Things could have been very different though me coming from a "red" kibbutz in the Bet She'an valley "Maoz Haim" I brought her over to the yellow side and now she's a passionate home fan) As a kid and a teenager I was always rowing against the stream and I fell in love with the attractive and total football of Viki Peretz The great and late skipper Avi Cohen became an idol and a model for me and it was just my luck to have witnessed one of his great moments when he blasted into Hapoel's Arye Bejerano's net and got himself an absolutely amazing contract with the English champions and then one of Europe's greatest clubs And because of him I also became a passionate Liverpool fan which unfortunately has given me a lot of sleepless nights in recent years Down the years my love for Yellow has only got stronger I had some great times with later national coaches Avraham Grant and Dror Kashtan's with his amazing double And of course it was my luck to see striker Avi Nimni one of the great symbols and great winners that grew up at the club In the last three years I've moved from the radio in the north to broadcasting the morning Israel programme from Radio Tel Aviv with my partner Domingo and I have a feeling I've brought with me all the luck and energy that have been missing in recent years I'm no mystic but I'm a firm believer in the saying "Faith will lead the way" And in the last two years the club has been operating so professionally undergoing a managerial and organisational revolution and is now reaping the benefits that are leading us to new and glorious vistas here at home and (keep your fingers crossed) in Europe too I've never hidden my love for this club where thank goodness it's given me something good to talk about in recent months Not even when the scouts chose me and Domingo for the programme "Goalstar" on Hot television Remember that unforgettable episode when I kicked Hapoel Tel Aviv's veteran defender Walid Badir in the shin (in fun of course) or when I gave the corner flag at Hapoel Tel Aviv's Wolfson training camp a "special" watering because of my early morning programme I don't get to every match as I'd like to the goal difference has been 12-2 to the Yellows Shaika Levi and Israel Poliakov used to say One more thing my Yellow Brothers and Sisters The attendance this year at Bloomfield has proven beyond any possible doubt that we not only have the best organization and management but also that the fans are returning in droves And the latest campaign about giving racists the boot that is simply the most impressive thing they've done in years Harel Slutsky is a radio broadcaster at Radio Tel Aviv and a star in the television programme "Goalstar" broadcast on HOT. Israeli city of Beit She’an (“House of Tranquility”) is a not-to-be-missed itinerary item for any tour of Israel – especially during the winter months as during the summer this part of Israel is one of the hottest places on the planet Thanks to the Roman penchant for grand building projects, you can easily spend a few hours exploring the vast Beit She’an national archeological park with restored ruins of the 7,000-seat Roman theater colonnaded streets and gladiator amphitheater this oval structure was used only for blood sports to keep the Roman troops entertained while they were stationed in Beit She’an during the Second Temple Period,” says licensed tour guide Moshe Friedman Beit She’an is a quiet provincial municipality of 17,000 it attracted perhaps 40,000 residents due to its strategic fertile and picturesque location at the crossroads of the Jordan and Jezreel valleys Friedman says Beit She’an has been continuously inhabited since the Egyptian period “Beit She’an sits on ‘Kings Way,’ a natural roadway from Egypt to Damascus so it was important during the Crusader period as a connection point between the culture center of Egypt and the mercantile center in Damascus,” he says the Philistines hung King Saul’s body on a wall after the biblical battle on nearby Mount Gilboa (see below) And this is where a monumental act of arson – probably ordered by the king of Assyria in 732 BCE – destroyed the city that was strategic to the kingdoms of David and Solomon Beit She’an expanded southward and reached its peak of greatness in the fifth century CE It was the capital of a group of 10 city-states and even minted its own coins the Jews of Beit She’an didn’t side with the rest of the country against the Romans,” Friedman tells ISRAEL21c these local Jews were murdered by their pagan neighbors perhaps with the complicity of the Roman authorities All of this comes alive in the “Beit She’an Nights” sound-and-light show produced by Israel’s renowned Disk-In Pro, the same company behind the Olympic Experience Museum in Tel Aviv Thursdays and Saturdays; call 972-4-648-1122 Tour guide Shalom Pollack says Beit She’an National Park is “a big wow for anyone above seven or eight years old.” Bear in mind that the Beit She’an Valley is consistently cited as one of the hottest places on earth But if you cannot schedule your visit for the cooler winter months plan on taking an air-conditioned break at a nearby mall with stores and restaurants it’s worthwhile to explore nearby Mount Gilboa with its 11 peaks and lots of picnic spots “I like to take people to the top of Mount Gilboa,” Pollack tells ISRAEL21c “The view there is amazing — you can see the whole Beit She’an Valley and Jezreel Valley and take a short hike on the mountain paths where King Saul and his son Jonathan died in the biblical battle with the Philistines.” In Kibbutz Heftziba, at the foot of the northern slopes of Gilboa, Beit Alfa Synagogue National Park houses Israel’s best-preserved synagogue mosaic floor from the sixth century an Ottoman fort and several basalt stone houses from the period of Arab conquest of Beit She’an are all open to tourists The Belvoir (or Kochav HaYarden — Star of the Jordan) National Park is dominated by a Crusader castle perched high above the Jordan valley about nine miles uphill from the Beit She’an Valley Just north is a feeding station set up to strengthen Israel’s Griffon vulture population The Beit She’an Valley houses several kibbutzim that offer attractions of their own Kibbutz Nir David operates the popular nature and wildlife sites Sachne-Gan Hashlosha and Gan Garoo Sachne has natural pools fed by hot springs and a stream with mini waterfalls and the picnic area is great for families especially in summertime,” says Pollack lets visitors feed and pet the free-roaming kangaroos and cockatoos Kibbutz Nir David was one of 52 tower-and-stockade settlements built by Zionist immigrants during the British Mandate in the late 1930s to early 1940s and a museum on the grounds is devoted to this historical era “This gives you a feeling of what it was like to be a pioneer in the valley,” says Pollack He recommends the Bio-Tour at Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu, where an industry called Bio-Bee Biological Systems sells specially bred fruit flies, bees, and other insects, as well as nesting owls to farms in 30 countries as natural pest control Overnight accommodations are available at Kibbutz Nir David, Kibbutz Tirat Zvi and Kibbutz Shluchim, as well the Beit She’an Guest House  and Ma’ayan Harod Guest House at the foot 200-ton rotor is installed on a generating unit at the Kokhav Hayarden pumped storage power plant in Bet She'an The Chinese-built 344-MW Kokhav Hayarden pumped storage hydropower plant is expected to be operational in early 2023 which will help reinforce the grid stability in Israel May 26 (Xinhua) -- A large-scale pumped storage power plant in northeastern Israel reached the final stage of construction on Wednesday was smoothly installed on a generating unit The 344-MW Kokhav Hayarden pumped storage hydropower plant located near the city of Beit She'an and some 120 km away from Tel Aviv is expected to be operational in early 2023 Chinese workers stand near the 200-ton rotor installed on a generating unit at the Kokhav Hayarden pumped storage power plant in Bet She'an The project is built to become the largest pumped storage power plant in Israel and it is also the lowest pumped storage power plant in the world as its powerhouse lies 275 meters below sea level according to building contractor Power Construction Corporation of China (PCCC) Featuring two reservoirs at different heights the hydropower plant can operate at a water head of 500 meters uses the off-peak power to pump water to its upper reservoir and release the water to the lower one whenever it needs to generate electricity to help relieve peak demand on the grid Workers are installing a 200-ton rotor on a generating unit at the Kokhav Hayarden pumped storage power plant in Bet She'an it pumps water from the lower reservoir to the upper and stores it and generates electricity with gravitational energy when needed," PCCC project manager Han Hongwei told Xinhua As a widely-recognized green and cost-effective method to store electric power the pump storage plant will help Israel reinforce grid stability once put into use Chinese workers are seen at the construction site about 275 meters below the sea level at the Kokhav Hayarden pumped storage power plant in Bet She'an A Greek inscription dedicated to “Christ born of Mary” was discovered during Israel Antiquities Authority excavations in the village of et-Taiyiba in the Jezreel Valley the inscription comes from the frame of an entrance door of what appears to be a church dating from the Byzantine period (late fifth century CE) According to Leah Di-Segni, a researcher at the Institute of Archaeology of Hebrew University of Jerusalem, this dedicatory inscription would have been engraved while casting the foundations of the church. The full text she deciphered reads, “Christ born of Mary. This work of the most God-fearing and pious bishop [Theodo]sius and the miserable Th[omas] was built from the foundation … . Whoever enters should pray for them.” According to Di-Segni, the formula “Christ born of Mary” was intended to protect church-goers from the evil eye and was commonly used at the beginning of inscriptions and documents of the time. “The inscription greets those who enter and blesses them,” Di-Segni said. Theodosius, whom the text refers to as the building’s founder, was one of the first Christian bishops. He served as the regional archbishop – the supreme religious authority of the metropolis of Bet She’an, to which et-Taiyiba belonged. “This is the first evidence of the Byzantine church’s existence in the village of et-Taiyiba and it adds to other finds attesting to the activities of Christians who lived in the region,” said Walid Atrash of the Israel Antiquities Authority. “Remains of a church from the Crusader period were previously uncovered at the site, and a monastery discovered more recently by Nurit Feig of the Israel Antiquities Authority and Dr Moti Aviam of Kinneret College in Kfar Kama is one of a series of monasteries that were under the jurisdiction of the Bet She’an religious metropolis.” The inscription was uncovered in an archeological excavation directed by Tzachi Lang and Kojan Haku of the Israel Antiquities Authority prior to the construction of a road inside the village. Participants in the dig included students, volunteers and workers from the local community. Audiences might be getting to know Cynthia Erivo amid the success of “Wicked,” but to seasoned fans, the British actress has been an acting powerhouse for decades. Nearly two months after the debut of the musical fantasy epic, based on the 1995 novel and long-running Broadway play, on January 8, 2025, Erivo celebrates her 38th birthday.  The milestone comes at a turning point in Erivo’s career, as she portrayed the great Aretha Franklin in “Genius: Aretha,” a trustworthy accomplice in the crime drama “Widows” and pioneering Underground Railroad abolitionist Harriet Tubman in “Harriet.” Along the way, Erivo has had noteworthy spots in television and Broadway. To honor her remarkable ongoing career and manifest an Academy Award to complete her ‘EGOT’ status, here are eight notable Erivo performances. Nearly a decade after LaChanze’s origination of “The Color Purple” protagonist Celie on Broadway, Erivo took on the role during the show’s 2015 revival on the Great White Way. Starring opposite Jennifer Hudson as Shug Avery and Danielle Brooks as Sofia–the latter who’d return in the 2023 film adaptation–“The Color Purple” won fans over, earning her a Tony in 2016 for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. Acting alongside film, television and theater great Viola Davis is no easy feat, but in 2018 heist thriller “Widows,” Erivo made it look natural. In the film, Erivo played Belle, a trusted babysitter and ally to Davis’ Veronica Rawlings, who leads a band of women looking to avenge their murdered spouses. Based on the 2018 novel of the same name, one-season 2020 thriller crime drama “The Outsider” showed a vulnerable side of Erivo as private detective Holly Gibney. Although reserved, Gibney’s heightened perception makes her an essential part of a local murder case. Utilizing her strong singing skills, Erivo brought a songbird twist to the legacy of Harriet Tubman in her 2019 historical drama biopic. While closely portraying Tubman’s bravery in the face of American slavery, the film recounts Tubman’s life and fellowship with her abolitionist comrades.  Although controversial due to Erivo being a British performer, the actress brought her best Aretha Franklin chops to biography anthology miniseries “Genius: Aretha.” The show centers Franklin throughout the highs and lows of her career, including her foundational albums “Lady Soul” and “Young, Gifted and Black.” Erivo tackles trauma and embarks on a friendship with a person of another culture as Liberian woman Jacqueline Kamara in 2023 drama “Drift.” Opposite Alia Shawkat as American tour guide Calie tries to mend herself after war devastation impacts her family. A film companion to former British crime thriller series “Luther,” in “The Fallen Sun,” Erivo’s Odette Raine first tries to arrest Idris Elba’s Luther, before partnering with him to take down a serial killer millionaire. Raine shakes up “The Fallen Sun” with her resilience and take-charge attitude. Alongside actress-singer Ariana Grande’s Galinda Upland, Erivo steals the screen as co-protagonist Elphaba Thropp, a misunderstood and green-skinned woman. While Upland and Thropp begin a friendship, outside discrimination and government corruption threaten to tear them apart. The story will be continued in the second and final “Wicked” installment, which releases this November. The supremacist organization Lehava published a video on its website yesterday showing two former Palmach fighters from the Hagana boasting about how they castrated Arabs upon orders from David Ben-Gurion himself It’s an old clip taken from a documentary made in 2010 called “Nevelot” (bastards). The movie tells about the lives of two men, Meir Lavetovsky and Yitzhak Weinstein, who were the inspiration for a TV show that went by the same name and also based on a book by Yoram Kaniuk I did not see either the movie nor the documentary I could not find much information about the two but a bit of googling shows Meir lost a grandson in a terror attack He later died after he was stabbed in broad daylight by a mental patient who had been released from hospital chose to post a clip that serves their disgusting agenda The ultra right-wing site Hakol Hayehudi notes today that this was not the only case, and tells a detailed story of a “famous” castration story that took place in the Bet She’an area [Heb] as an “eye for an eye” punishment that would also provoke less anger among the Arabs Our team has been devastated by the horrific events of this latest war The world is reeling from Israel’s unprecedented onslaught on Gaza inflicting mass devastation and death upon besieged Palestinians as well as the atrocious attack and kidnappings by Hamas in Israel on October 7 Our hearts are with all the people and communities facing this violence We are in an extraordinarily dangerous era in Israel-Palestine The bloodshed has reached extreme levels of brutality and threatens to engulf the entire region are seizing the opportunity to intensify their attacks on Palestinians The most far-right government in Israel’s history is ramping up its policing of dissent using the cover of war to silence Palestinian citizens and left-wing Jews who object to its policies one that +972 has spent the past 14 years covering: Israeli society’s growing racism and militarism We are well positioned to cover this perilous moment – but we need your help to do it This terrible period will challenge the humanity of all of those working for a better future in this land Palestinians and Israelis are already organizing and strategizing to put up the fight of their lives Can we count on your support +972 Magazine is a leading media voice of this movement a desperately needed platform where Palestinian and Israeli journalists and thinkers can report on and analyze what is happening In the hours of the night between June 29 and 30, a small group of Israelis dressed in black shirts, one of them bearing the infamous “Punisher” insignia — a skull symbol that has become appropriated by American far-right movements — attacked a group of young people camping near the Asi River in northern Israel The men in black were reportedly either from or sent by the neighboring Kibbutz Nir David to kick out the campers who are residents of the nearby city of Beit She’an just a few miles away the Asi River has become a symbol of the ongoing inequality and discrimination their families face in Israel when a group of young women and men from Beit She’an began demanding the right to access the river a natural gem whose translucent green water runs straight through Nir David As is customary of kibbutzim across Israel Nir David is a “gated community” whose fences block off access to the river for non-kibbutz residents The protests intensified in the summer of 2020 when the activists entered the kibbutz grounds marched on roads that are defined by the state as public areas the kibbutzniks claimed that the Beit She’an residents were trespassing in their homes; that allowing free passage to the river would cause disturbances to the local residents; and that permitting strangers to walk around the kibbutz homes many of which are situated near the banks of the river An Israeli wearing the ‘Punisher’ insignia during an attack on campers in Kibbutz Nir David: What began as an action of a few young people slowly grew into a movement of tens of thousands demanding open access to the natural resource the state backed the public’s right to access the river through the kibbutz the kibbutz announced in June that it would open up a small fenced-off area near the river designated for up to 250 non-residents at a time Yet despite what seemed like a gesture of goodwill the attack by the black shirted vigilantes took place precisely in this designated area While the kibbutz residents may have the right to live as a distinct community without disturbance they have exhibited a lordly and violent perception of this right which is resulting in the expropriation of a public space they want to continue denying access and freedom of movement for other Israeli citizens while ignoring the privilege that their identity as kibbutzniks grants them under Zionism Nir David’s false narrative of ownership — as if the residents built the river with their own hands and as if there was nothing in the area before they established the kibbutz — does not stand the test of reality on a story that the kibbutzniks like to tell themselves: that when Nir David was created in 1936 its founders arrived at a desolate place and built their community on their own In fact, the springs around the Asi were a central area for Palestinians before they were expelled by Zionist forces in 1948; Beit She’an itself was established on the ruins of the Palestinian city of Baysan Not only was the area inhabited by Palestinians but the nearby kibbutzim and the Zionist movement would eventually expel the native inhabitants to fulfill the fantasy of socialism and equality neither the Palestinians who were expelled nor the Mizrahim of Beit She’an are invited to take part in that fantasy These racist views have persevered in various ways as part of the weekly demonstrations outside the kibbutz I arrived at Nir David and stood in front of its yellow gates alongside dozens of other protesters demanding to be let in to reach the Asi River On the other side of the fence stood kibbutzniks looking frightened and concerned while a professional photographer hired by the kibbutz documented every protester who shouted or cursed we were finally able to enter the river from another gate various Nir David residents or people acting on their behalf photographed us expressing shock and alarm at our presence Disgusted by the people entering the river the hired photographer kept walking among us and taking photos which he would later edit together into a video on the Nir David website presenting the Beit She’an residents as animals with horrendous behaviors and who leave terrible messes behind them especially the one with the far-rightist Punisher patch as well as the racist portrayal of the Mizrahi activists should have provoked much greater shock among the Israeli public we have seen complete silence — including from the Zionist left for whom the Asi River presumably have been a major cause is that the Zionist left has never been a real partner in the struggle for redistributive justice nor for the demands of equality of Mizrahi Jews in Israel Instead of standing by the young women and men from Beit She’an the two Zionist left parties in the Knesset — Meretz and Labor — have been absent from the conversation many of their voters are members of kibbutzim and moshavim who still hold sway in the parties the attacks on the Beit She’an youth weaken Nir David’s claim that the residents only care about their security and that they fear harm to the kibbutz’s way of life the violence reveals that the issue at hand is not merely the kibbutz’s unwillingness to share space with people who are not like them the very idea of coexistence with these “outsiders” is an existential threat Omri Najad is a filmmaker and a political activist Can we count on your support ? +972 Magazine is a leading media voice of this movement, a desperately needed platform where Palestinian and Israeli journalists, activists, and thinkers can report on and analyze what is happening, guided by humanism, equality, and justice. How should we rank players such as four-time champion Cynthia Cooper who was 34 when the league began in 1997 and played only a few seasons who at 27 already has two titles and grew up with the WNBA as a goal Our ranking -- based strictly on the players' on-court performance -- includes past greats such as Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Swoopes Seven of those 10 active players are on teams that advanced to the 2021 WNBA playoffs This debate has been percolating all season among the WNBA fan base with a wide variety of credible and passionately held opinions Same goes for our panel of voters: ESPN/ABC analysts Rebecca Lobo and LaChina Robinson and play-by-play broadcaster Pam Ward; ESPN writers Katie Barnes Kevin Pelton and Mechelle Voepel; The Undefeated's Sean Hurd; and ESPN senior editor Melanie Jackson Earlier this month, the WNBA released its "The W25," as voted on by a panel of media and women's basketball pioneers/advocates (Each panelist submitted a 1-25 ranking; a first-place vote was awarded 25 points See more: Experts pick snubs, more But it is her consistent offensive greatness and her longevity that set her apart from her peers Others have been "better" over specific stretches or had stronger concentrations of dominance but what makes Taurasi special is that she has been one of the top performers for a long time Her most recent came 16 years later in 2020 Taurasi has the highest offensive win share total She tops the list with 60.49; in second is Sue Bird she has been the league's scoring champ multiple times but she has also been in the top five nine times I would pick Taurasi to take the shot 10 out of 10 times Diana Taurasi is the best offensive player in WNBA history (and No But Catchings is the most complete basketball player I have ever seen She remains the only player in the league to ever finish a season in the top 10 in points She led the Fever to the playoffs for 12 consecutive seasons; even without a lottery pick No one played harder than Catchings from the first whistle to the final buzzer and that was never more evident than in what turned out to be the final game of her WNBA career I called that last game -- an Indiana loss at home to Phoenix in the playoffs and the Fever were subbing out Catchings so she could get one last standing ovation She didn't need the spotlight or a final curtain call She played her butt off until the final buzzer Catchings was the consummate basketball player and professional She's one of the greatest scorers in the history of the league and brought the high-level pick-and-roll to the WNBA played the Houston Comets in the 1999 WNBA Finals our shootaround the morning before Game 1 at Madison Square Garden lasted forever: a couple hours of shootaround We were focusing on how to limit Houston's "C" Action (what the Comets called their wing pick-and-roll) It didn't matter how much we schemed for her score inside over bigger players and was a willing passer but her impact on professional women's basketball went beyond numbers She changed the way the women's game was played and what it meant to play her position came in with a refined game because she had been playing overseas for so many years what she'd learned and how she was able to read situations coming off the pick-and-roll or in a half-court offense Moore entered the league with unthinkable expectations one of the most prolific all-around players in the league and the star of a Minnesota Lynx franchise that won four of its six WNBA Finals appearances in a seven-year span To see such greatness in a player like Moore it remains difficult to accept the fact that we may never see her hit another clutch shot or make another run at a title A large portion of Moore's WNBA GOAT résumé could remain unwritten. Had Moore, who left the game in 2019 to focus on criminal justice reform added three more WNBA seasons in her prime and who knows how many accolades ending her college career without a trip to the Final Four she and Team USA took bronze at the World Championships but where was her basketball career headed Leslie was part of the Dream Team that won at the 1996 Atlanta Games and then was an original WNBA player with Sheryl Swoopes and Rebecca Lobo Assigned to her hometown team in Los Angeles a go-to scorer and as talented a center as women's hoops has seen Play for FREE for a chance to win up to $5,000! Make Your Picks there are some areas that can't be ignored: the defensive end of the floor championships and a player's impact when it comes to on-court history She played with tenacity and relentlessness on both ends of the floor and is the first player in WNBA and NBA history to win three MVP awards and three DPOY awards which speaks to her versatility on all 94 feet of the court she became the first to record a triple-double and was also the first to have won an NCAA championship and that trifecta in our sport is the mark of excellence in every aspect of the game: from defense to offense to marketing (she was the first to have a signature shoe) to building the league as one of its foundational pieces Lauren Jackson is one of the most transformative players to ever set foot in the WNBA Her run of dominance from 2003-2010 was incredible: two championships two first-team all-defensive honors and a Defensive Player of the Year Award she led the league in offensive win shares six times and was top 10 in defensive win shares five times Her career player efficiency rating is third all time and she holds the record for the top two seasons ever Sue Bird has played in and started more WNBA games than anyone in league history she has solidified herself as one of the greatest point guards to ever pick up a basketball She has been the starting point guard for all four of Seattle's championships and proving night in and night out why she deserves to be on this list She's an active legend with her own mythology (please see "Masked Bird") Parker's impact upon entering the league was immediate: she's the only player in WNBA history to sweep MVP and Rookie of the Year honors in the same season dominate at the rim or step back and hit from distance also becoming the first woman ever to grace the cover of an NBA 2K game Fowles also is the league's all-time leader in double-doubles and top five in win shares After establishing herself as a perennial frontcourt force with the Chicago Sky she turned an already great Minnesota team into a juggernaut becoming the top scorer and rebounder in the 2017 championship season A large part of Fowles' greatness stems from her longevity: She has demonstrated a level of consistent dominance throughout her career is a frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year and is in the MVP conversation What Fowles has done and continues to do on the court as the greatest center of her generation is incredible There's nobody in WNBA history quite like Delle Donne who combines the size of a post player (6-foot-5) with as accurate shooting as we've ever seen Delle Donne submitted the first 50-40-90 campaign in league history making 43% of her 3s and missing just three of 117 free throws She was rewarded with her second MVP as she led the Mystics to an elusive championship after a pair of finals losses in Washington and Chicago she has already put together one of the W's best careers Stewie is the one player on this list who could challenge Taurasi for No The only thing keeping Stewart from being higher on the list now is years of experience and defensively she impacts the game in a bigger way than ever appears in a stat sheet With her 7-foot-1 wingspan and the amount of space she can cover What's most impressive about Stewie is that she just takes over when she needs to The WNBA Finals last year in the bubble is a prime example She can play at a level that other people can't match Initially intending to play for Iowa when C Griffith had a daughter and took another scholastic route: through junior college and Division II After playing overseas and in the short-lived ABL she headed into the 1999 WNBA draft at age 29 still not well-known as a superstar Griffith took the league by storm in her first season winning MVP and Defensive Player of the Year honors A 6-foot-4 center who seemed to grab every rebound anywhere near her she averaged a double-double in each of her first three WNBA seasons and reached her pinnacle with the Monarchs by winning the 2005 WNBA championship and being named Finals MVP Augustus will cross you up and pull up on a dime and it is just so smooth you can't help but admire it but it's important to remember that she was part of those Minnesota teams that won four championships in seven years I think it's fair to say that if she hadn't been on the same team as Maya Moore during her prime Augustus' stats would have looked different She's one of those players who might be underappreciated by those who didn't grow up watching her or didn't play against her She was the player I least enjoyed going up against during my WNBA career I was never more sore after a game than after I played against Tina She was so difficult to defend on the perimeter strong force who rebounded and finished inside She could impose her will and her physicality on a game As good as Cynthia Cooper and Sheryl Swoopes were and as good as the other players around them were I don't know if Houston wins those championships if not for the toughness and winning mentality that Tina brought I played with the Comets for one season with Tina as my teammate There were days when Van Chancellor would say practice was over But if Tina's team lost the last scrimmage or drill practice didn't end until she said it ended and her team finished with a victory where she previously had starred at Ohio State Smith was allocated to the new Minnesota WNBA franchise in 1999 Smith embraced what Shock coach Bill Laimbeer asked of her: Take over at point guard and get in the best shape of your life Smith helped lead Detroit to three consecutive trips to the WNBA Finals and two WNBA titles She is the only one in the top 15 scorers in WNBA history who played in the ABL first she also had the physicality and mindset to be one of the league's best defenders guarding interior and perimeter players equally well At 6-foot-9 and possessing incredible athleticism and her presence on the court is both inspiring and intimidating where she's a disruptive shot blocker and one of the best rim protectors in league history and she has 19 of the 27 slams in WNBA history she became the first openly gay athlete to sign a contract with Nike and has since helped to elevate the LGBTQ+ community in sports A WNBA title is the only accolade missing on Charles' résumé she averaged a career-high and league-leading 23.4 PPG That ranks as the sixth-highest average in league history An incredible rebounder and one of the most dominating players inside Charles is impossible to box out or outmuscle on the glass She is one of those silent-but-deadly players who's constantly walking the walk of a professional athlete No WNBA player saw action in more wins than Whalen whose teams went 308-144 (.681) in her career Whalen helped the Sun to back-to-back Finals trips her first two seasons Whalen's greatest success came after a trade that sent her home to Minnesota She made four of her five All-Star appearances after the deal as the Lynx won four titles and reached the Finals two other times Whalen finished her 15-year career third in league history in assists and 19th in scoring Despite impressive play during the regular season -- she's eighth in career steals and 15th in career scoring producing six All-WNBA appearances -- McCoughtry has been at her best in the playoffs McCoughtry's dominant postseason runs led the Dream who went 4-30 as an expansion team before drafting her No to three Finals appearances in four years without another All-WNBA contributor as a teammate A championship would complete McCoughtry's résumé She played a key role in Las Vegas reaching the Finals last year She has been sidelined this season by an ACL tear Pondexter made an impact on the WNBA the moment she stepped on the court in 2006 putting together one of the best rookie seasons in league history She became the fastest player to reach 3,000 points 1,000 assists and 200 steals -- a record just broken this season fiercest competitors and dominant scorers in the league who delivered some incredible postseason runs Part of one of the WNBA's premier duos with Candace Parker Ogwumike managed to take top billing in 2016 when she won MVP thanks to the most efficient season in league history: 19.7 PPG on 66.5% shooting with a .737 true shooting percentage Ogwumike then capped the season with the winning putback in the final seconds of the winner-take-all Game 5 of the WNBA Finals to win the Sparks their first title since 2002 Ogwumike has made equal impact as president of the WNBA players association Becky was told she was too short or too slow But the 5-foot-6 former guard is the embodiment of perseverance and work ethic Undrafted in 1999 (that draft included an influx of veterans after the ABL folded) she had to work hard to diversify her game After starting just 19 games in her first five seasons she energized New York and then became the face of the franchise in San Antonio shot NBA-range 3-pointers and was unpredictable with the ball in her hands and always found a way to get her shot off Hammon went from barely being recruited to play Division I basketball and undrafted in the WNBA to what I believe will be a Hall of Fame career And she earned every damn thing she has accomplished you play to win games and to win championships and no one has won more titles than Brunson We often talk about what a luxury it is to have a big player at the 4 who is versatile enough to switch defensively onto perimeter players She was one of the first who could do that in a lock-down way But she impacted the game far beyond scoring Brunson often did the dirty work -- defense keeping balls alive -- seemingly without needing any of the glory or needing to get touches on offense She set screens to get Sylvia Fowles open looks She jumped out and made a guard's life hell She did things that allowed Seimone Augustus to conserve some defensive energy because she was so important offensively Brunson did all of those things so that her team could be successful She reminds me of Teresa Weatherspoon -- another player who belongs on this list -- in that Brunson probably could have been a more prolific scorer but that's not what her teams needed from her encouraging and impacting every possession Second only to Lauren Jackson among the best Australian players in WNBA history she was the top pick by Phoenix in the 2004 dispersal draft the same year future wife Taurasi was taken No but Phoenix wouldn't have won its three titles without her she was second on the team in scoring and rebounding and first in steals and field goal percentage Injury limited her to 14 regular-season games in 2009 but she was the Mercury's super-sub off the bench in the playoffs 4.9 assists and 1.8 steals in the playoffs Actress and singer Coco Jones is Hollywood’s next big star the 24-year-old rose to prominence after starring in the Disney Channel film Her mother, Eileen, her de facto coach, taskmaster, and wingman, suggested that she talk to a sports psychologist. Shiffrin had a couple of consultations, via Skype. “It didn’t feel like I was seeing a shrink,” she said. “It was a reminder that sometimes it’s better to be oblivious, but I’m not oblivious anymore, so how do I handle that?” I first heard of Shiffrin the winter of her first World Cup race. Ski-racing people spoke of her with the same astonishment that greeted the kid-phenom incarnations of Wayne Gretzky and Tiger Woods. Once she hit the tour, I tuned in when I could, eager to see a manifestation of genius. What I saw was a skier who looked flawless and smooth but not revolutionary or enthralling. She was so good at going fast that she didn’t look fast. Technique disguised athleticism. “I thought I would wander around, vaguely forgetting what I was just doing, until the Presidency is over.”Copy link to cartoonCopy link to cartoonLink copied Shiffrin was staying with her physiotherapist, Lyndsay Young, and Young’s husband, Chris, in their condo, and checking in for daily torture sessions at the Center of Excellence, under the lash of her coach, Jeff Lackie. (Young and Lackie travel with her on tour and for much of the off-season.) June is the busiest time of year at the C.O.E. On the first morning I visited, its vast gym, girded with giant photos of past American medallists (there has been more excellence, through the decades, than one might recall or assume), slowly filled with snow-sliders of many disciplines and body types—variations on freakishly fit. When I asked Shiffrin to identify the biggest beast in the place, she pointed to Steven Nyman, a veteran American downhiller, and then said, “Or me.” Shiffrin is lean, of medium height, with broad shoulders and, like everyone there, powerful legs. She had on black shorts and a purple tank top. You could see traces of boot-bang bruises on her shins. She began by warming up for ten minutes on a stationary bike and then doing some stretching. Eminem on the speakers, trash talk on the mats. She said that the day before had been a rough one—lifting weights, jumping up stairs. Young said, “When Mika got home last night, she said, ‘Whoever invented stairs is the biggest asshole.’ ” “Today is more anaerobic,” Lackie said. “You’ll have to perform consecutive days on tour, so we’re training for that.” “Hey, pal—this isn’t the quiet car.”Copy link to cartoonCopy link to cartoonLink copied She rested for two minutes, and then did the circuit again. After the second go-round, she collapsed to the ground and crawled, like a parched man in a desert cartoon. “This is not the most flattering workout,” Lackie observed. By the end of the third circuit, as she crawled along the mat, leaving a trail of sweat, I had to look away. And this was a recovery day. After a couple of minutes spent cooling down on the stationary bike, she could speak. “I’ve never puked,” she said. “I’ve come close. I’d pass out before I’d puke. We have a grading scale that I fill out for every workout. Ten is dying or passing out. I rate nine fairly often. That may have been a nine, maybe.” Her pulse had topped out at a hundred and sixty-six beats per minute. She’s never seen it above a hundred and eighty-five. Her resting heart rate is forty b.p.m. Rap music had given way to hair metal. Shiffrin put in an hour of balance work. Toward the end, she walked back and forth on a slack line and picked up cones, which she put on her head or threw at Lackie. “Motivation comes from within,” she said. Copy link to cartoonCopy link to cartoonLink copied “So she kept skiing with us,” Jeff said. “That became Eileen’s job.” “We always said, ‘If we’re going to do it, let’s do it right,’ ” Jeff told me. When Mikaela was eight, the family moved back East, to a house in rural New Hampshire. Jeff had got a job at Dartmouth Hospital, but the kite-in-the-headwind principle factored in, too. “We thought, Maybe we have something special here,” Jeff said. “We need to see if the kids love skiing in conditions where it’s pretty easy to hate it.” Mikaela arrived at Burke in December, 2009, as a freshman. One of her roommates was a racer from Connecticut called Bug Pech, the niece of the Olympian Chip Knight. (New England skiing, like medieval Scotland, can seem to be dominated by a handful of hardy clans: the Cochrans, the Shaws, the Knights.) “We were inseparable,” Pech said recently. “Piglet and Pooh Bear. She’s Piglet. She was shy, quirky. I was lost in la-la land.” Eileen had a condo a few minutes from the Burke campus, but she spent most of her time on the ski hill with Mikaela or in Mikaela’s triplex. “She was very much a presence,” Pech said. “They’d constantly go over video in our room, watching winning World Cup runs every night before bed. Eileen has an amazing eye for it.” “I just wanted Taylor and Mikaela to make perfect turns,” Eileen said Jeff Shiffrin said, “One of the things I learned from the Austrians is: every turn you make, do it right. Don’t get lazy, don’t goof off. Don’t waste any time. If you do, you’ll be retired from racing by the time you get to ten thousand hours.” “Sorry if I’m butchering your name.”Copy link to cartoonCopy link to cartoonLink copied So, here was this rare combination of tiger mom and willing cub. “I didn’t have that relationship with Taylor,” Eileen told me. “He wanted to do the U.S. ski team. But he didn’t want to make the other boys feel bad. I didn’t understand that. It was like he had three heads.” Taylor raced at the University of Denver, an élite program, and completed an M.B.A. there. An also-ran, by some lights. Ski-team officials didn’t necessarily agree. “We were told it was not good for me to be there,” Eileen said. “They’d been through it before, and it hadn’t worked out.” For the next two years, the women’s coach was Dyksterhouse, who was a kind of emergency call-up from the Vail ski club. Perhaps his relatively humble credentials, or his non-Austrianness, made him a bit more comfortable with Eileen’s omnipresence. Eileen said, “You have to have a couple of coaches who don’t have huge egos, who aren’t territorial and all alpha-male macho about it.” “They went berserk,” Dyksterhouse told me. “They hated, hated, hated that. They’re very secretive.” Nonetheless, he said, it was his decision to leave, owing to his eagerness to work with other racers on the team. Shiffrin mostly trains alone, both because of her demanding schedule and because none of the other women on the team can keep up or handle the workload. (Lindsey Vonn is a team unto herself as well, under the Red Bull flag.) “That’ll be twenty even—ten for the wine and a ten-dollar tax on the hapless sweater.”Copy link to cartoonCopy link to cartoonLink copied The following day, there was another slalom race (the second of the season’s nine), and she won again, by 2.65 seconds, the amount of time that separated the second-place finisher from the twenty-third. She said that she’d imagined she was being chased downhill by a bear. Two years ago, the Shiffrins tried to send Mikaela out on tour on her own. “I had decided that that would be the year,” Eileen said. This was after Mikaela’s dominating performance at Aspen. Shiffrin travelled to Sweden without her mother. On the morning of a race, Mikaela crashed and injured her knee, and missed the next couple of months of competition. “I’m not superstitious, not saying my not being there is why she got hurt, but maybe it was something subconscious,” Eileen said. “Maybe she didn’t approach the day the way she might have. I might have said, ‘Be careful.’ ” According to Eileen, Mikaela called her and said, “I’m not ready for you to be gone. Clearly, I’m not ready to do this on my own.” Mikaela told me, “I can’t really picture a time when she won’t be on tour with me. Mom has always been my best friend. But, yes, eventually she might get sick of it.” Bug Pech, when she and Shiffrin were sixteen, promised Shiffrin that she’d watch every race of hers, and so for years, while she was at Boston College and Shiffrin was in the Alps, she got up at four in the morning to tune in. Shiffrin often FaceTimes with her from the physio table. Pech told me, “It’s sort of weird. She’s travelling with three or four middle-aged men, her mom, and her physio, who’s older, too. It can get lonely. When she needs to vent or is frustrated, I get the call.” The last time Pech saw Shiffrin was at Killington, last year. “I saw her for, like, three minutes,” Pech said. “My mom and sister started tearing up when we had to say goodbye. My sister joked that Mikaela and I have a Romeo-and-Juliet romance.” This past summer, Mikaela started dating a French giant-slalom skier named Mathieu Faivre. “I don’t know if this is a smart thing to do long distance,” she told Pech. Pech told her, “For you, everything is long distance.” As she explained to me, “She’s got to have something that’s normal, even if it’s not normal.” “Some of this for me is about my being able to let her go,” Eileen told me. “My presence is its own burden.” She went on, “I have my own interests. I like to work out. I like to run. I want to take a nursing refresher course. When Mikaela was at Burke, I was finally getting my career going again, but once she started travelling, what with Jeff the main breadwinner, it was ‘You’re the one to go.’ I don’t regret it. I love spending time with Mikaela. It’s been a privilege for me to do this. But my entire life has been this.” This will be Mikaela’s seventh year on the tour, and her second trip to the Olympics, where, at least in the American marketplace, reputations and fortunes can be made. She is not oblivious. Talking to people around the ski-team scene, one can find it hard to suss out which of the Shiffrins—if either—might be the one chafing under the current arrangement, or to predict how long it might last. People are watching, with interest. An earlier version of this article misstated the year that Joss Christensen won the Olympic gold medal in slopestyle skiing. I was just telling somebody else, I'd never heard of a liquid BBL.  MP: And the lady who was supposed to look like Kelly Rowland!  BET: Oh, that took me out when they showed the photos of what happened. I was just like, where the heck did that pink hair come from? When have we ever seen Kelly Rowland with pink hair and heavy makeup? I know you and the jurors probably have a lot of really fun moments, right? I’m assuming you're filming much longer than what we're seeing on TV.  MP: Oh, yes, we are. Some of that stuff can’t make it to TV. Not BET or BET Plus, sometimes, we have to break and catch our breath because we’re laughing so hard. And sometimes, we have to stop because people get really emotional. Sometimes, it’s family members going after family members, and I have to come away from behind that jury booth and hug people. So, it gets serious, it gets crazy, and it gets really funny too.  BET: Sometimes you get really touched, like in a recent episode, you gave somebody $500 for their settlement. Do you ever get follow-ups from people after they were on the show?  MP: No, well, I tell you this: A lot of people do contact me on social media. I see a lot of them on social media, and they’ll write me saying, “Thank you,” and stuff like that, and then, sometimes, they'll come to my shows, so it's just different.  BET: That's cool. Now we know this guy's the sky's the limit for you. Is there another profession you would want to try on camera?  MP: I'm a big DIY person. I just built my home with no contractor, but that's something I really like, and that's what I do when I'm not as busy with TV shows and stand-up comedy. So, I think that's the other thing I want to try my hand with, with a camera in my face.  BET: Oh, that would be funny, too. But back to “Ms. Pat Settles It,” what have been some of your favorite cases this season thus far?  MP: I was just telling someone that one of my favorite cases is the one with the two ladies who were in the federal penitentiary. That was fun. That might have been one of my favorite cases this year.  BET: She did cut up, but you returned it to her.  MP: Yeah, she was a firecracker. Her friend said, no, she's a rocket launcher. And you talking about things we had to cut out. I had to say, “Hey sit yo ass down, what is on with you!” Because, baby, she came in there on 22, not 10, 22.  BET: Finally, what else are you working on that you can discuss?  MP: I'm doing my second “Hot and Flashy” tour. It’s a stand-up comedy tour. It kicks off in Denver on Sept 13, and goes through the fall. So, I'm looking forward to that. He's overly confident and spends most of the movie getting smacked in the face with reality: His girlfriend breaks up with him getting Laney's attention is harder than expected but not before the (in)famous makeover scene when she removes her glasses it's not that easy to go glam in real life but people love makeover scenes for deeply psychological reasons Just think of the iconic makeovers in movies like Clueless, Princess Diaries, Devil Wears Prada, Pretty Woman, and Cinderella. Audiences love feeling the hope and opportunity that comes with putting forth one's "best self." It's a visual change, but it's only effective if inner beauty is developing as well. Laney's inner growth happens when she lets go of the pain from her mom's death. It's not an easy path, especially with Zack's villainous ex-girlfriend trying to crush her self-esteem, but as Zack says, "Sometimes when you open up to people, you let the bad in with the good." Laney learns to accept the risk that comes with new friendships and new romance. Zack gets his own personality makeover as Laney frees him from the stereotypes he thought defined him. By the movie's end, he doesn't care what other people think; he's comfortable not always being perfect. "I thought I had all the answers, but now I'm kinda liking that I don't," he tells Laney. Only one scene made my eyes roll. You guessed it: the prom scene. To be fair, pretty much every prom scene in movies or TV is totally gag-worthy, and this one features a choreographed dance. But here's the redeeming factor: The DJ is Usher. Yeah, as in Usher Raymond. Laney does not win the prom queen title, which is a good thing. After all, it would have been hard to believe she could go from nerd to knockout overnight. But the triumph is in her transformation — she's happy at the end of the movie with no trace of the scary, inaccessible girl from before. Really, everyone needs to believe that they can make a life-changing transformation. And that, my friends, is exactly what She's All That gives us. The stereotypical jerk can turn into a Prinze, and the frightened outsider can stand strong in a prom queen crown. As if electro-pop singer Halsey’s pretty-in-pink Playboy cover wasn’t a pleasant enough surprise for her fans the commentary on her racial identity and background turned out to be another jaw-dropper “I look like a white girl, but I don’t feel like one,” she explained. “I’m a black woman. So it’s been weird navigating that. When I was growing up I didn’t know if I was supposed to love TLC or Britney.” Though she explained her issues with White America’s self-removal from racial issues, also known as the “it doesn’t affect me” complex, her self-proclamation as a Black woman comes at a rather interesting time in the nation’s racial climate. And considering that she’s never claimed this status before, the internet is especially concerned about the timing.
