author of The Neighbourhood of Walkinstown: From countryside to city suburb
The author of a new book on the history of Walkinstown
says the project has been 25 years in the making
Robert Goggins (62) remembers a time “before a community was built here”
when there was “fields filled with farming
The Neighbourhood of Walkinstown: From countryside to city suburb
delves back to the times when the area was basically nothing but countryside
He tracks the development of the area from the first housing estates to be constructed in the late 1940s
right up to the more recent Wilkin’s View and Wilkin’s Court developments
and consisted of a handful of dwellings containing less than 100 inhabitants
Neighbouring Greenhills was of a similar size
the rapid spread of large-scale housing developments led to the emergence of a new suburb
has lived in the area since his family moved there when he was a baby
He began researching local history back in the 1990s but had to abandon it due to other pressures in life
not least his involvement with Shamrock Rovers Football Club
where he has been a volunteer for over 40 years
I never continued it because everything in life was so busy
I wanted to put some of the memories together
the book would capture the memories and they’re forever then
There would’ve been a few cottages dotted around the Greenhills area
a new housing scheme was formed in the west of Crumlin
They were the first large-scale developments in the area
there were still fields at the back of my house
that wasn’t for long because houses were built after that
all the children would play outside with toy cars
He researched and reproduced news items from the past 100 years for the book
including some good news stories which made the headlines
“Letters were sent into the Irish Independent and Evening Herald as the area was developing
complaining about the postal service,” he said
People used to write letters quite regularly to the newspapers
“There would be letters about dogs going missing
One particular dog went missing from Walkinstown Avenue for a whole year
“A woman down in Greystones remembered reading about him in the Evening Herald
dug out the newspaper and chased down the owner
believed to be by the Black and Tans in 1921
It was direct retaliation for an ambush on British Soldiers on the Long Mile Road by an IRA active unit
“There was also an attack on a place called Walkinstown House
It belonged to a famous man called Michael Flanagan who was on the council
two children were killed by a truck in 1956
one of those families suffered a second tragedy when another child of theirs drowned in Ringsend.”
Former TD and local councillor Charlie O’Connor paid tribute to his late friend and colleague Joe Connolly whose name comes up very often in the book
“Joe Connolly was a councillor on Dublin County Council
The amount of community work that man put into the area and how he championed the causes of groups here
“He’d always be the man helping to get parks and community centres
football pitches because he had this strong belief that they should be provided by the State for young people
“Joe Connolly was also a founding member of the Community Games which went on to be massive across the 32 counties,” he added

The National Transport Authority (NTA) has received notification of planning approval by An Bord Pleanála for the Tallaght/Clondalkin to City Centre Scheme
The Tallaght/Clondalkin to City Centre Scheme is part of the BusConnects Dublin programme
a key element of the Government’s policy to improve public transport and address climate change
The objectives of the Scheme include provision of necessary bus
The Tallaght/Clondalkin to City Centre scheme measures approximately 15.5km with an additional offline cycling facility approximately 3.9km in length consisting of two sections
namely the Tallaght to City Centre section and the Clondalkin to Drimnagh section
The Tallaght to City Centre section commences at the junction of Old Blessington Road / Cookstown Way and is routed along Belgard Square West
Old Greenhills Road to the junction of Greenhills Road and Bancroft Park
From here the Proposed Scheme is routed along the R819 Greenhills Road to Walkinstown Roundabout via new link roads; in the green area to the east of Birchview Avenue/Treepark Road; in the green area to the south of Ballymount Avenue
and in the green area to the east of Calmount Road
From Walkinstown Roundabout the main Core Bus Corridor is routed along the R819 Walkinstown Road to the junction with R110 Long Mile Road and Drimnagh Road
The Clondalkin to Drimnagh section commences at this junction and the Proposed Scheme is routed along the R110 to the junction of Dean Street and Patrick Street via Drimnagh Road
From here the Proposed Scheme is routed along the R137 via Patrick Street to the junction at Winetavern Street and Christchurch Place where the Proposed Scheme terminates within the City Centre
begins at the junction of New Nangor Road and Woodford Walk and is routed along the R134 New Nangor Road
R112 Walkinstown Avenue and the R110 Long mile Road to the junction of Walkinstown Road and Drimnagh Road
where it will join the Tallaght to City Centre section of the Proposed Scheme
The Proposed Scheme includes an offline cycle facility between Walkinstown Roundabout and Parnell Road (Grand Canal) which provides a more direct route towards the city via Bunting Road
all in the County of Dublin and within the South Dublin County Council (SDCC) and Dublin City Council (DCC) administrative areas
Subject to completion of various processes
the NTA will now be developing a construction sequence taking account of any planning consents received
along with documentation to allow procurement to commence for the construction stage of the Scheme
It is expected that all twelve corridors will be completed by 2030 with the first construction contracts to be awarded at the end of 2024 and on-site construction commencing early next year (2025). The construction of the corridors will be delivered on a phased basis in order to reduce the traffic impacts that could arise should all twelve be constructed concurrently
Detailed communication arrangements for the construction phase will be developed to ensure that residents
businesses and public representatives are kept fully informed and have access to relevant liaison personnel during the delivery of the Scheme
More information on the Tallaght/Clondalkin to City Centre Core Bus Corridor Scheme is available on the statutory planning application website at the following link www.tallaghtclondalkinscheme.ie

The Grafton Barber announced the launch of its first-ever autism-friendly barber shop and dedicated sensory room
This space was designed by Amanda Masterson
owner of The Grafton Barber Walkinstown branch and a mother to a child with autism
Amanda’s firsthand experience with the sensory challenges many children face during everyday routines inspired her to create a calm
inclusive environment tailored to neurodiverse children
especially those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
“A basic haircut can be a really overwhelming experience for many children and adults with autism and sensory sensitivities – so I truly welcome this new sensory barber in Walkinstown
I want to sincerely congratulate Amanda Masterson and her team at Grafton Barber
Walkinstown for leading the way and creating a space where everyone can feel comfortable
understood and respected,” said Catherine Ardagh
According to the CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network
1 in 36 children is diagnosed with ASD — a condition nearly four times more common in boys than girls
Creating sensory-friendly spaces like this one is a crucial step toward making everyday experiences
The Day Dreamers Sensory Room will officially open to the public on Thursday
This launch marks the first of many steps The Grafton Barber is taking to lead the way in inclusive
sensory-aware grooming — with plans already in motion to roll out similar rooms across other locations nationwide
