An investment of a further €30m in the Leixlip Water Treatment Plant in Co Kildare will help create a more robust water supply for over 600,000 residents across Kildare and parts of Dublin This investment marks the third phase of enhancements aimed at increasing the resilience of Ireland's second largest water treatment facility will add 63 million litres of water per day back into Uisce Éireann’s network ensuring a robust water supply for over 620,000 residents across Kildare and the Greater Dublin Area “This is a good news story for families and businesses in the Greater Dublin Area including parts of Kildare,” welcomed Ian O’Neill “The combined upgrades will improve the security of water supply for over 620,000 people “This upgrade will play a key role in supporting housing and industry It will also help futureproof our water supplies as we face challenges that are likely to be presented by factors such as population growth will include upgrades to the filters and clarifiers; the installation of a new flocculation tank; the replacement of the raw water pumps and significant enabling works Works will be contained within the plant and therefore there will be limited impact on the local community Strategic planning ensures that there will be no water outages expected during the project The works are well under way and are expected to be completed by 2027 The first phase of the project commenced in June 2018 and focused on modernising existing facilities These improvements significantly reduced the risk of boil water notices and enabled the removal of the Leixlip Water Supply Scheme from the EPA’s Remedial Action List The second phase consisted of a €20 million investment and involved upgrading coagulation This upgrade is currently nearing completion Demand for treated water across the Greater Dublin Area has reached record levels this year putting severe strain on water supplies serving communities in Dublin CamogieA short story from Dublin and Kilkenny – ‘We appreciate the tradition of the game but skorts are not fit for purpose’It’s the short story that has everyone talking https://www.kildarenow.com/section/1005/contact-us All the latest breaking local news from Kildare and county Keep up to date with the latest sports news Read all the latest Irish news and updates from around Ireland Find whats happening in and around Kildare and Leinster Enjoy our award winning photos and picture galleries taken in Kildare and Leinster Catch up on all the latest business news in Kildare and Leinster Read about the latest properties available in Kildare and Leinster Enjoy our latest and up to date motoring review and news in Kildare and Leinster Kildare and Leinster Met Eireann Weather Forecast Recent death notices and obituaries from Kildare and Leinster Latest environmental and climate change news in County Kildare Please allow ads as they help fund our trusted local news content Kindly add us to your ad blocker whitelist If you want further access to Ireland's best local journalism consider contributing and/or subscribing to our free daily Newsletter Support our mission and join our community now you can subscribe for as little as €0.50 per week which will also give you access to all of our premium content and archived articles Thank you for supporting Ireland's best local journalism Kildare gardaí probing criminal damage by fire incident on the Leixlip Road Members of An Garda Síochána (AGS) in County Kildare are investigating a criminal damage by fire incident which occurred on the Leixlip Road Garda Brian Carroll of Newbridge Garda Station discussed details of the crime when he appeared on KFM yesterday morning (April 30 last) He explained that the incident took place in the Donaghcumper area of Celbridge (which is located on the Leixlip Road) on April 24 last Gda Carroll added that a toilet roll bollard and a welfare unit were set alight by the perpetrator resulting in around €3,400 euro worth of damages He concluded by urging anyone with information to contact Celbridge Garda Station on 01 628 8222 When asked by the Leinster Leader about this specific crime a spokesperson for AGS responded: "Gardaí received a report of an incident of criminal damage by fire on the morning of Thursday They concluded: "Investigations are ongoing." While Shanley is not directly affected by today’s news he is wary of potential knock-on effects: “If it affects Intel’s budget, what’s to stop them digging into their contracts? If you look at their stocks they have been steadily declining – that’s the proof that they’ve had to make the cuts they are making.” Some are not so concerned at today’s news, however. “It’s all middle management, the excess, it’s the [United] States [that will be affected], Ireland is safe,” says an Intel worker, who preferred not to be a named, at a bus stop in front of the plant. Airidas Voronovas (35), a manager with Leixlip Car Service, also in the Ryebrook Industrial Estate, says he has seen similar fluctuations in Intel’s fortunes: “I’m here 15 years, it’s happening every few years, there were redundancies last year, they got to leave their jobs, some people were not happy in there as much as I know, I don’t have a problem with them.” Intel offered both voluntary redundancy and early retirement options to staff last August as the parent group looked to cull 15 per cent of its headcount globally. For another worker in the Ryebrook Industrial Estate, who did not wish to be identified, the new Fab 34 chipmaking facility at the plant may spare the Leixlip plant from any job cuts: “You’d hope that Leixlip would hold on to as many jobs as possible.” Facebook pageTwitter feed© 2025 The Irish Times DAC 1) 0ms,border-color 250ms cubic-bezier(0.4 1) 0ms;transition:background-color 250ms cubic-bezier(0.4 1) 0ms;color:#1976d2;padding:0px;min-width:0;}.css-1sgza6o:hover{-webkit-text-decoration:none;text-decoration:none;background-color:rgba(25 0.04);}@media (hover: none){.css-1sgza6o:hover{background-color:transparent;}}.css-1sgza6o.Mui-disabled{color:rgba(0 1) 0ms;color:#1976d2;padding:0px;min-width:0;}.css-w5p45x::-moz-focus-inner{border-style:none;}.css-w5p45x.Mui-disabled{pointer-events:none;cursor:default;}@media print{.css-w5p45x{-webkit-print-color-adjust:exact;color-adjust:exact;}}.css-w5p45x:hover{-webkit-text-decoration:none;text-decoration:none;background-color:rgba(25 0.04);}@media (hover: none){.css-w5p45x:hover{background-color:transparent;}}.css-w5p45x.Mui-disabled{color:rgba(0 0.26);}PrintShareSaveThe death has occurred of Wexford) April 11th 2025 (peacefully) surrounded by her family and in the loving care of the staff at Our Lady’s Hospice beloved wife of Gerry and much-loved mother of Laura and Niall Funeral Service.css-h76uj{display:inherit;margin-right:-4px;margin-left:8px;}Date Published: If you would like to make a donation to the chosen charity please click on the button below. memorial mass or anniversary for a Loved One?You can now create a family notice on RIP.ie to remember your loved one Support from readers like you keeps The Journal open You are visiting us because we have something you value Advertising revenue goes some way to support our mission so we can continue to produce accurate and meaningful journalism An account is an optional way to support the work we do. House-hunters slept in their cars for days to be eligible to buy a home in a new development in Co Kildare on sale at the weekend Dozens of buyers who queued up from last Tuesday were given first refusal on the houses at the Harpur Lane estate in Leixlip, Co Kildare in a development built by Cairn Homes There are 31 homes in question ranging from a two-bedroom mid-terrace house costing €460,000 (91.6 sq m) to €525,000 (118.5 sq m) for an end-of-terrace three-bedroom house The estate is in the grounds of the Castletown Estate with 119 homes and 73 apartments Those who had queued for days had their names and email addresses taken and were told they could go home as they had been placed on the top of the list for housing Only six homes were eligible under the help-to-buy scheme Anna from Estonia came on Friday evening at 6pm to secure a house 14 and a half hours before they were opened to public She was 48th on the list but ultimately managed to secure a house She has three misled on housebuilding during the election? Here’s the evidenceOpens in new window ] “Based on what I have heard today is that sleeping in your cars is a bit unnecessary. It’s about getting here as early as you can and finding an agent and then waiting. “We arrived at 7am and there were barriers erected. People weren’t being registered until 8.30am this morning. We are going to try and listen out for any notifications that are given to us about new housing and try and be on top of any development when we can.” Paul Molloy came with the purposes of buying a buy-to-let property. “There is going to be a housing shortage for the next 25 years. I have two young daughters, one 13 and one 9, and I’m concerned about buying an investment property so there is something there for them when they get older. “There’s an abject failure to sort out the housing crisis and a lack of a political will if you ask me. The problem is that local councillors adopt a Nimby approach and they don’t want development in their own backyard. The objection system is extraordinary. You get local councillors using political influence to stop developments taking place. The only way out of the housing crisis is to build more houses and apartments.” One Indian man, who was there with his wife, said the rents they pay in Leopardstown would be the equivalent of a mortgage on one of the homes in Harpur Lane. He and his wife are mortgaged approved and they are prepared to make the long commute from Leixlip to Leopardstown to own one of the houses. Ronan McGreevy is a news reporter with The Irish Times which employs 4,900 people at its Leixlip plant is to unveil plans this week to cut more than 20% of its workforce The company said the layoffs are part of a broader strategy to refocus on an engineering-driven culture The planned layoffs follow a reduction in workforce last August when Intel said it planned to cut 15,000 positions Intel has refused to comment on reports of plans to cut 20% of its workforce It's facility in Leixlip is its biggest outside the US Kildare County Council has reported a total of 237 complaints around noise nuisance and anti-social behaviour in the Celbridge/Leixlip municipal district between January 2024 and January 2025 the council’s complaints system does not specifically categorise anti-social behaviour complaints instead encompassing a range of issues including noise disturbances and more serious cases of anti-social behaviour the majority of these cases were minor in nature and have since been closed a small number of more serious cases remain under investigation with legal proceedings either ongoing or planned to ensure enforcement In response to Social Democrats Cllr Nuala Killeen a council spokesperson highlighted the complexity of handling anti-social behaviour cases which often require coordination with external agencies such as An Garda Síochána So what for Ireland? This is no push to encourage unpaid leave nor an attempt to bag 100 redundancies (à la December 2022). The scale of this move, at least in global terms, is a sobering reflection of just how viciously the corporate axe must be swung. But there is hope in Leixlip, at least in the vacuum of actual detail. The plant is considered central to the company’s fortunes and has a major focus on engineering and chip design. With cut backs more likely to be focused on other aspects of operations, perhaps Ireland may prove too valuable to fail (or gut). “If you’re looking for places that may be a bit bloated in terms of secondary support services, that’s not Leixlip,” said James Lawless, who is Minister for Higher Education, but more importantly here a TD for Kildare North. The latest job cuts, according to Bloomberg News, are part of a bid to streamline management and rebuild an engineering-driven culture. Lawless may be more chipper, but there is little comfort in speculation and real numbers do the talking. Globally Intel has already pared back from 124,800 staff in 2023 to 108,900 last year, a reduction of about 13 per cent. Such things should not come as a surprise, though, given the company’s appointment of Lip-Bu Tan as chief executive in March, his promise of change and the instant rallying effect among shareholders (specifically, a 15 per cent bounce on Wall Street). Things were hardly likely to stay the same nor see incremental change. “In many ways we are the founders of the ‘new Intel’,” Tan said in a note to employees shortly after his arrival. The Ryevale Lawns Residents Association (RLRA) argued that the "misinformation" presented to the High Court was evident as five of the nine residents named were not even present at the alleged protest on March 4 "It is abundantly clear from what residents have told the association that no intimidatory behaviour can be attributed to them," the RLRA said The group also noted that their position was supported by a video of the interaction They added that residents merely informed Uisce Éireann that Ryevale House a protected structure once owned by Central Bank architect Sam Stephenson An Bord Pleanála ruled that the transformation of the house into a reception centre violated planning laws a decision which Me Liberer is currently challenging in the High Court Me Liberer has been paid in excess of €4m by the state for the use of Ryevale House since March 2023 company director Ronan Holbrook said there is “significant public interest in the continued use of the house” for “vulnerable single women” Cllr Bernard Caldwell (FF) for Leixlip pictured at the Main Street of the town has been pitched into uncertainty as to whether job cuts in Intel could impact their town The American multinational corporation is expected to announce plans this week to cut more than 20pc of its staff MORE THAN A dozen people slept in their cars overnight at a Co Kildare housing estate First-time buyers – many with young families – are hoping to compete to buy one of 30 houses on offer this weekend Buyers began to queue in their cars from Tuesday in a bid to secure properties at the new Harpur Lane estate located in Leixlip near the Dublin county border and just off the M4 two days before the house viewing is set to take place 15 cars containing 19 potential buyers were parked outside the viewing location The roughly 25 properties on offer consist of two-bed three-bed and four-bed homes in Harpur Lane a housing estate which first opened in 2022 The two-bed terraces are priced from €460,000 while the three-bed terraced homes start from €495,000 Some of the homes are expected to start at €530,000 said that he had been trying to buy a home for some time You’d be willing to do this any time if it was a proper queue.” and the young couple were looking for a “community-oriented” area such as Leixlip to settle down there’s good schools and amenities and great city access,” Trish said Other people came up today and I had to tell them that there’s already 15 people ahead of them One potential buyer said that he had slept in his car overnight with his wife to secure their place in the queue “We’ve been to other housing developments before where we’ve queued up and the houses were all gone in five minutes Email notifications about the house viewing here were probably sent to around 1,000 people it’s a bad situation during working hours but it has to be done to even have a chance at buying.” Another man in the queue argued that the government “are not building enough houses” According to the Central Statistics Office a total of 30,330 homes were built in 2024 The government has been widely condemned for the decrease as former Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien and Taoiseach Simon Harris had promised voters that 40,000 homes would be completed last year Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald said the 40,000 figure was “pure fiction” and a “load of bull” stating that it was a “trick designed to mislead the public” “We have people here who have been waiting for a year even five years for their first home,” the man waiting in the queue at Harpur Lane said and that’s the only way to tackle the housing crisis” Estate agent representatives took a list of names from those in the queue promising that they would “work down the list” The 19 people in the queue were told to leave once their details had been taken as several residents had reportedly made complaints about driveways being blocked More potential buyers are expected to queue ahead of the bookings this evening and tomorrow Kildare County Council outlines 2024 plans on social and affordable housing in Leixlip Kildare County Council (KCC) was asked by a councillor at a recent meeting to outlines its plans on social and affordable housing in Leixlip for 2024 Fine Gael Cllr Paul Brooks motioned for KCC to outline the plans when he appeared by virtual means at the latest Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District (MD) meeting Cllr Brooks' motion was seconded by Cathaoirleach of the MD KCC explained via its report that on lands where there is a 20 per cent Part V requirement at least 10 per cent of the Part V provision must be used for social housing units and the remainder can be used for affordable housing KCC further said: "The Part V affordable purchase scheme at Herford Park Leixlip was launched on March 4 and is currently open for applications." Photo: Sean Brilly. Experience won out over youth as Leixlip qualified for a first Auld Shebeen Athy Intermediate Football Championship final since 2019 after a thrilling semi-final against reigning Junior Champions Milltown in Manguard Park on Sunday afternoon. That certainly didn’t seem the likely outcome at half-time with Milltown three points ahead having played into a stiff wind. And played superbly at that. Goals change games though and when top scorer Jack Barrett got the final touch after goalkeeper Omar Dunne was outjumped in the 38th minute, Leixlip were back within a point, and they never looked back. Milltown won early possession and wasted little time in finding the back of the Leixlip net. With the clock just having ticked over the minute mark, wing back Shane Daly’s ball in bounced awkwardly in front of goalkeeper Niall McConnell and when he failed to bring it under his spell, Paddy Donoghue was first to react, and he buried the chance. After five minutes Leixlip should have been level. Ronan Fitzsimons sent Ben Travers through, and he was pushed by Daly for a penalty. But from the resultant spot-kick, Tommy Moolick, with three successful penalties to his name in the competition to date, failed this time. He struck it well enough, but goalkeeper Omar Dunne made a fine save down low to his right. The first half developed into a fine, attacking game of football, with Milltown’s younger legs and an inspirational midfield performance from veteran Colin O’Shea, seeing them turn around still leading by 1-7 to 0-7 as they made light of Leixlip’s wind advantage in that half. Colin Sheerin’s brilliant free from the right wing stretched that lead to four at the start of the second half but Barrett’s goal followed and two more points from him and one from the impressive midfielder Fitzsimons made it 1-10 to 1-8 by the 50th minute. Milltown thought they had a second goal when McConnell caught a high ball in from Donoghue but spilled it into the net under pressure from Alan Dignam. Unfortunately for Milltown, referee Damien Whelan indicated the tackle on McConnell was in the small square and ruled it out. Still, Milltown were only a point behind heading into injury time, thanks to a brilliant point off the outside of the boot from O’Shea. A magnificent flying save from Dunne denied Travers a clinching goal before Milltown engineered two late, late opportunities to level matters. But Aaron Walker and corner back Jamie Cross were unable to find the range and Leixlip broke for Eamonn Murphy to fist an assurance point that puts them another step closer to a return to the Senior grade after an eight year absence.
