the World: Can Trump’s Foreign Film Tariffs Save US Cinema
Donald Trump has announced that the United States will impose a 100% tariff on all films made outside the country
this strong step is necessary to revive what he calls a rapidly declining American film industry
He blames foreign governments for luring away Hollywood productions with attractive financial incentives and claims this shift is a national security concern
tied to foreign “messaging and propaganda.”
Trump made the announcement via his social media platform
stating he has directed the Commerce Department and the US Trade Representative to start the process immediately
But the announcement left more questions than answers
Will these tariffs apply to movies streaming online or just theatrical releases
Will American studios filming abroad be penalised
No concrete implementation plan has been shared so far
This uncertainty is already sending ripples through the entertainment industry. Stocks of media giants like Disney, Netflix, and Warner Bros dipped in early trading. All three have major projects either shot or being produced overseas. Even recent hits like Captain America: Brave New World and Minecraft: The Movie were largely filmed outside the US
Hollywood has increasingly looked beyond American borders due to soaring production costs at home and better deals abroad
and New Zealand have become top picks for US productions
thanks to tax rebates and experienced film crews
Trump’s 100% tariff shakes global film industryGetty Images
Timothy Richards of Vue Cinema asked how one would even define a “foreign” film
The British union Bectu warned that this move could devastate international film jobs
Officials in Australia and New Zealand have already pushed back
vowing to support their homegrown industries
China has responded to earlier US trade measures by cutting the number of American films allowed into its theatres and that is a sign that other countries might retaliate in kind
While Trump says the tariffs will protect American jobs and bring back lost business
With global cooperation being key to modern film production
this plan could isolate Hollywood rather than help it
Could this be a comeback script for American cinema or a costly sequel nobody asked for

DHAKA – Pakistani musician Rahat Fateh Ali Khan enthralled the audience as BPL Music Fest kicked off the Festival of Youth 2025 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Monday.
The versatile singer kept close to a 10,000-strong crowd at the home of Bangladesh Cricket enchanted with his soulful renditions of songs ranging from Qawwali and Sufi to popular Bollywood numbers. His virtuoso performance, which featured among others, Allahu Allahu, Tere Bina, Tere Rashqe Qamar, Afreen Afreen, Tere Mast Mast Do Nain, was complemented by his talented ensemble which included his son, Shazmaan Khan.
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s performance following that of popular Bangladeshi band Miles was also a respite from the annoyance caused by a poor sound system in place during the seven-hour-long show — something that has almost become a norm with the concerts in Dhaka these days.
There were elaborate performances and cameos fom other local artistes such as Avoid Rafa, Hannan, Muza, Sanjoy and Xefer who mixed their hit singles with traditional songs.
The occasion was graced by Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan and BCB president Faruque Ahmed who commemorated the contribution of the martyrs and the ones injured in the July Uprising and highlighted the music fest as part of the broader festival for the young generation.
There will be two more such concerts taking place in Chattogram and Sylhet centring the BPL, which will begin on December 30.
The breaks in performances from the musicians made way for engaging audiovisuals which highlighted Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus’s Three Zero theory and the graffiti of the July Uprising, while the representatives of the seven BPL franchises also mafe their presence felt at the event.
But it was Miles, led by lead vocalist Hamin Ahmed, that serving up the appetite of the audience with timeless classics including Neela, Chand Tara Shurjo, Piyashi Mon, Dhiki Dhiki Agun Jawle, Phiriye Dao before the Pakistani maestro’s virtuoso performance brought an end to proceedings.
Rising music sensation Ammar Baig captivated audiences at two of the UK’s most iconic venues — London’s OVO Arena Wembley and Manchester’s AO Arena — as the opening act for the legendary Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan during the "Legacy of the Khans 2025 Tour."
Performing on April 5 and 6, Baig left crowds spellbound with his soulful renditions, earning praise from Rahat himself, who lauded the young artist’s talent and said it deserved global recognition.
Rahat and his son Shahzaman Khan revealed that they were collaborating with Baig on a single. "Our collaboration will be released soon. Ammar is like my own son. He is very talented and his live performances are captivating,” he added.
Baig, known for his unique ability to blend Eastern and Western musical styles, captivated the audience with his live, unplugged performances.
Armed with just a guitar and a microphone, Ammar delivered heartfelt renditions of popular tracks, including Sia's "Chandelier" and the timeless ghazal "Hungama Hai Kyun Barpa”.
Vijay Bhola, the Rock on Music founder who organised Rahat’s UK tour, appreciated Baig. The producer said: “His raw, emotive vocals and stripped-down arrangements created an intimate atmosphere that resonated deeply with the crowd. It’s a great honour that Rahat Fateh Ali Khan chose him to open his two shows during the UK tour.
Baig is the son of the legendary Pakistani playback singer Waris Baig, who hails from Lahore. His father is celebrated for his exceptional contributions to the music industry, with a career spanning decades.
Known for his soulful voice and mesmerising stage presence, Waris has delivered timeless hits such as "Mujhe Chand Chahiye," "Challa," and "Aa Pyar Dil Mein Basa." His ability to evoke deep emotions through his songs has earned him widespread acclaim.

The comparisons began after Shahzaman performed alongside his father at the iconic Wembley Arena in London
an event that was nothing short of a milestone in Rahat’s illustrious career
fans were quick to notice Shahzaman’s striking resemblance to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
The video clips from the concert quickly went viral

“The show was record-breaking — it is truly Allah’s blessing
I can’t say that my son sings like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan; that’s for the audience to decide
I’m grateful if people see that kind of potential in him
I’m genuinely overwhelmed by the response he has received; it is natural for a father to be happy to see his son’s success
but Shahzaman still has a long journey ahead
He has to work hard and achieve even more.”
Rahat’s words reflect his deep respect for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s unparalleled legacy while also showing pride in his son’s growing recognition in the music world

Rahat looks like any one of a hundred small Israeli towns
Rahat’s distinguishing characteristic is its resident population: 80,000 Bedouin
a Sunni Muslim Arabic ethnicity descended from the desert nomadic clans who once lived in tents and tended sheep
educational opportunity and health care as an outcome of urbanization have come painful episodes such as Oct
when four Rahat Bedouins working in nearby settlements were taken hostage and another 23 were murdered
The town is less than 20 miles from the Gaza Strip
Many residents have been employed at kibbutzim and other Israeli settlements near Gaza
“If the invasion had taken place one day later — not on Shabbat when little work was happening — the number of those killed and taken hostage would have been much larger,” said a man who introduced himself as Saleh
who often receives visiting groups to the town
“We have felt pain from both sides of the Gaza conflict,” he explained to a delegation of teachers and administrators from Hillel Day School in Farmington Hills
Rahat residents volunteer to serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and have been killed and wounded
Bedouin soldiers are often known for their tracking abilities
which are highly prized by military authorities
Rahat residents have relatives living in Gaza and the West Bank
More than a few of those relatives have been killed
wounded and seen their homes demolished in battles with the IDF — creating an emotional dilemma for those who feel loyalty to Israel
While the total population of the various Bedouin clans throughout the Middle East and Africa is difficult to determine
one estimate puts the number at about 25 million
perhaps as many as 300,000 living within the borders of Israel
Bedouin are Arabs and many consider themselves Palestinian
Lifestyles vary from those who have transitioned to a static
Western lifestyle — such as in Rahat — to those living closely to the way that clans — or “hamoolahs” — have existed for centuries: moving from place to place
maintaining customs such as camel racing and subsisting from the land on very little income
Israeli courts have consistently rejected Bedouin claims of ownership over vast swaths of the Negev Desert in the country’s south; as compensation for those judicial decisions
Israel’s government 50 years ago created Rahat and several other Bedouin towns and villages
Bedouins continue to thrive in various communities and as squatters throughout Israel
which has established pathways to property and home ownership also has struggled to frame policies for integrating Bedouins into society while respecting their ethnic identity
“Most of our young people aren’t working,” said Fuad
another Rahat resident who received the visitors from Michigan
speaking in fluent Hebrew that was translated to English by an Israeli tour guide
Bedouins typically were herders of sheep and goats
their movements determined by drought or rainfall
Government programs to encourage education
vocational training and entrepreneurship have been met with mixed success
Unemployment among young Bedouins has led to the growth of gangs and criminal enterprises
have prompted calls from the Bedouin community for police crackdowns and more government assistance to reduce unemployment
a 31-year-old woman was shot dead in the Bedouin town of Tel Sheva
Twelve suspects were remanded to police custody for questioning
including the victim’s brother and husband
The incident follows a pattern of rising crime
Jewish Israelis with whom I spoke tend to instantly associate Bedouins with crime; which isn’t surprising since such incidents are regularly reported by news media
The Bedouin people “treat you (Jewish Israelis) in all of the area hospitals in the south and in the clinics
All they want is to get a plot of land in order to build a house legally,” said Achmed al-Asad
Add the Bedouins to the list of profound ethnic complications faced by a society whose survival and stability often seem on a knife’s edge

Rahat performed in London after two years and lived up to his reputation as the 'King of Qawwali and Sufi music'
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan won huge acclaim at all three sold-out venues
but the biggest highlight of the 'Legacy Of The Khans 2025 Tour' was London owing to the venue capacity
showered praises on Rahat for making the tour a huge success.
The Rock on Music founder commented: “The incredible success of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan at the global level shows that it’s the artist that draws the audience through his music and hard work
Promoters have an important role of course but it’s the artist and his band members who really deserve all the appreciation
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has now captured the hearts of millions worldwide and continues to mesmerise audiences with his melodious voice and Sufi music and that’s the key factor
We are thrilled to be working with such a huge South Asian music icon.”
This was also the first time that Rahat’s son
performed at the venue and won huge praise for his unique singing style
The 20-year-old sang around five solo qawwalis where his father acted as a back-up.
Rahat thanked the audience for honouring him
The nephew of the legendary late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan told this reporter: “The response at three UK shows has been phenomenal
I have always liked to perform in the UK and it’s a wish of every artist to perform in London
It was emotional to see so many people in the audience constantly asking him to sing Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan saheb’s qawwalis and ghazals because he sounds like him and Inshallah he is all set to carry the legacy of our elders forward
I am thankful to Vijay Bhola for the extremely good work he did to make this tour a memorable one
He worked really hard in all aspects.”

on December 7 centring preparations for the rally
