless steel doors and sinks
as wet paper appeared stuck in one corner of the ceiling
Kopek Des Bordes & Paul Townend win the Grade 1 Michael O'Sullivan Supreme Novice Hurdle for owner CHarlie McCarthy & his Sons
The Michael O’Sullivan Supreme Novice Hurdle got the four day festival underway as 50,000 fans clapped in unison in a lovely tribute to the Lombardstown jockey
who tragically lost his life over three weeks ago
Willie Mullins’ gelding was fighting to retain his unbeaten record and started as the 4-6 favourite under Paul Townend for the opening race of the 2025 Festival
tracking long-time leader Workahead and then kicking clear up the hill to hold off a challenge from William Munny
despite a jumping error at the last hurdle
Winning owner Charlie McCarthy after Kopek Des Bordes won the Michael O'Sullivan Supreme Novices' Hurdle on day one of the 2025 Cheltenham Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse. The length and three-quarters runner-up ran a huge race in defeat
and so nearly carried the colours famously sported by the late Michael O’Sullivan when the Barry Connell-trained Marine Nationale won the corresponding event in 2023
The presentation of the trophy was made by his brother Alan and uncle Eugene who were thrilled to have winning Cork owners and Lisgoold’s Paul Townend in the saddle
Kopek Des Bordes is owned by Fermoy man Charlie McCarthy along with his four sons and it was a special win for him after undergoing surgery for cancer just 11 days ago
“I had cancer of my right kidney and I had my kidney removed
I’m disease free and I’m going to have one hell of a party," McCarthy said
"I don’t want to cry but I can tell you one thing
to be here with my sons and win the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle after everything I’ve been through
"This is a dream come true and the dream is not finished yet
the small man can have a say in it and I’m no small man but I am the small man here
McCarthy dedicated the victory to O’Sullivan
who died last month aged 24 due to injuries sustained in a fall at Thurles
It’s a wonderful day for me because the race is named after Michael O’Sullivan
he lived about 20 kilometres from me and I’ll donate this to the O’Sullivan family
”I met his brother earlier and I said ‘I would love to win it for the O’Sullivan family’
Cheltenham 11-3-25 Winning jockey Paul Townend was wearing a Cork armband as a mark of respect to his lost friend and colleague
The Lisgoold jockey was coolness personified as William Munny came with a strong challenge coming to the last
“It’s great to win this race for Cork owners in a race named after one of our own
I think he’s a very good horse," Townend said
"He covers so much ground and I would say you never know how quick you are going on him throughout a race
he has a huge engine and it was a big performance
"Michael was a big part of our team and lived locally and he was a Cork man as well
so he’s in everyone’s thoughts every day still
"I guess we can count ourselves lucky to have known him for the short time that we did and he was an incredible young man.”

Fermoy's Jake Carr breaks away from five Cloyne players near the sideline during the Co-Op Superstores SAHC match in Youghal
Fermoy got their Senior A Hurling Championship campaign back on track thanks to an impressive second-half performance against Cloyne in Youghal
Both sides came into this clash seeking to reignite their campaigns having come away empty-handed from their opening group two tussles with Bride Rovers and Castlelyons
The win resurrects Don O’Connell’s side’s chances of knockout qualification
but they face a stiff challenge against Bride Rovers
The Fermoy bench contingent were to provide the goods on a day when the shooting radar was a touch-off for the opening half hour
Subs Arlen Aherne – originally named to start – and James Molloy were both introduced shortly after the interval and contributed 3-2 from play between them
Further contributions came from more replacements
Molloy’s goal was sandwiched in between two Aherne green flags in the third quarter to kill any Cloyne challenge
Matters had been level at 0-8 apiece up to the 38th minute
but Aherne was on hand to slot home after Cloyne keeper Dylan Costine had made a good save from Martin Brennan
Molloy’s goal arrived after persistent work in the goalmouth area seven minutes later
Aherne grabbed his second two minutes after that
There wasn’t much for either set of supporters to shout about early on
as the scoreboard read 0-1-0-1 with 12 minutes on the clock
A first half that featured a litany of wides
did manage to improve as the clock ticked towards the short whistle
Goal chances for both were denied by sharp goalkeeping on either sides
Cloyne’s Ashley Walsh was clinical from placed ball opportunities
and although Fermoy’s Darragh Daly missed a few early frees
he steadied himself to keep his side in touch just after the quarter-hour mark
Ashley’s work was complemented by a superb Brian Walsh score
and the duo combined to help Cloyne into a 0-7 to 0-4 lead by the 23rd minute
The following 10 or so minutes were to belong to Fermoy
while the aforementioned Daly landed his only score from play
It meant Cloyne took a one-point advantage into the interval
but proceedings were to swing in Fermoy’s favour thereafter
O’Connell’s changes worked a treat and Fermoy are now looking up

The Industrial Development Agency (IDA) remains very committed to looking at how productive use can be made of the empty IDA site in Fermoy which has been idle since it opened in 2002
The IDA’s multi-million euro park in Fermoy encompasses 20 acres that can be utilised by a wide range of industries
The park on the Dublin Road has access to water
power and the main route to either Cork or Dublin
Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe recently told the Dail that some approaches have been made in relation to the site
The issue was raised by Fine Gael TD for Cork East Noel McCarthy who reiterated the need for the development of the IDA site in Fermoy
“Formerly Fitzgerald Camp army barracks the site was handed over by the Department of Defence to the IDA some 23 years ago
This is a massive shame considering the associate infrastructure is in place on site
however no tenants have been found in that time
“The site is in a prime location,” said Deputy McCarthy as he appealed for help to kickstart the development of the site
Minister I am sure you agree that the development of such a site would be an enormous boost for business in Fermoy and across the Blackwater region as a whole
“I am asking you minister to please examine the matter and to liaise with the Minister for Enterprise
Trade and Employment Peter Burke to see what can be done to finally kickstart the development of this site,” he added
Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe agreed that the IDA site in Fermoy has potential to support jobs in the locality
“I want to acknowledge the role that you are playing in trying to support the development at this IDA site in Fermoy
I agree with you regarding the potential that it does have and the important role it could play in supporting jobs in your community.”
Minister Donohoe reaffirmed that the IDA is very much committed to looking at how good and productive use can be made of this site
“While it has received some approaches in relation to it
It has not yet translated into the jobs that you are looking for and that should be there
I will raise this and indeed the IDA are aware of this
I will also make sure that Minister Burke is aware of the point that you have raised
“The IDA will continue to work with large employers to identify how we can make use of the site that you are referring to of these lands
to get more jobs into your community and to ensure that international employers continue to want to be present in Cork,” he added

Kopek Des Bordes and Patrick Mullins win for owner Charlie McCarthy with sons CJ, David and daughter-in-law Dee. Picture: Healy Racing
who runs in the opening Michael O’Sullivan Supreme Novice Hurdle
What a story it would be for Fermoy owner Charlie McCarthy who teams up with Paul Townend and Willie Mullins
All the vibes about the favourite are strong and once he gets over the preliminaries Paul Townend is sure to give this horse every chance
The vibes from the Mullins camp are very strong and they rarely get it wrong
Excitement has been building in Fermoy with such a high-profile favourite
There are plenty of similarities to the Un De Sceaux days and well-known Fermoy publican Aidan Kerins has looked after the Cheltenham previews for many years has never seen anything like the build-up in a locality steeped in racing
and everyone is just hoping the McCarthy's horse can do the business
"Kopek Des Bordes was sensational the last day and when you hear someone like Ted Walsh being blown away by his performance you know he has superstar potential," Kerins said
Jockey Michael O'Sullivan celebrates on Marine Nationale after winning the Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle
Picture: Harry Murphy/Sportsfile"Obviously
to win at this level we need everything to go right and hopefully we will be parading the horse over the bridge here in Fermoy later in the week
The Champion Hurdle is the feature race on the opening day and what a mouth-watering Anglo-Irish clash we have in store between the Nicky Henderson-trained Constitution Hill and the young pretender Brighterdaysahead for Gordon Elliot and Jack Kennedy
It promises to be a cracker with the former champion Constitution Hill the most popular horse in England
But Brighterdaysahead put in a sensational performance to claim the Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown and looks more than capable of troubling the favourite
State Man is the defending champion for Cork man Joe Donnelly and will have the assistance of the champion jockey Paul Townend
Elsewhere on the card JP McManus can get his Cheltenham off to a winning start with Majborough in the Arkle Novice Chase
McManus has an army of fancied horses across the week and the famed green and gold silks are sure to be seen plenty of times in the winner’s enclosure
Gavin Cromwell is a trainer making massive strides and there has been plenty of chat about his juvenile hurdler Total Look in the Fred Winter
The Mares Hurdle has been dominated by Mullins with Lossiemouth and Townend can claim victory here after a late switch from the Champion Hurdle
there will be plenty of local interest throughout the week with Terrence O’Brien’s Answer To Kayf running in a novice handicap chase while the aptly named Home By The Lee runs in the Stayers Hurdle also on Thursday afternoon
the Jimmy Mangan-trained Spillane’s Tower has been a late withdrawal and will run at Aintree
The Gold Cup takes centre-stage on Friday with Galopin Des Champs and Paul Townend hoping to join the greats with three Gold Cups in a row

More than 400 students from five secondary schools in County Cork have attended a road safety event in Fermoy where they heard from two people whose lives were changed forever following road traffic collisions.
The event was the first in a series of talks organised by Cork County Council in collaboration with Cork County Fire Service, The National Ambulance Service, An Garda Síochána and road safety advocates.
The transition and fifth year students heard personal stories from Mark Dalton, a 23-year-old man who suffered serious life-changing injuries after a crash and Leo Lieghio, a father whose daughter was killed in a road traffic incident.
Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Joe Carroll said,
With 60 of the 174 people tragically lost on Irish roads last year under the age of 25, it is vital that we keep the road safety message out there for the youth in our communities. I would like to thank both Mark and Leo for telling their stories which I’m sure resonated with and will have a lasting impact upon all present. The road safety message is simple, I am appealing to everyone to belt up, slow down, and avoid all distractions in the car, especially the mobile phone.
An interview with fire crews from Cork County Fire Service in Fermoy gave insights into what happens when the pager goes off and how the team responds to road traffic incidents and their aftermath.
The event also included an outdoor demonstration showing what happens at the scene of a road traffic collision with all services working together, including the Fire Service using cutting equipment and the National Ambulance Service showing students how a casualty is extracted from a vehicle using a spinal board.
Thie event is the first in a series of Cork County Council Countywide Multi-School workshops with the next one planned for Mallow in May 2025.

Commemorating 100 years since the War of Independence
Fermoy Golf Club is benefitting from an ongoing course improvement programme. Picture: Niall O'Shea
and that has continued through the Autumn as the club embarked on an impressive course improvement programme
This included an intensive sanding programme in addition to some work on tee boxes and the irrigation system
Fermoy manager Denis Twomey has been overseeing the progress and he gave some details of the current work and the next phases
“We completed the installation of a new irrigation system on all 18 holes plus practice area in 2024,” said Twomey
“We also upgraded six tee boxes and have connected irrigation to the new tee boxes
The plan is to start connecting irrigation to all tee boxes on a phased basis over the next three years.”
When this is added to the sanding programme
you can see that Fermoy is building towards providing members and guests with top class playing facilities throughout the year
Funding for the course improvement programme was thanks in part to the new club lotto that was launched earlier this year
and it’s proximity to Glanmire and Cork city
the clubs is a busy sport for members and guests
Earlier this year Fermoy launched a new members programme which was fully subscribed soon after launch and Twomey expects that while the clubs is now open for new members in 2025
there will be just a limited number of places available
Fermoy has also become a local favourite for classics
and they still have some availability for next year according to Twomey
“We are open for some classics and societies in 2025
luckily we have number of regulars which return annually including Glen Rovers
"In September we were delighted to host the inaugural Colman O’Flynn Perpetual Cup – held by local company and our neighbours South Coast Logistics (SCL) and in memory of the founder of SCL
"This was a charity event in aid of Marymount Hospice & Liam’s Lifts
It was a superb day and we look forward to hosting the event again in 2025 when it will be played in June 2025.”
Fermoy was again a venue for the Golf Ireland interclub events and hosted an area final series in August
The club can trace it’s history back to the 1880’s
like other garrison towns it was among the first clubs to be formed in Cork
The current site in the shadow of Corrin Hill has been home to the club for over 50 years
The John Harris design is a par 70 split into two nines
Harris was involved in hundreds of course projects including Shannon and the Castle Course in Lahinch
Now the course in Fermoy is known for it’s great condition and tricky greens
The back nine has many elevation changes which demands the golfers attention as they make their way back towards the clubhouse
its proving to be a hit with members and locals
“We have a new catering company in place called Albatross with bar & food menus available seven days a week and it’s open to visitors and members
and details available on Facebook and club web site."
Sara Byrne’s incredible season is continuing with one final stop left before the year finishes
The Curtis Cup star was in action last week in final qualifying for the LPGA Tour in Alabama
Byrne has secured a tour card for the second tier Epsom Tour by qualifying through the two preliminary stage
and the Douglas golfer made a bright start with rounds of 73 and 70 to sit inside the 72 hole cut line
Unfortunately for Byrne a third round 79 pushed her down the leaderboard in Saturday’s third round
and a level par fourth round on Sunday wasn’t good enough to get her inside the top 64 for Monday’s final round
Byrne was always going to be fighting the odds as a Q School rookie
but she had already earned her place on the Epsom Tour for 2025
Byrne is back in action next week at the LET qualifying
she travels to Marrakech with the hope of coming home with an LET Card for 2025
Reports have resurfaced in Fermoy of individuals walking restricted breeds off-leash in the town
It is understood that an individual was recently witnessed walking a restricted breed in the St Colman’s Sports Complex off-leash and when confronted
Locals claim that it is not the first time that dogs have been walked off-leash on the popular walkway and elsewhere within the town
One individual appealed for dog owners to ensure that dogs are kept on a leash when being walked publicly
citing the difficulties those with a fear of dogs face when encountering a dog left loose
and the danger when that person is a child or a young teen
they will actually run out onto the street to avoid a dog when they are that scared,” the individual said
Dohenys' Jerry Farrell moves away from Darragh Daly of Fermoy. Picture: Jim Coughlan
Last year’s beaten finalists Dohenys have kickstarted their campaign after getting the better of Fermoy in the McCarthy Insurance Group SAFC at Ballygarvan on Saturday evening
The Dunmanway side lost their championship opener three weeks ago and knew they had to reply in this one and they did thanks to a strong first half performance
They made use of the relatively strong wind
going into the dressing rooms nine points up at the short whistle
with his electric pace causing Fermoy untold problems
while also chipping in with three points including two frees
Fermoy also lost first day out so it was no surprise that there was no quarter asked or given here with plenty of bite
The North Cork side could have won on another day
but a slow start and wayward shooting was their downfall
They registered seven wides in the first half
In a keenly contested Group 2 encounter with so much on the line
and led 0-2 to 0-1 after seven minutes before a Barry free from an acute angle extended the Dunmanway side's advantage as they were slowly building ahead of steam
Dohenys' Rhys Coakley jumps for the ball with James O'Brien of Fermoy
Picture: Jim CoughlanBen Twomey landed a free for Fermoy
landed five points on the trot with Cork footballer Fionn Herlihy’s effort the pick of those scores
Declan O’Dwyer’s charges were showing their class and raised a green flag after 24 minutes when Herlihy’s weak shot nestled into the net following a pass by White
Twomey bisected the posts for what was a much-needed score for Fermoy
but they failed to build on it as White went down the other end to fist over a point
with Gavin Farr converting for Dohenys and Twomey doing the business for his team
Fermoy needed a strong start to the second as they were now helped by the strong wind
and even though sub David Lardner clipped over a free
The teams exchanged points before Dohenys had the chance to put the game out of sight after 42 minutes
Herlihy and White were involved which resulted in Donal Rice having a chance from close range
Gavin Farr and Shane Barry put the pressure on Martin Brennan of Fermoy
Picture: Jim CoughlanIt was a poor second half
Dohenys went into their shell and Fermoy couldn’t break it down fully as they searched for scores
Fermoy did kick two of the next three points but trailed 1-12 to 0-8 after 55 minutes
The Avondhu club did get their goal in the first minute of injury time through Twomey
Dohenys used their experience in the remaining minutes to keep their opponents at bay
Sub Paudie Crowley put the icing on the cake for the winners with a fine point
Dohenys face West Cork rivals O’Donovan Rossa in a mouthwatering derby in four weeks in the final group match while Fermoy lock horns with Kanturk
