chairman John Hurley presents the runners-up prizes in the Turkey Doubles competition to Claire Woods (left) and Gertie Griffin Drogheda IndependentFri 27 Dec 2024 at 15:30GREENHILLS Bowls Club was a hive of activity and there was a great buzz about the place as the curtain came down on 2024 with the semi-final and final of the Turkey Doubles knockout competition In the first of the semi-finals John Hurley and Marie Maher lined up against Ciara Floyd and Eugene McKenna and this was a slow burner with both teams sizing up each other’s play and the lead changing hands on a few occasions early in the match in the fourth end Ciara and Eugene took the initiative with Eugene playing two direct hits to jack high and Ciara playing a forehand draw shot to the middle of the head John and Marie responded very quickly in the next end with two accurate forehand draw shots which opened up the head for Marie to play into and pick up three shots to go one up Ciara and Eugene showed great endeavour to get back into the contest once more They were playing very well and when Ciara played two delightful draw shots to the head to take their opponents’ bowls out of holding position they now led by two shots with six ends completed in fact the reverse was the case as they took a stranglehold on the game Thanks to some great bowls they took the next two ends on the bounce to take a two-shot lead it is really all about grinding out a win and it was Ciara who pulled the rabbit out of the hat and produced a moment of individual brilliance in the deciding end Two superb backhand draw shots cleared out their opponents’ bowls to take the game into a tied end Both teams were looking a bit on edge as they got the tied end under way it was Eugene and Ciara who settled down the quicker of the teams and they played two direct hits into the middle of the head to clinch victory by two shots at the end of a very tactical match Their opponents in the final were Claire Woods and Gertie Griffin and after three free-flowing ends of the decider the teams somehow remained on level terms It was in the fourth end that Claire and Gertie made their intentions clear with some delightful bowling into jack high The pressure was now weighing heavily on Ciara and Eugene but they were not playing badly and they upped the tempo of their game and kept plugging away The rewards weren’t long in coming as they gradually hauled their opponents back to edge into the lead after the fifth end Claire and Gertie stayed positive and reasserted themselves taking the next two ends on the trot with the help of two great backhand draw shots from Claire to go three up With two ends remaining Ciara and Eugene had to summon a response quickly and they did just that Eugene played two slick moves and Ciara fashioned a forehand draw shot into the middle of the head and as a result they stormed into a four-shot lead In the deciding end both teams went at it hammer and tongs Claire and Gertie had to throw caution to the wind but Eugene and Ciara defended the head very well and ultimately clinched victory by five shots to collect the Jackey Maher Perpetual Shield as well as their Christmas dinner After what was a very entertaining match to watch for the members chairperson John Hurley presented the runners-up prizes to Claire Woods and Gertie Griffin and the winners Ciara Floyd and Eugene McKenna received the Jackey Maher Perpetual Shield from Marie Maher John Hurley thanked all the members for taking part in the Turkey Doubles knockout tournament the umpires who His absence is abrupt and unexplained. So when Kit, an old friend who loved both Elena and Tom deeply, asks Elena and Orla to venture into the forest with him to see if they can find answers on an old yacht in the middle of a nearly-frozen lake, she agrees. By this stage of the story, the effects of global heating have become more palpable – Elena and Orla’s home has been crushed by a falling tree during a storm that has devastated the city and triggered civil unrest. Elena is driven by a desperate need for answers, and the knowledge that the home she is leaving behind has been irrevocably damaged.
