Open gallery viewDr Yonatan Adler, director of excavations at a site dating to the Roman period, shows chalkstone mugs and cores uncovered two-months prior, in the village of Reina, near Nazareth, August 10, 2017.Credit: MENAHEM KAHANA/AFPPeople around the ancient world generally used pottery to eat on and to store food. The only ones to adopt stone en masse were the ancient Jews in the late Second Temple Era. Stone is heavy, chalkstone is absorbent and it’s no walk in the park to clean. This adoption of this considerable inconvenience was apparently based on evolving thought about purity, originating with a curious omission in the Bible’s Book of Leviticus, explains Yonatan Adler of Ariel University, director of the excavations for the IAA. In short, impurity was a metaphysical thing, not a physical one. So the absorbent properties of chalk versus glazed pottery were irrelevant to purity. And thus Jews began to make their tableware and storage vessels out of stone in the second half of the first century B.C.E., the time of King Herod, explains Adler, adding, “We have found stone vessels throughout the country, specifically in Jewish sites.” Given that other peoples around the world did not ascribe the imperviousness of chalkstone to impurity, workshops for stone tableware are believed to be unique to Israel. Open gallery viewArchaeologist Yardenna Alexandre inspects chalkstone cores and mugs uncovered at an excavation site dating to the Roman period in Reineh, on August 10, 2017.Credit: MENAHEM KAHANA/AFPThe cave with the chalk workshop was found during works ahead of building a city sports center in Reineh. It is the fourth such workshop found here, the first two being near Jerusalem (one at Hizma and one at Jebal Mukabber) and the third just a kilometer from the Reineh site. The archaeologists were surprised to find the two stone workshops, within a kilometer of one another, in the Galilee precisely because of the long-running question about the practice of Judaism in Judea versus in the Galilee, where it became influenced by Jesus, Adler says. “Some scholars would claim Galilee Jews were different from Judean Jews with respect to Judaism, that the Judeans were more religiously observant particularly in respect to the purity laws. Some scholars would claim the Galilee Jews were more lax,” Adler says. Others figure they were about the same. “The fact that we have such large-scale production of stone vessels in Galilee for the local market really shows the strength of purity observance in Galilee at the time,” he concludes. No, Adler says in answer to a question: It does not seem that the Galilee Jews were a bunch of skeptics who exported their stone handiwork: Stone vessels of the type they made have not been found elsewhere. Thus, we speculated about the relationships between location of residue and oxidation state. In Figure 1, the position of the cysteines with respect to the water/phospholipidic phases is shown. Figure 2 the oxidative modifications borne by the residues with respect to their location in structural elements of the pore We thus noticed that cysteines whose lateral residue is embedded in the hydrophobic moiety of the membrane are trioxidized to –SO3H since the charged modified sulfur residues protrude into the most hydrophobic part of the membrane bilayer unless it has a function as a spot for a structure intended to dock the OMM These residues are present only in VDAC1 and VDAC2 and these ROS are candidate to oxidize VDAC cysteines is that types of cysteine residues may have specific roles in the operation of VDAC isoforms the pattern of cysteine oxidation could also be the key to understanding the evolution of the three VDAC isoforms: VDAC1 has only two one of them in sulfonic state and exposed to the hydrophobic layer of the OMM; VDAC2 has 9–11 cysteines in the three categories we described above; thus it has also the overoxidized one; VDAC3 has again six to seven cysteines but lacks the category of overoxidized one whereas no evidence about the VDAC3 cysteine status or its presence within MDVs has been reported and VDAC3 among the S-nitrosylated targets in the prostate epithelial cell line The role of VDAC cysteine disulfide bridges or of its oxidation to sulfonic acid has yet to be discovered It is suggested that the degree of VDAC oxidation on the mitochondrial surface could function as a signal of ROS load within the mitochondrial network even if much more needs to be done to truly understand their biological meaning SR conceived the review Of note beyond the vitola is that the band is slightly different from regular production cigars. Jemma Freeman, executive director of Hunters & Frankau, found the design while searching the brand’s archives, and while its history wasn’t immediately discernible, it does look a bit different, notably missing Cuba after Havana. Pricing is set at £30.20 per cigar or £289 per box of 10, which works out to about $39.43 per cigar based on current exchange rates though it was closer to $37.50 when the cigar arrived in stores. 2016Courtesy of Eniac Martinez/USA Network.Save this storySaveSave this storySaveUSA’s new narco-drama Queen of the South has perhaps one of the most bonkers backstories in TV history which takes its inspiration from real-life players in the drug game The novel’s first adaptation was a telenovela by the same name starring Kate del Castillo—and if the actress’s name sounds familiar it’s because you probably heard about her earlier this year: she was the one who introduced Sean Penn to the infamous drug lord El Chapo Vanity Fair had to speak with Queen of the South executive producer David Friendly to find out where USA’s new show fits in Queen of the South follows a charismatic protagonist named Teresa (Alice Braga) whose desirability belies her true asset—a cunning Cribs-worthy mansion and discusses her drug kingpin—er she’s assassinated by a single gunshot through her window Her death sends us plunging back into the past to find out how she got here Friendly said when he came across La Reina del Sur three years ago he knew he wanted to make a show out of it which ran its own 63-episode adaptation in 2011 and was told that the English-language rights had to be acquired from the novel’s author getting the author’s go-ahead was no cakewalk I spoke to his agent in Spain every day begging him to let me make an offer for the English rights to the book,” Friendly said “I thought it was a terrific story.” Eventually his relentless perseverance won out: “They got tired of my phone calls whose real name is Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera runs the Sinaloa cartel in Mexico—where Queen of the South’s protagonist is from El Chapo has escaped prison in Mexico twice; he was still a wanted convict in hiding when Penn interviewed him How on earth did Penn manage to get in touch with El Chapo? Reina del Sur star Kate del Castillo introduced them Turns out that she and El Chapo had been in contact ever since he reached out to her asking del Castillo to help him make a biopic about his life del Castillo’s involvement introduced both the actress and her telenovela to many people who had never heard of either before As all of the intrigue surrounding his upcoming series’s real-life and fictional influences unfolded “I was certainly aware of what was going on he considered himself nothing more than an “interested observer.” “It really had nothing to do with our show and what we were doing,” Friendly said his focus remained on one thing: making his adaptation as good as it could possibly be especially for its underserved Hispanic audience “There is a balance going on here,” Friendly said and making it resonate with both Hispanic and non-Hispanic viewers required some precise considerations—and a couple tweaks to the original story line Teresa makes her home in Spain; in USA’s series viewers—one that also introduces the potential for some fascinating angles on ever-contentious border issues should the show decide to go in that direction Friendly also wanted to ensure that Spanish made its way into the show—in the right way so obviously the main language is English,” he explained “But there is a fair amount of Spanish in the show with subtitles.” the show’s Brazilian leading lady Alice Braga was more than happy to put in the work that would make her character That may be why the book’s author loved this adaptation Braga is magnetic and confident—a believably compelling honcho in the narcosphere That enthusiasm and energy is present both on- and offscreen; the actress was in constant communication with the directors and show-runners to make sure everything about her character “She literally carries around a tattered copy of the book with her every shoot day,” Friendly said Teresa Mendoza is set to return to the small screen in Season 2 of the narco series “La Reina Del Sur.” Kate del Castillo herself announced the release date and teased on a more explosive season as Teresa gets personal in her fight for survival Hailed as one of the most successful and popular television series from Telemundo “La Reina Del Sur” continues to depict the life of Teresa Mendoza as a woman drug trafficker in the underground world of drugs the series recasts Kate del Castillo as Teresa What awaits Teresa in “La Reina Del Sur” Season 2 Teresa moves out of the United States and out of the US Federal Witness Protection Program which she was in for bringing down Mexican president Epifanio Vargas Teresa chose to live in Italy quietly in an alias Maria Dantes and out of the radar with daughter Sofia After eight years, the narco world found Teresa and kidnaps Sofia.
