will take place at Palmerstown House Estate 15 minutes from Newlands Cross / Red Cow Junction “The golf course is in absolutely perfect condition,” said Palmerstown House’s own Mick O’Shea one of the 135 who will vie for the coveted title “Hopefully the weather plays ball now as well and there is a little bit of run on the fairways because it’s a long golf course and it’s going to be playing to its full length as we’ll be off the blue tees all week.” After three years on the Wild Atlantic Dunes Course at Carne Golf Links the return to a parkland setting may be welcomed by some of the PGA Pros but measuring over 7,400 yards off the tips and with water abundant throughout “They’ll probably move the tees around on the 10th [the recently renovated par-3 that is now an island green] so that one won’t play as long and the tees might be moved up on the third but the 12th will play over 200 yards,” said O’Shea but it is the par-5 holes that are probably the jewel in the Palmerstown House Estate crown “They’re real risk and reward par-5s,” O’Shea adds “If you hit the ball down the fairway then you’ve got a chance of making a ‘three’ but then you could make a seven quite easily if you’re not perfect with your approach shot with 10 being surrounded by water now instead of sand as it was before it’s a good chance for a birdie if you hit the green but you can make triple just as easily “It’s a good test for the players this week Michael McGeady and loads of others and I’m sure they’ll be putting up good scores.” And anticipation is reaching fever-pitch levels at the host club as things get underway It’s been 19 years since we had it here and it was Padraig Harrington that won it back in 2005 It’s great to have it back and get the word back out there that Palmerstown is very much alive and kicking.” Harrington may be the last course winner of the Championship but defending champion David Higgins is vying with the previous two winners with each of the trio a three-time championship winner “It’s one of the biggest championships across Great Britain and Ireland,” O’Shea explains “and the prestige that goes along with it is huge They did a wonderful job hosting in Carne the last three years so hopefully we can carry on the great work that they’ve done.” the weather wasn’t particularly kind to Carne and O’Shea hopes that favourable conditions and the proximity to the nation’s capital will bring spectators out in their droves to watch the elite PGA Pros of Ireland do battle And it’s not just the spectators who are eager to be involved with record tournament entries recorded “I think this year there’s been over 160 entries,” O’Shea said “so there’s a massive waiting list to get in which is great to see the golf course is perfect and it all adds up to what will hopefully be a great week and a great championship.” Follow the live scoring by clicking here PGA HeadquartersCentenary HouseThe BelfrySutton ColdfieldWest MidlandsB76 9PT ®PGA is a PGA © 2025 The architect teamed up with Katie and Jason Rehill to help them transform their 1970s semi-detached home in Palmerstown into a house that was spacious enough for their two children It wasn’t all smooth sailing though and Dermot was up against it in the cluttered three-bed which had serious problems with damp and was in need of a complete renovation RELATED: Favourite Sunday night TV show Room To Improve makes a big impression on it’s return Katie and Jason explained to Dermot how they spend thousands each winter trying to keep their home warm and don’t even bother to use the upstairs bathroom as it’s too cold – and the shower doesn’t work ‘When we bought the house we knew there were underlying issues that we’d fix eventually,’ they explained before giving the example of the wires on the floor that they quite literally ‘swept under the carpet’ by covering with underlay Katie and Jason’s biggest worry is damp and especially in their son Harry’s room as he has asthma and she has to wipe the ‘dripping’ walls in the winter Dermot understands all their concerns and comes up with a plan to add a large extension down one side of the house which will be a living area He’ll create an extra bedroom and an office for Jason – hopefully there’ll even be a spot for Katie’s eggs to continue hanging on the wall Katie is so impressed at seeing their ‘dream’ on paper that she starts shaking… and that’s not even at the price Dermot’s idea comes in bang on budget at €325k but leaves no room for changes During their first look around the house Katie and Jason chat about wanting mirrors on the shed but Dermot quickly reminds them there are lots of decisions to be made in the house first He suggests using the unexpected depth of the underfloor to put in underfloor heating all the way through their home (which surveyor Claire Irwin recommends doing as it’ll be better in the long run) and they also have to decide what’ll happen with their insulation as the house has none in the walls A surprise that pops up during the build is asbestos in the front porch which costs €1440 to remove and learning about this as Claire tells her the prices of insulation options it’s not ideal for the stressed family who have already got a pressed budget and are trying to keep family life on the road Another discussion point during the renovations is the open-plan kitchen as Katie is worried about the smells while Jason questions the location of the sink Katie laughs at the idea of hiding it but Dermot gets his idea of liking a ‘flush’ wall and having a clean when one person in an open-plan space is relaxing Four weeks later the extension is really coming to life and Katie says the frame looks like a ‘hotel in my garden’ but there’s still discussion to be had over the design of the space Dermot suggests having a green kitchen so it blends into the garden but Katie isn’t for it and says it was the ‘one colour’ she was hoping not to have or perhaps not as Katie is talked around to it even if she’s not convinced Jason will be keen as he’s set on having a white who are renting somewhere to live during the build and paying two mortgages have to make during the build is whether to delay the upstairs work and focus on the downstairs renovations so they can get back into their home quicker Katie and Jason decided to focus on the ground-level family spaces and end up getting back into their home over a month ahead of plan The result of the extension is a home that is no longer cluttered and disjointed with a cosy sitting room at the front and tonnes of storage space it’s a modern kitchen and dining space glazed on two sides and flooded with light… Katie’s eggs are even still on the wall and she’s grown to ‘absolutely adore’ the green colour even if she leaves Dermot hanging when he asks about it After showing Dermot around their new downstairs Katie reveals that one of her favourite parts is the cosy sitting room which gives her somewhere to relax for a few hours on a Friday night ‘Irish mammies deserve a little bit of solace as well,’ she declares and cheers to that Katie concludes: ‘Dermot was a house psychiatrist [during the project] in the way he transformed our whole state of mental health.’ Share your thoughts on this story or any other over on our discussion boards Preparing for Pregnancy Fertility Treatment Surrogacy Male The 114th Irish PGA Championship kicks off with a Pro-Am on Tuesday with the tournament running Wednesday through Friday With the 114th Irish PGA Championship just four days away anticipation is building for the showpiece event in the region as it returns to Palmerstown House Estate for the first time since 2005 Padraig Harrington was the winner in ’05 capturing the third of his titles before going on to win three more in succession as the event was hosted by the European Club from 2007 through 2009 Damien McGrane and defending champion David Higgins are each looking to rubberstamp their credentials as the dominant force in the post-Harrington era but PGA Ireland Manager Conor Dillon feels that the standard of play has been so high in 2024 that any one of a wide number of entrants could get their name on the trophy this year the standard is very high,” Dillon said “and just to give an example of that shot a course record last year and he shot the same score again this year at Elm Park but he had to to win because Simon Thornton finished with a 63 and he just came up one shot short anyone can win but you have to be well under par to be in contention.” Having gone head-to-head with regularity over the season the final preparations for the leading contenders have varied widely Order of Merit leader Tim Rice signed off with another victory – his fifth of the season – at the Bellewstown Pro-Am meaning he arrives at Palmerstown looking for three-in-a-row after victory at Delgany the week prior Thornton was competing in the Irish Challenge at the K Club Higgins is competing at the Staysure Seniors PGA Championship on the Legends Tour in Scotland headed to the Belfry and then onto Copt Heath for a PGA Open Series event have been making reconnaissance trips to County Kildare to ensure that they are familiar with the course that has seen recent redevelopment and the par-3 10th hole turned from a heavily-bunker-surrounded to an island green “I think the weather the weather has been quite favourable for good growth and the golf course is in perfect shape,” said Dillon “so it’s shaping up to be a great event “And I know a lot of PGA members have been going down to play practise rounds at Palmerstown over the last 10 days They’re quite active and posting some videos that they took from the venue on social media so it seems to be quite busy already.” The tournament kicks off with a Pro-Am on Tuesday before the Championship itself is decided over 54 holes from Wednesday through Friday and there are still limited spaces available for amateurs to enter a team and test their mettle alongside the pros “There are 43 to 45 teams in it at the moment,” said Dillon “and it’s a great way to launch the Championship itself It would be great to see the tee sheet full It’s going to be a great Championship “The roll of honour is incredible with the likes of Padraig Harrington It’s such a historic championship that it’s a piece of silverware that everybody is really keen to get their hands on.” There are still limited spaces for the Pro-Am morning session which will begin with a shotgun start and cost is €550 per team of three, and if you wish to join, contact Palmerstown House directly at 045 901 906, or via email by clicking here. When the owners of number 71 decided to add a three-storey extension to the rear of the house, they co-ordinated with their next-door neighbours at number 72, who were also planning to build an extension. The two couples hired one builder to do both extensions, which neatly mirror each other and blend in nicely with the main houses. There’s a bedroom with en suite shower room on the first-floor return, plus three bedrooms on the first floor including the main bedroom, a big double room with two sash windows looking out to the front, a walk-in wardrobe with floor-to-ceiling storage and a gorgeous en suite bathroom with marble-tiled floor, large shower with marble-tiled surround and large bath with marble surround. There’s also a shower room on the second-floor return. The back garden is tastefully landscaped, with original granite walls, wide beds with acers, box hedging, Allium and Hydrangeas, climbing roses and Hostas. At the end of the garden the owners have built a home office and shed with high-vaulted roof to maintain privacy. From the shed there’s access to a lane leading to Ormond Road and Killeen Road. Just four doors down, number 75 measures 251sq m (2,700sq ft) and is for sale through Mullery O’Gara, asking €2.75 million. It has a three-storey rear extension, but the owners of this house decided to go for a more contemporary design, which works particularly well when you see the luxurious main bathroom on the first-floor return, with its Antica natural stone floor and four-claw standalone bath hand-painted by artist Don Knox. The Antica natural stone also runs through all the floors at garden level, making everything flow nicely together and connect seamlessly with the outside. The main reception hallway has ornate ceiling cornices and centre rose, and an archway leading to an inner hall. The large interconnecting drawingroom and diningroom both have original matching fireplaces and original timber floors, sash windows and shutters, with walls and wall plates hand-painted by Knox. Bedroom one is on the first-floor return, part of the new extension, and it has floor-to-ceiling windows, bespoke wardrobes and a fully tiled en suite shower room. There are three more bedrooms on the first floor, and the largest, to the rear, has wall-to-wall bespoke fitted wardrobes and panelled walls, plus ceiling cornice, centre rose and dado rail. Bedroom three, to the front, has bespoke fitted wardrobes and a hand-painted Knox mural. There’s also a lovely, iridescent mosaic-tiled bathroom on the second-floor return. The private back garden is low-maintenance, with mature shrubs, plants and trees, artificial grass lawn and a patio laid in Antica natural stone, with garden lighting and a sound system for al fresco entertaining. There’s also a concrete outhouse, and access to the back lane. Kevin Courtney is an Irish Times journalist Facebook pageTwitter feed© 2025 The Irish Times DAC
