Egypt came at a high personal cost she faced numerous threats and severe reprisals for her work and accused of ‘affiliation with a terrorist organisation’ and of ‘spreading false information’ “There is complex and compounded suffering but through this partnership established today between three institutions - the Palestinian Red Crescent and Our Children Society (Atfaluna) - we were able to establish the first shelter for people with disabilities This is what we have been able to achieve with our limited resources The UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory said it’s truly remarkable that some of the most vulnerable people here in Gaza - those with disabilities - now have somewhere safe to be Lot of more work is required for other people with disabilities so we’ll continue to move all that forward and help as much as we are able to help.” look we know that we have to work towards and that’s towards getting a restaurant again for Atfaluna and continue into the great work that your organization has done to integrate especially people who are deaf in the society.” Chairperson of the Board of trustees of the Hashemite Entrepreneur® and its related marks are registered trademarks of Entrepreneur Media LLC please talk to us about how Basma was conceptualized and how you came to be associated with the brand Basma was born from a very simple but powerful idea: orthodontics shouldn't be complicated or out of reach I saw an opportunity to digitize and streamline the way people access dental aligners in our region—offering a modern tech-enabled approach without compromising on medical quality What started as a vision to simplify access has grown into a platform that empowers top dentists to offer advanced orthodontic treatments across eight countries We don't operate through traditional clinics with branches Basma partners with carefully selected dental clinics in major cities These partners become extensions of our platform trained and equipped to deliver the full Basma experience we're active in over 12 cities across the GCC Although they've been around for a couple of decades access to them has been limited—why do you think this has been the case Access has been limited for a few reasons—high pricing and a lack of trained providers in emerging markets Aligners have traditionally been seen as a premium product available only in select clinics a network of trained partner clinics and local production to bring down the cost and reduce treatment times Take us through what a typical customer experience at Basma entails What are the steps involved in ensuring the end-user receives the right treatment We've reimagined the orthodontic journey from the ground up where the patient gets scanned and assessed by a Basma-trained dentist That scan is then reviewed by our in-house orthodontists who design a personalized treatment plan using advanced software the patient receives a 3D preview of their future smile and aligners are delivered in just under two weeks The patient follows the plan under the supervision of their dentist with the Basma team and tech supporting every step—from virtual check-ins to real-time chat support While traditional orthodontic treatments can take two to three years Basma aligner treatments begin to show results in as little as four months and take an average of just 10 months—making it a more efficient solution without compromising on care or outcomes how does the added feature of 3D previews offer Basma an edge how do you ensure customer safety (in terms of data security) within this option 3D previews in our BASMA Patient App are game-changers They give patients full visibility into their treatment before it even begins It's also incredibly motivating—patients get to see what they're working toward Add to it the agency to interact directly with their medical team from the comfort of their couch and handled in compliance with local and international privacy standards For those who may not be familiar with the benefits of aligners/invisible braces please talk to us about why they're so important not just from an orthodontic perspective but for overall health as well A healthy smile is more than just aesthetics—it's foundational to overall health Aligners help correct these problems gently and discreetly they fit seamlessly into adult lifestyles—no food restrictions It's a smart solution for people who care about their health but want flexibility and discretion And what are some of the differentiating factors the brand possesses that will ensure this vision is achieved We want Basma to be the go-to digital orthodontics platform across emerging markets—starting with the Middle East and Africa Our long-term vision is to make high-quality personalized orthodontics accessible to millions What sets us apart is our hybrid model—we're not just a tech company We're a platform that connects the best of both worlds and we work with trusted local dentists to deliver the treatment What have been some customer stories that have truly left you feeling proud of the work you do But one that stands out is a teenage girl from a rural area whose parents couldn't afford braces until they discovered Basma through one of our partner clinics Not only was she able to complete her treatment affordably but the transformation also boosted her confidence in a way that changed how she showed up in school and socially Another memorable case involved a bride-to-be who finished her treatment just in time for her wedding photos Seeing the joy in those before-and-after pictures reminds us that we're not just straightening teeth—we're helping people show up in the world with more confidence and pride We'll be in your inbox every morning Monday-Saturday with all the day’s top business news best advice and exclusive reporting from Entrepreneur Basma Majerbi, associate professor at the and sectors,” says Majerbi “The energy in the room was palpable throughout the day as we discussed many critical challenges of our time that can only be tackled through collaboration and partnerships I came back inspired and really looking forward to building on the momentum to advance many unique initiatives at UVic working closely with communities to accelerate the transition to a clean energy future.” As she continues to push the boundaries of sustainable finance and impact investing Majerbi’s leadership will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Canada’s clean energy transition. Yola yet they still hope for a return to their life in a region now in its fifteenth year of conflict Basma Mohammed’s world was turned upside down in 2014 when Boko Haram attacked her village in Pulka school and dream to become a pilot were torn away “I want to be a pilot,” she said with determination “There are people in emergency situations who need to move to safe places Basma cannot attend school; her parents are too overwhelmed with the daily struggle to meet the family’s basic needs “The world should know that the girls in IDP settlements deserve a good life,” she said This reality weighs heavily across the Malkohi settlement she now lives in more permanent housing within the Malkohi settlement the settlement does not have enough permanent shelters and clean water sources to support the nearly 200 households living there Many residents also struggle with limited access to healthcare and food and a lack of livelihood opportunities Salamatu and other women formed savings groups that provide a sense of community and financial support The groups enable women to save amounts as low as 200 naira (US$0.13) They share this pooled money to meet each other’s needs "Yesterday we shared money and sent someone to the market to buy things for us," Salamatu said But these efforts are not enough to help people overcome the poverty and instability that define their lives Some of us have skills but we need help to rebuild," Salamatu explained Musa Tela has lived in Malkohi for a decade Once a thriving farmer and businessman in Dubo Tella Musa had everything he needed to care for his family: a house But when Boko Haram attacked his community “I had about 50 bags of beans that I bought for sale Musa left the emergency shelter he’d lived in for seven years and moved to Malkohi He received two small houses for his large family “We are grateful for these permanent shelters,” said Musa who is also Secretary for the settlement’s IDP committee The Government and humanitarian organizations provide helpful relief People in the settlement still struggle to earn a livelihood to meet their requirements Musa and several other displaced men rent small parcels of farmland outside the settlement to grow food As Musa explained: “even if we leave this place we shall go elsewhere; there’s no safe place for us back home.” He added that they also need support to start businesses Salamatu’s daily struggles and Musa’s lost livelihood represent just some of the challenges of displaced people across Borno Adamawa and Yobe States in north-east Nigeria With support from Federal and State Government humanitarian organizations and the international community the OCHA-managed Nigeria Humanitarian Fund supported local non-governmental organization Grassroot Life Saving Outreach to provide essential health services One key recipient was the Malkohi Primary Health Centre which helps displaced families and host communities The International Organization for Migration received $750,000 from the OCHA-managed Central Emergency Response Fund to provide permanent shelters and essential items to more than 1,200 internally displaced people between September 2021 and December 2022 This year, the humanitarian community in north-east Nigeria is appealing for $910.2 million to provide urgent food This funding is vital to help displaced communities recover and rebuild their lives Join us in helping the people of north-east Nigeria Basma Adeem Medical Co. issued today the prospectus to float four million shares on the Nomu-Parallel Market The offered the bleary eye of a low-resolution satellite; what hides in a pixel.2 Beyond drone footage when Gaza is realized in images from the ground it has often been made abstract by its destruction; we are presented with an image of a lack where something once was and left to wonder and filmmakers have been tasked with creating indexical representations of Gaza to offset the violence of abstraction in Israeli-sanctioned imaging If we are to understand abstraction as a pillar of Israeli military strategy in the occupied Gaza Strip rendering the violence suffered by Palestinian people at their hands inconspicuous Palestinian resistance movements are obliged to retaliate by making real (for foreign parties) the effects of Israeli occupation and genocidal efforts through indexical image “the representative image is a ‘cruel image’” when it comes to representations of Palestinian abjection and pain “perpetuating the violence of war in its easy consumption by viewers.”3 To immortalize the image of the suffering Palestinian as the exemplary icon of the Gaza Strip is an abstraction of a different kind marking the severity of Gazan life as it is now and casting it in amber thus simultaneously solidifying this experience as inherent to the region and divorcing Gaza from the rest of the world death is not inherent to the Palestinian identity and to suggest as much through images would be a violence does the battleground of representation/abstraction leave contemporary Palestinian filmmakers Can abstract image-making function as a reparative position to imag(in)e Gazan past Deep Sleep emerges as a potential way out of this dichotomy Incorporating both abstract and figurative images from in and out of the Gaza Strip Deep Sleep realizes the latent political potential of traditional practices of “flicker film” while deepening the diversity of images of Palestine in the very indeterminacy of the images presented Al-Sharif comments on the didacticism of both abstract and representational images of Gaza and imagines a space beyond the binary granting an alternative entry-point to encounter the Palestinian landscape a radical act when didactic image-making appears as the only avenue for liberatory representation A landscape is still a landscape when viewed upside down Deep Sleep’s title comes from the process of its making; shooting between ruins in Athens attempting to film only while in a trance state Al-Sharif’s desired end to her self-induced hypnotic state was to successfully bilocate between the foregone civilizations of ancient Greece and Malta and the Gaza Strip of past Because each landscape is often indistinguishable from any other the indeterminacy of the three locations and the filmmaker’s bilocation melds the three together opening up a speculative space wherein one can imagine a Gaza discorrelated from the effects of the occupation the blending of location allows for a speculative future for Gaza even if the realization of such a future is unlikely I wanted to remove the specificity of Gaza and allowed other sites (Malta and Athens) to be a reflection of Gaza The three sites are heavy with ruins of ancient civilization but ultimately it is about surviving beyond the presence of history.4 Al-Sharif’s film will screen as part of the final program of Landscape Cinema: Poetics and Politics A scholar of Eastern European aesthetics and experimental film at Stanford University Levi’s series proposes a new aesthetic framework crossing time and geographical boundaries in its proposition The framework: an image of a landscape is a political one Under every image of a golf course lies a mass grave but this exclusion only underscores the strange absence of a human subject As Levi writes in “The Cinema of Cleansed Landscapes (On Image Politics after Yugoslavia),” “emptiness or absence function in these films not merely as traces of distinct authorial styles; they also bespeak a demand to the viewer to participate: to fill in these films’ gaps to imagine what is lacking in their strategically emptied and Born in Kuwait to Palestinian refugees and growing up between Kuwait al-Sharif’s relationship to Gaza has always been precarious; although she had relatives living in Gaza throughout her childhood and visited every year the volatile political landscape requires a certain mental gymnastics a fixed relationship to any landscape felt impossible—that summer al-Sharif had packed all of her belongings into a storage unit Reimagining Gaza through the mediation of other lands reads as a reparative move in this light as a way to protect oneself and one’s memory against the unpredictable present and future Levi underwent repetitive syntonic therapy for a lazy eye; for the uninitiated such therapy requires the patient to follow the strange dark spot of the after-image of strobing lights al-Sharif uses the front tails of Super 8 film to strobe the viewer into a collective dream of a place we may not ever get to visit Dreams and movies have always been tied together if only because of their respective once-removedness from ordinary life a film can be a dream of the thing you don’t remember as a portal that makes the “real world” recede something like a horse galloping through the olive trees Rebecca Turner is a writer based in San Francisco, studying contemporary film and media at Stanford University. Excellence in 1995 FAO’s work in the Near East and North Africa Eliminating food insecurity and malnutrition are persistent challenges in the Near East and North Africa The structural dependence of its countries on food imports make the region highly vulnerable to shocks increasing the inability of entire communities to feed themselves Recent conflicts and civil instability in many countries of the region have also compounded the situation food insecurity and malnutrition are widespread and require comprehensive and urgent intervention FAO is helping governments face these challenges by improving the capacity of countries to collect produce and analyze data for policy formulation This is done by strengthening their commitment and accountability and by coordinating efforts for joint action FAO also provides direct support to improve the livelihoods of millions of small farmers and rural communities especially in countries undergoing conflict where the Organization help farmers and their families recover from crises Princess Basma bint Ali to speak at World Forestry Congress In one of her first official engagements as FAO Goodwill Ambassador, Princess Basma bint Ali is utmost care and empathy are the ways Dr Basma chooses to support cancer patients at FV “Excellent expertise, a distinctive personality, dedication, and exceptional communication skills,” are the words colleagues use to describe Dr Basma M’Barek the head of Hy Vong Cancer Care Centre at FV Hospital Dr Basma has dedicated almost 25 years to oncology care including 18 years working in France and six years in Vietnam and remains passionately committed to her profession She speaks with fervour about her specialty and the promising prospects of cancer treatments Dr Basma chose Vietnam to open a new chapter in her career Dr Basma did not hesitate to pursue oncology despite the limitations in treatment methods and medical technology at the time a cancer diagnosis was considered a death sentence and choosing such a challenging specialty as a medical student might have seemed untimely But I thought differently; I believed that this is a field where specialising in oncology offers the opportunity to save many lives and drive progress,” Dr Basma says Dr Basma embarked on her journey into the oncology specialty with a passionate heart filled with energy and a desire to contribute to medical science and developing in advanced medical environments in Europe and cancer treatment medicines available have progressed remarkably After 18 years of working in major hospitals in France and achieving many career advancements who was then heading the oncology unit of a French hospital began thinking about how to contribute and help cancer patients even more “I believe the impact a doctor can make in a developing country is more significant and can help more people I am convinced that supporting and spreading medical knowledge and achievements more widely is a sustainable way to develop and provide effective treatment opportunities for patients,” Dr Basma expressed the French doctor began searching for the right environment to start the next chapter of her career the opportunity came to her just as she had envisioned: in a developing country with many gaps in medical treatment a hospital eager to bring in the latest scientific advancements and located in a sunny city humid weather where Dr Basma was working at the time “I believe the impact a doctor can make in a developing country is more significant and can help more people.” “The project at FV was very similar to a project I had previously worked on I felt as if everything was ‘designed’ for me to come here I accepted the next challenge,” Dr Basma recalls Arriving in Vietnam with nearly two decades of rich experience and extensive knowledge from leading hospitals in France and local culture presented many pressures and surprises for the young head of department Recalling her first impressions of working with Dr Basma an Oncology Social Worker at Hy Vong Cancer Care Centre at FV Hospital the communication styles and choices of the patients’ families surprised her because they almost made all the decisions for the patient Dr Basma felt this was not appropriate and discussed it with us to find the best solution to change this cultural norm Nearly all her thoughts are focused on the patients and how to ensure they receive treatment in the best possible context.” Dr Basma also observed that Vietnamese people tend to express their emotions discreetly or not at all This reaction makes it difficult for doctors to support Suppressing emotions sometimes leads patients to psychological stress Patients need to release their emotions rather than suppress them They need timely assistance instead of enduring alone This is something I always ponder and hope patients understand that they can share their feelings and rely on help from everyone around them Accompanying patients and striving to go the distance with them what puts cancer patients in difficult psychological situations when receiving information about their illness is their lack of understanding about current medical advancements and still viewing cancer as a “death sentence.” “The project at FV was exactly like a project I had previously worked on Dr Basma M’Barek – Head of Hy Vong Cancer Care Centre This reality is also one of the reasons why Dr Basma chose to stay with FV Hy Vong Cancer Care Centre is constantly updated with the latest medical advances and FV invests heavily in technology and scientific tools Dr Basma believes that when enough trust is built for patients in terms of treatment capabilities and the best medical services patients will have more hope that they can be successfully beat their cancer the team and I always accompany the patients at every stage of their physical and psychological journey Even with patients who come here with only a few percent chance of success never giving up,” emphasised the French doctor Dr Basma also emphasises the importance of cancer screening She is concerned that cancer screening in Vietnam is still not given enough attention Cancer patients often come to the hospital when the disease has progressed to advanced stages with severe symptoms greatly affecting the chances of treatment “Up to 90 per cent of cancer cases can be cured if detected in the early stages it’s heartbreaking to see patients coming here at a stage where they only have a 20 per cent chance of recovery,” Dr Basma added Her research efforts empower Dr Basma to make greater contributions to her field Dr Basma made great gains and earned the trust of the medical community there when embarking on a new journey in Vietnam she had to essentially start from the most basic steps to understand and gain trust within the local medical community but with her extensive experience and excellent professional capabilities Dr Basma’s journey to connect with her peers was considerably shortened Continuously applying advanced treatment techniques and participating in seminars and events to sharing new achievements gave Dr Basma and her colleagues opportunities to share knowledge and experiences with each other As one of the leading cancer treatment hubs in Vietnam Hy Vong Cancer Care Centre has also held seminars to share research advances in cancer care with both the domestic and international medical communities The key factor connecting the medical community in Vietnam and leading international physicians None other than the young head of department at FV “FV is truly an international hospital and incorporate many advanced techniques developed around the world and apply them to treat Vietnamese patients Having succeeded at Hy Vong Cancer Care Centre we also aim to support and assist the medical community in Vietnam in accessing this knowledge “If they cannot yet invest in scientific and technical fields they can grasp the knowledge and conduct research for future application bringing the greatest benefit to patients,” Dr Basma enthusiastically remarked “The modern equipment and advanced techniques at FV are on par with the advancements of leading medical institutions in Europe or the United States” Hy Vong Cancer Care Centre at FV Hospital has invested in and gradually implemented the most advanced techniques in radiation therapy Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) and Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) “Always treat patients as if they were your own family.” Describing her “enthusiastic and meticulous” mentor and department head noted: “Working with her always entails a subtle pressure but because she is incredibly productive and dedicated This pressure serves as a significant motivation for me to improve and excel in my work.” Dr Ha Thu remarks that she has learned a great deal from Dr Basma inclusive approach to issues enables doctors to see more possibilities and provide more comprehensive support and explanations to patients “Even with patients who come here with only a few percent chance of success we still go all out with them until the end “One of Dr Basma’s most impressive work philosophies is ‘Always treat patients as if they were your own family.’ She knows exactly what needs to be done and Dr Basma’s dedication to patients is immense.” Dr Ha Thu added Dr Basma serves as the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board (MAB) for the term 2023-2025 at FV Hospital Most members of the board have placed their trust in the French head of department due to her professional excellence research achievements and her sharpness and intelligence in communication An interview with Dr Basma may only last an hour—both a brief and lengthy period considering her busy schedule—but it’s enough time for her to share her professional stories and concerns Though she may not delve deeply into future plans Dr Basma’s insights partially reveal the surfaces or crumbing a table seems shameful in your eyes I feel that hospitality is impossible to teach; it is either born within you or it isn’t The passion I had for this profession was driven by the eagerness to make every customer happy I used to imagine that I was always serving my mom and that I always had to impress her and keep her happy When you start understanding that you are delivering an experience making a mark with every dish that lands on every table with every guest that sets foot in your restaurant This industry is simply an opportunity to always meet new people I started my career as a banquet waiter at a very young age and my first college training was as a room server I would have wished to remain in those positions and on that floor forever the fun and the memories are all in the corridors the cafeterias and the back-of-house areas of those properties giving with passion and kindness is often seen and appreciated People might forget what they ate or what you spoke to them about during their visits but they will never forget the experience you gave them or how you made them feel It is not just your guests; it can be your colleagues or anyone else in the workplace you encounter a full range of emotions and activate all your senses within a single space Emotional characters are often the most successful in this industry radiating positivity wherever they go and ensuring they make memories too consumers are often captivated by the glamour of things beyond just food and service Operators need to carry out multiple activations within a single space all of which must be carefully planned and organised Effective marketing will validate all the beliefs held from day one Marketing without a clear strategy is akin to pouring water into a shot glass while standing on a high chair and the music and art surrounding the guests are all equally important aspects nowadays The best stories to tell within our organisation are those of internal success their well-being and their skills can be the most beneficial thing you do for the business provided it is done at the right time with the right associates All of these aspects are sufficient presented in a luxuriously cushioned reading room a sexual affair produces the protagonist Loza; she is travelling to the funeral of her biological father alSharif carefully tracks tensions within interpersonal relationships and includes virtuosic descriptions of place and character as well as unexpected elements of fantasy and erotica It’s a deeply sensuous telling of one family line’s experience of the 20th and 21st centuries in Palestine Loza travels back in time through 1935 Palestine While historical moments are alluded to in the story they are not named or identified in a conventional way Routine consumption of the setting or time period is thus frustrated creating the conditions for a renewed encounter with Palestinian history that prioritises imagination of the lives and histories that might have been lost during times of violent displacement The other galleries’ works act as context for this first reading room Photographic prints of historically hard-to-place Pura, the smart home fragrance company that marries premium fragrance with innovative technology, recently launched its inaugural impact collection with K Farmer Dutjahn Foundation (KFDF) and Dutjahn Sandalwood Oils (DSO) The Pura x Dutjahn partnership began with a clear purpose: to source a sacred ingredient directly from its origin while honoring the land and the people who’ve cared for it Our goal wasn’t simply to find sandalwood — it was to find a community and an ingredient that embody exceptional land stewardship After careful research and over three years of development luxurious ingredient while supporting a regenerative supply chain that invests in Indigenous-led education an Indigenous tribe from the vast Western Australian desert Martu are one of the oldest living cultures in the world they have unparalleled ecological knowledge making them the traditional custodians of the land Their approach to sandalwood harvesting isn’t driven by market demand but by a deep respect for seasonal rhythms Their work adapts to the environment—whether it’s “sorry time,” when mourning pauses activities or the harsh desert conditions that make travel and communication difficult a deliberate rhythm shaped by millennia of experience Martu’s ecological knowledge isn’t documented in baseline reports and practiced with rigor and respect for the changing needs of the ecosystems True partnership means unlearning the typical approach It means standing beside—not in front—and recognizing that the wisdom and leadership we need already exist within these communities as I spoke with Chairman Clinton Farmer and the KFDF team about our focus for this piece I learned that Clinton’s truck had broken down (again) leaving him to “limp” back to town from the desert at low speeds for hours and hours and brings real financial and emotional strain These barriers are relentless and persistent part of the harsh reality Clinton and his community face daily we need to truly partner with communities — equipping them with the resources to operate sustainably and protect the very land they love and care for All while they endeavor to share these incredible sacred ingredients with the world and build an economic engine for their people The future we need will not be built in quarterly cycles To learn more about the partnership and fragrances, visit Pura x Dutjahn Christine Kesteloo Sure, pinworms are extremely contagious and here's why–their eggs are practically microscopic carried under the fingernails and stick to everything Basically anything an infected person touches now likely has eggs on it you now have undetectable eggs on your fingers that can end up in your mouth for the parasite to start its life cycle in your small intestine and rectum It's certainly a vision to behold in your minds eye but even given their contagion level are they really so contagious that you need a monthly dewormer File:Hookworms.JPG - Wikipediaen.m.wikipedia.org But the post sparked lots of concerned replies with one person writing this is my most unreasonable phobia." Nighttime scratching of an itchy anus due to the worms coming out while you're sleeping to lay their eggs around your...uh...butthole Chances are if you're not consistently resisting the urge to get up from your bed and scoot your bottom across the carpet in your bedroom Other parasites have more alarming symptoms that would certainly have the average person seeking medical attention in a developed country But in the United States, pinworms are the most common intestinal parasite as parasites like ascaris are spread through soil contaminated with human feces Almost all other intestinal parasites are contracted by either touching soil contaminated with eggs and touching your mouth with an unwashed hand or in the case of hookworms walking barefoot on soil contaminated with hookworm larvae the first two are contracted by eating undercooked meats of animals infected with the parasite while flukes are contracted by drinking contaminated water or eating infected fish According to the World Health Organization (WHO) "Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are among the most common infections worldwide with an estimated 1.5 billion infected people or 24% of the world’s population These infections affect the poorest and most deprived communities with poor access to clean water sanitation and hygiene in tropical and subtropical areas with the highest prevalence reported from sub-Saharan Africa This means the likelihood of parasites running rampant in the intestines of everyday Americans is pretty slim outside of the occasional pinworms a child might bring home even that doesn't necessarily require an urgent visit to the doctor It's more of an annoyance than anything else due to the itching as the medication needed is sold over the counter at your local pharmacy for around $10 Even the testing for pinworms doesn't involve anything super scientific that you'd need to spend hundreds of dollars on a lab test. According to the CDC people worried that they may have the pesky parasite can simply put a strip of scotch tape near their bum hole first thing in the morning The eggs will appear on the tape though they're small and will likely need to be seen with a microscope do you need to have a family deworming night every few months though any concerns about possibly having a parasite should be discussed with your primary care doctor "There is just so much pressure on social media to be perfect."
