Plans to locate a gaming arcade in the village of Finglas in north Dublin have been met with widespread opposition
Locals say they are concerned it could cause harm to the already disadvantaged area and have appealed Dublin City Council's decision to grant planning permission for the development to An Bord Pleanála
Finglas has a history dating back to the 10th century and has been a suburb of Dublin since the 1700s
Finglas village has experienced much decline
most new businesses are welcomed to the area
locals and community groups all submitted objections to a gaming arcade being opened in the area
Philomena Byrne Murphy of Finglas Tidy Towns said she believes the area deserves better
feel Finglas definitely does not need a gaming arcade
We're striving to build the village up but our worries are that it's on Main Street right beside the doctor's surgery
it just doesn't gel in with the village street."
"We need restaurants for night time for people to come into the village
We're trying to promote businesses to come in and I think this will affect businesses coming into the village
"I think the people of Finglas deserve more variety of businesses and cafes and shops
We'd like to see a cultural place as well for people to come and we could use it between us all
Last year a similar development proposed for Dolphin's Barn was turned down
Politicians from across the political spectrum think the same should happen in Finglas
who was among those who objected said he believes the decision by Dublin City Council goes against the spirit of its own development plan for the city
"We were surprised to see it passed by Dublin City Council planners because in the development plan
actually it states that there'll be a presumption against gaming arcades
A similar decision was actually given permission in 2012 in Finglas village and on appeal
An Bord Pleanála actually rejected [it] then so we hope that would happen [in] this case
But I do think having just a gaming facility
It's not what our village needs and wants," he said
Addiction is an issue in the area and service providers say an arcade will only make that worse
which was one of a number of support services to lodge an objection says opposition to the arcade is a moral issue
"We see first hand the devastation that gambling addiction brings
We often see spikes in presentations for our services after certain events like Cheltenham
That tells us that gambling and drug and alcohol addiction
the developers said an arcade would enhance vitality
economic activity and footfall in Finglas village
It also said it will support local businesses and help improve the issue of dereliction in the area
It said its plan to operate from 10am to 10pm daily will accommodate "a wide range of customer needs throughout the day"
And it said it will create significant employment opportunities
including the creation of eight full-time jobs upon completion
contributing to the local economy and community
The developers have not responded to a request for comment about the latest objections

CamogieA short story from Dublin and Kilkenny – ‘We appreciate the tradition of the game but skorts are not fit for purpose’It’s the short story that has everyone talking
Ali BrackenSat 3 May 2025 at 19:10THE Dublin crime boss christened ‘Mr Flashy’ is this weekend on 23-hour prison lock-up - having lost control of the gang of drug dealers he once ruled with an iron fist
whose prison location cannot be identified by court order
is under severe threat because of the number of criminals who want him dead
The 32-year-old was sentenced last week to five-and-a-half years imprisonment for firearm offences
His jailing follows a decade of chaos and violence unleashed by the criminal
described as “ruthless and volatile” by one investigator
The Gucci Gang he once led has now been split into two factions
Both are “heavily opposed” to Glen Ward and his associates
who have essentially been left “in the wilderness” aside from a few close associates who remain loyal
a “battle of wills” between these two factions has been ongoing
has now asserted his authority and has effectively taken control of the gang once led by Mr Flashy
This breakaway criminal outfit have forged an alliance with drug dealers linked to murdered Blanchardstown criminal Tristan Sherry
a strategic move that sources say have given the gang dominance in the area
The “new Gucci Gang” are primarily involved in the sale and supply of heroin and crack cocaine trade in Finglas and Blanchardstown
Young men who rose the ranks under Mr Flashy’s criminal enterprise have now “entirely turned against him” as up-and-coming players in the underworld have taken over
The most remarkable thing about Glen Ward is that he’s still alive
There were several failed attempts to murder him over the past couple of years
He is now completely isolated from his own gang
no backing from the Kinahan Cartel anymore and he will find it hard to re-establish himself when he gets out of prison in about four years time,” according to an informed source
“But him being locked up hasn’t solved anything
Glen Ward was born in Ballymun but his family later relocated to Finglas
he was a promising young footballer as a boy and well into his teenage years
But his head was soon turned by older criminals and by his late teens
Ward was deeply entrenched in local drug dealing
One person he looked up to was Karl Hyland
a nephew of murdered Finglas crime boss Martin ‘Marlo’ Hyland
It was Hyland who introduced him to the world of designer clothes and watches
a lifestyle that Mr Flashy soon embraced when he later took over as the leader of the so-called Gucci Gang
gardai were regularly collating Ward in the company of Trevor Byrne
a violent criminal from Finglas who worked for the Kinahan cartel and is now serving a 17-and-a-half-year sentence for firearms
He was also arrested over the feud murder of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch’s brother
Byrne’s sudden disappearance from the organised crime scene in Dublin left an opening in the Finglas area
as drugs flooded in from the Kinahan cartel and needed to be sold
Almost overnight Glen Ward filled this void and took over as the leader of the Gucci Gang
He took up the reins with “enthusiasm and vigour”
Today's News in 90 Seconds - May 3rd
both in its drug dealing expansion into Blanchardstown and his penchant for violence,” said the same source
“He was really into his designer man-bags and bum bags
Ward was effectively working as the leader of an outpost for the Kinahan cartel and quickly became a key distributor of mainly heroin and cocaine in the Finglas area
bravado and hot-headed temperament soon led him into conflict with other local criminals
He was quickly embroiled in a dispute with criminals based in Corduff
There was also trouble within his own ranks
caused fallout within his own associates of mainly young men in their late teens and early 20s
The gang’s headquarters was run from his home in 15a Ratoath Drive in Finglas
They were locally known as the “15a crew” and as well as the Gucci Gang
As Ward began to flex his muscles on the gangland scene
his gang’s headquarters began to be regularly targeted in shootings
Mr Flashy soon had to install an extensive security system including bullet-proof windows and fortified doors
gardai began to forensically examine what potential Glen Ward might have to cause even further headaches in the world of organised crime
local detectives built up a clear profile on Mr Flashy and his impact on the criminal landscape in the capital
Officers identified 22 key associates aligned to him who were also considered “key players” in the underworld
Among them were up-and-coming young drug dealers such as Zach Parker (23)
as well as Iranian criminal Hamid Sanambar (41)
These three men would all soon die in a hail of bullets on the streets of the capital
Mr Flashy remained active and “thriving” in the drugs game
However the murder of his one-time friend James Whelan in April 2022 was a turning point and led to mistrust and a splintering within the Gucci Gang
was linked to this killing of his former friend
This murder sparked a major split in the Gucci Gang
essentially splitting it into three factions
“The murder of James Whelan was a major turning point,” explained a separate source
“Glen Whelan will be out of prison in a few years and will still in his early 30s

The Special Criminal Court has sentenced Glen Ward, a criminal referred to as “Mr Flashy” during a recent High Court case, to 5½ years in prison for firing a semi-automatic during a house party.
Ms Justice Melanie Greally said the firearm Ward used during the party in Finglas, Dublin was powerful and capable of causing serious injury or death.
The judge noted that gardaí found the weapon alongside a “sizeable cache” of ammunition. Video footage retrieved from a phone showed Ward, having already fired the gun, encouraging his younger brother Eric O’Driscoll to take and discharge the firearm, she said.
Ward (32) previously pleaded guilty to a charge that on January 1st, 2022, at an address in Finglas, he possessed or had control of a .223 calibre Remington AR-15 semi-automatic rifle in circumstances giving rise to a reasonable inference that he did not have it for a lawful purpose.
O’Driscoll (23) pleaded guilty to possession of the same gun.
Gardaí discovered the rifle alongside a military submachine gun during a search of a house in Finglas in February 2022.
Ward was named in the High Court as the leader of the north Dublin organised crime group known as ‘The Gucci Gang’, so-called due to members having a liking for designer goods.
The group was very active in the drugs market from its base in Finglas, with members regarded as dangerous criminals and high priority targets for the Garda’s specialist units.
Ms Justice Greally said that in June of that year, gardaí responded to reports that shots had been fired at a taxi on the Tolka Valley Road. When they searched the taxi, they found a phone that they were later able to connect to O’Driscoll.
Analysts discovered a video clip on the phone in which Ward could be seen pointing the AR-15 rifle towards the sky and firing. Ms Justice Greally said a number of young people were present and watching. Ward, she said, then handed the firearm to O’Driscoll, who fired three shots into the air.
In passing sentence, Judge Greally said there is a “certain unreality” to the suggestion that Ward had only a fleeting involvement with the firearm.
However, she accepted that there was a “dearth of evidence of his relationship to the firearm” and his plea was accepted based on what can be seen in the video clip.
In mitigation, she considered the negative impact spending his first seven months in prison on 23-hour lock-up with his brother had on Ward’s mental health. A prison governor’s report provided to the court stated that Ward’s behaviour has improved recently.
The court also noted that Ward had undertaken not to associate with six individuals whose names were handed into the court.
Ms Justice Greally sentenced him to six years and three months but suspended the final nine months. The defendant must keep the peace and be of good behaviour for 12 months after his release or he could serve the suspended portion of the sentence.
The court previously jailed O’Driscoll for five years.
In a statement after the sentencing, Det Supt Paul Murphy said An Garda Síochána acknowledges the convictions and sentences imposed by the Special Criminal Court on O’Driscoll and Ward.
He praised the commitment of detectives based in Finglas and said criminals like O’Driscoll and Ward “act and believe that they are above the law”.
“My message to young people in our communities is that there is nothing positive that these criminals can offer you and their actions are motivated by greed and are only self-serving. You are disposable to them.”

GardaÍ investigating a blaze that engulfed a home on Deanstown Green in Finglas on Friday morning are now probing it as a suspected arson attack
Sources have confirmed to the Sunday World that officers investigating the fire
are treating it as an incident of ‘criminal damage.’
A motive for the attack is now being sought
One line of inquiry is that the blaze may have been deliberately started as a revenge attack against a relative of the innocent property-owner
“The suspicion is that this relative has made a number of enemies due to his own criminal activities,” a local source told the Sunday World
“He is suspected of being behind a campaign of thefts in the area and has amassed a lot of enemies because of this.”
The location of Friday morning’s suspected arson attack is just a couple of hundred yards from the home of Glen Ward – the man identified in court as the gangster nicknamed ‘Mr Flashy’
the attack is not believed to be linked to Ward or his rivals – and none of the people living in the home are involved with the so-called Flashy gang
Ward (32) pleaded guilty last month in the Special Criminal Court to possessing a Remington AR-15 semi- automatic rifle at his North Dublin home in February 2022
Ward earned the nickname Mr Flashy because of his love for designer clothes
He directed the activities of a gang known as the ‘Gucci Gang.’
The gang has been involved in a number of violent gangland feuds which led to the deaths of both Zachary Parker and Sean Little and their associates Jordan Davis and Hamid Sanambar.”
also pleaded guilty to possession of the same gun as his more infamous brother
During a sentencing hearing for O’Driscoll last year
it was heard that during a search of a home in Finglas in February 2022
gardaí recovered the semi-automatic rifle along with a military grade sub-machine gun and ammunition
The guns were found to be in good condition and were successfully fired by a Garda ballistics examiner
Det Insp Kelly said analysts found a video clip on the phone in which O’Driscoll could be seen taking the AR-15 rifle from another man and firing it from the rear of a home in Finglas
A source told the Sunday World that following the incarceration of Ward
people hoped criminality in the area would die down
“People are hoping this attack is an isolated event and not the start of a fresh round of tit for tat violence,” the source said
Gardaí have opened an investigation after a man who formerly worked as a bodyguard for singer Rihanna was injured in a shooting in Finglas, Dublin on Wednesday.
The target, named locally as Geoffrey Keating, has for years claimed to be under threat from local criminals who wrongly believe he supplied information to An Garda Síochána.
The 46-year-old Dubliner, who is based in Finglas, was head of security for Rihanna in 2012 and 2013 before he and his partner became involved in a dispute with the artist, resulting in litigation.
Gardaí on Wednesday confirmed they were investigating an incident in which a firearm was discharged on Woodbank Drive at about 10.30am.
The injured man was taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown to be treated for injuries “believed to be non-life-threatening at this time”, the force said in a statement.
The area where the incident occurred was sealed-off and gardaí appealed to anyone who was there between 9am and 10.30am on Wednesday to contact Finglas Garda station. They are especially keen to speak to anyone who has video footage, including dashcam recordings, taken in the area around that time.
In 2014, Mr Keating claimed he was defamed in a series of false statements contained in an email sent by Rihanna in July 2013 to him and his partner. Mr Keating denied the allegations made against him, saying the statements in the email gravely injured his reputation and his business.
He launched proceedings seeking damages for alleged defamation over the email and also sought orders including one directing that Rihanna publish a correction of the alleged defamation.
However, a notice of discontinuance was lodged in the case in March 2015 bringing the proceedings to an end.
Last year, proceedings taken by Mr Keating’s partner, Dana Kavanagh (49), against Rihanna over the 2013 email and another communication were settled. She had also sued over a phone call the singer allegedly made to Ms Kavanagh’s sister-in-law in relation to the same matter.
Ms Kavanagh had claimed a business she built up with Mr Keating, called Geoff Keating Media, had been destroyed by the allegations.

Developers and investors looking for ready-to-go opportunities in Dublin’s residential market may be interested in the sale of the former Bottom of the Hill pub in Finglas village
which sits on a 0.2-hectare (0.49-acre) site
is being offered to the market with full planning permission for an apartment scheme through agent Lisney Commercial Real Estate at a guide price of €2.25 million
The plan approved by An Bord Pleanála provides for a five-storey, mixed-use development that includes 48 apartments (three three-beds, 31 two-beds and 14 one-beds), a 240sq m hospitality unit and a 140sq m retail unit.

The Green line began operations from Sandyford in South Dublin to St Stephen’s Green 20 years ago
An additional southside stop was opened in 2010
bringing the line to Brides Green in Cherrywood
The line was extended northwards across the city to Broombridge in Cabra in 2017
an area dominated by two-storey social housing developments largely built in the 1970s; then on to Finglas Village; to St Margaret’s Road
which will serve the new Jamestown housing development and existing estates
before terminating close to the M50 at Charlestown
an area dominated by a shopping centre and high-density apartment schemes built over the past 20 years
The journey time from Charlestown to College Green will be approximately 30 minutes
head of public transport and capital projects at TII
said the line would be the fastest transport choice for Finglas residents seeking to get to the city
“Luas Finglas brings light rail to an area where car ownership is very low
and doesn’t have good connections to the city centre
or the rail network at the moment,” Mr Carbone said
Luas passengers will have the option of transferring to the Irish Rail network with trains running from Maynooth to Connolly and the Docklands
Permission was granted earlier this year to upgrade this line to Dart strand
[ State paid consultants €514,000 for 33 pages of Dublin metro plan reportsOpens in new window ]
“Broombridge is one of the most seamless rail interchanges we have. By connecting Finglas to the railway you are creating the possibility of trips in all directions, and imagine the transformative effect this will have with Dart+ coming into play,” Mr Carbone said.
The Luas extension will correspondingly increase passenger numbers on the rail line, he said: “Ridership on Iarnród Éireann from 2016, before the cross-city line, to 2019 grew 187 per cent at Broombridge so we can expect that will increase also.”
The Luas extension also benefits the Green line as a whole, he said, by delivering more “balance” to a service which is still more heavily used by southside passengers, typically alighting in the city, leaving emptier trams on the northside leg.
“It optimises the use of the capacity on the Green line by delivering more balanced passenger flow both north and south of the city centre. It will in fact increase southbound demand in the am peak by almost 50 per cent.”
Following the receipt of planning permission, the line is expected to be built within four years.
“In Ireland, it takes a long time to secure the planning permission, but after, we tend to build on time and on budget,” Mr Carbone said.

Amy DonohoeFri 25 Apr 2025 at 14:39A team of cheerleaders from Finglas has created history by winning the world championship title in the US
during the boom of High School Musical and Bring It On
are now world champions after winning the International Open CoEd Level 4 NT in Florida
believes that their secret sauce for success was focusing on themselves
“We were founded in 2008 by Hayden McGuirk during the boom of High School Musical and Bring It On
He started in Finglas and then throughout the years
I took over the club in 2020 and we've been going ever since,” Ms O’Reilly told the Irish Independent
We've been doing various competitions for a number of years
This was our second year at the All-Star World Championships
so we knew it'd be more hectic having to balance the two teams and training
but we did everything we physically could to prepare
we trained for a day and then we were straight in competition
I don't even think we had time to think about it
“We went into the competition almost knowing that we would be the underdogs
We come from a part of the world where it's relatively small
It's only really starting to grow right now
“We wanted to go out and showcase good quality
Our focus was solely on that and not on anything else
“We were more focused on what we were doing and how we could do the best rather than focusing on the competition and who we were against
They pride themselves on being Ireland’s leading cheerleading program; now that they’ve won the world title
the group is hoping more people will understand what cheerleading actually is
“Our season will run from May/ June all the way through
there's really no time off,” Ms O’Reilly added
“I feel it's a hard battle to sway people away from that stereotypical Pom Poms and chanting
but then it's hard to explain what we do to other people
there is one more competition left this season in Glasgow and then we will be straight back into try-outs and add new people to the roster if that's needed and then hopefully
we’ll head back over to the World Championships next April.”

will be the team’s guest of honour at their match against Senegal at the Aviva Stadium in June
A video posted to social media shows Collins
welcoming Mason and his younger brother Scott to the team’s training session
“I don’t know how you do that but the lads wanted to give you this,” he said
before presenting the boy with a signed jersey
beamed as he received the gift and was invited along to their game on June 6th
“He is looking forward to starting in a new school with his two younger brothers
There’s no way we could send him back to that school after what happened,” Mason’s father Stephen Geraghty told the Sunday Independent
Adding that he is considering legal action against the school where his son was stabbed
saying that his son has suffered psychological trauma and may need counselling for years as a result of the attack
and his brother Scott (right) is presented with a signed jersey by Nathan Collins
“I will take this to the highest court in the land if I have to
ever happen again — 99.9% of children know not to bring a knife to school.”
a child under the age of 12 is incapable of committing an offence
including murder and serious sexual assaults
so there will be no criminal investigation into the stabbing
“The boy is suspected of having brought a knife he found in the kitchen of his home to the school
“If it’s not the fault of the boy who did it
He is going to have psychological issues for years
A MOTHER whose young son was hospitalised after he was stabbed at school admits the youngster is lucky to be alive
The 11-year-old boy was rushed to hospital following the horror incident at a north Dublin school earlier this week
He underwent surgery and has been in intensive care since but primarily as a precautionary measure
having suffered serious injuries that required treatment
His parents told The Irish Sun they were grateful for the support they had received from hospital staff and members of the public
The youngster’s mum said: “My son is on the mend thankfully
he’s still in ICU and he’s lucky to be alive
“We would like to thank the staff at Temple Street Children’s Hospital; they have been absolutely fantastic from the word go
Parents of fellow pupils at St Finian’s National School in Finglas were called to collect their children after the terrifying drama on Tuesday
The other child involved in the incident is suspected to have brought the weapon onto school grounds
The Department of Education, the school itself and the gardai said they were working to ensure professional help is available for the children in the schools and particularly for those who witnessed it.
The child who produced the knife is under 12 and therefore generally cannot be charged with a criminal offence
The gardai initially engaged with State agencies over the incident but have since stepped away
The Children’s Act reads: “There is a rebuttable presumption that a child who is not less than 12 but under 14 years of age is incapable of committing an offence because the child did not have the capacity to know that the act or omission concerned was wrong.”
Reacting to Tuesday's incident, Sinn Fein TD Dessie Ellis branded the stabbing a “new low” as he passed on his best wishes to the injured boy and his family
Ellis told The Irish Sun: “The fact that someone was attacked in a school in a safe place for kids
“The only thing I can say on this is my sympathy goes out to the families and to the young child and hopefully that young child will recover quickly
“This is a new low in terms of what has happened over the years
“We haven’t had attacks in schools like this internally
"You’ve often had things happen outside of schools but never in the school precincts
Residents in Finglas have gambling concerns over plans to open a gaming arcade in the village
They say there are already enough gambling outlets in the area
even though the number of bookmakers has declined by 47%
Newstalk reporter Josh Crosbie told The Pat Kenny Show that "even the parish priest has stepped in now”
“[Residents] feel that there are already enough gambling outlets in the area – and to be honest
“The main players have two outlets each and not far from the centre of the village
five in total and locals are now frustrated over a proposal for an arcade amusement to open on the main street
but residents have already been coming out against it.”
Local resident Donna told Josh that is strongly opposed to the proposal
“We’ve already had so much anti-social behaviour
it’s unreal – we just don’t need it,” she said
“[It would] attract anything and everything
“Somewhere for people to just stand around and do nothing
According to statistics published by the Health Research Board in 2022, those living in the most deprived areas were also the most likely to be an at-risk or problem gambler
The Pobal deprivation index classifies areas of Finglas as being disadvantaged or very disadvantaged
gambling addiction counsellor Tony O’Reilly told Josh that there could be other factors at play as to why gambling outlets are seen more in disadvantaged areas
“Maybe it’s because it’s easier to get shops in those areas,” he said
“Because if you look at disadvantaged areas
sometimes you will have a lot of euro shops or a lot of vaping shops and phone shops
or even shops where you can go in and trade goods for cash
“They probably do target certain areas... But nowadays they can target anyone because everyone has smartphones
“Whether it’s someone from a disadvantaged area or not, everyone will have a smartphone.”
Mr O’Reilly said he would like to see stricter planning rules around the limit of certain outlets in an area to avoid normalising gambling
The Irish Bookmakers Association has said that the number of shops across the country has gone from 1,385 in 2008 to just 731 at the end of last year
Those behind the proposed arcade in Finglas have said that it will create eight full-time jobs and bring a building that has been vacant for more than two years back to life

Fianna Fáil TD Paul McAuliffe has started a petition against the gaming arcade in Finglas
Social Democrats TD Rory Hearne is against the proposed arcade
Amy DonohoeTue 22 Apr 2025 at 09:45A Dublin TD has set up a petition against a proposed gaming arcade which would replace a former bike shop and furniture store in Finglas
The planning application for the ground floor of 44 Main Street
was lodged with Dublin City Council on February 13
The proposed development reads: “Change of use of the ground floor from commercial unit to gaming/amusement arcade with ancillary site works.”
local businesses and residents who are leading the opposition to a proposed gaming arcade
formal objections have already been lodged to Dublin City Council
with an appeal now being submitted to An Bord Pleanála
“This development is not in line with the community’s vision for Finglas,” Mr McAuliffe said
“We want a main street that supports families
more vibrant village – not one shaped by gambling and anti-social behaviour
“The arcade does not align with the Dublin City Development Plan’s focus on sustainable
“It risks damaging the character of the village and setting a harmful precedent
It’s too close to schools and youth services and could increase late-night disturbances
An Bord Pleanála can help protect our village by rejecting this proposal
“Formal appeals can only be lodged by those who originally objected
But this petition will be cited in the appeal being lodged – your voice can help show how strongly felt our objections are,” he added
Dublin City Council has granted planning permission for a gaming/amusement arcade in Finglas village
despite objections from myself and others on behalf of Finglas residents
have been on to me today very concerned about this
“As has been pointed out by the Finglas Cabra Drug and Alcohol Task Force – an organisation that does great work in providing support for families of people with gambling-related issues – a gaming/amusement arcade will normalise gambling
“A development like this is in direct conflict with the Dublin City Development Plan which prohibits amusement centres in residential areas
Finglas Village already has five bookmaking shops
is this really a development that residents need
“There are serious concerns among residents that the development of a gambling-related business such as the one proposed could result in increased anti-social behaviour
“There are many services near the proposed development which cater to the needs for vulnerable people
“Finglas Village would be much better served by developments such as youth and community spaces
We will continue to work on stopping this.”
Dublin City Council and An Bord Pleanála have been contacted for further comment
Pockets of the park have become meeting points for drug users and dealers
says junior parkrun organiser Stephen Keeler
When Stephen Keeler sent photos of syringes and two knives in the grass at Finglas’s Mellowes Park to councillors and Gardaí recently
“There was a bit of a scramble.” Someone came and got them
who organises a junior parkrun there on Sundays
says local residents have complained for years about how unsafe the park can feel at times
but also the way pockets of the park have become meeting points for people to use drugs or deal
Indeed in June 2019, residents in Finglas said they generally felt least safe when “going to the park” in the neighbourhood, and “taking exercise” in the evening, according to a survey commissioned by the Finglas Safety Forum
“going to the park” also ranked lowest for feelings of safety
Meanwhile, one of the aims of Dublin City Council’s sports plan is to get more people out and about in parks
“It’s a lovely morning,” said Keeler last Friday a little before 11am
there were just a handful of people around – a couple pushing a pram
a guy in high-viz staring ahead as he jogged loops
Mellowes Park is perfect for a junior parkrun given its 1km loop
But along the edge of the park are a few entrances
Organisers send a marshall to each gate to stop kids from running out
pointing towards the northern end of the space
That is near where people using and dealing sometimes congregate
“Who do I send down to this gate here?” he says
On the western edge of the park is a raised concrete slab where people often pause to use
scrumpled food packaging and an abandoned sleeping bag
Community gardaí come down on a Sunday morning to the parkrun if they are on shift
But he has only once seen the guards in the park by chance when he was walking by
Requests for more patrols get the same response from both the council and guards
He also wants to get rid of secluded areas where people gather to use
In June last year, more than 250 people signed an online petition put together by the Casement Road Residents Committee calling on the council to get rid of the hedges along the park’s western edge
“Parents and guardians would be able to see their children playing in the park
of the call for a park warden: “I’d absolutely support that.”
a redesign with changes to the hedge and the ledge could play a part
“To make it a bit more visible for people.”
the chair of the Finglas-Cabra Local Drug and Alcohol Taskforce
said that bins – ones that you could put needles in and couldn’t be pried open – were planned at one point
Most of the park is just a massive patch of grass
“It would be nice to see the enhancement of the park.”
is a kids’ playground and some exercise equipment
Dublin City Council has been making big changes to Kildonan Park
which lies about 400m west of Mellowes Park – with landscaping
gym equipment and a small basketball court
Some changes in Mellowes Park would be helpful too
Dublin City Council’s sports plan puts an emphasis on the need to make physical activity a social norm
It also stresses ramping up use of existing spaces
Under the plan, which was launched in May last year, an outdoor recreation officer would be assigned to oversee the assessment of all green and open spaces and parks in the city
They would develop “activation plans” for specific spaces and parks
Dublin City Council hasn’t responded to a query sent on Friday
asking if that post had been filled and whether any activation plans had yet been drawn up
Keeler says he thinks the junior parkrun on Sundays is the only organised activity in Mellowes Park at the moment
“Years ago there used to be football clubs that play here,” he says
There’s a Gaelic pitch and goals on the grass
where teams train sometimes in summer and there are kickarounds
Mellowes Park is likely to see changes in the years ahead
In November, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) applied to An Bord Pleanála for planning permission for the Finglas Luas project
which would extend the light-rail line from Broombridge to Finglas
The route shows one stop to the north of Mellowes Park
It would run through the eastern edge of the park
TII has said the route “could be operational by 2031
said that when he raises how the layout of Mellowes Park could be improved
the council’s parks department says it is waiting for the Finglas Luas
as part of the consultation process for its planning application
including those involved with Mellowes Park
and is committed to working with local residents
“We worked to understand how people use public spaces along the Luas Finglas route in order to identify opportunities to enhance the public realm for everyone
not just passengers on the trams,” they said
They have made several architectural and landscaping proposals in the design to respond to these issues raised by people they met with
which will run on an attractive grass track through Mellowes Park
will bring an element of security and movement we hope will help make the park a safer and more active space
“Areas disturbed during the Luas works will be reinstated and more trees planted as part of the scheme’s landscape.”
the project proposes getting rid of the footbridge in the park as part of a plan to reprioritise local roads and build at-grade crossings
“This will provide safer and easier pedestrian access to the Luas stop
which will help reconnect the community,” they said
three men perched for a moment on the edge of a raised stone slab on the edge of Mellowes Park
They stay for a few minutes before moving on
chair of the Finglas-Cabra Local Drug and Alcohol Taskforce
says that in situations such as Mellowes Park
the issue that always returns is that measures can just push people using drugs to somewhere else nearby
says he thinks that is what has happened in recent months even – that Garda activities elsewhere have maybe pushed people into Mellowes Park
raises the same concern and how to respond humanely to all
Underlying the disquiet around Mellowes Park is a much broader issue about the government’s response to drug use in communities
“The whole approach to drugs is a failure.”
Reddy says one response to consider to reduce drug-related litter and improve feelings of safety could be something like the supervised-use centre in the city centre but for Finglas
and talking to people who use drugs in the open in the area
There are great drug-support services in Finglas but they can only do so much
“If we could create more points of contact between people using drugs and services.”
He isn’t sure where such a centre could go
“I’m not suggesting we put it near the park.”
Connolly says he doesn’t know about that idea
but outreach services certainly play a role
it would certainly stem some of the issues.”
the chair of the local drug and alcohol taskforce
says there are very active outreach teams and services in Finglas
But some people just aren’t in a place to engage
Another challenge raised by both Hoey and Reddy is the flow of people who come into Finglas to buy and use
“There’s a lot of people coming in from rural areas,” said Hoey
Hoey says there is a lot of engagement between local communities
who respond quickly to reports they may get
“Everybody is kind of sick and tired of contacting the guards.”

In a statement on ESB PowerCheck
(cited by The Irish Sun) the provider said:
“We apologise for the loss of supply

Geoff was hit by five pellets in the back of his head
Popstar Rihanna’s former bodyguard Geoff Keating was hit by five pellets in the back of the head in Wednesday morning’s brazen daylight gun attempt on his life
The 46-year-old former soldier who was rushed to Blanchardstown hospital in the wake of the attack at 10.20 am on Woodbank Avenue
Finglas spoke out this evening to blast the gunman
Geoff – who warned during an interview with the Sunday World last August that a €15,000 hit had been placed on his head by a jailed gangland criminal – also said: “I want them to know that they failed
“I’m still alive and I’ll be here to spend Christmas with my family.”
Speaking of his near brush with death at the hands of a would-be assassin
Geoff said he had been on his way to purchase cigarettes when he was targeted
“I didn’t see who this to me,” Geoff who is now recovering told this newspaper
“They must have been hiding behind a wall in one of the gardens
“The doctors reckon they must have been between 30 and 50 feet away when they took the shot or I’d be dead
“My guard was down and I wasn’t worried about anything because nothing strange had happened in so long
“I believe the person who put out the hit on me is the one who is responsible for this
“But whoever did this this morning was an amateur
“They bottled it because they didn’t try and shoot me again
“It was strange because when the bang rung out I was in an area in the middle of the road where I could see for 50 feet around me
I turned around and there was nobody there
“So they had to have been hiding behind a wall
“What saved me the doctor said was the fact the pellets must have been wet so it was probably an old gun and a damaged cartridge.”
Our exclusive pictures show how Geoff was hit by five pellets in the back of the head and these will have to remain embedded in his scalp and skull for the time being
“One of them is lodged right in the skull but it would cause too much damage to try and take them out,” Geoff continued
“They’re hoping some of them might come out by themselves but they’ll bring me back up to the hospital in two or three weeks for another scan to see if they’ve shifted in any way.”
Geoff said he has been worried that something like this might happen for the past two years and this is the reason he chose to speak out publicly about the threat against him in August
“I warned the authorities something like this would happen and now it has,” he said
“Thanks be to God the hit was for only €15,000
Geoff said the gardaí descended on the area in force within less than a minute
“Whoever who did it must have ran away very quickly,” he said
I pushed two builders who were in the line of fire out of the way because I didn’t want them getting hurt but the second shot never came
“He (the gunman) was obviously too afraid to come and take that shot
“That I can’t understand … an assassin with just one cartridge in a shotgun
“All I have is superficial injuries to be honest
“I didn’t even have to get a blood transfusion.”
Geoff said in the wake of the shooting and having failed to establish the gunman’s location
“I got back and I said to Dana (Geoff’s partner): ‘Call 999 … I’m after being shot
“She saw the blood running down the back of my head and she was great … she didn’t panic
“She rang them and I went into the bathroom to make sure that half my head wasn’t missing
“I went back down then and out to the front of the house to engage if this person had come down after me and it seemed like every guard in Finglas was outside my front door
Geoff said after being assessed by paramedics at the scene
he was taken to Blanchardstown hospital where he was examined
“The guards gave me an escort to the hospital but I was grand,” he continued
“My eyes were a bit dilated and there was a fair bit of blood but I walked into the hospital on my own two feet
“I actually stopped for a smoke outside the hospital before I went in
“Then I went in and I was x-rayed and assessed straight away
“One of the pellets is stuck in my skull but it hasn’t fractured it so I’m alright
“It’s not painful but I suppose the adrenalin is keeping me going
“At least the gardaí are taking it really seriously now and it’s going to be dealt with
“I’m not connected to crime in any way and everyone knows that
“All I have ever done in Finglas is to try to make this community safer.”
Geoff Keating when he was Rihanna’s bodyguard
Warning of a threat to his life last August
whose most high-profile role in private security saw him employed as head of security on pop singer Rihanna’s Diamonds tour in 2012 and 2013
revealed that he received information that there is a €15,000 hit on his head
He alleged the threat against him was linked to false claims circulating in Dublin branding him a garda informant
Mr Keating said he was given a name of the individual behind the threat by a former prisoner who was released from a prison in the capital during the summer
He also said the former prisoner’s claims mirrored those of a separate individual who had contacted him the previous day
I hear they’re saying a lot of things about you’.”
Keating said he had contacted gardaí on numerous occasions by phone and email after being told of the alleged threat
“I’m very worried about this,” he said at the time
I’ve gone back into security mode in my house
“I have top-of-the-range CCTV around the house so I have all approaches to the house covered
“If I was advising a family who were in this situation
I’d be advising them to do a whole load to shore up security
“People should not be put under this level of threat!”
In a statement issued in the wake of this morning’s shooting
a garda spokesperson confirmed: "Gardaí are investigating the discharge of a firearm
was conveyed to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.”
“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward
“Any road users or pedestrians who were in the Woodbank area of Finglas
and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make it available

Gardaí at the scene on Tuesday morning of a fatal assault on a man on Dunsink Green, Finglas
is thought to have been stabbed and officers are investigating if the attack is linked to a local row
The man was confronted by people in the front garden of his house on Dunsink Green
His homicide follows the death of his son six years ago in a motorbike accident
While his son was embroiled in a violent feud with a local gang boss
gardaí do not believe the father’s death is connected to gangland
Garda sources stress it is very early in their investigations and that a case conference was ongoing this morning
Emergency services were called to the area shortly before 12.30am
They found a man on the ground and provided initial treatment before bringing him to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown
Surgeons were not able to save him and he was pronounced dead
It is believed he suffered a number of stab wounds
pending the arrival of the Garda Technical Bureau
which began a forensic examination outside the home this morning
The Office of the State Pathologist was notified
A full post mortem will provide further details on the injuries inflicted on the man and will inform the garda investigation
Gardaí are conducting local inquiries and checking to see if any of the homes have cameras
In addition they are checking local streets and roads for camera footage
gardaí suspect the attack may be linked to a local row
They will begin the process of trying to identify who was there
which in turn may give clues as to what it was about
Investigating gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward
They are particularly appealing to those with video footage and motorists who may have dashcam footage from the area at the time to contact them
Anyone with information is asked to contact Finglas Garda Station at (01) 666 7500
the Garda Confidential Line at (1800) 666 111 or any Garda Station
"Investigations are ongoing," a garda spokesperson said.

A Dublin man has pleaded guilty to possession of a semi-automatic rifle at a house in Finglas where video footage from a phone seized by gardai showed the weapon being fired
Glen Ward (32) appeared briefly this morning at the three-judge
He entered a guilty plea to the charge that on January 1
2022 at an address in Finglas he was in possession of or had control of a .223 calibre Remington AR-15 semi-automatic rifle in circumstances giving rise to a reasonable inference that he did not have it for a lawful purpose
Eric O'Driscoll (23) previously pleaded guilty to possession of the same gun
During a sentencing hearing for O'Driscoll last year
Det Inspector Damien Kelly told the court that during a search of a home in Finglas in February 2022
gardai recovered the semi-automatic rifle along with a military grade sub-machine gun and ammunition
The guns were found to be in good condition and were successfully fired by a garda ballistics examiner
gardai conducted an unrelated search of a taxi on the Tolka Valley Road and found a bank card in Eric O'Driscoll's name and a phone that they were later able to connect to the defendant
Det Insp Kelly said analysts found a video clip on the phone in which O'Driscoll could be seen taking the AR-15 rifle from another man and firing it from the rear of a home in Finglas
the firearms that had been seized in February 2022 were filmed having been laid out on a table at the same address in Finglas
Ms Justice Melanie Greally adjourned sentencing until a date in April this year

Ken Foy and Robin SchillerWed 18 Dec 2024 at 14:54Gardai are investigating after former high profile bodyguard Geoffrey Keating suffered injuries in a shooting in Dublin this morning
The 46-year-old was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries following the incident in Finglas
It’s understood a shotgun was used in the attack
A large garda presence was still at the scene at Woodbank Drive this afternoon
Keating has been under active threat for a number of years
has previously publicly said there was a contract on his life
Gardaí confirmed the incident in a statement today
"Gardaí are investigating the discharge of a firearm
at approximately 10.30am,” a spokesperson said
“A man (aged in his 40s) was conveyed to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown for treatment of injuries believed to be non life-threatening at this time.”
“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this incident to come forward,” the spokesperson said
Any road users or pedestrians who were in the Woodbank area of Finglas
Anyone with information is asked to contact Finglas Garda Station on (01) 666 7500
Mr Keating launched defamation proceedings against Rihanna
he claimed he was defamed in a series of allegedly false statements contained in an email sent to him and his wife by the defendant in July 2013
He claimed the allegations and untrue statements contained in the email had gravely injured his reputation and his business
In 2015 a notice of discontinuance was lodged
bringing those proceedings to an end with Mr Keating later saying it had been settled
In an interview with the Sunday World in August
Mr Keating revealed that he received information that there is a €15,000 hit on his head
He alleged the threat against him is linked to false claims circulating in Dublin branding him a garda informant
Keating said he had contacted gardaí on numerous occasions by phone and email after being told of the alleged threat but hasn’t received a response
Gardaí launch murder investigation after man dies in Finglas house attack
A man who died following an attack at a house in Finglas last night has been named locally as Anthony 'Josh' Fowler - a Finglas native aged in his early sixties
Gardaí have now launched a murder investigation
gardaí and emergency services responded to reports of an assault outside a residence on Dunsink Green
Mr Fowler was treated at the scene and subsequently pronounced deceased at Connolly Hospital
At this stage gardaí are not classifying Ireland’s latest murder as being gangland related
This is despite the victim being close to a number of major organised crime figures – some deceased – based in the Finglas area
Gardaí say that no arrests have been made so far but it is understood that suspects have been nominated and they are from the locality
It is understood the victim in the case suffered fatal stab wounds when a row broke out in a house
The scene has been preserved pending the arrival of the Garda Technical Bureau
"The Coroner has been notified and the Garda Technical Bureau and Office of the State Pathologist have been requested to assist in the investigation
A post-mortem examination will be scheduled,” gardaí said in a statement
"A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Finglas Garda Station
A Family Liaison Officer (FLO) will be assigned to support the family of the deceased
“Investigating Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward
They are particularly appealing to those with video footage and motorists who may have dashcam footage from the area at the time to contact them.”
There was a heavy garda presence at the scene this morning
and part of Dunsink Green was sealed off with garda tape
The corner house where the assault took place was the focus of a number of members of the garda technical bureau
who assessed the scene and gathered material in evidence for further forensic examination
A patch of ground in the front garden appeared to have been covered in plastic sheeting also
and this was being examined by the technical bureau team
One local woman said she hadn't been aware that there had been an incident until she woke up this morning and looked out the window
"I saw the garda tape and I knew there was something wrong," she said
consulting with the technical gardai as the investigation progressed

Gardaí have warned of significant disinformation following unsubstantiated claims an attempt was made to abduct a child in Finglas, Dublin, over the weekend.
In a statement on Monday, Garda Headquarters said it has received no report of an attempted child abduction or similar activity, “nor has An Garda Síochána any information to substantiate such claims”.
The warning comes as false information about several incidents, much of it spread by prominent anti-immigrant figures, continues to be shared on social media.
On Sunday, allegations began to spread online that foreign nationals had abducted and sexually assaulted a young child in Finglas. These allegations were shared by far-right groups, including the National Party.
Accounts also shared claims that locals had forcefully prevented two foreign nationals from targeting other children. There is no truth to claims these men were targeting children, gardaí said.
Gardaí confirmed that two foreign nationals were involved in a public order incident in the Finglas area. During the incident, a Moldovan man was assaulted on the street and forced to run into a supermarket. The force said the incident was relatively minor and not linked to allegations involving a young child. “It was a run-of-mill standard public order incident,” said a source.
Some people gathered at the Garda station demanding information on the men. They were encouraged by members of the National Party, who addressed locals outside the station while displaying anti-immigration banners. There have been online calls for more protests outside the station as well as “vigilante” action against immigrants. The Garda confirmed it is investigating the public order incident outside the supermarket.
Gardaí said they are aware “of suggestions of an inappropriate approach to children or attempted child abduction which led to this public order incident. No incident of attempted child abduction or similar activity has been reported to An Garda Síochána nor has An Garda Síochána any information to substantiate such claims.”
It said anyone with direct information on any such incident should contact Finglas Garda station.
“An Garda Síochána is very conscious of the volume of misinformation, disinformation and fake news circulating on this incident, and in general, particularly on social media and direct messaging platforms.”
It appealed to the public and media “to independently verify any information published on social media and/or messaging apps”.
The force also warned against vigilante action.

Darragh NolanTue 22 Oct 2024 at 18:28Cabinet approval has been secured for the Luas line to be extended to Finglas
Transport Minister Eamon Ryan has confirmed
Plans for the project will see the Luas network extended northwards by 4km from Broombridge to the Finglas area
St Margaret’s Road and Charlestown near the M50
With estimated journey times of around 13 minutes between Charlestown and Broombridge
and 30 minutes between Charlestown and Trinity College
the project will reduce journey times to and from the city centre by 15 minutes at peak times
when compared with travel by a private car
The extension is set to enter the planning system before Christmas and if the project is “accelerated” it could be operational by 2031
The Department of Transport has said the Finglas extension will serve a population of around 56,000 people by 2035
“The Government’s approval of the Luas Finglas project today forms part of our commitment to significantly invest in public transport and decarbonise Ireland’s transport system,” Mr Ryan said
the Luas tram system has been a public transport success story for Dublin’s citizens and visitors
“We can look forward to the Luas extending to Finglas along a green track line that will open up lands for more transport orientated housing development along the way
“The Luas Finglas project will bring reliable
high-frequency and sustainable transport to well-established and new communities
allowing people to access opportunities for employment
“I am delighted that the Government’s approval today starts that journey.”
the project is also set to provide improvements for walking and cycling networks in the area and a 350-vehicle park and ride facility near the St Margaret’s Road stop
The Finglas Luas will provide an additional 1.3m low-carbon public transport trips in 2035 with that figure rising to 1.8m by 2050
“It is very positive to see progress on Luas Finglas
2022-42,” National Transport Authority (NTA) CEO Anne Graham said
“I believe that an ambitious and exciting project like this has the potential to be transformative for this part of the city and that it will further enhance the area for people who live here
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) CEO Peter Walsh said: “The Government’s decision to allow TII to seek planning approval for the 4km extension of the Luas system is a very appropriate 20th Birthday present for the Luas system
"The 20 years of Luas in Dublin has enabled delivery of compact growth in parts of the city such as the IFSC
Luas provides zero-emission sustainable mobility and contributes to Climate Action by attracting people out of their cars
"All at TII look forward to delivering more Luas services for Dublin and other cities in Ireland.”
THE 11-year-old boy stabbed in the back by a fellow pupil at primary school is expected to remain in hospital for days as he recovers from surgery
The young lad was knifed with a large blade and suffered a punctured lung on Tuesday morning at St Finian’s School in Finglas, north Dublin
He underwent surgery and had been in intensive care but as a precautionary measure
He had suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries
A source told the Irish Sun: “The boy has had surgery and is out the other side of that
“His injuries are non-life threatening but it wasn’t as if it was a slit with a knife
The other child who carried out the attack is suspected to have brought the weapon onto school grounds.
Work is continuing to establish what exactly led to the incident.
However the main priority is that all pupils as well as staff are being supported.
the school itself and the gardai are working to ensure professional help is available for the children in the schools and particularly for those who witnessed it
The National Educational Psychological Service is also available for use for the school
The child who carried out the attack is under the age of 12
and therefore generally cannot be charged with a criminal offence
The gardai initially engaged with State agencies over the incident but have now stepped away
Reacting to the incident yesterday, Sinn Fein TD Dessie Ellis branded the stabbing a “new low” as he passed on his best wishes to the injured boy and his family
Ellis told the Irish Sun: “The fact that someone was attacked in a school in a safe place for kids
You’ve often had things happen outside of schools but never in the school precincts
The incident sparked mass panic in the area
with parents rushing to the school and also other schools in the area
One local explained how people were “fearing the worst” when the news broke
and added: “Parents were rushing to the schools to try and make sure their child was alright
“The school was very good in reassuring parents about their own child but also that the child who was stabbed was not suffering from any life threatening injuries.”
