Five children have been diagnosed with tuberculosis in the central city of Rehovot
Israel's Health Ministry reported Thursday evening
An epidemiological investigation revealed that the children were infected by one of the employees in their childcare center
The Health Ministry is continuing its epidemiological investigation
and is in constant contact with the children's parents
After the staffer was confirmed to have contracted tuberculosis
working together with the Tuberculosis Department of the Health Ministry
worked to explain to the parents the necessary actions
The Ministry noted that the chance of the children infecting others with tuberculosis is low
since the infants' coughing is not developed enough to spread the infection
colloquially known as "white death" or "consumption," is a contagious disease usually caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosism bacteria
but can also affect other parts of the body
but about 10% of latent infections progress to active disease which
Symptoms include chronic cough with blood-containing mucus
When organs other than the lungs are affected
when those with active tuberculosis in their lungs sneeze
Those with latent tuberculosis do not spread the disease
Prevention involves screening those at risk
Treatment requires extended use of multiple antibiotics
but there are increasing numbers of antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis cases

The merger process between Scitex and HP Indigo
Sources close to the matter have told "Globes" that Scitex employees are now being integrated into HP Indigo ending the situation until now in which Scitex remained an independent company under HP Indigo's management
Even before the latest stage in the process began
veteran Scitex general manager Dudu Tomer stepped down after 20 years at the company where he worked his way up as an industrial engineer and junior team leader
The company is now considering how to avoid duplication of jobs and is initiating a move that will mainly involve talks with veteran employees on voluntary retirement
there is no wave of layoffs planned for Scitex's 200 employees
The merger process between the two divisions began at the end of 2022
when global HP management decided to subordinate the Scitex printing unit in Netanya
one of the founding companies in Israeli tech industry
to the HP Indigo division in Ness Ziona and Kiryat Gat
"As part of our integration plan announced in November 2022
The integration of HP Indigo and Scitex will allow us to better deliver for our customers and partners
HP remains committed to our local market and local team."

Plans for a bus-rapid-transport (BRT) line between Rehovot
Ness Ziona and Rishon Lezion have been unveiled by the Netivei Ayalon transport infrastructures company
The 21 kilometer service along the busy Road 412
is scheduled to begin operations in 2027 and will be similar to the Metronit BRT service in Haifa
a one kilometer stretch of the main street in Rehovot (Herzl Street) and a 600 meter section of the main street in Ness Ziona (Weizmann Street) will be closed to cars and accessible only to public transport
Other bus routes will be allowed along some parts of these roads
The Rehovot-Ness Ziona-Rishon Lezion BRT electric bus service
originally planned as the Tel Aviv Metropolitan area light rail Blue Line
will have 44 stops and is designed to carry 77,000 passengers per day and 55 million passengers annually
The length of Road 412 will be adapted for the plan
cycle paths and more trees and generally an enhancement of urban spaces
the BRT electric buses will run every five minutes in each direction and will receive preference at traffic lights
which will be adjusted to automatically turn green when the buses approach
Journey time from the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot to Rishon Lezion City Hall will be 26 minutes
while it will take 15.5 minutes to travel from Habanim Street in Ness Ziona to the Vulcani Institute at the northern edge of Rishon Lezion
NIS 2.2 billion will be allocated for the project

two large-scale development plans that will add tens of thousands of residents to Rehovot in the coming years have been advanced
an urban renewal plan for 10,000 housing units in the Kiryat Moshe neighborhood was approved
Now another huge plan has been approved for deposit through the National Committee for Planning Priority Housing Areas
involves a 1,800-dunam (450-acre) parcel of land in east Rehovot
This plan contains 6,900 housing units and 700,000 square meters of commercial and business space
as well as public buildings and 230 dunam (57.5 acres) of open space
The plan is located on privately owned agricultural land east of Begin Road
which is currently the city's eastern boundary
which was designed by the Rosenfeld-Arens architectural firm
was selected in a closed architectural competition conducted in May by the Rehovot municipality
The plan is being promoted in cooperation with Apartment for Rent - The Governmental Company for Housing and Rental
1,000 of the apartments in the plan are reserved for long-term rentals
Following the decision by the National Committee for Planning Priority Housing Areas
Apartment for Rent CEO Yair Tal told "Globes," "The new neighborhood will provide high-standard residences in the heart of a high-demand area with very good access to transportation
The plan is another important element in the company's activity in developing and establishing a long-term rental market in Israel."
Rehovot Mayor Rahamim Malul also responded positively to the decision by the National Committee for Planning Priority Housing Areas
"We welcome the Committee's decision to deposit the plan for east Rehovot
The new neighborhood will offer a high quality of life with a range of public spaces and bustling commercial streets
I have no doubt that the proposed plan will contribute to the city's economic strength by creating a supply of desirable employment
a member of an organization called "The Center for Social Justice," attended the discussion at the National Committee for Planning Priority Housing Areas
"It is known that Rehovot has land resources for construction that could double the city's population
so there is no need for construction in east Rehovot
There are urban renewal plans that have been stalled for years
and plans in open spaces that are far less important to the environment and far more accessible to the city," he remarked
The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) also criticized the decision to go ahead with the plan
"We regret another decision by the National Committee for Planning Priority Housing Areas that damages valuable open space for the sake of creating a suburban neighborhood that will only weaken the existing city
It is time to do away with the Committee's activity in order to prevent further destruction of open spaces," SPNI stated

Dec 11 (EFE).- Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz told his United States counterpart Lloyd Austin in a telephone conversation on Wednesday that there was a possibility of signing an agreement to free the hostages still in Gaza after 14 months
with the hope of releasing all the hostages
including those with US citizenship,” Katz said
according to a readout of the call released by the Israeli ministry of defense
Katz also discussed with Austin the Israeli army’s decision to occupy the demilitarised zone in Syria
telling him that the strikes on Syrian territory were to counter “the danger of future use of strategic weapons against Israel.”
with which Israel agreed on a ceasefire on Nov
Katz stressed his position of “zero tolerance for violations,” even though both nations accuse each other of violating the terms of the agreement
had agreed to work together to stop any attempts to “smuggle weapons from Iran through Syria into Lebanon.”
The talks between the two come amid optimism of a return to the negotiating table to reach a ceasefire in Gaza after a stalemate that has lasted since August
According to EFE sources close to the negotiations
an Israeli delegation met with Egyptian officials in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss the deal
Among the hostages proposed for possible exchange with Palestinian prisoners were women
as well as four hostages with dual Israeli and US citizenship
Inside the enclave remain 96 of the hostages taken in the Hamas attacks of Oct
Hamas and Israel have reached only one ceasefire and hostage release agreement in November 2023
in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails
The National Infrastructure Committee has approved an urban renewal plan in Rehovot that will be the largest such "demolish and rebuild' plan in Israel
1,400 existing homes will be pulled down and replaced by 10,000 housing units
which has been promoted for several years by the Urban Renewal Authority and the Rehovot Municipality
covers 1,500 dunam (375 acres) in southern Rehovot
The Kiryat Moshe neighborhood in Rehovot is well known as a disadvantaged suburb afflicted by violence and crime
consists of three and four-floor apartment buildings on the outskirts of the neighborhood
Over 55% of the neighborhood's residents are immigrants from Ethiopia and their descendants
4,000 of the apartments in the project are in this neighborhood
while 6,000 are on land allotted to the project by the Israel Land Administration
The new apartments will be in buildings with 7-20 floors
2,000 of the apartments will be small ones
The plan also includes 470,000 square meters in commercial and office space
and 350,000 square meters of space for public buildings and institutions
The plan provides for construction of an interchange over Road 410 and Road 411 and a 14-dunam (3.5-acre) public transportation terminal
Rehovot Mayor Rachamim Malul told "Globes" today that the decision was of "national importance," adding
because most of the people in it are immigrants from Ethiopia
We're reconstructing all of the apartments here
Residents of the neighborhood will finally be able to live in large new apartments with elevators
"Globes": There has been criticism before that the public was not consulted about this project
Authorized representatives and authorized community representatives participated in the steering committee
we set up an administration responsible for relations with the residents
There is also a neighborhood steering committee."
"We won't approval any construction before a roof agreement is signed with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Construction and Housing
I'm going to add 10,000 more housing units there - 30,000 residents
We won't allow construction to start without a roof agreement."
The plan was drawn up by the Barre Levie Dayan architectural firm

The community center includes a variety of spaces
attracting visitors of all ages for a variety of activities
The two buildings are designed to operate together and separately
The project is built in a new neighborhood in the city of Rehovot, called New Rehovot, which is an area in development stages. The site is located in the center of the neighborhood which is designated for public buildings; some of which have already been built, such as an elementary school and a sports-center. Tall residential buildings are yet to be built in the area.
© Amit GeronSustainability is of major importance in the project. The facades are treated with shading elements of bamboo profiles, and the courtyard is partly shaded throughout the year, while also being protected from street noise. The building is fully accessible to people with disabilities.
The community center was funded by Keren Hayesod Switzerland, under Chairman Sami Bollag. The library was funded by Mifal Hapeis.
© Amit GeronProduct Description: One of the principal materials is the BPC used for the brise soleil:
The brise soleil are covering the long façades of the hovering volume, creating a continuous appearance, while shading over large windows against the intensive Israeli sun. Indoors, the brise soleil creates a varying pattern of light and shadow over the white walls and dark floors.
For those who cross the piazza, outdoor stairs, bridge and roof terrace, the brise soleil alternately expose the activity inside. The BPC is built as a profile which enables hiding the construction within its width. The material of bamboo polymer composite is designed for outdoors conditions, while bringing a sense of warmth to the environment of light plaster and grey stone.

GE Healthcare recently launched its new GE Healthcare Rehovot engineering and laboratories department
The company's site in Rehovot is already a global center for GE in research
and exports of digital nuclear medicine systems
and development of GE's PET/CT systems - positron imaging of cell activity
which is more advanced and expensive than other imaging technologies - will now also be moved there
Nuclear medicine is an imaging method in which radioactive material is injected into the patient
after which external devices track the presence of the material and its dispersal in the patient's tissue in order to create a 3D imaging that shows the functioning of the tissue
GE Healthcare decided to expand the center after getting a NIS 50 million grant from the Israeli government via the Israel Innovation Authority
with help from the Invest in Israel organization
which amounts to 40% of the project's budget
will be used to expand GE Healthcare's activity in Tirat Hacarmel and Rehovot
Responsible for the expansion of this activity is Noam Zilbershtain
who was promoted in July 2019 from general manager of the GE Healthcare's detectors unit in Rehovot to global manager of the company's detectors group
Zilbershtain is responsible for developing new nuclear medicine
and CT technologies and products in five global sites
Zilbershtain told "Globes" about the detectors department's growth
which developed nuclear medicine detectors
we developed a brand-new detectors production department and increased the volume of production fourfold
following increased demand for the project
we are now one of GE's most advanced and fastest growing sites
because PET is gradually becoming a standard in cancer detection
including extremely advanced laboratories and new development personnel
We're working on completely new developments that will make earlier detection possible by detecting smaller tumors with greater accuracy," he said
GE Healthcare currently has 100 employees in Rehovot out of 500-600 employees in Israel
manager of the Israeli R&D Fund at the Innovation Authority
says that in addition to its innovation and growth potential
GE Healthcare Israel is "an excellent example of an entire company that in addition to its development center
from marketing and management to production and local subcontractors."

Dr. Yasha Gindikin was wide awake when the war began
His fear that Russia was about to invade Ukraine – which it did at around 5 a.m
a theoretical physicist then working at a research institute near Moscow
I couldn’t stand being part of this monstrous crime – giving it legitimacy by my very presence,” he recalls
He knew that continuing to voice protests against the war would land him in jail for years
his pregnant wife and their two small children
He contacted three physicists in his field at universities across the United States
asking for help in finding a position outside of Russia
all three got back to him with the same advice: Check out the emergency program at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel
The program was initially intended for Ukrainian scientists
It was initiated by Weizmann Institute Vice President Prof
Ziv Reich after hostilities broke out and was implemented by Dr
the vice president’s liaison for research affairs
Scientists fleeing the war were invited to be hosted by Weizmann labs; they were to be granted airfare
financial support and laboratory space for three months
But draft-aged Ukrainian men were banned from leaving the country
thus hardly any scientists from Ukraine had applied
“At the same time, refugees of a different kind were in dire need of a sanctuary,” says Prof. Sergei Yakovenko of Weizmann’s Mathematics Department
He was among the first to alert the Weizmann administration to the issue of the many Russian scientists who were rushing to leave their country after the war began
The Weizmann program was promptly expanded to include all scientists affected by the war in Ukraine, from both sides of the conflict. Soon applications from Russia started coming in. “Typically for Weizmann, there was very little bureaucracy,” says program coordinator Prof. Joel Sussman of the Chemical and Structural Biology Department
who helped to find a host lab for each applicant
Many scientists immediately agreed to serve as hosts
before they even knew that funding would be provided by the institute rather than their own budget.”
Gindikin was one of the first scientists to arrive
we learned that it was the end of Passover
He describes his family’s arrival at Weizmann’s Kipnis Residences
“We opened the door and saw an apartment full of boxes – to our amazement
sheets and all else we needed for a comfortable stay,” he recalls
he walked from the residence to the office of his host
Erez Berg of the Condensed Matter Physics Department
I hadn’t imagined to find an oasis full of blooming trees,” Gindikin says
walking down the hall of the physics building was like traveling through the pages of Science and Nature – so many offices had names of physicists whose papers I’d read and admired.” He was no less impressed by the bustling scientific atmosphere on campus
with conferences and almost daily seminars that continued through the summer
Russia announced the mobilization of its army reservists
triggering a new exodus of people reluctant to take part in the fighting
The Weizmann administration responded by extending the emergency program until the end of March 2023
about 60 scientists took part in the program during the year it was offered
followed by mathematicians and computer scientists
as well as scientists working in the life sciences
Weizmann’s Feinberg Graduate School launched its own emergency initiative
playing host to some 20 students from Ukraine and Russia
who came to the campus for six months or longer
receiving airfare and full funding for their stay
About a third eventually remained at Feinberg as regular students; others went on to study elsewhere
Other Israeli universities also opened their doors. Olga Orlova, editor-in-chief of T-invariant, a Russian-expat news website on science, politics and society, estimates that since the war began
some 800 to 900 researchers working in science
engineering and mathematics moved to Israel from Russia and Ukraine
a substantial number for a country Israel’s size
their number is estimated at nearly a thousand
and now it went beyond that,” says Sussman
referring to the integration of Russian scientists in the country
Probably adding to the atmosphere of openness has been the fact that the scientific community in Israel
took no part in boycotting Russian science
“I believe it’s wrong to put the blame on scientists for decisions they didn’t make,” Sussman says
The Weizmann emergency program served as a runway from which scientists could take off to longer-term positions
Gindikin was accepted as a postdoctoral fellow in the theoretical physics institute at the University of Minnesota
His stay at Weizmann was extended for an additional three months
until he received a US visa in October 2022
leaving Israel with his wife and three children
Gindikin says he’ll always be grateful to all those who so wholeheartedly received him and his family at Weizmann
“We hadn’t expected such a warm welcome,” he says
“One particularly touching memory is of Departmental Secretary Inna Dombrovsky
who made sure we had all we needed for the new baby and brought our family food for an entire week after my wife came home from Beilinson.”
While some of the other participants also moved on to positions abroad
particularly those eligible for aliyah under the Law of Return
looked for jobs in Israeli industry or academia
The Weizmann program provided them with crucial support while they waited for their Israeli citizenship applications to be approved
About a dozen participants stayed on at Weizmann in various capacities
“The institute launched the emergency program for purely humanitarian reasons
but it’s been a win-win move because we’ve gained some outstanding scientists who otherwise might not have come here,” Sussman says
One of these is prominent mathematician Prof. Victor Vasilyev
president of the Moscow Mathematical Society and a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences
one of the most enigmatic areas of topology – a branch of mathematics with a recently found relevance to quantum field theory,” Yakovenko says
“He discovered a virtually endless number of knot characteristics now named after him – Vasilyev invariants.” Vasilyev is now a visiting professor in the Mathematics Department
Among the scientists who received positions at Weizmann is Tatiana Smirnova
a cell biologist who had specialized in microscopy
She quit her job at a gene biology institute in Moscow when the war started
devoting herself to helping Ukrainian refugees in Russia
She hosted refugees in transit in her Moscow apartment and served as a “car volunteer” – driving across Russia to transport refugees who couldn’t travel by train because they lacked foreign passports
she drove a Ukrainian family who couldn’t use public transport because they had four dogs
fleeing Russia with her two daughters and her draft-aged husband
She came to Weizmann through the emergency program
arriving in Rehovot with her family in December 2022
head of advanced optical microscopy in the Life Sciences Core Facilities Department
was so impressed with her knowledge and skills that he offered her a job in his unit
Says Smirnova: “We wouldn’t have been able to come here if it weren’t for the Weizmann emergency program – it’s been a lighthouse in a stormy sea.”
Numerous Weizmann scientists and employees made important contributions to the running of the program
among them Dana Dvash and Taly Loebinger of the International Office and Housing Branch
Sphera Kitchen and Bar is a brand new gourmet meat restaurant in Rehovot
The restaurant is staffed by Chef Beni Madar
a Cordon Bleu graduate who trained at the world-famous “Noma” restaurant in Copenhagen
7 million shekels were spent on concept and design to ensure the dining experience enhances all of your senses
Sphera is already considered one of the country’s top kosher restaurants
The menu at Sphera breaks down into three categories: farm
The restaurant also offers a full bar with an extensive selection of cocktails and top Israeli wines
behind the Weizmann Institute of Science and near the Science Park and Rehovot Train Station

Another public meeting took place on Tuesday to discuss a development plan for eastern Rehovot
The city's engineering department is excited about it
and 700,000 square meters in business and commercial space
who also heads the city's engineering department
Rehovot envisions the construction of a new science campus
to rival the Weizmann Institute of Science
The plan is reminiscent of Apple's headquarters in Cupertino
and residents are even angry about the plan
and are devising a strategy for thwarting the plan
The new complex is located on privately owned agricultural land east of Begin Road
which currently constitutes the city's eastern boundary
was selected in a closed architectural competition in May conducted by the Rehovot municipality
in the framework of the National Committee for Planning Priority Housing Areas (Priority Housing Area 3003)
Approval of the plan is expected within a year
with construction slated to begin in five years
Rehovot municipal engineer architect Dalit Harel explains that up until recently
the agricultural land on which the new neighborhood will be located
was not included in the Rehovot municipal development area
we requested an expansion of our territory in order to accommodate new construction
All of the land reserves in the city have been used up
We decided that we would build on these 1,000 dunam
This is privately owned agricultural land to which no noise restrictions from the nearby Tel Nof base apply."
Harel emphasizes that one of the plan's advantages is that planning is being furthered in the National Committee for Planning Priority Housing Areas framework
Most planning is with the District Planning and Building Commission
Planning through the National Committee takes two-to-three years
peak speed for approving a plan on such a scale in Israel
Quite a few plans that go through the District Commission take 10 years or even more
you forget where you began and where you finish
"Globes": What is the word "campus" doing in the context of a neighborhood in eastern Rehovot
a campus is something that includes quite a few uses
Some people call it 'multi-use,' a concept deeply implanted in the new urbanism
The city can allow commerce on the ground floor
You can be living on the top floor of a tower
go down and put your kids in the kindergarten
The campus is an idea that puts most uses together
emphasizes that the planned campus will be different from the closed-in Weizmann Institute
He compares it to the New York University campus
and you don't have to present a student card
Rosenfeld explains that when you plan a city on agricultural land
you have to grow out without causing too much environmental damage
in a way that the plan will be a continuation
or a single continuity with the existing city."
The Rehovot agricultural colony was based on a network of orthogonal streets - one main street
and streets perpendicular or parallel to it
Rosenfeld explains that this is the main anchor for the plan he proposed: "Every street that existed historically continues into our plan
Since people drive 70 kilometers and hour here
We're piling construction on this street and putting in enough intersections to make it a lively urban road."
When I try to understand where the round form of the colossal building they call a "campus" comes from
Rosenfeld directs my attention to an aerial photograph showing the adjacent agricultural land by means of giant radial water sprinklers
is for it to include in it all the technology functions
I'm not embarrassed to say that this could compete with the Weizmann Institute
The urban campus has to compete with not just Rehovot or Tel Aviv
It's something that should compete globally
Harel adds that the round building can become a new urban icon
"Just like Bilbao started with one building by Frank Gehry that created a buzz for the city
this building can create a buzz for Rehovot's urbanism
It can recharacterize the city," she exclaims
Why is it necessary to build a new section outside the city when the existing city could have been made denser
you have more business districts that did not realize all of their potential
Harel: "We already proved that we have used up all of the available space within the city boundaries
The spaces are not available for construction
The speed at which a city is renewed within itself is very slow
we have a great urban renewal plan on Herzl Street called the Binyamin Yaakov site with 11 buildings from the very beginning of Rehovot as an agricultural colony
We contacted the District Planning and Building Commission
and renewed it a second time in order to avoid losing it
There are so many owners there that we can't manage to get the plan off the ground
We also see urban renewal plans taking a great many years to be approved
It takes a very long time for the landowners to be assembled as developers."
Harel: "The Paz Economy and Engineering company analyzed for us the relation between the number of residents per square meter of residences
We have reached a situation in which we're lower on the scale than Yavne and Rishon Lezion
The tests say that just like a plan should take care of the residences within it
and also public areas like kindergartens and schools
It should also reserve a portion for business so that the city can function and not go bankrupt
Every residential plan also has to provide business; otherwise
