The Gorey Three Day will not take place this year
with the event cancelled for 2025 due to a “collapse” in the number of riders entering.
The development is a major blow for Irish cycling
It means the number of stage races – certainly for this year – that will be promoted during the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend is now down to one; Dornan Rás Mumhan
For many years the Irish scene had three races taking place over the Easter weekend
Rás Mumhan and International Tour of the North
which was due to return in 2022 after the pandemic but has not been run in the past-Covid years
The Gorey Three Day had flagged in recent weeks the event was in danger
three weeks before the event was scheduled to take place
Stickybottle understands when the first recent appeal for entries went out
the decision has been made to cancel the event for this year
the number of riders entering the race was at 200
There were 155 entries in 2017 and 104 in 2018
The organisers of the race said it was “with regret” they had taken the decision to cancel the 2025 edition
“due to a significant drop in rider entries”
“Rider entries have completely collapsed,” said race director Derek Webb
try to get a handle on why the entries were so low.”
They added “to better understand the situation” they will be distributing a survey to riders to identify potential areas of improvement for the 2026 season
adding they were grateful to those riders who had entered
“I would like to thank the riders who did register,” said Webb
adding entry fee refunds will be processed in the coming weeks
some 62 riders had entered by the end of last week and this was “well short on what’s needed to make the event viable”.
Webb added one rider contacted the race asking if prize money was on offer
suggesting there was no point entering if there were no prizes
“You do scratch your head a times and ask why do you bother,” he said
adding he would try and get the race back on the road for next season
Though the cancelation of the race was very disappointing
Webb said the staff at Cycling Ireland had done their best to assist
who had made “exceptional efforts”

Local businesses and residents in Gorey were left frustrated this week after receiving just three days’ notice about a planned electricity outage that will shut down many shops and services over the weekend
Gorey Councillor Darragh McDonald is calling for a complete overhaul of how utility companies and local authorities communicate with the public when essential infrastructure work is being done
“We’re really letting businesses and individuals down,” said Cllr
“People deserve proper notice and real engagement
especially when the work being done has such a big impact on their lives.”
alerts only began going out on Tuesday—via text—and postal notices only arrived Wednesday
“That gives people just three days to cancel appointments
“Saturday is the busiest trading day of the week
And to do this right after the Easter school holidays just makes no sense.”
McDonald stressed how much these kinds of disruptions hurt small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
“Thousands of people are employed in local SMEs across the country,” he explained
“These businesses pay commercial rates and taxes
It’s just not right to put their income and operations at risk without proper planning and notice.”
He acknowledged that maintenance and upgrades are necessary but said the way it’s currently being handled is simply not fair
McDonald is calling for a more collaborative approach
along with Wexford County Council and other key agencies
should sit down and agree on a clear communication protocol
people need a week’s notice for any planned outage,” he said
“That gives businesses time to prepare—whether that’s staffing
He also suggested working with the local business community to find the least disruptive time for maintenance work
why not ask businesses what day is quietest for them
the impact is minimal and everyone’s happy.”
“What we’re doing now just isn’t good enough,” he concluded
“We need a system that works for everyone—workers
And that starts with better communication.”

Cork which also begins operation on midday Friday May 2nd
Prosecution of speeding offences will take place by Fixed Charged Notice which is a €160 fine accompanied by three penalty points
Head of Roads & Transportation at Wexford County Council
says there are plans for more to be installed in the future
It is quite a busy road and a good quality road
"There are more plans to roll out further cameras in Wexford in line with the Department of Transport and An Garda Síochána plans for the rest of the country aswell."
Location of new Static Speedy Safety Cameras
Average safety cameras use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to record the time
and location of each vehicle that passes through an entry and exit point
Drivers detected exceeding the speed limit i.e
travelling from point A to point B too quickly
are issued with a Fixed Charge Notice which
assigns three penalty points to the drivers licence and a fine of up to €160
The objective of the cameras is to prevent death and serious injury on Irish roads
Speed is a factor in the severity of outcome of many collisions
They are one of a range of Garda technology
and education initiatives to reduce road deaths as part of the Government’s Road Safety Strategy

Tobar Mhuire View is under construction with some units already finished
Housing projects in the Gorey district are progressing apace with new units expected to be completed within the “coming weeks”
At the April meeting of the Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District (GKMD) Councillor Joe Sullivan enquired about the progress of the remaining builds at the housing development at Tobar Muire in Creagh Demesne and received “wonderful news” in response
“They’re coming along very well and are just in the signing process at the moment,” said housing officer Paula Shorthall
“So we’re hoping we’ll have 16 houses from the next phase ready in the coming weeks.”
Pleased to hear the timeline was now weeks rather than months
Cllr Sullivan described this update as “wonderful”
There was further good news for those hopeful of acquiring social housing in the district as Ms Shorthall confirmed that a “substantial number” of houses from a 58-unit development would be earmarked for social and affordable housing when complete
Cllr Anthony Donohue enquired about the development which was recently the subject of a planning application by LSG Neulux Ltd to Wexford County Council
It proposes to construction 58 residential dwelling units comprising of 22 houses and 36 apartments at Ramstown Lower and Knockmullen
“The developer has been in to discuss those units with us about providing us with a substantial number of them
he’s looking at social and affordable houses there,” said Ms Shorthall
Gorey was among 136 Garda stations across the country where crime rates reached a six-year peak in 2024
Gorey Garda Station was also one of many stations where crime levels increased by at least 20 per cent compared to 2019
The figures compiled by the Central Statistics Office and An Garda Síochána reveal that a total of 1,044 offences occurred in Gorey in 2024
Thefts topped the board in Gorey with 393 carried out last year
A further 160 assaults/threats occurred as well as 153 public order offences
Criminal damage accounted for 94 of the offences
8 were robberies and 55 accounted for other offences
Among the 136 stations where crime rates reached a six-year peak last year were Newbridge
In Einniscorthy last ear the most recorded offence was that of theft which had 228 instances followed by assaults (164)
public order (142) and criminal damage (94)
TD Malcolm Byrne said they reflect the concerns he’s been hearing from people and businesses across north Wexford which he’s been raising on Garda presence
crime rates have decreased from 59 in 2019 to 50 offences last year
Assaults/threats came out ahead of the rest by only a mere margin at 10 as criminal damage and theft followed after with 7 occurrences each
there were six instance of public order offences
There was only one robbery recorded and four instances of other offences
There is a major Garda recruitment campaign currently ongoing and Deputy Byrne says it’s important to ensure that a sufficient number of Gardaí graduates are allocated to north Wexford to tackle these challenges
"Now that we’ve seen the highest crime rates in Gorey in 20 years
we really need a very serious focus on additional Garda resources
I was at a meeting just recently with a number of community alert groups in the area and they certainly share the concerns that I have around the shortage of Gardaí
"This is not a criticism of the Gardaí locally who do a very good job but being blunt
there simply isn't enough of them,” said Deputy Byrne
Deputy Byrne went on to highlight that ever since the downgrading of Gorey Garda Station in 2012
he doesn’t believe there has been an adequate policing focus in north Wexford in spite of it being one of the fastest growing areas of the country
Mattress Mick Gorey has announced its closure almost a year since it opened in Gorey Business Park
The owner of Mattress Mick in Gorey has announced it is winding down and will soon close
almost exactly a year on from when it first opened its doors in Wexford
After searching for a suitable premises in Wexford for years
Mattress Mick finally opened the doors of a superstore at Unit 24 in Gorey Business Park on April 3
the intervening year hasn’t gone exactly to plan and the store has not been trading as they expected
The first month of trading went well in the Gorey store but it began to fall off in the following months
franchisee Gareth McCarthy said: "It’s probably the case that Gorey is just not big enough for us
We were looking for Wexford town for a couple of years but we just couldn’t find a suitable property
We probably prematurely jumped on Gorey thinking they’d travel but it’s too far
they’re lovely people and fantastic to deal with
We’re very sorry to have to close it but the store is just too big for the town.”
Although the population has undoubtedly increased in Gorey over the last 20 years
Gareth explained that according to a study Mattress Mick has carried out
shoppers are not travelling to Gorey for “big bulky items” like mattresses
"It’s also my belief that commuters are shopping on the East Coast in Dundrum or the retail parks on the way down
They’re not shopping in Gorey for our type of product
maybe they are for dresses and stuff like that
white goods and multi-goods like furniture
they’re shopping on the East Coast,” said Gareth
The Gorey store extends to 5,5000 sq m and features over 50 brands of beds and mattresses as well as bedroom furniture and slide-robes
There is no set closing date as the store will be selling off their stock in a significant sale with up to 60 per cent off across many of their items
"We're a destination store so we advertise very heavily
Our social media is on spec and we’re very good with local communities
"We definitely had that initially and the first month was very strong
it looked like was gonna be a very good store but then it just fell off the cliff and it's all down to population,” said Gareth
This may be the end of Mattress Mick in Gorey
the company is actively looking for a premises in Wexford town and have put feelers out to landlords looking for a more suitable premises

Isabel ColleranGorey GuardianSun 4 May 2025 at 08:00Ballyoughter Drama Group made a donation of €500 to Courtown RNLI recently
after being selected by a local commercial fisherman who recognised the invaluable service they provide
Courtown RNLI was selected as the recipient for the generous donation by Ballyoughter Drama Group’s cast member Paul Goff
who most recently took to the stage as a doctor but has acted in various with the group over the years
Paul is a commercial fisherman by day and an actor by night
and his work at sea has provided him with certain insight into the Courtown RNLI’s invaluable service
he’s had to call on the RNLI services in the past and because he is operating out of Courtown Harbour and Arklow
He has an understanding of how valuable they can actually physically be to people and how quick they can be on site.”
The funds are raised from ticket sales across the four nights of Ballyoughter Drama Group’s play each year
Some organisations receive an annual contribution while other organisations are selected by members of the group
there’s teas and coffees and buns given out
I’d say the tickets each year are sold out regularly to the same people,” said Liz
The RNLI is a voluntary organisation which relies on donations from the public to continue to save lives
Courtown RNLI has provided search and rescue cover in the area for over 75 years and now operates an inshore D class lifeboat
"I actually think the people behind the yellow boots who go out to sea are not highlighted enough
someday if we’re out at sea and we’re at trouble
They’re extremely well-trained and they regularly practice down in Courtown but the big thing is that they are volunteers
"Volunteerism unfortunately is a dying ask today
we do need to celebrate that we have these motivated volunteers,” said Liz

Wexford gardaí and the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit remain at a housing estate in Gorey following the discovery of a suspected explosive device earlier this morning
A planned search operation targeting criminal activity was carried out
where the Defence Forces conducted a controlled explosion on the “viable suspect devices”
A suspect firearm and a large amount of ammunition were also seized and are to be sent for a technical examination
A garda spokesperson said a quantity of suspected cocaine was also seized
The woman was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939 at a garda Station in the southeast
"The scene is currently being held for technical examination
Investigations are ongoing,” the spokesperson added
Residents who were evacuated from Gleann an Ghardín on the Ballytegan Road
remain unable to return to their homes as gardaí and the bomb squad continue their investigations
The Defence Forces have declined to comment for security reasons due to the ongoing nature of the operation
Gleann an Ghairdín is a newly developed housing estate within walking distance of Gorey’s Main Street
Zsuzsanna Ronyai who is Chairperson of the Gleann an Ghairdin Residents Association was shocked when she first heard about the incident this morning
"News started circulating in different WhatsApp groups
and we didn’t know what was true and what’s not
But it’s shocking because it’s a great estate with a great community that we’re trying to establish here and then you see all this news and you don’t believe it
Today's News in 90 seconds - 27th March 2025
“I was on the way home from picking up my daughter when I saw they cordoned off the area
so a lot of residents who live there were standing out on the side of the street waiting,” said Zsuzsanna
Residents first moved into the housing estate which is being constructed in phases
Car Burnt Out in Ramsfort Woods Gorey Friday night
Simon BourkeWexford PeopleTue 15 Apr 2025 at 04:00One of Co Wexford’s most picturesque walking trails has become “blighted” by vandals with both a car and a motorcycle found burnt out there in recent weeks
has been the subject of repeated instances of anti-social behaviour this year and local councillor Craig Doyle is calling on gardaí to monitor the area as a matter of urgency
“This is happening on an almost weekly basis now with everything from illegal dumping to vandalism in the woods,” said the Sinn Féin councillor
“There has been a motor bike and a car burnt out there in the past week and with the current spell of dry weather the risk of a major forest fire is especially high
I have contacted gardai and Coillte and asked for increased garda presence and possibly CCTV cameras to be installed in an effort to tackle this situation before it worsens.”
Asking that anyone with information regarding vandalism in the woods to contact Gorey Garda Station (053 943 0690)
Cllr Doyle said the behaviour of a small minority shouldn’t be allowed to ruin a popular public amenity
“We're blessed to have such a lovely woodland walk so close to the heart of the town and it shouldn't be ruined for the community by a the actions of what is most likely a small number of people.”
He was supported by his fellow councillor Darragh McDonald who expressed his disappointment at recent events in Ramsfort and said he would be liaising directly with the local community to resolve the issues
“Going forward I am working with the volunteer group who manage the walking trail in the woods and Coillte to further restrict vehicle access at all entrances and unfortunately we'll also need to look at CCTV options,” he said
“I'd like to thank the gardai and volunteers who I met in the woods over the weekend who helped remove the vehicle and clean up as much as possible
it goes to show yet again how the local community works so hard to make Gorey a great place to live."
Deputy Malcolm Byrne described the vandalism as “totally unacceptable and hugely damaging to a much loved asset in the town” and said antisocial behaviour in Ramsfort Woods need to be “stamped out”

Major €3-4m refurbishment plans are underway for Esmonde Street in Gorey
A large number of businesses in Gorey were forced to close their doors during one of the busiest shopping days over the Easter holidays due to an ESB power outage

Some businesses were only notified by the ESB two days before the outage happened
A college student who raped a woman in a laneway while walking her home from the pub has been jailed for five years
raped and sexually assaulted the then 20-year-old woman while walking her home in the early hours of November 1
Molloy was found guilty by unanimous jury verdicts of one count of rape
one count of oral rape and one count of sexual assault of the woman following a Central Criminal Court trial in Waterford in February
The woman waived her anonymity to allow Molloy to be named
who appeared emotional in the dock during the sentence hearing
maintains his innocence and does not accept the verdicts of the jury
He told gardaí he kissed and digitally penetrated the woman and that it was consensual
He has no previous convictions and has been in custody since his conviction
Detective Garda Jacinta Gordon told the court that on the night in question
the young woman and her friends were driven to the pub by her father
They left the bar around 11.30pm and went for food before the woman decided to walk home
whom she knew from when they were in school together but had never spoken to before
Molloy walked the woman towards her home and they started kissing in a lane
The woman kissed him back before telling him she didn’t want to continue as she knew he had a girlfriend
Molloy then turned her around and forced her against a wall
The woman repeatedly said no but Molloy told her to “just let it happen”
When the woman resisted and fell to the ground
She managed to push him off and ran home crying
with Molloy shouting after her not to tell anyone
She phoned a friend and then told her parents what had happened
The woman was treated in a sexual assault treatment unit within a couple of hours
Molloy was arrested and denied the charges
defence counsel put it to the woman that she had initiated the sexual activity between them and it was all consensual
Sentencing him today Mr Justice Paul Burns said Molloy took advantage of the fact the young woman “may have shown some interest in him”
“That didn’t give him permission to engage in sexual activity without her consent,” he said
adding it was a “terrible experience” for the woman that has lasting psychological effects
“What led a young man of previous good character with good prospects to do what he did remains unexplained,” the judge said
noting there is no psychological report before the court
He noted the DPP had placed the offending in the category of seven to 10 years’ imprisonment and he set a headline sentence of seven years
taking mitigation into account and suspended the final year of that sentence on a number of conditions
including that Molloy remain under the supervision of the Probation Service for three years
In her victim impact statement which was read out by Det Gda Gordon
the woman said she has “gone from being a young woman who felt she had everything going for her
She said she feels violated and unsafe in her day-to-day life
She said she is constantly reminded of the worst night of her life when she sees his relatives and has to be careful she doesn’t run into him in the local shops
She said she now distrusts people and has struggled to continue to live her life as normal
but that she can proudly say she is now coming out on the other side
handed in a book of testimonials on behalf of Molloy
who he said had a number of achievements across the areas of education
he was studying architecture and design at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) with the aim of joining his father in the family business
but was unable to continue due to the case against him
Defence counsel said Molloy has a stable home environment to return to after his sentence has been served
He has been in a relationship with his current girlfriend for a year

People really enjoyed the sensory aspect and that's something kind of new that people hadn't really experienced before
so that's been a hit as well,” said Rachel
11 kids dove right into the unique playgroup
meanwhile their parents had the chance to interact and form connections
"One of the reasons I wanted to set it up was because I moved here in August and I wanted to make some friends
so I'm really happy with how it's gone so far
So many people are in the same position because Gorey is such a booming town
people are moving here who haven't necessarily lived here their whole lives
“So there are lots of people starting over and trying to make friends and as a mom
You need someone to talk to because we're all kind of going through the same thing and it's just nice to talk to people about it,” said Rachel
Tiny Hands Studio has partnered with Advocate for Autism where once a month the group will utilise the sensory area and other facilities
"We're looking at having 18 children and their parents come along for an hour long messy play
They said it's something that's really missed and it's a really nice opportunity to do something nice
Lots of people have come forward and said their children with Autism would benefit from something like this
so I wanted to have a charity partner to make sure I could offer it properly and I'm really happy to be doing that,” said Rachel
As Rachel tries to balance her busy life as a mother with the responsibility of planning a wedding
the studio’s opening times vary across the week
The studio is closed on Monday and Tuesdays
open on Wednesday for an afternoon session
open for both afternoon and morning sessions on Thursday and Friday and open in the morning on Saturday
Craig Doyle of Allenwood Drive Gorey was voted to be co-opted to fill the vacant Sinn Féin seat in the Gorey LEA
Local man Craig Doyle has been co-opted to the seat vacated by Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin at Sinn Féin’s convention last night at the Loch Garman Arms
Gorey said he is “over the moon” with the result of the convention on Thursday
December 12 as the opportunity to become a County Councillor for the Gorey local electoral area came “out of the blue”
"I’ve been a member of Sinn Féin since 2016 and I’ve always had an interest in politics but this has sort of come out of the blue
After the elections last week when Fionntán got in
a few people texted me and asked me if I’d go for it
"The thought had never crossed my mind at all and I thought about it again and again and said well I might as well put my name in and see what happens
this never would have crossed my mind at all like
it was a very fast process but when the time is right for something
you have to strike when the iron is hot,” said Mr Doyle
Mr Doyle has been a delivery driver for Stafford’s Bakery since he graduated from Gorey Community School 11 years ago
He believes his age as well as being well-known in the local community were two of the key reasons he stood out among the two other candidates; Kevin Molloy and Declan Kenny
who were put forward to be co-opted onto the seat
"It was the fact that I’m a local from the town and probably had something to do with my age as well
People said to me that I came across well in what I said last night
I wasn’t just targeting the young demographic
I was going for the older demographic as well
You have to try and look after people as best you can
you can’t just focus on one group of people,” he said
he’ll be officially co-opted to the seat at Wexford County Council’s monthly meeting and going forward
disability services as well as mental health services
“St Aidan’s in the town do commendable work but they’re severely underfunded
There’s lots of other things as well to be honest with you,” said Mr Doyle
He also plans to work closely with Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin on projects within the district
“I’ll be the main point of contact within the Gorey town area and obviously I’ll have to bring issues to him and work together,” said Mr Doyle
Mr Doyle thanked everyone at the convention for their support
“Thanks and commiserations to the other two candidates as well
that I was able to come out ahead of two excellent candidates
It just shows that the party is in such a great state in the area,” he said

Gorey Tidy Towns planted a grove of 21 trees on a green space
Gorey Tidy Towns planted these trees in the hopes they will add colour and biodiversity to the streetscape along the Paul Funge Boulevard
The sweet gum tree is native to Asia and the eastern Mediterranean
It is a broadly conical tree with young shoots
grey-brown bark and dark green leaves and it produces acorns
The Norway maple has dark red-purple foliage
which matures into dark purple and red tinged yellow flowers
The silver Himalayan birch has beautiful white bark with green leaves that turn to yellow in autumn and it produces yellow-brown catkins in spring
The mountain ash or rowan tree is a native Irish tree which produces white flowers in spring followed by bright red berries in autumn
The ancient Irish druids believed this tree to be a protector of the family home
Billy Halford of Gorey Tidy Towns thanked Wexford County Council for their ongoing support and for their donation of the six rowan trees
This project was sponsored by Kinbark Nurseries in Camolin
The six mountain ash trees came from Wexford County Council’s Trees for Wexford programme
in the exceptional care of all the team at Wicklow Hospice
