There has been a strong criticism of a proposal to transform an industrial unit in a Trim industrial estate into accommodation for International Protection applicants
A form by the name of Erin Park Ltd has applied to Meath County Council to transform the unit in the Oak Tree Business Park into a facility for international protection applicants similar to proposals quashed in other parts of the county
Erin Park Ltd stated: "The development consists of non material amendments to the façade
The change of use for the structure in the context of this request for a declaration under Section 5 is for from commercial to its temporary use to accommodate persons seeking 'international protection' by or on behalf of the Minster for Children
as defined by Section 2(1) of the International Protection Act 2015 (no.66 of 2015)"
I am raising urgent concerns about a proposed International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) centre in the town
The facility is to be located in a building within an industrial estate—an unsuitable location by any reasonable standard
This development has come without consultation
or regard for the serious infrastructural and community challenges it poses”
“Trim has suffered from critical water outages consistently over the past three years
Our current infrastructure is barely able to support the existing population
We have major problems with the lack of doctors in the town and the lack of Gardaí
This town is at breaking point on a range of different key services”
“The proposed building itself is highly inappropriate
It is not suitable for families or children to live in
The building contains no kitchen facilities and just one toilet
which is grossly inadequate for the number of residents expected
This is not a humanitarian solution—it’s a shortcut at the expense of vulnerable people and local community welfare”
“Even more troubling is the complete absence of consultation with elected representatives or the local population
I only became aware of this plan on 2nd May
with a decision set to be finalised by 30th May
This leaves little time for public input and reinforces the perception that proper planning laws are being selectively applied
While ordinary citizens and businesses must adhere to rigorous planning requirements
this project seems to bypass them entirely”
Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín demanded the Minister for Justice to come to the next meeting of the Trim Municipal Council and engage with the people of Trim
We also urge the Department of Integration
and all relevant authorities to immediately pause this proposal until a full public consultation and independent site suitability review can be completed”

Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín is calling for the Minister for Justice to come to the next Trim Municipal District meeting to engage with the local community on plans for an IPAS centre in the town
A decision is due by the end of the month on an application by Erin Park Ltd to transform an industrial unit in the Oak Tree Business Park into a facility for international protection applicants
The Aontú leader says there is absolutely no engagement and is urging the Department of Integration
and all relevant authorities to immediately pause the proposal until full public consultation is carried out and an independent review of the site's suitability can be completed
Councillor Dave Boyne says Trim has suffered from critical water outages consistently over the past three years and argues the current infrastructure is barely able to support the existing population and claims there's a shortage of GPs and garda numbers

Trim Castle is one of Ireland's leading tourism destinations
a reputation government chiefs are intent on strengthening further with the opening of a new Visitor Experience Centre
state of the art visitor centre at one of county Meath’s most popular tourism attractions is a “key priority” for government bosses with construction work expected to get underway early next year
Ambitious plans aimed at adding a cutting edge and modern facility to Trim Castle has been a long-held aspiration for local authority chiefs and politicians
Planning permission for the project has been in place since the early part of last year
designs that are set to see the Market House building undergoing extensive conservation
Those plans are also expected to bring with it the introduction of a 200sq m extension along with a roof terrace
covered walkway and outdoor performance area
Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran said the extensive upgrade plans remained a central point of concern for his department following the appointment of a design team late last year
“The Office of Public Works (OPW) is committed to enhancing the visitor experience at our national heritage sites
and Trim Castle is a key priority,” he said
“As one of Ireland’s most significant medieval landmarks
it attracts thousands of visitors each year
contributing to the cultural and economic life of the region
“The OPW is progressing plans for a new Visitor Experience Centre at Trim Castle to improve access
“The centre will provide state-of-the-art visitor facilities
"It will also serve as a hub for cultural and community events
reinforcing Trim Castle’s role as a major heritage and tourism destination.”
A perennial high achiever in attracting visitors to its 12th century Anglo-Norman surrounds
Trim Castle saw over 113,000 guests descend on the banks of the River Boyne last year
Mr Moran’s pledge over the progression of the projected multi-million euro plans came on foot of a parliamentary question tabled by Fianna Fáil Meath West TD Aisling Dempsey
The Longford-Westmeath TD said it was his desire to see tenders for the project being issued before the end of December ahead of construction work getting underway in the new year
“This project represents a significant investment in Ireland’s national heritage and tourism infrastructure,” he said
“It will enhance the visitor experience while delivering economic and cultural benefits to Trim and the wider region
"The new centre will strengthen Trim Castle’s appeal to both domestic and international visitors and provide a focal point for learning and engagement with Ireland’s medieval history.”

A LONG-RUNNING saga for residents of Maudlin Vale in Trim who were left for many years living in an unfinished estate is to finally to come to an end with news that the estate will be taken in charge
For years residents had highlighted how they were the "forgotten estate" as the houses of their dreams turned into a nightmare when the economic crash left them in one of the last unfinished estates of the Celtic Tiger
residents had spoken out about issues in the unfinished estate with the Meath Chronicle highlighting their plight on several occasions
The original development was built by Baltra Developments who built the first phase of houses but did not complete the development before the economic crash
In recent years the remainder of the homes were built by another developer- Mulleady Homes- and now there is good news for residents as the council finally moves to take the estate in charge
Trim area councillors approved the taking in charge of Maudlin Vale estate after they heard that the council was satisfied that all outstanding works in had been carried out and that following an inspection
it was recommending that the estate be taken in charge
It went out to public display and no submissions were received
It will now go before full council to be rubber stamped
Councillors were told that first phase of homes were completed many years ago and part of the conditions of the construction of the remainder of the development was to bring phase one up to a standard that it could be taken in charge
They heard that the remedial works had been carried out to the first phase as identified by the council and that the new part of the development also up to an acceptable standard and that the road into the estate had been surfaced
It was confirmed that both the older part and new part of the estate were being taken in charge
Cllr Noel French thanked the council for their work and said it was one of their only unfinished estates in the area and he had great sympathy for the people who lived there and the news was really welcome
Cllr Joe Fox also welcomed it and said it was residents who were victims of the economic crash and it was just left there so it was great to see it fully taken in charge
Cllr Paul O'Rourke queried what is the issue with the parcel of land that is not being taken in charge in the middle of the estate and was told that it is not in the ownership of the developer so they could not apply for it to be taken in charge

Trim put down a marker of their intent in this year’s senior football competition with a comprehensive win against undefeated table toppers Navan O’Mahony’s in a one sided game in sunny Paddy O’Brien Park on Saturday 26th April
The final scoreline of 3-19 to 0-06 is reflective of the utter superiority of Trim throughout the game and in every area of the field
O’Mahony’s flattered to deceive as they chalked up their first score almost from the throw in and within the first minute
It was the only time that they held the lead and it lasted less than a minute as Daire Lynch swiftly replied with a long range point and Tom Carmody (2) and Conor Quigley stretched Trim’s lead before O’Mahony’s got their second point in the twelfth minute
David Lernihan responded swiftly with a goal and a point in the 15th and 16th minute
The goal followed a magnificent fifty meter crossfield pass from Tom Carmody
Shortly afterwards O’Mahony’s kicked a magnificent two pointer with the aid of the strong breeze but that was their last score in the first half
Trim totally dominated the remainder of the half and added a further two points before the interval to leave the half time score
Trim had the advantage of the significant breeze in the second half and showed they were not going to take anything for granted by opening their scoring with a Tadhg Carty point in the first minute
This was quickly followed by a great two pointer from the impressive Sean Fitzgerald
Trim added a further 2-10 to Navan O’Mahony’s 0-4 in the remainder of the half in an utterly dominant display which saw them run out 3-19 to 0-06 winners
The two goals were notable for the fact that they were scored by two substitutes who were only minutes on the field when they made their mark
Ian Birmingham came on as a blood substitute for the injured David Lernihan and immediately found himself at the end of a great Trim move and shot low and hard to the O’Mahony’s net
The second of the goals was a spectacular from Caoimhín O’Reilly
as good a goal as anyone present will see anywhere this year
caught the ball and pivot to his left and sent the ball screaming to the back of the net
Trim are certainly shaping up well at the moment
This was a commanding performance against the unbeaten table toppers
Their defence was solid to a man and gave their opponents little room to settle on the ball or score
Padraig Walsh and Gerry Dwane were most prominent
Conor and Patrick Quigley worked non-stop throughout the match and gave Trim a dominance on which this victory was built
All the forwards moved well and worked hard for each other and for the magnificent 3-19 tally
Even as Trim emptied their bench the subs impressed in defence and attack
At the half way point of the League this win sees Trim top the table with nine points from a possible 10
are also on nine points but with an inferior score difference so all to play for still
Next match May 10th at 4 pm in Trim v Meath Hill

Trim Educate Together National School marked a significant milestone in Knightsbrook Hotel last Thursday as the school celebrated its 10th anniversary with a variety show
dancing and acting with all the students from junior infants to sixth class participating
The students sang songs from movies like 'Moana' and 'Mamma Mia' to monologues from the movies 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' and 'The Lion King'
The show ended on a high with every student in the school singing the song 'We are the World' to the 400 guests who were present on the night
The students and staff put a huge amount of work in to preparing for the show and this was seen and enjoyed by all the parents
One parent commented that there was a great sense of joy in seeing the students performing together and all the work that staff put in to prepare for the show was greatly appreciated
Principal David Earley said: “Ten years ago
Trim Educate Together was founded with a vision to create a supportive environment where every child could grow
and explore their full range of abilities and opportunities
From those early days in the Glebe with Karen and Marie
to now having over 190 students in the Maudlins
"We had a great celebration in Knightsbrook Hotel with a night of music
Well done to all the students and staff for putting on such a great variety show
We are looking forward to the next ten years—and all the possibilities ahead for Trim ETNS”
Chairperson of the Board of Management said he was delighted and honoured to be chairperson of the Board of Management of Trim Educate Together school
Cllr Fox has been on the board of management since the school started in 2014 and has been part of the school’s journey as it has grown from 17 students to over 190 today
He said he looking forward to the coming years when Trim Educate Together NS will hopefully have its permanent home and congratulated the students and staff for their wonderful variety show
Trim Educate Together opened ten years ago in the clubhouse of the former Glebe Golf Course on the Kildalkey Road just outside Trim with just 17 students
The first principal was Karen Reilly who oversaw the transition to its current location in the former TIDE building at Maudlins in 2019
The building is a temporary home for the school until the Department of Education progresses plans for a permanent site
Plans for a two-way cycleway linking Navan and Trim that was expected to go to construction this year have been shelved due to lack of funding
The cycle and walking track was to be built along one side of the R161 Navan to Trim Road utilising the existing road verges under the Department of Transport's 'Pathfinder' programme
walking and cycling projects that could be quickly delivered and the Trim to Navan cycle link was one of two local projects approved for the scheme in October 2022 and set to be delivered within three years
It involved 9kms of two-way segregated cycle track and 2kms of shared active travel facility from the Balreask Cross Roads
south of Navan to the Newtown junction in Trim
Plans had gone through public consultation and the project was "shovel ready" but it was confirmed at the full meeting of Meath County Council that the scheme
would not go ahead with Director of Services Martin Murray telling members that "the funding never materialised and it was as simple as that"
He told how the council's allocation for 2025 is just €12m and that other Active Travel projects that had been in the pipeline such as the scheme for south of Ashbourne were also ready to go but there was no funding
A €24m scheme for Ratoath was shelved last year and Mr Murray said this was now nearer €30m but the reality is that they only have an allocation of €12m
He outlined they would keep progressing with pipeline projects to have them ready to go in the hope that the funding mechanisms would change
Chief Executive Kieran Kehoe said they would continue to fight for the scheme
saying it was an excellent scheme and the €5m cost wasn't huge in the grand scheme of things
Trim and Navan councillors expressed their disappointment that the cycleway was not going ahead pointing out that as well as being designed to take cars off the road
it would also be an important link for tourism
Cllr Noel French brought up the issue at Monday's meeting saying there seemed to be a commitment that the money was coming but then all of a sudden it disappears
adding that it would have made a huge contribution in terms of addressing climate change and developing tourism
we are wasting our time trying to get people out of their cars."
Cllr Ronan Moore said it was "both disappointing and worrying"that there were a number of active travel projects that might fall foul of the same issue and pointed out that council staff had put a lot of work into the scheme
that it had gone through public consultaiton and was now " essentially suspended and left on the shelf"
"It was a project that seemed to be strong and positive and I am asking government parties to reconsider where funding is spent in terms of active transport and ensure that these projects that are shovel ready and have the time and effort and energy put in to them
Cllr Padraig Fitzsimons questioned what it meant for the Balreask/Borallion junction
saying the pathfinder project was to be the "answer for that junction" and the meeting heard this was not affected

Aontú Councillor Dave Boyne has slammed the state of Meath’s transport infrastructure
highlighting the absurdity that it’s quicker to fly from London’s Heathrow Airport to Dublin than it is to drive from Trim to the capital
Highlighting the daily struggle faced by commuters
Boyne says the time has come for serious investment in a modern rail link that connects Navan to Dublin for passenger rail services
who is employed as an engineer on the Hornsea 3 offshore windfarm
regularly travels between the UK and Ireland
“A flight from Heathrow to Dublin takes less than an hour
a commuter from Trim can easily spend 90 minutes or more sitting in traffic trying to get into the city,” said Boyne
“It’s not just frustrating — it’s insulting
We are 50 kilometres away and yet it can feel like another country when it comes to travel times.”
Boyne is calling for the long-promised Navan to Dublin railway line to be delivered
“We had railway transport to all major towns 100 years ago
in far poorer times—how can we not deliver it now
it’s basic infrastructure that any functioning country should provide.”
“Even if they put on a passenger service from Navan to Drogheda
“It’s not good enough to leave one of Ireland’s fastest-growing counties without a proper commuter rail line
Boyne warned that the current situation is affecting not just commuters but the local economy as well
and young people are being driven away from towns like Trim and Navan
Dublin keeps expanding without any real plan to connect to surrounding areas efficiently.”
Constructing a dedicated Navan to Dublin rail line is just common sense,” concluded Boyne
“If it’s quicker to fly from a different country than to drive from a neighbouring county

Hannah and Majella’s project presented uses both in a farming and non-farming scenario
old baling twine could be used as a mat for livestock while a non-agricultural use was as home insulation to provide heat retention and reduce dampness
The are washable and a low-cost reusable option and underwent a number of tests in the lab by the students and their teacher Ms Belynda Weldon
The rollout of the programme for the second year running saw over 9,811 Transition Year students take part across 214 schools
which is up on the 8,100 students that participated in the programme last year
Six top group finalists were chosen to attend the event at the Bord Bia Global Hub and showcase their idea to a number of leading agri-food stakeholders
giving them the opportunity to meet like-minded peers and to demonstrate their learning over the course of the programme
Second place went to St Patricks Classical School
Navan for their project on Sustainable Equine Bedding
This project was submitted by Charlie Twomey
Agri Aware Director Marcus O’Halloran said of the event: “The Environmental Innovators Peer Day is always a major highlight in the Agri Aware programmes calendar
with six fantastic projects going head-to-head to be crowned the National Winner of the project
The variety and ingenuity amongst the projects was first class and made the job of picking a winner extremely difficult for our judges
“Scoil Mhuire were worthy winners and a big congratulations to them and their teacher on their success
many thanks to our partners BiOrbic and the supporting agrifood stakeholders who attended to mark the occasion and pick our National Winner for 2025.”

Congratulations to the winners and participants from schools all around the country”
Proposals for the Beechmount to Balreask Manor cycle scheme in Navan have gone on public display
The proposals for walking and cycling infrastructure along the R161 Trim Road will see the continuation of the cycle route on the Trim Road from the Solstice Centre to Beechmount
The proposed scheme includes for the construction of a two-way cycle facility and upgraded footway on the western side of the road between Beechmount Avenue and Balreask Manor and the provision of a one-way southbound cycle facility plus pedestrian footway on the eastern side between Balreask Village/Swanbrook and Canterbrook junctions
raised tables and speed cushions along the scheme
The work will be carried out mostly within existing road boundaries
with some minor setting back of public and private boundaries
Ed Moynihan welcomed the proposals and said it would be good to see the various cycle schemes connected
"They are progressing a number of schemes around the town and they need to be delivered to get the network in place
We welcome the new proposals - there has been a big uptake in cycling since the new scheme from the Solstice to Beechmount opened
which enabled children to cycle to five schools safely and the new scheme will encourage more people to cycle," he said
Bill Slattery of Balreask Manor said there were no great problems with the current plans but it will be a much bigger job if they extended it to the Balreask Arms
Cllr Eddie Fennessy said: “The Beechmount to Balreask Manor Cycle Scheme will connect residential areas on the Trim Road with the centre of Navan through the provision of a safe pedestrian and cycle route
Work to deliver the scheme is well underway
“A non-statutory public consultation was held in November 2023
A preliminary design on the emerging preferred route is now complete
Meath County Council have finalised all of the required reports and a Part 8 planning application was opened this week
“Over the past year I engaged with a number of local resident groups who raised concerns about how the scheme would impact trees and embankments along the Trim Road
“Those concerns were passed on to MCC and I am delighted that the proposed route will not require the removal of trees at Balreask Village or the embankment at Balreask Manor
I thank the council and the residents for their co-operation
the local community can look forward to enjoying the benefits of this infrastructure for many years to come.”
Submissions may be made to Meath County Council via the web portal ePlanning Portal or via email to planning@meathcoco.ie on or before 15th May 2025

Works on an interim measure to safeguard the water supply and improve reliability of the water network in Trim are under way with the commissioning of a new treatment system
it means that Trim residents are facing weeks of night time restrictions while the commissioning works are undertaken and a statement from Uisce Éireann on Friday confirms that it will need to tanker in water to the treatment plant to bolster the supply during this period
Uisce Éireann begins commissioning a new Dissolved Air Flotation and Filtration (DAFF) system to replace the existing unit at Trim Water Treatment Plant this week
representing a capital investment of approximately €1.5 million
the utility has warned that supply may be impacted for the duration of the works
This project is an interim measure to safeguard the water supply and improve reliability and resilience of the water network
Speaking about the benefits of the project
said: “The works carried out as part of this project will improve the reliability and resilience of the Water Treatment Plant and benefit over 12,000 customers in the community
“We would like to thank the people of Trim and surrounding areas for their patience while we work to commission this new process,” Ivan added
Project works commenced on site in 2024 and the commissioning works are now under way
the new DAFF treatment system will be operational by mid-February 2025
All works will be contained within Trim Water Treatment Plant
Due to critically low levels of water at the reservoir and to maintain a daytime supply for customers
Uisce Éireann says it will implement tankering of water to the treatment plant to maintain supply and facilitate commissioning of the new process
night-time restrictions will be in place for the duration of the works
The works may also involve some short-term water interruptions and the project team says it will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions
Customers are urged to conserve water for the duration of the works
The areas which may be impacted by these interim works include Trim
Local residents have once again been left frustrated over the ongoing restrictions and breaks in supply
a resident of Steeple Manor has questioned what is going on with the water supply that requires so many outages
we had at least eight days of daily shut offs
It has been turned off every night this week.”
Uisce Éireann says construction of a completely new Trim Water Treatment Plant is programmed to commence later in 2025
subject to the completion of procurement of the contractor to deliver the works

Deputy Dempsey outlined that she has got confirmation from Minister Chambers that the tender for the new visitor centre for Trim Castle will issue this year and said that it was "could be the biggest thing that's happened to the castle since Braveheart was filmed" in the town
"As a former chairperson of Boyne Valley Tourism
I have long fought for this centre to add to the town's global standing as a tourist destination
"Trim was identified by National Geographic as one of the top 100 places to bring your child to change their life and this centre will further bring the town's amazing past to life for today's children
I am absolutely delighted that the plans include a sensory space which will be hugely beneficial to this area
"I understand there are no plans to provide a cafe on site which will be a huge boost to our local businesses who I hope will benefit greatly from an increase in visitors to the new
This centre will help Trim and the North East rival the Wild Atlantic Way in terms of attracting tourists globally."
The ambitious plans will see the Market House building conserved
refurbished and extended to provide a state-of-the-art visitor centre
Central to the plan is the removal of the old dance hall along with the fly tower to open up views of the castle from the street
A modern extension of 200 square metres with a roof terrace is also to be added to the rear of the building

is one of Ireland’s most significant medieval landmarks and a key priority in this regard.”

and engagement at the site and that the proposed centre will provide state-of-the-art facilities for visitors
It will also serve as a hub for cultural and community events
"further embedding Trim Castle as a focal point for heritage and tourism in the region"
in collaboration with relevant stakeholders
including Meath County Council and the Department of Housing

Trim Market House is situated within the Trim Castle National Monument
being built partly over the castle moat and backing directly on to its curtain walls
