shared her first-hand experience of supporting Pieta’s clients on their therapy journey:
“People who are experiencing suicidal ideation or self-harming can avail of 12 sessions where the therapist will use the approach of solution focussed

“The focus is to educate parents in how to support their child/adolescent who are presenting with suicide ideation and self-harm and how this allows parents/carers to build on their confidence and to have open conversations with their child around suicide ideation/self-harm.”
Answering a question about access to Pieta’s services
Trudy advised language barriers should not stop someone in need from contacting them as Pieta will always source an interpreter

Far superior Longford cruised to a very easy win over Kilkenny
the undisputed weakest team in ladies football nationwide
in Round 2 of the Leinster Junior Championship at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday
There was never any danger of the visitors making it a competitive clash in the third tier competition and that is the way things developed with the rampant home county building up a commanding 2-9 to 0-0 lead at the break
Outclased Kilkenny registered a couple of consolation points late in the second half whereas Longford kept the scoreboard ticking over in adding another 0-9 to their emphatic tally in their quest for provincial glory
Brian Farrell’s side will make it through to the Leinster final with a win (or a draw) away against Carlow in the remaining group fixture on Sunday next in the build up to the separate All-Ireland Junior Championship.
Qualified for the provincial decider are the title holders Louth
who withstood a determined Carlow comeback in holding out for a narrow two-point victory (5-8 to 2-21) in Drogheda
The Longford mentors availed of the opportunity to make no less than six changes from the team that started against Louth in the opening round with Emily Reilly
Petrina Carrigy and Riane McGrath all featuring in the first 15.
Longford got off to a great start with a goal from Clodagh Logan with three minutes gone in the game and the same player found the Kilkenny net again in the 21st minute to leave the girls in blue and gold in complete control.
Kilkenny’s first score did not materialise until the 53rd minute from a free converted by Louisa Gilmore.

Lanesboro-based Steve and Marie Peters were delighted to be associated with the event which took place on the day of the coveted Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup
Martin stated there was as usual fantastic annual support from Longford people for the annual event and the view that they had of the racecourse and the racing itself was unique
"We had the best horses in Ireland and to watch the way they jump on the final fence at such speed and to be able to go out and do see that on what was like a fine summer's day was fantastic
the Gold Cup is the most valuable horse race in Ireland
"We are beside the final fence and it is just a unique view
you wouldn't get it anywhere else."It's unique for us and to be there on Gold Cup day is great."
There was great excitement as Galopin Des Champ triumphed in highly impressive fashion to bounce back from his Cheltenham Festival disappointment to win the Gold Cup last Wednesday
Martin described champion trainer Willie Mullins as the 'star attraction' for Longford people as he provided four winners on the trot
He stated outside the racing track and paddock there was an abundance of style on show with well-known TV stylist Marietta Doran judging the best dressed lady and gent competitions
which were sponsored by Paraic and Mairead Brady
The two best dressed winners received prizes of €500 each and Martin said it was a very successful day in terms of fundraising and the atmosphere for revellers
Oniesa Owens was the winner of the Bollinger Best Dressed competition
The Longford woman looked very glamourous and stylish and in a black-and-white outfit and a white hat that impressed the judges
Mr Skelly said everybody makes an effort to dress up for the day
"Most people are aware of it and there is a lot of high style and I won't say competitiveness about the fashion
"And whether they win or whether they lose the most important thing is that
Mr Skelly stated there was as usual fantastic annual support from Longford people with around 1,000 supporters there to enjoy the racing and attractions
their generosity and their is still amazing support
even though Longford GAA are having a difficult time at the moment
"They are still prepared to fight for their county and fight for their county teams
it's money that is badly needed for the promotion of football and hurling in our county."
Mr Skelly said RTÉ's Marty Morrissey and Longford GAA PRO Colm Murray did a great job and were a 'big hit' as MC's
while Racing TV tipster Johnny Ward was also very popular on the day

" Of all the schemes that have come out to provide housing through the private market for people on the social housing list there is no way other to say that HAP is categorically the worst that has ever existed
Deputy Clarke said one of the properties listed on Daft.ie
an average two bedroom apartment is priced at €1,250 per month
"If a person is on a low income or low enough that they would be eligible for social housing to be able to get properties when the rental prices are that high
"If you are going to spend 30% of your income and you take that and you add on the HAP allowance it does not come anywhere near €1,250
"If you are a single person and you are looking for a property to live in utilising HAP €1,250 is just way out of what would be passed by HAP
"So affordability is a key thing but it's a huge challenge and so is availability
"I am not randomly picking the most expensive one for rent in Longford
there are some that are priced at €1,600 per month
Deputy Clarke said action is urgently needed to deliver affordable housing but she believes making changes to the HAP scheme will have little impact
"Reforming HAP or trying to improve it is counterproductive when you do not have affordable properties
"The focus needs to be on affordable housing and they need to be genuinely affordable and whether that is delivered through a local authority or it's delivered through an approved housing body it's key," she added
Deputy Clarke said if a landlord is renting a two bedroom property for 1,250 per month and 20 to 30 people come to view it a low income earner with HAP is facing an uphill struggle
"The person in receipt of HAP in my experience is less likely to be offered the tenancy than somebody who is not in receipt of HAP and that goes back to the criteria associated with that scheme."
The Simon Communities of Ireland said the number of properties available under the HAP Scheme has fallen nationally since December 2024 with just 41 properties in 16 areas available within the discretionary HAP rate
The report found 31 of the 41 properties available to rent under HAP were located in Dublin
where the discretionary rate allows up to an additional 50% on the standard rate compared to 35% elsewhere
Longford County Council said the scheme continues to assist people and it plays a key role in supporting eligible households to access accommodation in the private rental sector

Longford County Council commented on their targets in 2024 and onward

“Longford County Council’s target for social housing units under the Housing Delivery Action Plan 2022-2026 are 75 units in 2024
“42 units were delivered in 2024,” they declared

Enterprise Minister Peter Burke has hailed the announcement as being one of the most significant to Longford and Westmeath's tourism sector in recent times
Longford and Westmeath’s tourism sector has been given a near €700,000 shot in the arm courtesy of an EU Just Transition Fund programme
More than €672,000 is set to go towards five tourism projects across both counties under Fáilte Ireland’s Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme
Among the projects that are set to benefit include monies for glamping and self-catering accommodation with the largest recipient being Athlone’s short cruise operator Viking Tours Ireland
The six figure sum is aimed at supporting sustainable tourism
job creation and economic development across the midlands
Tourism and Employment Peter Burke said the investment would go a long way towards underpinning the region’s burgeoning tourism industry
“This is a significant boost for tourism in Longford and Westmeath
The Just Transition Fund is about delivering real
tangible support for local businesses and communities as we move away from peat-based industries,” he said
“These investments will help us build a stronger
greener tourism offering that creates local jobs and attracts more visitors to our towns and villages
“We’ve already seen how impactful the Just Transition Fund can be for counties like Longford and Westmeath
“This new round of funding continues that momentum
supporting exciting local projects that showcase the best of what our region has to offer.”
Four of the five businesses set to receive funding are located in Longford and include:
• Ballymahon Cycles: €64,878 to expand and diversify its bicycle fleet
making its offering more inclusive for all visitors
• Croghan Hill Glamping: €80,776 for the delivery of eco-friendly glamping pods
• Killashee Eco Lodge: €210,000 for new self-catering accommodation
a thermal suite featuring Irish peat baths
• Firecracker Sauna (Aughnacliff): €19,331 for the development of a wood-fired lakeside sauna at Lough Leebeen
go towards Viking Tours Ireland (Athlone) to extend its river vessel and upgrade its environmental and accessibility features
The announcement is part of a wider €4.2m investment in 15 tourism projects across the midlands regions with further successful projects under the scheme expected to be announced over the coming weeks

Emmanuel James celebrating after scoring the stoppage time winner for Longford Town against Wexford FC at Bishopsgate on Saturday night Photo: Syl Healy
Just when it appeared as if struggling Longford Town had blown a glorious opportunity to collect all three badly needed points
up popped local lad Emmanuel James to score a dramatic last gasp winner in their battle to get off the bottom of the First Division table.
as he planted the ball into the corner of the Wexford net and the stoppage time goal was no more than the totally committed home side deserved on the strength of their encouraging second half display at Bishopsgate on Saturday night.
After going so close to breaking the deadlock with three chances in the same attack in the 53rd minute
Longford eventually broke the deadlock when a well worked move ended up with Daragh Murtagh scoring the opening goal
Dean O’Shea created the chance for Murtagh to hit the target in the 63rd minute but the Town pressed the self-destruct button to gift Wexford the equaliser after a costly mistake was punished by substitute Ryan Kelly for his goal in the 74th minute
That was the way it remained with time almost up before Emmanual James weaved his way through on a penetrating run before unleashing a powerful shot past the opposing keeper Paul Martin to earn Longford Town their third win of the season in a big boost for the manager Wayne Groves as his side prepare to face UCD at Belfield on Friday next.
Subs:- Francis Campbell for George (71 mins); Josh Giurgi for Wade Slater
Emmanuel James for Murtagh and Pharrell Manuel for Topcu (all in the 82nd minute)
Subs:- Darragh Dunne for Butler (half-time); Ryan Kelly for Flynn (53 mins); Mark Imiren for Abada (80 mins).

"So we have a location that is suitable for additional housing so it makes sense for the council to engage with the owners and possibly take over that site to deliver more housing accommodation in the community
Cllr Adejinmi said it has been unoccupied for far too long and many years
"We cannot let it remain in that state and even for health and safety reasons for the residents in the area as well
"There was a suggestion at the council meeting that if we can bring accommodation in there for older persons that would be great too because it's close to the services in the town and it is within walking distance of everywhere
"It would be great to have people living there and they could walk to the train station
they could walk to the shops so it really supports the 15-minute cities that are so popular these days

"It also would improve the value of the properties around the area as well
"So we are trying to deliver more housing in the area and reduce homelessness and support people who are struggling financially."
Cllr Seamus Butler seconded the motion and there was unanimous support from the other local representatives
Cllr Butler said he felt the Glack site would be an ideal location for supported and independent housing for older people
He said given the scarcity of housing options there is an urgency to find housing solutions and the need for developing housing at thr Glack site was “badly needed”
Cllr Adejinmi said she was pleased and encouraged the council executive had acknowledged the motion.would engage with the owners of the site before exploring a CPO

Longford will keep alive their hopes of reaching the provincial title decider with the usual one-sided clash against Kilkenny the probable outcome
The return of DCU star Clodagh Lohan was a big boost for the manager Brian Farrell and it will all come down to the final fixture in the group stage away to Carlow who cruised to a comprehensive 2-15 to 0-2 victory over Kilkenny last weekend.
The eventual top two teams will contest the Leinster final but the main target is clearly the All-Ireland Junior Championship with the games in the group stage against Antrim
If Longford can build on their fine performance in the first half against last year’s beaten All-Ireland finalists Louth
the chance of a Croke Park appearance might become a reality but that remains to be seen
Also in championship action last weekend were the Longford senior hurlers who were fortunate to get away with a draw against Leitrim at Pearse Park and are now facing a tougher task at home against Cavan in the next round on Saturday May 10
The local derby could be switched to Sunday

To spray or not to spray in Longford - think carefully and always consider the possibility of using pesticide alternatives
The number of pesticide exceedances in public drinking water supplies in Ireland has decreased significantly since 2017
there was a small increase in the exceedances detected last year by Uisce Éireann’s public water supply monitoring programme
with 66 exceedances detected in 2024 from over 34,000 analyses
compared to 52 exceedances in 2023. While the overall compliance rate remains very high in County Longford
it is important that there are sustained efforts and vigilance by all stakeholders to protect drinking water quality

The National Pesticides and Drinking Water Action Group (NPDWAG) reminds users of herbicides and other pesticide products to always take account of the vulnerability of their local drinking water supplies when making decisions about possible use of pesticides and to be aware of how their actions could impact their community's drinking water
Currently, there are several catchment areas prioritised for action, where Uisce Éireann has detected recurring pesticide exceedances from our monitoring programmes
Members of the NPDWAG and local catchment-based focus groups
established to coordinate targeted actions at a local level
are prioritising these areas for further work in 2025
Similar targeted action in recent years in areas such as Belturbet
Mayo has been a success in eliminating pesticide exceedances in those water supplies

Uisce Éireann's Drinking Water Compliance Senior Manager
emphasises the need for collective action: "Last year
we detected pesticide exceedances 66 times in 22 public drinking water supplies
In County Longford a total of 3 exceedances where detected in the Longford Central water supply. A concerning trend is the number of exceedances outside the spraying season for certain plant protection products
We want to remind users to be mindful of water sources when using pesticides
as one drop of pesticide can be detected in a stream up to 30 km away.”
Food and the Marine (DAFM) and Chair of NPDWAG
highlights the need for stakeholders to continue to work together and stresses that an integrated pest management approach must be followed
in which the potential to use alternative control methods is fully considered
“We all have a part to play in protecting drinking water quality
Users of pesticides must always consider the possibilities for alternative control methods in the first instance and if the application of pesticides is considered essential
make sure that they follow best practice measures to protect water quality
This approach is a win-win for water quality and biodiversity.”
Uisce Éireann and the NPDWAG are urging farmers
amenity users and domestic pesticide users to carefully evaluate the necessity of using pesticides
Pesticides should only be applied when essential and after considering alternative methods
we can protect water quality and help to deliver wider environmental benefits
Leaving some areas unsprayed can allow native flowering plant species to thrive
which in turn supports a variety of insects
including bees and other important pollinators

A defendant charged with trespass has been directed to make a donation of €750 to a Longford charity before the case against him is concluded
Longford was previously found guilty of trespass in such a manner it would cause fear in another person on May 31
Judge Bernadette Owens had heard details of the matter at an earlier court sitting
Last Tuesday a victim impact statement was handed in to the judge
The court heard there were no further issues since this incident
“The victim impact statement does not spare Vitor
He knows that even though he was delivering money for his daughter's birthday he was breaking the law
Mr Gearty explained that his client is originally a Portuguese national and came to live in Ireland in 1999
He was in a long term relationship with the victim
The solicitor told the court the defendant had been the victim of a “catastrophic and dreadful assault” and that the victim had been very supportive through a difficult time for Mr Viera
Mr Gearty said his client did not wish to make any difficulty for the injured party
and was asking the court for every leniency
The legal representative said the matter had only been contested so the judge could hear the entire evidence to give context to the offence
In concluding the case Judge Owens noted the defendant had no relevant previous convictions
and there were no particularly aggravating factors
The judge directed that the defendant pay €750 to Longford Women's Link by July 8 next
and if that money is paid she would conclude matters with a small fine
