Gardaí became increasingly concerned as a missing persons inquiry in 2017 into the whereabouts of Tina Satchwell produced no evidence as to where she might be, the Central Criminal Court in Dublin has been told
Retired sergeant John Sharkey, formerly of Youghal Garda Station, Co Cork, said that in the two or three weeks after Ms Satchwell was formally reported missing by her husband, Richard Satchwell, on May 11th, 2017, he became suspicious something “untoward” had happened.
In an application for a search warrant to the District Court at Youghal on June 2nd, 2017, Sgt Sharkey said Mr Satchwell had told gardaí his wife had assaulted him previously and that he, Sgt Sharkey, suspected Ms Satchwell “may have been injured or incapacitated in a criminal event”.
Sgt Sharkey was responding to questions from Brendan Grehan SC, counsel for Mr Satchwell (58), who denies the murder of his 45-year-old wife, Tina, at their home at No 3 Grattan Street, Youghal, between March 19th and 20th, 2017. Her body was found in the house in October 2023.
It is the second day of evidence in the trial before a jury presided over by Mr Justice Paul McDermott.
Asked about his suspicions concerning about Ms Satchwell at the time the search warrant was applied for, Sgt Sharkey said he was not alone within the gardaí in having suspicions as to what may have happened.
“It would have been a corporate suspicion,” he said.
Sgt Sharkey told the court the station in Youghal first became aware of concerns about Ms Satchwell in late March or early April when her husband told the station in Fermoy she had left home suddenly.
Garda Cathal Whelan told Gerardine Small SC, for the prosecution, he had taken photographs of the Satchwell home on Grattan Street during the June 7th search.
He described the old three storey house as untidy and unkempt, with a birdcage that had not been cleaned in a long time, a number of dog boxes, and unwashed dishes in the kitchen.
One upstairs room contained hundreds of items of clothing hanging on rails, and there was further clothing in a room in the attic, as well as a sunbed, he said.
A senior officer also testified on Wednesday that Mr Satchwell, a truck driver originally from Leicester in the UK, told him Ms Satchwell had physically assaulted him in the past and on two occasions, “knocked him out cold”. Mr Satchwell said he had never once reacted to “these outbursts” and instead would “drive away and have a cry”.
Inspector Daniel Holland told Ms Small that Mr Satchwell voluntarily attended Midleton Garda Station the day after the search. The Insp said they talked about the couple’s relationship and Mr Satchwell explained how he had given up a lot of his life to be with Tina, that his family didn’t approve of the relationship and they no longer spoke to him. The accused said he wanted to have children but his wife didn’t.
Mr Satchwell had told the Inspector that Ms Satchwell’s mood had deteriorated prior to Christmas 2016 and she had assaulted him the week before she went missing.
Mr Holland said the accused told him he fully expected his wife to return home but he was concerned that publicity from the social media appeals may be an obstacle to her returning, in that people might ridicule her for leaving in the first place.
The jury also on Wednesday viewed video clips of Mr Satchwell making media appeals about his wife months after he is alleged to have murdered her, telling RTÉ viewers: “Tina come home, no one’s mad at you, the pets are missing you like crazy, we just want and need you back”.

A garda has described Richard Satchwell's 'untidy' house with dog faeces on the floor and recent plaster work under the stairs during a search of the home in June 2017, one month after Tina was reported missing.
Garda Cathal Whelan, a crime scenes investigator with Cobh Garda Station, described how he was tasked with taking photos of number 3 Grattan Street on June 7, 2017, after gardai obtained a search warrant amid the first suspicions by the Sergeant in charge that "something criminal had occurred."
Richard Satchwell (58), who is originally from Coalville in the United Kingdom, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of his wife Tina at the home they shared at number three Grattan Street in Youghal, Co Cork, sometime between March 19 and 20, 2017.
Garda Whelan told the trial today, at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin, that he took photos of the three-storey semi-detached home, which he said was an old house that was probably over 100 years old. He described how the house was "untidy, unkept," there were unwashed dishes, there was "some dog faeces on the floor", and a bird cage "that hadn't been cleaned out in a long time."
Garda Whelan described 12 photos taken of the interior of the house. An album of photos was shown to the jurors. One of the photos was of the interior of a storage space under the stairs of the home, which could be accessed from the living room.
"The stairs appeared to be made of relatively new untreated unpainted wood, the wall at the stairs had unpainted plasterboard, which again looked relatively new," he told the court.
He also confirmed to Defence Counsel Brendan Grehan SC that there appeared to be some repair work going on at the time gardai searched the house, and that he took photos of plasterboard on the stairwell.
Earlier, retired Garda Sergeant John Sharkey confirmed he first became aware of a report made by Richard Satchwell at Fermoy Garda station "indicating loosely that his wife had departed the family home suddenly and without explanation.
Mr Sharkey told the court that as time passed, "our concern grew for the welfare of Ms Tina Satchwell," and confirmed the investigation became a missing persons probe after Mr Satchwell made a formal missing persons report on May 11, 2017.
The former Garda Sergeant said that the outcome of that investigation "unfortunately didn't lead us to Ms Tina Satchwell.
"We were fruitless, I suppose. Then, come late May, start of June, having reviewed the evidence... I formed the opinion that something criminal may have occurred."
Mr Sharkey said that he went to a Judge on June 2, 2017 and set out grounds to get a search warrant for Number 3 Grattan Street. On June 7 at approximately 7 am, he attempted to execute that warrant but found Mr Satchwell was not home.
He phoned Mr Satchwell and told him of the warrant, then obtained the help of a locksmith to gain access to the house. The witness also stated that he obtained CCTV footage of who he believed to be Mr Satchwell in Youghal Post Office on March 20, 2017.
Asked by Mr Grehan SC when did the garda probe move from a missing persons investigation to suggesting something "more sinister," Mr Sharkey said that around two or three weeks after Mr Satchwell made his missing persons report and "after we carried out a number of enquiries, due to a lack of progress, I became suspicious that something untoward had occurred."
He also confirmed that this was the view of other investigating gardai at the time in late May 2017.
In May 2017, Gardai carried out a media and social media campaign, the court heard, putting out a photo of Tina and asking people to come forward with any information.
Asked if gardai generated any useful information from that appeal, Mr Sharkey said they didn't. Mr Grehan asked Mr Sharkey what gardai were searching for when they went into the house in June.
"It was a general search. We were searching for evidence, and what form that took, it remained to be seen," Mr Sharkey responded.
Mr Grehan said he took it that it wasn't intended to be a cursory, simple search. The witness responded: "It was a thorough, formal search and the services of a garda search team were provided for that purpose."
He also stated that there were "perhaps up to 10 gardai" involved in the June 2017 search, as well as a person from Forensic Science Ireland who attended to see if there was any blood spatter. The Garda search of the house concluded at around 5 pm, while the blood testing concluded around 7 pm, the witness said. The trial continues this afternoon.
A man has died and another has been taken into Garda custody after a stabbing incident in Youghal, Co Cork on Monday night.
It is understood a row broke out between two men in a pub in the east Cork town at around 9.50pm and that one man was stabbed.
Paramedics arrived on the scene on North Main Street and worked to stabilise the injured man, who was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital (CUH).
However, the victim (31) had suffered serious wounds to the abdomen area and was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital. The deceased was originally from Mallow but had been living in Youghal in recent years.
An Garda Síochána said a number of scenes were being preserved ahead of examinations by the technical bureau.
“A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Midleton Garda Station,” the force said in a statement. “A Family Liaison Officer (FLO) will be assigned to support the family of the deceased.”
A man (29) presented himself at Midleton Garda station at around 3am and was arrested for questioning about the fatal assault.
He is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows gardaí to detain suspects for up to 24 hours before they must be charged or released.
Gardaí have started harvesting CCTV footage from premises along Youghal’s North Main Street in the hope that it might assist their investigation.
The services of the State Pathologist Office have been requested and a postmortem is expected to be conducted on the deceased at the CUH morgue later on Tuesday.
Gardaí are expected to formally begin a murder inquiry following the receipt of the results of the examination.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or with information is asked to contact gardaí in Midleton on (021) 4621550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

The Courts Service is moving ahead with the transfer of sittings from Youghal in Co Cork to Dungarvan
meaning a 60km round tip for gardaí and court attendees.
It also plans to move sittings from Cashel and Carrick-on-Suir to Clonmel
A spokesman for the Courts Service has confirmed that the district judge assigned to the areas wrote to the Head of Circuit & District Court Operations in March indicating that he is transferring the sittings
The transfer comes into effect from November 1
with effect from June 1 there will be an extra sitting in District 21 on the second Friday of each month where cases from Youghal will be heard in Dungarvan," a spokesperson said.
"It’s planned that this additional sitting will be for Child and Family Agency matters
Details of these changes among others...can be found on the Courts Service website,” the spokesman said
He added that the Courts Service has now commenced engaging with the various stakeholders such as legal practitioners
local family law user representative groups
to explore any possible impacts and unintended consequences of the proposed transfers
The spokesman added that it “has no record of having received communications about this matter from Cork County Council"
That came as a surprise to Youghal-based Independent councillor Mary Linehan-Foley who won unanimous support at a council meeting three weeks ago to write to the Courts Service and department of justice urging it to keep court sittings where they are
including Fianna Fáil councillor Ann Marie Ahern
said the closure of Youghal courthouse would be a retrograde step
They said it would lead to a reduced garda presence in Youghal because they would be out of the town far longer while attending cases in Dungarvan
the move would put an extra financial burden on witnesses
especially if they had to pay for bus journeys between the two towns
claimed that since court sittings transferred from Cobh to Midleton there has been a lower presence of gardaí in the harbour town
A 29-year-old has been remanded in custody after he was charged with the murder of a man who died after being stabbed in a pub in Co Cork on Monday.
Reese Keogh, with an address at North Main Street, Youghal, appeared before Midleton District Court on Wednesday charged with the murder of Daniel O’Sullivan (31) at Tynan’s Bar, North Main Street, Youghal on April 14th.
Det Garda John O’Donovan gave evidence of arresting, charging and cautioning Mr Keogh on Wednesday.
He said that he arrested the accused at 3.06am and charged him at 3.25am with Mr O’Sullivan’s murder. He said Mr Keogh replied “not guilty” after caution.
Judge Miriam Walsh said bail was not available at District Court level for an accused on a murder charge.
Sgt Linda O’Leary sought a remand in custody to Fermoy District Court on April 23rd.
Defence solicitor Joe Cuddigan said the prison authorities should be aware that Mr Keogh is “a vulnerable person” who should be given any appropriate psychiatric care while on remand.
Judge Walsh directed the prison authorities to provide all necessary psychiatric care to the accused.
She also granted him free legal aid on hearing he was in receipt of social welfare.
Mr O’Sullivan was a native of Carrowkeel in Mallow but had been living in Youghal since 2023. He is survived by his mother, Aileen and sisters, Samantha and Jessica.
Gardaí have formally launched a murder investigation into the death of a 31-year-old man after receiving the results of a postmortem
which confirmed he was stabbed a number of times
who has been named locally as Daniel O’Sullivan
was in Tynan’s Bar on North Main Street in Youghal when a man entered at around 9.50pm on Monday and attacked him
Mr O’Sullivan collapsed after suffering a number of stab wounds to the abdomen
Emergency services worked to try to stabilise Mr O’Sullivan’s condition for transfer to hospital but while he was en route to Cork University Hospital he suffered a cardiac event
It’s understood he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital’s emergency department
A postmortem by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster confirmed Mr O’Sullivan suffered stab wounds and gardaí immediately upgraded their investigation to a murder inquiry
The man who attacked Mr O’Sullivan fled the pub after the attack but gardaí were able to identify him from witness statements
A 29-year-old man presented himself at Midleton Garda station on Tuesday morning and he was arrested for questioning
The suspect is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act
which allows gardaí to detain suspects for up to 24 hours before they must be charged or released without charge
Gardaí are investigating whether the fatal assault on Mr O’Sullivan is linked to an earlier incident in Youghal on Monday night when a man in his 20s was assaulted by a number of men
Mr O’Sullivan was known to gardaí and had served five years in jail after he was convicted in 2016 of the manslaughter of French homeless man Vincent Morgaine in Cork
Mr O’Sullivan, then aged 22, pleaded guilty at Cork Circuit Criminal Court to unlawfully killing Mr Morgain from Brittany on Lower Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork on September 10th, 2015.
At the sentencing hearing, the court heard that Mr O’Sullivan had become upset and expressed remorse for his actions when he was arrested and questioned about the fatal assault.
Judge Sean Ó Donnabháin sentenced Mr O’Sullivan to eight years in jail with three years suspended. Mr Morgain’s sister Marie Thomas expressed hope the young man would turn his life around.
“I am happy with the sentence – he got the sentence that he deserved and rightly so, but it is not the sentence which preoccupies me most,” said Ms Thomas speaking through an interpreter.
“I hope that Daniel avails of the services in Cork Prison because I really want him to show real remorse for what happened and for him to get back in life and maybe help others,” she added.
More recently, in 2018, probation officer Sharon Kennedy told a court that Mr O’Sullivan was a young man with great potential who needed to address his heroin addiction to realise that potential.
Defence barrister Dermot Sheehan BL confirmed at the same hearing his client was suffering from a heroin addiction, and said his client recognised he needed to address his drugs problem.
“He understands he needs treatment for heroin. He wants to get on with his life, free from the chains on him at the moment – his addiction to heroin, begging on the street and homelessness.
Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan. File photo
The Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan is to receive an official invitation to visit Youghal town as the East Cork town bids to retain the existing court services in Mall House.
A motion was tabled at last Monday’s full council meeting by three councillors Cllr Ann-Marie Ahern, Cllr Mary Lenihan-Foley and Cllr Michael Hegarty requesting that Cork County Council write to Minister O’Callaghan to retain the court services in Mall House in Youghal and that it is not moved to Dungarvan.
The three councillors said they brought the motion in a bid to retain current services and employment within the town of Youghal and to ensure that a continued permanent garda presence remains in Youghal Garda Station.
Cllr Ahern said the invitation to the Minister for Justice needs to be expedited to ensure the full transfer to Dungarvan doesn’t take place. “I would like to ask if Minister Jim O’Callaghan would come down and meet with the three proposers of the motion so we can ensure the service is retained in Youghal and a full garda presence current to what is there at the moment is also retained.
“We need it to be expedited if possible because I understand they are hoping to have this done by June. We can’t afford to have it done by the summer months,” she added.
Independent councillor Mary Lenihan Foley said transferring the court services out of Cork to Waterford doesn’t add up. “Back in 2022 something similar was proposed and Deputy Sherlock at that time had to work hard to make sure it didn’t happen. There is a catchment of 15,000 that use this court service in Youghal town. We must be aware that this is transferring court services from County Cork to County Waterford. I know we are near, but this doesn’t add up to me.”
Cllr Lenihan Foley said people on low-incomes would be greatly affected by the relocation of the court services to Dungarvan. “The people that would have to travel, people who would be on low-incomes that wouldn’t be able to travel to Dungarvan. You have family courts, circuit court and all types of court that happen in the Youghal area for the Youghal people. We must not sit back on this and make sure that the court services in the Youghal area are not removed.”
Fine Gael councillor Michael Hegarty agreed that it is ‘crucial’ that the service is retained in Youghal town. “There is also the district courts appeals that are held there as well. The actual domestic situations that may arise, it would be very unfair to the people involved to have to travel to Dungarvan. It is crucial that this service is retained and maintained for the people who have to use it on occasions.”
“We can’t accept a reduction in services,” said Social Democrats councillor Eamonn Horgan said: “Youghal has doubled in size in the last few years. There is a need to protect these services from a council level.”
It was unanimously agreed that an official letter would be sent to Minister O’Callaghan inviting him to visit Youghal to meet with public representatives in a bid to convince him to retain the court services in the town.

the moving of court sittings which is proposed to go ahead in June would have a negative impact on current services and employment
and could leave the local Garda station closed for a number of days during each sitting
Ms Ahern told the council that it would be detrimental to the area if the sittings were to be moved from their current location at the Mall House in the town
“We’re looking forward to keeping the conviction rate in East Cork low
but the actual basis for the motion is the fact that they’re looking to move the court services from the Mall House in Youghal down to Dungarvan,” she said
Ms Ahern said that she would also like to add an invitation for justice minister Jim O’Callaghan to come to the area to meet the three councillors proposing the motion
Ms Linehan Foley recalled that something similar had been attempted in 2022
but that this had been opposed by the then Cork East TD Sean Sherlock
“It must also be mentioned that people would have to travel
people on low incomes that wouldn’t be able to travel to Dungarvan
Mr Hegarty said it would be “very unfair” to people who were involved or concerned to have to travel to Dungarvan
A number of other councillors contributed to the debate supporting the motion asking the council to write a letter to the Minister seeking this move to be stopped
The motion was subsequently passed by the council
Oleksandra Poddubova, Olena Deriy and Olena Podlipska. Olena Deriy runs a popular salon in Youghal that is now under threat of closure.
if hundreds of "difficult to replace" Ukrainian workers — many of whom have lived in the area for more than two years — are forced to leave
The warning comes from Youghal's business leaders following the news that about 400 Ukrainians, plus approximately 150 school-going children
have been told they must vacate the former Quality hotel at Redbarn by February 7.
The residents received the eviction letters from the Department of Integration earlier this week
effectively giving them just two weeks to find new homes.
“The department is consolidating its accommodation portfolio in line with the changing circumstances
which includes fewer people arriving from Ukraine and an increase in the number leaving State-funded accommodation,” the letter reads
your accommodation at the Quality Hotel at Redbarn
we must relocate you to new accommodation on or before 07/02/2025."
With private accommodation extremely scarce in the seaside town
many now fear the Ukrainian families will be forced to leave the area
Up to 100 Ukrainians are estimated to have found employment in the region
“They work across a wide range of sectors”
Chairperson of the Youghal Business Alliance
who has employed Ukrainians as coffee shop assistants
says “moving them will create a considerable vacuum and put some businesses under pressure to complete contracts
most of whom have been with us for two years
They are brilliant workers and will be difficult to replace
whose business operates across south Munster
says the workers want to leave the hotel and the social welfare regime but cannot find anywhere to rent
He said when the workers received the eviction news earlier this week
“some of them arrived into work in tears after dropping their children to school
who arrived in Youghal with her teenage daughter and her mother in 2022
She has been unable to find private accommodation despite months of searching
She says the emotional impact has been enormous
with her daughter suffering sleep interruptions and her mother enduring chest pains and heightened blood pressure
Katyolana estimates their contribution to the local economy at “about €400 a week”
Olena Deriy is a Ukrainian employer whose business is now facing closure
The 26-year-old mother of four runs a hair
The popular salon’s spacious surrounds make it particularly suitable for people with disabilities
Olena recently managed to source private accommodation
but because her specialist staff face now face eviction she may have to close
“It is very hard to find qualified personnel locally,” she explains
“My staff also have their own clients here
One of them does not speak English and will not find another job easily
They are very upset and we have even considered sleeping in the salon so we can stay working”
Cork East Fianna Fáil TD James O’Connor says he has “received over a dozen calls from very frustrated business people who will be directly affected
He says the eviction will have “a big impact on schools’ pupil/student ratio
together with the recruitment of Ukrainians from the former hotel as translators and administrators
said he feared many of the 50 Ukrainian pupils in the school will be “scattered across the country"
He said the school was now at risk of losing staff due to the decision
“The knock-on effect will be to staffing in the school
We will lose approximately 2.5 SNAs and more than likely one full-time teacher
"The SNAs are employed for Ukrainian children but they are also used by Irish children
It will impact the fabric of our whole school
James O Connor said he contacted “both outgoing Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman and the Secretary General of the Department" about the issued but "the feedback has been incredibly disappointing”
The TD says he will be “raising it with the new minister as soon as the Dáil reconvenes”

Youghal players celebrate after defeating Ballinora in the Co-Op Superstores U21 B HC final at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoumh 4G
The celebrations at the end of it all were bittersweet for Youghal
Joy and relief – two overriding emotions for this group of players to get over the line and win an U21 county for the first time
under the floodlights in Páirc Uí Chaoimh’s 4G
grief and sadness – for the loss of former chairman Jerry Russell who passed away suddenly on Friday
A minute’s silence was observed prior to the game
but the loss of Jerry was petrol to a flame for Youghal
who were already determined to get over the line and win the U21 B Hurling Championship title
Their determination was clear when James Murray landed his fourth point from play in the 46th minute to put Youghal in front for the first time since the opening quarter
giving the east Cork side a 0-11 to 0-10 advantage
His celebrations after landing the point were telling
While Ben Mayer drew level for Ballinora five minutes later
They went searching for the goal that continued to elude both teams – and while Oisin Hill had two chances in the space of a minute
the first went over the bar and the second went out for a 65
Devon O’Donoghue converted that 65 with seven minutes to go
but when Andrew O’Sullivan worked the space to shoot
his point restored Ballinora’s deficit to the minimum
Ballinora's Ivan Quirke wins the sliotar from Youghal's Devon O'Donoghue
Picture: Eddie O'HareYoughal still couldn’t raise a green flag
as Brian Lynch was brilliantly denied by Donnacha Murphy – but Murray was there again to send it between the posts heading into added time
A couple of frees from Murray gave the east Cork side the safety net they needed
even if Liam Lyons was able to reduce the lead to three with a late free of the game
Enda Cronin and Conor Galvin show their joy

Youghal’s county success now ensures a clean sweep for the Imokilly division in U21 hurling
though they were made work for it by a Ballinora side without their star man – All-Ireland U20 winner Shane Kingston
The mid-Cork side were much more efficient in the first half playing with the wind
their three-point lead reflective of that at the break
Ballinora had drawn level a second time by the 16th minute at 0-4 each
and they took control in the second quarter
They outscored the east Cork side 0-5 to 0-2 for the remainder of the half
with Mayer’s two scores from play the pick of the efforts
Youghal were struggling with wides but on the resumption upped the ante
before a brace from Casey landed either side of a Mayer free for Ballinora
Ballinora's Billy Carbery clears from Youghal's Conor Galvin
Picture: Eddie O'HareBoth Enda Cronin and Senan O’Brien made their presence known in defence for Youghal
particularly the former as he thundered forward for an excellent socre to level it for the third time heading into the final quarter
Murray would go on to nudge Youghal in front – and while there was still a lot more work to do
there was a sense that was the turning point

That is of course no different to this group of Youghal hurlers
They topped their group in the east Cork U21 championship
They headed to the county section representing Imokilly
defeating west Cork side Cill Mochomóg in the quarter-final before also trouncing Kanturk-Dromtarriffe in the semis
Then it was back to east Cork – with a win over St Colmcille’s securing a place in the final
The decider was against none other than St Catherine’s – the origin of Youghal’s former chairman Jerry Russell
Youghal came out on top – edging it with a last gasp point
two days prior to that county final against Ballinora
Youghal’s celebrations were joyful – but emotional
because there was one man absent from the celebrations
but he was the life and soul of the club – he'd do anything for you,” club chairman and U21 manager Alan Geary began

“All he was looking forward to – was to come up to the county final today,” he said
“I’m just delighted we were able to do it for him
“We played seven matches; we won all seven of them
I’m so proud of the management and the players
and I just hope this is the start of something good.” Even though Youghal trailed at the half-time break – Geary never had any doubt that his players were going to come through and win it
We just told them to keep at it and got a couple of messages across
“We had a fella up in the sky playing with us
“It’s grand for the management; we wanted to do it for Jerry
we kept driving it into them all week to do it for themselves
we feel as if we’re going in the right direction
We’ve been winning counties underage for the last two or three years
and we feel this is just the start of something
hopefully it really is the start of something special for Youghal GAA.”
