Barcelona’s investment in Kika Nazareth from Portugal caught a few eyes last summer
Despite being a player of great promise and talent
it was slightly unlike Barcelona to sign a player of such a young age
instead of someone who has already proven themselves
Whilst Esmee Brugts was younger than Kika when she joined the Spanish giants
a stark contrast to Barcelona spending between $400,000 and $650,000 on the Portuguese international
Kika was an excellent acquisition for the side both right now and in the future
Part of Barcelona’s identity is the responsive nature and understanding of those around you
In the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage home tie with St Pölten
Kika showed this in the build-up to her goal in the first half
After some communication from Aitana Bonmatí
Kika fills the space that should otherwise be filled by Pajor
It allows the Portuguese international to be in the box and ready for the tap-in to make the game 2-0
It is slightly disingenuous to suggest this is a fluke or unnatural for Kika
She has alternatively played as a striker in her career
But the ability to pull in and out of the front line and the respond to the movements of others is a skill embedded into the Barcelona way of playing
The quick-paced and assertive nature of the Barcelona build-up means it is essential for players to be comfortable and active in these types of situations
but Kika’s responsiveness to pull into the front line when it was needed meant the goal was executed and not wasted
In her pressing style, Kika often makes herself available in space in and around the box. In the 6-0 win against Levante Badalona
the Portuguese showed how the smallest of gaps can equate in a goal
As everyone closes down on the box after Brugts sends the ball in from out wide
Pajor and Patri Guarrjo find themselves tightly marked
with Jana Férnandez coming in from the wing but unable to make it
But Kika remains in good space and even drifts away from her marker
and two on her left marking Patri and Pajor
Kika divides the space before heading straight through the opening to convert the ball
This vision to split the space and pull the compact defensive three apart means she has no marker and ample space to create and convert the header
she can comfortably convert her header into the back of the net for 6-0
Kika allows for the header to be completely unsaveable by the goalkeeper
who has come close to Kika to attempt the save
but there is an underline of intelligence in the move
Barcelona signed the Portuguese international for her creativity and vision in the game
Her undeniable flair works well in the system and style of Barcelona
whilst adding a new layer of unpredictability and fire
Her first goal for the club showed exactly why they signed her
In Barcelona’s 4-1 win over Levante UD
Kika’s creativity worked a treat out on the wing to score her first goal for the club
Claudia Pina collects the ball outside of the box
She then chips it into the box for Kika to run onto
into the back of the net for her first Barca goal
It’s the type of finish that sets the tone for Kika’s abilities and finesse in this team
she pulls herself further away from the face of goal
This means her timing must be inch perfect
A second too early or late and she wouldn’t get the power or touch she desired on the ball
She waits for the ball to bounce back up before unleashing the shot across the goal
It’s a goal that set the bar for what she can bring to Barcelona
Kika has more than enough time to show what she can do
creativity and drive are just the beginning of what makes her a hardworking and adaptable player
she will surely grow to be a great outlet for Barcelona in the long term

Nazareth Mayor Ali Salam believes that Israel’s largest Arab city – known for being the childhood home of Jesus – is on the brink of economic and societal collapse
and we cannot continue like this,” the mayor said in a recent interview
With the school year starting on September 1
We also need to cover the monthly salaries of school staff
which range from 10,000 shekels (over $2,600) to 15,000 shekels ($4,000)
Salam blamed the collapse not only on the lack of tourists but also on budget disparities between Arab and Jewish cities
“The central government doesn’t provide us with the same economic support it gives Jewish cities,” Salam claimed
“My budget is 500 million shekels [$135 million]
not the 800 million shekels [$213 million] a Jewish city would receive
We still feel treated as second-class citizens – not just because we are Arabs
but because we do not receive the economic resources we deserve.”
Most businesses in Nazareth have closed because tourism has dried up
everything is closed due to the complete halt in tourism
Only half of the municipal staff is working today
and we need to figure out how to pay their salaries,” the mayor said
The city is also struggling with a wave of mafia crime led predominantly by Muslim mafia gangs who are targeting Christian store owners and extorting exorbitant protection fees amounting to roughly $13,500 each month
Despite efforts by Israel’s Shin Bet security agency and an increase in police patrols
said the situation has become similar to the Wild West
“In Nazareth, the mafia will shoot at the stores, then tell them they need ‘chawa’ [protection money]. It’s like the Wild West,” Roshrash said
The crime wave has led to an exodus of Christians from the city
which was 80% of the Nazareth population when the State of Israel gained independence in 1948
the Christian population has dwindled to just 20%
Many Christians have either moved to Jewish neighborhoods or emigrated to Western countries
Last year, Nazareth was one of the cities hardest hit by criminal violence, according to the Abraham Initiatives
a nonprofit group that works for Jewish-Arab equality in Israel
“When you have less investments and less employment and more young people who have poor education and no alternative offered by the city, it is common to see them join criminal gangs, which give them money to work for them, even for killing,” said Ameer Bisharat, CEO of the National Committee of Heads of Arab Local Authorities.

More than 50 students from five area school districts
spent a day on the Nazareth University campus to learn about various mental health professions including social work
Thursday’s summit was part of a state program called Grow Your Own
The goal is to create a pipeline within school districts to develop and recruit more mental health professionals
"It's just a good opportunity to see themselves as college students
talk to people that are actually in the professions that they're interested in
and get a better idea of what it looks like,” said Erin Cole
assistant professor in the department of social work
Brady Bastian is a high school junior in Lyons
He said the summit did ignite his interest in the mental health field
“There’s a lot of opportunities within the profession,” he said
“It's very reassuring that there's so many jobs available
But the state program is under threat as the Trump administration this week announced it will no longer fund grants helping to prepare and place a reported 14,000 mental health professionals in schools nationwide
mental health director for community schools in the Seneca Falls Central School District
said the loss in funding is devastating to the profession
“The workforce shortage is going to explode,” Lustica said
“Kids might not be able to take these classes and to understand what it's like
the importance of being a mental health professional
and get excited to go to college to do pursue that profession.”
Lustica said the pipeline program has an 87% success rate at recruiting graduates back into the community
Organizers hope to sustain the local program through partnerships with colleges

(ANS – Nazareth) – Although in principle legal rights are the same for all Israeli citizens
almost all cities and villages inhabited by Arabs experience significantly poorer living conditions than their Jewish counterparts
These communities face numerous challenges
including lower levels of formal education and a range of socio-economic problems
The Christian population is mainly concentrated in the northern district and in Haifa
which has a population of almost 30,000 inhabitants
Nazareth Salesians are responding to the unique challenges faced by Arab communities in Israel
exacerbated by the ongoing conflict since 7 October
which has led to increasing levels of fear
anxiety and depression among children and young people
the Salesians have launched two key programmes
The first initiative is a scholarship program designed to assist 105 disadvantaged students
This programme directly addresses the economic hardships faced by many families in war-affected Arab communities
the initiative aims to reduce dropout rates and ensure that students can continue their education despite the hardships of their families
The second initiative focuses on improving psycho-social support within educational contexts during the conflict
This includes the training of 50 school staff and teachers on effective strategies to support students during the war
as well as the involvement of 100 children and adolescents in psycho-social activities such as psychological workshops and expert-led sessions on religious and spiritual guidance
This programme will provide psychological support for 655 school students
tackling the significant repercussions on mental health in prolonged conflict - anxiety
the Salesians aim to meet the urgent financial and psycho-social needs of children and young people affected by a crisis that is increasingly worsening
also due to the new front of combat that is involving the whole of Galilee

many things that were taken for granted have been questioned
to the point of denying the historical existence of Jesus of Nazareth
Recreation of Jesus by IA following the Shroud of Turin
We often blindly believe what influencers on social networks propose to us
The same thing has happened to the Christian faith in the last two centuries: with the Enlightenment and secularization
credit is given to self-styled historians who spread theories without sources or solid foundations
For those who wish to approach the historical figure of Jesus
we will undertake a journey through the sources and methods of research on the Nazarene that follows a series of articles already published by Omnes on the life of Jesus of Nazareth
his cultural and geographical environment and his death
it should be noted that the term derives from the Greek ἱστορία (historia) meaning research
and has the same root ιδ- as the verb ὁράω (orao
to know after experiencing: the same sense we find also in the root of the Latin verb video (v-id-eo and in the term of Greek origin 'idea')
that a requirement of historical research is
in the literal sense of the Latin word: intus lĕgĕre
maintaining the ability to consider the whole of facts and events
The Enlightenment raised doubts about the figure of the Nazarene
but it also prompted the development of historical research through the historical-critical method
aimed at assessing the reliability of the sources
but to any text transmitted in different variants
in order to reconstruct its original form and verify its historical content
actually did and taught for their eternal salvation
The Church's position thus combines the "historical Jesus" and the "Christ of faith" in a single figure
the vast majority of historians - Christian
Muslim or non-believer - do not doubt the historical existence of Jesus of Nazareth
the historical and archaeological evidence in his favor continues to mount
reinforcing the reliability of the Gospels and other New Testament writings
most historians agree on the historical existence of Jesus
with an increasing amount of corroborating historical and archaeological evidence
This is because historical research has developed around his figure in three main phases:
While the First Search was conditioned by rationalist ideology and the Second Search introduced a more balanced approach
the Third Search is characterized by a greater attention to the historical context and interdisciplinarity
we have an increasingly solid picture of the historical existence of Jesus and his relevance in the history of the first century
The exponents of this Third Quest start from the assumption formulated by Albert Schweitzer: one cannot ideologically reject everything in the Gospels and the New Testament that has a miraculous character
discarding it because it does not conform to the canons of enlightened rationalism
as Benedict XVI (exponent of the Third Quest
together with authors and scientists such as the Italians Giuseppe Ricciotti and Vittorio Messori
the Israeli Jew David Flusser and the German Joachim Jeremias) adds in his book Jesus of Nazareth
the limits of the historical-critical method consist substantially in "leaving the word in the past"
today"; in "treating the words in front of us as human words"; finally
in "further subdividing the books of Scripture according to their sources
but the unity of all these writings as Bible does not result as an immediate historical fact"
The Third Search resorts to textual analysis and hermeneutics to get as close as possible to the original form of the sources under consideration (in this case those relating to Jesus) and includes
scholars such as the Israeli Jew David Flusser (1917-2000)
author of fundamental writings on ancient Judaism and convinced
that the Gospels and Pauline writings represent the richest and most reliable source for the study of Second Temple Judaism
that the Gospels and the Pauline writings represent the richest and most reliable source for the study of Second Temple Judaism
given the loss of other contemporary materials due to the destruction caused by the Jewish Wars (between 70 and 132 AD.C.)
In the following articles we will see how this methodology has already been applied by the Church
to historical and archaeological sources about the figure of Christ

from Tafel des Heiligen Landes zu dem Neuen Testament dienlich
At that time: When Jesus heard that John had been arrested
And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea
so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 'The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali
Galilee of the Gentiles - the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light
and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death
on them a light has dawned.' From that time Jesus began to preach
teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people
those afflicted with various diseases and pains
And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis
Our Gospel reading today mentions several locations: Galilee
Matthew is emphasising that Jesus was a real person who lived in a specific place and at a particular moment in history
The passage describes the beginning of Jesus' ministry as he leaves Nazareth and settles in Capernaum
a bustling fishing and trading centre on the shores of the Sea of Galilee
Just as we use road maps when travelling to understand the routes
it can be invaluable to refer to maps when reading Scripture
The more we understand the geography of the Bible
the more insight we gain into its context and message and the more poignant a the stories become
The map of the Holy Land we're examining includes most of the locations mentioned in today's Gospel: the Sea of Galilee in the centre-left
Capernaum at the northern edge of the lake
This particular map was published in 1582 by Heinrich Bünting
It comes from a book that provides an overview of biblical geography
based on the journeys of notable figures from the Old and New Testaments
Reflecting on this map and the many paths Jesus travelled helps us appreciate the sacrifices and efforts he and his Apostles made to spread the Good News
we deepen our understanding of the challenges they faced and the determination with which they fulfilled their mission

2025 between Nazareth and Joliet Catholic academies in La Grange Park
(Tony Gadomski/Tony Gadomski for Shaw Local News Network)
LA GRANGE PARK – Nazareth’s Jaden Fauske is widely considered one of the best baseball players in the country
capable of smashing balls all over the field and over the fence with regularity
In Wednesday’s home game against Joliet Catholic, Fauske picked a good time to show off a few of his other skills to help the Roadrunners capture the second game of the East Suburban Catholic Conference series.
Instead of using his power, Fauske, a left-hander and former Louisville recruit, hit a slow chopper just past home plate along the first base line and used his speed to beat out the throw to lead off the top of the eighth inning.
Three batters later, Fauske flashed his speed and sliding skills, diving headfirst into home plate to score the walk-off winning run on a hard-hit grounder by Drew Hyland for a 2-1 victory over Joliet Catholic at R.J. Sanders Field.
Nazareth senior right-hander Chase Zidlicky was strong on the mound, tossing six innings and allowing five hits. The Hilltoppers’ lone run came via a balk by Zidlicky in the top of the sixth inning that plated the tying run. Sophomore right-hander James Wasson pitched the final two innings to get the win.
The Roadrunners (20-4, 6-4 ESCC) loaded the bases in the eighth, aided by a walk and a perfectly placed bunt single by Aiden Nunez to set up Hyland’s RBI grounder.
“It’s all about getting on base and putting the ball in play and pressing the defense,” Nazareth coach Lee Milano said. “It was kind of ironic that the two runs that were scored first were on balks. I think Chase pitched an unbelievable game. I loved the way James came out of the bullpen and did a great job.
“The kid who doesn’t have any or that many at-bats comes in and he’s been the best bunter in practice and gets a great one down in Aiden Muniz,” Milano said. “That was a huge play. We scored the winning run without getting the ball out of the infield.”
In an unusual game for two ESCC programs, both teams scored their first runs via a balk. The Roadrunners managed just four hits in the game, including just two in the first seven innings.
The Hilltoppers (10-11, 4-2) were aiming to take the game after recording a 10-0 triumph over the Roadrunners on Monday. Lucas Grant picked up the win Monday.
“It was a typical JCA-Nazareth battle, and we go extra innings,” Joliet Catholic coach Jared Voss said. “It’s a typical conference battle. It’s what we expect in our conference. We’re really happy with our pitching. Ian Campbell had a very good start. We have a pretty solid top two guys if everyone keeps doing what they’re doing.
“We had a little bit of everything today, from balks, hit by pitches that nobody knew if they were hit by pitches or not. We had a little bit of everything today. I appreciate our kids and their consistency.”
Zidlicky said he was frustrated about his run-scoring balk, but he recovered to close out the threat and inning with a strikeout to end his outing.
“I felt very good out there and great to shut them down a while,” Zidlicky said. “My fastball and curveball was working. I felt confident with my curveball and could throw it anytime I wanted to. I was glad we got the win.”
Wasson did a solid job in relief, working his way out of small jams in both innings to earn a fun ribbing session by his teammates during a post-game interview.
“I felt really good,” Wasson said. “It was one of those games I was really pumped up to get in there. I was going and felt good. My arm hurt a little bit, but I was just thinking attack and attack. We didn’t have our best game on Monday, but we came back today and reset, and a lot of guys made meaningful contributions.”

Since the beginning of critical studies on the Gospels
hundreds of researchers have tried to read between the legends to determine the historical contours of the founder of Christianity
Do historians still have something to say about Jesus of Nazareth
The flood of books about the life of this Galilean Jew who lived 2,000 years ago continues unabated
as evidenced by the editorial output of the last two years
Entre vérité et légende ("The Jesus of Historians
Between Truth and Legend") by researcher Pierluigi Piovanelli and A Quest for the Historical Christ by biblical scholar Anthony Giambrone
to The Life of Jesus by Vatican expert Andrea Tornielli and the re-edition of Le Fils de Dieu ("The Son of God")
by Dominican exegete and translator Etienne Nodet – to name but a few French-language works
which brings together thousands of biblical scholars from all over the world
Jesus is probably the most famous person on the planet
who see in him the "Christ" (from the Greek khristos
messiah," designating the savior announced by the Hebrew Bible and whose return is foreseen at the end of time)
who consider him a prophet with an eschatological dimension

FC Barcelona and SL Benfica have reached an agreement on the transfer of Kika Nazareth to the former
The 21-year-old Portuguese star is signing for four seasons through to 30 June 2028
is a skilled midfielder who can also play in attack
having scored five goals in the nine games she played in the UEFA Women’s Champions League
where her team reached the quarter finals last season before going out to Olympique Marseilles
Her Benfica side also visited the Estadi Johan Cruyff in that campaign
Much of her talent stems from her ability to read the game
very much in line with the characteristic Barça DNA
making 128 appearances and also helping her side to win four League Cups
two Super Cups and the Second Division title
enduring Scots Nazareth have a recorded catalogue peppered with timeless bluesy rock gems
Perceptions of Nazareth and their music have shifted greatly during the Scottish group’s five-decade lifetime.
and then suddenly we became dinosaurs,” bassist Pete Agnew told Classic Rock
adding with typical modesty: “But if you can live through the dinosaur period
The reasons behind Nazareth’s longevity are numerous
Agnew and original vocalist vocalist Dan McCafferty met aged five on their very first day at primary school
They were later both in dance hall cabaret act The Shadettes
When the band took off with such hits as Broken Down Angel and Bad Bad Boy
which helped them to remain grounded.
And it’s beyond coincidence that Purple bassist Roger Glover produced three of Nazareth’s most important albums – Razamanaz
Loud ‘N’ Proud and Rampant – helping them to make inroads into the albums market.
McCafferty’s vocal rasp was such an influence upon Axl Rose that he begged Dan to sing Love Hurts at his wedding to Erin Everley (McCafferty declined).
Following two relatively unfocused and poor-selling albums (1971’s self-titled debut and the following year’s Exercises)
recorded with Deep Purple’s Roger Glover
Glover honed in upon the band’s dirty
suggesting they revisit the previous album’s Woke Up This Morning
a tune with real swagger that sizzles with sumptuous slide guitar
The arena rock of the title song remains a fixture of their set even now
while Broken Down Angel and Bad Bad Boy became the hits Nazareth needed to attain some career stability
Son Of A Bitch but the censors wouldn’t let them
Instead they settled for Heir (later Hair) Of The Dog
Though the album peaks with its cowbell-infused
GN’R-approved title song (cower as Dan McCafferty sneers: ‘Now you’re messin’ with a son of a bitch’)
the Nils Lofgren-penned Beggars Day and Please Don’t Judas Me are shining highlights
A 2001 reissue adds the cover of Love Hurts – a song popularised by the Everly Brothers – which gave Nazareth a big-selling US single
Proving himself far more than a stereotypical nuts-in-the-vice screamer
one of the band’s most beautiful compositions
save for Shapes Of Things (the Yardbirds) which became the finalé of their live show for many a year afterwards
As you’d expect after nine albums with the same line-up
Nazareth had found what might loosely be termed a ‘formula’ sound
A cover of Crazy’s Horse’s Gone Dead Train was the album’s only hit single but
opting to save its token ballad All The King’s Horses until the end
surpassing itself with an above-par mixture of blues-infused
Revenge Is Sweet and Gimme What’s Mine) and slower-paced though equally insidious tracks like Shot Me Down and Kentucky Fried Blues
No Mean City brought the band two further hit singles – the Velcro-sticky May The Sunshine and a superb ballad titled Star – and although Cleminson’s tenure was disappointingly short (two albums) it transformed them into a musical tour-de-force
McCafferty sounded gruffer than ever on the likes of Just Get Into It and What’s In It For Me
and groove-wise the band are right on the money until the final
With its cover artwork of fans’ faces pressed against the windows of a limousine
that included So You Want To Be A Rock ‘N’ Roll Star
the Close Enough For Rock ‘N’ Roll album was intended as Nazareth’s comment on the supposedly glamorous showbiz fishbowl they inhabited
A little more subdued and world-weary than was usual for them
but the band only really set out to tell the story of a tour
the humour was missed by just about everyone,” rued bassist Pete Agnew
Despite having been slickly produced by Doobie Brothers/ Steely Dan guitarist Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter (a hero of the band)
Malice In Wonderland was a commercial disaster
accompanied by “commitment” issues and a more AOR-inclined direction – a jarring change of style after the previous year’s No Mean City – that prompted Zal Cleminson to quit the band
The departing guitarist at least offered the stirring ballad Heart’s Grown Cold as a sublime parting gift
Big Boy and Fallen Angel display a lighter touch
Nazareth have always been – and remain – a banker as a live act
And despite being recorded during a campaign for 1981’s mediocre The Fool Circle album
Reeling from guitarist Billy Rankin’s departure and the inability to get a UK release for their previous album
Nazareth let themselves down badly with The Catch
Disco-flavoured opener Party Down – complete with cringe-inducing drum machines and synth effects – encapsulated its naffness
electronically enhanced production wasn’t hideous enough
the band’s material (and the covers) rarely showed the inclination to put up any sort of fight
In stark contrast to the album’s air of wishy-washy apathy
only This Month’s Messiah suggested that happier times were ahead for Nazareth

Waseem Dibbini speaks to Christian journalist Paul Calvert
“And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets
he shall be called a Nazarene.” (Matthew 2:23)
The Nazareth Trust is a Christian charity established in Scotland in 1861 and operating in the biblical hometown of Jesus
Chief Financial Officer and the acting CEO
told Christian journalist Paul Calvert all about the work
The trust's original mandate “was to follow the commandments of Jesus Christ to heal the sick
relieve the sufferings and spread the word,” Dibbini explained
“The Nazareth Hospital is the oldest in Israel
established under the Ottoman Empire,” he continued
“Our Academic School of Nursing is the second oldest
only one year after Hadassah School of Nursing in Jerusalem was opened
So we are celebrating the school’s centenary this year.”
including the vastly different political administrations in Israel
the trust has expanded to “generate social impact,” Dibbini told Calvert
citing the many prayers and “God’s faithfulness” over the years
“I can tell you that for a couple of months
the hospital director actually during the British Mandate period was the minister of health for all of [Mandate] Palestine,” Dibbini said proudly
which is a district general hospital; the Nazareth Academy School of Nursing; the Nazareth Village
a biblical tourism site; and the Serve Nazareth initiative
Dibbini noted that the trust employs approximately 800 staff members
making it one of the largest employers in the Nazareth region
“We aim to empower our local community to provide them with equal opportunities
support them in fulfilling their potential
of their variety of backgrounds in the area.”
“What is it like serving in a city where Jesus lived and grew up?” Calvert asked
for me as a Christian and a believer at least
We’re trying our best to become better Nazarenes than those who hosted Jesus and rejected Him 2,000 years ago…"
“We’re trying to get really more people to love Him
as we believe that this is the only and one certainty that we have in life
against all of the uncertainties that we face on a continuous basis.”
“We want Nazareth to become a city that God is proud of,” Dibbini explained
“and that people visiting it enjoy an exceptional experience and would want to maintain and strengthen their connection and relationship with it
We also want the Nazarenes to enjoy quality of life as the city moves toward relationships based on the Christian values of love
But I think that we’re in a better place than Nazareth used to be when Jesus lived in it
but a lot have (sic) been already achieved.”
First, the Nazareth Village will celebrate its Silver Jubilee next year
“The Nazareth Village grants its visitor an outstanding experience,” Dibbini boasted
we take them into a journey in history back 2,000 years
We manifest and explain the parables that Jesus used with replicated First Century houses
[the] olive press and the tools that were used
Then we simplify the understanding of the spiritual meanings of the parables that Jesus used.”
Calvert mentioned the carpentry workshop and having the unique opportunity to crush olives
“It’s really a village… You actually go back 2,000 years and see all of the sheep and the donkeys and the carpentry
The village staff includes Christian Arabs and Messianic Jews
harmony and love on special occasions or seasons like Christmas and Easter,” Dibbini said
He explained that the village holds special seasonal programs for the local community that “attracts thousands of visitors.”
Many of the volunteers serving in the village testify that their lives have been "transformed" by the village experience and that their faith has grown significantly as a result of their participation
his prayer is that the trust can start building a new visitor center in the village
The second project, Serve Nazareth
the program “aims to introduce the trust and the local ministries and communicate to the international Christian community and try to establish partnerships and friendships and strengthen the relationships between the Christian communities worldwide,” Dibbini told Calvert
There are typically thousands of volunteers every year
Volunteers take part in the trust’s activities
the spiritual team and the school of nursing
“But also we engage them with other Christian ministries in the town
again hoping that they will have for the future a special place in their heart for Nazareth and that our relationship with them would be maintained –and maybe partnerships are created or generated.”
Calvert asked about the benefits of international volunteers
"I think it's a mutual benefit," replied Dibbini
It's a benefit for the local community
partnerships and Christian fellowships are generated and initiated
assistance to the local ministries is actually provided.”
The School of Nursing boasts more than 3,000 graduates
a number that has increased year after year for decades
"We started with 12 nurses at the beginning
and today [have] 400 students on campus," Dibbini said
"Our nurses actually fill leading positions in the health care sector all around the country
And I have to give credit here to our dedicated and committed staff
because they wrap the students with love and compassion
and they accompany them not only throughout the study challenges but also when they face personal ones."
"I think this is part of the DNA that the trust is really a unique bond
It's important to note also that most of those students come from a low socio-economic status
and each one of them is really a success story whose life had been transformed with our help and with the Nazareth Academic School of Nursing."
To celebrate the centenary of the school of nursing
they were canceled because of the IDF's current conflict against Hezbollah forces in Lebanon in northern Israel
"But we are still developing and flourishing even after 100 years," he said
this year we have almost doubled our capacity with adding two new floors
fully equipped with smart rooms and simulation centers
and we have renewed most of our equipment in the existing facility."
The trust also introduced a new BA program in partnership with Ono Academic College
and has launched a special program for applicants who don't meet the minimum bar to join the academy
"For those who have suffered from lack of resources or support from their families or environment
we provide a special program that grants them the opportunity to change their lives
Dibbini said they are "really proud" of this program because it fulfills the three main mottos of the trust: granting everyone equal opportunities; closing gaps; and realizing personal potential
"So I think that it's a real blessing to have such impact on our centenary celebrations," he added
The Nazareth Hospital provides the main trauma and acute services for the city
Dibbini explained that they are working on a strategic plan
currently focusing on one for 2025 to 2030
having already completed the plan for 2020 to 2025
"And we're very happy and proud of that," he added
Dibbini outlined the strategic plans to focus on addressing the immediate needs of the local community
"We started with filling the existing gaps in acute and life-saving services
a respiratory intensive care unit and added also fortified facilities
The trust has also opened psychiatric and psychological departments
These advancements have led to a significant expansion of their residency programs
'We increased the number of our residents from 25 to more than 90,' Dibbini said
The trust also has special programs to train doctors from the Palestinian Authority (PA)
Each doctor commits to working in rural areas within the PA upon completing their training
The hospital is accredited by the WHO as a "health promoting hospital" and due to the current war
Dibbini said they are investing "huge efforts to increase their fortified admission capacity," due to the urgent need
"We are trying to obtain funds from the Ministry of Health and from our local and international friends and donors," he said
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and now the ongoing war
He explained that they are "trying to invest in improving our programs and our facilities and establish additional partnerships
so that we can improve the volunteers' experience with us
Calvert asked about Nazareth at Christmas-time
special services for the staff with prayers of thanksgiving and Christmas carols," Dibbini replied
"We usually host a lot of priests from other Christian traditions
And we do usually a gathering that is multi-traditional
We believe that that is a real blessing as we see a lot of division between the different Christian traditions."
"We try to be some kind of a bridge between all of them so that we are unified in Christ
even if we practice our faith in different levels."
And an added technological twist to the 2,000-year-old commemorations for the eternally-loved Nazareth Child: "Usually we change the screensavers of the computers all around the hospital
putting maternity scenes and scenes that are related to Christmas
with quotes from the Bible that give people calmness and the comfort
And the same we do in all of the entrances of the hospital
Dibbini said that the staff annually displays a nativity scene at the entrance to the hospital so patients and employees can see "something that is really very lovely
"So we try to show more the Christian values during these times and to show that if all of us followed the Christian values
So we spread our values without offending any of the other faiths that we have here," he added
Since Dibbini received the nomination as the CEO of the trust
"The parable that accompanies me all the time is the talents one
So it's a great blessing on one side and on the other
It's really a great responsibility that we need to take care of it and invest it wisely to bear fruits."
Calvert asked Dibbini what his prayer was for the trust
"My prayer actually is for the trust and it's for activities is to be safeguarded and guided by God to continue its development process and meet the need of our community
to continue to lead with humility and inspire others."

Bethlehem was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list alongside Moravian sites in Europe in a rare transnational designation.Chris Flachs/Supplied
To avoid being caught without a bed in the small Pennsylvania town of Nazareth at the end of a long road trip
It was devout Moravian immigrants in the 18th century who gave these towns their biblical names
Nazareth and Bethlehem have been immortalized in pop songs and made famous by their best exports: guitars and steel
The towns set in the green hills of eastern Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley
not only offer colonial heritage but also reminders of the industries that blossomed there in the 19th century
The steel mills in Bethlehem stopped production in the 1990s but today the towering furnaces have been turned into a public park
they are still making musical instruments by hand at the Martin Guitar Factory
The writer's husband and son sing together in 2020 with the Martin 000-28 on the right.Kate Taylor/The Globe and Mail
Our mother-and-son road trip was a sentimental journey with the guitar factory as our ultimate destination
his paintings and his most precious belonging
He had bought it about 20 years before and played it often
and increasingly it was my son who played the 000-28 daily on the understanding it would soon be his
he opened the case and was devastated to discover a crack in the guitar’s binding
Had we not been scrupulous enough with the humidifier
No Toronto music shop would do: The cherished Martin had to go home to Nazareth
I became distracted by the history of the area
enjoying Bethlehem’s cobblestone heritage district
A self-guided walking tour features 18th-century stone buildings including a waterworks
tannery and dormitories as well as the log structure that was the first community centre and now houses a historical museum
Bethlehem was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list alongside Moravian sites in Europe in a rare transnational designation
the Moravians belonged to an early Protestant sect founded in what is now Czechia
and arrived in colonial America in the 18th century
there are about one million Moravians in the world
is best remembered for what happened next: Iron production came to Bethlehem in 1857 and evolved into a booming steel industry
Bethlehem Steel could boast it built the Golden Gate Bridge
The steel industry struggled in the 1980s and production halted in Bethlehem in 1995
Seeking a solution for the massive brownfield site left behind
the town launched a project to save the “stacks,” the giant furnaces where the steel was forged
Today, no visitor to the area should miss the SteelStacks
Stairs lead up several storeys to a walkway built along the track that was once used to move materials in rail carts
Like a mini version of New York’s High Line
the Hoover-Mason Trestle allows visitors to see these industrial cathedrals up close
Didactic panels explain how steel is made and recount the history of the immigrants who earned their living doing that hot and dangerous work
Also on the site, the National Museum of Industrial History offers displays about multiple industries including propane
silk and textiles as well as iron and steel
it is not forgotten: On the final panel that speculates Bethlehem management lost its touch in the era of the mini mill
my son spotted a second sentence scratched out with a key
We could just make out something about union demands and the pension plan
Billy Joel lamented those job losses in his 1982 song Allentown
singing “Out in Bethlehem they are killing time/Filling out forms and standing in line …”
the town’s most famous industry has never stopped
Handmade Martin guitars are highly prized musical instruments
mahogany and sycamore since the early 19th-century
settling in Nazareth because it reminded him of home
The location has changed a few times but today’s factory is still making guitars by hand
we joined a tour group to watch the long process
from the selection of appropriate woods to the construction
gluing and polishing of the body and the tricky attachment of the neck
Some aspects have been mechanized – a robotic arm does an initial polish before a human steps in – but detail and care are crucial to a reputation built on the guitars’ remarkable tone
Our tour guide also pointed out the repair department where several dozen guitar cases sat waiting
We were told it would be six or eight weeks to get an estimate on what needed to be done on our guitar
and some months for the repairs to be completed
there didn’t seem to be much choice but to hand it over and wait
The factory is still owned by Martin’s descendants and a small museum follows both company and cultural history: Hank Williams
James Taylor and Kurt Cobain all played Martin Guitars
fans speculated about the implication of Robertson’s song The Weight
the Canadian singer confirmed the lyrics had come to him after he looked in the sound hole of his guitar and saw these words: C.F
We left our inheritance in safe hands and a storied place
Tours of the Martin Guitar factory are offered Monday to Friday and have to be booked in advance at martinguitar.com
The Hoover-Mason Trestle at SteelStacks is a public park but sometimes closed due to special events. See steelstacks.org
The National Museum of Industrial History offers tours of the stacks, sometimes lead by former steelworkers, on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets can be purchased online at nmih.org
There are lots of chain hotels on the outskirts of Bethlehem and in nearby Allentown. In Bethlehem, the more elegant options are Hotel Bethlehem, a 1922 Beaux-Arts building in the heritage district and a member of the Historic Hotels of America, or the smaller Wilbur Mansion

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa’s heartfelt message came as he was at the basilica to preside over a Mass inaugurating the Jubilee Year in the Holy Land
“With the indulgence we get this privilege
this moment from God where we can get full forgiveness of all our sins but it is not something we can get by money
but it is something we can get by a conversion: Without a change of our heart
an indulgence of this year” has no meaning
“On this occasion the intercession by Our Lady the Virgin Mary … starts this year as a new beginning for ourselves and our families.”
Standing in front of the Grotto of the Annunciation
which is below the basilica and what Christian tradition holds is the site of the Angel Gabriel’s greeting to Mary
the patriarch led the rite of the commemoration of the baptism
together with Melkite Catholic Archbishop Youssef Matta of Akka
he sprinkled the concelebrants and the people gathered around the site with the blessed water
preceded by the Gospel book and the adorned cross created in the Byzantine style for the Jubilee Year by Spanish Sister Maria Ruiz Rodriguez
indulgences can be obtained primarily through pilgrimages
where pilgrims must visit at least one of three basilicas: the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem
the Church (Basilica) of the Nativity in Bethlehem or the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth
The decree prepared by Apostolic Penitentiary and issued May 13 by the Holy See also states that pilgrims should devoutly participate in holy Mass or a celebration of the Word of God
the recitation of the Akathist hymn or a penitential celebration that concludes with individual confessions
“It is a great grace and a very special blessing to be here,” said Sister Isabel Arreola Gopar
superior of Missionary Sisters of the Evangelization in the Holy Land from Capernaum
“We did everything we could to be here today
It is a wonderful event that God gives us this grace
not only for me but for all people.”
The region has been embroiled in over a year of war
onslaught by Hamas from the Gaza Strip on southern Israel communities
These attacks led to an Israeli military invasion into Gaza
followed by Hezbollah missile attacks on northern Israel and Israeli reprisal attacks on southern Lebanon
Normally filled with pilgrims and tourists
the streets of Nazareth were quiet and almost eerily empty as the morning rain gave way to tentative sunshine
and most of those attending the ceremony were local Christians
whose uncle works at the Colombian Embassy
said he felt grateful and privileged to be able to participate in the ceremony which strengthened his faith in a place of the foundations of his faith
I feel grateful and happy to be having this different experience,” he told OSV News
“For some young people this may not be their idea for a vacation
but not many young people can have this experience
I come for things I need for my faith.”
called it an honor to be from the city of Nazareth at this moment
he felt the need to pray for peace in the world and for forgiveness
said the inauguration of the Jubilee Year of the Catholic Church was important to them as Christians as a way of connecting with God and made them feel hopeful and proud
he would be praying to God for peace for all people: Jews
“We should stop this conflict,” he said
“I (hope) 2025 will give us peace and health
and we should just live our lives and not get into conflict.”
Though it is difficult to speak of hope in a time and place enveloped by war and violence where there seems to be little hope
it is still the “the driving force and foundation of every initiative,” Cardinal Pizzaballa said in his homily
“It is indeed very difficult to speak of hope
poverty and harshness of life … especially in this last year,” he said
there are not only so many prisoners on all sides who need to see the light of freedom again
If we broaden our view to include all of us
I think we are all prisoners of this war and its aftermath in one way or another
resentment and fear keep us trapped in our relationships and in our trust in each other
no trusting view and therefore no hope in others and in the future
In God as the one who is able to bring life
even where everything seems dead and finished,” he added
“It is not about knowing the creed by heart
but about being aware of God’s presence in our own lives,” he told the local faithful
who filled the sanctuary to standing-room only capacity
“Faith in God leads us to look beyond ourselves
but on the contrary acts in the life of the world and of man,” he continued
“Believing in God means relying not only on our own actions and abilities
It means sharing and entrusting one’s life and passion to God
knowing that this life and passion will become brighter and more complete in this divine friendship.”
and knowing how to wait in a time when everything must be immediate
and we do not resign ourselves to the idea that we should wait instead
patiently but without resignation,” he said
“Hope also requires knowing how to entrust the fruits of one’s labor to others with time and patience,” he added
reminding the faithful that hope can “illuminate” that expectation for peace with action and urging them not to use the current difficulties as an excuse for not taking action and “building something beautiful” and contributing to the construction of “friendship
