Reigning All-Ireland Under-20 champions Offaly have been dethroned at the provincial quarter-final stage
with Dublin firing three second-half goals to quash any back-to-back ambitions at St Conleth's Park
Offaly's class of 2024 claimed a memorable maiden All-Ireland title at the grade in June last year
an emotional triumph for a county which had spent so many years in the hurling wilderness
Donal Shirley and Shane Rigney still eligible to feature in the competition
there were high hopes of another tilt at silverware
A group-stage loss to Galway to Ballinasloe pitched them into this afternoon's quarter-final against Dublin
who survived a preliminary quarter-final with a three-point win over Antrim
Offaly were in control for much of the first half
with Ravenhill and Rigney chipping in with further points as they led 0-09 to 1-03 at the break
but for Callum Graham's scrappy 27th-minute goal which gave the underdogs a lifeline heading in at the break
The Dubs were level immediately on the restart
Offaly nosed back in front with points from Ravenhill and Leigh Kavanagh but Dublin hit the lead for the first time
Graham bagging his second goal on 37 minutes to leave the score at 3-04 to 0-11
Conal Ó Riain and Senan Crosbie all landing scores
as they nudged the lead out to four at 3-10 to 0-15 entering the final 10 minutes
When Gaffney slipped home his second goal on 56 minutes
The Dubs eased home on a 4-12 to 0-17 scoreline
The Dubs progress to face Kilkenny in the Leinster semi-final
The much-vaunted Offaly underage crop of 2024-25 are free to concentrate on the senior grade for the rest of the summer and beyond
Monday's other quarter-final yielded an even bigger upset
as Laois turned over Wexford in Chadwick's Wexford Park to continue the hosts' difficult fortnight
Laois entered the game of the back of a preliminary quarter-final win over Kildare
while Wexford pipped Dublin in the group stage
but it was the away side who built up a seven-point first half lead
with two more from Ruaidhrí Kavanagh saw them lead 0-14 to 0-07 after 25 minutes
They frittered away most of that advantage on the lead-in to half-time
Conor Fanning burying a goal for Wexford to leave it 0-15 to 1-11 at the interval
it was in the period after half-time that Laois really won the game
Justin Deegan finding the net shortly after the restart
with points from Deegan and Eoghan Cuddy pushing the lead out to six
Ben and Justin - all chipping in with more scores as they ran out 1-24 to 1-18 winners
This sets up a semi-final shot at redemption against Galway
against whom they lost by 23 points in Portlaoise just over a month ago

Cody Jordan-Nolan pulled one back in the 79th minute

Lachlan O’Neill got a late goal from United
but it did little to dampen the spirits of the All Blacks contingent
Bree United finished in second place after a 3-2 away win against Camolin Celtic

The remains of a shipwrecked vessel from the eighteenth century may have been located off the South Wexford coast
The British Merchant ship the Recovery was on route from London to Dublin in 1787 with valuable Italian marble statues and other treasures when it hit a storm with the loss of its captain and six crew members off Carnsore Point
The valuable items contained in the cargo were destined to adorn the newly built Custom House in Dublin and the home in County Wicklow of the one of the founders of the Bank of Ireland John La Touche
The dive team of five was led by local maritime researcher Edmond O’Byrne from Kilmore Quay
He says the wreck is submerged in a sand bank about half a mile off the coast and there are no plans to explore the sunken vessel and its possible treasure trove unless the sand bank moves and exposes more of the thirty metre long sunken ship

Cllr Walsh also suggested that local traders and the Chamber of Commerce should be invited into Wexford County Hall on a regular basis to discuss any issues they’re having

A packed South Main Street on Friday evening during Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann
While many business owners are eagerly awaiting Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2025
for some Wexford residents the prospect of more than 650,000 people descending upon the town is proving less than appealing
Describing the 2024 edition as “a week of hell”
a Wexford county councillor has said those living in Bride Street have asked that organisers of this year’s event meet with them to discuss the impact it will have on them
Cllr Ray Shannon relayed their concerns at the April meeting of the Wexford Borough District (WBD)
“The people in Bride St had great difficulty accessing their own homes during the Fleadh last year
is there anyone who could meet with them to discuss this?” he asked
“At the moment they are planning on putting an objection in
they’re just anti having it outside their homes
They said they had a week of hell last year
Having witnessed first-hand how last year’s event was organised
Cllr Shannon’s colleagues also had some suggestions as to how the 2025 edition could be improved
is there any way we can make it more accessible for those with disabilities?" asked Cllr Robbie Staples
in terms of transport from rural areas like Crossabeg
is there a possibility buses could be extended out to those villages
It would keep more cars off the road and logistically it makes sense.”
Transport was also on Cllr Tom Forde’s mind with his concerns centring around the loss of earnings for local taxi drivers
“A lot of the drivers were not happy with the move from Dunne’s Stores to 1798 St
they said they were down significant earnings as a result
I know it’s not a long distance away but the drivers said that a lot of people weren’t aware of where to go
They have asked that the rank be left where it is.”
Fielding their queries and vowing to look into these issues
council official Eimear Kennedy said that one of the primary concerns for festival organisers was finding accommodation for those making their way to Wexford in August
“We’re looking for accommodation providers
if any members of the public have a spare room they might consider making it available
The biggest requirement for accommodation will be from the Thursday – Sunday
it will prove more difficult to find someone to stay for the other days.”

Barbara is one half of the ‘So You Think You Are An Adult’ slot (with Declan Buckley) every week on the Moncrieff Show on Newstalk
and ever since she has been on a mission to change the narrative around ageing
In 2023 she dipped her toe into the comedy ocean for the first time and realised she could make people laugh
She also realised that comedy was a great way to continue to deliver her message of positive ageing
Wiser is a combination of comedy and story telling
both of which sold out and received standing ovations
she has performed at Dalkey Comedy Festival and at the dlr Mill Theatre in Dundrum
She is now taking her show on the road and is coming to Wexford on Friday May 23 to perform at the Wexford Arts Centre
“I am thrilled to be coming to Wexford with my own show,” Barbara says
“I am looking forward to the audience how ageing can actually be quite delicious
especially when you realise you no longer give a damn about so many things.”
rollercoaster journey of storytelling and stand-up comedy as Barbara muses on some of the absurdities of being a woman along with the joy of getting older
She says that once you stop paying attention to the messages about anti-ageing and other nonsense around how women should be in the world
full of freedoms and the opportunity to do things that you have not been able to in earlier decades
The problem is that no one tells you about it
Possibly because this is the very time when women actually step into their matriarchal power and have the ability to be all kinds of bold,” she says
“I want everyone to leave the show having had a bellyful of laughs and feeling more positive about getting older than perhaps they were when they arrived.”
the Wexford Football League Division 5 champions
Tombrack United’s ‘B’ team wrapped up the Division 5 title on Friday when a strong second-half performance saw them beat a dogged Taghmon side 3-0
Tombrack were ten points clear in this division but a glitch on the run-in saw them draw two games while also suffering two defeats to their closest challengers
They went into their final match needing at least a point to secure the title
While they were always in control of the game
it was always possible that Taghmon could sneak a winner
but a goal from Josh McMullen with three minutes remaining settled the nerves
prolific goalscorer Brian Hancock made it 2-0 and when McMullen scored his second in injury-time
the celebrations were well and truly under way
This title capped off a great week for the club
with the first team securing promotion on Wednesday when Ballymurn beat Rosslare Rangers
ensuring they would be playing Division 1 football next season
The Division 5 title win made up for the disappointment of losing 2-1 to Bridge Rovers in the Gwyn Jones Cup semi-final the previous Sunday
The title is the reward for a lot of hard work put in by manager Seán McGovern and his young squad
and they will now regroup and begin preparations for life in Division 4A next season
Top scorer Brian Hancock will have an interest in the Wexford Football League awards night where he is one of the nominees for Division 5 Player of the Year
Tombrack United: Evan Murphy; Ryan Dobbs (capt.)
On Sunday Gorey Rangers moved level with Corach Ramblers in second spot by beating the Danescastle outfit 3-1 in Altura Credit Union Park
Adam Scott fired the visitors in front midway through the first-half
but Richard Levingston quickly replied and a Jamie Gilligan goal had Rangers ahead at the break
Levingston grabbed his second goal in the 67th minute to wrap up the victory
The U16 New Ross Sparks boys basketball team has lit up the court this season with a phenomenal performance
finishing their Division 2 KKSE League campaign with a perfect ten wins from ten games
The team’s success didn’t stop at their league win as the Sparks went on to conquer the Top Four Tournament in Kilkenny on April 5
beating a very strong Portlaoise squad 49-42 in the finals
“The team combines talented players from New Ross with dedicated players travelling up from Wexford Town
Their success this season is all the more impressive
given the journey this team has taken,” explained one of the team’s coaches
they suffered several defeats that could have crushed their confidence
the players with the help of their coaching team regrouped and transformed themselves into a formidable force for the 2024/2025 season,” he added
praised the players' commitment throughout the season
with Mr Thiel commenting that the team has “worked hard on and off the court
and to the town is something truly special,” Mr Thiel said
who have supported the boys every step of the way
The club also thanked sponsors such as South East Vegetables and Cairn Construction
Liu Dos Santos celebrating the tenth anniversary of the programme
Rachel CahillEnniscorthy GuardianYesterday at 04:00Liu dos Santos has made an incredible journey over the last three years – from living in Mozambique during political unrest and economic crisis to pursuing her education and career in the welcoming community of Enniscorthy
lived in Mozambique with her parents after returning from South Africa during the Covid-19 pandemic
her former partner Ashley Maher found himself unemployed as the economic state of the country was very bad
we completely lost all hope,” she admitted
with his grandfather being Irish and holding Irish citizenship himself
they thought it would be a good idea to move to Ireland
he travelled to England where he worked to save money for their big move and received a job offer in Enniscorthy where he now works in Centra
especially since her parents and other relatives still live there
Mozambique is very beautiful and warm and the food is amazing
but it is not a great place if you want access to opportunities
A big concern is the political unrest in her home country following the 2019 elections and claims of fraud by opposing political parties
President Filipe Nyusi of the ruling FRELIMO party was re-elected with a large majority of the vote (73 per cent)
with his main challenger of the opposition party RENAMO receiving just 22 per cent
RENAMO and other parties accused FRELIMO of ballot box stuffing
voter intimidation and manipulation of the electoral process
that has ignited once again following the 2024 election with FRELIMO keeping power once again
there is a lot of uncertainty because of the post-election crisis
There is a lot of violence between the police and public because everyone wants truth and proof as there has been a lot of fraud
It is really upsetting because my family is there
you can’t really enjoy life with that in the back of your mind,” she explained
Liu is currently doing an apprenticeship with Roban Financial that allows her to pursue her education at the same time
with hopes that she can realise her childhood dream
"Growing up I always imagined myself as a big businesswoman with a suit and heels

Keith Rossiter is hopeful that he will be able to call on the services of experienced duo Liam Ryan and Conor McDonald when Wexford travel to Salthill to take on Galway in the Leinster Senior hurling championship on Saturday (3.15 p.m.)

with collaboration from the local community and the Rapparees Starlight’s Finance Committee raising €400,000; Wexford County Council providing funds of €400,000
and a greatly appreciated donation from Mr Sam McCauley of €600,000

Isabel ColleranGorey GuardianSun 4 May 2025 at 08:00Ballyoughter Drama Group made a donation of €500 to Courtown RNLI recently
after being selected by a local commercial fisherman who recognised the invaluable service they provide
Courtown RNLI was selected as the recipient for the generous donation by Ballyoughter Drama Group’s cast member Paul Goff
who most recently took to the stage as a doctor but has acted in various with the group over the years
Paul is a commercial fisherman by day and an actor by night
and his work at sea has provided him with certain insight into the Courtown RNLI’s invaluable service
he’s had to call on the RNLI services in the past and because he is operating out of Courtown Harbour and Arklow
He has an understanding of how valuable they can actually physically be to people and how quick they can be on site.”
The funds are raised from ticket sales across the four nights of Ballyoughter Drama Group’s play each year
Some organisations receive an annual contribution while other organisations are selected by members of the group
there’s teas and coffees and buns given out
I’d say the tickets each year are sold out regularly to the same people,” said Liz
The RNLI is a voluntary organisation which relies on donations from the public to continue to save lives
Courtown RNLI has provided search and rescue cover in the area for over 75 years and now operates an inshore D class lifeboat
"I actually think the people behind the yellow boots who go out to sea are not highlighted enough
someday if we’re out at sea and we’re at trouble
They’re extremely well-trained and they regularly practice down in Courtown but the big thing is that they are volunteers
"Volunteerism unfortunately is a dying ask today
we do need to celebrate that we have these motivated volunteers,” said Liz

Justin Duggan scored a goal for Laois against Wexford in the Leinster U/20 Hurling Championship at Wexford Park Photo: Paul Dargan
DEREK Delaney and his U/20 Laois hurlers made the trip to Chadwick’s Wexford Park on the bank holiday Monday afternoon where Wexford awaited to see who would earn a semifinal spot this year. Laois triumphed over neighbours Kildare in the preliminary quarter-final two weeks ago to earn their place in today’s quarter-final.
Jer Quinlan opened the scoring for Laois inside the first minute of play. The home side responded strong with three scores in a row courtesy of a Simon Roche free, accompanied by Paidi Doyle and David McCarthy from play. Cormac Byrne and Jack Breen raised white flags for Laois while Jack Nolan and Ciaran Doyle did likewise for Wexford. The following four scores were traded with Breen and Joseph Pearson pointing for Laois while Eoin Hughes and Roche split the posts for the Yellow Bellies.
The away side gained huge momentum for the following 10 minutes in which they pointed nine scores in a row with no response from their opposition. Justin Duggan and Ruaidhri Kavanagh opened their accounts before a Wexford shot from Cillian Byrne was guided out for a 65’ by Brochan O’Reilly, Roche failed to point the 65’ which fell to the hands of O’Reilly who then found Kavanagh allowing his point his second of the contest.
Ben Deegan pointed three in a row with teo coming from placed balls while Rory Kelly pointed a super before Ben Deegan added a third free. Laois found themselves a goal scoring opportunity but Ross Deegan lost his hurl on the build up leaving his only option to kick the ball which landed over the bar.
Laois allowed the home side right back into the game before the interval, having racked up a seven-point lead they only headed to the dressing room one up (0-15 to 1-11). Roche pointed a free followed by one from play while Kelly pointed his second for Laois in response. In the final three minutes, Wexford nailed 1-2 past the Laois defence. The points came from Nolan and a Roche free while Conor Fanning found the back of the net having been set up by a hand pass over the top from Colin Carley.
A free landed the between the posts from Ben Deegan got the second half underway. Laois raised a green flag only a minute later when a shot from Duggan was fumbled over the goal line. Roche pointed from a placed ball while a Ben Deegan free and Duggan from play pushed Laois six points ahead as they entered the final quarter.
A goal opportunity arose for Wexford but a combination of determination from Pearson and Tom Cuddy blocked down the shot. Roche (65’) and Duggan traded scores while Ben Deegan pointed two free with a Roche free in between. Ross Deegan stepped up and pointed his second. The home side created another goal opportunity, but it was O’Reilly to the rescue as he denied Roche’s volley, advantage was given and the free was pointed by Roche.
Ryan Donoghue and Padraig Jones raised white flags for Wexford while Ben Deegan replied pointing two frees. Roche pointed the final score of the game from a placed ball meaning six points separated the sides at full time. Laois will now face Galway in the Leinster semifinal on Wednesday 14 May.
